generation dairy farm, owned and operated by Ken and Jackie Feltz since 1995. Ken and Jackie’s children will carry the farm and dairy store into the sixth generation. While the farm has grown green beans, sweet corn, and peas through the years, the focus since 1995 has been on dairy cattle. The operation has seen several phases of improvements and is now a high-tech facilities, with two robots that milk 100 cows! The use of robots enables the frequency of milking to be determined by the cows themselves. In 2017, Feltz’s Dairy Store opened to the public. This store offers a wide range high-quality items: diverse Wisconsin cheeses, a variety of flavors of local King Cone ice cream, Black Angus beef raised on Feltz Dairy Farms, Nueske’s award-winning bacon, glass bottles and plastic containers of white and chocolate milk, Wisconsin wines, coffee, fine chocolates, honey, baked goods, Feltz Family Farms cow’s milk soaps, seasonal gift boxes featuring gourmet treats, and more! Viewing windows allow shoppers and visitors to see cows being milked by the robots while indulging in a refreshing ice cream cone or fresh cheese curds. townships, and their citizens, Forest County has more than 300 miles of ATV routes and 47 miles of state-funded ATV trails. Two state trails—the Nicolet State Trail and the Wolf River State Trail—provide ATVers with abundant recreational opportunities. Both trails are abandoned railroad corridors that have been surfaced with gravel. Because the Nicolet State Trail meanders through the Nicolet National Forest and the Wolf River State Trail runs adjacent to the forest, with a segment (between Highway 64 and Lily) running near the Wolf River, opportunities for nearby camping, hunting, fishing, hiking, mountain biking, and cross-country skiing are plentiful. (No hunting or trapping is permitted on the trails, however.) The Nicolet State Trail passes through eastern Forest county communities of Carter, Wabeno, Blackwell, Laona, Cavour, and Newald. Be Wowed by History and Music at Oconto’s Historic Sites OCONTO – The Copper Culture State Park is a 51-acre park featuring a Native American burial ground from the Copper Culture, North America’s earliest metal users. Artifacts from this burial ground are dated to about 6,000 years ago, making this the oldest cemetery site in eastern North America and the oldest Copper cemetery in the nation. The site is on the National Register of Historic Places and is located in the city of Oconto with the burial area about 150 yards north of the Oconto River.

A tour guide will walk you through the displays to help demonstrate the significance of this site, giving an early look at Archaic Indian lifestyle, an early trade network, and first copper toolmakers in the country. A foot trail leads from the parking area to a stone monument at the location of the burial ground. The Oconto County Historical Society operates the Oconto Archaic Copper Museum, which is on the grounds. It is housed in a Belgian farmhouse built in 1924 by Charles Werrebroeck, the only example of this style of old-world architecture in the Oconto area. From Highway 22, turn south onto Copper Culture Way, and turn left onto Mill Street. Follow park signs. The Beyer Home, located at 917 Park Avenue in Oconto, is the historic house built by Cyrus and Kitty Hart in 1868. It is believed to be one of the first brick homes in Oconto County with its bricks being shipped to Oconto from DePere. Although the original structure was an Italianate-style home, George and Fanny Beyer remodeled it into a Queen Anne–style home— adding a wraparound porch, three-story tower room and entry, a south bay addition, and new windows fitted with leaded glass. Oconto County acquired the home in 1941, stipulating that it become a museum for all to enjoy! It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

Show is back for its annual appearance. Food, drinks, and a few booths by area nonprofit organizations will be ready at noon, and the show will start at 1 p.m. Drawing on Presque Isle’s logging heritage, the show features lumberjacks and lumberjills vying against one another in crosscut sawing, log rolling, axe throwing, and speed climbing. The event is hosted on the northside softball field, with plenty of space to spread out and picnic table seating provided. Attendees are welcome to bring in their own chairs or blankets as well. Sponsored by the generous residents of Presque Isle, the show is free!

You’re Never Far Away from Great Fishing in Sawyer County!
Northwest Region
SAWYER COUNTY – The Lake Chippewa Flowage is not your average destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Formed in 1924 by the Wisconsin/Minnesota Power and Light Company’s dam across the Chippewa River, backing up the waters of 11 natural lakes, 9 natural rivers, and innumerable ponds and streams, the Big Chip is Wisconsin’s largest wilderness lake and third-largest lake overall—with more than 17,000 water acres—preserved in its pristine wilderness state.

It also happens to be home to some of the finest fishing in the Midwest. Walleye, black crappie, musky and bluegill are the most popular species among Lake Chippewa Flowage anglers. DNR fishery management strategies optimize conditions for the reproduction, growth, and survival to preferred sizes of these species in particular. Yellow perch and smallmouth bass add diversity to the flowage’s fishing, and their numbers are on the rise. Largemouth bass and northern pike are present in increasing numbers, particularly in the western basin. These waters also spawned a world-record muskellunge. At 69 pounds, 11 ounces, this monster was taken by Louis Spray in 1949 and upheld by the Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame as one of the bestdocumented world record muskies of all time. Because the Lake Chippewa Flowage is so massive, with more than 200 miles of undeveloped shoreline and 140 islands,

we highly recommend using a lake map for navigation. You can also find more information about flowage resorts, dining, fish cribs, camping islands, original lakebeds, fishing reports, fishing guides, and things to do nearby at chippewaflowage.com. Although there is undoubtedly excellent fishing on the Big Chip, Sawyer County’s smaller waters also provide plentiful flat-water fishing opportunities. Connors Lake and Lake of the Pines are good fishing lakes with walleye, bass, musky, northern pike, and panfish present. These two lakes are close to each other, so you can fish one in the morning and the other in the afternoon. Spinners, spoons, and crank baits are the most frequently used baits in Connors and Lake of the Pines. Leeches, minnows, and crawlers are the live baits used. For you’re looking for a trophy musky, fish Connors Lake—a clear lake of 427 acres that has a 90-foot hole and an average depth of 40 feet. Walleye are the primary fish, and a healthy population of smallmouth bass, perch, and bluegill are also present. Try for walleye along the west shore in the fallen timber, on rock bars, and along weed lines, using slip bobbers or jigs with live bait. There is a state campground on the lake. At 273 acres, Lake of the Pines has a good population of musky, walleye, and northern pike and an excellent population of panfish, especially crappie. Not to be forgotten, Bass Lake is a little gem located about 3 miles off Highway W on Tower Hill Road. Camping and boat motors are not allowed on this lake, so boats must be walked in. Largemouth bass and bluegills are the two main species fished. Opt for fly rod fishing for “gills” using poppers or flies, or try using ultralight rods with worms and small leeches. For largemouth bass, use weedless crank baits, spinners, and jigs tipped with a piece of crawler.
