Editor’s COLUMN Enjoy winter’s many blessings
If you define winter as cold and unforgiving, then you’re missing out on a lot of fun! That’s especially true in the Northwoods where you can hardly keep up with the many activities and beauty that winter brings to residents and visitors each week.
Dean S. Acheson
Take a moment to picture yourself gliding along a cross-country ski trail, the sun flashing through the stately pines, the crispness in the air and perhaps the sight of a white-tailed deer surprised by your silent approach. Have you tried nighttime XC skiing? We have several facilities that offer it, including Schlect Lake Park in Minocqua and Timberland West near Cumberland. Or if it’s fast and furious action you crave, then snowmobile races in any number of locales will keep you on your feet as you cheer favorites to the finish line. Modern and vintage sleds race at Eagle River during the World Championship Snowmobile Derby in January; another big one is the Wausau 525, which also offers vintage and modern sled racing; others can found elsewhere in the Northwoods.
Snowmobile enthusiasts can’t stop raving about our snowmobile trails and amenities found along them. Riders will find nicely groomed trails, comfortable lodging and good eats. The Northwoods has several quality downhill ski facilities with challenging runs and more sedate, learning curves for the novice or younger set. The ski hills are within a few hours drive so you spend more time on the slopes and keep more of the green in the wallet versus traveling out West. Simply said, enjoy packed snow instead of packed lines. Let’s not forget about “hard water” fishing. When that little red flag “boings” on the tip-up, there’s a mad dash to the fishing hole, a few anxious moments of “let the fish eat the minnow,” and then frantic hand-over-hand pulling of the black line. When the 30-inch northern pike flops on the ice, then it’s “high fives’ all around. We’re blessed to live in the land they call “Up North.”

Timberland West features 2.5 KM lighted XC ski loop
Trails in both areas are groomed and maintained by the non-profit Cumberland Ski Touring Association (CASTA), which welcomes visitors to explore their trails. The complex is located on Hwy. H, nine miles northwest of Cumberland. Their ASV Trac Truck pulls a nine-foot custom-built Tidd Tech groomer to groom the wide trails all at once. Timberland Hills showcases 24 km of trails meandering through 2,400 acres of Burnett County. From gentle rolling terrain to the screaming hills of “The Ridge Run” and the “Outer Loop,” Timberland Hills offers fun and excitement for the beginning skier to the expert. Timberland West is a 2.5 km lighted ski trail located 1.5 miles south of its bigger brother. The trail (down and back) wanders through 500 acres of Barron Couanty forestland featuring gently rolling terrain and one small hill. Ideal for beginners and families, the trail is automatically lighted from dusk until approximately 11 p.m. This machined groomed trail is about 30 feet wide with tracks around the perimeter and a wide skating lane down the middle.
CUMBERLAND – Situated on either side of the county line of Barron and Burnett counties is the cross-country ski trail complex consisting of Timberland Hills and Timberland West.
Family and single memberships as well as donation boxes (at trailheads and at the warming house) enable CASTA to buy equipment and fund maintenance of trails. During the skiing season you can call their hotline at 715-822-3727 to find out about trail conditions. Their website is timberlandhills.com.

Trail maps are available at many local businesses and at the Cable Area Chamber office. E-mail info@cable4fun.com with your name and mailing address to receive a new map! Since maps and routes change on a yearly basis, be sure you have the most accurate information.
CABLE -- The Cable area boasts more than 1,200 miles of interconnecting snowmobile trail systems, making it one of the largest trail systems in the U.S. Uncrowded trails and the solitude of the Chequamegon National Forest bring snowmobilers back again and again to the Cable area.
To be added to the Cable Area Snowmobile Trail Report email the chamber at officecoordinator@cable4fun.com with your name and e-mail address included in the text. We send out weekly eblasts with current conditions or as conditions change. The chamber receives trail reports from the Namakagon Trail Groomers, Drummond Sno Jacks and Runamuk Rides, all of whom check trail conditions daily.
The trails give any snowmobiler an exhilarating outdoor experience. The interconnecting trail systems allow riders to travel from location to location on the lakes and trails without having to trailer their machines. The Cable area system connects with the surrounding county trails and the Tri-County Corridor trail running from Minnesota to Michigan.
Non-resident trail use stickers are required on all snowmobiles and ATVs not currently registered in Wisconsin. Wardens and other law enforcement personnel patrol the trails, so be sure to be current with sled registration or trail use stickers. Funds from this program are used to enhance all Wisconsin snowmobile recreation. The $35 trail passes are available at area businesses.
Downhill skiing, snowboarding & XC skiing offered at Kettlebowl Ski Area BRYANT – The Kettlebowl Ski Area is a publicly owned facility providing great slope opportunities for downhill skiers and skateboarders along with a cross-country ski trail. Featuring five ski runs, the winter sports area is located at a kettle hole moraine in the Crocker Hills on Hwy. 52 about 15 miles northeast of Antigo. Hours generally are noon to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday and during holidays from Christmas through March. The slopes are machine-groomed with the longest of the runs listed at 1,420 feet, and with a vertical drop of about 200 feet. The facility includes five towropes, plenty of parking, concessions, and a new chalet with indoor restrooms and a large warming area featuring a panoramic view of the slope. Food is available for purchase.
The hill was transformed into a ski facility in 1956. Today, volunteers of the Langlade County Ski Club operate the facility allowing prices to remain rock bottom: $4 for adults, $3 for ages 13-18, $2 for ages 6-12, and free for children under six. It’s a very family oriented facility where youngsters can learn to ski (there’s a “baby” hill) without being overwhelmed by masses of skiers. Food is available for purchase. Kettlebowl Cross-Country Ski Trail This 4.3-mile long trail located at the Kettlebowl Ski Area includes three loops. The topography includes high ridges and rolling hills. The first part of the trail is a gradual climb followed by a loop along the Ice Age Trail and highlighted at the end by an exciting downhill run. Facilities include a parking area, restrooms and a warming shelter with concessions. The vast forests featuring hills, kettles, and unmatched scenery makes Langlade County a great destination for cross-country skiing. There are three public cross-country ski trails in the county in addition to the Kettlebowl trail, but you can also create your own trails anywhere on county forestlands.

Nordic Skiing WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS January 23-Feb 1, Cable Wisconsin
CABLE – Cable will host the 2015 IPC Nordic Skiing World Championships Jan. 23 to Feb. 1 that will attract upwards of 150 elite athletes from 20 countries, according to the International Paralympic Committee. The venue for the IPC World Championships will be the Telemark trail system in Cable, a town internationally known for being the starting point of the American Birkebeiner cross-country skiing marathon or “Birkie,” which ends on Main Street in Hayward. The IPC championships will use part of this legendary course. Cable 2015 will represent the biggest gathering of elite athletes since the Sochi 2014 Paralympic Games. Cable was the venue also of the 2012 and 2013 IPC World Cups. The Central Cross Country Ski Association (CXC) is organizing Cable 2015. The World Championships feature both the cross-country races of various lengths -- individual sprints and team relays -- and the biathlon over eight days of intense competition. Powerhouses Russia, Japan and Norway will look to continue their dominance in the Nordic events. But U.S. stars Tatyana McFadden and Oksana Masters will look to improve on their medal performances in Sochi, Russia. Canadian biathlon world champion Mark Arendz will compete at Cable 2015, according to reports. For more information on the teams and competition, visit paralympic.org. All races and ceremonies for Cable 2015 are free and open to the
public. The Championship venue will have multiple grandstands spread over most portions of the course with the primary focus in and around the stadium area. The stadium area will also have allocated wheelchair spaces. The course layout provides several areas to observe the Championships along the race course. These viewing points will accommodate both standing and wheelchair spectators but deep snow may limit chair accessibility. Seating will operate on a first-come first-served basis. The Cable 2015 spectator venue will be comprised of catering, merchandise, information and activity booths providing you with a chance to grab a bite to eat or drink and pick up a souvenir of this fantastic event. Souvenirs and food are also available throughout the Cable area as well Awards Ceremonies Leave Cable heading east on Highway M 13.2km to Lakewoods Resort on left. Ceremonies will take place each evening at 5pm (UTC) on the pond adjacent to the lodge. Parking There will be designated parking spaces at the Championship venue on a first-come, first-served basis. There is no charge for parking. Limited accessible parking will be available on site. Users must have their blue badge clearly visible for eligibility. Directions Leave Cable heading east on Highway M for 2.4km. Turn right on Telemark Road and continue on road until you arrive at the Championship venue (just over 3km). Competition The competition is divided into three categories of disability. 1) Sit Ski. These athletes compete in a specially adapted chair mounted to a set of skis. These athletes may or may not have prosthetic limbs but they compete while sitting in the sit ski. 2) Standing Limb Impaired. These athletes are often missing a portion of a limb or have a prosthesis that allows them to compete while standing and wearing skis. 3) Visually Impaired. These athletes have various levels of visual disability and ski with the use of a guide. The guide typically skis in front of the competitor and shouts instructions to the visually impaired skier, usually with the use of a microphone and speaker worn on their back. The guide is not allowed to make physical contact with the competitor at any time. The visually impaired Biathlon competitors use a ‘laser’ rifle that does not shoot a projectile. The competitor wears a set of headphones that alter their pitch tone based on how close the competitor is to the bull’s-eye. WANT TO VOLUNTEER? Forest Langlade Jack Lake XC Ski Trail: Glacial activity created great scenery ANTIGO – The Yukon Territory Loop with its many steep hills and sharp turns will challenge even veteran cross-country skiers traveling to the Jack Lake Area Cross-country Ski Trail in Langlade County. But Yukon Territory is only one of several loops contained within the 15-mile trail that carves its way through hardwoods and aspen woods of this county forest. The trail is courtesy of Langlade County Forestry & Recreation Department; the beautiful scenery is the result of glacial activity thousands of years ago. The trail system is designed to accommodate all skiing abilities and ages. For instance, the Green Thump Loop is a beginner’s loop with only a few gentle hills. Other loops fall between Yukon and Green Thump in difficulty. The groomed and tracked trail offers eight loops of both traditional and skating style skiing. It passes through pine and spruce forests as well as bogs and other wetlands. Glacial features of the area include terminal moraines and drumlins. Parking is off Highway J where the Green Thumb Loop begins. A donation box is also located here. Donations help offset the costs of grooming, tracking and equipment purchase. Restrooms
Time to hit the XC ski trails COUNTY-WIDE – Cross-country skiers in Forest County can enjoy some 40 miles of groomed XC trails with variations suited just for beginners on up to technical trails to challenge the experts. There are 12 miles of groomed loop trails ranging from gentle, rolling to hilly terrain. Otter Springs Trail, Forest County Forestry Dept.: This trail is located 4 miles east of Crandon off Hwy. 8 on Forest Road 2378. Located in a large area of hardwood forest, the trail offers a scenic view of Otter Springs and Bug Lake. Just a mile south of the X-C ski trail system is Veterans Memorial Park where the Jack Lake Trails can be found. The trails are a favorite of snowshoers and hikers. Directions: Approximately 12 miles north of Antigo on Hwy. 45, then east on County J for 2 miles to the Junction of Pence lake Road and the road to Veterans Memorial Park. Other ski trails in the county are Kettlebowl Ski Hill, Gartzke Flowage, and Moccasin Lake Road ski trail. For more information call the county Forestry & Rec Department at (715) 627-6300. The intermediate trails consist of a 1.25-mile segment and the third is a 3-mile loop with more hills and curves than the others. Don’t miss the fun at Cruiserfest 2015
MINOCQUA – Snowmobile radar runs, a snowmobile parade, food and drinks, and the famous bikini races will greet thousands of people at the 2015 Cruiserfest set for Friday and Saturday, Feb. 6 & 7 on the ice of Lake Minocqua.
against the radar gun to see how fast their sled can run. Some sleds can easily break the 100 mph mark, while the big runners of the track can exceed 130 mph and more! Cash prizes and trophies are awarded for the fastest speed in each class.
The 15th annual snowmobile festival is a time-honored tradition of having fun in the Northwoods, all presented by the Cross Country Cruisers Snowmobile Club.
The bikini race is the major attraction in the afternoon. The gals have fundraised for a charity and at 2pm each will open the throttle on their favorite sled for a run down the track. Awards for top speed and most pledged amount will be presented.
The event kicks off on Friday night with activities planned from 6-8pm on the lake. Everyone is invited to join the snowmobile parade, which will start at 6pm from Stack’s Bay en route to the Aqua Bowl (in front of the Thirsty Whale and The Boat House). The Aqua Bowl is where you can find festival style food – brats, hamburgers and beverages – along with music and dancing, all in the huge, heated Cruiser tent on the ice. A bonfire will illuminate the grounds and keep those outside toasty warm. The Cruisers always put on a nice fireworks show at this event (set for 7pm). Come Saturday, the action heats up with 30 classes of radar runs on the 600-foot hard pack and the 1,000-foot shaved ice track beginning at 10:30am. The St. Germain Radar Racers organizes and runs the radar runs. For a small fee, riders get three runs
Breakfast and lunch (chili, brats, burgers again) will be served in the Cruiser tent. There will be groomer rides – a kids’ favorite – along with snowmobile and equipment vendors and displays, a swap meet (sell your ATV or sled), silent auction, raffles, and a vintage snowmobile display. Enjoy New Year’s Eve fireworks in Woodruff
WOODRUFF – It’s called the “Red Hot New Year’s Eve Celebration,” but we think you’ll agree that it’s pretty cool too! The annual fireworks show – and more -- takes place Wednesday, Dec. 31 at the Woodruff Community Center grounds. Activities start with all day sledding and ice skating and free, horse-drawn wagon rides (3:30-6:30pm). Inside the community center beginning at 5pm, you can purchase hot chili, hot dogs, hot chocolate and hot cider (now we now why it’s called “Red Hot”). Proceeds will benefit the Woodruff beautification fund. There will be kids crafts inside also, and party favors for everyone, all sponsored by the Town of Woodruff. Then be sure to be outside at 7pm for the fireworks display, sponsored by the Town of Woodruff and the Minocqua Area Chamber of Commerce. Reminders: Get there early because the fireworks show attracts a lot of people and the streets get busy with vehicular traffic. It also is held on the cusp of January and some years it’s been downright bone-chilling cold! Dress the kids and yourself warmly. Camera batteries drain quickly in cold temps, so keep the camera inside your coat until the fireworks begin.

WELCOME TO THE 52nd RUNNING OF THE AMSOIL WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP SNOWMOBILE DERBY
A
t the Derby we continually strive to give the Fans the best show possible, the racers the best track possible, and our sponsors the most for their money. Each year there’s something new at the AMSOIL World Championship Snowmobile Derby that the rest of the snowmobile race world copies. One of the things you’ll see this year will be on Saturday at completion of the sno-cross racing, the sno-cross track will be” knocked down” to allow unrestricted viewing of Sunday’s oval finals. Also you’ll see some of the top Champ teams testing a “broom” system on their sleds in an effort to help control the ice dust. This will help driver visibility and provide better and safer racing
conditions. With the help of Travis Gavinski of Divas SnowGear and Barry Braun of XSAN TV, we are taking social media and live streaming television to a whole new level. Last but not least, we have teamed – up with Channel 7, CBS out of Wausau, Wisconsin, and they will be shooting live TV as well as producing a one hour show to be broadcast in prime time. Sit back, have fun, enjoy the racing and be a part of snowmobiling history. Chuck Decker #04

Derby Track to host world-class snowmobile racers EAGLE RIVER – The AMSOIL World Championship Snowmobile Derby presented by First Place Parts.com is about a complete package of oval and sno-cross racing as you will find anywhere, and like the name says, world champions are crowned here in Eagle River. It’s not a far reach to call it the Indianapolis 500 of snowmobile racing. More than 500 racers, 1,400 plus entries in dozens of oval and sno-cross classes and tens of thousands of fans turn this small northern Wisconsin city into a frenzy of snowmobile racing utopia each January. As has been the case the past several years, the 2015 Derby Week is really the story about two eras – vintage/classic sleds and their modern day counterparts – both with their unique weekends to race for the checkers. For many racers and fans, it’s all about just being at this hallowed ground for snowmobilers. Classic Vintage Weekend The enormously popular Vintage World Championships will take place the weekend of Jan. 9, 10 & 11. This extended weekend has been drawing close to 1,000 entries for the past three years. For three days the classic machines of the ’60s and ’70s put on a show from the golden days of racing. Gates open daily at 9am Time trials begin at 9am Friday, followed by WC qualifying and then qualifying in all classes. Additional qualifying continues Saturday with the Vintage World Championship qualifying run at 2pm. Then on Sunday, finals in all classes are run concluding with the Vintage World Championship race at 3pm AMSOIL World Championship Snowmobile Derby The 52nd running of the Derby championships will take place Jan. 15-18. Snowmobile race fans will see incredible racing action with the likes of young guns Malcom Chartier (2013 & 2014 champion), Nick Van Strydonk and PJ Wanderscheid challenging long-time veterans including Matt Schulz and Gary Moyle for the checkered flag in the premier race on Sunday afternoon. An improved four-day race schedule is designed to please fans and racers alike. Gates open at 9am daily. There will be racing all day Thursday, rather than the late afternoon start that has been the previous format, with both sno-cross and ice oval qualifying. Under the new format sno-cross will race Thursday and Friday with the sno-cross World Championships running in First Place Parts’ popular Friday Night Thunder.
Oval contenders hoping to make it to Sunday’s finals will again run timed qualifying on Thursday and compete during Friday Night Thunder presented by First Place Parts.com in the “Sweet Sixteen” for pole position. With all sno-cross racing being completed by Saturday, this will allow knocking down the sno-cross course and flattening the corners providing for unobstructed viewing of the ice oval racing on Sunday. Saturday’s action includes oval qualifying & Sno-X finals. The AMSOIL World Championship qualifying takes place at 2:30pm. All oval finals take place Sunday with the World Championship race at 3pm. Another move, this one to create safer racing conditions will be the Derby’s endorsement of T.J. Patrick’s “snow brush.” Racers will be encouraged to use these ski and track brushes to reduce snow dust, a serious vision impediment for racers. Other elements All elements of what makes the Derby the biggest snowmobile race on the planet will be in place. That includes the large indoor and outdoor vendor area with exceptional buys on all sorts of snowmobile items. The new Loft provides sit-down food service with an overview of the Expo Hall activity. The Derby has a social side too. People like to take advantage of a torch light ride to the Eagle River Hockey Dome, guided by the local Sno-Eagles Snowmobile Club. Fans also enjoy the “ring presentation” on Saturday night when the Top Ten Championship qualifiers receive their special rings. At Sunday night’s Victory Banquet, fans can see their favorite drivers receiving trophies and the “winners jackets” provided by Fly Racing. “The Derby – much, much more than just a race”
T
he AMSOIL World Championship Snowmobile Derby….is much more than just another race. It’s truly a racing extravaganza and a huge snowmobile “Happening”.
Racing at the Derby is not all on the oval or the sno-cross course inside the ice oval constraints. A special track is constructed on the grounds for the Junior 120 Class contingent and these kids put on a show.
The Derby track complex adds much to this 52-year-old event. There are indoor ”Hot Seats” on the front straight-a-way, for comfortable heated viewing, beverage service, closed circuit TV and restrooms. Fifteen corporate suites on the ends of the track, and a Jumbotron keep fans abreast of all that’s happening, along with sponsor messages, live streaming action and replays. Fans enjoy the large Derby Expo Hall with a multitude of vendors offering “Super Buys” on a variety of snowmobile items. They really appreciate the Last Lap Saloon where you can get your favorite beverage. A recent addition to the Derby is the sit down Bar & Restaurant – the Loft - which provides seating with an overview of the vendor display area, while you eat some fantastic Derby food and enjoy your favorite beverage in the comfort of a heated lounge area, where flat screen TV’s keep you abreast of the action on the track. There’s a lot of “social life” at the Derby, like a Torch Light Parade of snowmobiles from the track to the famed “Dome” ice arena for the traditional Eagle River Falcons hockey game with rival Mosinee. Everyone stops by the “Ice Castle” for a picture. There’s a Top Ten Ring Presentation on Saturday night, a chance to see the Championship contenders without helmets. Sunday night is celebration time in the Derby Expo Hall as the vendors have moved out and tables fill the room for a banquet dinner and trophy presentation where we encourage fans to come for a great meal and a chance to rub elbows with the true warriors of winter.

Get ready for the Wausau 525 Snowmobile Championships WAUSAU – Some of the biggest names in snowmobile ice oval racing will compete at the Wausau 525 Snowmobile Championship on Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 24-25, just a week after the AMSOIL World Snowmobile Championships are decided in Eagle River. The professional drivers will vie for the Wausau 525 Cups and TLR Cup points. Malcolm Chartier, who claimed the 2014 World Championship title at Eagle River, also took first place in the Champ 440 championship race last year at this track. Other familiar names in that race included Dustin Wahl, Nick Van Strydonk, Matt Schultz and Jordan Wahl. The track runs numerous classes, including Kitty Cats, Novice, Sportsman 600, Outlaw, Champ 440 and even motorcycles. Gates open at 9am with racing at 10am both Saturday and Sunday. This race – now in its 11th year -- is held in the memory of Philip “Flip” Merwin, who raced under No. 525, and who passed away in a tragic snowmobile accident at the Derby track in 2003. Proceeds from the Wausau 525 help support Flip’s Fund, a charity that supports local families with critically ill children,
student scholarships and several other like causes. The Wausau 525 is one of the most fan-friendly facilities and received the TLR Cup Track of the Year award for the 2013-14 season, as voted by the TLR Cup drivers. The one-third mile banked oval and the buildings were built just four years ago. Prior to that, the Wausau 525 Snowmobile Championship was held on Manmade Lake in Wausau. No longer having to contend with the whims of lake ice conditions, racers now have a consistent track with many safety features. The spectators get to enjoy the heated permanent exhibition building with all the amenities: food, beverages and heated seating. There is a heated bathroom facility and plenty of parking on site. Fans can also snowmobile to the track via the county snowmobile trails. Snowmobile parking and a helmet check are available and those arriving by snowmobile receive a $2 discount on admission. You can also catch more racing action at the Wausau 525 track Feb. 7 when the vintage racers come out to compete. For more information on both weekends of racing, visit wausau525.com.

PRESQUE ISLE – Nature lover and recreation enthusiasts have a lot to discover and enjoy in Presque Isle, a place called “Wisconsin’s Last Wilderness.” The quaint town lies within the Northwoods, more specifically in the forest and glacial lake country that comprises Vilas County. More than 77 square miles of pine and hardwood forests, lakes and streams in the county draws thousands of visitors each year, but with that much land and water, it doesn’t feel crowded at all. The Last Wilderness is immediately adjacent to Michigan’s sprawling Ottawa National Forest and back in Wisconsin, within the 200,000 plus acres of the Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest! Truly a four-season recreation paradise, Presque Isle enjoys a long winter due to its proximity to Lake Superior’s “lake effect” snow. Visitors can get a head start on snowmobiling adventures on hundreds of miles of miles marked and groomed trails that meander through beautiful forests and across pristine frozen lakes. Located at the hub of a major snowmobile system, riders can spend a week and explore a different trail each day! That much snow means cross-country and snowshoers aren’t forgotten either. Discover a groomed trail or “bushwhack” your way across the landscape. Ice fishermen won’t run out of lakes to fish, even if they visit a new lake every day during their stay!
Coupled with hospitality second to none, great eats at restaurants and taverns, and cozy lodges, Presque Isle is the ideal destination for a day-trip, vacation, girls getaway or a romantic trip.

ST. GERMAIN – See why the “Ride with the Champs” snowmobile tour has been a favorite for riders for over three decades by signing up for the 2015 edition set for Saturday, Feb. 7. In addition to the all-day riding experience, you will get to attend the Hall of Fame induction ceremony that night in St. Germain. This is an equal opportunity event as vintage sleds are welcomed to join the modern sleds on guided tours. The will be several ride groups: two vintage, two late model groups and a new, mixed group called the “Swamp Challenge” that will take a southern route to Tomahawk area. One vintage sled group makes up the “Vintage Challenge, which runs to Lake Gogebic in the UP for lunch. Traveling with them is a group of modern sled drivers headed to Fish Tales, also in the UP. More than 100 riders, some from hundreds of miles away, make this an annual pilgrimage to the Northwoods. Presented by the Modine Hot Dawg Garage Heaters, the 32nd annual Ride includes a morning visit to the Snowmobile Hall of Fame Museum in St. Germain to see what’s new (in old sleds). In addition to a large collection of snowmobiles, memorabilia and photos, the HOF has a gift shop. As the name says, Ride with the Champs allows everyday snowmobilers to mingle and chat with legendary racers and upcoming ones from the snowmobile fraternity as well as those

Discover why, as one participant has written on his blog, “how one fun event transitions into another.” To register and for more information, visit snowmobilehalloffame.com or call 715-542-4463. The HOF induction banquet (4 will be honored) takes place that night at the Whitetail Inn in St. Germain. It’s a time to hear stories from early snowmobile racing, along with the opportunity to get autographs from those racers. You don’t have to ride that day to attend the induction ceremony. Footnote: If you can’t make this ride, be sure to purchase ticket(s) for the Snowmobile HOF’s sled raffles. The grand prize to be drawn Feb. 7 is for a 2015 Ski Doo 600 Sport; the drawing for the 1976 Ski Do RV 250 will take place May 24 during the Classic Sled Roundup. Iron County
Michigan
Save up your snow days… and spend them here! Iron County is renown as one of the favorite destinations in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan to enjoy winter sports. Discover panorama views from top of a ski mountain. Become cloaked in the deep forest as the skinny skis whisper their way along a XC ski trail. Bring friends and family and discover the fabulously groomed snowmobile trails that lead to all directions. Later that evening, you will anxiously await that first bite into a hot, juicy tenderloin steak. And when the eyes finally surrender, it’s off to dreamland snuggled under the blankets at one of the lodging places. Pick a sport and enjoy!
Journey on a Scenic Snowmobile Trail
Iron County boasts more than 260 miles of extensively groomed and well-marked snowmobile trails, drawing riders from throughout the region and beyond to enjoy scenic journeys that are a trademark of trails here. The wide-open trails traverse abandoned railroad beds, weave through wooded terrain and cross lakes for throttle pulsating runs.
Community organizations and chambers sponsor snowmobile derbies, winter festivals and races each season. In February, catch the exciting Mid American Championship Snowmobile Hill Climb. For trail reports call 906-265-7152 or 888-879-4766, or go to www. snowtracks.com/michigan/ironcounty. For trail maps and information on events, stop by at the Iron County Chamber of Commerce office (or call 888-TRY-IRON). Maps are also available at most gas stations and many local businesses. Or contact the South Central UP Snowmobile Council at osieger@fast-air.net. For more information on the two clubs, either write or call them at: The Iron Range Trail Club 11 W. Maple Iron River, MI 49935 906-265-7152
Iron County not only serves as a hub for local trails, but also gives added meaning to snowmobile paradise. Snowmobilers can tap into the vast network of trails in the Upper Peninsula and northern Wisconsin for extended riding adventures. Gas stations, restaurants, pit stops and lodging, as well as sled repair shops are all readily available and eager to provide top customer satisfaction. Snowfall totals are between 90 and 120 inches each season. The snowmobiling season officially opens Dec. 1 and closes March 31. The county trail system includes Amasa, Crystal Falls, Iron River, Sidnaw and Kenton areas. The county’s two snowmobile clubs, The Iron Range Trail Club and the Chippewa Snow-Kats, welcome new members and invite visiting snowmobilers to attend their club activities, including trail rides. The Iron Range Trail Club’s three Tucker groomers and drags are used to groom nearly 150 miles of trail at least twice a week during the season. The Chippewa Sno-Kats Snowmobile Club grooms and maintains about 100 miles of trail. The groomers perform a vital job! Without the groomers and the people who operate them, a snowmobile trail can become a bumpy endurance test. The groomers travel about 6 mph, and most of the runs last 12 to 14 hours round trip.
