Editor's Column NAME County We reeled in a Northwoods story It’s a toss-up which bird is the favorite around here. Some will say loons. Nothing says “Up North” than lying in your cabin bed and listening to their calls echoing through the night. It’s as if Van Gogh himself blended their haunting cries and feathered beauty onto a canvas. Others will defend the bald eagle as the supremo bird around these parts. Their numbers are growing, with Oneida and Vilas counties having the largest number of nesting pairs. A certain number stick around even in the coldest months, looking to open rivers, car-killed deer and even fishermen to sustain themselves when Old Man Winter turns down the thermostat. Which brings us to a recent Sunday when my son Scott, his son and his 10-year-old friend, and I traveled to a small lake known for its northern pike action. Three hours dragged on with just a small northern caught by the grandson’s friend. But at 1:30pm with thoughts of calling it a day, the flags begin tripping on the tip-ups. The grandson’s friend popped a mid 20inch northern out of the hole. It was deeply hooked so Scott and I began to work the treble hook out. Just then another flag popped up about 100 feet away. The two kids raced over and began to haul line in.

Scott and I thought we better go over and lend a hand in case it was a good-size fish. We dropped the hooked northern and made our way to the kids. Nearby a man playing fetch with his dog suddenly yelled, “Eagle, tip-up!”

Dean S. Acheson

Glancing over, there was an eagle flying low with the hooked northern in its talons and the tip-up dragging behind it. The grandson ran hard toward the eagle. Between his yells and the tip-up hitting the ground as line unraveled, the eagle dropped the northern. The razor sharp talons had left deep slash marks in the northern’s belly and near its head. About a half hour later the grandson hauled in a 28-inch northern. We made sure that one stayed close to our fishing hub. When we left two hours later with six northerns, we spotted another two eagles that had landed unnoticed in a large white pine, hoping for a free meal too. P.S. My favorite bird? The snowy owl. Haven’t seen one yet, but I keep looking!

Oconto’s snowmobile trails are so, so sweet!

Oconto County has over 400 miles of snowmobile trails that meander throughout the county and national forests for a true “Up North” experience. Eight snowmobile clubs from across the county maintain these trails throughout the season. These clubs, with modern equipment and years of knowledge, have some of the best-groomed trails in northern Wisconsin. An estimated total of 10,000 volunteer hours go into each year preparing, brushing, and grooming the trails. Riding experiences vary from open farmland in the south to heavily forested land in the north. Depending on snow conditions trails open in December and the season can last through the end of March. There is direct access to surrounding counties and Michigan for weeks of riding! Oconto County is less than a full tank of gas round trip from the Fox Cities/Green Bay area and less than a three-hour drive from the Milwaukee area, which makes it easy to plan a day trip to

explore on sled in Oconto County.

Sweet Memories Candy Shoppe Among the shops in Lakewood you will want to visit, either now or later in the summer, is Sweet Memories Candy Shoppe. It has all the charms of an old-fashioned candy shop. Indeed, Sweet Memories has become part of families’ “Up North” traditions for over 28 years. You can find over 60 flavors of salt water taffy, 50 flavors of Jelly Belly Beans, 36 flavors of homemade fudge, 20 gourmet ice cream choices, caramel corn, cheese corn, two candy cases full of chocolate and so much more. Inside, listen to a tune on an old fashioned player piano, or enjoy a cold Coca Cola dispensed from an original 1959 Coke machine. Devour delicious gourmet ice cream snacks while you swing on the deck. Browse the games and puzzles inside, especially attractive next summer for that rainy day at the cottage.

SHAWANO -- During mid-April to early May, lake sturgeon travel upstream to their spawning grounds giving the public a prime opportunity to see these ancient ones up close. Some of the lake sturgeon are truly huge growing to more than five feet in length. The state catch record is 170 pounds! In Shawano, they can be viewed from Sturgeon Park located on the Wolf River at the west end of Richmond Street adjacent to the Mountain Bay Trail and Shawano dam. Parking is available. Sturgeon spawning is dependent on water temperature and flow. During seasons when water flow is high and water temperatures rise slowly, spawning begins when water temperature reaches 53 degrees Fahrenheit. In contract, during seasons of low water flow and more rapid water temperature rise; spawning does not begin until water temperatures reach 58-59 degrees. Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources biologists tag sturgeon by the Shawano dam. Several hundred will be tagged over two days in a typical spawning run. Visitors can watch the technicians net the huge fish, bring them in, tag them, determine their sex and harvest eggs. Spawning can take place quickly and be over in a short time. Your best is to call the sturgeon hotline number for recorded daily updates: 920-303-5444. Two websites to monitor spawning run updates are the dnr.wi.gov/fish/sturgeon and shawanocountry.com. Thanks to $300 sonar transmitters that look like small black flashlights, the Wisconsin DNR plans to follow the whereabouts of hundreds of Lake Sturgeon. Each time a sturgeon carrying a sonar transmitter passes a receiver, the date and time are recorded by computer chips. The information is downloaded twice a year, giving scientists an incredibly accurate and complete picture of just where fish are hanging out and heading.

DRUMMOND – We’re not sure if this is the symptom of or the antidote for cabin fever, but the Barstool Races and Chili Feed in Drummond on Saturday, Feb. 16 will surely bring a smile to your face.

Racers are seated on the barstool and are pushed across the start line by their partner for the 25-foot drop. Racers must remain seated on the barstool and if their feet touch the track, he or she is disqualified (unless both racers touch the track).

Each winter, on Presidents Day weekend, the Drummond SnoJacks Snowmobile Club, sponsors the barstool ski races on manmade Brian Miller Hill just behind the Black Bear Inn on Hwy. 63.

Races, including the powder-puff ones, get underway at noon with check-in an hour earlier. There will be trophies and cash prizes for winners, including the open class where foolishness and costumes typically reign supreme.

This year will be the 20th annual celebration of winter craziness in the small town of Drummond. The Sno-Jacks’ fundraiser features both locals and out-of-towners competing on modified barstools in head-to-head with some racers in costumes; others focusing at the finish line, determined to finish first. Wipeouts are applauded with gusto, a word that can also applied to the refreshments held in the hands of many of the spectators.

The day includes hot, homemade chili (perfect for an outdoor event!), brats, cold drinks and raffles with a number of great prizes. The profit from the event goes to the Bayfield County Snowmobile Alliance to help groom and maintain the snowmobile trails.

Snowmobile & ATV trails play well together

Burnett County

Although ATVing is making inroads in numbers, snowmobiling is still king during the winter. There are more than 220,000 snowmobiles registered in Wisconsin, and countless others whose owners make the trek each winter to play on the Badger State’s 25,000 miles of groomed snowmobile trails. It’s a fair statement that more than a few of them find their way to Burnett County where they find fun and exciting recreation on more than 300 miles of groomed and signed snowmobile trails. Terrain varies from forests to farmlands. This trail system connects to all surrounding counties, including Pine County, MN. The county and local snowmobile clubs work diligently together to groom the trails to top perfection. Riders are treated to a smooth ride and exquisite winter scenery. Call 800-788-3164 for more information about trail conditions, etc.

NORTHWEST Region

Snowmobile trails are designated with orange blazers; Winter ATV Trails are designated with blue blazers. No off-trail use is allowed. Stay on the designated trails to protect trail agreements with private landowners. It only takes one thoughtless person to have an entire trail system shut down. All snowmobiles, ATVs, and UTVs must be registered or licensed to ride on trails. WI Snowmobile Trail passes are also required. Only ATVs/UTVs meeting the state definition of an ATV/UTV are allowed on these trails. Some township ordinances allow for ATV/UTV use of town roads and others do not allow it. It is the riders’ responsibility to contact the township in which they plan to ride in and get the current rules pertaining to ATVs/UTVs and town roads. Use caution and look for signage regarding timber sale activity. Trail maintenance vehicles may be on the trails at any time. Be careful, be respectful to other trail users, and ride safely.

Explore the snowshoe trail in Schomberg Park The trail begins and ends with a wooden bridge over Layman’s creek, a Class III trout stream. There are numerous old-growth cedars along the way. Forest critters include white-tailed deer. porcupine, rabbits, grouse and woodpeckers.

One of the appealing trail systems that you should explore is in Schomberg Park, located halfway between Mercer and Hurley, on the west side of U.S. Hwy. 51. The 160-county park has a 14-site campground, which, in the winter, has a snowshoe trail.

Why snowshoe?

The snowshoe trail consists of two loops, each one about .85 miles totaling about 1.7 miles. The terrain is easy and the trail is marked to scenic trail standards with blue diamonds and snowshoe trail signs. Even with easy terrain, it will take you at least an hour to do both loops. Vehicle parking for the trail is just a bit south of the campground (the campground itself is closed for winter).

Snowshoes are relatively cheap, and along with optional poles, they offer the family an affordable way to get out and enjoy the beauty of the Northwoods during winter. Some sporting outlets rent ’shoes. Most people catch on snowshoeing quickly. Too, the chances of injury are super low and the sport is an excellent way to enrich your health (snowshoeing burns more than 600 calories an hour – about 45 percent more than walking!)

Discover Adventure... Answer the Call of the forest...

Did you know that nearly 75% of Phelps is national or state forest land? You may think that the trees and forests are just pretty scenery, but we know better in the Northwoods! We see them as even more countless adventures to be discovered!

Bird Watching

Bird watching may be a quiet hobby, but it can be an exciting one, especially in an area with nearly 400 different species! Any season can offer a rewarding and unique birding experience. The best part – this outdoor activity requires no skills or gear. (Although a pair of binoculars and a good bird book help.) From wild turkeys and great horned owls to the more delicate indigo buntings and warblers, your eyes and your ears will be delighted. And you can’t miss the magnificent bald eagles and large ospreys flying above.

Wildlife

Although a slightly less common sight, it’s quite easy to catch a glimpse of any number of wild animals. You can spot them through the trees while driving the country roads or hiking the forests. Watch for whitetail deer, red fox, otter, black bear and more. Just remember – they are wild animals and shouldn’t be approached. Enjoy the chance to see them in their natural habitat from afar.

MINOCQUA – Only a fool would miss the new start time for the annual “Only Fools Run at Midnight” 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, April 6 at Lakeland Union High School, Minocqua. The event also has a new organizer: Blue Raven Productions.

The cost per individual is $25 for pre-registration, $30 for dayof-event registration. A 5K family (up to 5 participants) can pre-register for $70, $80 on race day. Online registration is at blueravenprouctions.com.

Doors open at 7pm for registration and social time. The race starts promptly at 10pm (last year’s start was 11pm). Music, snacks and beverages will be available to all who register for the event.

Come in costume and compete for awards. Special awards will be given to the “Best Dressed Fool” and “Best Dressed Group of Fools.”

The 5K begins at the high school and takes racers along the east shore of Lake Minocqua, to the back roads of the Island, to the Bearskin Trail, and pass Torpy Park in downtown Minocqua. Awards will be presented to the top three male and female overall winners, with first through third medals to winners of the age groups.

The event organizer has partnered with the high school with sponsorships and proceeds split between those high school clubs and sports teams volunteering at the event. For more information, contact race director Karen McCabe at karen@blueravenproductions.com.

Take a swing at a winter adventure

The 16th annual “Best Ball” Ice Golf Tournament is open to the public, 11am to 4pm, with a shotgun start at 1pm. For newbies, it’s a new course and a new twist on your favorite pastime. Never golfed before? No problem. This event is novice-friendly as you play “best ball” on 36-hole course laid out on the ice from the “Aqua Bowl” in front of The Thirsty Whale, under the Hwy. 51 bridge, past Albee’s Yacht Club and a ways down the straightaway of the lake. The tournament is organized with four-person teams with each member having one club and one tennis ball. No team? No problem. They will pair you up with a team needing players, or create a new team. Entry fee is $20 per person and includes a free

luncheon. There will be lots of raffle prizes (raffles are open to spectators also). Trophies will be given to the top three finishers. For more information, and to register in advance, stop at the Yacht Club (715-356-1366) or The Thirsty Whale (715-356-7108). They jointly sponsor the tournament. Proceeds benefit local charities. Don’t forget your sunglasses, your Stormy Kromer or knitted winter hat, thermal underwear and fleece. And your cooler!

Making a splash to ring in the New Year at

WILDWOOD WILDLIFE PARK ZOO & SAFARI

“We will be celebrating the arrival of some ‘flippered’ friends at Wildwood Wildlife Park Zoo & Safari in Minocqua,” said Zoo Director Judy Domaszek. “We are very, very excited for the penguins to come. It’s been well worth the wait. Visitors will see our new family members when the park reopens in the spring.”

There are 17 species of penguins in the world and Wildwood Wildlife Park Zoo and Safari is home to the black-footed penguins. The African penguin is one of the smallest species of penguins.

NORTHWOODS Region

All species of penguins are found in the Southern Hemisphere. Black-footed penguins are found in southwestern coast of Africa between Namibia and Algoa Bay, near Port Elizabeth, South Africa.

42

African penguins have a black strip that starts at the base of its beak and continues over its forehead, between the eyes up to the head and distributed all over its back, flippers, and tail. They also have a number of dot-like markings flecking across their white chests. These flecks help to individualize each penguin, as each penguin’s feather pattern is as individual as humans’ fingerprints. African penguins adapt well in captivity because their warm environments is easy to recreate in zoos, which is the reason they are one of the most conserved penguins in these parks. African penguins are sedentary, and they do not leave the colonies for a long time. They are not aggressive. Like all penguins, communication is essential for recognition of families and couples. They emit a unique sound similar to a donkey braying, which is why they are also known as “Jackass Penguin.” African penguins produce these sounds at different volume according to the situation. They also perform other vocalizations usually accompanied by body movements such as shaking their

flippers or raising their beaks.

One of its most distinctive features is a small pink gland above each eye, which helps them cope with high temperatures in South Africa. The hotter the penguin gets, the more blood is sent to these glands where it is cooled by the surrounding air, and keeps the animal cooler. These hearty little penguins can hold their breath over two minutes and dive over 400 feet deep! A penguins diet is made up of fish and they can eat up to one pound of food or 14% of its body weight per day. “As one of the most endangered types of penguins these little birds need help!” exclaimed Domaszek. Their numbers have declined by 60% in the last 28 years. The African penguins at the Zoo are just the beginning of a large flock that we hope to have over the next couple of years, and start breeding this species. It is important for people to learn about this endearing species at Wildwood Wildlife Park Zoo & Safari.” Wildwood Wildlife Park has partnered with the SANCCOB, a well know NGO in South Africa responsible for most of the rescue and rehabilitation of oiled penguins found along the Cape of Good Hope. SANCCOB has rehabilitated over 90,000 oiled, ill, injured or orphaned penguin chicks since their inception in 1969. “We hope that all this work together will help the penguin population in years to come,” said Domaszek. Our visitors can waddle on over to the penguin pebble beach across from the Dino Dig. These birds will be one of the zoo’s most popular animals. Have a ‘Zooper’ day out at Wildwood Wildlife Park Zoo & Safari where families make special memories that last a lifetime.”

Owner Carl Surges says he came up with his innovative dock concept in 1991 after years of frustration putting in and taking out the dock at his parents’ home. After getting a U.S. patent on the final design, he launched his company in 2003. Designed and engineered for a one-person installation and removal, their piers are made of top quality aluminum and carry 15-year warranties. The red cedar panels are covered for five years. As noted, one person can put in and take out the sections with no special tools, winches, vehicles, skills or worries about getting wet.

Vilas County

Recently chosen as “the world’s greatest pier” by the nationally televised show World’s Greatest, the selection was based on their innovative and user-friendly design, manufacturing excellence and knowledgeable and helpful sales and service team. Their piers can be found throughout the U.S., as well as in Canada, Europe and Mexico. There’s only one Pier of d’Nort showroom and manufacturing facility, and it happens to be located on Hwy 70 in St. Germain. They invite you stop by to see their dock system, experience a “live” demo, and take all the time you need to check it out from top to bottom. The business is easy to find: just look for the giant mascot, “Pierre the Giant,” fishing off one of their piers near the entrance at 6035 Hwy. 70 E, St. Germain. Open year-round, M-F from 9am to 4pm and other times by appointment. For more information call 715490-1294 or visit www.pierofdnort.com.

The piers offer standard welded aluminum frame sections of 4-feet by 8-feet (other sizes available) with dual-braced folding legs on one end and swiveling hooks on the other. There is no bolting or unbolting. Each frame is topped with two 4x4 foot deck panels of optional color and material. The sections are engineered to carry 7,000 pounds each. There are side grooves for easy accessory attachments. Other options, including canoe and kayak lifts, are available.

Welcome

aunting wails of loons echo across still waters. Tall pines whisper and bow gracefully with the breeze. Nearby, children are laughing and the whine of a fishing reel’s drag protesting the pull of a mighty muskie is just within earshot. And some say they can still hear the sound of a far-off train whistle blowing in the distance - - ghostly remembrance of logging days gone by. It seems a bit like heaven, until suddenly, you realize that you have found yourself in Sayner/Star Lake. The two villages, linked by a lovely seven-mile drive along rustic Hwy N and Hwy K, comprise the Town of Plum Lake. Aside from the richness of the area’s natural wilderness, Sayner and Star Lake offer an abundance of fine restaurants, a challenging nine-hole golf course, housekeeping resorts, tennis courts, pristine lakes teeming with muskie, bass and walleye, groomed snowmobile and cross-country ski trails, paved bike trails, marked hiking trails, a fully-dressed library, historical museums, a full-service quilt shop, and unique retail shops complete with haute couture from Paris. Truly, finding yourself in Sayner/Star Lake will guarantee a vacation you’ll want to replicate over and over again.

Annual Events Draw Visitors to Sayner-Star Lake

he 22nd Annual Sayner Spring Stampede, held every first weekend in May, is expected to draw hundreds of rubber stampers to participate in what promises to be the best Stampede in the event’s history.

Scheduled for May 3rd & 4th, this year’s Stampede will provide a fun and energizing atmosphere that will include an expansive Rubber Stamp Convention where artists can exchange cards, register to win cash prizes, and participate in Make & Take projects and Round Robbins. Classes offered will provide instruction, allowing participants to create art reflecting inspiring sentiments with beautiful imagery. “It’s wonderful to see the results when this group of creative people share their ideas and experience with one another,” says Jill Lemke, Stampede Coordinator. A popular feature of the Sayner Stampede is the New/Used Stamp Sale which is now a two-day event so that convention goers have plenty of time to do it all. Dedicated to the Art of Fashion

S

GreenWeavers Gift & Apparel offers women’s apparel from across the globe while providing personal fashion consulting

hopping for women’s apparel can be daunting, but at GreenWeavers, women find their quest for style can be fun, focused, and inspiring.

“Most women have a vision of how they want to look, but finding the right clothing to define one’s own, unique style takes time, energy and patience,” says Wendy Kimbrell, GreenWeavers owner. “Because we’re all so uber-busy, many women simply don’t have time to explore the possibilities of their wardrobes, and refine their individual fashion styles.” “At GreenWeavers, we do the work for them.” ‘The work’ begins with GreenWeavers personnel traveling the globe to find unique fashion not offered in mainstream retail outlets or online. Frequently, GreenWeavers offers international apparel that has never been seen in the U.S. In addition, GreenWeavers is different than the average urban boutique in that it offers significantly more space and inventory.

“Women should look fantastic wherever they go…. when you look good, you feel good.” – Wendy Kimbrell,, GreenWeavers Owner

“Most urban boutiques are forced to pay astronomical rents for teeny spaces,” says Kimbrell. “Because of our location, GreenWeavers can offer a huge volume of designer clothing at lower prices.” Located in the center of town on Sayner’s Main Street, GreenWeavers has been providing fashion advice and apparel for 18 years. Boasting more than 3,000 sq. ft. of retail space, there is plenty of room for patrons to relax and take their time to find just the right ensembles. “Some women literally spend the entire day here,” Kimbrell laughs. “Even the men are happy about that, because we’re right across the street from The Sayner Pub, where husbands often pass the time watching a game, or shooting the breeze with the locals.” Everyday wear abounds at GreenWeavers, which provides pants, shirts, tunics, dresses, skirts and coats for women wishing to spruce up their work and recreational wardrobes. Special occasion apparel for reunions, parties, conventions and cruises is vast and varied. Artsy accessories like shoes, jewelry, scarves, shawls, handbags and hats are always available in abundance. And when it comes to wedding apparel, particularly for mothers of the bride or groom, GreenWeavers is ready to oblige. But looking good doesn’t have to be dictated by a special occasion, Kimbrell says. “Women should look fantastic wherever they go,” she says. “Because when you look good, you feel good.” Jeanne Schmidt, GreenWeavers assistant manager, agrees. “It’s especially rewarding when we achieve a particular style, or look, that a customer has been searching for but never has been quite able to find,” she says. “When that happens, women literally light up, and walk out of the store feeling fabulous, satisfied and empowered. Women should feel like that every day, wherever they go.” Schmidt adds that GreenWeavers sales associates always offer honest advice and never try to sell patrons clothing that does not look terrific on them. “It’s so important to find garments that accent the finer attributes of your body type,” she says. Sizes at GreenWeavers range from Extra Small to Double Extra Large, so women of all shapes and sizes can make the most out of what the boutique has to offer. And they do make the most of them. Chicago resident Loretta Pierson, for instance, travels from Chicago to GreenWeavers twice annually. “I’ve been shopping for my clothes at GreenWeavers for 14 years now, and I simply won’t buy clothes anyplace else,” Pierson says. “Why would I?” 2965 State Highway 155, Sayner, WI 54560, (715) 542-2884

For a more rugged experience, head to Razorback Ridges. Here you will experience a different type of ride on 30 miles worth of mountain bike trails. Don’t have a bike? Not a problem. The Corner Store, located on Highway N in Sayner, has bikes to rent, and a full supply of Vilas County Bike Trail maps on hand. Says Corner Store owner Mary Debilzen, “We are your one-stop-shop for creating the perfect Northwoods Wisconsin experience.” The Corner Store has served residents, campers, and visitors in the surrounding area for more than 70 years. Centrally located within the Northern Highland - American Legion State Forest and the Sayner-Star Lake area, The Corner Store is directly adjacent to over 50 miles of paved bike trails, 16 miles of mountain bike and cross-country ski trails, and is near many lakes and campgrounds. The Corner Store is also right on the way to the Plum Ski-ters waterski show.

The Golfer Plum Lake Golf Course, located on the south shore of Plum Lake, offers a challenging nine-hole course rich with history and the sounds and fragrance of the best of the Northwoods. Founded in 1912, it is the oldest nine-hole golf course in Wisconsin, featuring a turn-of-the-century clubhouse, wrap-around porch, and a beautiful view of the lake.

On the Water Swimming, boating and water sports opportunities abound in Sayner/Star Lake. For instance, Sayner’s Crystal Lake is located next to one of the cleanest, clearest, safest swimming beaches in the Midwest. At just under 90 acres in size and a maximum depth of 67 feet, the water is clear and deep. It’s a favorite for scuba divers as well as recreational swimmers. Crystal Lake beach is perfect for families of all ages. Come and picnic at the lovely picnic area next to the beach, or camp at several well-equipped campsites on the state-owned property. Before you head onto the water, check out the canoes and kayaks available for rent at Up North Traders, located on Main Street in Sayner. Kayaks and paddleboards are also available to rent at The Corner Store on Highway N. Next, you’ll need to choose from the wonderful lakes in the area to paddle on. Just refer to the map in this booklet. If a canoe or kayak is not your cup of tea, head over to The Star Lake Store where you can rent a boat and motor on a trailer. Errington’s Resort also has boats available for rent. At the end of your day, enjoy the Plum Ski-ters water ski show in Sayner on select days at 7:00 pm located at Statehouse Point–a short 2.5 miles down Razorback Road. More than just a Fish Story

nglers who cast their lines across the rich waters of Sayner/ Star Lake’s fishing lakes are likely to return to shore either with fish-filled live wells, or a trophy muskie large enough to mount. And when those anglers tell Sayner/Star Lake fish stories, they’re probably true.

“The combination of Plum Lake, Star Lake and Razorback Lake gives this community the best smallmouth fishing in America,” says Mike Errington, a licensed guide based in Star Lake. “And if you’re looking to catch a muskie, the population in the Irving, Ballard, and White Birch lake chain is just incredible.” Encompassing 7,554 acres of water, Sayner and Star Lake are located in the headwaters of two drainage basins – the Manitowish River basin flowing to the west and the Wisconsin River basin flowing to the south. The two communities, which comprise the Town of Plum Lake, offer 31 boat landings, as well as 50 named and 95 unnamed lakes. Beneath the surface lies smallmouth bass, walleye, crappie, bluegill, perch, northern pike, and of course, muskie. Several smaller streams are managed for trout, while Sayner’s Plum Creek receives the most attention from trout anglers.

Teeming with fish

Partly due to the 18-inch minimum required to keep a smallmouth bass or walleye (a regulation imposed by the Department

10

of Natural Resources to control crayfish populations in the Town of Plum Lake) and partly due to the simple fact that smallmouth bass and walleye thrive in the cold water temperatures of Wisconsin’s Northwoods, the fisheries in the Town of Plum Lake are teeming with fish, and the smallmouths are getting “huge,” Errington says. “This summer, I caught 16 smallmouths over six pounds and two of those were over seven pounds,” he says. Aside from trophy muskies and smallmouths, which often appeal to more experienced anglers, Plum Lake’s fisheries also offer panfish that most children and beginners can catch easily.

Bait and gear aplenty In Sayner, anglers can stock up on bait and gear at Up North Traders, which rents boat motors, canoes, and kayaks. It also sells live bait, fishing tackle, and fishing licenses. Sayner’s The Corner Store also offers bait and fishing supplies, as well as kayak and paddleboard rentals. If you’re in Star Lake, the Star Lake Store is your destination for live bait and fishing licenses. “Sayner/Star Lake is a great place for a family fishing getaway,” says Errington. Now that’s one fish story you can count on.

Winter, Whimsy and Wonder

here’s nothing like a snowfall in the Northwoods ... the snow gently dropping to the ground and resting on the pine trees, and silent, lazy flakes dropping on your tongue.

Head over to Razorback Ridges, which offers scenic trails featuring varied terrains for beginner-to-expert skiers, as well as an outdoor ice skating rink and warming shelter. Visit www.vilaswi.com/outdoor-fun/cross-country-skiing-snowshoeing/ for printable maps of all area trails.

No snowmobile? No problem. There are plenty of places nearby offering snowmobile rentals all winter long. Don’t forget about the spectacular ice fishing in Sayner and Star Lake. Art & History Haven

S

Sayner-Star Lake is rich with fine art, as well as railroad and logging history

pend a day experiencing the rich history of the Sayner/Star Lake area. Begin your day at the Vilas Historical Museum, which was founded in August of 1959 by Mabel Sayner Dewitt (daughter of Orrin Sayner for whom the town was named). The museum contains more than 40,000 items portraying the history of Vilas County and the surrounding area, as well as an extraordinary collection of snowmobiles, including the original machine built by Carl Eliason in 1924. A small gift shop there features books by local authors and old-fashioned toys. Down the road, you’ll find Eliason Lumber and Hardware, the birthplace of the modern snowmobile, and the location of one of the oldest and most unique stores in northern Wisconsin. Check out Eliason’s storefront window display, where you’ll find many antique collectables, including a player piano and snowmobile. Be sure to stop inside to learn more about Sayner’s history.

Art & History Lovers Flock to Star Lake

Anchoring Star Lake as a base for Northwoods artisans is The Old Schoolhouse Art Gallery, open June through October, Thursday – Saturday, 11:00 to 4:00. The Friends of Star Lake -- a group dedicated to preserving and restoring historic Star Lake sites – offers its members’ fine art,

14

photography, and other artifacts for sale at the Gallery, which also serves as a gift store and historical museum. The Gallery itself is steeped in history. In 2005, Bill Hintz, a long-time Star Lake resident and owner of Hintz’s North Star Lodge, restored Star Lake’s original 90-year-old, one room schoolhouse, converting it into to a gallery/gift shop and museum. Meanwhile, Friends of Star Lake replicated the town’s Old Milltown Depot, which is directly adjacent to the Old Schoolhouse Gallery. The group recently relocated the Frederickson House -- the Star Lake home of two beloved sisters for nearly 100 years and an original logger’s home -- to become part of the historic community park. The Fredrickson house will serve as a museum illustrating Star Lake’s history and will be full of artifacts dating from 1895. The Depot serves as a museum dedicated to Star Lake’s historical logging and railroad days. Just down the road is the picturesque Fredrickson Bait Shop, made from an old boxcar, which rests on the shores of Star Lake, just as it has since the area’s logging days. The bait shop has been an integral part of the Star Lake community and has been painted and photographed by many people over the years. End your journey through history at Hintz’s North Star Lodge. The Lodge on Star Lake was built in 1894-95 as a home and retreat for railroad and lumber company officials and guests.

Feasts and Famously Great Times

F

“People who love to eat are always the best people” – Julia Child

“Sports is No. 1 here, and we never miss a game,” says Liebenstein, who from 1983 to 1987 was a Badgers baseball star.

rom jumbo shrimp to heaping ice cream cones to huge, garnish-filled Bloody Marys, Sayner/Star Lake restaurants quench every hunger and thirst.

Good Times The good times roll year-round in

downtown Sayner at the Sayner Pub, a full-service sports bar offering a complete menu of sandwiches, salads, pizzas and burgers. Established in 1945, the Sayner Pub also offers a full-service bar known for its specialty drinks, including fantastic 22-ounce Bloody Marys that don’t skimp on the garnish. And according to Eric Liebenstein, Sayner Pub owner, the Pub’s pizza put Sayner on the map. “People who come back to the Northwoods every year for vacation say The Pub is the first place they go when they arrive, because they want to order the same pizza they ate here when they were kids,” Liebenstein says. “We haven’t changed the recipe.” Liebenstein brings in bands every Wednesday night in the summer, and provides several flat-screen televisions to keep sports fans up to date on their favorite teams. And patrons regularly throng the bar and dining rooms during football season.

16

“We have a great time in here,” he adds. “We provide a place where friends can get together, have a good dinner, and then stay around to play a few games of pool or enjoy the entertainment.” Just around the corner, Vinchi’s Hillside is another place where patrons can watch a good game in the bar before drifting into the dining room. Famous for its thin-crust pizza and ribs, Vinchi’s also offers a complete dinner menu, featuring specials every night. A soup and salad bar comes with all dinner orders. Menu items also include specialty sandwiches, such as the 8-ounce Italian Sausage Patty Sandwich, the Vinchi’s Philly Steak Sandwich and a huge Pepperoni Sandwich. Try the Big Bear Burger if you dare! And, Vinchi’s Friday Night Fish Fry special also offers baked cod. Located at Snowmobile Pit Stop #38, Vinchi’s is opened year-round, closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Gourmet Brews

You don’t have to visit a worldwide chain to get delicious coffee in Sayner/Star Lake.

The Star Lake Store is proud to host Catch-A-Cup, a gourmet coffee service offering espresso, mocha and iced coffee, and other creative drinks. Open all summer from 6am-2pm daily, Catch-A-Cup also offers freshfrom-the-oven donuts, panini sandwiches, box lunches for fishermen and much more. Enjoy free internet and browsing through the Star Lake Store.

Down the road is Mar-Li’s Bar, which was recommended by Travel Wisconsin in 2017 as one of 10 Northwoods hot spots for fish fry dinner. Also recognized by local Channel 12, Mar-Li’s Fish Fry offers German and American potato salad with haddock on Friday, as well as a Fisherman’s Platter -- a mix of deep-fried and baked, lemon-pepper fish. Meanwhile, daily dinner specials also draw the crowds, and the biggest crowd-pleasers are the restaurant’s Broasted Chicken, Bourbon Burger, and Loaded Bomber, a slow-roasted beef sandwich. Drink specials from Mar-Li’s full-service bar, such as a fully-dressed, 24-oz Bloody Mary, are also popular favorites at this newly remodeled historic restaurant. Mark and Lisa Busha, Mar-Li’s owners, are planning to soon add a beer garden to the restaurant’s attractions. Another favorite establishment for foodies is The Corner Store in Sayner, where huge scoops of ice cream, shakes and sundaes delight parents and children alike. The Corner Store also offers other hot snacks, such as pizza. While the kids are testing their skills in The Corner Store’s Arcade Room, parents can relax around picnic tables outside. And, instead of having to run out of town for milk, bread, and other necessities such as firewood or other camping supplies, customers can stay close to home and purchase groceries and camping and fishing supplies at The Corner Store.

Savory Specialties Further down the road in Star Lake, homemade is the name of the game at Stillwaters. Chuck and Karen Altamore, owners of Stillwaters, pride themselves on offering traditional Italian family recipes to patrons who travel from miles around to dine at this unique establishment. “One of our regular couples travels all the way from Antigo every other week just to have our Sicilian Walleye,” says Chuck. ”That old family Sicilian recipe is so well-loved, I guarantee that when you google Sicilian Walleye, our name will pop up. Even people who don’t like fish love it.” Other Stillwaters dinner specialties include a 14 oz. Aged Black Angus Ribeye Steak, Friday All-You-Can-Eat Fish Fry, Baked Cold Water Alaska Cod, Homemade Meatloaf, and Chuck’s Homemade Pasta and Meatballs. Stillwaters, located on Star Lake’s Highway K at Snowmobile Pit Stop #35, is open year-round, offers carry-out orders, and features outdoor dining in the summer.

Stocking Up

If dining and imbibing at home is your pleasure, stock up on supplies from the Mobil Station and The Corner Store in Sayner, and The Star Lake Store in Star Lake. At The Mobil, patrons can fill their tanks and shop for grocery essentials. Open daily all year, The Mobil carries wine and alcohol and a broad selection of craft beers. At The Corner Store, summer patrons also will find an ample selection of grocery staples. Open daily from May through September, the Corner Store offers beer and alcohol, as well as prepared pizza and hand-dipped ice cream. Bike, kayak, and paddleboard rentals are also available, as well as camping and fishing supplies. In Star Lake, the Star Lake Store sells a wide and eclectic range of vacation necessities – its vast inventory includes gifts, groceries, bait, fishing and camping supplies, clothing, boat rentals and deer registration services. Open May thru September.
