Food, fun and excitement await you in the Northwoods Living in the far, far Northwoods (yes, we can see Canada from here ... on a clear day from atop Copper Peak’s famed ski flying facility), many of our daytrips revolve around the natural features, including waterfalls, Lake Superior, star gazing, and trail walks through the forests. But community celebrations such as Beef-A-Rama in Minocqua, the Blues Festival in Alpha (near Iron River, MI) or the Fall Harvest celebration in Hayward are also attractions that we don’t want to miss if we are nearby or, if not, as an overnight destination. Organizers of these small-town events pour their hearts and souls into them; ensuring visitors enjoy the food, the games, the music

(did we mention the food!), and much more. All three of the above mentioned events are waiting in the wings for you, and of course, many others across the splendid Northwoods’ landscape. Our many thousands of clear and pristine lakes and rivers invite boating, kayaking, canoeing, fishing and even scuba diving. Coupled with fine dining, vibrant nightlife, shopping, county fairs, races, and visits to museums and historical sites, the possibilities are endless for a memorable family vacation or daytrip to the Northwoods. We leave you with this observation: There’s still a big chunk of summer left and when August surrenders to September, still plenty of warm days to enjoy a trip to the land they call Up North!

Florence County boasts waterfalls, scenic roads Florence County’s amazing wild scenery is best viewed up close, and autumn is a perfect time to do just that. Located in Wisconsin’s Northwoods, Florence County boosts seven waterfalls, all located along the magnificent Pine and Popple rivers – both officially designated Wisconsin’s Wild Rivers. Spend a day exploring the sights on two designated road tours and take in a few of the waterfalls. (For a relaxed and leisurely pace the clockwise trek round the county to all seven falls should be split into a two-day excursion. Trails to the falls are hilly and rustic and require you to be in good physical shape.) The list encompasses Meyers and Bull Falls, Jennings Falls, LaSalle Falls, Big and Little Bull Falls and Washburn Falls. You can also take a relaxing drive on the county’s two designated rustic roads, which

combine to form a circular and picturesque drive (Rustic Road74) among beautiful hardwood forests. Autumn colors fairly explode on the forest canopy and at their peak are amazing. The roads cross the Popple River several times and pass near Morgan Lake Campground, a National Forest semi-wild campground. You can also see the former Civilian Conservation Corps’ Camp Newald, which operated from 1933-42, from nearby Highway 139. It takes about an hour or so to drive the approximately 36 miles of Rustic Road-74. Rustic Road-74 is located between WIS 139 and Cty. C near the Town of Fence. From Hwy. 101 take Cty. C west through Fence about 2 miles to Morgan Lake Road (Forest Rd 2159). Travel northwest on #2159 for 5 miles then turn right on Forest Rd. 2161. Drive approximately 7 miles until reaching Twin Rivers Road (Forest Rd. 2398). Turn southeast on Forest Rd. 2398 and travel 5.7 miles until reaching Newald Road. Turn east on Newald Rd. for 1.5 miles then northeast on Newald Tower Rd. for 2.9 miles. Here travel southeast on Rock Creek Rd. for 6.4 miles until once again reaching the junction with Cty. C

Florence County Fair – ‘A Fair to Remember’ countyfair.com. The fairgrounds is located at 5505 County Hwy. N, a third mile south of U.S. Hwy. 2.

This family event has something for everyone, including exhibits by county residents, animals, horse pull, mud bog runs, great music all weekend, food, games and contests, a magic and science show, and a classic car, cycle and tractor show. They plan on having a kids coin scramble, old-fashioned kids games, cricket-spitting contest, pie eating contest and many more. The events are free to enter and to watch. The garden tractor pull is on Friday; mud bog runs and bean bag tournament are on Saturday; with speed horse show, draft horse pull and classic car and motorcycle show all on Sunday. CRANDON – The National Championship of Figure Eight Endurance Barefooting – dubbed by Water Ski Magazine as the “craziest tournament in America” -- returns to Crandon Saturday-Sunday, Aug. 25-26. Competition begins at 9:25am Saturday with the finals on Sunday.

talking from the announcers. Guys who lose to a girl have to wear a pink t-shirt that says so for the rest of the day. Nearly 120 barefooters competed last year. There are divisions for juniors, seniors, masters (55 plus), open and women’s.

Known simply as “Footstock,” it’s the largest figure eight endurance barefoot championship in the world. Held on Peshtigo Lake, just outside of Crandon along Highway 32 & 55, it pits the world’s best professionals against amateur barefooters from across the U.S. on a grueling mile and a half course. Competitors go head to head as they battle wind, waves and each other to see who can barefoot the furthest before surrendering to exhausted calf and arm muscles and, for some, for a face plant at 40 mph. The last skier standing wins in this double elimination free-for-all. Winner or loser, there are blistered feet to treat in many cases. There are also costume contests, leech eating, and incessant trash

Fall Festival next stop at Camp 5 Museum

LAONA -- There is still time to ride the Lumberjack Steam Train during their summer season at Camp 5 in Laona. Their summer season runs through Aug. 18. More opportunities to ride the historical train comes during their Fall Festival, with runs on Sept. 1, 22, and 29. On Sept. 29, the Cowboys return to rob the Lumberjack Steam Train, riding their beautiful horses, dressed in vintage clothing and sporting traditional firearms. It is a chance to witness the Old West with all the action but without the danger! Fall Festival is a special time to ride the Lumberjack Steam Train, with the colored leaves enhancing the view on the two later runs, plus the corn maze, the haunted slaughterhouse (Halloween is just around the corner!), and all of the other attractions that make a visit on the train to the Camp 5 Museum complex a special event. This includes the Green Treasure Forest Tour, the exceptional logging museum, the petting zoo, the Crackerbarrel Gift Shop and the Choo Choo Hut Restaurant. Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t forget your camera, and drone hobbyists should bring their aircraft for some great pictures of the corn maze from aloft. The Lumberjack Steam Train leaves the vintage depot on U.S. Hwy. 8 & 32 beginning at 11am and every hour on the hour, with the last run at 2pm. Back to the Past on Rustic Road-34

ALVIN â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Located in the Chequamegon Nicolet National Forest is a rustic road that has changed little over the years. Designated R-34 in the stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s inventory of official Rustic Roads, this scenic route includes the Old North Road, the very first road in the Town of Alvin. Rustic roads are great routes to travel any time of the year, but especially so during the fall colors. They are lightly traveled and the maximum speed limit posted is 45 mph. Unique brown and yellow signs mark the routes of all officially designed rustic roads. Of course, there are many other roads in Forest County that are worthy of a drive as many go through the national and county forests and along sparkling blue lakes. R-34 is no exception as it threads its way nearly nine miles through a heavily wooded area, including a 50-year-old pine plantation abundant with wildlife. The entire teems with possibilities for hunting, fishing, hiking, skiing and snowmobiling. Festivities begin at 11am and end at 11pm with all things German, including, of course, the beer and food. There will be bratwurst, kielbasa and wieners along with homemade German potato salad, sauerkraut and pretzels. Enjoy the imported beer and wine along with your favorite domestic brands. The official tapping of the keg is at 11am.

Whether you are in the listening or dancing mood, enjoy the live music by the area’s favorite bands. There will be bouncy houses, face painting and pumpkin decorating for kids and much more. MENOMINEE – The annual Auto and Cycle Show sponsored by the Marinette and Menominee Auto Club will be Saturday, Aug. 11 at Menominee’s Historic Waterfront, next to the band shell and Marina Beach. Octonto Airport to host EAA Warbirds Fly-In & Car/Tractor Show OCONTO – Spread your wings and discover the fun to be had at the 10th annual EAA Warbirds “Badger Squadron Six” Fly-In at the Oconto’s J. Douglas Bake Municipal Airport on Saturday, Sept. 15 from 9am to 5pm. An opening ceremony to honor veterans will be at 10:30am. Previous events have witnessed the arrivals of Yaks, WACO, L 19 Bird Dogs, a TBM Avenger and various others, including civilian aircraft. The remote controlled (RC’s) aircraft will fly throughout during the day with a one-hour show scheduled at 2pm The antique and classic car and tractor show held in conjunction with the Fly-In will include Model A’s and Model T’s, muscle cars, and tractors. Previous shows have had over 100 vehicles on display.

Other attractions will include the popular Army encampment, as well as artisan and craft vendors. A wide variety of food, beverages and desserts will be available. Airplane and helicopter rides will be available for a fee. Ages 12 and under admitted free. Parking is also free. The airport is located at 2983 Airport Road.

LAKEWOOD – Downtown Lakewood will be buzz’n’ with the sounds of happy shoppers during that community’s seventh annual Festi-Fall celebration on Saturday, Sept. 15. The free event will be ongoing from 10am to 4pm. Artisans, crafters, antique dealers, and food vendors will be set up at various locations throughout the town. Last year’s event drew dozens of vendors featuring hand-made items such as jewelry, rugs, jams, painting, photographs, ceramics, wood carvings

and more. There were artist demonstrations demos, wine tastings, food and more. Local musicians will play throughout the day at various venues. Presented by the Lakewood area Enchanting Shops and the Lakewood Area Chamber of Commerce. The town of Lakewood is located in the heart of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, which offers countless opportunities for outdoor recreation.

Fall in love with ‘Miles of Art’ Fall Festival

“Shawano Country” Miles of Art is a fall celebration of the arts and nature throughout Shawano and Menominee counties. The event will include free, self-guided tours of area artists’ studios. Most of these studios are open only for this event, providing a unique opportunity to meet the artists and purchase their work. These artisans include painters, sculptors, potters, photographers, weavers, jewelers, woodworkers, mixed-media artists, fiber artists, and at select locations, live music and dancing Host artists include David Aschenbrener, David Rand Memorial site and Simon Levin. Other locations on the tour include the WOWSPACE Gallery in Wittenberg, Old Feed Mill on Pleasant Street in Gresham and the Yoga Room & Art Gallery, also in Gresham.

Additional locations feature American Indian and other area artists. Woodlands Studio in downtown Shawano will feature three artists from the Grignon family and a guest photographer. As visitors drive the scenic routes to the artists’ studios they can view over 300 “barn quilts” on display throughout Shawano County. These colorful 8’x8’ squares hanging on historic barns have been hand painted to replicate traditional quilt patterns as well as original designs. Also on display are numerous exterior “quilt squares” in and around the Village of Gresham and over 20 large exterior wall murals in the Village of Wittenberg. Oktoberest and more reasons to visit Shawano County SHAWANO – Germans around the world – and those who love the German Oktoberfest -- are celebrating in September and October with their own versions of this popular festival. Among those in Wisconsin is Shawano, which has set aside Saturday, Oct. 6 for its 13th annual Oktoberfest celebration. The event will be held in the 100 and 200 blocks of Main Street, in the heart of Shawano downtown. From 9am to 4pm, enjoy German-themed music, food, art and crafts from local and area vendors, games for kids, and sidewalk sales. Be sure to vote for your favorite scarecrow. It promises to be a fun time!

Free admission to the public; held rain or shine; free parking. Oct. 6 is also the date for the eighth annual “Miles of Art” in Shawano County. From 10 am to 5pm you can visit studios of working artists. Special emphasis will be on the works and themes of local/regional artists. Many events and self-guided tour opportunities throughout the weekend include farmers market in Franklin Park, Walls of Wittenberg murals, Shawano Country barn quilts, Gresham Area Advancement quilts, Menominee Heritage Day and lumberjack breakfast at the Menominee Logging Camp Museum over in Keshena.

Embarrass River Campground and ATV Park

TIGERTON -- The Embarrass River Campground and ATV Park was developed in 1998 as a model multi-purpose ATV park, which also now welcomes UTVs. The multi-use park offers about 20 miles of terrific ATV trails that wind through the 504-acre park. Trail hours are 8am to dusk. The trails are marked and are mostly hard-packed. There are some rugged sections with rocky climbs to test veteran riders, along with mud pits and deep ponds for those hankering to get down and dirty! There are a total of 48 scenic campsites, many scattered along the banks of the calm and winding Embarrass River. Some of the amenities are electrical hook-ups, new shower, flush toilets and laundry facility, an RV dump station, potable water and firewood. (Remember, state law forbids firewood being brought into Wisconsin.) The trails are open year-round, but the campground closes around late November. Pumpkin Run ATV/UTV Rally showcases state’s largest ATV/UTV trail system

Riders will enjoy the scenic trails during the peak of Colorama when the woods are ablaze in the autumn colors of red, yellow and orange. In addition to riding the great trails, Pumpkin Run’s schedule includes the weekend-long poker run with over 20 stops in Iron County, food, games, prizes and more. Events take place in both Mercer and Hurley.

The Great Pumpkin Parade on Saturday, Oct. 6 will start at the Ranger Station in Mercer and make its way through downtown to the ATV/UTV trail and then on to the wrap-up party at The Pines Restaurant. The parade lineup begins at 4pm, the parade starts at 5pm, and the wrap-up party begins at 6pm. The party includes live music, games, and the drawing of the poker hands. That leaves Sunday open for additional trail riding, or maybe a hearty breakfast at a local restaurant or café before the trip home.

New this year will be an ATV/UTV Pull, similar to a tractor pull, on Friday afternoon, Oct. 5. The event will take place at Liberty Way Tap House, 2040W Saarnio Road Mercer, off trail 17. Prizes will be awarded by vehicle classes. The poker run registration is $20. You can register online at mercerCC.com. Participants can pick up their rally packet with an ATV/UTV map and commemorative bandanna at either the Mercer Chamber of Commerce or Hurley Chamber of Commerce. After riders get their poker run sheets stamped at participating business, the completed sheets are turned in for riders to draw poker hands for a chance at cash prizes.

Dates announced for ‘Mercer Muskie Madness’ Tournament

MERCER – The seventh annual “Mercer Muskie Madness” Tournament is set for Friday and Saturday, Oct. 19 and 20 with headquarters at the sponsor, Gateway Lodge and Resort in Mercer. Eligible tournament lakes are Turtle Flambeau Flowage, Fisher Lake, Spider Lake, Oxbow Lake, Echo Lake, Grand Portage Lake, Pike Lake, Mercer Lake, Lake of the Falls, and Trude Lake, according to tournament director Wayne Riebe of Gateway Lodge.

Tournament entry fee is $175 for each two-member team ($200 after Oct. 1), which includes the Friday lunch and the banquet dinner and awards ceremony Saturday night. Lincoln Co. Fair to welcome thousands of visitors

MERRILL – Bull riding and monster trucks will be big grandstage draws to the 2018 Lincoln County Fair set Wednesday-Sunday, Aug. 15-19 at the festival grounds in Merrill. Theme of the 130th annual fair is “Back to the Wild West.” Admission to the fair is free, with some 30,000 people stopping by on an average five-day run. The midway features favorite carnival rides by Spectrum (more rides are scheduled for this year), games and food. The hard work and loving care of the past year are featured in the 4-H and adult exhibits, ranging from flower arrangements to woodworking, along with cattle, sheep, poultry and other animals judging. There

will be educational and commercial vendors galore The grandstand entertainment kicks off Wednesday of fair week with the 4-H horse show at 5pm, with free admission. The Rice Bull Riding Company brings its “bull and barrels” performances to the arena at 7pm each night on Thursday and Friday nights. The LCFA Demo Derby will start the crush’n’ action at 6pm Saturday. Then on Sunday, at 6pm, the All Star Monster Trucks will give you pause if you ever double park on their turf! ‘Ride the River’ event set for River Bend Trail MERRILL – Combine your love of free flowing water with spinning spokes by taking part in the “Ride the River” bicycling event on Saturday, Aug. 25 in Merrill. The Friends of the River Bend Trail is sponsoring the fundraiser to support the Agra Pavilion. The bike rides on the scenic River Bent Trail along the Wisconsin River includes an opportunity to bike the Council Grounds State Park. Riders will have the option to travel either 5.5 miles or 12 miles on this self-guided, leisure bike ride. The longer route will loop through Council Grounds State Park. Check-in begins at 9am and the ride starts at 10am. The course will be open until 1pm. Both courses will start and end at the Agra Pavilion at 400 S. Park Street, Merrill. The cost for the ride is $15 per person or $30 per family. If you have a membership as a Friend of the River Bend Trail there is a discounted registration fee of $10 per person. Smoking the competition! Dragon Boat Festival will rule Lake Minocqua

MINOCQUA -- The colorful and fast-paced Minocqua Dragon Boat Festival will take place Saturday, Aug. 18 on Lake Minocqua, with headquarters at Torpy Park, downtown Minocqua. More than 15 teams are on tap to compete in the 2018 event. Spectator admission is free.

There’s an opening ceremony at 8am to awaken the spirits of the dragon boats, followed by the races beginning at 9am. Teams in 45-foot long boats race 300 meters from east to west, finishing in front of Torpy Park’s swimming beach. The final race is at 3:15pm with awards following. The festival features live entertainment, food from St. Germain

Primetimers, beer from Lakeland Noon Rotary, and fun merchandise. “Dragonlings” of all ages can enjoy free activities in the children’s tent, sponsored by the Northwoods Children’s Museum of Eagle River. It’s sharp – just axe a lumberjack WOODRUFF -- The logging of northern forests is a significant part of Wisconsin’s history. At Scheer’s Lumberjack Shows in Woodruff and Hayward visitors can learn about the logging history of the state and see current lumberjacks compete in events that were part of the competitions held during that era. Logging was difficult work and several of the events visitors will see at the show demonstrate just how dangerous the activity could be. Not surprisingly, the two most dangerous events of the show include swinging an axe. Axes used in Scheer’s Lumberjack Show, and in all lumberjack competitions, aren’t purchased at a local hardware store. Axes preferred by the professional competitors are made in New Zealand or Australia. Ask a lumberjack in Scheer’s Lumberjack Show why his chopping axe had to make such a long journey to get into his hands, and he’ll respond – “SHARP.” The axe has to be extremely sharp and able to hold an edge. It costs about $100 to get an axe sharpened and after it’s done a guy could use it to shave his face – really. Lumberjacks combine that edge with physical strength in two of the events featured in Scheer’s Lumberjack Shows.

The Spring Board Chop is an interesting event that also requires an accurate swing of the axe. It demonstrates the primitive method of climbing a tree that was used to get above the fanning root system at the butt. Using his axe, the lumberjack notches a vertical standing log and wedges a board into the notch. The lumberjack then climbs up onto the board and chops a vertical-standing log in half. This is very dangerous because the lumberjack is chopping six feet in the air on a very narrow board. Strength, accuracy and balance combine to prevent an accident and to make the lumberjack a winner. These and eight other events are featured in Scheer’s Lumberjack Shows in Woodruff and Hayward. The show is educational and combines athleticism with comedy -- a great family adventure.

Minocqua’s Beef-a-Rama keeps getting bigger

MINOCQUA – Beef-A-Rama -- of the most popular community celebrations in the Northwoods -- will fill the streets of the Island of Minocqua with thousands of people and the aroma of roasting beef on Saturday, Sept. 29. It’s actually a two-day celebration, sponsored by the Minocqua Area Chamber of Commerce, with live music and beer garden Friday night at Torpy Park. You can stay on top of the events by downloading the chamber’s Beef-A-Rama app. Come early Saturday morning the cooks – some seasoned with many years at the grill, others donning their chef’s aprons for the first time – and their helpers will begin to set up the grills and to decorate their assigned spaces. Not only are they vying for the coveted best taste award, but also the best decoration award. From pirates and zombies to cow-themed costumes, it’s a sight to behold! During the long roasting process, the cooks take time out to answer questions about their “secret” seasonings and sauce and other tips that will guarantee a mouth-watering roast beef sandwich. Speaking of (sand)which, the roast beef sandwich sales start at 10am. Last year, they served over 5,000 pounds of beef! Those looking to stretch their calf muscles can do so at the Rump Roast Run/Walk at 9am from Torpy Park. Options are 5K and 10K distances and a “Calf Mile” for kids. Making this event a complete outing, there is the Prime Choice

craft show with over 70 vendors at Torpy Park, beef eating contest at 11:30am, live music on two stages, beer sales, the cow plop guessing contest, petting zoo and much more. And what’s the point of cooking if you can’t show off what you created! So the cooks and their crews will head down Main Street in the famous “Stampede of Roasters” at 3pm en route to Torpy Park. There, announcement of various awards are made. Tips: Avoid the hassle of parking downtown (parking stalls fill quickly) and take a shuttle bus. RHINELANDER – Musky anglers from around the country will come to Rhinelander this fall to compete in one of the most historic musky tournaments in the nation – the Hodag Musky Challenge – set for Sept. 22-23. Then you’ll want to register them (and yourself) for the 27th annual Nicolet Wheel-A-Way family bike event on Saturday, Sept. 1 in Three Lakes. This is not a race, but a casual, self-guided ride for individuals of all ages, and is suitable for families and bikes pulling trailers. Children do need to be accompanied by an adult. The ride begins at 9am at Don Burnside Park, 6931 Stanzil St., Three Lakes. Riders can choose either the 18.1-mile route or the 36.5-mile route, both on paved roads identified with road markings and directional warning signs. he 2018 Tomahawk Fall Ride for MDA is shaping up to be another huge event for the community and for others miles away from Tomahawk. The ride brings in tens of thousands of bikers over the course of several days to experience the joy of riding in the great Northwoods. An untold number of spectators also converge on Tomahawk to share in the fun and excitement. From Tomahawk, numerous events across the landscape in all directions coincide with the Tomahawk Fall Ride. A core value of the event is helping others less fortunate. Since 1981, Tomahawk Fall Ride has raised over $2 million for MDA to support individuals and families throughout the Northwoods region area with life-enhancing resources and services that open new possibilities and maximize independence so they can experience the world without any limits. The annual celebration puts money into the pocketbooks of small businesses and non-profits as well. That money is circulated several times over in those communities. goes out to all motorcycle riders, from the big Harleys to other brands, to take part in the annual Thunder Parade on Friday, Sept. 14. Not only will you enjoy the ride through the countryside and downtown Tomahawk, but it will be a blast for the thousands of spectators gathered along the 18-mile route. If you plan to be a spectator, you’ll want to bring a lawn chair and or blanket, along with a camera to record the procession. The Wisconsin State Patrol and local police officers lead the parade, as well as being the final riders. The Tomahawk Fire Department’s trucks signal their arrival with a wail of sirens. Dignitaries from Harley-Davidson Company, members of the Harley Owners Group (H.O.G.) and Harley-Davidson Employee Riders Association are among the first riders.

The route

– Participants will line up at the Tomahawk School District complex starting at 5pm. The goal is to have everyone ready for the parade by 5:30pm or so. After a 5:55pm blessing of bikes by the local clergy and the playing of the National Anthem, the riders start rolling out of the school parking lot at 6pm. The riders go east on Kings Road to County Road D, then to County Road H, north on H to County Road A. From A, the bikers turn south on North Fourth Street en route to Wisconsin Avenue. Their journey ends in Historic Downtown Tomahawk for the start of the street dances. The Tomahawk Lions and the Northern Lights Harley Owners Group pair a number of people with visual imparities with their members. The Lions also welcome those on Medicare or Medicaid disability in the 54487 Zip Code to request a ride. A limited number of seats are available. Riders under age 18 require helmets. Post 2687 is again organizing the downtown scene for a memorable visit for riders and the general public. Pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage, biscuits and gravy, coffee and juice served -- all for $8. There is a “MASH” Blood Drive on Friday, Sept 14, 8am to 2:30pm in the VFW upper hall. The draw helps ensure adequate supplies are there for the needs of veterans, accident victims, emergency surgeries and planned medical procedures. Only 4,000 tickets are being sold for this raffle of a 2018 Harley-Davidson Fat Boy. It’s the 115th anniversary limited edition with the 114 engine. It was purchased from Harley-Davidson of Madison, according to a fire company contact. Tickets are $10 each, and they are available at Dietz’s Phillips 66 and other local businesses. The Harley can be seen at Dietz’s, although it may be at other locations on special occasions. All proceeds benefit the fire company. Tickets will also be available during the open house. Brings the kids and enjoy the open house at the fire department on U.S. Hwy. 51, which is just north of the Manitowish Waters Community Center. Fire trucks and department equipment will be on display. They will be selling brats, hot dogs, beer and other refreshment. There will be activities for kids, numerous other raffles and paddle games. Note to visitors: The Festival Grounds is a new site this year, as previous years the event has been held at the MARC (Merrill Area Recreational Center). Ribfest hours are from 11:30am ’till sold out (but no later than 4pm). There’s also a craft and vendor sale going on that day (opens at 10am) at the Festival Grounds. And there will be a gun show happening that same day in the Expo Center on the grounds. Food is the main draw of this event of course. This year’s top prize is a 2018 Harley-Davidson Electra Glide Ultra Classic motorcycle, which the company describes as the “essential touring machine.” Second prize is a week’s getaway package. Proceeds from the ticket sales benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA), which funds research into a cure for neuromuscular disease, as well as supporting those struggling with the disease. Raffle tickets are $5 each or 5 for $20. Tickets are available at SARA Park until the time of the drawing. (5pm Saturday). They are also available at the Harley-Davidson Tomahawk Operations during the open house at the Somo facility and at select local businesses. Register for the demo rides from 10am to 5pm each day. Harley-Davidson representatives can answer any questions you may have about the new bikes. No reservations are required; first come, first ride. To demo the bikes, riders must have a valid motorcycle operatorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s license, be at least 21 years of age, sign a waiver form and follow a prescribe route of about a dozen miles. The 2018 event is also an official H.O.G. pin stop where members can pick up the free commemorative pins.

Copper Peak Adventure Ride

On Saturday, Sept 9, you can join a fun mountain biking race that is set on the beautiful trails at Copper Peak. The course navigates down to the Black River and then climbs up 500+ vertical feet up to the historic Copper Peak ski jump. The downhill is a super fun and bermy with intermittent jumps and bridges. Tomahawk Operations History The original plant in Tomahawk was purchased from Tomahawk Boat Manufacturing Co. in 1961, and Harley-Davidson began producing parts in 1963. In 1965, Tomahawk Operations became the sole supplier of the fiberglass parts including sidecar bodies, saddlebags and windshields. In 1995, the North Plant was added to accommodate increased production of sidecars, windshields and the painting of starter motors. In 2002, Harley-Davidson added a 60,000-square-foot facility on Kaphaem Road. A few years later, a 35,000-square-foot addition was built to house injection-molding operations. Shortly after that, windshield operations also moved to the Kaphaem Road plant. In 2014, Tomahawk Operations started painting Hard Candy Custom parts. This complex painting process required a new, innovative sanding cell and work process. The following year also saw several new process developments, including a new silkscreen machine, new router and state-of-the-art oven in the windshield department.

ast year’s Tomahawk Fall Ride at SARA Park for MDA raised over $117,000 for our organization. We are seeing progress from the dollars that are raised, and those supporting the event have a lot to do with that progress. Many of our kids with a life expectancy of their teens are now living well into adulthood. We are constantly working for treatments and cures, while providing supportive services to help quality of life and maintain independence. There are two MDA offices in the state of Wisconsin. The MDA Green Bay office covers 39 different counties in Wisconsin and up into the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and serves over 800 clients living with muscular dystrophy, ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig’s), and other muscle debilitating diseases. Seventy-seven cents of every dollar goes directly to the clients we serve. SARA Park is the only location where 100% of the proceeds raised, goes to the Muscular Dystrophy Association. All proceeds of bike raffle tickets purchased at the MDA tent downtown, BP in Tomahawk, and at SARA Park go directly to MDA. The money that is raised for MDA at SARA Park stays local to Northern Central Wisconsin.

All money raised stays in the area to help local individuals and families living with one of the 43 neuromuscular diseases represented under the umbrella of the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Here’s a look at some of the programs and services those donations help support: • MDA Summer Camp -- to send Wisconsin children to MDA Summer Camp for the “best week of the year.” Children ages 8-17 have the opportunity to go to MDA Summer Camp at no cost to their family. Summer Camp is a time for these children to live unlimited and barrier free. They get to swim, fish, play, go on Harley sidecar rides, make new friends and memories and much more. • MDA care centers -- MDA clients are able to see a neurologist, pulmonologist, occupational therapist, physical therapist and equipment specialists all in one appointment. • Educational seminars- Kids are living longer, going to college and starting careers. These seminars coach them how to navigate higher education and the workforce as someone living with a disability. • Support groups -- MDA wants not only clients to have support, but support for the families that love them too. • Donations also go to research to find a cure, provide resources and care for individuals living with Muscular Dystrophy, ALS, and related diseases.

Vietnam Veterans

â&#x20AC;&#x201C; The Vietnam Veterans Commemorative Trail is located entirely in Price County with 13 markers at various parks and monuments to represent the 13 years of service and sacrifices of the brothers and sisters in arms for each year of the war. Each was chosen by Vietnam veterans to mark a significant event that occurred during the war. This scenic drive is a commemorative project to remind the public of the sacrifices made by Vietnam veterans, an unheralded group of soldiers. Price County is a Vietnam War Commemorative Partner. The trail runs from southwest to northwest Price County starting in Big Falls Park south of Kennan. The markers are all reachable via paved roads. Stops along the scenic route include Big Falls County Park in Kennan, the Ogema Veterans Monument, Timmâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hill County Park in Ogema, and the Prentice VFW Hall. In Phillips stops include the Wisconsin Concrete Park, Phillips VFW Hall, Veterans Park, and Solberg Lake County Park. Traveling north markers are located at the Old Town Hall Museum in Fifield and in Park Falls at Smith Lake County Park, the Old Abe Monument, and Hines Park. The last marker is located at the Forest Home Cemetery in Fifield.

Park Falls to host Flambeau 40 Bike Race & Time Trial

The on-road bike race (professional chip timing) on Saturday is a 35-mile loop consisting of beautiful rolling hills along the Flambeau River. Start time is 10am. New this year, juniors have the choice to ride the full road race or the new juniors road race. The junior race will be a six-mile loop on mostly level roads. Start time is 8:30am.

Presque Isle Fish N Lure Rally – Sept. 22

PRESQUE ISLE – The Presque Isle Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring its second annual “Fish Lure & Rally” auto tour on Saturday, Sept. 22. Pontoon rides of the legendary 10-lake chain. Drive to the Blue Bayou -- about 2 miles south of the MW Community Center – and board the pontoons from the restaurant’s docks. The Manitowish Lake cruises will leave every half-hour from 9:30am to 2:30pm. Each cruise lasts approximately 45-60 minutes. The Manitowish Waters Lakes Association sponsors them.

The communities of Presque Isle, Boulder Junction, Manitowish Waters and Winchester each have a designated number of lakes available for the tournament. There will be a fly rod division again this year. The money raised from the Musky Classic goes towards scholarships for students from the North Lakeland area. Registrations are now being accepted. Port Wing goes big on Labor Day weekend PORT WING – The big Labor Day weekend is extra special in Port Wing, where the community is hosting their 29th annual Arts & Crafts Show, a fish boil (Wisconsin’s largest) and the Lions Club’s classic car show. Events start out Saturday, Sept. 1 and conclude Sunday, Sept. 2. The Arts & Crafts Show is held both days at the park across the street from the town hall and pavilion. From easy to tough: Morgan Falls and St. Peter’s Dome trails

Located on the western end of the Penokee Range that was formed 1.8 billion years ago, these popular trails are located in a non-motorized area of the Chequamegon National Forest. Highlights include the 70-foot high Morgan Falls and the overlook at the top of St. Peter’s Dome, which, on clear days, rewards climbers with an excellent view of the Chequamegon Bay of Lake Superior and the Apostle Islands to the north. Morgan Falls is the state’s second highest falls and water cascades down a series of rocks steps in the canyon. These trails are popular also for snowshoeing. Morgan Falls Trail: 1.2 miles round trip. The trail to Morgan Falls is accessible for people with disabilities. The trail is graveled and the slopes are fairly flat. Once you cross Morgan Creek, you will come upon an old campground built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. The remnants of the campground include stone fireplaces, an artesian well and a round cistern.

The view is well worth the climb but don’t let the 3.6-mile round trip fool you in thinking it’s an easy hike – you should be in good physical condition to attempt the hike to the top. Wear sturdy climbing shoes or boots and use a walking stick to keep you from a nasty fall on the way back down, especially if the trail is Telemark Golf muddy. Then turn south to the falls (east to St. Peter’s Dome). You won’t find a thundering falls because the volume of water cascading over it isn’t large, even in the spring. What you will find is a waterfall that’s so pretty that professional photographers use it as a backdrop for high school senior pictures and engagements, such as what was occurring the day we visited it. St. Peter’s Dome Trail: 3.6 miles round trip. The trail to St. Peter’s Dome (or Old Baldy) is fairly rugged with exposed rocks and tree roots in the trail and steep climbs. Old Baldy is a red granite formation that rises to an elevation of 1,565 feet.

Celebrate summer with Haugen Fun Days

To get you in the mood for the weekend, there’s a Friday night street dance with live music in the downtown from 5pm ’till midnight. Don’t worry with making breakfast Saturday, as there’s an allyou-can-eat pancake breakfast at the Haugen fire hall Saturday morning. Still hungry? Check out the kolache and bake sale at the village hall. The senior citizens group is hosting a sloppy Joe plate lunch at the village hall beginning at 11am. Hungry for bargains? Threshing bee steams into view TURTLE LAKE – The Moon Lake Threshermen’s Association’s 34th annual Threshing Bee will be the weekend of Aug. 18 & 19 in Turtle Lake. It’s a weekend of stepping back in the past with lots of demonstrations and displays of how farmers tilled the soil and harvested crops using early generation farm equipment and tractors, including steam-powered versions. The association members restored these interesting and in some cases, very complex machines. Gates are open from 8am to 5pm at the threshing bee site, the George Sollman’s farm, five miles south of Turtle Lake on Hwy. K at 862 2-3/8 Street, Clayton.

On display will be antique tractors, cars, trucks and snowmobiles. The Clayton Fire Department will have its “smoke house” available for demonstrations on safely escaping a burning house. Company C 8th Wisconsin volunteers will set up a Civil War camp. Saturday’s events include a sawdust pile for kids, live music, sanctioned pedal pull, slow tractor race, tractor tug-of-war and tractor parade. Sunday’s schedule includes an antique and classic tractor pull (starts at 11am), live music and raffle drawings. There will be train rides for kids, face painting and lots of food, including a pancake breakfast both days, along with a chicken dinner Sunday.

Wildlife area receives high marks from users WEBSTER – Just northeast of Webster is the Keizer Lake Wildlife Area, offering 1,352 acres of outstanding habitat that supports a full range of wildlife. Trails take visitors into the area, including up a hill where they can look at two lakes on either side of them. Visitors can fish, hunt, canoe, bird watch, cross-country ski or just soak in the serene beauty of this special place. Its wild inhabitants include deer, black bear, wild turkey, snowshoe hares, wolves and other small game, including pheasant, grouse, partridge and American woodcock. Mostly water, marsh and forested upland, Keizer Lake Wildlife Area also includes fishing opportunities. Fishermen go after stocked trout in Banach Lake and bluegill, bass and northern pike in Big Lake and North Lake.

Bird watchers should note that Keizer is on the Great Wisconsin Birding & Nature Trail list for the “Lake Superior – North Woods Region.” There are bald eagles, osprey and songbirds to add to your personal list. A new mountain bike trail is being developed in the wildlife area. The network includes logging roads, double and single-track trails. Most are gated or bermed, according to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. The sate-owned wildlife area is located 5 miles northeast of Webster on Hwy. A, 4 miles east of Hwy. 35. Bike the scenic trails of Burnett County

COUNTYWIDE -- Summer can be a wonderful time to explore Burnett County by bicycle. All the bike trails double as hiking trails. Some are well known, such as the Gandy Dancer Trail, but other lesser known ones have unique charm of their own as well. The Gandy Dancer Trail stretches from St. Croix Falls to Danbury and beyond. A trail pass is required for anyone 16 years and older who bikes the Gandy Dancer Trail.

There are other trails in Burnett County worthy of your attention. Kohler-Peet Trail winds through the forest north of State Highway 70 and near County Road F. It passes by the St. Croix River and runs through a brush prairie called the â&#x20AC;&#x153;barrens.â&#x20AC;? The barrens are home to the endangered Karner blue butterfly. Northwest Wisconsin is home to one of the largest populations of the Karner blue butterfly that is rare almost everywhere else. The trail will also take you near a large cedar swamp. A breathtaking view of lowland forests can be viewed on the Cedar Interpretive Trail. The lowland forests include sections representative of the more northern regions; others of the more southern regions. Also recommended for bikers is the Benson Brook Trail located south of State Highway 70. It starts a short distance from Raspberry Landing and meanders very close to the St. Croix River. Benson Brook takes hikers to Lagoo Creek Hiking Trail. Majestic old-growth red and white pine can found along the Brant Interpretive Trail. Polk County welcomes ATVers COUNTYWIDE – ATV/UTV and motorbike enthusiasts can find four ATV/UTV trails in Polk County that will provide hours of riding enjoyment. Polk County is blessed with beautiful scenery. Cattail Trail runs from Amery to Almena for a total of 18 miles of which 12 miles are in Polk County. The trailhead is at Amery where rest rooms and picnic areas can be found. Along the trail you will spot lots of wildlife. The trail is a former railroad bed that runs across six bridges. The multi-use trail is open to off-road motorcycles spring/summer/fall. The Sterling Trail offers seven miles of closed loop wooden trail. Sterling Trail is open from June 1 through Nov. 15. Off-road motorcycles are not allowed on this trail.

The Clear Lake-Clayton Trail, another multi-use trail, is also open year round. It follows 11 miles of railroad trail. There is an ATV/UTV trail through the Village of Clear Lake. Off-road motorcycles allowed spring/summer/fall. Motorcycles not licensed for highway use cannot use that village trail. The Gandy Dancer Trail does not allow frozen ground ATV/ UTV on the Polk County segment. Your machine must be registered in order to use these trails. Remember to obey all speed limits and other signs and respect private property. Some municipalities allow access through their village or city (limited routes). Explore Flambeau River State Forest’s special places

WINTER -- The Flambeau River State Forest was officially established in 1930 and for more than 85 years, it’s been sought out by campers, boaters, hikers, fishermen, hunters, photographers and anyone else who loves outdoor beauty. The 90,000-acre forest lies mostly within Sawyer County, but it also encompasses parts of Price and Rusk counties. It surrounds 75 miles of the North and South forks of the Flambeau River. The forestry headquarters is located in the town of Winter. The North and South Forks join within the park, offering over 75 miles of mostly undeveloped river. Of special note are three places of splendid scenery and recreational opportunities (listed below) that await your next visit. Little Falls/Slough Gundry

Bring along a picnic lunch, fishing poles and camera as you venture into this area. You’ll hear the roaring rapids long before you arrive at the river’s edge. Huge boulders split the rushing water and elegant pines on the banks tower over everything. This area is located in the far southeastern part of the state park off Highway M. No glass bottles are allowed in this area.

Sobieski Flowage

This area was a former cranberry farm that lay dormant for many years. After the State of Wisconsin purchased the land, many hands set to work rejuvenating it to a working medium size flowage that now provides a feeding area for waterfowl, nesting habitat (the former cranberry beds) and several miles of hunter/hiker trails. This scenic area is just south of Little Falls/Slough Gundry.

Bass Lake

Bass Lake was designated a wilderness lake nearly a quarter century ago in order to protect its fragile beauty. No camping, no motorized vehicles or motorized boats (and no overnight mooring of boats) ensure that this 94-acre lake and its surroundings are protected for generations to come. Fishing opportunities are a big plus, too. Bass Lake Wilderness Area is on the far eastern side of the state park. From the intersection of Highways W and M, take Tower Hills Road north. Bass Lake Road is to the right off Tower Hills Road.

HAYWARD – Treeland Resorts’ third annual Premier Musky Fly Fishing Championships will be Sept. 27-29, and offering thousands of dollars in daily door prizes. No better place can be found for fishing, relaxation and outdoor beauty than in the Nelson Lake area, located just six miles north of Hayward. With some of the area’s best walleye fishing action and pristine waters, the 2,503-acre Nelson Lake caters to anglers, kayakers, canoeists, and all water enthusiasts alike. A dam built in the mid-1930s on the Totagatic River created the flowage that is Nelson Lake. The shoreline is virtually untouched by human development. There are four public boat landings, including one below the dam, and about a dozen private landings at resorts and campgrounds. HAYWARD -- At Scheer’s Lumberjack Village, located on Hwy. B, a half-mile east of Hayward, a talented and diverse team of individuals coordinates efforts to provide guests with hours of fun at one location.

Visit Town & Country Days SHELL LAKE – The long Labor Day weekend brings three days of Town & Country Days activities and festival-type food to Shell Lake. The 40th annual celebration of rural and city life is sceduled for Friday, Aug. 31 to Sunday, Sept. 2. There’s a library book sale at the Shelter House both Friday and Saturday, a scavenger hunt, family bingo, inflatables for the kids and Dean-o-mite kids interactive fun at the pavilion, along with a food court and beverage garden.

Loads of fun will be found Saturday with the 8am Lake Run (9mile run and 5K), spelling bee, fastest kid race; craft fair, Chocolate Fest, sailing regatta at 1pm, kid’s pedal tractor pull, Dairyland Garden Tractor pull at 5pm, and evening street dance with “Mickey and the Monsters.” Sunday’s activities include continuation of the craft fair, tractor pull at 11am, kiddie parade at noon, grand parade at 12:30pm, and car and bike show from 2-5pm.

Friday events include Lake Superior whitefish fry. The big draw will be the 7pm truck pull.

Put Washburn County road trips on your autumn ‘to do’ list

COUNTYWIDE – Driving or biking the back roads and even the major highways of Washburn County during autumn nearly takes your breath away because of the gorgeous colors. It’s especially so because of the county’s 800 glacial lakes that reflect the reds, yellows, oranges and even the browns of the hardwood forests during Colorama – a period of fall leaf color roughly from mid-September to mid-October. The Washburn County Tourism Association office suggests that you pick up a Washburn County highway map and check out these four amazing fall color routes for car, bicycle or motorcycle. The routes begin at the tourism office in Spooner and range from 39 to 67 miles and pass through the beautiful forests of northwest Wisconsin, around sparkling lakes and into the heart of some great small towns. Historic Ironwood Theatre is a true gem from the past Ironwood has held onto its many historical buildings that framed its early years, each worthy of a visit. Chief among them is the famed Ironwood Theatre, which has been nearly restored to its original grandeur that attracted generations of visitors from the silent film era to today’s productions.

The theater can seat 732 patrons. Various performances, including singers and comedians, along with the showing of films occur throughout the year. The theater is located at 113 E. Aurora Street. The Ironwood Theatre in downtown Ironwood was built as a vaudeville and silent movie palace in 1928 at a cost of $160,000 (equivalent of approximately $2 million today). The theater flourished during The Hollywood Golden Age of the 1930s, 40s and 50s.

The Ironwood Chamber of Commerce invites you to take one of two self-guided tours of historical sites in Ironwood’s downtown district.

The Ironwood Theatre was donated to the city in 1982 and was placed on the National Registry of Historic Places in 1985. Today, a nonprofit organization operates the theater and hosts numerous shows per year, such as recitals, music festivals, children’s plays and plays performed by the Gogebic Range Players. Noteworthy historic features of the theater include the Barton Organ, an original fixture intact as it was in June 1928, when it was fist installed, and the restored 3-panel Proscenium Mural on the theater’s ceiling.

Downtown walking tours

The first tour of the commercial district highlights 12 sites, starting with the original Ironwood Historical Society building on McLeod Avenue and visiting Theatre North, the 1925 Sears Roebuck building and the 1892 railroad depot and ending at the Carnegie Library, built in 1901. The second tour of the residential district begins at the 1921 Memorial Building and includes stops at the 1895 Curry House and the 1925-built L.L. Wright High School and ends at the 1886 Church of the Transfiguration.

Hiawatha

The famous Hiawatha statue is located at the Old Norrie Iron Mine site located on Suffolk Street, off Silver Street. Billed as the “World’s Tallest and Largest Indian,” it was built in 1964 and is made mainly of fiberglass. Known by the locals as “The Big Indian,” it is 52 feet tall, weighs 8 tons and looks north to Lake Superior. Hiawatha was the leader and founder of the Iroquois Confederacy and the statue was designed to symbolize unity and peace within each nation that had joined the confederacy.

Big Stormy Hat

The Big Stormy Kromer Cap is another quirky and fun sight to take in while in Ironwood. It symbolizes one of the products – and the best-known one at that – of the Stormy Kromer Mercantile company. It’s located on Cloverland Drive just off U.S. Highway 2/E.

Ironwood Depot

Built in 1892, the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad Depot was designed in the Richardson Romanesque style. It was the hub of an elaborate railroad yard operation in the center of Ironwood. As the mines closed, so too did the fortunes of the railroads, with the last iron ore trains ending in 1967 and passenger trains ending their service at the Depot in 1970. Purchased by the City of Ironwood, the Depot was refurbished by volunteers, and it is now home to the Ironwood Area Historical Society and the Ironwood Area Chamber of Commerce. The Depot features displays on early railroading, and a large exhibit illustrating the history and operation of the Ironwood iron mines. In 1986 the Depot was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. During the summer months, the Historical Society staffs the Depot daily, offering explanatory tours of the exhibits as well as local historical lore.

Little Finland

The Little Finland log building is the home of the National Finnish American Festival, preserving the Finnish heritage of hardy settlers who came to work in the mines of the Penokee Range. It’s located at 5750 U.S. Highway 2, Hurley. The museum has a large collection of Finnish artifacts, most of which came with their owners from Finland. Old Bibles, a rug loom, musical instruments and curios make up only a small part of the holdings. The gift shop offers a large selection of glassware, linens, books, and clothing. The gift shop is open Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10am to 2pm, April through December. Visitors to Little Finland can also tour the Harma House Museum, a traditional Finnish homestead located on the same grounds.

LAKE GOGEBIC – Early bird registrations are being taken for the 41st annual Lake Gogebic Walleye Tournament coming up on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 7-8. The Lake Gogebic Area Chamber of Commerce sponsors the event, which is held on one of the hottest walleye (other species too!) lakes in the region. As most anglers know, fall is an excellent time to pursue walleyes. The top prize for the largest walleye is $1,000, with second taking home $500, third $200 and fourth through 10th place receiving other cash prizes. The catch and release contest also includes daily cash prizes for the largest bass, perch and northern pike. There’s an “early bird” registration drawing for a rod and

reel valued at about $60. All prizes will be awarded after Saturday’s dinner. In Lake Gogebic’s 13,380 surface acres of prime fishing water, there are walleye, smallmouth bass, northern pike, jumbo perch and some whitefish. Vacationers and day trippers will find the area provides plenty of opportunities for different kinds of outdoor recreation from mountain biking to camping to star gazing. The Blues Fest music gets underway at noon in the pavilion with music by this talented lineup: Mid-Nite Storm at 12:30pm, Donnie Pick at 2 pm, Heather Crosse Band at 5pm and Sons of Legend at 7pm.

There will be food and merchandise vendors, along with refreshments by the American Legion Riders-Post 21 (no carry-ins allowed), and a “Blues Berry” pie eating contest at 4pm with divisions for 12 and younger, and 12 and older. Billy Balloons will be there to create wonderful and amazing balloons for the kids. There will be face painting also. Raffles will be conducted throughout the afternoon.
