You will ride through tall evergreens encased in snow and forests where the sun will shine down on you, eagles will soar above you, and the wildlife will surround you as you make your way through the scenic routes. The Bo-Boen snowmobile club has over 1,100 members, making it the largest snowmobile club in the state. It uses two Tucker Terra Sno-Cats, one New Holland Tractor and Arrowhead Groomers, and Sno*Boss Drags, both of which are manufactured right here in St. Germain. St. Germain has also been recognized as a Snowmobile Friendly Town by the Association of Wisconsin Snowmobile Clubs. For more information and trail conditions, visit www.boboen.com. Roger Klein - President, Bo-Boen Snowmobile Club

St Germain is Bo-Boen Country and is home to Wisconsin’s largest snowmobile club with over 1,100 members. The club was founded in 1969 with the purpose of providing the best and safest snowmobile trails in the state. The club has a team of dedicated groomer drivers that along with the best grooming equipment available, maintain over 100 miles of groomed snowmobile trails. Trail grooming is performed every evening and night during the snow season. Grooming at night is not only safer for everyone but allows the newly groomed trails to firm up for the best day time riding experience. St Germain is recognized as a Snowmobile Friendly Town and the Bo-Boen Snowmobile Club is proud to have the support of the entire community. Everything you need for a great snowmobile experience is available right on the trails in St Germain. The club offers a Snowmobile Safety Class in December each year to educate and promote safe snowmobiling for everyone. SUMMER RIDING ADVENTURES Gary Penner - President, St. Germain ATV Club

Families and friends are discovering the natural beauty of the Northwoods as they ride an all-terrain vehicle or utility task vehicle/side-by-side (ATV/UTV) on trails in and around St. Germain. Whether you’ve ridden a four-wheeler before or this is your first time, it is our goal that you will want to come back again and again. There are over 150 miles of signed ATV/UTV routes and trails in the St. Germain area! The St. Germain ATV/UTV trail system connects to several other trail systems in the area (Landover, Lakeland, Lake Tomahawk, Presque Isle and more) and traverses public and private land. In 2023 a tractor and grooming equipment were purchased to better maintain our trails during the riding season. The trails open on or after May 1, depending on weather and trail conditions, and close on October 31 giving riders ample opportunity to explore the trails, stop for a bite to eat and explore the local beauty of the area including lakes and streams. One of the best ways to learn the trails is to join the St. Germain ATV Club. The Club has 288 general members and 88 business members. Our mission is to build and maintain all trails in the Club area while also promoting the safety and respect of those trails and the sport of ATV/UTVing. The Club has several events during the year ranging from Club rides and picnics to the annual Fall Fest which is comprised of a scavenger hunt, ATV/UTV games, prizes, food and fun! Non-members are always welcome to join any event the Club sponsors. To join the St. Germain ATV Club, simply visit www.stgatvclub.org and click on “Join Our Club”. The Club also has a robust Facebook page “St. Germain ATV Club” where you can check out activities and informational postings. So, gear up, grab a trail map at the Chamber of Commerce or any of our local businesses in St. Germain and enjoy a day of riding!

SILENT TRAILS

St. Germain Trails Offer Serenity, Easy Access St. Germain is where you will find towering pines and mature hardwoods caressing our silent sport trails, which lead bikers and hikers past lakes and streams that dot the area. Some are paved bike trails that weave and bob their way through the forest and along lightly-traveled backroads, all leading riders to one delight after another. Others are lightly-contoured forest paths, favored by backpackers who might pause in bemusement as a red squirrel or blue jay scolds their presence. To those just leaving the fast lane, take a deep breath of air; let it out slowly; and take another. No one is in a hurry here, and no one needs to be! Now that we have you primed with fresh, clean air, let’s tackle the trails. (Learn more about the following trails by going to www.stgermainsilenttrails.org.)

HEART OF VILAS COUNTY

12

The Heart of Vilas County Bike Trail offers riders more than 52 miles of paved trails that connects St. Germain with Sayner, Boulder Junction, Manitowish Waters and Mercer. This spectacular trail, recognized as a National Recreation Trail in 2020, winds through the Northern Highland-American Legion Forest and along crystal clear lakes and rivers. Just over 13 miles of it runs through the Town of St. Germain.

Two segments run through St. Germain. The first segment connects the South Bay trail lot (Highway O) to the St. Germain Chamber of Commerce. This 5.5mile trail is ideal for beginners because of its flat terrain. The second segment also begins at the St. Germain Chamber of Commerce and heads west and then north into Sayner. This 8.5-mile-long trail is filled with rolling terrain, some steep hills and chances to see wildlife.

The trail system features smooth pavement suitable for all types of riders -- from flat-to-rolling terrain, manageable hills, and multiple scenic bridges. Along the trail are many scenic rest areas with picnic spots and restrooms. You will also find swimming spots for a quick cool down in the summer months, and walking trails if you want a break from two wheels. There are 20 different parking areas to choose where to start your ride.

That trailhead at the Chamber office includes a picnic table where you can rest and eat lunch. Of course, feel free to come inside the center for maps, brochures and advice from the chamber staff.

There are several campgrounds along the trail, as well as many motels and resorts on or easily accessible to the trail. From the Heart of Vilas Bike Trail, you can ride right up to a restaurant for a great meal or a quick snack.

You’re forgiven if, after a ride on this outstanding trail, you refer to it as “Awesome Trail.” The Awassa Nature Preserve trail bends its way through 230 acres of old-growth forest for some five miles. You can choose any or all of the four trail loops. Notably, this relatively flat, shaded trail is wheelchair accessible. It’s also a local favorite for walking, snowshoeing and Nordic skiing. Portions are open to fat tire bikers during winter. During February’s candlelight event, hundreds of ice luminaries light the entire 1.4-mile loop for skiers, snowshoers and fat tire bikers. There is a woodland bonfire and hot chocolate to help you warm up following your trek.

SILENT TRAILS

THE AWASSA TRAIL

Serenity is what you will feel when you pause along the trail to drink in the atmosphere. The woods are home to several warbler species. Listen for them as you hike, especially in the early morning and evening hours. There are benches for quiet reflection, or for reading a book. Bring your young children who will delight in looking for the next pages highlighted on the story hike.

FERN RIDGE TRAIL This trail can be found just outside of St. Germain, with a new trailhead on Forest Lane. Fern Ridge has been flying under the radar for most outdoor enthusiasts, but now we think this 1.4-mile trail is finally getting its rightful recognition. Those in the know come to it for hiking and in the winter, snowshoeing. There are a number of benches when it’s time for a rest. We’re excited to announce the recently developed 4 miles of mountain biking trails are now open at the Fern Ridge Recreation Area. These fast, flow type singletrack mountain bike trails have been professionally built and signed. Fern Ridge is located at 2005 Forest Ln., just north of St. Germain.

SHANNON LAKE TRAIL Shannon Trail System is located 5-10 minutes northeast of St. Germain. This trail system provides a beautiful outdoor experience to its visitors. The terrain around Shannon Lake features gently rolling hills and a large variety of different tree types that provide a pleasing environment to hike, bike, snowshoe or ski. There are four loops that make up the trail system with the especially scenic green loop surrounding Shannon Lake being a visitor favorite. Each loop ranges in length from 1.9 (yellow), 2.1 (green), 4.7 (blue) & 6.5 miles (red). The trails are open to mountain biking and hiking in the summer and fat tire biking, un-groomed skiing, and snowshoeing in the winter. There are two parking locations. One is located off Highway G approximately 2 miles east of Highway N between Sayner and Eagle River and the other is located off Found Lake Road near St. Germain. The parking area off Shannon Lake Road provides the shortest access point for the green loop.

a family barbeque. They can be seen drinking water in a lake where there are nearby boats. Whitetail deer may maintain a cautious distance, but their ability to co-exist with people has allowed them to flourish in St. Germain.

St. Germain has been a vacation destination for over a century. Its visitors come here for a multitude of reasons, to get away from the bustle of the city, to enjoy the peace of the woods and lakes, and to spend time with family. There are many tourist attractions, events and activities that keep people coming back year after year. One mainstay of this area is the abundant wildlife throughout our forests. Many majestic species of birds, adorable critters such as squirrels and chipmunks, and playful water animals including muskrats, beavers, and otters provide entertainment. Yet with all this wildlife, few animals provide such compelling moments to visitors of St. Germain as the whitetail deer. St. Germain’s layout is ideal for seeing deer. Deer are very social creatures, and because there is plenty of this species’ natural habitat surrounding the area’s homes, resorts, and other businesses, visitors can have up-close encounters with deer on nearly any given day in St. Germain. Whitetail deer are prey animals with their natural predators being coyotes and wolves. These predators do not enjoy human interaction and lurk in the remote areas away from St. Germain’s visitors, and as a result deer move closer to the areas with a higher concentration of people. Deer have no problem walking through yards, feeding in open grassy areas, and being near people doing everyday things. Deer are familiar with people and their ability to adapt to human interaction has provided them a form of protection from some of the frightening predators that can be found deeper in the woods. Deer will share a fairway at the golf course. They will feed in the yard during

One amazing miracle of nature is the Albino Whitetail Deer. Although rare, these unique deer can be seen in the St. Germain area. Albino deer have a rare recessive gene that produces offspring which display albinism which includes a snow white coat, a pink nose and pink eyes. Consequently you may find only one albino deer in a herd of several thousand. But, because this gene can be passed down, the likelihood of finding more albino deer is better in an area where another albino lives. The history of albino deer in the St. Germain area goes back several decades and some of these magnificent white animals wander the woods today. Because they stand out with their brilliant white coats, albino whitetails cannot hide like their brown brethren, yet these unique animals have found a perfect home in St. Germain amongst the residents and visitors. Unfortunately, because whitetails interact so well with humans, they display little fear when it comes to crossing highways and busy roads. Extra care should be taken when driving during low light periods as deer tend to move more at night, especially during the fall months. During the winter months many deer use the Bo-Boen trail system to move through the woods as the packed down trails provide easier passage when late winter snows make travel difficult. So be sure to keep an eye out for the deer when enjoying our snowmobile trail system. Next time you are visiting the St. Germain area, have your phone ready to snap a picture of these beautiful and photogenic creatures. You may even be lucky enough to capture a photo of an awe-inspiring albino for your St. Germain Vacation Album.

WILDLIFE - EAGLES

The

Written By Ken Jackson

It’s commonly known that northern Wisconsin is home to hundreds of species of wildlife. While visitors love to capture pictures of deer, chipmunks, and other inhabitants of the St. Germain area, no species is more sought after and more highly regarded than the North American Bald Eagle. Wildlife researchers have identified the region of Vilas and Oneida Counties as having the heaviest density of nesting eagles anywhere in North America. Vast opportunities to see eagles interacting with each other and witness their hunting activities is a treat that provides memories that few other places can offer. What makes the St. Germain area so inviting to eagles? It’s the habitat. Eagles love to sit and nest in the tallest of trees. Our area has a heavy concentration of old white pine trees. Many of these old pines exceed 120 years of age and reach heights of over 100 feet. The placement of these majestic trees on the shorelines of our lakes gives the eagles their observation platforms to utilize their incredible eyesight. Their eyesight is estimated to be 8 times more powerful than humans. Due to this unbelievable ability, it is said that eagles can spot something as small as a rabbit at a distance of two miles. This allows eagles to swoop down from the tallest of tree tops and capture their next meal.

The other environmental attribute that makes St. Germain special for this majestic bird is the vast amount of surface water in the town. St. Germain is centered in one of the heaviest concentrations of freshwater lakes in the world. Besides the larger lakes, many feeder streams that serve as inlets and outlets of the various lakes remain open year-round, providing more hunting opportunities for eagles when the main bodies of water have iced up for the winter. It is not uncommon to see a group of several eagles together, especially early in summer. They are very social creatures. Eagles like other eagles. When there is enough food to be shared, as many as 20 eagles can be seen along the shore of a lake at a given time. When visiting the St. Germain area, keep in mind that eagles are used to having people around, but they don’t like it when humans get too close. They may be guarding a nest of their young, or they may be hunting. If you see one of these majestic creatures overlooking an area lake from a treetop, remain quiet, enjoy the peace and serenity of the northwoods and know that you are seeing the best that nature has to offer.

FISH

Know your

MUSKY

The king of freshwater fish. They are the top predator and least populated fish in our lakes. Catch and release is the common practice these days. It’s known as the fish of 10,000 casts, but hiring a guide will cut those odds .

NORTHERN PIKE

Wisconsin’s second largest predator fish, second only to their relative the musky. Pike are typically very aggressive and will feed anytime the opportunity allows. They prefer weed flats and other ambush points.

WALLEYE

The walleye is the largest member of the perch family and is often targeted for its table fare. Walleyes can be tough to find, but when they are located, they typically cooperate and bite. Bait secret: minnows, nightcrawlers and leeches, and back to minnows as the season starts and finishes.

PERCH

A small fish that most anglers seek more for the taste than the tug. Adults average 7 to 10 inches which make it a good fish for all ages to catch. Perch have a tendency to congregate in large schools making it a one-stop spot to catch your dinner.

BASS

Large and smallmouth bass are brothers, but like family they do take separate paths. We have several small backwoods lakes that offer untapped largemouth fishing, and several area lakes that offer numbers to trophy fishing for smallmouth. NOTE: the season for smallmouth isn’t open to harvest until the 3rd Saturday of June. Regulations for harvest of largemouth are different from lake to lake.

PANFISH

These fish are probably one of the most popular sport and eating fish in Wisconsin. Crappies, bluegills, and sunfish are our most common “panfish”. Probably the most targeted fish in the spring, and often over harvested. Remember to take only enough for a meal and leave some for another day.

Fishing Trip

to Remember Written By Ken Jackson

Outdoor recreational activities in St. Germain are abundant. One such activity that has been going on for over a century is fishing. Early fishing trips were first made by groups of men, traveling primarily by train, from the population centers of Chicago, St. Louis and Milwaukee. Today, visitors of all ages and many more locations spend hours in the boat fishing for everything from plentiful bluegills to the elusive muskellunge. Fishing can be a wonderful family adventure with adequate preparation. Young children will become bored on the pier or in the boat if there is no action, so target species that will provide frequent nibbles, good action and hold the attention span of a novice. Panfish such as perch, bluegill, and crappie are excellent choices as they are often voracious feeders and the action can provide memorable fun for youngsters. Once the younger and more novice anglers have gotten some experience, bass, walleye and northern pike can be targeted. These fish are more admirable in size, but typically there can be a longer time between bites. By moving up the food chain, you are sacrificing more action for a larger and more impressive catch. When outfitting a novice angler for a trip, don’t skimp on equipment and purchase the cheapest rod and reel available. Think of fishing gear as an investment. Nothing can sour a young angler more than not being able to catch fish because the gear isn’t up to the task and breaks in half when a fish hits. Buy quality equipment and keep the reel spooled with fresh, highquality line. Old or cheap line can cost you a nice catch and leave a hook in a fish that will suffer long term effects. Taking care of fish you plan to release is an important part of being a responsible angler.

Making memories in the boat during a family fishing outing is not difficult if you plan ahead. Being prepared for weather conditions is important. Sunscreen, beverages to stay hydrated, and a batch of snacks can keep you on the water for a longer duration as well as keep everyone comfortable. Be sure to frequently check your favorite weather app and make sure you are aware of any changing weather conditions Be on top of approaching bad weather or changes in wind direction as they can alter the course of your plans for the day. Those visitors to St. Germain that enjoy fishing success typically spend time getting to know as much as possible about the lake and its species before they arrive. Many fishermen who are well prepared target specific species with precise and distinct tactics ensuring their productivity. The more you can learn about a lake and the species it produces the better. Knowledge will give you a leg up on your outing before you throw your first cast. Some visitors to the St. Germain area may secure the services of a guide to learn a particular lake or a specific fishing tactic. If you do hire a guide, talk to them ahead of time and let them know what species you would like to fish for or which lake you would like to learn about. Keep in mind that your flexibility may be necessary if weather conditions change or it’s the wrong time of year for a given species. Guides will always do their best to teach and make your trip as memorable as possible.

Old Fashioned Written By Ken Jackson

When visitors come north, there are usually a series of rituals and traditions that people love to engage in. They love to decompress and slip out of their fast-paced lives back home and take part in the relaxation of the north. Certain locations along with special foods and drinks help these folks make the transition from working life to vacation mode. Northwoods visitors routinely enjoy unique cocktails that help create that northwoods vibe. While many different elixirs appeal to the masses, one in particular proves to be the favorite. One that awakens the pallet. a cocktail that is so unique in that it can be mixed many different ways and with a variety of ingredients. Some folks mix them with their own personal touch and the recipe is kept under lock and key. We are taking about the Old Fashioned.

some arduous and strenuous experimentation, this cocktail was given new life. Since then, brandy has reigned over whiskey by a somewhat significant margin when comparing the numbers in St. Germain area supper clubs.

This highly sought-after drink can be made with a variety of ingredients. Some folks love the smoothness of a blended whisky, others enjoy the smokiness of a southern bourbon. Many however, love the fruity flavor of brandy. In truth, brandy was not introduced to the Midwest until the Chicago World’s Fair of 1893. Germans immigrants discovered this French based mix and brought some back to their new home in Milwaukee. There they began making brandy old fashioneds. After what must have been

So, the next time you stroll into a St. Germain area establishment on a Friday night before enjoying a fish fry, ask your mixologist for an old fashioned and prepare to have your taste buds awakened. It’s a wonderful way to shift gears and settle into an evening out. Keep in mind this tasty concoction can also be enjoyed as an after-dinner drink if you so desire. Just know that this is a time-tested tradition and once you determine your particular old fashioned variety, you will feel like you’re in St. Germain after the first sip.

The basics are bitters, sugar, a mixer of either sweet or sour and then a brandy or a whiskey to breathe life into the cocktail. Some St. Germain based chemists have been known to dabble in various ways of enhancing flavor, adding cinnamon in some form, and even creating ice cubes infused with maple syrup to give the sweetness a unique twist. Most of these bartenders employ an important tool, a muddler, to properly mix the magic and create a frothy foam, the ”fog” that fills the glass before the ice is added.
