Our History RHINELANDER’S RICH HISTORY AND THE LEGEND OF THE HODAG By: Kerry Bloedorn, Northwoods Historian Rhinelander, Wisconsin is a city with a rich history! Rhinelander was established in 1882 as a logging and lumber town in the Northwoods of Wisconsin. Its name pays tribute to Frederic W. Rhinelander, an important figure in Wisconsin’s early railroad history. The Hodag is the town’s most unique claim to fame. In 1896, a local prankster named Eugene Shepard claimed to have captured a fearsome, horned beast in the nearby woods. This furry four-legged creature was said to have the head of a frog, face of an elephant, oxen-like horns and sharp fangs for teeth! News of the Hodag spread, and it became a sensation, attracting tourists and curiosity seekers. It was even described in newspapers, leading to stories of its capture and public displays. In reality, the Hodag was a clever hoax created by Shepard, constructed from animal hides and other materials. However, it became Rhinelander’s beloved mascot, and even today, the town embraces it with Hodagthemed events, sculptures, and is featured as the high school mascot. The city of Rhinelander has evolved over the years from its logging industry roots to diversify its economy with tourism, manufacturing, and healthcare. It’s surrounded by natural beauty, with forests, lakes, and outdoor recreation opportunities drawing visitors year-round.
History
The Hodag legend, while a hoax, remains a symbol of Rhinelander’s quirky and playful spirit. The town’s devotion to this mythical creature has made it an enduring part of its identity, with a yearly celebration called the “Hodag Heritage Festival”, the long running “Hodag Country Music Festival”, and Hodag Park, where a Wisconsin Historical Marker commemorates the creature. Rhinelander, Wisconsin has a history deeply intertwined with the legend of the Hodag. The city’s origins in the logging industry have given way to a more diverse and tourism-oriented economy, and the Hodag remains an iconic and whimsical part of its identity, drawing visitors from all over with its legendary charm.

HOLMBOE NATURE PRESERVE
Hidden Gems
Located just minutes from downtown Rhinelander, this state natural area is home to old-growth conifers and lush greenery. This is the perfect spot for a short, secluded walk in town with less than 1 mile of trailbut the scenery won’t disappoint! Explore the trail with views of the Pelican River, picturesque boardwalks, and areas filled with abundant moss and ferns. In the winter, go snowshoeing or enjoy a peaceful winter walk through the woods. You can find the Holmboe Nature Preserve at the south end of the Riverview Hall parking lot, located off of Boyce Drive.

ALMON COUNTY PARK
This quiet County Park is home to a swimming beach and picnic area, nature trails, and an 18-hole disc golf course. This park is located about 5 miles south of Rhinelander off of Highway G on Buck Lake, a quiet 60-acre lake. The nature trails include a bog with a boardwalk, scenic lakeside trails, and old hardwood trees. Enjoy recreational fun all year round here!

THE RIVERWALK
Go on a scenic walk along the Pelican River. The Riverwalk boardwalk can be accessed from the end of the Chamber of Commerce parking lot. Begin your walk on the paved path and take the footpath on your right side, which will lead to the boardwalk. The boardwalk is approximately 150 yards long with a bench and overlook at the end, which is great for fishing or a quiet lunch. Or, continue on the paved path which will connect with sidewalks that cross over the Davenport Street bridge and lead to the downtown area.

ONEIDA COUNTY COURTHOUSE
Often overlooked but full of history, the Courthouse includes a magnificent tiffanystyle glass dome and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Take the self-guided walking tour to learn about the building’s history and see the glass dome from the inside. Take in the unique architecture and be sure to check out the murals on the third floor!

NICOLET COLLEGE LOOP & DR RICHARD NELSON RECREATION TRAILS
Visit the beautiful Nicolet College campus located on the shores of Lake Julia and explore the trails and scenic loop around campus. There are two multi-purpose recreation trails which are open year-round and offer varying levels of difficulty. Explore the wooded areas or enjoy the lakeside views!

Legendary Sights From beautiful lakes and towering trees to activities and community events, there are many memorable sights to see in Rhinelander. Whether you’re a resident or visitor, we encourage you to “live the legend” by taking in these unforgettable sights and creating your own memories while you’re here! Did you know that there are 232 lakes within 15 minutes from Downtown Rhinelander? Watch a colorful sunset at a lake or even watch the 4th of July fireworks from your boat on Boom Lake during the summer. With abundant wildlife and natural beauty, you’re bound to see some wildlife at a local trail system or a nearby lake. Try to spot a loon or watch for eagles flying overhead along the river. Immerse yourself in the woods and observe the variety of trees towering over you and foliage surrounding you. In the fall, go on a scenic drive or paddle to take in the colorful fall landscapes. On a winter day, enjoy watching a quiet, peaceful snowfall.

In the downtown area, marvel at the tiffany-inspired glass dome at the Oneida County Courthouse. Drive by to see the dome lit up at night, or make a stop to see the beautiful details from the inside of the historic building. View historic artifacts, items and more while learning about local history at the Rhinelander Historical Society or Pioneer Park Historical Complex. Year-Round Outdoor Recreation With miles of trails and hundreds of lakes, the opportunities for year-round outdoor recreation are endless in Rhinelander! Whatever your activity of choice may be, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
On Land SPRING, SUMMER, AND FALL The Oneida County Forest land includes over 80,000 acres and features many trails for various activities. Oneida County is also part of the ChequamegonNicolet National Forest, spanning over 1.5 million acres of the Northwoods with 800 miles of trails. Rhinelander is home to several public parks in town, including Hodag Park and Pioneer Park, where you can find excellent walking paths, recreational sport courts, great water views, and sandy beaches. The Northwoods has many trails for ATV/UTVing. Go on a scenic ride on the Enterprise Trail System or the Little Rice Trail. These trails connect to other trail systems in neighboring counties for more miles of fun. Most city streets and county roads in the area are open to ATV and UTV use. Connect with nature by hiking local trail systems. Visit Almon County Park, the Holmboe Nature Preserve, or Washburn Silent Trails for a relaxing hike through the woods, along the river, or around a lake. There are also ample opportunities for biking in the Rhinelander area with options of single and double track trails. You can find trails for mountain biking or road biking, with a variety of trails ranging in distance, paved or unpaved surfaces, and varying difficulty.
Recreation
The abundant public land is also a great place for hunting, whether it be white-tailed deer, turkey, waterfowl, or bear.

WINTER Rhinelander averages 81.6” of snowfall per year. Enjoy the fresh snowfalls by going snowmobiling on more than 1,000 miles of groomed trails in Oneida County. These trails connect with thousands more miles of trails all throughout the Northwoods and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Take in the Northwoods winter landscapes by cross country skiing or snowshoeing through the woods on one of the many groomed trails. On Water With approximately 1,100 lakes in Oneida County, there are never-ending possibilities for fun on the water! Go fishing for trophy fish year-round at one of Rhinelander’s popular lakes, such as Boom Lake, Lake George, or Lake Julia. Choose your perfect fishing spot from a variety of small secluded lakes to extensive flowages where you can find everything from panfish to musky. In the winter months, brave the cold and try your luck at ice fishing. Enjoy the summer relaxing by boating among the picturesque waters. Visit a quiet lake or cruise the sizeable Boom Lake chain. Or, explore the water by paddling the scenic waterways, such as the Pelican or Wisconsin Rivers, or float along a tree-lined lake with friends or family. Whether it be kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, or canoeing, there are plenty of options for paddling fun in Rhinelander. You can also find several excellent swimming beaches in the Rhinelander area to cool off in the summer. Several options include Buck Lake, Hodag Park and Hanson Lake.

Athletics & Sports The YMCA of the Northwoods offers health and fitness opportunities for all ages, including adults. Join a sport league or take a fitness class. Youth can partake in competitive or non-competitive sport leagues, lessons, and camps.
The Hodag Dome is the largest air-supported high school dome in the nation, with over 128,000 square feet of space for use by students, teams, community members, and visitors. At the Dome, you can find a full-size football field and two softball fields, a soccer pitch, community walking space, pickleball/tennis courts, batting cages, golf simulators and other sports courts. Membership is available for community walking hours, open turf times, and leagues at the Dome. The Dome is available for rental and can host a variety of activities and events including tournaments, concerts, meetings, fundraisers and more.
Also located in Rhinelander is the Rhinelander Ice Arena, offering a full-size 82x200 foot NHL hockey rink. The Ice Arena holds numerous events, games and tournaments for both hockey and figure skating during the winter months. Ice-related community events and workshops are also offered.

Rhinelander is home to state-of-the art athletic facilities, silent sport trails, scenic golf courses, and more. Whether you are traveling for sporting events or seeking community activities, Rhinelander’s recreational amenities have lots to offer.

The Hodag Sports Club has two range locations and offers shooting ranges for shotgun, archery, pistol and rifle. With over 1,400 acres between both locations, you can find opportunities for trap and skeet shooting, sporting clays, archery targets, numerous bays and more.
The Sports Club also has several shooting teams and league events throughout the year. Or, play a round of golf at the Northwood Golf Club and take in the beautiful scenery. This 18-hole course has a full clubhouse and holds regular leagues, teaching opportunities, and social events. Don’t forget about the wide variety of outdoor venues and events. Visit groomed trails for cross country skiing, snowshoeing, mountain biking and fat tire biking, hiking and more. From dog sled races to tournaments, you can enjoy outdoor sports year-round.
