Wisconsin s Last Wilderness

¬

Presque Isle, a place in Wisconsin’s famed Northwoods, is a vast swath of forest and glacial lake country that deserves to be named Wisconsin’s Last Wilderness. It is the location of a quaint town in the famous lake country of Vilas County, offering 77 square miles of pine and hardwood forests, lakes and streams; a four season vacation land that only just begins to tell the story. It is immediately adjacent to Michigan’s sprawling Ottawa National Forest and Wisconsin’s 200,000 plus acres of Northern Highland State Forest - offering hundreds of lakes and countless miles of scenic Northwoods back roads.

The top attraction, however, is the natural splendor of Northwoods forests and clear pristine lakes that offer a world of relaxation for all, from the contemplative sports hiking, photography, canoeing, kayaking, bicycling - to the world of casual or serious trophy fishing, boating and waterskiing. Our glacial hills and clear waters will make you an enthusiastic “discoverer” of Wisconsin’s Last Wilderness. Wildlife abounds - eagles, loons, songbirds to whitetail deer grazing along the roadsides. If you’re lucky, you might see a black bear lumbering along.

Lake Superior, the Porcupine Mountains, canoe country of the Sylvania Wilderness Tract are a short drive away. Presque Isle is in the center of Wisconsin’s famed Lakeland area. Arts and crafts shops, family fun theme attractions, historical museums and wildlife exhibits are minutes away. Golfing, tennis and horseback riding facilities add to your choices.

Whatever your vacation dreams, make them a reality by coming home to Presque Isle.

Village History

What is in a name?

Nearly 300 years ago, shipwrecked French priests on the shores of Lake Superior made their way down a river to an area they christened “Presque Isle,” or “Almost an Island,” because of the vast stretches of lakes and rivers that dwarfed the land. The advent of the logging era brought development in the early 1900’s. In 1905, Presque Isle was known as Fosterville, after one J.J. Foster who built and operated a large saw mill. William S. Winegar bought the mill in 1910 and the fledgling community was renamed “Winegar.” When the mill closed in 1933, the great “Lumber Baron” era came to an end. Today the mill ponds are visible from the village and make up our flagship park: Pipke Park. In l955, the village name was changed once again. Reflecting the wisdom and farsightedness of early French missionary priests, we finally became... “Presque Isle” – Almost an Island. A visit to the Heritage Society Museum in downtown Presque Isle will take you back to these simpler times. In recognition of Presque Isle’s rich history and logging era heritage, the Town of Presque Isle adopted a new lumberjack logo that also retains the “Wisconsin’s Last Wilderness” moniker as an honor to the natural assets we are blessed with. The Presque Isle Chamber of Commerce hosts its annual Presque Isle Days in mid-summer, with highlights including old-time games for kids and adults, plenty of food and Wisconsin brews.

The Great Outdoors

WINTERS are wonderfully long in Presque Isle due to its proximity to Lake Superior and receiving “lake effect” snow. Because of this, its snow-covered winters begin early and end late. With Presque Isle at the hub of a major snowmobile system, a visitor can spend a week and ride a different trail each day. The breathtaking beauty will leave you in awe as you travel the area’s nearly 500 miles of groomed trails winding through rambling forests and over hilly country. These trails frequently lead you to woodland rivers where the flowing water remains open throughout most of the winter. Small bridges breach the snow-covered banks, lending access to other beautiful portions of the Presque Isle vacationland. The local Sno-Bunnies Snowmobile Club does an excellent job of keeping the trails groomed, marked and maintained with their 2007 Tucker Terra and new Tractor with a Sorcy Track System. Snowmobile enthusiasts agree, Wisconsin’s Last Wilderness provides endless riding opportunities with something to please every snowmobiler.

This site houses 400-year old white pines, spring-fed ponds, and wild lakes and streams. Access to the Nature Conservancy’s Tenderfoot hiking is by water from the Palmer Lake boat landing, located in-between Presque Isle and Land O’ Lakes. Distance is 3 miles one way. Maps available at the Chamber. Wolf Mountain Overlook: Drive north into the Ottawa National Forest to find a short but relatively steep wilderness trail through lush northern hardwood. The lookout has multiple spots to enjoy the view. Drive Hwy. 2 west from Marenisco until you reach FS Road 9300, approximately five miles. Turn right and travel the forest road for three miles to reach the hiking sign and parking lot on the right-hand side.

Things To Do

Paddling:

Geocaching:

Biking: Northern Wisconsin is fast becoming a biking mecca due to its diverse trails, scenic routes, and friendly hospitality.

Mountain Biking:

Take your pick... from intimate river paddles to lake paddles. Choose your boat... kayak, canoe, paddleboard, or pedal paddleboard. Our name in French means “Almost An Island” which means water everywhere! Stop by the Chamber office for a copy of our new Canoe Trails map, which identifies a dozen trips, from two to six hours in length and at varying degrees of difficulty.

• Border Trails System: Cyclists will find 100 miles of paved backroad trails that provide exceptional scenery and sense of quiet. Located along the Wisconsin border, the system runs into Michigan through some of the most beautiful, rolling lake country the region has to offer. Parking available at the Presque Isle Community Center. • Heart of Vilas County: Choose from 60 miles of connected trails in Vilas and Iron Counties. The trail is fully paved, primarily off-road and appropriate for all types of bicycles. Stopover spots along the way include ice cream parlors, beaches, scenic bridges and picnic tables. • Presque Isle Road Trail: Start in downtown Presque Isle and follow the road route and easy off-road sections as you loop around ponds, take in quiet back roads, and enjoy a nice out and back ride, with areas to stop and enjoy a swim or picnic.

Did you know our town was once named “Winegar”? We have combined technology with historical facts, introducing visitors to the treasure hunt known as “Geocaching”. This activity allows people to get outside and enjoy nature while utilizing e-devices. This spring, a series of geocaches will be placed throughout the township; highlighting some of the people, places, and events that helped shape our village, from the logging days of the 20’s, through the tourist boom of the 60’s, and beyond. Geocaching.com. The WinMan Trails are a network of silent sport trails in neighboring Winchester. Spanning 1300 acres of private land and public Northern Highlands State Forest recreation land, over 5 miles of purpose-built single track trails and terrain offer excellent opportunities for mountain biking and fat biking. A new chalet, instructional and social activities, and a top-notch trail system that caters to beginners and experienced riders make this a destination not to be missed. WinmanTrails.com

Star Gazing:

Dark skies are essential for getting clear views of the night sky, the Milky Way and even the aurora borealis (aka northern lights). Known as “Wisconsin’s Last Wilderness,” Presque Isle has few streetlights and quiet, spreadout homes and resorts, ideal for night sky viewing. Much of the sky’s treasures are visible with the naked eye, or bring a set of binoculars or your telescope for enhanced viewing.

Snowmobiling: The region offers hundreds of miles of trails meandering through vast stretches of pine and hardwood forests, and around numerous lakes. We are blessed by the Lake Superior Snowbelt and see more snow than most other Wisconsin locations. Ride to a new Vilas County or Upper Peninsula destination every day of the week to experience fantastic scenery, hospitable restaurants and taverns, and cozy lodges. Our Sno-Bunnies do a superb job grooming, with frequent endorsements as “the best trails in the region.” MidwestSnowmobiling.com

Birding:

Presque Isle, a Wisconsin Bird City, is a great location for backyard birds as well as those in woods and waters habitats. Join an informed, fun group in the Discovery Center Bird Club. They plan weekly and seasonal outings, and visit Presque Isle’s Pipke Park, Van Vliet Hemlocks, and Catherine Wolter Wilderness Area; and kayak the Presque Isle River and Rice Creek Natural Area.
