Editor’s COLUMN A New Era for Up North Action It’s more than the simple turn of the calendar page; 2020 is not just another new year but a constant inspiration to strive for clarity and focus—20/20 vision—to truly see what came before and where we’re headed next. Fittingly, as I stepped into my new role as editor at the beginning of 2020, I’ve been tasked to reflect on Up North Action’s past—and envisage its future.
So what has transpired so far? We’ve given our website a makeover. In addition to its new look and feel, we’ve established a Travelogue, where you’ll find new articles each week. And we’ve revamped our Events page—with a search feature and large, vibrant photos that bring upcoming events to life. We’ve also turned up the dial on our social media presence.
Up North Action’s long history of delivering fascinating articles about northern Wisconsin and U.P. Michigan has helped you, our readers, make the most of your relished time Up North. Our editor emeritus, Dean Acheson, brought his wealth of journalistic experience and deep appreciation of all things Up North to Action. In other words, I’ve got big shoes to fill, and I know it.
What comes next? In 2020, we want to continue to build upon the momentum we gained last year. We aim to engage with our readers more on Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest. Not only do we love to hear about your adventures Up North, but we also want to know what images, information, and stories, are most valuable to you.
Since my first day at Up North Action in 2019, there has been an infectious enthusiasm for innovation. But not just newness for the sake of newness but, rather, innovation to streamline our readers’ access to information about the region’s amazing attractions, all while preserving the company’s bedrock products, services, and values.
And, of course, we want to bring you even more exciting events, stories, and photos to show you what an incredible region this is.

Plan the Fishing Trip of a Lifetime in the Northwoods
onsidering there are 15,074 documented lakes in Wisconsin, it’s safe to say that fishing is a pretty big deal around here—and a way of life for many. But with so many waterways and species of fish, there is a lot to learn. Whether you are an advanced angler or a complete newbie, hiring a fishing guide and embarking on a guided fishing trip will teach you a ton and give you an unforgettable day Up North.
Why Hire a Fishing Guide?
4 You’re a first-timer looking to learn about equipment, basic techniques, and where to go for your future excursions. 4 You’re an experienced angler looking to fish a finicky species. 4 You’re a newcomer Up North and are looking to learn the local best spots. 4 You have some experience under your belt, but you’re looking to improve your technique. 4 You want an immersive experience in the Northwoods and want to learn more about this region’s captivating geographical features and wildlife. 4 You’re looking for access to specialty equipment. 4 You are looking for an unforgettable day in a beautiful location with great people.
Find the Guide Who Will Craft the Experience You’re Looking For
While deciding on a guide, consider if that guide service specializes in your preferred species, caters to your experience level, is located in proximity to your home base, and offers the type of experience you want (whether it’s large resort lakes or a remote wade-in trout stream). Luckily, there are many excellent guides in the Northwoods. Here are two comprehensive bait and tackle shops in the Northwoods that also staff reputable guides.
Rollie & Helen’s Musky Shop
Rollie & Helen’s Musky Shop is not only “the world’s premier musky fishing outfitter”; they also provide expert guides to increase your knowledge, insights, and skills as a musky hunter. Regardless of your previous experience, the guides at Rollie & Helen’s Musky Shop will take you on a fishing adventure of a lifetime. The staff specializes in walleye, bass, northern pike, panfish, and, of course, musky. Complimentary use of equipment, transportation, a professional guide, a high-tech fishing boat with top-notch equipment, and a full day on the water

will be provided, as well as assistance with lodging reservations, fish cleaning and freezing, photos, and taxidermy, as desired. For more information, visit muskyshop.com.
Turtle River Trading Company
This bait and tackle shop in Mercer offers not just nine tanks of fresh live bait, fishing licenses, and a wide variety of name-brand rods and reels. Turtle River Trading Company also offers a comprehensive fishing guide service. The guides have decades of experience fishing the Turtle Flambeau Flowage as well as many other lakes in the area. Simply call Turtle River and tell the staff about your level of experience and what kind of fish you would like to fish for, and they will contact the right guide for you to make arrangements for your fishing trip of a lifetime. For more information, visit turtlerivertrading.com.
Make the Most of Your Day on the Water
When consulting with the guide service and arranging the trip, be honest about your previous experience, ability level, and goals so your guide can plan an appropriate outing. The guide wants you to have a positive, successful experience.
Be Prepared
In addition to any equipment you’ve discussed with your guide, bring a hat, sunscreen, polarized sunglasses, warm layers, a waterproof jacket, snacks, a trash bag, and gratuities to your guide for his or her time and services. You’ll also need your Wisconsin or Michigan fishing license. And don’t forget your camera! Although some guides provide photography, with scenery this spectacular, you’re going to want to make sure you have keepsake photos of your memorable trip.
Book a Stay for the Perfect Fishing Getaway

Portage County Explore This Untouched Pinery in Portage County PLOVER AREA – With Town of Plover as your home base, you can explore in any direction and find beautiful and interesting places to visit. One of them is a State Natural Area known as the New Hope Pines. As one of the largest (at 171 acres) and least disturbed northern dry-mesic forests remaining in central Wisconsin, New Hope Pines enables us to imagine the vast pineries this region held before it was settled. Today, the Wisconsin DNR manages the state-owned property, which was designated a State Natural Area in 1983. Cross-country ski or hike through the forest of oak, pine, and maple trees. The site’s steep, irregular topography you’ll feel underfoot is a gift from the last glacier. Though the stand comprises predominantly young trees with only scattered old growth, the white pines that dominate the forestscape are more than 100 feet high and up to two feet in diameter. You’ll also find shrubs— including American hazelnut, northern bush honeysuckle, and round-leaved dogwood. Groundlayer species present among New Hope Pines include bracken fern, wild sarsaparilla, American starflower, large-flowered trillium, Canada mayflower, partridgeberry, and big-leaved aster. If you’re quiet, you might get a glimpse of the abundant wildlife, such as woodpeckers and porcupines.

The trail is surfaced with crushed limestone, packed to a smooth surface that’s perfect for many activities all year long. Permitted Trail Activities In the winter, Tomorrow River State Trail is open to snowmobilers, skiers, and dog sledders.
Central Region
During spring, summer, and fall, bicyclists, hikers, joggers, and horseback riders are welcome to use the trail. Dogs must be leashed at all times, and ATVs are not allowed on the trail. In Portage County, the horse trail is a separate 14-mile trail alongside the limestone trail from Plover to Waupaca County. Horses should never be on the limestone trail except in posted areas where the trail is shared. Contact Waupaca County for horse trail information in that county. Bicyclists and horseback riders 16 years or older are required to have either a state or county trail pass in order to use the trail. Trail passes are available at the trailheads’ self-registration stations or at the Portage County and Waupaca County park offices.

Travel Notes Trailheads are located off Twin Towers Drive in Plover and Custer Road, Amherst Junction, and Cate Park in Amherst. All Portage County trailheads accommodate horse trailers. Additional parking and public restrooms are available at Lake Emily Park. There is a short, one-mile gap in the trail in Amherst Junction. Trail users will need to use local roads as the trail route. The eastern terminus of the trail in Waupaca County ends at Wolf Road. Kettlebowl Ski Area Offers Snowboarding Downhill and XC Skiing for the Entire Family
The County of Trail’s Other Excellent XC Opportunities The vast forests featuring hills, kettles, and unmatched scenery makes Langlade County a great destination for cross-country skiing. BRYANT – The Kettlebowl Ski Area is a publicly owned facility providing great slope opportunities for downhill skiers, snowboarders, and cross-country skiers, conveniently located on Highway 52, 17 miles northeast of Antigo. Hit the Slopes Kettlebowl Downhill Ski Area is a naturally made snow slope featuring five ski runs. It is located at a kettle hole moraine that was transformed into a ski facility in 1956. The facility includes five towropes, plenty of parking, concessions, and a new chalet with indoor restrooms, food available to purchase, and a large warming area featuring a panoramic view of the slope.

Glaciers formed this unique terrain thousands of years ago. The forest features stands of pines and hemlocks. The Art of the Northwoods Bloody Mary: A Round-Up NORTHWOODS REGIONWIDE – In other regions, the Bloody Mary is a pretty run-of-the-mill and largely ignored cocktail. No fuss or fanfare—and certainly no cheese curds or sliders. Just a simple veggie-based cocktail garnished with a leafy stalk of celery. Ho hum.
Northwoods Region
But here, Bloody Marys generate excitement! It’s easy to see why. Northwoods Marys are not merely cocktails but complete meals artfully balanced over a chilled, spicy beverage, accompanied by a tiny beer snit, to boot.
28
The history of the Bloody Mary, like most cocktail history, is rather muddled, so the evolution of this region’s increasingly over-the-top Bloody Mary isn’t well defined. What is clear, however, is that if you’re looking for an impressive Bloody Mary, you have your pick of incredible options in the Northwoods. Here’s a round-up of some of our favorites. CT’s Deli – Rhinelander Although CT’s Deli was established fairly recently, in 2015, it quickly became a staple in the Rhinelander community. CT’s sandwiches—piled high with expertly smoked meats and fine local cheeses in clever combinations—are a much-soughtafter lunch break for the Monday-through-Friday crowd. But

this weekend, gather your pals and savor everything you love about CT’s fare…in Bloody Mary form. Behold the Lunchbox Bloody Mary, which generously serves two to four people. Bucketheads – Rhinelander
Northwoods Region
Bucketheads is an easygoing tavern with a rustic bar, pub grub, billiards, and darts. It also happens to offer one of the top-rated Bloody Marys in Rhinelander. Sayner Pub – Sayner If you’re looking for a laid back place to watch the game, answer your craving for Friday fish fry or pizza, head to the Sayner Pub in downtown Sayner. Sayner Pub is known for its fantastic 22-ounce Bloody Mary, generously garnished with all of your favorites. Sayner Pub is open year-round: Stop in with your snowmobile club in the winter, or come to enjoy live music shows on lazy summer weekends. Dublin Sports Bar and Grill – Conover The Dublin Sports Bar and Grill will be your new favorite place to watch the game and linger longer to enjoy the beautiful lakeside view. On Sundays, they have a make-your-own Bloody Mary bar, so you can pile on your favorite fix-ins and custom-create your perfect cocktail.

Explore Wisconsin’s Last Wilderness
VilasCOUNTY
PRESQUE ISLE – Nature lovers and recreation enthusiasts have a lot to discover and enjoy in Presque Isle, a place known as “Wisconsin’s Last Wilderness.” The quaint town lies within the Northwoods, in the forest and glacial lake country that comprises Vilas County. More than 77 square miles of pine and hardwood forests, lakes, and streams in the county draw thousands of visitors each year, but with that much land and water, it doesn’t feel crowded at all. The Last Wilderness is immediately adjacent to Michigan’s sprawling Ottawa National Forest, within Wisconsin’s 200,000+ acres of the Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest. Truly a four-season recreation paradise, Presque Isle enjoys a long winter sports season, thanks to its proximity to Lake Superior’s lake-effect snow. Visitors can hop on their snowmobiles and ride for hundreds of miles on marked and groomed trails that meander through beautiful forests and across pristine frozen lakes. Located at the hub of a major snowmobile system, riders can spend a week and explore a different trail each day. Cross-country skiers and snowshoers: adventures await you, too. Discover a groomed trail or bushwhack your way across the landscape. And ice fishers won’t run out of lakes to fish, even if they visit a new lake every day during their stay. With hospitality second to none, great eats at restaurants and taverns, and cozy stays at local lodges, Presque Isle is the ideal destination for your day trip, weeklong retreat, girls’ getaway, or romantic trip this season.

A Rich History
The history of Phelps, Wisconsin, is inextricably intertwined with the fur trading and logging days of the 18th and 19th centuries, and with the tourism trade. Lac Vieux Desert was a crossroads for the fur trade and helped to draw the first business to the area in 1896. Learn about this and more with a visit to the Phelps Historical Museum, open May through October.
Nestled in the Forest Phelps is located 15 miles northeast of Eagle River, WI, in Vilas County. With a population of just over 1,500 people, this quiet town is nestled within the 650,000-acre Nicolet National Forest. And Ottawa National Forest is just two miles to the north in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

Phelps community members have been hard at work to improve what Phelps has to offer for visitors and locals. Plans are underway to create a green space on the shore of North Twin Lake, the previous location of the infamous Big Store. This space will enhance the outdoor offerings of the area and provide a beautiful, functional area for community events, weddings, reunions, or lounging on a warm summer day. Even bigger and better steps forward are on the horizon as our Town Board and local organizations work together to ensure a successful future for this small community.

Discover Adventure... Answer the Call of the forest... Did you know that nearly 75% of Phelps is national or state forest land? You may think that the trees and forests are just pretty scenery, but we know better in the Northwoods! We see them as even more countless adventures to be discovered!
Bird Watching
Bird watching may be a quiet hobby, but it can be an exciting one, especially in an area with nearly 400 different species! Any season can offer a rewarding and unique birding experience. The best part – this outdoor activity requires no skills or gear. (Although a pair of binoculars and a good bird book help.) From wild turkeys and great horned owls to the more delicate indigo buntings and warblers, your eyes and your ears will be delighted. And you can’t miss the magnificent bald eagles and large ospreys flying above.
Wildlife
Although a slightly less common sight, it’s quite easy to catch a glimpse of any number of wild animals. You can spot them through the trees while driving the country roads or hiking the forests. Watch for whitetail deer, red fox, otter, black bear, and more. Just remember – they are wild animals and shouldn’t be approached. Enjoy the chance to see them in their natural habitat from afar.

Local Tips: • A traditional cache typically features a logbook but could hold a travel bug that is meant to move around the world. • Multi-cache involves 2 or more cache locations, with clues leading to the final logbook. • A mystery cache requires a puzzle to solve to get the correct coordinates. Welcome
aunting wails of loons echo across still waters. Tall pines whisper and bow gracefully with the breeze. Nearby, children are laughing, and the whine of a fishing reel’s drag protesting the pull of a mighty muskie is just within earshot. And some say they can still hear the sound of a far-off train whistle blowing in the distance – ghostly remembrance of logging days gone by. It seems a bit like heaven, until suddenly, you realize that you have found yourself in Sayner-Star Lake. The two villages, linked by a lovely seven-mile drive along rustic Hwy N and Hwy K, comprise the Town of Plum Lake. Aside from the richness of the area’s natural wilderness, Sayner and Star Lake offer an abundance of fine restaurants, a challenging nine-hole golf course, housekeeping resorts, tennis courts, pristine lakes teeming with muskie, bass, and walleye, groomed snowmobile and cross-country ski trails, paved bike trails, marked hiking trails, a fully dressed library, historical museums, a full-service quilt shop, and unique retail shops offering everything from gifts and home furnishings to haute couture from Paris. Truly, finding yourself in Sayner-Star Lake will guarantee a vacation you’ll want to replicate over and over again!

Annual Events Draw Visitors to Sayner-Star Lake
T
he 22nd Annual Sayner Spring Stampede, held every first weekend in May, is expected to draw hundreds of rubber stampers to participate in what promises to be the best Stampede in the event’s history.
Scheduled for May 1st and 2nd, this year’s Stampede will provide a fun and energizing atmosphere that will include an expansive Rubber Stamp Convention where artists can exchange cards, register to win cash prizes, and participate in Make & Take projects and Round Robins. Classes offered will provide instruction, allowing participants to create art reflecting inspiring sentiments with beautiful imagery. “It’s wonderful to see the results when this group of creative people share their ideas and experience with one another,” says Jill Lemke, Stampede Coordinator. A popular feature of the Sayner Stampede is the New/Used Stamp Sale, which is now a two-day event so that convention goers have plenty of time to do it all. The Stamp Sale provides an exciting marketplace where vendors and attendees alike can buy and sell new and used stamps, as well as countless other stamping supplies. Attendees wishing to bring their rubber stamps to sell can visit www.saynerstampede.com for participation instructions. For more information about this popular event, contact Jill Lemke at info@saynerstampede.com.
4th of July Parade Like a scene out of a Norman Rockwell painting, Sayner-Star Lake’s annual 4th of July Parade brings out the kid in all of us. Beginning at 3pm on the 4th on downtown Sayner’s Main Street, the parade features an array of floats, as well as candy and stuffed animals for children. All are invited to attend and participate by entering a float in each year’s parade, sponsored by the Sayner-Star Lake Lions and Lionesses. First-, second-, and third-place trophies are awarded to the floats best adhering to the parade’s annual theme. The day’s festivities begin at noon in Sayner’s
Community Park, where the Sayner-Star Lake Firemen offer a delicious Chicken & Sweet Corn Barbeque. At 7pm, the Plum Ski-ters perform a patriotic ski show on Plum Lake, and at dusk, a grand fireworks display begins behind the Plum Lake Library. For more information, contact Gary Kaphignst at (715) 542-2751 or garykaphingst@gmail.com.
7th Annual Sayner Street Fair & 5K Later in the summer, on the first Sunday of August, the Sayner Street Fair draws crowds from far and wide. Scheduled this year for August 2nd on Sayner’s Main Street, the town of Sayner is prepared to dazzle Fair attendees with an abundance of entertainment, food, exhibits, art, and more. Activities begin with the newly added Street Fair 5K (for registration information, visit www. sayner-starlake.org) and will continue with a craft fair and festival at 9am, which will include craft vendors from all over the Midwest, live music and dancing in the street, games for kids, and beer and food vendors. Returning this year by popular demand will be the Touch-a-Truck hands-on truck show! The Fair will also feature special promotions in Sayner’s retail shops. Be sure to mark your calendar and plan to visit Sayner, where the whole family can enjoy this grand event! For more information, contact Carrie Schalinske at (715) 605-2534.

Girls’ Day Out
othing draws women together better than a day out shopping or crafting together. In Sayner, first head to Traditions, and find a wide selection of items that depart from the average “Northwoods flavor.” Traditions is a full-service gift and home furnishings boutique offering a wide selection frequently updated with new, fashionable lines from suppliers on the cutting edge. Women’s accessories are also available in abundance. Next, walk next door to GreenWeavers to find an array of women’s apparel, ranging from casual wear to dressy, knockout ensembles for special occasions. Staff is available every day to help you mix and match your wardrobe, find packable pieces for travel, and turn heads everywhere you go! If hands-on crafting is more your style, visit Plum Lake Quilts, a fullservice quilt shop offering classes, longarm quilting services, fabrics galore, and an array of patterns and kits. Owner Pat Anderson has over 30 years of quilting experience and a passion for her “Open Sew” every Wednesday, where women can socialize, compare ideas, and sew together. After hitting the shops in Sayner, travel east out of town on County Road N to Star Lake. There, you’ll find The Old Milltown Depot & The Old School House Gallery. Located in a restored 90-year-old, one-room schoolhouse, The Gallery offers gifts and art items. The Depot is a museum where the staff can provide a plethora of interesting tales of the history of Star Lake.

GreenWeavers
Dedicated to the Art of Fashion GreenWeavers Gift & Apparel offers women’s apparel from across the globe while providing personal fashion consulting
S
hopping for women’s apparel can be daunting, but at GreenWeavers, women find their quest for style can be fun, focused, and inspiring.
“Most women have a vision of how they want to look, but finding the right clothing to define one’s own, unique style takes time, energy and patience,” says Wendy Kimbrell, GreenWeavers owner. “Because we’re all so uber-busy, many women simply don’t have time to explore the possibilities of their wardrobes. “At GreenWeavers, we do the work for them.”
Custom Garments Not Online
“Good clothing is all about the fabric.” – Wendy Kimbrell,, GreenWeavers Owner
‘The work’ begins with GreenWeavers personnel negotiating with vendors across the globe to create unique apparel not offered in mainstream retail outlets or online. Often, staffers offer creative input to designers who make apparel specifically for GreenWeavers. In addition, GreenWeavers is much larger than the average urban boutique. “Most city boutiques are forced to pay astronomical rents for teeny spaces,” Kimbrell says. “Because of our location, GreenWeavers can offer a huge volume of designer clothing at rural, not urban, prices.” Located in the center of town on Sayner’s Main Street, GreenWeavers has been providing fashion advice and apparel for 19 years. Boasting more than 3,000 sq. ft. of retail space, there is plenty of room for patrons to relax and spend time finding just the right outfits.
Relaxing and Fun “Some women literally spend the entire day here,” Kimbrell laughs. “Even the men are happy about that, because we’re right across the street from The Sayner Pub, where husbands often pass the time watching a game, or shooting the breeze with the locals.” Everyday wear abounds at GreenWeavers, which provides pants, shirts, tunics, dresses, skirts and coats for women wishing to spruce up their work and play wardrobes. Special occasion apparel for reunions, parties, conventions and cruises is vast and varied. And artsy accessories like shoes, jewelry, scarves, shawls, handbags and hats abound. But a special occasion is not the only time a woman wants to look good, Kimbrell says. “Women should look fantastic wherever they go,” she says. “Because when you look good, you feel good, and you’re just happier.” Jeanne Schmidt, GreenWeavers assistant manager, agrees. “It’s rewarding when we achieve a particular style, or look, that a customer has long been searching for,” she says. “When that happens, women literally light up, and walk out of the store feeling satisfied and empowered. Women should feel like that every day, wherever they go.”
Fashion Consulting Schmidt adds that GreenWeavers sales associates always offer honest advice and never try to sell patrons clothing that does not look terrific on them. “It’s so important to find garments that accent the finer attributes of your body type,” she says. “It’s difficult to achieve that by shopping online, which is why GreenWeavers is committed to providing its customers with solid, one-onone fashion consulting, as well as solutions to sizing, color and fabric issues.” Furthermore, all of the boutique’s garments are made of high-quality fabrics that last. Says Kimbrell, “Good clothing is all about the fabric. Instead of wasting money on items that don’t fit well and deteriorate in a year or two, it’s smarter to spend more on a garment that’s going to gracefully lay across your body, last ten years, and require minimal care.” Sizes at GreenWeavers range from XS to XXL so that women of all shapes and sizes can make the most out of what the boutique has to offer. And they do make the most of them. Chicago resident Loretta Pierson, for instance, travels from Chicago to GreenWeavers twice annually. “I’ve been shopping for my clothes at GreenWeavers for 16 years now, and I simply won’t buy clothes anyplace else,” Pierson says. “Why would I?” 2965 State Highway 155 | Sayner, WI 54560 | (715) 542-2884

The Cyclist Also in Sayner, the paved Heart of Vilas County Bike Trail System links smoothly northward to the Boulder Junction bike paths and westward to the St. Germain Trails. The Vilas County Bike Trail offers over 50 miles of paved forest trails exhuming scents of evergreen, wildflower, and loam. Six-feet wide with hills just challenging enough – you won’t have to walk your bike uphill! Bike trail maps are available at Sayner Mobil Express on Main Street, as well as several other Sayner businesses. For a more rugged experience, head to Razorback Ridges. Here you will experience a different type of ride on 30 miles worth of mountain bike trails. Don’t have a bike? Not a problem. The Corner Store, located on Highway N in Sayner, has bikes to rent, and a full supply of Vilas County Bike Trail maps on hand. Says Corner Store owner Mary Debilzen, “We are your one-stop-shop for creating the perfect Northwoods Wisconsin experience.” The Corner Store has served residents, campers, and visitors in the surrounding area for more than 80 years. Centrally located within the
Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest and the SaynerStar Lake area, The Corner Store is directly adjacent to over 50 miles of paved bike trails and 16 miles of mountain bike and cross-country ski trails, and it is near many lakes and campgrounds. The Corner Store is also right on the way to the Plum Ski-ters waterski show.
The Golfer Plum Lake Golf Course, located on the south shore of Plum Lake, offers a challenging nine-hole course rich with history and the sounds and fragrance of the best of the Northwoods. Founded in 1912, it is the oldest nine-hole golf course in Wisconsin, featuring a turn-ofthe-century clubhouse, wraparound porch, and a spectacular view of the lake.
On the Water Swimming, boating, and water sports opportunities abound in Sayner-Star Lake. For instance, Sayner’s Crystal Lake is located next to one of the cleanest, clearest, safest swimming beaches in the Midwest. At just under 90 acres in size and a maximum depth of 67 feet, the water is clear and deep. It’s a favorite for scuba divers as well as recreational swimmers. Crystal Lake beach is perfect for families of all ages. Come and picnic at the lovely picnic area next to the beach, or camp at several well-equipped campsites on the state-owned property. Before you head onto the water, check out the canoes and kayaks available for rent at Up North Traders, located on Main Street in Sayner. Kayaks and paddleboards are also available to rent at The Corner Store on Highway N. Next, you’ll need to choose from the wonderful lakes in the area to paddle on. Just refer to the map in this booklet. If a canoe or kayak is not your cup of tea, Errington’s Resort has boats available for rent. At the end of your day, enjoy the Plum Ski-ters water ski show in Sayner on select days at 7pm located at Statehouse Point – a short 2.5 miles down Razorback Road. Finally, fishing opportunities in the Sayner-Star Lake area abound. See page 10 for fishing information.

More than Just a Fish Story
nglers who cast their lines across the rich waters of SaynerStar Lake’s fishing lakes are likely to return to shore either with fish-filled live wells or a trophy muskie large enough to mount. And when those anglers tell Sayner-Star Lake fish stories, they’re probably true.
“The combination of Plum Lake, Star Lake and Razorback Lake gives this community the best smallmouth fishing in America,” says Mike Errington, a licensed guide based in Star Lake. “And if you’re looking to catch a muskie, the population in the Irving, Ballard, and White Birch lake chain is just incredible.” Encompassing 7,554 acres of water, Sayner and Star Lake are located in the headwaters of two drainage basins – the Manitowish River basin flowing to the west and the Wisconsin River basin flowing to the south. The two communities, which comprise the Town of Plum Lake, offer 31 boat landings, as well as 50 named and 95 unnamed lakes. Beneath the surface lies an abundance of smallmouth bass, walleye, crappie, bluegill, perch, northern pike, and, of course, muskie. Several smaller streams are managed for trout, while Sayner’s Plum Creek receives the most attention from trout anglers.

Partly due to the 18-inch minimum required to keep a smallmouth bass or walleye (a regulation imposed by the Wisconsin

Department of Natural Resources to control crayfish populations in the Town of Plum Lake) and partly due to the simple fact that smallmouth bass and walleye thrive in the cold-water temperatures of Wisconsin’s Northwoods, the fisheries in the Town of Plum Lake are teeming with fish, and the smallmouths are getting “huge,” Errington says. “This summer, I caught 16 smallmouths over six pounds and two of those were over seven pounds,” he says. Aside from trophy muskies and smallmouths, which often appeal to more experienced anglers, Plum Lake’s fisheries also offer an abundance of panfish that most children and beginners can catch easily.
Bait and Gear Aplenty In Sayner, anglers can stock up on bait and gear at Up North Traders, which rents boat motors, canoes, and kayaks. It also sells live bait, fishing tackle, and fishing licenses. Sayner’s The Corner Store also offers bait and fishing supplies, as well as kayak and paddleboard rentals. If you’re in Star Lake, the Star Lake Store is your destination for live bait and fishing licenses. “Sayner-Star Lake is a great place for a family fishing getaway,” says Errington. Now that’s one fish story you can count on.

Sayner-Star Lake is rich with history
pend a day experiencing the rich history of the Sayner-Star Lake area. Begin your day at the Vilas Historical Museum, which was founded in August 1959 by Mabel Sayner Dewitt (daughter of Orrin Sayner, for whom the town was named). The museum contains more than 40,000 items portraying the history of Vilas County and the surrounding area, as well as an extraordinary collection of snowmobiles, including the original machine built by Carl Eliason in 1924. A small gift shop features books by local authors and old-fashioned toys. Down the road, you’ll find Eliason Lumber and Hardware, the birthplace of the modern snowmobile and the location of one of the oldest and most unique stores in northern Wisconsin. Check out Eliason’s storefront window display, where you’ll find many antique collectables, including a player piano and snowmobile. Be sure to stop inside to learn more about Sayner’s history.

serves as a gift store and historical museum. The Gallery itself is steeped in history. In 2005, Bill Hintz, a longtime Star Lake resident and owner of Hintz’s North Star Lodge, restored Star Lake’s original 90-year-old, one-room schoolhouse, converting it into to a gallery/gift shop and museum. Meanwhile, Friends of Star Lake replicated the town’s Old Milltown Depot, which is directly adjacent to the Old Schoolhouse Gallery. The group recently relocated the Frederickson House – the Star Lake home of two beloved sisters for nearly 100 years and an original logger’s home – to become part of the historic community park. The Fredrickson house will serve as a museum illustrating Star Lake’s history and will be full of artifacts dating from 1895. The Depot serves as a museum dedicated to Star Lake’s historical logging and railroad days.
Anchoring Star Lake as a base for Northwoods artisans is The Old Schoolhouse Art Gallery, open June through October, Thursday-Saturday, 11am to 4pm.
Just down the road is the picturesque Fredrickson Bait Shop, made from an old boxcar, which rests on the shores of Star Lake, just as it has since the area’s logging days. The bait shop has been an integral part of the Star Lake community and has been painted and photographed by many people over the years.
The Friends of Star Lake – a group dedicated to preserving and restoring historic Star Lake sites – offers its members’ fine art, photography, and other artifacts for sale at the Gallery, which also
End your journey through history at Hintz’s North Star Lodge. The Lodge on Star Lake was built in 1894-95 as a home and retreat for railroad and lumber company officials and guests.

rom jumbo shrimp to heaping ice cream cones to huge, garnish-filled Bloody Marys, Sayner-Star Lake restaurants quench every hunger and thirst.
Good Times
The good times roll year-round in downtown Sayner at the Sayner Pub, a full-service sports bar offering a complete menu of sandwiches, salads, pizzas, and burgers. Established in 1945, the Sayner Pub also offers a full-service bar known for its specialty drinks, including fantastic 22-ounce Bloody Marys that don’t skimp on the garnish. And according to Eric Liebenstein, Sayner Pub owner, the Pub’s pizza put Sayner on the map. “People who come back to the Northwoods every year for vacation say The Pub is the first place they go when they arrive, because they want to order the same pizza they ate here when they were kids,” Liebenstein says. “We haven’t changed the recipe.”

Liebenstein brings in bands every Wednesday night in the summer, and provides several flat-screen televisions to keep sports fans up to date on their favorite teams. And patrons regularly throng the bar and dining rooms during football season. “Sports is No. 1 here, and we never miss a game,” says Liebenstein, who from 1983 to 1987 was a Badgers baseball star. “We have a great time in here,” he adds. “We provide a place where friends can get together, have a good dinner, and then stay around to play a few games of pool or enjoy the entertainment.” Just around the corner, The Hillside Tavern & Grill is another place where patrons can watch a good game in the bar before drifting into the dining room. Proudly serving Vinchi’s famous recipes for thin-crust pizza and ribs, The Hillside Tavern & Grill also offers a complete dinner menu, featuring specials every night. A soup and salad bar come with all dinner orders. Menu items also include specialty sandwiches, such as the 8-ounce Italian Sausage

The Star Lake Store is proud to host Catch-A-Cup, a gourmet coffee service offering espresso, mocha and iced coffee, smoothies, and other creative drinks. Open all summer from 7am-2pm daily, stop in and indulge in a cup of deliciousness while watching the hummingbirds from the feeders outside! Patty Sandwich, the Philly Steak Sandwich, and a huge Meatball Sandwich. Try the Grizzly if you dare! And Hillside’s Friday Night Fish Fry special also offers baked cod. Located at Snowmobile Pit Stop #38, Hillside is open year-round, closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Down the road is Mar-Li’s Bar, which was recommended by Travel Wisconsin in 2017 as one of 10 Northwoods hot spots for fish fry dinner. Also recognized by local Channel 12, Mar-Li’s Fish Fry offers German and American potato salad with haddock on Friday, as well as a Fisherman’s Platter – a mix of deep-fried and baked, lemon-pepper fish. Meanwhile, daily dinner specials also draw the crowds, and the biggest crowd-pleasers are the restaurant’s Broasted Chicken, Bourbon Burger, and Loaded Bomber, a slow-roasted beef sandwich. Drink specials from Mar-Li’s full-service bar, such as a fully dressed, 24-oz Bloody Mary, are also popular favorites at this newly remodeled historic restaurant. Another favorite establishment for foodies is The Corner Store in Sayner, where huge scoops of ice cream, shakes, and sundaes delight parents and children alike. The Corner Store also offers other hot snacks, such as pizza. While the kids are testing their skills in The Corner Store’s Arcade Room, parents can relax around picnic tables outside. And, instead of having to run out of town for milk, bread, and other necessities such as firewood or other camping supplies, customers can stay close to home and purchase groceries and camping and fishing supplies at The Corner Store.
Savory Specialties
Further down the road in Star Lake, homemade is the name of the game at Stillwaters. Chuck and Karen Altamore, owners of Stillwaters, pride themselves on offering traditional Italian family recipes to patrons who travel from miles around to dine at this unique establishment. “One of our regular couples travels all the way from Antigo every other week just to have our Sicilian Walleye,” says Chuck. ”That old family Sicilian recipe is so well-loved, I guarantee that when you google Sicilian Walleye, our name will pop up. Even people who don’t like fish love it.” Other Stillwaters dinner specialties include a 14 oz. Aged Black Angus Ribeye Steak, Friday All-You-Can-Eat Fish Fry, Baked Cold Water Alaska Cod, Homemade Meatloaf, and Chuck’s Homemade Pasta and Meatballs. Stillwaters, located on Star Lake’s Highway K at Snowmobile Pit Stop #35, is open year-round, offers carry-out orders, and features outdoor dining in the summer.

We’ve Got Birkie Fever! CABLE TO HAYWARD – An estimated 40,000 skiers and spectators will gather in Hayward and Cable in February to celebrate the North America’s largest ski race: the Slumberland American Birkebeiner. The Skate 50K and Classic 55K will take over the streets and trails on Saturday, February 22, 2020. The Kortelopet Classic and Skate 29K takes place Friday, February 21. The shorter, exciting Prince Haakon, bringing skiers 15 kilometers of fun on the Birkie trail, is also slated for Friday, February 21. Skiers, whether elite or amateur, count on spectators to cheer them on as they set their sights on the finish line. Just when they think they’re fading, spectators provide an exciting buzz that helps skiers transcend their fatigue and push toward the finish. Watch, cheer, and ring cowbells for skiers.
Feb/Mar/Apr 2020 | UpNorthAction.com
The Slumberland American Birkebeiner will begin at the American Birkebeiner Trailhead near Cable. Skiers will traverse the legendary Birkie Trail toward the finish line on Hayward’s snow-covered Main Street. If you’re looking for a great spectator event for all ages, watch the crème de la crème of cross-county skiing go head-to-head in whip-fast sprint competition. Whether a skier or spectator, this is an electric, inspiring event you will never forget. Visit Birkie.com to learn more.

Pasties: Some Questions Answered WAKEFIELD – If you’ve taken a drive along Highway 2 in or near the Upper Peninsula, you’ve likely seen signs boldly notifying you PASTIES SOLD HERE, but unless you’re a local resident, that probably has raised some questions for you.
Western U.P. Region
How do you say it? First things first. It’s important to learn how to pronounce it, lest someone thinks you’re talking about a completely different kind of pasty. So repeat after us. Past. E. The first syllable has a short a, as in past, present, future.
52
So what actually is a pasty? Traditionally, pasties consist of beef and potatoes, lightly seasoned and enclosed in a baked pastry. Miners from Cornwall, England, who settled in the U.P. in the 1800s brought this utilitarian meal with them for sustenance on long workdays in the mines. Various ethnic groups who settled in the area (particularly Finnish miners) adopted the pasty and put their own characteristic spin (such as subbing in rutabagas for potatoes). So what’s so appealing about the pasty? In today’s world of avocado toast and unicorn kale harvest bowls, what place does the pasty hold? It might be the no-nonsense quality of the meal that echoes the simple grit and humility of U.P. dwellers. Perhaps the appreciation of something so regionally and culturally specific culls a cult following. If you’re curious what makes the pasty so enduringly popular, we think you better head up to our region and taste a pasty for yourself.
Feb/Mar/Apr 2020 | UpNorthAction.com
Where do you get a pasty? If you are traveling through the western U.P., you need to fuel up before the adventure that awaits you. Whether snowmobiling, skiing, snowshoeing, or ice fishing is next on your agenda, you’ll need the portable sustenance that a pasty provides. So head to Randall Bakery in Wakefield before you get out on the ice or snow. Randall Bakery sells these pasty varieties: • Traditional pasties, featuring a beef–pork mix, potato, and onion • Cornish pasties, beef–pork mix, potato, rutabaga, carrot, and onion • Jalapeno pasties, like a traditional pasty with jalapeno peppers added • Veggie pasties, like a Cornish pasty without the meat; this is vegetarian-friendly but not vegan-friendly • Breakfast pasties, with potato, pork sausage, egg, bacon, and cheese Traditional pasties are served hot daily at Randall Bakery from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. For a great lunch option, Cornish pasties are offered hot every Thursday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. You can also pick up a frozen pasty and bake it back at the cabin. (Randall Bakery is located at 505 Sunday Lake Street in Wakefield.) It’s no question: you should try a pasty. The only questions that remain are which pasty variety you’ll try first and (more controversially) which is your condiment of choice: ketchup or gravy?

Better Than Buzzworthy: Find a Fresh Take on the Mocktail Trend in Crystal Falls CRYSTAL FALLS – Across the nation, mocktails are having a moment. In fact, according to recent studies, about one-quarter of adults are aiming to reduce their alcohol consumption. Reasons for cutting back are as varied and complex as the individuals who make the choice to do so. In addition to promoting the health and well-being of the folks who are staying sober, the mocktail movement highlights the refreshing truth that the best beverages gives us so much more to enjoy than a fleeting buzz.
Eastern U.P. Region
Whether it’s part of your New Year’s resolution for a healthier 2020, an extended Dry January after an especially indulgent holiday, a lifelong commitment, or just a curious foray into the world of alcohol-free beverages, Curious Pig, in Crystal Falls, Michigan, has a Sparkling Mocktail list that is worth paying attention to. Made with herbs picked right from the garden on the restaurant’s deck, you can’t go wrong with any of these delicious options:
54
• • • • • • • • • •
Blush Crush: watermelon juice, mint, lime juice, ginger beer Apple Lagoon: apple and kale puree, Fuji apple sparkling water Spearmint Snake: sweet tea, cucumber, mint Velvet Jam: blackberry puree, cucumber, lime juice, balsamic vinegar, club soda, sprite Wicked Berry Smash: blueberry and beet puree, blackberry ginger ale Brilliant Infusion: blueberry and beet puree, black cherry sparkling water Ale Squeeze: apple and kale puree, ginger beer Citrus Howler: citrus, mango, and carrot puree; ginger ale Orange Blossom Stinger: citrus, mango, and carrot puree; orange juice; ginger beer Sangria: white grape juice, cranberry juice, lemon-lime soda, fruit
What elevates these beverages to another level is just how fresh and pure they taste. They are pureed in-house and handled with care as the seeds are strained out. And no sugar is added to the purees, so you can feel good about enjoying the mocktail that has caught your fancy. Curious Pig is known for more than just great beverages. As its name implies, its barbeque is what put it on the map. Although the restaurant was established only two years ago, it has already received recognition as an “Up & Coming BBQ Restaurant,” praised for its “Best Chili,” “Best Sides,” stylish interior, cozy atmosphere, and more. So let’s raise a glass (we’ll have the Orange Blossom Stinger, please) to the success of Curious Pig and to growing, healthy trend of inspiring, alcohol-free beverages. Cheers! Curious Pig is located at 1117 S 5th Street in Crystal Falls, Michigan, just five blocks away from the snowmobile trail. So make a trip out to Curious Pig while the snow’s still flying, and then come back again in the summertime and enjoy your mocktail and barbeque from the gorgeous deck.
