Editors Column Find your place in the Northwoods

This is your summer – Up North. Make the most of it! We have thousands of lakes, zillions of trees, plenty of fun activities from mud bog runs to county fairs, few traffic lights (some places, none!), an abundance of hospitality and great lodging places. Commute is a word seldom heard in the Northwoods, and office politics, traffic jams and towering buildings that block the sun are as foreign here as little green men from Mars. If you’re buried in paperwork, trade it for being buried in beach sand by the kids.

mini-golf. Camp under the stars (look for a shooting star and wish for another few Dean S. Acheson days on your vacation!). Swim, boat, fish, snorkel or scuba dive in our clear lakes. Go horseback riding on trails that weave through the forest. Or, thrill to a zip line ride. Visit the art galleries for a gift for yourself or a loved one.

The Northwoods boast dozens of golf courses that are challenging and forgiving at the same time. Kids will have a blast at the wildlife parks, petting zoos and wildlife rehab centers that you will encounter on your travels here. If you believe fine dining is a destination in itself, you are in good company. Seafood and steaks rub shoulders with unique dishes prepared by skilled chefs.

If you want something a bit more organized, Action magazine has a calendar of events that can guide you to the major events of the seasons. Take in a pow wow, cheer on the runners or bikers at the race, or go for a guided nature walk. For an even closer look at the fun events, turn to UpNorthAction.com, which has a very, very large and comprehensive list of events ranging from ice cream socials to the larger events that draws thousands of fans.

Apostle Islands Inline Marathon – where the wheels run wild

MADELINE ISLAND -- The Apostle Islands Inline Marathon scheduled for Saturday, June 14 has a great course and the location is one-of-a-kind, located on the scenic Madeline Island, one of the Apostle Islands in northwest Wisconsin. Choose either a full inline marathon, or the “ALMT” (a little more than) a half marathon or the Mad Fun Skate -- something for every inline skating enthusiast. The course will easily accommodate skaters of all skill levels. The 8.7-mile looped course features a combination of flats, curves, straight-aways and two hairpin turns. Not too much to worry about when it comes to bumps, cracks or potholes. Just a few years ago (2009), much of the course received new blacktop. You can lift your head and enjoy the scenic woodlands and breathtaking view of Lake Superior. Registration and packet pick-up will be 3-9pm Friday at the Ashland Armory. Then on Saturday morning, from 6-7:15am, is the late packet pick-up at the Madeline Island ferry visitor center. (There is no race day registration.) The ferry departures begin at 7am. The races start at 8:30am. The awards ceremony will be at 11am with post race party at the Madeline Island Community Center. For more information on the race, visit apostleislandsinline. com. Questions on ferry tickets? Call the Ashland Chamber at 715-682-2500.

Explore the Chequamegon Bay area during Birding & Nature Festival

ASHLAND – The eighth annual Chequamegon Bay Birding & Nature Festival is a weekend of birding and nature activities on Wisconsin’s south shore of Lake Superior at the peak of spring migration. This year’s fest will be Thursday through Saturday, May 15-17. With over 110 activities to choose from, birders and nature lovers of all skills and ages will find a wealth of choices at this year’s festival. Some of the highlights: Penokee day trips, sustainable agriculture tour, woodworking for wildlife, birding by bicycle, hiking the Lincoln Community Forest, our Wisconsin elk, canoeing Bark Bay slough and much more. Naturalists and other experts will lead tours and conduct sessions. Except for Penokee day trips, all start and end times include round-trip traveling time from the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center (NGLVC), which serves as the base camp for most activities. Each of the off-site land and water activities will have a group departing from NGLVC. However, some activities located in communities around the bay will also have a local meeting point and time listed in their descriptions so you can start at that site for your convenience. You should note that Friday, May 16, includes two significant changes in program design from previous years, including a slate of field trips focusing on the Penokee Range, and an afternoon of indoor concurrent presentations and workshops at NGLVC. See the program booklet for more details. Popular sessions fill fast. Registration deadline is May 14. For details, visit birdandnaturefest. com or call 800-284-9484.

Wilderness Water Cat Fun Exciting times on the St. Croix Scenic Riverway

By Mike Kornmann Some of my most memorable family memories are the ones spending time on the St. Croix Scenic Riverway in northwest Wisconsin. One of Wisconsin’s two national parks, the St. Croix and Namekagon Rivers provide a wilderness experience that will inspire you. Whether you’re fishing, kayaking or tubing, your time on the river will create memories and stories your family and friends will never forget.

Last year, a longtime friend of mine and I got together for a day trip on the St. Croix River. We headed out early on a Friday and were targeting smallmouth bass. The St. Croix is famous for its smallies. The fishery has good number of fish of all sizes. Smallies also make for an exciting fight when you get them on your line. Our strategy on this given day was to use leeches on blaze orange jig heads and the reliable Mepps spinner. While my friend had success catching a couple keeper smallies, I stuck with the leeches and jig. Another thing to expect is you just never know what you will catch when on the St. Croix River. On this particular day, I hooked into a large fish. Using an ultralight-spinning rod with 6 lb. test line I knew I couldn’t horse in this fish. My first thought was this was one heck of a walleye! Then, after 20 minutes of working the fish, I got a glance at the fish. A catfish! I had never caught one before and to top it off, it was huge. This “cat” was so big we had to beach it. It measured 27 inches and weighed over nine pounds! Add to that catch a number of smaller smallmouths and a couple of 16-inch “bronze bruisers,” we had ourselves a memorable if not a legendary day. The St. Croix Scenic River way is a wonderful destination for fishing, kayaking, canoeing and tubing. Whichever activity you choose to do with your family and friends, it is sure to be memorable for years to come. I have already told my “big cat” story at least 50 times. We have two more trips planned for 2014. For more information about recreation opportunities on the St. Croix Scenic Riverway, visit burnettcounty.com/saintcroix.

The Lumberjack Steam Train and the Camp 5 Museum LAONA -- Would you like to be able to look through a window to the past and get a glimpse of northern Wisconsin’s rich lumberjack history? You need go no further than the Camp 5 Museum and the Lumberjack Steam Train in Laona, which is celebrating its 45th year of operation. Visitors to the Camp 5 Museum complex arrive at the museum after boarding a vintage railcar pulled by a 1916 logging locomotive called Old 4-Spot. 4-Spot was actually used in the woods by the Connor Lumber and Land Company to bring logs to the sawmill and food and fodder to the men in the camps. A visit to Camp 5 Museum is more than a look at the past. The Green Treasure Forest Tour tells the story of sustained yield logging as practiced today and a pontoon boat trip on the Rat River teaches a lesson in aquatic and wetlands ecology, besides being a scenic ride. Children will enjoy the petting

zoo, and Mom will like a visit to the Cracker Barrel Gift Shop for browsing and satisfying her family’s sweet tooth with delicious fudge and other treats. The museum gives the visitor a look at antique logging equipment and tools along with a great photographic display of old logging scenes, plus an active blacksmith shop. There are special events held at Camp 5 as well. All age groups love the cowboys, who just might rob the train, ride beautiful horses and shoot vintage firearms -- shooting blanks photo by Mike Monte of course! The cowboys will be there on July 12 and the special Lumberjack Show will be featured on July 19. The Camp 5 season starts June 20 and runs through Aug. 23 Camp 5 and the Lumberjack Steam Train are in operation Monday through Saturday in the regular season, rain or shine, with special fall weekends featured on Sept. 20 and 27th, with the Cowboys reappearing on the weekend of Oct. 4. Swim suits, long sleeve shirts to prevent sunburn and tennis shoes for wading the gravel portions are recommended, but dress for the weather. Several experienced whitewater rafting outfitters in the area rent rafts, canoes, and kayaks as well as life jackets and paddles and will provide transportation back to your launch site or vehicle. Local ordinances prohibit glass bottles and beverage cans in rafts. The rafting vendors open May 1 and continue operations to Sept. 30 with varying fees depending on length of trip. Wausau Whitewater Park is home for paddling fun

WAUSAU – The whitewater slalom course in the Wausau Whitewater Park, 200 River Dr., downtown Wausau, draws competitors from around the world for the races on this stretch of the Wisconsin River, but for much of Wisconsin, it’s just a short paddle away to non-competitive recreation also. So come on down to the course to practice your freestyle skills or zip down the river using your slalom skills. Spectators are welcome to watch, admission is free.

Sponsored by the Wausau Whitewater organization, recreation releases occur several times during the summer and early fall. The event is open to the public, but paddlers have to follow a few rules. Helmet, life jacket, boat floatation bags, waiver releases, and buddy system are all required. Cost is $12 per adult per day, $8 for youth. American Canoe Association membership required. Marinette COUNTY Marinette County famous for its waterfalls MARINETTE COUNTY – The Marinette County Waterfalls Tour – a self-guided tour located in the serene, natural setting of the Northwoods – will take you more than day to view all these 14 breathtaking waterfalls. But if you want to take in just a few of the waterfalls and save the others for another day, you’re still in luck. Marinette County Tourism has developed four recommendations for “mini-tours.” (See below.) The 14 major waterfalls are located along the Thunder, Pike, Peshtigo and Menominee Rivers. Half of the waterfalls are located within the Marinette County Parks system, which have amenities such as restrooms, shelters, picnic areas, campgrounds, etc. There is a $3 fee, per vehicle, to enter the parks and that allows access to all Marinette County Parks for that day. You can also purchase an annual parks sticker for $12. Exact change is needed for the self-pay kiosks located at the entrance of each park. The other half of the waterfalls is located in the Marinette County Forest. The Marinette County Waterfalls Tour is a big attraction to both

locals and visitors alike and is becoming increasingly popular. Since Marinette County is the third largest county in Wisconsin, it can be a challenge to view the waterfalls in one day. As an alternative for those seeking a shorter tour, Marinette County Tourism suggests taking in one or more of their four mini-tours: the Enchanted Trails MiniTour, the Hidden Falls Mini-Tour, the Log Jam Legends Mini-Tour or the Rocky Trails Mini-Tour. Some locations provide light to heavy uneven rocky or hilly terrain, while others may provide long or short walks to get to the falls. A legend shows ease or difficulty of each location. Wear good walking shoes, as the trails may be slippery when wet or leaf covered. Here’s a look at the mini-tours encompassing the 14 waterfalls: 1. Enchanted Trails Tour –
Located along Parkway Road and County Highway I, these falls are situated along a truly enchanting and scenic rustic road: 1) Veteran’s Falls at Veteran’s Falls Memorial Park 2) McClintock Rapids at McClintock County Park 3) Strong Falls at Goodman County Park 2. Hidden Falls Tour – This mini-tour features the most falls, but they are fairly close together. The following falls make this tour a “must see.” 4) Carney Rapids in the Marinette County Forest 5) Four Foot Falls in the Marinette County Forest 6) Eighteen Foot Falls in the Marinette County Forest 7) Twelve Foot Falls at Twelve Foot Falls County Park 8) Eight Foot Falls at Twelve Foot Falls County Park 9) Horseshoe Falls 3. Rocky Trails Tour – Named for its dangerous hills and scenic overlooks, this tour is not for the faint of heart! 10) Smalley Falls in the Marinette County Forest 11) Long Slide Falls in the Marinette County Forest 12) Pier’s Gorge in Norway, MI 4. Log Jam Legends Tour -- The legend, as it is told, goes back to the early days of logging in Marinette County. Dave’s Falls was actually named for a logger who died at the site trying to guide lumber to its final destination: 13) Dave’s Falls at Dave’s Falls County Park 14) Bulls Falls in the Marinette County Forest

Don’t miss a great Lumberjack Show this summer WOODRUFF -- Weeks before the official start of summer, Scheer’s Lumberjack Shows begins preparing for the upcoming season. Fred Scheer’s Lumberjack Shows has been entertaining area visitors for 31 years on Woodland Lake, located on Hwy. 57 in downtown Woodruff.

No matter how good a log roller is, he or she will end up in the water eventually. It’s a cold swim those first few shows of the season.

A spin-off of the famous Scheer’s Lumberjack Shows that began in Hayward, the Woodruff show features the same world-class athletes in a performance that is identical to the Hayward venue. Preparing the site for the summer performances involves maintenance to guarantee the safety of performers as well as its guests. The climbing poles that rise 60 feet into the air are inspected and pads at the bottom are secured in place. “When you are climbing that pole at record speed, the last thing you want on your mind is its stability,” states Cassidy Scheer, world champion pole climber. The log dogs on which the lumberjacks stand and swing razor sharp axes in the event called the underhand chop are checked for structural safety. The specially turned cedar logs used for the logrolling and boom-run events are pulled out of storage and replaced if necessary. The gear and equipment used by the lumberjacks are also checked for safety. Steel toed boots, leather leg chaps, climbing belts and gaffes (the spikes on the side of a climber’s shoes) need to be in tip-top shape to protect the performers. The special leather guards that are placed over a portion of saw blades to protect children as they cross cut saw with the lumberjacks during the kid’s matinees are inspected and repaired if necessary. In addition to the lumberjack gear, the show site is prepared for the throng of summer guests that arrive with the warm weather. Bleachers, walkways and the handicap ramp are checked and the landscaping is refreshed. How about all that wood, the logs the lumberjacks saw and chop? Over 20 tons of aspen log are hauled to the site throughout the When a lumberjack is climbing a 60- to 90-foot pole, the last thing he wants to be concerned about is the safety of the pads on the ground where he will end his descent.

summer. Logs need to be uniform in diameter and stripped of bark – the same guidelines adhered to in the actual Lumberjack World Championships. The first show of the season scheduled for school field trips is also open to the public. It’s this show that gets the team’s adrenalin going for the season. The staff is eager to entertain and display the athleticism they’ve worked hard to keep tuned during the winter months. With everything checked out, cleaned up and the staff eager to get another season underway, there is one element of the shows that cannot be controlled. That is the temperature of the water in Woodland Lake. “Logrolling and the boom-run are pretty darn cold events for us those first few shows of the season,” states Sam Fenton, show manager. “That lake doesn’t really warm up until the beginning of July and no matter how good you are at those events, you’re going to end up in the water at some point.”

There are a dozen paddles planned and each with a distinct theme. The first is “Birds of a Feather” on May 3, stretching in length from the start at the Minnesota Interstate Park to its end at Osceola landing. There are full moon and sunrise paddles planned, too. If the paddles fill quickly as expected, there are waiting lists for each. Kayaks and related equipment, including a personal flotation device, will be provided for all the ranger-led programs. A 30-minute paddling instruction and safety session will take place before departure and must be attended by all participants. Participants should have previous paddling experience and must be at least 18 years of age. The cost for each paddle is $35 per person, and space is limited to eight participants. The paddles vary in time from 2.5 to 5 hours. For more information, call (715) 483-3300 or visit scrapaddle.org/ranger-guided-river-paddles/. The more seasoned paddlers – self described river rats – will want to check out the St. Croix paddle, set for June 14-20 and sponsored by the St. Croix River Association. Heritage Days – Get hooked on history

PHILLIPS – The Wisconsin Concrete Park in Phillips invites families to stop by for their annual Heritage Days festival from 10am to 3pm, Saturday, May 17. Admission is free for this event. Enjoy cultural music, singers and dancers, an authentic fur trade reenactors’ camp, including interactive history stations for kids, on-stage performances with five hours of continuous music, and ethnic food booths by area churches. Visitors will see demonstrations of tools, skills and weapons as used by early European settlers, including a working blacksmith shop, as well as games such as tomahawk throwing. There will be vintage musical instrument displays. Bring your favorite family heritage collection to display and share with others in a special section of the park. Learn tips on how to research your family’s heritage at the genealogy booth. The park houses a unique collection of concrete figures created by the late Fred Smith. The folk art, most embedded with glass, depict his vision of the local culture and the world. At first, Smith built bas relief plaques and sculptures; later his work evolved from two dimensional into three-dimensional sculptures and tableaux. His most widely recognized statues include Ben Hur, the Lincolns, Sacagawea and Paul Bunyan. There are also a number of wildlife sculptures. Although winter seemed to have lasted an extra two months this year, planting season is here! The Concrete Park is hosting a plant swap and sale from 1-4pm, Saturday, May 24 inside the Friends of Fred Smith Studio (plants available throughout the summer). They are also hosting a garden trellis workshop, 1-4pm, the same day. Registration is required for the workshop, however. Visit friendsoffredsmith.org or call 715-339-7282. The Concrete Park is located one mile south of Phillips on Hwy. 13.

Tuscobia Trail

Combine your love of ATVing with camping Enhancing the experience of ATVing the Tuscobia State Trail are opportunities to see wildlife along the way and stops at historical sites along the trail. ATVers should be aware that they might share the trail with mountain bikers, hikers and horseback riders, as the Tuscobia is a multi-use trail. ATVers with camping in mind should check out two campgrounds in the area with access to the Tuscobia State Trail.

Ojibwa Park, located along the Chippewa River, offers 16 camper sites (some with electricity), three tent sites, a large stone pavilion, drinking water, pit toilets, several picnic areas, picnic tables, fire rings, a small stream and pond, and an RV dump station. A hiking trail is being developed. All campsites are available on a first-come, first-served basis. To reserve the shelter or for more information, call 715-266-5923. Located just three miles west of Park Falls is the 30-unit Smith Lake County Park & Campground nestled on the shores of the Flambeau River. From here, you can also access the Flambeau River State Forest Trail, Flambeau Trail System & Solberg Trail. Smith Lake Campground accommodates tents, trailers and RVs up to 45 feet. The 300-acre park’s amenities include electricity, picnic tables, fire rings, firewood, open-air shelter with electricity, picnic area, grills, flush toilets and a shower building, faucet and drinking fountain, vaulted toilets, boat landing and dock, shore fishing, sand beach, playground equipment, hiking trail, ATV/UTV ramp and a dump station. There are two canoe-in campsites via the Flambeau River. All campsites are available on a first-come, first-served basis. To reserve the shelter or for more information, call 715-339-6371. Another place for a rest break, play and shop is at the Tuscobia Trailhead County Park in Park Falls. In addition to providing access to the trail, the park has a ramp to unload/load the ATV and ample room to park the “commute” vehicle, even overnight if you wish. A picnic area has tables and grills, open-air shelter with electricity (fee and reservation required, call 715-339-6371), flush toilet, drinking fountain and faucet, playground equipment for youngsters, horseshoe pits and a baseball diamond. A paved pedestrian trail leads to the city, and a mowed nature trail leads to a pond.

Announcers and lumberjacks get the crowd involved in the show by encouraging them to cheer for their team.

HAYWARD -- Fred Scheer can’t help but reflect on the long history of his Lumberjack Shows in Hayward, as he prepares for the upcoming 33rd season. He and his brother Robert created the original show in 1981, incorporating events from the Lumberjack World Championships. More than a demonstration, the show features a competition between two lumberjack teams as they do 10 different events, logrolling, pole climbing and cross-cut saw among them. Cheering the teams on gets the crowd involved in the show which is a key element in family entertainment and a little down home humor keeps everyone chuckling. The original venue for the show in 1981 was Fred and son Cassidy pose after Cassidy wins a small dock on the the ESPN Outdoor Games Competition. Fred has trained numerous lumberjacks to perform shore of Lake Hayward in his show and who have gone on to win behind what was various lumberjack competitions. then called Windmill Square. There the show’s lumberjacks delighted small crowds and soon it became apparent the production needed more space. With encouragement from Tony Wise, the legendary Hayward promoter, Fred and Robert Scheer moved the show to its present location, Lumberjack Village. Fred is now the sole owner of Fred Scheer Lumberjack Shows and the Lumberjack Village. Training young athletes to be lumberjacks is still a fulfilling role for Fred. Through the years many lumberjacks have come, performed and moved on to other careers. Numerous world champion logrollers, pole climbers and boom-runners had their start as apprentices in Fred Scheer’s Lumberjack Show and the cast has always included world champion lumberjacks. A world champion log roller himself, Fred occasionally delights audiences by personally participating in a show. For all the years Scheer’s Lumberjack Shows has been in Hayward, it continues to draw crowds. One might say that a visit to northern Wisconsin isn’t complete without seeing a Scheer’s Lumberjack Show.

Birding Festival to feature keynote speaker, field trips MANITOWISH WATERS -- A summer in the Northwoods just wouldn’t be complete without hearing the beautiful yet haunting yodel of the common loon echoing across the lake on a still evening. This year the 10th annual Northwoods Birding Festival, an event hosted by the North Lakeland Discovery Center in partnership with the Discovery Center Bird Club on Friday and Saturday, May 9-10, will feature this iconic bird with a keynote presentation about loon behavior by ecologist Dr. Jay Mager. Mager, an associate professor of Biological & Allied Health Sciences at Ohio Northern University, is studying the acoustic signals that common loons use to acquire and defend breeding territories. The Birding Festival begins Friday evening at 5pm with a reception and bird photography presentation by North Lakeland Discovery Center’s assistant director, Azael Meza. He will explore the connections between birds, nature photography and conservation, providing inspiring examples from his own bird photos. There is also an owl prowl program and night hike. Saturday will kick off with early morning warbler walks followed by field trips to local birding hotspots guided by naturalist and author John Bates, wildlife researchers Terry Daulton and Jeff Wilson and research professor amber Roth. The day will also include bird-banding demonstrations, Mager’s keynote presentation and concurrent sessions with presentations by experts on bird identification, reducing obstacles to bird migration and rare and threatened Wisconsin bird species. Festival details, schedule and online registration can be found at discoverycenter.net or call (715) 543-2085. Discovery Center is located at 215 County Hwy. W, just off Hwy. 51.

Canoe or kayak to the finish line – and a cure CONOVER – The Callie Rohr Memorial Canoe and Kayak Race reaches a milestone this year, its 10th year -- and you can help fund research toward finding a cure for the brain tumor that claimed the life of a precious child, Callie Rohr, just five days before her 10th birthday. Her parents, Jeff and Marcia Rohr, operate Rohr’s Wilderness Tours (RWT). After their loss, they decided to organize a river outing to raise funds for pediatric brain tumor research. Named after their daughter, the two-day marathon canoe/kayak race takes place on the historic headwaters of the Wisconsin River. This year’s race will be June 14-15. You can paddle a full, half marathon or the shorter “Paddle for a Cure” race. Recreation and stock boat racers will start from the RWT landing at 10am Saturday, stopping halfway at the River Road landing. They will continue the next day to the finish line in Eagle River. Pro racers tackle the entire course on Sunday, leaving from RWT at 7:30am. The “Cure” paddlers start their three-mile route at County G at 10:30am Sunday. All racers will finish at the Eagle River Inn on Sunday. Spectators are welcome to watch the start and finish of the race, as well as at the River Road landing. There will be an auction, music and raffle Saturday night at RWT. The pig roast, raffles and awards ceremony will follow the race conclusion Sunday at Eagle River Inn. Of Marathons & Triathlons MANITOWISH WATERS & EAGLE RIVER – Part of the popularity of athletic events in the Northwoods is the unsurpassed beauty of the routes they follow – through deep pine forests and past crystal clear lakes. Quiet enough you can hear the wind whisper through those pines, along with birds and red squirrels in the trees. We have been to both of the two events below and were impressed on how well they were organized and staffed, too. A few years ago Father Winter threw a handful of snow at the Journeys Marathon before shuffling off for good (until the following December). The snow-covered trees made for great backdrops for photos as runners took it all in stride. Which is to say runners are enamored with this race, no matter the race conditions. This year’s event falls on Saturday, May 10. Runners begin their journey near Boulder Junction and finish in Eagle River. Go to journeysmarathon.org for details and registration.

Discovery Center by entering the Just Tri It Marathon on Saturday, June 28. The start time is 8:30am. Individual and team competition are featured in this event, which includes a 300-yard lake swim, 10K mountain bike and a 5K trail run. Advance and same day registration offered. Go to discoverycenter.net or call (877) 543-2085 for more information. T’s are assured to those who registered by June 20. Open to those 13 and older. Post-race snacks, awards and music follow the race.

St. Germain to host Classic Sled Roundup ST. GERMAIN – My 1972 Arctic Cat – non-running and in need of TLC -- found a new home about two years ago. My wallet was richer by about $250, but my heart poorer by the absence of this classic gem. I suspect, though, that one of these years I will see it restored to its former glory and displayed at the Snowmobile Hall of Fame’s annual Classic Sled Roundup in St. Germain. That’s the place where all the classic sleds from the 60s and 70s can be found each spring. This year’s Roundup, presented by Arctic Cat, Inc., will be from 8am to 5pm, Sunday, May 25 at the St. Germain town park. There’s also a very large swap meet that seems to be getting bigger each year. All brands are welcomed, and judging takes place of vintage and antique sleds for first and second place. The Vintage Sno-Pro Master Series Award and Best of Show will also be presented. Register your sled for just $5, with a maximum fee of $25 for multiple sleds. Registration begins at 7am. Swap space is $20 for standard size area. R&R Motorsports of Hazelhurst is also bringing new Arctic Cat snowmobiles on ATVs to the show. Music and food provided by the Bo-Boen Snowmobile Club of St. Germain all day. Tickets will be available for the drawing of the restored 1978 John Deere, which will take place that day. Proceeds benefit the Snowmobile Hall of Fame in St. Germain. For more information, call (715) 542-4463 or snowmobilehalloffame.com.

Catch the fun at this walleye tournament (PRESQUE ISLE) – Be among the anglers on a mission to have fun and maybe win a prize during the 23rd annual Presque Isle Walleye Tournament, May 16-18. The Presque Isle Chamber of Commerce sponsors the tournament held in what is called “Wisconsin’s Last Wilderness.” Fishing takes place on six well-known walleye lakes: Little Horsehead, Big Horsehead, Oxbow, Presque Isle, Averill and Van Vliet. Entry fee is $25 per person. The tournament field is limited so it’s manageable and fun to fish. For registration information, contact the chamber office at (888) 835-6508 or visit presqueisle. com. Hours of the catch-and-release tournament are Friday, noon to 8 p.m.; Saturday, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday, 7-11 a.m. Fishing and tournament regulations will be reviewed at Friday morning’s orientation at 10am at the Community Building. The total number of inches of registered fish determines winners over the weekend. After tall he “one last cast” are made Sunday, there will be a free luncheon for fishermen and the awards ceremony. There will be numerous door prizes for participants attending the ceremonies.
