Editor’s Column Discover the Northwoods’ way of life here
Until my family moved to the Northwoods, this time of the year usually saw me poring over vacation guides and fishing maps as I planned a trip or two, with the first one always slated for the opening of Wisconsin’s general fishing season.
Dean S. Acheson
I still look over the fishing maps; still look at the vacation guides and brochures as we wander the Northwoods for places to see and events to attend.
In my early years, I was big on bass, especially the scrappy smallmouth, and also welcomed northern pike in the net. Since then, I have transitioned to walleye and crappies for the most part. Late ice is fabulous for big crappies on a favorite hot spot. Of course, you want to be careful when the ice thins out. The big boat and travel shows were also high on the “to do” list on weekends. But I also frequented local boat dealers who had excellent inventories and good advice on which features (I want them ALL!) to add to the growing list.
This issue of Action magazine spans three months, with most events happening in February and early March. Come spring, the chambers and civic organizations will be ramping up the excitement. And come summer, there will be so many good choices that you’ll be hard pressed to narrow the field down. Now is the time to plan your vacations northbound. The accommodations are excellent and varied to serve every lifestyle. R-el-a-x-i-n-g is spelled many ways Up North, mostly in watching the sunrise or sunset over calm water. Welcome to the land they call Up North.

Fish-O-Ree draws many anglers to Trump Lake WABENO – One would think that after more than five decades of ice fishing tournaments, the fish in Trump Lake would be a bit suspicious. But, no, they keep biting and the folks who put on the annual Trump Lake Fish-O-Ree couldn’t be happier.
That’s because hundreds of people come out to enjoy their event, which raises money for
the sponsors: the American Legion and the Wabeno Lions. In turn, the civic organizations use the money for charitable purposes. The 55th annual event will be Saturday, Feb. 11 with fishing from 7am to 4pm. Headquarters will be the Trump Lake Pavilion, located at the boat landing there. There is no registration fee. Cash prizes will be awarded for the largest and second largest bass, northern, walleye, bluegill, crappie and perch registered that day. There will be raffles, food and refreshments. Go online at trumplake.org for updates or call Paul at 715-674-4477 or Terry at 715-473-2408. Trump Lake is 1.5 miles north of Wabeno on Hwy. 32. Watch for signs.

Located in a large area of hardwood forest, the trail offers a scenic view of Otter Springs and Bug Lake. The eight-mile trail comes complete with a parking area and a ski shelter between the two intermediate trails. The 0.75-mile loop is suitable for beginners. The intermediate trails consist of a 1.25-mile segment and the third is a 3-mile loop with more hills and curves than the others. Decades ago, a WCC crew built the shelter out of cedar logs. It’s equipped with benches and an area for a small fire.

‘Braapfest’ celebrates the ‘glory days’ of snowmobiling
SPRINGSTEAD – Along with the smell of 2-stroke snowmobiles warming up on a really cold day, sledheads are drawn to the “braap” sound of snowmobiles powering their way across the snow. Thus, the appropriately named “Braapfest” celebration on Wednesday-Saturday, Feb. 23-25 in Springstead will be music to their ears.
The event draws about 1,000 sleds, says event co-founder Craig Crowl. Expect to see a bunch of cool running vintage and classic sleds at this event, but all years, makes and models including modern sleds are welcomed. The ninth annual event will be headquartered at Springstead Lake Lodge. Parking and entry onto the lake is free. The family event will appeal to multi-generations of outdoors people. “Braapfest was designed to be a throwback to the 1970s during the glory days of snowmobiling,” explains Crowl, who
owns the lodge. “It began as a celebration of riding and collecting vintage and classic snowmobiles.” While the main event is on Saturday, attendees arrive early that week to go on social rides that begin Wednesday, starting at 10am. On Thursday they will ride late model sleds north for the day. Friday, they will run vintage sleds to Price County for lunch and to visit some fun places. The “big day” on Saturday features a huge vintage ride (modern sleds welcomed, too) starting at 10am with a lunch stop included, then returning around 2pm for the races – including Outlaw race sleds -- and more fun, including an impressive large ice bar on the lake. Live music will be played Friday and Saturday nights in the lodge. The lodge is located at 1065N Springstead Road, Springstread. Visit springstreadlakelodge.net for updates and more details.

How sweet it is: Visit a maple syrup farm
CUMBERLAND – Early spring will find dozens of maple syrup producers out in the woods, readying the trees, hooking up the pails and hoses as they collect sap from the sugar maples. Whether small or big, the producers’ collective aim is to produce tasty maple syrup. The family-operated Anderson Maple Syrup in rural Cumberland is one of many such sugarbush operations that welcomes visitors to learn about maple syrup production and to experience firsthand the sweetness of their products. Sap flows when temperatures hover just above freezing. Ideal conditions result in as much as five gallons per day from a maple; other days, it can be just a trickle. The sap is either carried or piped into the cooking shed where it’s boiled down. In general, it takes 37-40 gallons of sap to produce a single gallon of maple syrup.
Saturday’s NSSR registration starts at 8am with racing from 10am to 4pm. The NSSR radar runs will be on the 1,000-foot shaved ice track. A separate 1,000-foot track for fun runs will be available for non-sanctioned sleds where riders can do a radar run. The top fundraiser in the annual Bikini Run will be crowned King & Queen of Winter Fest. Spectator admission includes all activities. There will be music, a scavenger hunt, ice bowling, snow painting, soup cook-off, ice-skating and lots of kids activities. Welcome Welcome

Welcome
aunting wails of loons echo across still waters. Tall pines whisper and bow gracefully with the breeze. Nearby, children are laughing and the whine of a fishing reel’s drag protesting the pull of a mighty muskie is just within earshot. And some say they can still hear the sound of a far-off train whistle blowing in the distance - ghostly remembrance of logging days gone by.

Traditions offers tasteful home décor with a twist
~Anonymous Nothing draws women together better than a day out shopping or crafting together. In Sayner, first head to Traditions, and find a wide selection of items that depart from the average “Northwoods flavor.” Traditions is a full-service gift and home furnishings boutique offering a wide selection frequently updated with new, fashionable lines from suppliers on the cutting edge. Staff is available every day to help you mix and match your wardrobe, find packable pieces for travel, or turn heads at your son’s or daughter’s wedding. If hands-on crafting is more your style, visit Plum Lake Quilts, a full-service quilting emporium offering classes, longarm quilting services, fabrics galore, and an array of patterns and kits. Owner Pat Anderson has 30 years of quilting experience and a passion for her “Open Sew” every Wednesday, where women can socialize, compare ideas, and sew together.

Experiences for The Summer Sports Enthusiast “Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better.” ~ Albert Einstein
Sayner/Star Lake is a year-round sporting paradise. In the fragrant woodland summer, warm-weather sports abound, whether you’re a hiker, cyclist, equestrian, or golfer.
The Hiker Your summer day can begin in Star Lake by enjoying Tramper’s Trails. Then head to the Star Lake Interpretive Trail, featuring interpretive signs along its lovely landscape, part of which is on a Star Lake peninsula. In Sayner, just on the outskirts of town, Razorback Ridges trails offer 12 miles of exhilarating terrain and breathless views. Trail maps are available at The Corner Store on Highway N, GreenWeavers on Main Street, and other local businesses. Further down the road is the Fallison Lake Trail, a breath-taking trail with spectacular views of Fallison Lake. Booklets on wildlife, flora and trail history are available from the DNR Trout Lake Office and at the trailhead. Loops of .5, 1.0, 2.0 and 2.5 miles are available.
The Cyclist Also in Sayner, the paved Heart of Vilas County Bike Trail system links smoothly northward to the Boulder Junction bike paths and westward to the St. Germain Trails. Bike Trail maps are available at Sayner Mobil Express on Main Street, as well as several other Sayner businesses. The Vilas County Bike Trail offers 45 miles of paved forest trails exhuming scents of evergreen, wildflower, and loam. Six-feet wide with hills just challenging enough – you won’t have to walk your bike uphill! For a more rugged experience, head to Razorback Ridges. Here you will experience a different type of ride on 30 miles worth of mountain bike trails. Don’t have a bike? Not a problem. The Corner Store, located on Highway N in Sayner, has bikes to rent, and a full supply of Vilas County Bike Trail maps on hand. Says Corner Store owner Mary Debilzen, “We are your one-stop-shop for creating the perfect Northwoods Wisconsin experience.” The Corner Store has served residents, campers, and visitors in the surrounding area for over 70 years. Centrally located within the Northern Highland - American Legion State Forest and the SaynerStar Lake area, The Corner Store is directly adjacent to over 40 miles of paved bike trails, 12 miles of mountain bike and cross-country

mer Sports Enthusiast ski trails, and is near many lakes and campgrounds. The Corner Store is also right on the way to the Plum Ski-ters waterski show.
The Equestrian Plum Lake Equestrian Center is the perfect place to meet with other horse lovers while perfecting your own riding techniques, as well as the relationship you have with your horse. Equipped with indoor and outdoor riding arenas, this lovely facility also provides a heated barn with several box stalls. Horse clinics and workshops are offered year-round. The facility is also available to rent.
The Golfer Plum Lake Golf Course, located on the south shore of Plum Lake, offers a challenging nine-hole course rich with history and the sounds and fragrance of the best of the Northwoods. Founded in 1912, it is the oldest nine-hole golf course in Wisconsin, featuring a turn-of-the-century clubhouse, wrap-around porch, and a beautiful view of the lake.
On the Water Swimming, boating and water sports opportunities abound in Sayner/Star Lake. For instance, Sayner’s Crystal Lake is located next to one of the cleanest, clearest, safest swimming beaches in the Midwest. At just under 90 acres in size and a maximum depth of 67 feet, the water is clear and deep. It’s a favorite for scuba divers as well as recreational swimmers. Crystal Lake beach is perfect for families of all ages. Come and picnic at the lovely picnic area next to the beach, or camp at several well-equipped campsites on the state-owned property. Before you head onto the water, check out the canoes and kayaks available for rent at Up North Traders, located on Main Street in Sayner. Kayaks are also available to rent at The Corner Store. Next, you’ll need to choose from the wonderful lakes in the area to paddle on. Just refer to the map in this booklet. If a canoe or kayak is not your cup of tea, head over to The Star Lake Store where you can rent a boat and motor on a trailer. Errington’s Resort also has boats available for rent. Nortech Marine in Sayner also is committed to making sure your fun on the water is uninterrupted. Aside from pontoon rentals, Nortech Marine also offers full-service boat, pier and lift repair. At the end of your day, enjoy the Plum Ski-ters water ski show in Sayner on select days at 7 PM located at Statehouse Point–a short 2.5 miles down Razorback Road. Finally, fishing opportunities in the Sayner/Star Lake abound. See page 8 for fishing information.

more than just a fish story
More than Just a fish story
A
nglers who cast their lines across the rich waters of Sayner/ Star Lake’s fishing lakes are likely to return to shore either with fish-filled live wells or a trophy muskie large enough to mount. And when those anglers tell Sayner/Star Lake fish stories, they’re probably true. “The combination of Plum Lake, Star Lake and Razorback Lake gives this community the best smallmouth fishing in America,” says Mike Errington, a licensed guide based in Star Lake. “And if you’re looking to catch a muskie, the population in the Irving, Ballard, and White Birch lake chain is just incredible. Encompassing 7,554 acres of water, Sayner and Star Lake are located in the headwaters of two drainage basins – the Manitowish River basin flowing to the west and the Wisconsin River basin flowing to the south. The two communities, which comprise the Town of Plum Lake, offer 31 boat landings, as well as 50 named and 95 unnamed lakes. Beneath the surface lies an abundance of smallmouth bass, walleye, crappie, bluegill, perch, northern pike, and of course, muskie. Several smaller streams are managed for trout, while Sayner’s Plum Creek receives the most attention from trout anglers.
Teeming with fish Partly due to the 18-inch minimum required to keep a smallmouth bass or walleye (a regulation imposed by the Department of Natural Resources to control crayfish populations in the Town of Plum Lake) and partly due to the simple fact that smallmouth bass and walleye thrive in the cold water temperatures of Wisconsin’s Northwoods, the fisheries in the Town of Plum Lake are teeming with fish, and the smallmouths are getting “huge,” Errington says. “This summer, I caught 16 smallmouths over six pounds and two of those were over seven pounds,” he says. Aside from trophy muskies and smallmouths, which often appeal to more experienced anglers, Plum Lake’s fisheries also offer an abundance of panfish that most children and beginners can catch easily.
Bait and gear aplenty In Sayner, anglers can stock up on bait and gear at Up North Traders, which rents boat motors, canoes, and kayaks. It also sells live bait, fishing tackle, and fishing licenses. Sayner’s The Corner Store also offers bait and fishing supplies. If you’re in Star Lake, the Star Lake Store is your destination for live bait and fishing licenses. “Sayner/Star Lake is a great place for a family fishing getaway,” says Errington. Now that’s one fish story you can count on.

a snowy day
Experiences for a snowy day
“The first fall of snow is not only an event, it is a magical event. You go to bed in one kind of world and wake up in another quite different . . if this is not enchantment then where is it to be found?” ~J. B. (John Boynton) Priestley
There’s nothing like a snowfall in the Northwoods ... the snow gently dropping to the ground and resting on the pine trees, and silent, lazy flakes dropping on your tongue. Set your wintery journey in motion by taking advantage of the area’s boundless cross-country skiing and snowshoeing opportunities. Head over to Razorback Ridges, which offers scenic trails featuring varied terrains for beginner-to-expert skiers. The trail system is maintained by the Sayner/Star Lake Lions Club. After that, enjoy The Star Lake Nature Trail where you can find interpretive signs along the way with part of the trail on a peninsula that juts out into Star Lake. Visit www.vilaswi.com/outdoor-fun/crosscountry-skiing-snowshoeing/ for printable maps of all area trails.
If speed is more your style, then you will be glad to hear that Sayner is the birthplace of the snowmobile. Don’t forget to check out the miles of wonderfully groomed trails in the area. The Sayner-Star Lake Barnstormers, the local snowmobile club, offers its website saynerbarnstormers.com for more snowmobile information. And if you get hungry along the way, no worries! The trail system has great signage that will lead you to many excellent eating establishments. No snowmobile? No problem. Nortech Marine offers snowmobile rentals all winter long. Don’t forget about the spectacular ice fishing in Sayner and Star Lake. Check with White Birch Village for ice fishing packages and beautiful accommodations. And, live bait, tackle and ice fishing supplies are available from Up North Traders in Sayner. Finally, if simply keeping warm is your priority, check out Sayner’s Earth Sense Energy Systems, which specializes in the sales, service and installation of pellet stoves. And, at Earth Sense, pellets are always available in stock.

the history buff
Experiences for The History buff
“If you want to understand today, you have to search yesterday.” ~Pearl Buck
Spend a day experiencing the rich history of the Sayner/Star Lake area. Begin your day at the Vilas Historical Museum, which was founded in August of 1959 by Mabel Sayner Dewitt (daughter of Orrin Sayner for whom the town was named). The museum contains more than 40,000 items portraying the history of Vilas County and the surrounding area, as well as an extraordinary collection of snowmobiles, including the original machine built by Carl Eliason in 1924. A small gift shop features books by local authors and old fashioned toys. Down the road, you’ll find Eliason Lumber and Hardware, the birthplace of the modern snowmobile, and the location of one of the oldest and most unique stores in northern Wisconsin. Check out Eliason’s storefront window display, where you’ll find many antique collectables, including a player piano and snowmobile. Be sure to stop inside to learn more about Sayner’s history.
Art & History Lovers Flock to Star Lake
Anchoring Star Lake as a base for Northwoods artisans is The Old Schoolhouse Art Gallery, which is part of the Northwoods Art Tour -- a collection of several Northwoods artists with varying artistic works. The Friends of Star Lake -- a group dedicated to preserving and restoring historic Star Lake sites – offers its members’ fine art, photography, and other artifacts for sale at the Gallery, which also
serves as a gift store and historical museum. The Gallery itself is steeped in history. In 2005, Bill Hintz, a long-time Star Lake resident and owner of Hintz’s North Star Lodge, purchased and restored Star Lake’s original 90 year old, one room schoolhouse and converted into to a gallery/gift shop and museum.
The Fredrickson Bait Shop has been painted and photographed by many people over the years.
Meanwhile, Friends of Star Lake, along with Hintz, replicated the town’s Old Milltown Depot which is directly adjacent to the Old Schoolhouse Gallery. The group recently relocated the Frederickson House -- the Star Lake home of two beloved sisters for nearly 100 years and an original logger’s home -- to become part of the historic community park. The Fredrickson house will serve as a museum illustrating Star Lake’s history and will be full of artifacts dating from 1895. The Depot serves as a museum dedicated to Star Lake’s railroad days. Just down the road is the picturesque Fredrickson Bait Shop, made from an old boxcar, which rests on the shores of Star Lake – just as it has since the area’s logging days. The bait shop has been an integral part of the Star Lake community and has been painted and photographed by many people over the years. End your journey through history by having a memorable dinner at Hintz’s North Star Lodge. The Lodge on Star Lake was built in 1894-95 as a home and retreat for railroad and lumber company officials and guests. The Waldheim Room, where dinner is served, is one of the two remaining original buildings on the property.

Good Times Meanwhile, at The Sayner Pub, things get going a little later in the day -- around 10:00 am, because the Pub often stays open until 2:00 am, particularly during the summer months. “We have a great time in here,” says Eric Liebenstein, Sayner Pub owner. “We provide a place where friends can get together, have a good dinner, and then stay around to play a few games of pool or enjoy the entertainment.” Liebenstein brings in the area’s best bands for entertainment and Sayner Pub patrons aren’t shy about dancing to the beat. Another favorite establishment for foodies is The Corner Store in Sayner, where huge scoops of ice cream, shakes and sundaes delight parents and children alike. The Corner Store also offers other hot snacks, such as pizza. While the kids are testing their skills in The Corner Store’s Arcade Room, parents can relax around picnic tables outside. And, instead of having to run out of town for milk, bread, and other necessities such as firewood or other camping supplies, customers can stay close to home and purchase groceries and camping and fishing supplies at The Corner Store.
Savory Specialties Just down Highway N lies Vinchi’s Hillside Inn, where patrons can watch a good game in the bar before drifting to the dining room. Vinchi’s offers a complete dinner menu, offering specials every night, but it’s most famous for its thin-crust pizza.

Step Out of the Box at Green Weavers Nestled in the little town of Sayner, WI, GreenWeavers is as “in vogue” as any urban boutique At GreenWeavers, women shopping for the latest in fashion trends will find the latest in haute couture from Paris, Italy, Montreal, and the U.S. “We love assisting our customers in finding just the right apparel to suit their body type and palette, whether it’s for a special occasion, or just comfortable, everyday wear,” says Wendy Kimbrell, GreenWeavers owner. Located in the center of town on Sayner’s Main Street, GreenWeavers Gift & Apparel boasts more than 3,000 sq. ft. of retail space, and a huge inventory of women’s apparel not found at department stores. “We travel worldwide to ensure that our styles are not the average styles you find in the malls,” Kimbrell says.
“We’re all about stepping out of the box, and looking gorgeous everywhere you step.”
– GreenWeavers Owner Wendy Kimbrell Everyday wear abounds at GreenWeavers, which provides pants, jackets, sun dresses, coats and business attire for women wishing to spruce up their work and play wardrobes with elegant, stylish fashions from around the globe. Apparel for reunions, parties, conventions and cruises is vast and varied, and when it comes to weddings, GreenWeavers is ready to oblige. The boutique’s wedding apparel, targeted to mother-of-the-bride and mother-of-thegroom shoppers, is designed to make every attending female shine. “We want to make sure that the matriarchs of the family look stylish and contemporary at their childrens’ weddings,” Kimbrell says. “We’re all about stepping out of the box, and looking gorgeous everywhere you step. ” GreenWeavers also offers shoes, jewelry, hats, belts, purses, and gifts, as well as sound fashion advice for shoppers wanting to make the most out of their wardrobes. Says Jeanne Schmidt, GreenWeavers sales associate, “While we encourage you to push your fashion boundary to become a better, more stylish version of yourself, we always offer honest advice and never try to sell you clothing that does not look fabulous on you. “Further, we assist you in finding garments that accent the finer attributes of your body type, and offer fashionable couture in all sizes.” Sizes at GreenWeavers range from Extra Small to Double Extra Large, so that women of all shapes and sizes can make the most out of what the boutique has to offer. And they do make the most of them. Chicago resident Loretta Pierson, for instance, travels to GreenWeavers twice annually to update her business-oriented work wardrobe. “I’ve been shopping for my clothes at GreenWeavers for 14 years now, and I simply won’t buy clothes anyplace else,” Pierson says. “Why would I?”

Play in the snow on fat bike trails
SPOONER -- Washburn County offers two great trails for winter fat bike riding. Parking is available at both locations and there are excellent winter accommodations in the area if you want to plan a fat bike vacation. Just east of Spooner on Hwy. 70, Wildcat Mountain Bike Trail offers 14 miles of groomed fat bike trails. During the summer, it’s a mountain bike haven with a combination of single track and double track for a wide variety of riding skills and experiences. The majestic land features mature oak, basswood and maple stands. There are sections that take you through hundreds of
poplar trees that will remind you of Colorado aspen. The many acres are also dotted with glacial lakes that offer pristine viewing. Spooner City Park Trail (College Street Park) consists of 4-5 miles of riding right within the city limits. This is another warm season mountain bike trail featuring a total of six miles of single track that feature bridges, steep climbs and descents, and more. Wear appropriate clothing and be sure to obtain a trail map before heading out on the trail. If you are looking to rent a fat bike to try out this growing sport, head over to Saw This in Spooner.
Lions Club to host ice fishing contest
SPOONER -- Grab your ice fishing gear and head out to Spooner Lake for a fun day of competitive fishing at the Spooner-Trego Lions Club ice fishing contest on Saturday, Feb. 4 starting at 10am and ending at 3pm.
