Editor’s COLUMN Lots of winter fun in store for visitors My fortune-telling ball runs on batteries and of course they conked out just as I sat down to write my column for this issue. So I can’t tell you if the magical ice caves off Meyer’s Beach in far Bayfield County were deemed safe for visitors this winter. Last season’s ice caves became accessible after authorities said the lake ice provided safe travel. After being off limits for several years, the ice caves last winter drew a record number of visitors, in addition to national and even international coverage in the press. Travel writers sometimes are on thin ice themselves if they urge readers to visit an attraction that depends on the whims of Mother Nature and/or Old Man Winter. The Eagle River ice castle failed to materialize this year because ice on Dollar Lake was too thin when volunteers had scheduled the ice block construction. Indeed, as of this writing the famed LaBatt Blue/USA Hockey Pond was to have been moved off Dollar Lake to the World
Championship Snowmobile Derby Track Dean S. Acheson in Eagle River for the same reason. Another move, a successful one at that, was the relocation of Minocqua’s giant snowman from the Island of Minocqua to the chamber office just south of the bridge. It faces north, perhaps thanking everyone returning home for visiting the Northwoods. But rest assured despite the occasional cancellation or postponement, most events go on as scheduled. Major festivals have multiple activities so even if one event gets cancelled, there is plenty of other fun to be had. A quick check with the local chamber of commerce is also advised. Take a look inside of this issue of Action at the events that will surely delight you and your family on a visit to the land they call Up North.

Acheson CABLE – The 2015 “Hot Air for Hearts” Balloon Rally is another reason to escape the confines of the house – cabin fever – as spectators and participants enjoy some airborne wintery fun courtesy of Lakewoods Resort on Friday through Sunday, March 13-15. The Cable resort is also headquarters for the annual Braveheart Midwest Snowshoe Racing Championships on Saturday, March 15. Balloon flights will take place mornings and evenings on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and will fly as often as weather permits over the frozen lake. Crew members are eligible to ride along with the pilots. Flights are scheduled for 6:30am (when winds are usually the calmest) all three days and again 3pm Friday and Saturday.
Enjoy ‘Golf on Ice,’ Polar Plunge, candlelight ski/ snowshoe at IR IRON RIVER, WI – Iron River is a great winter destination with outstanding snowmobile trails, cross-country ski trails – the Afterhours Ski Trail comes to mind – and some zany activities to shake things up a bit. Enjoy an evening of free skiing or snowshoeing by candlelight on the National Fish Hatchery property located north of Iron
In addition to the balloon flights, a “glow” is scheduled to take place Friday and Saturday evening in front of the resort once darkness settles in. The tethered three-story balloons are inflated and glow with magical beauty each time the pilot ignites the propane burners. The balloon rally raises funds for the Cable Area Lions Heart Benefit. Saturday’s Braveheart series snowshoe races offers three separate races with a 10am start time on the golf course: 5K run/walk, 10K run/walk, and a mountaineering event. The latter requires a 15-pound pack or weighted vest. The Kid’s Kilo event will be held at noon. An awards ceremony and pasta buffet will follow at 4pm. Race registration is available on the website: lakewoodsresort.com.
River on Hwy. A. There will be a bonfire, marshmallows, hot chocolate and cider, but you need to bring your own equipment. The Feb. 21 event goes from 6-8pm. This is a fundraiser for the Iron River Food Shelf. A week later, on March 14, hardy souls will be gathering at Moon Lake Park for the annual Iron River Polar Plunge, starting at 11am. There will be hot dogs, marshmallows and hot chocolate served onsite with a toasty campfire. Sponsored by the police department and the chamber of commerce.

includes five towropes, plenty of parking, concessions, and a new chalet with indoor restrooms and a large warming area featuring a panoramic view of the slope. Food is available for purchase. The hill was transformed into a ski facility in 1956. Today, volunteers of the Langlade County Ski Club operate the facility allowing prices to remain rock bottom: $6 for adults, $3 for ages 13-18, $2 for ages 6-12, and free for children under six. It’s a very family oriented facility where youngsters can learn to ski (there’s a “baby” hill) without being overwhelmed by masses of skiers.
Kettlebowl Cross-Country Ski Trail This 4.3-mile long trail located at the Kettlebowl Ski Area includes three loops. The topography includes high ridges and rolling hills. The first part of the trail is a gradual climb followed by a loop along the Ice Age Trail and highlighted at the end by an exciting downhill run. Facilities include a parking area, restrooms and a warming shelter with concessions. The vast forests featuring hills, kettles, and unmatched scenery makes Langlade County a great destination for cross-country skiing. There are three public cross-country ski trails in the county in addition to the Kettlebowl trail, but you can also create your own trails anywhere on county forestlands.

Golf-on-ice benefit welcomes all skill levels MINOCQUA – The 13th annual “Best Ball” Ice Golf Tournament puts Old Man Winter on notice that his days are numbered because we are not, simply not going to succumb to “cabin fever.” We play a mean game of golf, and come Saturday, March 7, we plan to be out with the rest of the crazies doing our best for a hole in one on frozen Lake Minocqua. The 36-hole course will be laid out on the ice from the “Aqua Bowl” in front of The Thirsty Whale, under the Hwy. 51 bridge, past Albee’s Yacht Club and a ways down the straightaway of the lake. The two taverns jointly sponsor the tournament with all proceeds going to benefit local charities. Local businesses help in the effort by sponsoring each hole and contributing raffle prizes. By all means, those with moderate – or none at all – golf skills are welcome to join in the fun. The tournament is organized with four-person teams with each member having one club and one
Only Fools Run at Midnight MINOCQUA – Offhand, we’re not sure when the first “Fools Run” took place. Maybe when the royal court jester bombed with a really awful joke in some king’s court and had to flee for his life? We do know that the April 11, 2015 “Only Fools Run at Midnight” will be the ninth such event in Minocqua. There will be festivities leading up to and after the midnight run. The run typically attracts a thousand or more people; albeit last year’s foul weather dampened the turnout. But, hey, they still had lots of fun and so will you in this silly event no matter the weather. The fun begins at 8pm Saturday and ends at 2am the following morning, all at the Lakeland Union High School in Minocqua. Silly is one of the keywords here: yeah, the winners get their
photo by Dean S. Acheson tennis ball. Entry fee is $20 per person. There is a free meal for players after their round of golf along with lots of raffle prizes (raffles are open to spectators also). Registration begins at 11am with a shotgun start at noon. Upwards of 340 golfers have turned out for this event, with dozens of spectators. For more information, and to register in advance, stop at the Yacht Club (715-356-1366) or the Thirsty Whale (715-356-7108).
accolades, but it’s the crazy costumed folks that will draw the most applause. The usual Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman costumes are there, but also lots of other crazy getups. But now for some down to earth info: Both the 5K run/walk and 10K run are chip timed events with overall awards and medals in age divisions for serious runners. The course uses streets and the Bearskin State Recreation Trail. Entry fee is $30 for adults; $20 for those 18 and under ($2 off using online registration.) You can register by going to Minocqua.org and following the links. There’s a spaghetti dinner and sundae bar from 4-7pm at the American Legion Hall, open also to the general public. Onsite registration begins at 8pm at the school. Later on, if you’re getting sleepy, the eyes will open wide when the “Fools Fashion Show” gets underway at 10:30am. There’s a post run Fools Feast beginning at 12:15am followed by the award ceremony at 1am.

LAKE TOMAHAWK – Punch through the winter doldrums with a visit to Lake Tomahawk, site of the fifth annual New-Tom Sno Fleas vintage sled show and ride on Saturday, Feb. 21. The day’s events begin at 9:30am in downtown Lake Tomahawk and are geared for vintage sled owners and riders, but modern sleds are equally welcomed. Other activities include a snowshoe baseball game and vintage sled rides beginning at 1pm, big-ticket raffles and other raffles, and groomer rides – a treat that young children especially love. There will be food and refreshments throughout the day. Find your old snowsuits, dust off those old sleds and join other riders for a day of fun and to reminisce about the early days of snowmobiling. Vintage sled show registration starts at 9:30am in the parking area across from Smiley’s Pub and Shamrock Bar along corridor trail #17, adjacent to Hwy. 47.
After the awards presentation concludes at 2pm, members will start up the sleds and go for a short ride on local club trails. The ride will include a stop at a scenic overlook to enjoy the warmth of a fire and more socializing. Perhaps even another game of boggie wheel toss!
There is a $5 fee per sled registration with a $15 maximum if you bring multiple sleds. There will be various trophies and awards including, Best of Show, Best Original, Most Unique, Oldest Sled to complete the ride and for best vintage snowmobile suit.
Proceeds will go toward the snowmobile club in their efforts to provide smooth and well-marked trails for all, as well as for Lake Tomahawk children and the Snow Shoe Baseball program. For more information, send an e-mail to petetatro-494@gmail.com.

Welcome A Girls Day Out
Haunting wails of loons echo across still waters. Tall pines whisper and bow gracefully with the breeze. Nearby, children are laughing and the whine of a fishing reel’s drag protesting the pull of a mighty muskie is just within earshot. And some say they can still hear the sound of a far-off train whistle blowing in the distance - - ghostly remembrance of logging days gone by. It seems a bit like heaven, until suddenly, you realize that you have found yourself in Sayner/Star Lake. The two villages, linked by a lovely seven-mile drive along rustic Hwy N and Hwy K, comprise the Town of Plum Lake. Aside from the richness of the area’s natural wilderness, Sayner and Star Lake offer an abundance of fine restaurants, a challenging nine-hole golf course, housekeeping resorts, tennis courts, pristine lakes teeming with muskie, bass & walleye, groomed snowmobile and cross-country ski trails, paved bike trails, marked hiking trails, a fully-dressed library, an art gallery, several historical museums, and unique retail shops complete with haute couture from Paris. Truly, finding yourself in Sayner/Star Lake will guarantee a vacation you’ll want to replicate over and over again.

he day awaits you with boundless miles of biking trails. The Heart of Vilas County Bike Trail offers 45 miles of paved trails that are simply lovely. Only six feet wide in most places, the pavement is ensconced by trees and shrubs, with flat to manageably hilly terrain. As a result, bikers can go out for an hour or all day and have plenty to do and explore. But beware: on a trail this enjoyable, you may not want to turn back. Don’t have a bike? Not a problem; Up North Traders, located on Main Street in Sayner, has bikes to rent. Morning ride Start your day purchasing your bike trail map at Sayner Mobil Express. Get someone to drive you to Boulder Junction and drop you off in the parking lot by the Chamber of Commerce. Begin your bike ride heading south out
of town. When you reach the North Trout Lake Campground be sure to take the .6 mile loop ride where you’ll find drinking water and restrooms. Continue on your journey and you find yourself in downtown Sayner in time for lunch. Choose between Sayner Pub or The Junction Café. Both are located just off the bike trail. Afternoon ride Head back out of town the way you just came and head to Razorback Ridges. Here you will experience a different type of ride on the 30 miles worth of mountain bike trails. Be sure to choose a Wednesday or a Saturday to enjoy your bike ride because you can end your day enjoying the Plum Ski-ters water ski show at 7 PM located at Statehouse Point a short 2.5 miles down Razorback Road.

This beautiful waterfall is located on the middle branch of the Ontonagon River near Paulding. Although it does not get the “press” of more famous U.P. waterfalls, Bond Falls has a large following of admirers and had even been part of a calendar listing the most scenic natural places in the world! After viewing the falls enjoy your picnic lunch in the picnic area. Be sure to enjoy an ice cream cone at the Bond Falls Outpost. After lunch it’s time to head back to Sayner and enjoy an afternoon of swimming, one of the cleanest, clearest, safest swimming beaches in the Midwest, Crystal Lake lives up to its name. The lake is just 5 miles west of Sayner, and the entire lake and surrounding beaches, picnic areas and campgrounds are State-owned public property. pend a day experiencing the rich history of our area.
Begin your day at the Vilas Historical Museum that was founded in August of 1959 by Mabel Sayner Dewitt (daughter of Orrin Sayner for whom the town was named after). The museum contains more than 40,000 items portraying the history of Vilas County and the surrounding area, an extraordinary collection of snowmobiles, including the original machine built by Carl Eliason in 1924. A small gift shop features books by local authors and old fashioned toys. Down the road a little is Eliason Lumber and Hardware, the birthplace of the modern snowmobile, and the location of one of the oldest and most unique stores in northern Wisconsin. Check out their storefront window display where you’ll find many antique collectables including a player piano and snowmobile. Be sure to stop inside as Jona loves to share Sayner’s history and stories. Next it’s time to hit the road to Star Lake and explore the
rich logging history at The Old Milltown Depot & Gallery. The logging companies came to the Star Lake area in the late 1880s and by 1907 had cut down most of the trees and left just a few remnants behind. The Star Lake Mill alone took over four hundred million board feet of logs out of the Star Lake area. Just down the road is the picturesque Fredrickson bait shop, made of an old boxcar, which sits on the shores of Star Lake just as it has for 75+ years. The bait shop has been an integral part of the Star Lake community and has been painted and photographed by many people over the years. End your journey through history by having a memorable dinner at the Hintz’s North Star Lodge. Hintz’s North Star Lodge on Star Lake was built in 1894-95 as a home and retreat for railroad and lumber company officials and guests. The Waldheim Room, where dinner is served, is one of the two remaining original buildings still standing on the property.

nglers who cast their baits across the rich waters of Sayner/Star Lake’s fishing lakes are likely to return to shore either with fish-filled live wells or a trophy muskie large enough to mount. And when those anglers tell Sayner/Star Lake fish stories, they’re probably true.
fish story
“The combination of Plum Lake, Star Lake and Razorback Lake gives this community the best smallmouth fishing in America,” says Mike Errington, a licensed guide based in Star Lake. “And if you’re looking to catch a muskie, the population in the Irving, Ballard, and White Birch lake chain is just incredible. Encompassing 7,554 acres of water, Sayner and Star Lake are located in the headwaters of two drainage basins – the Manitowish River basin flowing to the west and the Wisconsin River basin flowing to the south. The two communities, which comprise the Town of Plum Lake, offer 31 boat landings, as well as 50 named and 95 unnamed lakes. Beneath the surface lies an abundance of smallmouth bass, walleye, crappie, bluegill, perch, northern pike, and of course, muskie. Several smaller streams are managed for trout, with Sayner’s Plum Creek receiving the most attention from trout anglers.
14
Teeming with fish
Partly due to the 18-inch minimum required to keep a smallmouth bass or walleye (a regulation imposed by the Department of Natural Resources to control crayfish populations in the Town of Plum Lake) and partly due to the simple fact that small-mouth bass and walleye thrive in the cold water temperatures of Wisconsin’s Northwoods, the fisheries in the Town of Plum Lake are teeming with fish, and the smallmouths are getting “huge,” Errington says. “This summer, I caught 16 smallmouths over six pounds and two of those were over seven pounds,” he says. Aside from trophy muskies and smallmouths, which often appeal to more experienced anglers, Plum Lake’s fisheries also offer an abundance of panfish that most children and beginners can catch easily. “Sayner/Star Lake is a great place for a family-fishing getaway,” says Errington. Now that’s one fish story you can count on.

With average snowfalls of 150 inches and over 25 miles of professionally groomed trails, the area is one of Vilas County’s top winter vacation areas.
Crane count set for Vilas County COUNTYWIDE – Keeping tabs on our feathered friends involves more than watching some species at the bird feeder. Birders are being asked to help out Saturday, April 18 for the 40th annual Midwest Crane Count (MCC). Sponsored by the International Crane Foundation, it’s said to be one of the largest wildlife surveys conducted by citizens. The MCC helps determine not only the population of cranes, but also their distribution. In Vilas County, the spotters are more likely to see and hear sandhill cranes, which are abundant in Wisconsin. But there is a possibility of spotting one or more whooping cranes. The central Wisconsin population of whooping canes is estimated at more than 100. The North Lakeland Discovery Center in Manitowish Waters is coordinating the crane count in Vilas County. Both beginner and experienced birders are invited. A brief training session Friday, April 17 at the Discovery Center, will run from 10-11:30am. Staff will review protocol and determine logistics. Saturday’s survey

takes place from 5:30-7:30am. Everyone will meet back at the center to go over the results. An optional breakfast gathering after the count is planned. Those interested in volunteering should call Heather Lumpkin, research and monitoring coordinator at the center, at 715-5432085 or e-mail heather@discoverycenter.net. Registration is also available by going to DiscoveryCenter.net.

Will Windigos show up for 5K/10K Snowshoe Stomp? (WINCHESTER) – The second annual WinMan Windigo 5K/10K Snowshoe Stomp will be Sunday, Feb. 15 on the silent sports WinMan Trail system in Winchester. The 10K race starts at 1pm, the 5K at 1:30pm. Both races are part of the Braveheart snowshoe series of racing. So, just what is a Windigo? Legends of the Algonquian peoples of the Great Lakes region describe them as half-beast creatures that can possess humans and who feast on innocent villagers during winter. The WinMan Trails traverse 1,300 acres of private and public land, and offer mountain biking, hiking, classic and skate skiing, groomed and ungroomed snowshoeing, and winter fat tire biking. The trail system is ideal for a snowshoe race due to the 8- to 14foot wide, groomed trails that “have a firm smooth surface with good width for passing. There’s also enough mileage to support a 10K race without having to repeat sections of trail,” according to the organizers. The race is for those wanting to push their times and compete as well as for the less competitive racers. Custom-made awards will go to the fastest three women and men in the 5K & 10K races. For the less competitive racers, there is a “Windigo Fur Hunters” option where participants seek out Windigos along the course attempting to snatch locks of their fur. In addition, there will be
a non-competitive kids 1K race, a big vat of fire-roasted chili, micro-beers, hot cocoa, and Windigo stories around the bonfire. To register, visit WinManTrails.com or call (877) 543-2085. The first 50 to register receive a complimentary WinMan Windigo fleece headband. Kids snowshoe entry is free; entry fees for the 5K and 10K are $25 each. The WinMan Trails are located 3.5 miles north of the Discovery Center, at the intersection of Highways W and J in Winchester.

Snowmobile hillclimb races, uphill drags
(place your event for $10) Feb. 21 - Caspian -- Snowmobile Hillclimb Races:
CASPIAN – Action-packed Mid America Championship Hillclimb races will return to Caspian, MI on Saturday, Feb. 21, setting the stage for the following week’s Wisconsin State Championship Hillclimb at Keyes Peak in Florence. Those who follow the Mid America Snow and Expert Terrain Racers (MASTERS) racing circuit will tell you that hillclimbs and its racing companion, uphill snow drags, are great family fun events to watch, and if you’re brave enough – and your sled is up to the task – great competition. The premise of the hillclimb is simple: pick a steep hill (some might say a cliff!), mark a route to the top, and set the sleds free to roar, squirm, spit snow and power their way to the top. Those riders who lose control of the sled might see it topple and roll – sometimes end-for-end – back home to the starting line. For the skilled driver who can discern a path and rap the throttle just right, he or she will crest the hill to the cheers of the fans, says MASTERS racing circuit president “Skip” Schulz. The fastest time of the ones who make it to the top determines the winner. The WI State Championship Hillcross will take place the weekend of Feb. 28 and March 1. The Michigan State Championship Hillcross at Norway Mtn., Norway, will be Saturday, March 14. Snow drags (two or more racers racing at a time) will be the following day, Sunday, also at Norway. The Mont du Lac Hillclimb will be Saturday, April 11 at Mont du Lac, in Superior. The MASTERS Hillcross and Snow Drag Championships takes place Sunday, April 12, also at Mont du Lac.
