Editors COLUMN Come Up North for Fun, Relaxation, Outdoor Beauty It’s been exciting and refreshing to see all the snowmobilers, cross-country skiers, downhill skiers, snow tubers and even fat bike devotees making road trips to northern Wisconsin this winter. As I write this (early February), there’s at least two feet of snow on the ground and more than two feet of ice on our lakes. Colder than usual, yes, but we’ll take that over cancelled events due to a lack of snow that’s plagued us at times in past years. For the first time in several years, this family of mine will be making a trip to see the Lake Superior ice caves north of Bayfield. There are numerous other events occurring in the Northwoods for you to attend with your own family – March 7-9 Hot Air for Hearts Balloon Rally in Cable, Feb. 22-23 Pro Vintage Snowmobile Races in Antigo, March 22 Taste of Tomahawk wine, food and beer tasting in Tomahawk, April 5 Only Fools Run at Midnight

in Minocqua, April 12 smelt frys in Turtle Lake and Luck (Balsam Lake’s is April 19), Dean S. Acheson Feb. 22 The Birkie Ski Race in Cable & Hayward, May 9-10 Birding Festival in Manitowish Waters, and many more across the landscape in coming weeks and months. Check out the calendar or go online, UpNorthAction.com to see all the details. The above events – along with snowmobiling, snowshoeing, ice fishing, cross-country and downhill skiing – will keep Cabin Fever at bay until the calendar page is ready to be flipped over to spring. That transition period from cold to warm is when we go on road trips to waterfalls in northern Wisconsin and the UP. They should be spectacular this spring due to the abundance of snow that we have had in the north.

The event is held just off the beach on Chetek Lake. The event draws numerous racers from throughout the Midwest. Last year they had nearly 200 race entries on the two

Various classes of sleds, ATVs and motorbikes will be racing on a 1,000-foot shaved ice track beginning at 10am until 4pm. There is a spectator admission fee. In addition to the radar runs, there will be games for children (11am to 3pm) ice rink, mini-golf (11am to 3pm), poker run, music and food, and a bonfire to follow activities. A pancake breakfast from 7-11am will be served at the Masonic Lodge.

Enjoy Cross-Country Skiing at its Finest (COUNTY-WIDE) – Whether you like to skate ski or traditional style, short distances or long endless loops, during the daytime or evening on lighted trails, Rusk County has a cross-country trail designed just for you. Here’s a look at three popular XC trails systems (there are others, check with the local chamber of commerce): Blue Hills Trail -- The Blue Hills Trail System has over 35 kilometers of cross-country trails looping through one of Wisconsin’s most beautiful landscapes. Both skating and classical style skiing are accommodated by this trail system that offers something for every ability level. From Bruce, head 8 miles northwest on Highway O. One-half mile east of Christie Mountain, you’ll find Fire Lane Road. Head north on Fire Lane Road for 2 1/2 miles. Bluehillstrail.com. Sisters’ Farm Trail – Sisters’ Farm Trail System provides 12 kilometers of groomed trails along the Flambeau River. Enjoy wonderful scenery along one of Wisconsin’s most famous riverways on excellent trails. Both classical and skating type skiing are supported by this trail system. Trails range from beginner level to expert. To get there from Ladysmith, head south on Hwy. 27 one mile. Go west on College Avenue one mile to Port Arthur

Road, then 2 miles to Sisters’ Farm Road. Head south 1 1/2 miles to the trailhead. Ladysmith Area Trails Association on Facebook. Ladysmith High School Trail – The 1.4 km Ladysmith High School lighted loop is lit until 10pm each night during the season. A 0.6 km trail is groomed on the athletic field. A 0.2 km trail cuts across the lighted trail. Ski this trail and you’ll quickly understand why it’s a favorite with both locals and visitors. The nearby Greenwood Park Trail is a great place for beginner snowshoers to get a feel for the sport. From Ladysmith, take Highway 8 east to Rocky Ridge Road. Ladysmith Area Trails Association is on Facebook.

Popular St. Patrick’s Day Parades Await Visitors

(SIREN & WEBB LAKE) – Everyone is Irish on St. Patrick’s Day, which this year falls on Monday, March 17. But, hey, it’s OK to begin the celebrations before then or even hold them afterwards! Two communities in Burnett County do just that by bringing out the Irish in everyone with parades and related activities. The Siren Chamber of Commerce gets the party going early, Saturday, March 15. ’Tis the day to don your best Kelly green and join the fourth annual 5K Shamwalk/Run at 10am at the Siren School. Registration starts at 8am. You can register online at BCAAPC.org. Run, walk or leprechaun leap your way through this fun family event. In the afternoon, stroll down to watch the 36th annual Siren St. Patrick’s Day Parade at 2pm on Main Street. Come and meet the St. Paul Winter Carnival Royal Family and Vulcans. Be sure to purchase a $5 button for a chance to win one of the nice prizes.

Then bring the family and enjoy one of the area’s most fun parades at Webb Lake on Saturday, March 22, beginning at 1pm in downtown Webb Lake. More than $500 in prizes for the top three floats ensures spirited competition and outstanding floats. The 24th annual parade will wind its way north on Hwy. H at 1pm – get there early because they close off the road at noon and the walk is then long. Thousands of people show up to see the numerous floats coming from a wide area. Many of the parade participants sport colorful costumes and hairstyles – mostly green of course. In past years, there have been military floats and mountain men from Forts Folle Avoine. Vendors will be there too to show off their favorite recipes and products. Food – corned beef & cabbage of course – and refreshments available.

Embark on a Snowmobiling Adventure (COUNTY-WIDE) – As we write this in early February, the snowmobile trails in northern Wisconsin are in excellent shape – perhaps as good as they have been in nearly a decade. Snowmobiling is an excellent family sport and Wisconsin has more than 25,000 miles of well-marked and groomed trails. In the North, they go through a wonderland of snow-laden forests and across thousands of lakes. Enjoy snowmobiling in Forest County boasting nearly 400 miles of groomed, state-funded trails winding through the Nicolet National Forest in lightly populated communities. All trails link to both casinos and all hospitality businesses in Forest County, providing many pit stops along the trail for food, lodging and refreshments. On Feb. 22, there’s a Winterfest Party with Pack ‘Em Inn at Beachside Bar & Grill, Lake Metonga, Crandon.

Pro Vintage Races Coming to Antigo (ANTIGO) – The Pro Vintage Racing snowmobile racing circuit will run its last vintage race of the season on Saturday, Feb. 22 at the Antigo Speedway, Langlade County Fairgrounds in Antigo. Then on Sunday Feb. 23, late model racers are invited to join the vintage racers for a full day of ice oval racing on this outstanding track. Pro Vintage Racing is a group of individuals dedicated to keeping vintage modified racing snowmobiles on the track. Food and refreshments will be available on the grounds. There is a $30 entry fee for five laps of racing and 100% payback. Racers are encouraged to pre-register by going to the PVR website: provintageracing.com. There is a wide selection of sled classifications, including Relic 440, F-500 Women’s, Champ 440, F-500 Juniors and Super Mod 440. The “newest” snowmobiles in the Pro vintage races were built in 1985. In the “relic class,” all the sleds are 1971 or older. Older brands include MotoSkis, Polaris, Arctic Cat and many others.

Call the Forest County “Snowline” for trail conditions: 715-478-2024. For further information and maps log on to the website at forestcountywi. com. Here’s a look at the trails: 100 Mile Snow Safari Trail: The 100 Mile Snow Safari has approximately 150 miles of marked and groomed trails through the Nicolet National Forest linking all the localities of Forest County. Maps, food, etc., are available at pit stops throughout the system. Lumberjack Memorial Trails: The Lumberjack Memorial Trails Club grooms and maintains more than 90 miles of trails in central and southern Forest County. These trails link to the 100 Mile as well as to the trails in the Lakewood area. Three Lakes/Brule River Trails: The Three Lakes/Brule River Trail system has over 80 miles of groomed trails in the Nicolet National Forest, linking northern Forest County to Florence, Vilas, and Oneida counties, as well as upper Michigan trails. Tombstone-Pickerel Trails: The Tombstone-Pickerel Trails include more than 20 miles of groomed trails in southwestern Forest County, with numerous pit stops and resorts, as well as a link to the Langlade County trail system. Black Bear Sportsmen’s Club: The Black Bear Club is Forest County’s newest snowmobile club, with more than 40 miles of groomed trails, linking the Crandon area north and west to trails in Oneida County.

We Found You a Fish-O-Ree

(LAONA) – Anglers won’t run out of lakes to fish or ice for that matter this winter in Forest County. The county boasts more than 800 named lakes, and the winter’s cold temperatures have ensured adequate ice for vehicle traffic (as always check before venturing out on unknown ice). To tempt them further, there is a “fish-o-ree” for fishermen to try their luck and angling skills this February. The Laona Volunteer Fire Department and Laona VFW Post 6823 announces their second annual Fish-O-Ree will be Saturday, Feb. 22 on Silver Lake near Laona. Hours are 8am to 4pm. Cash prizes for places first through third in four categories: northern, bass, walleye and panfish. There will be food and refreshments available inside the heated pavilion. Various raffles will be offered.

Treat the Family to a Delicious Smelt Fry (COUNTY-WIDE) – Fried to a golden crisp, the plucky smelt from the cold waters of Lake Superior are a staple of April fundraisers in three Polk County communities. What isn’t there to love: the fish are absolutely delicious, especially paired with one’s favorite brew; it’s usually all-you-can-eat, the money goes back into the communities for a good cause and best of all – someone else cleaned them! We had lots of fun in our younger days wading out in cold waters of Lake Superior, hauling a seine net full of dancing smelt back to shore, basking in the warmth of the campfire and partying with like-minded “smelters.” The next morning, however, meant hours of cleaning the five-gallon buckets of smelt that we had covered in ice until the trip home. Today, we’re content to hand over the required number of greenbacks, getting in return a platter full of golden brown smelt, coleslaw, chips and dessert. April is a ways off so here’s a reminder of the smelt frys’ dates in Polk County. April 12 – Turtle Lake, American Legion smelt fry, 4-8:30pm April 12 – Luck, smelt fry at the fire department, 3:30-7pm April 19 – Balsam Lake, smelt fry at Rod & Gun Club, 4pm start

The western edge of the trail system features rolling terrain and is a beautiful section of trail overlooking the springs. Two loops offer steep ascents and descents with favorable vista views. (PARK FALLS) – The Newman Springs Ski Trail, located in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, is designed for both the beginner and intermediate cross-country skiers. The loops are groomed for classic skiing only.

The trailhead is located 12 miles east of Park Falls on Hwy. 182. There is an outdoor toilet. A National Forest parking fee is required. The daily fee can be paid at the trailhead. An annual sticker can be purchased at the Forest Service Office on Hwy. 13 in Park Falls.

there will be a TV realty show based on these two men. The Knox Creek Heritage Center is the sponsor. Homemade multi-grain bread and cardamom braids will be available for purchase. For more information, visit sites.google.com/site/ knoxheritagecenter/home.

(BRANTWOOD) – Most Americans likely have never heard of St. Urho (pronounced “oorho”). But the patron saint of Finland has legions of fans, including many in Price County who say St. Urho should be just as famous as St. Patrick, who, legend says, drove the snakes out of Ireland. This Finnish-American holiday is based on the legend of St. Urho casting the frogs and grasshoppers out of Finland. Someday

(PARK FALLS) – A treasure trove of antiques and collectibles can be found at Wilson’s Antiques, corner of Hwy. 13 and Division Street in Park Falls. The large brick building has three floors full of unique and interesting items, ranging from solid wood furniture both primitives and Victorian to delicate pickle castors from the Victorian age. The owner, Mark Wilson, embarks on a lot of road trips throughout the year, searching for quality merchandise to replenish the stock or to add items that will prompt if not a purchase, a conversation about when it was made and by whom. The items range from motor oil and gasoline signs – perfect for the hubby’s garage – to Autumn Leaf glassware, pottery, stoneware both saltglaze and zinc, toys and tins. There are dozens of vintage clocks and lots of toy trucks and cars. Wilson’s Antiques has perhaps the nation’s finest advertising egg beater jars with hundreds to choose from. Whether you want to add to your own collection, or start one, Mark and his son Tim can guide you to quality purchases that you and your family will treasure in decades to come. Prices may range from a few dollars for a small item to several thousands, such as for a heavily carved American classical mirrored corner china cabinet. We almost guarantee you’ll find yourself wandering from one room to the next looking over the thousands of items in display cases and on the walls. Don’t miss the Morgan 1927 Aero motorcar model on display!

Wilson’s Antiques is also interested in making purchases, whether it’s a single item or your entire collection. Looking to fill a gap in your own collection? Ice Castle

The ice castle in downtown Eagle River is constructed of more than 2,500 12-inch-thick ice blocks cut from nearby Silver Lake. The past two years inclement weather (rain and too warm of temperatures) meant no ice castle could be built. The design changes each year its built. The interior is lit by colored lights once dusk settles on the community. Ice thrones are located on the north and south sides this year, popular for photos of families and couples.

Phelps Maple Syrup Tour, Exhibit and Craft Show

(PHELPS) – Celebrate the art of making pure maple syrup during 2014 Phelps Maple Syrup Tour on Saturday, April 5 from 8am to 4pm at the Phelps School, Old School Road, Phelps.

The event includes bus tours of several local sugar bushes, along with a craft fair (8am to 4pm) and more. This handson, family-oriented event celebrates the Northwoods art of making Wisconsin pure maple syrup. Tips will be given on how to identify maple trees. You will experience hands-on, tree tapping demonstrations. Entries for the “Northwoods Maple Syrup of the Year” will be judged. Maple-based food will be available at the Maple Café as well as “taffy on the snow.” Be sure to pick up some Syrup Fest merchandise. The maple syrup operations are called “sugar bushes” and they come in all shapes, sizes and colors. You will see small operators that produce just enough for their own use to large-scale producers and those in between. Maps will be available of the tour locations if you prefer to drive yourself. And whether you tour by bus or on your own, there will be plenty of time to enjoy the delicious food and take in the exhibits and craft show. Crafters will be displaying a wide array of products and there will be unique exhibits and children’s activities hosted by the Northwoods Children’s Museum, wildlife exhibits and more. For more information call (715) 5453800.

Inaugural Art Film Series Underway at Arts Center (SHELL LAKE) -- The Shell Lake Arts Center’s first-ever film series, “The Art of the Film,” has already begun, but there are several more critically acclaimed films from the United States and around the world yet to be shown with time for discussion and tips on how to appreciate cinema as an art form. The “Art of the Film” is relaxed and fun with popcorn and beverages available. Justin Peck, a lifelong Spooner resident and UW-Madison Film Studies graduate, will offer a short introduction to each film and facilitate conversation following each film. Many of the movies chosen for this first series were not available in area theaters when first released, and some are just worth seeing again. The center’s cafeteria will become the theatre with a 9’ X 13’ screen and seating at tables. Audience members are welcome to bring their own comfortable, folding chairs if they prefer. The Arts Center is located at 802 First Street in Shell Lake two blocks off Hwy. 63. The south doors that face First Street are the entry doors for the Film Series. Admission is $7 a person. Dates of the remaining shows are Feb. 22, March 8, 15, 22, and 29. Get a list of film titles and a short description by visiting shelllakeartscenter.org, or calling 715-468-2414.
