Editor’s COLUMN The die is once again cast for this scribbler It was with no small consternation that I noticed this past year that the letters “E,” “R,” “T” and “N” are no longer visible on my Apple keyboard. Years of pounding out thousands of news stories, human-interest features, travel stories and a myriad of other documents have completely worn away the black lettering. The letters “I” and “M” are fading also. With apologies to “Wheel of Fortune,” collectively those letters spell out “R-E-T-I-R-E-ME-N-T” for me. I’ve been a newspaperman all my life, shooting a picture of a house fire (with my snazzy Nikon Ftn) in my hometown right after Uncle Sam cut my Army enlistment by six months back in 1970 (thank you, thank you!). That photo ended up on the front page of the Barron News-Shield. The die for my future career was cast when I snagged a threequarter-page story/photo combo in the St. Paul Pioneer Press my third year of college. A succession of reporting and editor posts took me from Merrill to Olivia, MN, and back to Wisconsin’s New Richmond, Minocqua and Rhinelander. Thirteen years ago
Al Hanley, manager of the then Assured Publications, called to ask if I was interested Dean S. Acheson in writing for Action magazine. I was. Later, a change of ownership saw Al become owner/publisher of 5 Star Marketing and Distribution with me back again as editor of this travel and event magazine that continues to grow in coverage and pages. What a journey it’s been from black and white photos printed on newspaper stock to four-color process on every page and over 100 pages in some issues! But it’s time to say “Goodbye” to deadlines (ah yes – death, taxes and deadlines), to the great readers of this magazine, and to Al and the fellow staff at 5 Star. There will be a new person in this chair for the next issue. Next up? I want to see my young grandson catch his first muskie; prune my apple trees; chase squirrels from the bird feeders and, wouldn’t you know it, do more traveling in this wonderful land they call “Up North.”

Portage County Portage County has hundreds of miles of snowmobile trails COUNTYWIDE – Wisconsin is where snowmobiling was born and continues to offer some of the best snowmobiling opportunities you are likely to find. More than 200,000 registered snowmobiles hit Wisconsin’s 25,000 miles of groomed trails each winter. The riders discover new trails, meet new friends and enjoy amenities on the trails, such as restaurants and other pitstops. Portage County has nearly 300 miles of groomed scenic snowmobile trails to ride on. And while the trails may open a bit later than those “Up North,” they are still a lot of fun when they do. The county has six snowmobile trail zones and a snowmobile trail hotline for trail conditions. The number is 715-343-6277. There are 10 snowmobile clubs that belong to the Alliance of Portage County Snowmobile Clubs.
Central Region
Along your travels, or at one of the many places to stop and eat, you might encounter members of the Plover Spuds on Snow. This club doesn’t have any trails of its own to maintain. For years, the Plover area didn’t have a snowmobile club, and secondly, the trails that run through Plover were already established and being maintained by neighboring clubs.

Turtle River Pursuit ski race marks second year MERCER – The MECCA Ski Club has announced its second annual Turtle River Pursuit Cross-Country Ski Race will be the weekend of Feb. 15-16 at MECCA Trails in Mercer. The pursuit race combines two disciplines of cross-country skiing – classic and freestyle – into one combined time event. The first leg of the Pursuit, an 11K classic race, will be on Saturday. The second leg, an 11K freestyle race, will be on Sunday. Saturday’s results determine the skier’s starting time on Sunday. The first skier and team to cross the finish line on Sunday wins the twoday race. The race is open to both individuals and two-person teams. Awards will be given to the top three male and female individ-
uals, as well as the top three teams. Age-group winners will also receive awards. The 11K races are a great opportunity for first time racers and serious skiers to get out on the MECCA Trails, said a spokesperson. New this year is the Claire d’Loon 5K Classic Tour, a classic-style race, offered also on Saturday, Feb. 15, at MECCA. The shorter course is designed for recreational skiers as well as more experienced skiers looking for a shorter race. It’s perfect for families and friends looking for a fun, casual ski. The Tour is timed and awards will be given to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place male and female racers. The early-bird fee for the Pursuit is $50 for individuals, $25 for students, $90 for teams and $45 for student teams. After Dec. 31, fees increase. The cost to participate in the Claire d’Loon Classic is $15 for skiers 15 and under and $30 for skiers 16 and older. EAGLE RIVER –Rocking W Stables in Eagle River turns winter into a magical time when they bring out their big Belgian and Percherons draft horses for sleigh rides for families and others from mid-December to Jan. 1. Group rides are available from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. After spending a day out on the snowmobile or XC ski trails, kick back and relax with a memorable ride. By the time the ride ends, you might find yourself humming, “Over the river and through the woods, To grandmother’s house we go…” Led by the gentle horses, the sleigh or wagon weaves its way through beautiful wooded trails of the Northwoods with a halfway point of a warming bonfire, deliciously rich hot chocolate
and Christmas cheer! The rides last about an hour, and you just might see wildlife such as white-tailed deer and red squirrels near the trail. Rocking W’s bigger sleighs each hold 20-22 people, and they have three of those big sleighs, if a large group wants to go together for an outing. They have two vis-à-vis sleighs. One passenger can sit next to the driver of a vis-à-vis sleigh and four to six people can be seated in the back, which has two facing seats. If romance is in the air, cozy up with a loved one in one of their cutter sleighs. Rocking W Stables is located at 1890 Pleasure Island Road just off Highway 45 on Eagle River’s north side. NEW EVENT _
Vilas COUNTY Great racing action returns to World Championship Derby Complex By Gary Ridderbusch
EAGLE RIVER – It’s the world’s most prestigious snowmobile race week – the World Championship Snowmobile Derby – and it will celebrate 57 years of historic snowmobile racing action the week of Jan. 10-19, 2020. Recognized as the “Indianapolis 500 of Snowmobile Racing,” this event draws the best ice Oval and Sno-Cross racers from the United States, Canada and Europe to Eagle River. “One of the new featured events this year will be side-by-sides, better known as UTVs, running with studded tires on the fully-banked ice oval,” said Russ Davis, president and general manager. The property has been rebranded to the World Championship Derby Complex to take advantage of all the facility has to offer on a year-round basis. Today, the facility boasts 30-plus acres of grounds, a famed half-mile banked oval race track with a Sno-Cross track in the infield, a separate children’s race track, 15 corporate inside viewing suites, a 10,000-square-foot expo hall, heated and cooled viewing stands on the home straight and full food and liquor licenses with bars and new flat-screen TVs. The festive Jan. 10-19 show will include world-class ice Oval racing beginning the first weekend with Vintage races, high-flying Sno-Cross battles the second weekend, children’s racing, the debut of the side-by-side racing, the best under-the-lights show billed as Friday Night Thunder and the new Saturday Turbo Power Day. There will be fireworks both nights to kick off each night’s racing action. This year’s event also will include a display of unique Vintage and one-of-a-kind snowmobiles, including the very first snowmobile ever built in 1923, the Eliason Motor Toboggan, and the SkiDoo XR 4. Last year, Blaine Stephenson from Minnesota won his second straight World Championship, taking home the $10,000 prize and a coveted Eagle trophy. His quest now is to be a three-time winner at Eagle River. The 2020 Derby promises to be another battle of the greats, as the field is expected to include previous winners Nick Van Strydonk of Tomahawk and Stephenson. Also trying to get into the field this year will be female racer Sabrina Blanchet. Watch for the new class of Formula III 600s to make their debut at Eagle River through the weekend. It could possibly be the World Championship class of the future.
Vintage starts first The 2020 event will actually be a 10-day show that opens Jan. 10 and runs for the first three days, culminating with the Vintage World Championship Sunday, Jan. 12. Promoters are calling it “Snowmobile Week at the World Championship Derby Complex.”

Wolf River

hether your preferred species is panfish or musky, with 841 natural lakes, 225 streams, and 200 spring ponds, your Langlade County fishing opportunities are virtually limitless. While many of our lakes are accessible by public launch, most of our lakes are less than 100 acres in size and are located in remote forest settings. Nearly 400 miles of trout streams are well stocked with brook, brown, and rainbow trout.
The Wolf River: Among the Best in the Midwest for Trout Fishing The Wolf River, in eastern Langlade County, is considered one of the finest trout streams in the Midwest. May and June bring excellent dry-fly fishing, but you can count on good catches into autumn. The famous trout waters span 40 miles between Highway T and Highway M to the south and are divided into 10 public access points. The steep gradient and resulting complex rapids of this section of the river should only be navigated by experienced anglers. However, the river moves more slowly from Post Lake Dam to Highway T, where it is easy to float with a canoe. There, anglers will delight in excellent populations of northern pike, walleye, bass, and musky.

Paddling in Langlade County
E
astern Langlade County is home to one of the best whitewater rivers in the Midwest: the famous Wolf River. This river offers quiet, placid waters in the northern section and complex and challenging rapids in the southern sections. Paddling the Wolf River is a thrilling adventure; the river requires paddlers’ great respect and sound judgment. The southern sections are not recommended for children younger than eight or non-swimmers. It is highly recommended that paddlers arrange their trip through one of the excellent rafting outfitters that specialize in Wolf River paddling.

The Taste of Conover Not Just a “Taste”
It’s hard to believe that a small town in Northern Wisconsin can have some of the best restaurants in the state. About thirteen years ago members of the Town of Conover decided to put together a “Taste of Conover” to introduce the area to what they consider, great food! The restaurants jumped at the chance to have people taste their specialty items. The Taste of Conover was set up in the town park with live music, tents to get out of the sun, activities for kids, and the great aroma of delicious food. Apparently, that was all that was needed – everyone turned out. One thing about Conover, they don’t do anything in a small way. People expected “a taste” and came away with a plate full. And, there were 15 different vendors, so, of course, everyone had to try everything. NO ONE went away hungry. Lots of beverages were consumed to wash down the food. Kids had butter dripping off their chins from the slow roasted corn on the cob (made for a very slippery day for them in the bounce house). Other kids took turns in the dunk tank – a great way to cool off on a hot day. AND, the food was sold out quickly. Now, thirteen years later, people come from all over the state, the last Sunday in June, to the “Taste of Conover”. People have told us that they plan their vacation around the event because Con-
over actually has some of the best food in the state. Lots of improvements have been made. Lots more food. Serving trays are provided so everyone can carry lots of food items to their favorite spot under the tent to listen to music, have a beverage or two, and go back for more. The kids are still enjoying it all. You can find almost any type of food, a lot locally grown, some gluten free, some organic, something for everyone. It has become a relaxing Sunday afternoon in the park, tummies full, containers to go, and smiling faces. Conover may be a SMALL town in northern Wisconsin, but it sure provides a BIG quench to your appetite. Join us at the next “Taste of Conover” on Sunday, June 28th from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Guaranteed – you won’t go away hungry!
Town History
a 112 year old community
The man for whom our town is named is Seth H. Conover, who came from Plymouth, Wisconsin, and was a prominent cheese buyer. Conover’s hobbies were fishing and hunting. He came to the Northwoods on the logging trains that the timber industry used to get wood to the mills of Central and Southern Wisconsin. Seth Conover became quite friendly with some of the officials of the CNW Railroad and went on hunting and fishing trips with them. He was familiar with our area and felt that the location of present Conover was as close as possible to Big Twin Lake where he enjoyed fishing. After stopping at the same place for several years, the railroad men began referring to it as Conover’s Place and decided to build a station there. In time it was formally designated Conover on the railroad maps. In 1891, seventy-three acres of land were deeded to Seth Conover on Big Twin Lake and later became Lakota Resort. Guests to the resort were met at the rail station in Conover by a team and wagon for transport. Tourists came from the city and stayed for the season. On January 3, 1907, the town of Conover was formally set aside from the town of Eagle River. Conover is truly a wonderful place to visit because of its natural beauty and rich past. Visit our town’s website: www.townofconover.com and read the entire story of our past.

CASTA Ski Trails is a package deal CUMBERLAND -- Timberland Hills Ski Area, ideally suited for cross-country skiing, is about nine miles northwest of Cumberland. The non-profit Cumberland Area Ski Touring Association (CASTA) maintains and grooms Timberland Hills in Burnett County and the nearby Timberland West Trail, located in Barron County. Memberships are $40 for a family or $30 for a single membership. Additional donations are appreciated. The various loops in the Timberland Hills’ 24 km trail system easily accommodate the beginner while still offering a challenge to the veteran skier. Trails are machine groomed 16-18 feet wide with double classic tracks on one side and wide skating on the other. The trail system is situated on 2,400 acres of Burnett County forestlands. The elevation at the parking lot is 1,450 feet but drops to 1,200 by the time the northeastern part of the trail is reached. Skiers are treated to the natural springs that bubble near the trail throughout the year. Take a break and enjoy the springs and that of the high hardwood ridges that surround it. The beginner’s trails are near the parking lot and are relatively flat. They wind through a spectacular hardwood forest. The intermediate loop starts easy and becomes more challenging as it runs
along the 80- to 90-foot high ridges. A longer outside loop, which includes the screaming hills of “The Ridge Run” and “The Outer Loop,” should challenge even the most advanced skier, who will also see beautiful scenery and changing terrain. Located on Hwy. H, just south of Timberland Hills by 1.5 miles, is the Timberland West trail that meanders through 500 acres of Barron County forestland. Though it’s mostly suited for beginners, the 2.5 km lighted ski trail will appeal to all. This machine groomed trail is about 30 feet wide with classic tracks around the perimeter and a wide skating lane down the middle. Lights go on about dusk and go off at approximately 11 p.m. There is one small hill to transverse with the rest of the trail on gently rolling terrain. Ski quietly along the trail and you may see a deer stopped in its tracks. Testifying to its popularity, the CASTA trail plays host to the U.S.S.A. District Cross Country Championship, the Indianhead Classic and Ringu Rinnet meet. Directions: Timberland Hills – Located 9 miles northwest of Cumberland on Boyd Road, off Hwy. H. Timberland West – Located 1-1/2 miles south of Timberland Hills on Hwy. H. For trail conditions, call 715-822-3727.

Luck’s Ice Castle
is a very cool attraction LUCK – Each year, during the second weekend in February, the community of Luck celebrates winter with their festive Luck Winter Carnival. As part of the fun, they bring a frosty palace to life for both romantic grown-ups and kids who know every Frozen song lyric by heart.
Most folks attend the Thursday through Saturday activities: Thursday night starts with the lighting of the ice castle. A U.S. Flag retirement ceremony Friday kicks off the Queen Coronation, followed by fireworks on Big Butternut Lake. Saturday tops off the weekend with a dazzling Torchlight Parade. But the Saturday before Winter Carnival officially arrives, 30 to 40 townspeople gather to build the elaborate ice castle on the north end of Main Street. Work begins early that morning on Big Butternut Lake. Of course, the lake ice has to be thick enough to
There, they use chainsaws to cut 2’ x 2’ blocks of ice, ending up with approximately 130 when done. These are floated to the opening in the ice where huge ice tongs are positioned to pick up the approximately 450-pound blocks of ice. The blocks are moved to a conveyor, where a chainsaw cuts them in half; now there are 260 blocks. They are then pushed down the conveyor, where once again with chainsaws the rough ice is shaved off and the block is “squared up.” From there the blocks are loaded onto a trailer and transported to Main Street. Once at the building site, they are removed from the trailer using a front-end loader and positioned per the architectural drawing by resident Ron Erickson. Block by block, the ice castle emerges after about seven hours of work that began that morning. The typical ice castle measures 30’ by 20’ wide and 8’ high. Then over the next few days, a small crew adds finishing touches, including ice benches or tables and candleholders. Lights are added and voila! – a stunning ice castle fit for Luck’s Royalty. Visitors can go inside and, of course, it’s a favorite for photographers, both day and night.

CABLE – Give avian researchers a gift this year – volunteer to be a bird counter on during the Christmas Bird Count (CBC) project on Saturday, Dec. 14. Volunteers will assist the National Audubon Society (NAS) in counting birds in the Cable and Hayward areas, both in the field and at bird feeders. Give the Cable Natural History Museum a call at 715-798-3890 or e-mail naturalist Haley Appleman at haley@cablemuseum.org for more information if you are interested in volunteering. There is a specific methodology to the CBC, and all participants
must make arrangements to participate in advance with the circle compiler within an established circle, but anyone can participate. Each count takes place in an established 15-mile-diameter circle, and is organized by a count compiler. Count volunteers follow specified routes through a designated 15-mile-diameter circle, counting every bird they see or hear all day. It’s not just a species tally – all birds are counted all day, giving an indication of the total number of birds in the circle that day. If you are a beginning birder, you will be able to join a group that includes at least one experienced birdwatcher. If your home is within the boundaries of a CBC circle, then you can stay at home and report the birds that visit your feeder on count day as long as you have made prior arrangement with the count compiler. Check out the sign-up link above during the signup season for information on how to contact the compiler.
