Spring cleaning for the soul
F
or those of us living in the far Northwoods – man, wasn’t that a snowy winter! Lots of snowmobiling (lots of snow shoveling walkways), lots of skiing (lots of snowblowing and snowplowing driveways), lots of ice fishing (lots of roof clearing of snow). But here we are in springtime, and nothing beats the Northwoods in the spring for magnificent waterfalls and brilliant bursts of wildflowers. Everywhere you turn, it’s soul-cleansing, inspiring, refreshing scenery that melts your cares away with each new deep breath you take. It’s picture taking time at those waterfalls, fishing for spring walleyes, and camping under the starry, starry skies.
Inside this Issue
Dean S. Acheson
Bald eagles are raising their young, does are cautiously emerging from the forests and woodlands with their newborns, and farmers and gardeners are sowing what they hope will be a decent harvest. Across the Northwoods and into central Wisconsin you’ll find lots of bike and foot races popping up like daffodils. Those on motorized racetracks are turning hot laps as hometown heroes compete for cash and bragging rights. Unique shops are replenishing their stock with new items, as well as favorites. With this issue and those on deck we hope to entice you to visit, play and stay in the Northwoods. We have a lot going for us – clean air, friendly residents, and lots to see and do. Come discover the land they call “Up North.”

Portage County Heritage Park is a reminder of days past gone PLOVER – Step back in time with a visit to the historic village, Heritage Park, located in Plover. The buildings and contents illustrate what life in Portage County was like between 1870 and 1910. The Portage County Historical Society (PCHS) owns and operates the property. Situated on the property, corner of Willow Drive and Wa s h i n g ton Avenue, are several structures: Hie Corner School, post office, the Old Plover Methodist Church, general store, blacksmith shop, Franklin/Calkins House, Engford House, and Yellowstone Cabin. The Society was able to have the Methodist Church entered on the National Register of Historic Places by the Secretary of the Interior on March 27, 1980. The Franklin/Calkins House was built in 1857 at, roughly, the same time as the Old Plover Methodist Church, and a number of the construction

techniques are the same. Also on display is a reminder of the heyday of the railroad era: a GB&W Caboose 617 along with a collection of farm equipment donated by Milo Harpstead. The park follows a twotheme presentation of its structures. The west side of the park is set up to portray community life, and the east end shows both rural and unique structures from the county. The Society has endeavored to create a living monument to life in Portage County during its early settlement years. The Society asks that you mark the calendar for their Heritage Days, scheduled for June 14-15. At the time of this writing, they plan to have craft demonstrations. Times will be posted on the PCHSWI website or Facebook page. The Grey Kats will be performing Saturday afternoon and there is a possibility of a square dance Sunday afternoon at the barn. The event is free to the public. The park is open from Memorial Day through Labor Day each Saturday and Sunday from 1-4pm. Contact the Society for other viewing times: 715600-4950.
TheGateway to ‘Up North’ Lots to enjoy at Standing Rocks County Park PLOVER – Just about eight miles east of Plover is the 524-acre Standing Rocks County Park, where you’ll find plenty of opportunities to relax and have fun in one of the nicest county parks around. There are approximately 10 miles of trails for walking, running and mountain biking; 3 disc golf course loops, including a 12-hole west loop, 12-hole middle loop, and a 9-hole east loop; dog exercise trail, and a field target archery course. In the winter, there are cross-country ski trails and a downhill ski hill to enjoy. There is fishing nearby on Bear Lake. A trail pass is required for all users, available at the trailhead. There is also a fee for the disc golf course. Mountain bike trails are open daily from May 1 to Nov. 16. Trails are closed to bikes Nov. 15 through April. Trails are also closed to bikes anytime excessively wet conditions exist during the bike season.
Approximately 10 miles of cross-country ski trails are open for mountain biking from May 1 to Nov. 15. Point Area Single Track Association some years ago added over 13 miles of single track of various skill levels. There are plenty of climbs, roots and rocks that wind throughout the wooded park. Mountain bikes must stay on designated trails at all times. All single track is signed and one way only. There was a lot of planning and effort that went into creating this adventurous trek and that is obvious as soon as you hit the paths. They offer a tranquility and peaceful journey through some awesome single and double tracks as you carve your way. For more information on activities at Standing Rocks Park, contact the Portage County Parks Department office at 715-346-1433. Directions: From I-29/County B exit in Plover: drive east on County B for 6.5 miles and turn right (south) onto Adams Lake Rd. Go south 1.5 miles and turn right (west) onto Standing Rocks Road. Go west 0.6 mile to the Standing Rocks Park entrance.

Today, try the Tomorrow River State Trail PLOVER – The Tomorrow River State Trail is a 29-mile trail developed along an abandoned railroad grade. It travels from the village of Plover in Portage County through scenic glacial terrain and farm country to just outside the village of Manawa in Waupaca County. The Tomorrow River flows under the trail at a bridge 1.5 miles east of Amherst Junction. The trail is surfaced with crushed limestone, which is packed to a smooth surface. It is open to bicyclists, hikers, joggers, and horseback riders in the spring, summer and fall and to snowmobilers, skiers and dog sledding during the winter. In Portage County the horse trail is a separate 14-mile trail alongside the limestone trail from Plover to Waupaca County. Horses should never be on the limestone trail except in posted areas where the trail is shared. Contact Waupaca County for horse trail information in that county. Dogs must be leashed at all times, and ATVs are not allowed on the trail. Trailheads are located off Twin Towers Drive in Plover, Custer Road, Amherst Junction and Cate Park in Amherst. In Waupaca County a trailhead exists along Hwy. 49 in Scandinavia. All Portage County trailheads accommodate horse trailers. Additional parking and public restrooms are available

Trail passes are available at the trailheads’ self-registration stations or at the Portage County and Waupaca county parks offices. There is a short one-mile gap in the trail in Amherst Junction and trail users will need to use local roads as the trail route. The eastern terminus of the trail in Waupaca County ends at Wolf Road. Users will need to use local roads for about a halfmile between the trail and the village of Manawa. The Green Circle State Trail connects to the Tomorrow River State Trail at Hoover Road, just north of County Hwy. B in Plover.

Florence – Spring Plant Sale: Florence – Rummage/Sidewalk Sale: Florence – Mud Run:
Well, these are two good hiking trails FLORENCE - We know you’re not going to travel 60 miles just for a good drink of water. But if you’re in the area the Chipmunk Rapids Campground’s artesian well along Pine River in Florence County bubbles with possibilities! The artesian well was discovered while drilling for a new well for the Chipmunk Rapids Campground in 1968. Even after nearly 40 years, the flowing artesian well produces about 15 gallons per minute of cold, clear water. A sign explains how the well works.

But here’s the real reason to visit the area. Both the Lauterman National Recreation Trail and the Lost Lake Trail are in the vicin-

ity. So you can hike one or both of the trails and work up a thirst deserving of a stop at the artesian well. Lauterman Trail is a half-mile past the Whisker Lake access road. The entrance to the Lauterman National Recreation Trail is on Forest Road 2154. A trail connects the two areas. The ninemile trail serves as both hiking and a cross-country trail. It features several routes of varying levels of difficulty. Lauterman Lake has five walk-in campsites, including tables, tent pads, fire rings, and wilderness toilets. Lost Lake Trail can be accessed by walking the Lauterman National Recreation Trail or by driving in on Forest Road 2156 out of either Tipler or Long Lake. The Lost Lake Trail circles the lake. Longer hikes can be taken on the 4.5-mile Ridge Trail Loop. There is also a mile long interpretive nature trail, the Assessor’s Trail. Camping is available at either Chipmunk Rapids CG and Lost Lake CG. Directions: From Florence, take State Hwy. 70 west for 15 miles to FR 2450. Turn left (south) 1 mile to FR 2156, then 3 miles southeast 2 miles to Chipmunk Rapids Campground. The well is on your left after you enter the campground. FlorenceCounty Picture-perfect pair of waterfalls to visit FLORENCE – This past season’s abundant snowfall almost guarantees there will be ample rushing water over the beautiful waterfalls in Florence County this spring (and likely into May). All of them are assessable -- some easier than others -- and maps pinpointing their locations can be found at the Wild Rivers Interpretive Center in Florence. By the way, the Interpretive Center should be on your list of stops while visiting the area. Lots of interesting information and displays are inside. But back to the waterfalls. Here are two of the waterfalls you may want to visit, regardless of the season, but especially this month. Both are located near each other in east central Florence County. Breakwater Falls – Three tiers of cascading falls with rapids create this spectacular falls just below the Pine River Flowage Dam. Caution signs hang over the river here.

falls is not recommended for children or people with difficulty walking as climbing up and down rocks offer the best views. LaSalle Falls – Come prepared for a walk of about one mile, one way, on a rustic trail. The falls is accessed from County C by turning north on LaSalle Falls Road. This road is 10.2 miles east of Highway 101 or 1.9 miles west of County U. LaSalle Falls Road leads northwest 2.4 miles to a small parking lot on the north side of the road. From the parking lot a trail leads northward for one mile to the falls. About 0.4 miles into the trail a small creek runs eastward. During periods of high water, crossing it may be difficult. The trail ends at the 35-foot rock outcrop next to the falls, but the best view on foot is to climb down the steep and challenging hill to the base of the falls. Downstream of the falls is a gorge filled with rapids, which runs for 1/2 mile. The best view of the area is in a canoe or kayak from the end of the gorge. If you only visit one waterfall, make this the one!

Explore Marinette County by ATV/UTV Sprawling Marinette County – known for its breathtaking 14 major waterfalls – is also home to a network of wide, well-groomed, award-winning ATV/UTV trails that offers nearly 300 miles of riding pleasure. Marinette County’s forests total 230,000 acres, giving everyone room to roam. Most of the Marinette trail system is open year round, with the exception of early spring when trails close to protect them from erosion. Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and the Bay of Green Bay to the east and the sprawling Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest to the west border the county. The majority of the county’s year-round ATV trails are located in the northern half of the county. Trails run from Lake Hilbert in the far northwestern corner of the county east to the Michigan border and south to the Peshtigo River State Forest. No matter which loop or trail you ride, you won’t be disappointed. The system accesses county forestlands as well as a few of the county’s waterfalls. You’ll ride rolling hills, twisty trails, sandy flats and forest roads. The riding options are nearly endless. You can choose to cover as much ground as possible, or pick a backcountry loop and explore it at a more leisurely pace.

sharp curves, steep hills and over 300 miles of ATV excitement.
The west side trails are a stacked pair of large loops, one to the north and one to the south. The common trail – the one that splits the two loops – is known locally at the “Bunny Run.” These are large loops, so as you play keep an eye on the gas gauge. There are no fuel stops in the southern loop; the northern loop offers gas stations in both Goodman and Dunbar. In this neck of the woods, it’s a good idea to carry extra fuel with you. North of Hwy. 8, a third, smaller loop tracks north into Florence County as it circles the Dunbar State Natural Area back to Dunbar. The final leg of your Marinette County adventure trails east from Dunbar on a series of forest roads through Pembine, all the way to the Menominee River and the Michigan border. ATV/UTV riders on the Iron Snowshoe ATV/UTV trails in the Butler Rock area of Marinette County, which connect into the Oconto County summer only ATV/UTV trail system at the county lines, need to be aware that Oconto County’s ATV/UTV trails close Oct. 31 each year For more information, including lodging and attractions, contact Marinette County Tourism, 715-735-6681 or visit therealnorth.com.
Trailhead locations: Three parking park-n-ride locations serve the north end of the trail system: in the Town of Dunbar via Hwy. 8, north of Pembine via Hwy. 141 and Barlow Lake Road, and in Athelstane on Eagle River Road via County A. There are numerous Park-n-Ride locations in the southern portions of the county as well. Two popular locations are west of Crivitz: County W and Bushman Road and County W and Parkway Road. McClintock County Park, in the Town of Silver Cliff, offers both a park-n-ride location as well as an ATV accessible campground.

PESHTIGO & MARINETTE – Disc golf appeals to all ages and levels of experience. There are more than 230 disc golf courses in Wisconsin! Marinette County is home to two disc golf courses. Offering various difficulty levels and scenic beauty, these courses are a “must play” for the disc golfer! Marinette’s City Park has a beautiful 9-hole disc golf course. Laid out over a 2,790-foot course, it offers 6 wooded and 3 open holes. No. 4 is a 353-foot beautiful tunnel shot and No. 7 is 609 feet from the top of a sledding hill. The course is free to use. Discs are available for use at the Civic Center and can be checked out with a $20 per set deposit. The deposit is returned in full when the three-disc set is returned. Scorecards and course maps are also available at the Civic Center. Peshtigo’s Badger Park’s disc golf course was redesigned in 2016. The 9-hole course is open, flat and short with lots of trees, according to a reviewer on dgcoursereview.com. Peshtigo Flowage is across the road and makes for a nice backdrop. A good number of mature trees make up the difficulty here, said the reviewer. There’s a nearby children’s play area so be careful throwing on the last holes. On the plus side, the younger kids will get a twofor-one outing when you bring them to play disc golf and then let them cut loose on the big playground. Discs are available from the campground office, when staffed. It is recommended you bring your own discs.

OCONTO – The Oconto County Historical Society which was founded in 1940, is based in Oconto, the county seat of Oconto County. It maintains three buildings: the historic Beyer Home Museum, a restored and completely refurnished 1890s home of a prominent family; the George E. Hall Annex, which contains permanent exhibits on Old Main Street-Oconto, “County Waterways,” and temporary exhibits, research files, photos, and artifacts in storage as well as having the new Carriage House addition; and an urban barn. A gazebo was moved onto the property in 1998 and a 1870s log house has been moved to the site and restored. The society also helps administer the Copper Culture State Park, and the Holt & Balcom Logging Camp, and gives tours of the First Church of Christ, Scientist. The Beyer Home was built in 1868 by Cyrus and Kitty Hart. It’s believed to be one of the first brick homes in the county. The building, located 917 Park Avenue, passed through several owners before becoming the home of George and Fanny Beyer in 1881. Though the original structure was an Italianate-style, the Beyers remodeled it into a Queen Anne style home adding a wrap-around porch, three-story tower room and entry, a south bay addition, and new windows, many of which included leaded glass.

The adjacent annex contains Copper Culture artifacts, old Main Street Oconto store exhibits, and early settler and logging items. The urban barn houses carriages and electric cars. The building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. The museum is open daily for public tours June 1 through Labor Day. For additional information contact the Oconto County Historical Society at 920-834-6206 or visit ocontoctyhistsoc.org. Another historic building in Oconto is First Christian Science Church, corner of Main and Chicago streets. Built in 1886 for $1,137, this structure is the first edifice built for Christian Science services in the world. Although the Mother Church in Boston had started a number of years before, no building had been completed for the express purpose of worship until the Oconto church was erected. With the exception of modern lighting and heating installation, the church remains virtually unchanged. Built on cedar pilings with a wood exterior, a basement was added in 1916 when a heating plant was installed. The church maintains a reading room in the basement, containing historical documents relating to the church, and current publications about Christian Science. This structure was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. Tours are available May 1 through Oct. 15. Visitors may arrange a tour by contacting the Oconto Visitor Center, (inside Wagner Shell Food Mart), 517 Smith Avenue, telephone 920-834-5711.

‘Putt Run’ Motorcycle Ride
Located on Wisconsin’s Rustic Road 105 in the heart of the Nicolet-Chequamegon National Forest, it’s one of only a few covered bridges that can be found in Wisconsin. Although it looks “old,” it was built in 1991 (and recognized as the 1992 Outstanding Engineering Project in Wisconsin). The bridge was specially constructed using a Town Lattice truss design and constructed with glue-laminated wood. The bridge style was named after Ithiel Town, who in the 1820s came up with the design.
PHILLIPS – Motorcyclists are invited to take part in the Saturday, June 1 Putt Run Motorcycle Ride with 10am registration at the VFW Post 5778 lounge, 306 S. Lake Ave., Phillips.
Adjacent to the bridge is the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest’s 16-mile Smith Rapids Saddle Trail, the Smith Rapids Campground, the Smith Rapids Picnic Area which includes a picnic table, grill, drinking water, day-use area, river and stream fishing, carry-in boat access, and vault toilets. There is no garbage service.
There will be stops along the way to draw your cards and some 50/50 raffles (half will go to local veterans organization). All makes of motorcycles are welcome. Adults are invited to join the ride, make new friends and enjoy the beautiful Northwood’s route. For more information, call 715-339-6069.
The ride starts at 11:30am sharp. There’s no fundraising this year, according to the organizers, just a good old poker run with lots of riding.

Copper Peak to challenge Red Bull 400 athletes IRONWOOD – Copper Peak, the iconic ski-flying hill in Ironwood, MI, will once again play host to an international competition on Saturday, May 11. The event will be none other than Red Bull 400, the world’s steepest 400-meter race. The second annual Copper Peak event promises to be a huge event, with 1,000 spots that were up for grabs and almost three times this number already on the waiting list. Last year, the inaugural competition brought back speed, endurance and energy to the jump as over 450 local, regional and international competitors entered it. Copper Peak will share the May 11 spotlight with Lahti, Finland, as both venues come after the 2019 Red Bull 400 season opener at Almaty, Kazakhstan on April 28.

The principle of the Red Bull 400 is simple, but so tough: participants start at the bottom of the ski jump and race 400 meters uphill 40 stories to the top of the largest artificial ski jump tower in the world. The nearly vertical race challenges participants’ speed and endurance, and is guaranteed to put the participants’ calves, quads and fitness, to the ultimate test. Spots are available among five different registration options: Individual Men’s and Women’s Solo; Ski Patrol/Fire/EMS/Military / Police discount; Individual Men’s and Women’s Custom Heat Time and Coed Solo. For registration and race information visit redbull.com/rb400.

Paddlers sing praises of the Brule River IRON RIVER -- The 55 mile-long, Brule River is one of the most secluded, navigable rivers in the state, flowing through a remote wilderness setting with few cabins and even fewer roads. The river provides an excellent, relaxing “get-away” experience for canoeists and kayakers. The river usually remains high enough in the spring and early summer to guarantee a good paddle. There’s a rain gauge along U.S. Highway 2 bridge to determine if the water is at least 3.5 feet, the minimum needed for a decent paddle.
woods blend of brushy thickets and dense forest made up of aspen, maple, birch, cedar, spruce, balsam fir and red pine.
Wildlife is abundant, especially in the morning and afternoon hours. Paddlers are likely to see white-tailed deer, beaver, muskrat, raccoon and river otter. Among the birdlife you are likely to see are wood duck, common merganser, belted kingfisher, spotted sandpiper, great blue heron and several species of warbler. The river is also a popular trout stream with brown and brook trout frequently pulled from the many pools scattered throughout the river’s length. The Brule is mainly quiet water with just a few, short sets of rapids, most located just above and below the Pentoga (FR 2446) bridge in Segment B2. Early French explorers named the river “Brule,” which means “burnt” in French. The forest near the confluence with the Menominee had been decimated by fire around the time the explorers first arrived. The Chippewa named the river “We-saco-ta.”
Most of the river forms a segment of the border between Wisconsin and Upper Michigan. The Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest borders nearly the entire length along the Wisconsin side, while the Michigan DNR owns most of the land on the Michigan side. The Brule has that fun, small-river character in a beautiful, often intimate Northwoods setting. The landscape varies from small rolling hills with steep wooded banks, to a dense northern lowland forest of spruce/tamarack swamp, to open wetlands. Altogether the river flows through a wonderful and unique, North-
