Editor’s COLUMN Your Northwoods mantra
Float lazily down a river on a yellow inner tube, kayak quietly past a family of loons, toss a jig near a sunken log (there’s a big bass lurking under it), be one of the first to bike a new bike/hike trail section, or just relax in front of a campfire with family and friends. Repeat as necessary for total fulfillment. You get the idea! We’re not done with summer yet! There are still weeks of warm and comfortable outings to enjoy in the Northwoods. From Beef-A-Rama in Minocqua to the Rutabaga Festival in Cumberland, each weekend has a community festival of some type for families to celebrate their heritage. Whether your shopping mantra is arts & crafts shows outdoors or fine art indoors, there’s a locale and style to fit every taste. We can’t even begin to count the number of artists who reside in the Northwoods, seeking the great outdoors for inspiration. The result is a tremendous amount and variety of art to enjoy viewing and to buy for home, office and gift giving. Maybe you seek the unusual? How about the Nye bison bone exhibit at the Polk County Museum or snowshoe baseball in Tomahawk or the
Dean S. Acheson
lumberjack style shows in Woodruff and Hayward. Or take the elevator 26 stories to the top of the Copper Peak Adventure Ride north of Bessemer for a view of the fall colors that will dazzle you! There are fishing tournaments targeting bass, walleye, northern pike and muskie in our lake country. Big bodies of water attract boaters of all stripes and horsepower, while the smaller, secluded lakes whisper “I’m quiet” for those who seek solitude. If you live to ride on two wheels (or maybe three), the Fall Ride to Tomahawk is where you will want to be this September. Thousands of motorcycles heed the call each year as they cruise a six plus-county area surrounding Tomahawk. But maybe it’s pedal powered wheels you favor; then the Wheel-A-Way bike tour in Three Lakes or the mountain bike epic they call the Chequamegon Fat Tire Festival in Cable/Hayward is more your speed. Couple that with comfortable lodging ranging from cabins to motels (or maybe it’s campgrounds and campfires for the family) and your next vacation or weekend getaway should be in the land they call, “Up North.”

Burnett COUNTY Burnett County celebrates Jim Jordan Buck centennial By Mike Kornmann One hundred years ago (Nov. 20, 1914), Jim Jordan of Danbury headed down the Soo Line Railroad on the opening day of deer season. His goal was to put meat on the table for his family. By mid-morning, Jordan bagged a very large whitetail buck. What he didn’t know was that his buck would ultimately be declared a world record over 50 years later and be revered by hunters around the world. This past March, both Danbury (Town of Swiss) and the Burnett County Board voted by resolution to support community recognition of the legendary Jim Jordan Buck. Don Chell, chairman of the Whitetails Unlimited – Burnett County Chapter, suggested the centennial idea saying, “We have to celebrate the 100 years of the Jordan Buck. It’s a significant part of our hunting heritage.” The buck has a legendary story and is the current USA typical whitetail record. Of over 3,100 counties in the country, only Burnett County holds the typical whitetail record. County board supervisors also voted unanimously to establish a self-guided hiking trail, gateway signage and public art at the Blueberry Junction Park.

original Jordan Buck antlers are owned by Bass Pro Shops. The Jim Jordan Buck has the attention not just of hunters and wildlife enthusiasts in Wisconsin. The centennial is getting attention from national press. Gordon Whittington, editor of North American Whitetails, plans to cover the centennial “The Jordan Buck is a magnificent buck that is revered by hunters around the world,” Whittington said. “And the story behind the record antlers is shared over and over again over coffee and deer camp campfires. We must celebrate the Jordan Buck so that the legendary story continues to be shared for generations to come.”
The Jordan Buck Heritage Hike guides visitors on the Gandy Dancer Trail (former Soo Line railroad) south of Danbury. Jim Jordan’s hunt started with a horse and carriage ride down the railroad track, then went east a ways into the woods and worked back north paralleling the railroad. Hikers can re-live the legendary hunt by walking the 1.3-mile trail segment. People can view the Yellow River from a bridge near where the buck was eventually found. A tour map is currently in development. Two events are planned to celebrate the centennial this fall. The free Community Celebration will be Oct. 4 at Crex Meadows Visitors Center in conjunction with the Crex Wildlife Fest, and the Jordan Buck Extravaganza also on Oct. 4 will be at Northwoods Crossing in Siren. For the most current centennial event information, visit burnettcounty.com/JordanBuck100. Whitetails Unlimited is also having its annual banquet on Sept. 20 in Grantsburg. Raffle tickets for a 1914 Winchester rifle and a Jordan Buck replica shoulder mount will be sold there. The Wisconsin Buck and Bear Club is making its replica Jordan Buck mount available at the Crex Meadows Visitors Center for “selfie photos.” Marlin Laidlaw, director of the club, commented, “This will be one of the few times the average citizen will be able to get up close and personal with the legendary Jim Jordan Buck.” The

Camp 5 welcomes visitors to their Fall Festival weekends LAONA – The Lumberjack Steam Train has been busy this summer carrying passengers to Camp 5 and all of its attractions, including the petting zoo, the logging museum, the Green Treasure Forest Tour and the pontoon boat ride on the Rat River, as well as the Cracker Barrel Gift Shop. Visitors can also enjoy a meal at the Choo Choo Hut restaurant. But, did you know that Old 4-Spot, the vintage steam locomotive, will be operating on three weekends this fall? The annual Fall Festival takes place during the glorious days of autumn color on Sept. 20, 27th and Oct. 4. Oct. 4 is the weekend the “Cowboys” return to Camp 5. This is always an exciting time, as Old West re-enactors take on the clothing and activities of that wild time in American history, when six-guns, Winchester rifles, and good horses were a source of pride to the cowboy. In fact, many of the re-enactors play other roles of people from this bygone era. You might meet an old time preacher, a convict, a school marm, or even a “floosie.” Often, when some of the “bad guys” rob the train, you will be a witness to the crime, but never fear, the “good guys” will arrive and save the day! 4-Spot leaves the old depot on Hwy. 8, west of Laona, at 11am and every hour thereafter until 2pm, with the last train leaving Camp 5 at 4pm. The regular summer season ends on Aug. 23, but they welcome you back for all three Fall Festivals! To learn more about Camp 5 and the Lumberjack Steam Train, check out the website at: lumberjacksteamtrain.com, or call for more information at 715674-3414.

An anniversary toast to the roast!
Minocqua’s Beef-A-Rama enters 50th year MINOCQUA – Roasted-to-perfection beefs, crazy costumes and an equally quirky “Parade of Beefs” all will come together Saturday, Sept. 27 during the 50th annual Beef-A-Rama -- Minocqua’s signature event that celebrates having fun in the Northwoods. Activities get going Friday, Sept. 26 with “Veggie Rama,” a farmer’s market tasting day at the Minocqua Park complex, Hwy. 70 West. Later that night, from 6-9pm, enjoy the concert at Torpy Park featuring Mamas Little Hippies and sponsored by the Island Business Association. Then get plenty of rest Friday night because Saturday dawns with a full schedule of family activities. Registration for the Rump Roast Run starts at 7am at the American Legion, or go online to rumproast.run. The little ones have their own race, the Calf Mile, starting at 8:15am. Lakeland Rotary’s 11th annual Rump Roast Run/Walk starts at 9am, featuring 5K and 10K races. All races start at Minocqua Veterans Park, downtown. The top male and female winners in the two Rump Roast races each get a 16to 18-pound roast beef – a race prize unique in the nation, perhaps! Chefs and cooks with years and even decades of experience will compete for prizes during the day as they slowly roast their beefs on the Main Street and side streets of Historic Downtown Minocqua. The famous “Parade of Beefs” begins promptly at 2:15pm through the downtown en route to Torpy Park. Volunteers there will slice the beef as others create the mouth-watering beef sandwiches. Of course, if you can’t wait for a tummy-filling sandwich, they start selling beef sandwiches at 11:30am at Torpy Park and on Chicago Street. Other Saturday events you shouldn’t miss are the “Prime Choice” craft fair, farmer’s mini-market, both in Torpy Park; Krafts Kuddly Kritters on the New Concord Inn lawn, artist demonstrations at Twisted Widdlin Fool, children’s performer at Veteran’s Park and beef eating contest at Torpy Park. MINOCQUA – It’s fitting that the new location of T.J.’s Butcher Block & Market is a former used car sales office/lot because that’s where T.J.’s will have their 10th annual “Pride & Joy” Classic Car Show on Saturday, Aug. 30. Plan your day to include a visit to the car show and also to tour their newly remodeled store, boasting an large array of fresh meats, artisan cheeses, spices, beer, liquor and lots more. The new store is just a sausage-link away from their former store, which was torn down so that the state Department of Transportation could add a turning lane onto Hwy. J from Hwy. 51. You now enter T.J.’s from Hwy. 51. The car show features vehicles from all eras. Show hours are 10am to 2pm. There will be food, music and raffles. If you have a classic car, truck or motorcycle, add it to the collection of these beautiful vehicles on display. Vehicle registration is from 9am to noon. The first 50 entries will receive car plaques. For more information, call 715-356-5258. The sponsors, T.J.’s and Northwoods Foods, will donate proceeds from the car show to Lakeland Hospice.

‘Art on Main’ is a perfect medley of arts and music THREE LAKES – Spend a perfect summer day viewing high quality art and being entertained by a musical duo during the 10th annual Art on Main Saturday, Aug. 9 in Three Lakes. This year, Art on Main switches to Saturday rather than Sunday as in years’ past, according to the Three Lakes Center for the Arts, the event sponsor. Admission is free. More than 40 juried painters, photographers, quilters and other fabric artists, potters, jewelers and more will be set up for the second year in picturesque Cy Williams Park on the equally enchanting Maple Lake. Hours are 10am to 3pm. This is a prime location for an art fair, with the gazebo in the center to provide an ideal spot for the musicians to perform, according to Gay Scheffen, co-chair of the event. And perform they will. Eddie Biebel & Vickie Lynn – “Acoustic Americana” will be entertaining listeners all day. A Milwaukee Journal music reviewer had this to say about the duo: “Eddie’s dynamic guitar playing and earthy warm baritone blend perfectly with Vickie’s soaring heartfelt vocals to create something new, fresh and exciting: a seamless mix of music genres that make for a passionate and powerful performance you’re bound to enjoy.” In the event of rain, they will play a concert at the Three Lakes Center for Arts at 8pm. Tickets at the door will be $10. With food and drinks, picnic tables and a playground for the kids, it will be a perfect day to spend in Three Lakes.

Tomahawk Fall Ride 2014
TOMAHAWK Fall Ride Guide INSIDE THIS ISSUE
Hundreds of Bikes Take Part in the Thunder Parade..............................E SARA Park Welcomes Riders..................................................................... F Fall Ride Guide Map Directory.................................................................. L Win a raffle bike or travel voucher............................................................ N
Welcome! Come for the Fall Ride fun, return for Colorama TOMAHAWK – Motorcycles of every make and description will populate the highways and byways as well as the streets of Northwoods’ towns both small and large during this year’s Fall Ride to Tomahawk, set for Thursday through Sunday, Sept. 11-14. The traditional headquarters is Tomahawk, whose year-round population of 4,000 swells by many more thousands during Fall Ride. No one really has a handle on the number of motorcyclists rumbling in and out of here, but it’s safe to say more than 10,000 bikers will converge on this area. All we know is there is one heck of a lot of leather (take that Texas, we rustled half your longhorns!), bandanas and arm tattoos. Add to that figure the non-riders drawn to the Fall Ride activities, such as the Friday night Thunder Parade, and you’ve got the makings for one of the largest cities – temporarily that it may be -- in northern Wisconsin. Riders will feel the tug of the open road each day and by mid-morning will head to all points of the compass. Others, who have lodging elsewhere, point the handlebars to Tomahawk, especially SARA Park, where the regional chapter of Muscular Dystrophy Association hosts their activities Thursday through Saturday. The street dances in Tomahawk are also big draws. Again this year, the drawings for the bike and getaway package occur during the Saturday night concert at SARA Park. To the riders who shop retail stores, we realize it may be difficult (and unwise) to lash a Northwoods rustic styled lamp to the rear seat of the bike. So you should know that most merchants are more than happy to ship items to your home address. Mid September is a bit early for Mother Nature to fully paint the leaves red, orange and yellow. Although truth is told one can see solo efforts, sometimes groups of leaf color, during Fall Ride. Which is our invitation for you to return later when the leaves and sumac ground cover are in full color during a period aptly called Colorama, roughly from the third or fourth week of September to the middle of October. Speaking for the various Fall Ride event organizers, civic clubs, merchants, tavern and restaurant owners and many others – we are very grateful that you chose to visit us during Fall Ride. We hope to see you next year and for many years to come! Remember to ride safe!

Tomahawk Fall Ride 2014
Friday night forecast is for Thunder! Multiple light flashes (from cameras), too
TOMAHAWK – There is so much to love about the Fall Ride to Tomahawk, but the event many people look forward to may be the Friday night “Thunder Parade.” A prelude to the evening’s street dances, the parade attracts hundreds of riders and thousands of spectators who line the streets of Tomahawk and out in the countryside where the Thunder route takes riders. Thumbs up, cameras clicking and arms waving, the spectators are eager to see the bikes that thunder past them. The name HarleyDavidson figures prominently here, but making appearances are Victory, Indian, Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, BMW, Can-am, and other brands of motorcycles. Many of the bikes are customized to a certain degree. A few are devilishly so to the max. The 2014 Thunder Parade begins forming at 5pm when riders gather at the Tomahawk School complex for the line-up. As noted, all brands and models of bikes are welcomed to this free event. After a blessing of bikes by local clergy and the singing of the National Anthem at 5:55pm, the riders start off immediately on the 18-mile trip. They travel east on Kings Road to County Rd. D, then to County Rd. H, north on H to County Rd. A. From A, the riders turn south on North Fourth Street en route to Wisconsin Avenue. Local law enforcement and Wisconsin State Patrol officers lead the parade and also bring up the rear. Tomahawk Fire Department members also drive their trucks in the parade. Among the first riders are dignitaries from Harley-Davidson Company, members of the Harley Owners Group (H.O.G.) and the Harley-Davidson Employee Riders Association.
Among the honored guests are visually impaired individuals and also Tomahawk residents on Medicare disability. The Tomahawk Lions invite the above to experience the thrill on being on a motorcycle as a passenger. Arbor Vitae H.O.G. Chapter members provide the rides. There is no cost to participate but availability may be limited. All riders under age 18 must wear a helmet, and all riders must be able to sit on the back of a bike (no sidecars available). Contact Orrin Kolberg at 715-453-7106 or e-mail o.kolberg@frontier.com for more information. Participants must provide their own transportation to and from the Tomahawk High School. The ride goes on rain or shine; bring a lawn chair or blanket for seating. Be sure your camera battery has a full charge before you leave the house, as there are dozens and dozens of photo opps.

Tomahawk Fall Ride 2014
Park your ride at SARA Park for music, food, merchandise Drawing for the Harley takes place Saturday night TOMHAWK – Here’s what you need to know about activities, vendors, rides and music at SARA Park, the Fall Ride to Tomahawk headquarters of the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s regional chapter, which sponsors activities there on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Sept. 11-13. It’s also the only place in Tomahawk where all the proceeds benefit MDA that serves North Central Wisconsin. SARA Park is located on the west side of Tomahawk. For those of you new to the Fall Ride, there is lots of room to park your ride in this spacious park. It’s also a great place to see different bikes and what their owners have done in way of customizing them. Most bikes are parked on the former airstrip in back of the Ice Arena. SARA Park is also the place to kick back, chow down on festival-style food, drink your favorite brew, chat about past, present and future rides, and listen to the free music. MDA-sponsored activities are back to behind held three days, but they start on Thursday. There are no MDA sponsored events on Sunday, although other parties have events happening that day. For many, it’s an extra day to get a morning ride in before returning home. Look elsewhere in this issue of our Fall Ride Guide for expanded coverage of essential events, such as the Harley-Davidson – Operations open house on Somo Avenue, a listing of music venues and more. Pick up a copy of our Up North Action magazine, free at many locations throughout the Northwoods, for additional information about fun things to see and do during your visit. Your Fall Ride Guide wants you to know that: SARA Park – Is an official H.O.G. pin stop. Demo rides – The latest bikes from the design and engineering experts at Harley-Davidson are available to try out. A tour guide leads each group out into the countryside and back to SARA Park (no, you can’t take it home with you so be sure to stop at a HarleyDavidson dealer to talk price on your next ride). Official MDA Fall Ride to Tomahawk and official Harley-Davidson – Tomahawk Operations merchandise. It’s official (did we say that already?), it’s cool, and there’s lots of it available, including T-shirts, sweatshirts, caps and pins, women’s clothing and kids’ clothing. Fun Runs -- Saddle up and take your choice of one or more of the four Fun Runs through the scenic Northwoods, all for a chance to win cash prizes. Each run maps out the official stops. Those who
Tomahawk Fall Ride 2014 complete a Fun Run will be entered into a drawing to win cash prizes. Complete all four and get four entries. Win all four drawings and get beat up by your unlucky brothers… no, we’re kidding about that. Although if you, ahh, hog the winnings, we’re pretty sure they will ask you to buy the next round. Merchandise Vendor Displays & Sales -- Vendors will feature leather and other clothing, motorcycle products, Harley-Davidson dealers, jewelry, leather sewing, Sturgis souvenirs, services such as airbrushing and pin striping, and more. Food and drink vendors -- From soda drinks to beer, from cheese curds to hamburgers, you won’t leave SARA Park hungry or thirsty. Paddle Raffle – The popular paddle raffle at the main stage beer tent features a custom “paddle bike wheel.” Raffle tickets – Purchase one or a handful of tickets for a chance to win a 2014 Harley-Davidson FLHTCU Ultra Classic Electra Glide with custom paint, or the second prize, a weekend getaway package. The bike features a tour pak signed by Willie G. Davidson. Tickets are $5 each or 5 for $20. “Rumble through the Woods” pledge ride – Sign up for the Saturday afternoon ride, which will be led by Wisconsin State Patrol motorcycle officers on an approximately 60-mile loop to the Merrill area and back to SARA Park in time for the concert and big drawing. Let’s get down to particulars: Thursday, Sept. 11 3-11pm • Park opens at 3pm for food and merchandise sales, raffle ticket sales and Fun Run sales • Live music -- 3-7pm Howard “Guitar” Ludtke • Live music -- 7-11pm Spicy Tie, in the Ice Arena. Test ride the new Harleys at SARA Park
TOMAHAWK – Harley-Davidson will bring a complete line-up of their 2015 models for motorcycle riders to take a test ride on Friday and Saturday from 9am to 5pm each day at SARA Park, 900 W. Somo Avenue. Harley-Davidson representatives who staff the event can answer any questions you may have on the new bikes. No reservations are required; first come, first ride. To demo the bikes, riders must have a valid motorcycle operator’s license, be at least 21 years of age, sign a waiver form and follow a prescribe route of about a dozen miles. The 2014 event is also an official H.O.G. pin stop where members can pick up the commemorative pins.

‘Pork in the Park’ Ribfest returns to Merrill
MERRILL – Join other lovers of delicious BBQ ribs during the second annual “Pork in the Park” Ribfest, starting at noon, Saturday, Sept. 13 on the grounds of the Merrill Area Recreation Center (MARC) on Hwy. 107, Merrill. Colorful Pork in the Park Ribfest t-shirts will be available for purchase. Enjoy cold beverages and listen to the music played by Bobby Evans throughout the afternoon. Evans and his band are a favorite during the Fall Ride, which is also this weekend. Speaking of favorites, motorcyclists are invited to cruise Hwy. 107 down to Tomahawk along the Wisconsin River. No matter the amount of fall color, it’s always a beautiful trip.

Bike raffle to raise funds for veterans van Since our nation’s founding, America’s military have given their all during times of conflict and peace. One of the benefits for their service is receiving care and treatment at veteran’s clinics and hospitals, including the VA Hospital in Iron Mountain, Mich. But there’s a hitch for some area vets seeking treatment there. The current van, a Ford Explorer, takes veterans to and from that hospital. But the tired vehicle has more than 100,000 miles on the odometer, and it’s not wheelchair accessible. Two local businesses are teaming up, with support from other groups, to raise funds to buy a new van that’s more in line with the veterans’ needs. Northwoods Harley-Davidson and the Minocqua Brewing Company are raffling off a 2014 Harley-Davidson Sportster SuperLow with net proceeds to go toward a new10-passenger van. Raffle tickets at $5 each are available at the dealership and the restaurant (the bike is on display there). The drawing will take place Oct. 2 at Minocqua Brewing Company. The cost of the van will exceed $30,000, but the drive is well on its way to collect the local share of funds. Funding for the van will also come from the Disabled American Veterans’ national fund and from Ford Motor Company itself. “We teamed up with Harley-Davidson and are doing everything we can do to help our vets,” said Darby Ison, who with husband Al, are owners of the Arbor Vitae dealership. She noted that two of their employees proposed the fundraising idea. In addition to
Email: managerabvirhinelander@gmail.com
the current fundraiser (the dealership is providing the bike for the raffle), Northwoods Harley-Davidson allocated funds from its spring breakout party for the van. Also, with the support of artist Bob Metropulos Jr., owner of Parkside Gallery in Minocqua, they are raffling off one of his original wildlife paintings, with proceeds going for the van. A new van will definitely help the veterans. The current van can accommodate only three passengers. It makes four trips weekly to the Iron Mountain hospital. The “northern route” on Monday and Tuesday stops at Minocqua, Arbor Vitae, Lake Tomahawk and Eagle River. The “southern route” on Wednesday and Thursday encompasses Rhinelander, Monico, Crandon, Conover and Laona. Because of the lack of availability of seats, van reservations have to be made in advance. Darby Ison said they have received a number of donations, including one for $1,000, for the van purchase. In addition, Thrivent Financial is matching some of the donated proceeds. Slo’s Pub in Arbor Vitae is hosting “bike nights” on Thursdays through August, with proceeds dedicated for the van. Other financial support has come from the United Church of Christ’s Thrift Shop in St. Germain. The new van will be ordered from Ford Motor Company and will be owned by the Veterans Administration. To learn more about the fundraiser and how to contribute, call 715-358-5054 and ask for Jim Wolter.

Harley-Davidson motorcycle to be raffled off
TOMAHAWK – Winning a 2014 Harley-Davidson FLHTCU Ultra Classic Electra Glide. It can be as simple as buying a single ticket for the Fall Ride to Tomahawk raffle to benefit MDA. Be assured that we are rooting for you to win it (if we don’t)! The nearest we got to winning a bike was an older brother who claimed one of the MDA raffle bikes several years ago. We still buy tickets, hoping to go home on a new ride. Oh, what a ride it would be. Sporting a custom paint job by Kris Gille, an employee of the Harley-Davidson - Tomahawk Operations, and a tour pak signed by Willie G. Davidson himself. The bike is the featured prize in the 2014 MDA bike raffle, whose new owner will be announced Saturday evening during the headline concert at SARA Park. Harley-Davidson Motor Company – Tomahawk Operations donated the bike (valued at north of $25,000) to benefit MDA. Second prize in this drawing is a 2015 Daytona Bike Week (hotel and airfare for two) getaway package. The winner of either prize does not have to be present for the drawing. Available at local businesses, tickets are $5 each or 5 for $20. Tickets will also be sold at SARA Park and at the HarleyDavidson – Tomahawk Operations’ plant on Somo Avenue (new location this year) during their open house. You must be at least 18 years old to buy tickets or to claim the prize. Taxes are also your responsibility. If you don’t have a rabbit’s foot or the speed dial number for Mr. Leprechaun, increase your chances by buying more tickets. All the raffle money goes to a very good cause. Rx: The open road There’s nothing like the feel of wind in the face as you climb hills and bend the curves to your satisfaction as the group of riders you’re leading embarks on a motorcycle adventure in the Northwoods. Maybe there’s an itinerary in mind, maybe not. It doesn’t matter. The open road takes you past dozens of lakes, with hundreds more hidden in plain sight amongst the towering pines. A bald eagle launches from its perch as it spots a fish tantalizing near the surface of one of those lakes. You spot a sign that identifies it as Clear Lake, one of several sporting that same name in the Northwoods. You don’t catch the actual snatch, but, later when it’s time for a break, the cleanup guy in the rear of the group says, “The bird got his lunch.” You nod, and think again about Clear Lake. Sparkling and Crystal are two other lake names you’ve seen in the Northwoods. “Gotta be a reason for those names,” you muse, knowing the answer. Finally, when the stomach growls louder than the pipes on the bike, you motion to the other riders that it’s your group’s turn to stop for eats. The welcomes from the bartender and wait staff are genuine. The noon menu is typical Northwoods roadhouse: most choose a double cheeseburger, chased with a beer or a soda, and some crunchy frys. The ball game on the plasma TV holds your attention for a spell, but not for long. “Bro,” you nudge the guy hogging the stool next to you, “time to hit the open road.” On the way out you hold the door open for another group of riders feeling the hunger pangs too. “You’ll find good eats in there,” you remark as they pass by into Northwoods hospitality.

Fun run completion might get you a handful of cash Again this year there will be four different “fun run” routes for motorcycle riders who want to raise funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Association during the Fall Ride to Tomahawk. The fun runs wrap up Saturday night with cash prizes awarded. Proceeds from the fundraiser will go to MDA to help patients and families. You do not get cards for a “best” poker hand, rather your name is entered in the drawing Saturday night if you complete all official “stops” outlined on the fun run sheet. You must turn your card over to MDA staff before the deadline, which is 5pm, Saturday at SARA Park in Tomahawk. Each route is different and has varying mileage. You are free to do the route on your own, as there are no ride guides. And you can do more than one fun run. Each completion gets you an extra
photo by Dean S. Acheson chance at a cash prize. Fun run sheets are $10 each and can be purchased at SARA Park.

Harley-Davidson plant on Somo Avenue sets open house TOMAHAWK – See the inner workings of a motorcycle plant during the open house hosted by the Harley-Davidson – Tomahawk Operations production facilities, 426 E. Somo Avenue, Friday and Saturday, Sept. 12-13. Hours are 10am to 3pm each day. During your visit you can purchase MDA raffle tickets for a 2014 FLHTCU Electra Glide Ultra Classic motorcycle. Tickets are $5 each or five for $20. Employees manufacture plastic parts, including saddlebags and windshields. Tomahawk’s Somo Avenue facility paints and ships the components to the York and Kansas City Harley-Davidson Vehicle Operations facilities where it all comes together on original equipment motorcycles. Live music is also featured at SARA Park and at Nokomis Park (just north of Tomahawk), as well as at numerous taverns throughout the area that welcome the bikers.

Pik’s Pub and The Liquor Store, at opposite ends of Wisconsin Avenue, host bands for the street dances, sponsored in part by Dairyland Cycle Insurance. Friday night’s street dance gets underway as soon as the Thunder Parade concludes and the barricades to traffic are set up. Admission is free and the public is welcome.
SARA Park – MDA sponsored, Wishbone Ash, until 11pm
Food tents and a beer tent anchor each end of Wisconsin Avenue in the downtown. The city of Tomahawk allows open containers, but only in the specified, roped off area. The privilege is extended from 5pm to midnight Friday and from noon to midnight Saturday. Otherwise, hoist a cold one inside a tavern, supper club or beer garden, according to the city ordinance. Officers on duty will be there to enforce the ordinance and to prevent underage drinking. It’s time to party so we’ll give you the run-down of bands playing in the area (check ads in this issue of Fall Ride Guide for other entertainment): Thursday, Sept. 11 SARA Park – MDA sponsored, Howard “Guitar” Ludtke from 3-7pm. Road Trip Northwoods-Style Eye-popping attractions await your visit There’s a bucket list of man-made quirky attractions larger than life-size in the Northwoods and if you and your buddies want to see them, we can get you there. We tried to find you the World’s Largest Bottle Opener, but had to settle for the World’s Largest Corkscrew. Bring your camera and take photos of your bikes and ride companions in front (or under) these attractions. They are listed somewhat in order of appearance.
The Big Penny – Woodruff: This one is easy to find but hard to pick up. At 17,452 pounds the penny (leave your metal detector at home, it’s made out of concrete) can be found at 923 Second Avenue, just a block off Hwy. 51 in Woodruff. It commemorates the 1953 fund-raising campaign by local school children to save pennies to build a hospital. The campaign ignited the imagination of the nation, including being featured on a television show.
Scrap Metal Motorcycle – Irma: Junk farmyard metal repurposed to create a large motorcycle. Get off the Hwy. 51 expressway by turning on County Road J west, then an immediate right (north) to the end of the street. Owner Charles Hamilton has many other sculptures on the property, known as Ft. Hamilton, and a small church dedicated to U.S. veterans.
Large Bass – Manitowish Waters: Not the largest fish statue we’ve seen, but a keeper nonetheless. Located in Memorial Park, one of the prettiest places ever to park the ride and to enjoy the view of Rest Lake.
Big Bull Moose – Tomahawk: On Hwy. S, 2.5 miles south of Tomahawk, welcoming guests to the Road Lake Pub & Grill. At about 15 feet tall, the moose would give Babe the Blue Ox (see below) a tussle. Paul Bunyan – Minocqua: The huge sign and statues (new) of Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox are in front of the Paul Bunyan Logging Camp Restaurant. The sign has been the backdrop for countless family photos over the decades.
Claire d’Loon – Mercer: She’s found a permanent nest alongside the Mercer Area Chamber of Commerce, downtown Mercer. At one time she could vocalize the cries of a loon, but sadly no longer as her voice box isn’t working. At 16 feet tall and a svelte 2,000 pounds, she’s the biggest bird we’ve found. Hiawatha – Ironwood: From U.S. 51, to Hurley, right on Hwy. 77 (Silver Street) into Ironwood, then right on Suffolk Street to the statute. Can’t miss it. At 52 feet, Hiawatha weighs in at hefty 16,000 pounds. No peeking under his garment. The Skier – Ironwood: One mile east of Ironwood on U.S. 2. An advertisement for Big Powderhorn Mt. Clad in a blue stocking hat, blue ski pants and red jacket and wearing ski goggles, this dude looks cool even when the temps are in the 90s. Big Stormy Kromer Cap – Ironwood: It’s big, it’s red and it’s
Tomahawk Fall Ride 2014 located near U.S. Hwy. 2 and E. Cloverland Drive. A symbol of North Country everywhere, the Stormy Kromer Cap is one of many products manufactured by the company of the same name in this city.
Leaping White-tail Deer – St. Germain: On Hwy. 70, three miles west of St. Germain. It’s in front of the Whitetail Inn restaurant and out of the way from the errant golf balls we hit from the nearby course.
Copper Peak Ski Flying Jump – Ironwood: Located on County Road 513, 10 miles north of Hwy. 2. Once the site of “sky flying” competition down the gigantic slope. Take the elevator up 24 stories to the top and imagine what Evil Kenevil would say if he alive today and staring down at the possibility of the mother of all leaps.
Large Eagles – Eagle River: Eagle River, eagle. H-mmm. There’s a connection somewhere there. Located on the east and north entrances to the city. There’s even a “bronze” colored eagle by the downtown museum.
Plummer Mine Headframe – Pence. Located a quarter mile west of Plummer Mine Rd and Hwy. 77 (near Hurley). As with the Copper Peak Ski Flying Jump, the 80-foot headframe is technically not quirky, but worth a visit nonetheless as it’s last mine headframe from the old mining days in Wisconsin. The structure is on the National Register of Historic Places. World’s Largest Corkscrew – Hurley: About one mile west of the intersection of Hwys. 2 and 51. The 24-foot tall high corkscrew stands in front of the Corkscrew Liquor Store. Owner Robert Vittone, who collects corkscrews, welded the bigger version corkscrew out of stainless steel tubing. Corrugated Tube Man – Park Falls: Located on Hwy. 182, about four miles east of the intersection of Hwys. 13 and 182. Standing about 10 feet tall, CTM is made out of corrugated steel pipe commonly used in drainage ditches, etc. Maybe you’ve seen his cousin, Muffler Man. Giant Eagle – Park Falls: The statue of Old Abe the Civil War eagle is on the lawn of Park Falls City Hall, 400 Fourth Ave. South. Park Falls bills itself as the ruffed grouse capital of the world. And one very big eagle. Leaping White-tail Deer – Fifield: intersection of Hwys. 13 and 70. Leaping lizards, another deer frozen in the headlights! Located in front of the Northwoods Supper Club. Fred Smith’s Concrete Park – Phillips: Fred Smith is no longer with us (having died in 1976), but more than 200 folk art figurines that he created will leave you impressed with his dedication and artistic vision. Made out of concrete, chicken wire and discarded bottles, the folk art continues to amaze. Scrap Metal Man on Bicycle – Phillips: Located at W7013 Dama Road. Don’t know much about this one. Not large, on a bicycle waving to passerbys. (One of two in this list I haven’t personally visited.) Paul Bunyan – Sayner: Yep, it’s another Paul Bunyan and Babe. Kinda like seeing Santa at the mall and downtown on the same day when you were a kid. You gotta have faith in these things. Paul and Babe are in front of the Vilas County Museum, where you can find the original snowmobile and tons more of interesting stuff. Chief St. Germain – St. Germain: this is a two-for-one visit as there’s a large carved muskie on a plank, both adjacent to the information booth, corner of Hwy. 70 and Hwy. 155. Although the statue is “big,” it’s not named Chief Big St. Germain, or Big Chief St. Germain, according to the chamber’s description of it.
White Stag – Sugar Camp on Hwy. 17N between Eagle River and Rhinelander: Stag is situated in front of the White Stag Restaurant along Hwy. 17. Perhaps it’s drawn there by the big wedge of iceberg lettuce with homemade dressings served with each meal. The Hodag – Rhinelander: The local high school teams are nicknamed the Hodags, and a picture of this fearsome creature surely gives their opponents pause. A very cool, very large Hodag with fangs bared stands in front of the Rhinelander Chamber of Commerce. There’s a “cowboy” themed Hodag on the north side of the city, 1505 N. Stevens St. There are smaller Hodag statues throughout the city. Most don’t bite. Rhinelapus – Monico: A twisted tree trunk monster that grew up in the same neighborhood as The Hodag. Some basic root surgery over the years resulted in the addition of an eye and a horn. Located now in the open-air shelter in Monico Community Park. Fenced – to keep vandals away or maybe, just maybe it’s ALIVE! Larry the Logroller – Wabeno: Paul Bunyan’s long-lost brother? This is another statue in front of a museum, and again, a nifty museum at that. World’s Largest Soup Kettle – Laona: Tied to the annual “Community Soup” event, the community hosts each August, the huge stew pot is suspended from a tripod of wood. It’s seven feet in circumference and three feet deep. The community no longer uses it as the vegetable soup is cooked in smaller containers. If they ever feel the need to change the name, the grey steel pot is big enough for to hold a few lumberjacks in need of a bath – it could then be called “Community Soaper Day.” Or maybe not. The kettle is located in the little park on U.S. 8, just south of Mill Road.

Swinging an axe while standing on a springboard can be a scary event.
It’s sharp – just axe a lumberjack WOODRUFF -- The logging of northern forests is a significant part of Wisconsin’s history. At Scheer’s Lumberjack Shows in Woodruff and Hayward visitors can learn about the logging history of the state and see current lumberjacks compete in events that were part of the competitions held during that era. Logging was difficult work and several of the events visitors will see at the show demonstrate just how dangerous the activity could be. Not surprisingly, the two most dangerous events of the show include swinging an axe. Axes used in Scheer’s Lumberjack Show, and in all lumberjack competitions, aren’t purchased at a local hardware store. Axes preferred by the professional competitors are made in New Zealand or Australia. When asked why his chopping axe had to make such a long journey to get into his hands, Sam Fenton, manager of Scheer’s Lumberjack Show and a competitor in the underhand chop event at the Lumberjack World Championships, responds – “SHARP!”
an accurate swing of the axe. It demonstrates the primitive method of climbing a tree that was used to get above the fanning root system at the butt. Using his axe, the lumberjack notches a vertical standing log and wedges a board into the notch. The lumberjack then climbs up onto the board and chops a vertical-standing log in half. This is very dangerous because the lumberjack is chopping six feet in the air on a very narrow board. Strength, accuracy and balance combine to prevent an accident and make the lumberjack a winner. These and eight other events are featured in Scheer’s Lumberjack Shows in Woodruff and Hayward. The show is educational and combines athleticism with comedy for a great family adventure.
The axe has to be extremely sharp and able to hold an edge. Sam explains that it costs about $100 to get his axe sharpened and after it’s done he could use it to shave his face – really. Lumberjacks combine that edge with physical strength in two of the events featured in Scheer’s Lumberjack Shows. In the Underhand Chop the lumberjack stands on top of a platform called a log dog and straddles a 12” aspen log between his legs. He then chops the log in half with swings of the axe, being very careful to avoid his feet and legs. Accuracy prevents him from losing a toe and upper body strength will make him a winner. The Spring Board Chop is an interesting event that also requires

No sweat! Nicolet WheelA-Way takes it easy THREE LAKES – Ever since the invention of the wheel, man(and woman)kind have been looking to go places. And you won’t find a better place to put the wheels in motion than Three Lakes, home of the Nicolet Wheel-A-Way Bike Ride held each autumn. This year’s 23rd annual ride starts at 9:20am, Saturday, Aug. 30 and it ends at around 3pm. Check-in for advance registered (Active.com) and non-registered riders is from 7:30-9am at Don Burnside Park, Hwy. A and Stanzil Road, just west of downtown Three Lakes. Coffee, juice and cookies will be available at registration. Riders will receive a t-shirt and a chance to win great door prizes, including a new bike. Ride options are an 18-mile or a 36-mile route, which will be well marked and on paved roads that go through pristine forests and pass breathtaking lakes that make up the Nicolet-Chequamegon National Forest. Wheel-A-Way welcomes families as it’s not a race, but one taken at the rider’s own speed. Bikes pulling trailers are welcome. An adult must accompany children and helmets are required for all. SAG wagon support will be provided by local EMTs to assist with medical situations. Bicycle transport will be available for any rider unable to finish the ride. Riders should carry their own air pump, spare tube and tools. Restroom facilities will be available at the registration location, mid-route and at the lunch location.
Three Lakes has many unique resorts, quiet cottages and comfortable motels to make this a weekend get-away. For more information, contact the Three Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce at 715-546-3344 or 800-972-6103 or e-mail: vacation@ threelakes.com

AMERY to DRESSER – The Stower Seven Lakes State Trail offers a rich variety of scenery and wildlife as it meanders some 14 miles from downtown Amery toward its ultimate destination just south of Dresser. It’s a perfect trail destination for summer bikers and hikers, especially families. The trail is named after Amery’s own Harvey and Marilyn Stower. Harvey Stower served in the Wisconsin Legislature and as mayor of Amery for many years. The trail has great natural beauty and wildlife as it passes by the seven lakes of Lotus Lake, Horse Lake, Round Lake, Big Lake, Kinney Lake, North Twin Lake and South Twin Lake. Among the wildlife you will see are the sandhill cranes to the north between the 4/5 mile marker and the pileated woodpeckers and partridge at the 7/8 mile marker. Trumpeter swans can be sighted near Kinney Lake. The trail is fairly level grade with a limestone surface. It is suitable for bicyclists, walkers and joggers. The smooth limestone surface makes most of this trail accessible to wheelchair users. Trail passes for biking are required for all persons 16 years and older. In the winter months, the ungroomed trail is open to cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Built on a former railroad track, the trail begins in Soo Line Park in downtown Amery on Keller Avenue. As it leaves Amery, it travels through Deronda, Wanderoos and Nye, ending about one mile from Dresser on 90th Avenue. From Dresser, you can take County Highway F, turn south on County Highway MM and then east on 90th Avenue. The trail starts near Lotus Lake. ATVs, snowmobiles and other motorized vehicles are prohibited on the Stower Seven Lakes State Trail. Trail passes for biking or cross-country skiing are available at Amery Pedal Paddle Ski, Amery Countryside Convenience Store, UWWanderoos Bar and Grill, Russell’s Sport N’ Bike in Star Prairie, the Nye Store, Little Store in Dresser and the Polk County Information Center in St. Croix Falls.

Both spring-fed lakes exceed depths of 30 feet and boast bass and panfish. A public fishing pier and beach are located on the 20-acre Bass Lake. There are about 10 other spring-fed lakes nearby. Birkie Trek offers five events
CABLE and HAYWARD – The Birkie Trail Run, Relay & Trek on Saturday, Sept. 27 includes an individual half-marathon, 3- and 6-person marathon team relay, 5K fun run/walk, and a halfmarathon “Birkie Trek” Nordic walk, all on the world-famous Birkie Trail at a colorful time of the year.
The marathon team relay is handicapped based on age and gender. The Birkie Trek is a fast growing event where participants walk with poles, although poles are not required. The event includes a finish line party with music, food and beverages. There are awards, many door prizes and custom t-shirts for all participants. More info is available at 715-634-5025 or at birkie.com Now for die-hard trail and singletrack runners they have added sections of singletrack to the marathon and half-marathon courses. These singletrack sections are part of the CAMBA trail system, one of the best in the nation and the singletrack capital of the Midwest. The Birkie Trail itself has enough roots and rocks to keep it interesting. But for runners looking to break free from the roads, it is a great crossover and introduction to trail running. The main course is 30 feet wide, grass covered, and mowed, with a bike path down the middle to keep those sections fast. There is plenty of room to pass on the uphills, downhills and flats. Also new this year is that all events start and finish at the new Birkie Ridge trailhead, right off Hwy. 63, just two miles north of Seeley. Starting here puts you on some of the best parts of the Birkie Trail and singletrack.

It takes a village HAYWARD -- At Scheers Lumberjack Village, located on Hwy. B, one-half mile east of Hayward, a talented and diverse team of individuals coordinates efforts to provide guests with hours of fun at one location. The Lumberjack Village, owned by Fred Scheer, is the venue for his Lumberjack Shows, a quintessential northern Wisconsin attraction since 1981. Here a visitor can watch world-class athletes perform 10 of the same events that are part of the Lumberjack World Championships. An elite skier, world champion log roller and boom runner, and inline skate and mountain bike enthusiast, Fred Scheer exemplifies the varied talents and interests of Hayward’s residents as well as its visitors. Though Mr. Scheer has a high energy level, he does not personally manage all the shops and amenities at the Lumberjack Village. Those who do, bring an even broader collection of interests and talents to the team. Linda Fenton, owner of the Namekagon Cone ice cream shop located in the Lumberjack Village, was the Iditarod’s Teacher on the Trail in 2013. Sue Scheer, owner of Mainstream Boutique in the Lumberjack Village, serves the world’s cross-country skiing community as the president of the American Birkebeiner board. Josh Passolt, the Lumberjack Show announcer, is a star hockey player and captain of his high school team in Maple Grove, Minn. When one’s inner dinner bell rings, by far the most popular professional in the Lumberjack Village is Corey Elliott, chef at the River Deck Restaurant, located right next to the Lumberjack Show grandstand. Corey holds a culinary arts degree from the Art Institute International of Minnesota and has earned a reputation locally for his innovative and eclectic cuisine. The restaurant’s menu features unique and flavorful salads and sandwiches that combine fresh ingredients and local products. The menu expands in the evenings to include five dinner entrees and every week Corey creates a featured entrée to add to diners’ enjoyment. The restaurant offers cocktails, beer and a selection of fine wine. When in Hayward, plan a stop at Scheer’s Lumberjack Village where you can experience fabulous food at the River Deck, followed by Wisconsin’s best ice cream at the Namekagon Cone. Ladies can browse in the Mainstream Boutique. And everyone will enjoy world-class entertainment at a Lumberjack Show and a round of golf at the Lumberjack Village Mini-Golf.

Colorama time is here! Communities celebrate bounty of harvest VARIOUS COMMUNITIES – Something magical is happening in the forests and woods of the Northwoods. It’s Colorama time -- a name we mere mortals apply to the colorful tapestry that Mother Nature weaves from maples, oaks, willows, birch and other trees. Leaves and certain lowland bushes shed their green wardrobes and stride down the forest catwalk in dazzling red, orange and yellow pronouncements. The green leaf holdouts on some trees are simple reminders that this was another great summer for us to enjoy. Before we know it, the landscape will be covered in snow, the lakes will be frozen and it will be time to bring out the winter toys – sleds, skates, skis, snowmobiles and ice fishing equipment. But that’s all still in the future, and now is the time to enjoy the fall color, harvest some late fall fishing trophies and visit the splendid fall festivals popping up across the Northwoods. If your autumn destination is Vilas County – and it should be – you will delight in the numerous festivals that celebrate the fall harvest, especially cranberries. It’s harvest time so pick one or a couple from our crop of August and September festivals and spend a weekend Up North! Saturday, Aug. 9 Conover – Oktoberfest, 5-9:30pm at the Conover Town Park. Enjoy polka music and more by Jim Pekol and His Orchestra, food and beverages, paddle wheel and 50-50 raffles. Admission is $5 per person. The Conover Chamber of Commerce sponsors the festival. Enter the Greater WI Muskie Tournament
ST. GERMAIN – Serious anglers are pretty much in agreement -- the waters in and around St. Germain host some of the best musky fishing in the Midwest, if not the nation. Whether it’s Big St. Germain or a smaller lake, you can hear the cries: “Net! Net! Get the net! It’s a big one!” Fellow anglers close by will motor over to watch the action, the triumphant display of the toothy creature, and then the careful release of it over the side of the boat so the monster can live. Get in the action yourself – with a chance to win trophies, door prizes and raffle prizes – by entering the 26th annual Greater Wisconsin Muskie Tournament (GWMT) the weekend of Oct. 4-5. Each angler gets an event hat and a lure, and each angler has the opportunity to win one of the three $500 cash drawings. The St. Germain Chamber of Wisconsin sponsors the event. Entry deadline is Sept. 26, but you can register online until Oct. 1. Entry fee is $60 per person. Go to st-germain.com and follow the tournament link for a registration form or stop in at the chamber office. Call the chamber at 715-477-2205 for details. The tournament encompasses 10 lakes, including the aforementioned Big St. Germain. Others are Little St. Germain, Lost, Found, Pickerel, Big Arbor Vitae, Dam, Plum, Little Arbor Vitae and Sand. By the way, Lost is where Brian Johnson “found” his 48.0-inch GWMT winner last year. He literally “inched” out James Martin, who caught a 47.0-incher out of Pickerel. A 48inch fish has taken the top prize in four of the last six years.

Need an adventure?
Canoe, kayak or tube the scenic Namekagon or St. Croix River TREGO – Create your own summer adventure with a trip down the scenic Namekagon River or the St. Croix River. The 95-mile long Namekagon (pronounced NAM-uh-KAH-gun) is the main tributary of the St. Croix River. Together they make up the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway, and, as such, their beauty is protected forever. Perfect for summer waterway cruises, the Namekagon is a narrow, twisty river that unfolds new scenery – and maybe an eagle or blue heron – around each bend. Water levels are good all summer on the 70-mile stretch from Hayward to Riverside landings. The river is 2- to 4-feet deep most of the way and is excellent for swimming. One of the most trusted and experienced outfitters you will find here is Jack’s Canoe & Tube Rental, in Trego (look for the bright orange canoe signs). Jack’s has been in operation since 1967 and has helped countless individuals, families and groups experience a quality time on the two rivers. Trips can be planned
for a couple hours, overnight or even several days. Their various rental options include tubes, canoes, SUPS and kayaks as well as primitive camping right at Jack’s. Equipment and life jackets, paddles and shuttle service are included in the rental packages. The shuttle service goes to all the Namekagon and most of the St. Croix River landings, as well as pick-up from local resorts and cabins for a hassle-free outing. At Jack’s Scoop & General Store, treats such as hand-dipped ice cream and candy are available along with gifts, toys, apparel such as T’s and water shoes, and home décor selections. Enjoy your cone as you take a short walk to the old iron wagon bridge, a popular swimming, picnic and gathering hotspot in the summer. SPOONER – The Railroad Memories Museum in Spooner contains a treasure-trove of artifacts, railroad equipment, photographs and other memorabilia from the days when a piercing whistle would announce the arrival of a steampowered locomotive pulling either freight or passenger cars. The museum is housed in the historic 1902 Chicago & Northwestern Railway Depot, 424 Front Street. Among the hundreds of items housed in the 12 rooms of the museum is a velocipede – a hand-powered vehicle that railroad workers used to inspect the tracks for damage or misalignment. Smartly arranged throughout the rooms are original railroad art, brochures, advertising and antiques. The library and video room are open for viewing. The main entry room houses 1930s and ’40s-era Spooner rail yard diorama, models, bells, whistles and history of the building. In the telegraph room can be found communication links, and in the art room are original art and railroad watches. The large collection includes uniforms, tools, books, train interiors, lanterns, signals and videos.
