Discover the beauty and fun in the Northwoods We took a trip to two of our favorite places in mid-May – Bond Falls in Paulding and, further north, Manabezho Falls in the Porcupine Mountains. The water volume was more characteristic of what we would expect from the snowmelt and April showers than the sedate May that we are use to.

and foot marathons are there for the dedicated sports enthusiast. (Marathons must be like potato chips – you can’t just do one. We have a dear friend who got into running a couple of years ago. Now, she sends us reports it seems monthly on her exploits, including a first in overall women.)

A week of rain contributed to the water flow, impressive as it thundered its way down the paths carved over thousands of years.

Some festivals pop up in June, including the long-running Musky Festival in Hayward, Aquafest in Rice Lake and the Czech-Slovak Community Festival in Phillips. If you, like us, enjoy watching the classic and antique car auction shows on cable TV, then you’ll appreciate the Lion’s Classic Car Show in Frederic and the Classic Car Show in Wausau, both also in June.

Although it was mid-week, and early in the tourism season, several couples were there to take in the spectacle. We met a couple from the Twin Cities area in the Porkies, scouring the bank of Lake Superior for agates. They had found a few, the size of small marbles. This issue of Action magazine will take you to similar places of wonder with lots of activities for the family to enjoy. Bike races

Like the agate-hunting couple mentioned above, we invite you to turn the pages and discover the nuggets of fun and excitement scattered throughout the Northwoods – the land we call Up North!

Discover the wild rivers of Florence County FLORENCE – Summertime is an excellent time to view rivers of Florence County. Throw in a waterfall or two and a series of rapids and you’ve got the makings for a picture perfect trip to the Northwoods. Florence County’s new 100-mile “Wisconsin Wild Rivers Tour” provides highway signs that guide visitors to 15 different access points on the Pine and Popple rivers – two of the original state designated “wild rivers.” The term “wild” refers to the undeveloped shorelines along these rivers. While there are a few class 3 rapids and several waterfalls, there are numerous stretches suitable for beginning paddlers and there are portages around the more challenging stretches. This new 100-mile loop features 15 access points to enjoy the Pine and Popple. Whether you are a paddler, fisherman, hiker,

sightseer, bird watcher, photographer or geocacher, you’ll find new places to explore on these wild rivers. There are places to camp, historic sites to see and friendly people to meet. Start your tour from the Visitor Center on the corner of State Hwy. 70 & U.S. Hwy. 2. Pick up a brochure, explore the interpretive displays or browse the Wild Rivers gift shop. Their free mobile app “Explore Florence County” will help you plan your trip and explore as you go through the tour or throughout the county. For more information about the recreational opportunities in Florence County, call 888-889-0049 or visit exploreflorencecounty.com. Interpretive Center hours: Monday-Friday 8am to 4pm; Saturday 9am to 3pm (closed Dec. 1 – May 1).

FLORENCE – The 10th annual Quilt Show & Strawberry Social will be Saturday, June 24, 10am to 2pm, at the Florence Historical Society and the Webb-Judge House in Florence. In addition to displays of beautifully done quilts at the museum, and delicious strawberry treats, there will be a craft show featuring local crafters and vendors. Admission to the show is free. In 2007, the Florence County Historical Society officially opened the historical museum at 201 Florence Avenue. Three permanent exhibits and several newly designed exhibits are featured each season. A special area has been set aside to honor our veterans. A vast picture collection from the county’s eight townships can be viewed at the museum.

Take a ride on the Lumberjack Steam Train LAONA -- The train crews are polishing the 101-year-old Vulcan steam engine, known as the Lumberjack Steam Train, so it is in perfect shape to start another season of carrying passengers on June 20. These days Old 4-Spot, as it was known in the lumberjack era, doesn’t carry logs and lumber. It carries visitors, in vintage rail cars and cabooses, to the Camp 5 Museum Complex and all it has to offer. On June 20th, the first run leaves the depot at 11am, with another run every hour, and the last trip leaves at 2pm. This schedule will run until Aug. 19, Monday through Saturday. Sunday the train stays in the depot and rests! When you step onto the grounds of the complex, you can enjoy an excellent logging museum, both inside and on the grounds around the museum. The logging museum takes you back in time to the early days of logging and pioneer settlement here in the northeast corner of Wisconsin. A blacksmith shop will be operating in the museum, giving insight into the tools made and used by early loggers. Right next door is the petting zoo, a favorite with the kids. The Green Treasure Forest Tour will give the visitor insight into modern, sustainable logging techniques and the science involved in keeping society supplied with lumber and paper. If you like to shop for unique gifts, along with some great

fudge, candy, ice cream and other treats, the Cracker Barrel Gift Store will delight you. When your appetite awakens, the Choo Hut open-air restaurant will be serving delicious lunches. Do you like fine horses, vintage firearms and clothing? If so, you should make sure you ride the Lumberjack Steam Train on July 15. The Cowboys will be there! These guys will rob the Lumberjack Steam Train on every run. There will also be a barn dance with live music in the evening after the Cowboy visit. The Fall Festival begins Sept 2, and runs through Sept. 9, 16, 23 & 30. The Cowboys will return on Sept. 30 for another round of train robberies! On Aug. 12, the pedes will return to Camp 5. Pedes are the small railcars used by railroad workers to repair train tracks. You may get a ride on one of these unique railroad vehicles. Agapevoyage.com has selected the Lumberjack Steam Train as one of the Top 10 Natural Attractions of the Midwest. There is a membership program that helps support this unique attraction. MERCER -- These are the good times for fishing the nearly 200 lakes, streams and rivers in Iron County. All anglers – fishing buddies and families – are invited to explore these exceptional bodies of water and make fond memories for a lifetime. Each waterbody is unique and offers excellent opportunities to bring back the makings of a fish fry to the cabin or a trophy fish to be mounted. You can find plenty of fresh bait and a variety of tackle, along with helpful advice from the folks who fish for a living. Hook up with a guide or explore on your own. The Mercer area is a natural for kayaking, canoeing and other water sports, too. Clear skies, fresh air and serenity are yours to enjoy. Abundant wildlife such as loons, eagles, and white-tailed deer are everyday occurrences. Here’s a sampling of area lakes to whet your appetite: • San Domingo Lake – Located in the east central portion of the Mercer area, just off Hwy. 51 with a private landing. Just 39 acres but 20 feet deep with northern pike, largemouth bass and panfish. • French Lake – Located in the Springstead area, just north of Hwy. 182, 92 acres and 16 feet deep. Musky, walleye, bass and panfish. • Little Martha Lake – No private landing, so you will need to be a lodging guest on this private lake located in the north central area of Mercer. Musky, northern, largemouth bass and panfish are very abundant.

Mark calendar for Tomahawk Veterans Fall Ride By Commander Gerald Dvorak Wurl-Feind-Ingman VFW Post 2687, Tomahawk TOMAHAWK – The Tomahawk Downtown VFW Fall Ride, as it was called in 2016, has picked up a new term for 2017. The downtown is now known as the Tomahawk Veterans Fall Ride. All those veterans who showed their support in 2016 are to be thanked immensely. You welcomed the Wurl-Feind-Ingman Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2687 with open arms. We were equally happy to see all of you and to meet many one-on-one. We hope to make your 2017 experience equal to, if not better, than last year’s. New this year will be pins. With the rush of pulling the event together in 2016 we did not have time to order pins. When you see us at the MASH tent you can pick up your 2016, as well as your 2017 pins. We want you to remember your Tomahawk experience and explain to your friends who did not attend, just what “that” is pined on your vest. You will be able to meet representatives from other veteran organizations and find out just what they are all about. Most of you veterans probably already know, but folks who are not

veterans will get a chance to find out first hand. As a patriotic people it is important to understand how and what can be done to support our returning military. This gives you an opportunity to find out what veteran organizations you wish to support. The big kick-off will be the MASH Blood Bank on Sept. 14 at the Tomahawk Community Bank (in the Community Room) on Fourth Street at the east end of the downtown business district. This blood drive starts at 8am and breakfast will be served at the VFW just two blocks south on Fourth Street. These breakfasts will be served daily on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Sept. 14-16. If you had breakfast there in 2016 you know it is a good place to spend your dollars. There’s a breakfast that will “hold you over” ’till supper! The Tomahawk Veterans Fall Ride is on the VFW facebook at facebook.com/ VFW.TOMAHAWK/. You can also make a donation to support the yearly Tomahawk Veterans Fall Ride by going to continuetogive. com/tomahawkveteransfallride. You will also find a “donate” button on our facebook page. Come and enjoy the weekend with veterans serving veterans! (Part 1 of a 2-part article—see next issue for more information.)

June 3 Crivitz – Bug Splatter Bike Ride: Sponsored by Twin Bridge Rescue Squad. 715-927-1641.

Let’s get the golf discs flying PESHTIGO & MARINETTE – Disc golf appeals to all ages and levels of experience. There are more than 230 disc golf courses in Wisconsin! Marinette County is home to two disc golf courses. Offering various difficulty levels and scenic beauty, these courses are a “must play” for the disc golfer!

Marinette’s City Park has a beautiful 9-hole disc golf course. Laid out over a 2,790-foot course, it offers 6 wooded and 3 open holes. No. 4 is a 353-foot beautiful tunnel shot and #7 is 609 feet from the top of a sledding hill. The course is free to use. Discs are available for use at the Civic Center and can be checked out with a $20 per set deposit. The deposit is returned in full when the three-disc set is returned. Scorecards and course maps are also available at the Civic Center. Peshtigo’s Badger Park’s disc golf course was redesigned in 2016. The 9-hole course is open, flat and short with lots of trees, according to a reviewer on dgcoursereview.com. Peshtigo Flowage is across the road and makes for a nice backdrop. A good number of mature trees make up the difficulty here, said the reviewer. There’s a nearby children’s play area so be careful throwing on the last holes. On the plus side, the younger kids will get a twofor-one outing when you bring them to play disc golf and then let them cut loose on the big playground. Discs are available from the campground office, when staffed. It is recommended you bring your own discs.

Oneida County 43 Preparation ensures a quality lumberjack show No matter how good a log roller is, he or she will end up in the water eventually. It’s a cold swim before those first few shows of the season.

Climbers’ gaffes help the lumberjacks climb the 60’ – 90’ poles, one of the Lumberjack Shows most exciting events.

A spin-off of the famous Scheer’s Lumberjack Shows that began in Hayward, the Woodruff show features the same worldclass athletes in a performance that is identical to the Hayward venue. Preparing the site for the summer performances involves maintenance to guarantee the safety of performers as well as its guests. The climbing poles that rise 60 feet into the air are inspected and pads at the bottom are secured in place. “When you are climbing that pole at record speed, the last thing you want on your mind is its stability,” states Cassidy Scheer, world champion pole climber. The log dogs on which the lumberjacks stand and swing razor sharp axes in the event called the underhand chop are checked for structural safety. The specially turned cedar logs used for the logrolling and boomrun events are pulled out of storage and replaced if necessary. The gear and equipment used by the lumberjacks are also checked for safety. Steel-toed boots, leather leg chaps, climbing belts and gaffes (the spikes on the side of a climber’s shoes) need to be in tip-top shape to protect the performers. The special leather guards that are placed over a portion of saw blades to protect children as they crosscut saw with the

lumberjacks during the kid’s matinees are inspected and repaired if necessary. In addition to the lumberjack gear, the show site is prepared for the throng of summer guests that arrive with the warm weather. Bleachers, walkways and the handicap ramp are checked and the landscaping is refreshed. How about all that wood, the logs the lumberjacks saw and chop? Over 20 tons of aspen logs are hauled to the site throughout the summer. Logs need to be uniform in diameter and stripped of bark – the same guidelines adhered to in the Lumberjack World Championships. The first show of the season scheduled for school field trips is also open to the public. It’s this show that gets the team’s adrenalin pumped for the season. The staff is eager to entertain and display the athleticism they’ve worked hard to keep tuned during the winter months. With everything checked out, cleaned up and the staff eager to get another season underway, there is one element of the shows that cannot be controlled. That is the temperature of the water in Woodland Lake. “Logrolling and the boom-run are pretty darn cold events for us those first few shows of the season,” states Darby Hand, show manager. “That lake doesn’t really warm up until the beginning of July and no matter how good you are at those events, you’re going to end up in the water at some point.

The events and festivals

The Downtown is host to events throughout the year that encourage family and friends to gather. The Taste of Chocolate held in February challenges the saying “you can never have too much chocolate”! In March, the downtown becomes Irish with the St. Patty’s Day parade and the seven-day day Pub Crawl. The Second Saturday in June brings together three different enthusiasts … the car show brings out classic and antique car enthusiasts from near and far. The same day hosts the Art Fair on the Courthouse Lawn. New this year is the “Bikes and Burgers” showcasing antique motorcycles on the streets of downtown, a burger cook-off between the restaurants, and live music on the street

The arts and museums

You can spend an hour or more looking at the unique architecture and the arts found in the downtown. The Oneida County Courthouse with its spectacular dome is on the National Register of Historical Places. View art displays at ArtStart, a downtown destination arts and cultural center (former Federal Building). The Rhinelander Logging Museum (within the Pioneer Park Historical Complex) is an authentic logging camp. The Rhinelander Historical Society operates a museum at 9 S. Pelham Street. Championship smiles at Northwoods’ golf courses

W

hat separates golf courses in the Northwoods from those found elsewhere? Here, as in the metro areas, you will find the same carefully manicured greens, plush fairways, attentive staff and knowledgeable pros, along with clubhouses featuring your favorite drinks and food and fullservice pro shops when it’s time for a new club. But how about a pair of majestic eagles flying overhead or the wandering white-tailed buck to test your concentration! The incredible fresh air that is sifted by the towering red and white pine trees. The lack of urban noise and stress. The short wait to get onto the course. Affordable rates and reasonable meal prices. We have those all in abundance in the Northwoods. Golfers lured to the Northwoods have a choice of any number of golf courses, both 9 and 18 holes, so while you may have a favorite one or two, there are plenty of other nearby courses to test your game. Courses are friendly to beginners and women, while remaining challenging to those with low handicaps. Some courses date back decades with historic clubhouses, while others have been created or expanded in recent years. Now’s the time to reserve a tee time with your golfing buddies and hit the course! Men’s, women’s, senior and couples leagues are available. Later, it’s time to kick back and relax with the 19th-hole experience. The clubhouse is where you will also find great food, favorite drinks (including microbrews

that have surged in popularity in recent years) and a spirited discussion about your, and especially your partners’, recently finished round of golf. If you have young children or teens along, set them loose on the always-fun mini-golf courses and disc courses in the area. It’s where the kids can usually outplay dad and mom. And, when it’s time to close the eyelids – we have lots of comfortable lodging choices – you will dream of that hole-in-one you will hit tomorrow!

June 10 Grantsburg – Wildflower walk: 10am to noon. Crex Meadow Wildlife Area Educational Center. June 16 Alpha – Dairy Day: 10am to 5pm, Burnett Co. Cooperative. Free food samples; children’s games; live music; drawings. June 23-25 Danbury – Yellow River Echoes: Forts Folle Avoine Historical Park. Fur trade camp, food, vendors, demonstrations.

Ride the river of time back to America’s fur trade era DANBURY – Ever wonder how fur traders and Native people interacted? For example, how much in trade goods could one get for a prime beaver pelt? Or, deeper in the shadows of time, why an important trading site populated by two competing fur trade companies along the Yellow River suddenly disappeared from the pages of history?

Yellow River Echoes re-enacts the life of fur traders and their Ojibwe neighbors known to have been active during the North West and XY Company’s residence here during the years of 1802-05. Was it in fear of hostiles that they built their respective posts on the same site, or a matter of trading convenience? Questions, questions!

Get those questions, and more, answered during the Forts Folle Avoine Historical Park’s annual Yellow River Echoes set for Friday-Sunday, June 23-25. Embark on a journey of understanding and wonder as you and your family experience early wilderness life at the authentic site of two trading posts of Forts Folle Avoine.

View a “working fur post” atmosphere in and around the North West and XY Company posts. Visit an Ojibwe village, and observe the campsites of the 50 or so re-enactors as they prepare food as was done back then, participate in fur-trade era games and demonstrate primitive lifestyle skills. Some will be creating crafts all weekend. The Echoes will have a brigade of about a half dozen canoes, with a narrative about their construction and use in early 1800s. A special treat will be the debut of a 25-foot batteau -- a shallowdraft, flat-bottomed wooden boat used extensively across North America, especially in the colonial period and in the fur trade. They will serve booya on Saturday from noon to 5pm, sold by the bowl and by the bucket, along with beer and soda, at the visitor center. Forts Folle Avoine Historical Park is located at 8500 County Road U, Danbury. For more information, call 715-866-8890 or visit fahp@centurytel.net.

Osceola Bluff, Cascade Falls are twin attractions in Osceola

OSCEOLA -- For thousands of years, a limestone bluff (Osceola Bluff) that overlooks the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway has been an area landmark. Chippewa Indians camped here along the “ginseng trail” that stretched from Balsam Lake in Polk County to New Richmond in St. Croix County. The bluff is a resting place for resident bald eagles. White-tail deer walk its trails. Hepaticas, dogtooth violets and trillium grow in profusion. Today the bluff is owned by the Village of Osceola. You can hike to the top of the bluff, which rises 300 feet above the river. The trailhead can be found behind the Cascade BP. Park on Depot Road. The trail is gated against motor vehicle traffic; walk up the hill to find the trailhead. The trail is approximately 0.7 mile in length and goes through a hardwood forest. Spectacular views of St. Croix River and downtown Osceola, especially during fall leaf colors. Another natural attraction right in downtown Osceola is Cascade Falls, created by the drop of Osceola Creek some 25 feet. During evening hours the waterfalls is bathed in alternate colors of red, blue and yellow from spotlights on the bridge. The falls was a stop for excursion steamboats in the late 1880s, according to a historical marker at the site. A set of stairs on the main road (Hwy. 35) takes you into Wilke Glen, which is the base of the falls. You can walk up and touch the water falling from up above. Follow the trail along the Osceola Creek to the St. Croix River. Bring a fishing pole and be sure to have a trout stamp on your license if you want to fish for trout in Mill Pond or upstream above Mill Pond, which is on the opposite side of the highway from Cascade Falls.

Lake Chippewa Flowage is state’s largest wilderness lake HAYWARD – There’s a lot to love about the Lake Chippewa Flowage – fondly known as “The Big Chip.” It’s Wisconsin’s third largest lake (and largest wilderness lake) and with over 17,000 acres of water, it’s preserved in its pristine wilderness state for future generations to enjoy. In 1924, the Wisconsin/Minnesota Power and Light Company completed the dam across the Chippewa River, backing up the waters of 11 natural lakes, nine natural rivers and countless streams and ponds to form the Lake Chippewa Flowage. Chippewa Flowage fishing is some of the finest in the Midwest. It is home to the world-record muskellunge: a 69-pound, 11-ounce monster taken by Louis Spray in 1949 and upheld by the Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame as one of the best-documented world record musky of all time. Walleye, black crappie, musky and bluegill are the most popular species among Flowage anglers today. DNR fishery manage-

ment strategies are aimed at optimizing conditions for the reproduction, growth, and survival to preferred sizes of these species in particular. Yellow perch and smallmouth bass add positive elements of diversity to the Flowage fishery. Perch numbers are on the rise and the smallmouth fishery has become outstanding in the darker, river-connected waters of the eastern basin. Largemouth bass and northern pike are present in ever-increasing numbers particularly in the clearer, weedier western basin. With its massive size, over 200 miles of undeveloped shoreline and 140 islands, a lake map is highly suggested for navigation. A map of the flowage showing all resort locations, associate memberships, fish cribs, camping islands and original lake bids is also available. Go to chippewaflowage.com for more information. You may also consider hiring a professional fishing guide who can put you on fish in short order.

Scheers Lumberjack Shows is a great family adventure. Lumberjacks invite kids from the audience onstage during matinee intermissions to crosscut saw with the lumberjacks. -- Contributed photo

HAYWARD – It was 36 years ago that Fred Scheer and his brother Robert created a new form of family entertainment for northern Wisconsin visitors -- a lumberjack show. The two brothers and their four sisters had spent numerous summers as kids balancing and rolling on the logs on Lake Hayward in the bay of North Wisconsin Lumber Company. Their summer fun trained them to become fierce competitors in the logrolling event (birling) of the Lumberjack World Championships (LWC) held in Hayward every July. The young Scheers expanded their activities and became skillful at the boom run and pole climbing as well as other events that were part of the LWC. In 1981 the two brothers established the original Scheer’s Lumberjack Show and used their lumberjack skills to entertain area tourists. More than a demonstration, the show features a competition between two lumberjack teams as they do 10 different events: logrolling, pole climbing and crosscut saw among them. Cheering the teams on gets the crowd involved in the show and a little down home humor keeps everyone chuckling. The original venue for the show in 1981 was a small dock on the shore of Lake Hayward behind what was then called Windmill Square. There the show’s lumberjacks delighted small crowds and soon it became apparent the production needed more space. With encouragement from Tony Wise, the legendary Hayward promoter, Fred and Robert Scheer moved the show to its present location, Lumberjack Village. Fred is now the sole owner of Fred Scheer Lumberjack Shows and the Lumberjack Village. Training young athletes to be lumberjacks is still a fulfilling role for Fred. Through the years many lumberjacks have come, performed and moved on to other careers. Numerous world champion logrollers, pole climbers and boom-runners had their start as apprentices in Fred Scheer’s Lumberjack Show and the cast has always included world champion lumberjacks. A world champion log roller himself, Fred occasionally delights audiences by personally participating in a show. For all the years Scheer’s Lumberjack Shows has been in Hayward, it continues to draw crowds. One might say that a visit to northern Wisconsin isn’t complete without seeing a Scheer’s Lumberjack Show.

Take a guided tour of a state fish hatchery

Located in Spooner, the hatchery offers visitors an inside look in the process to grow the fiercest fish in the Midwest. But that’s not all that’s grown there. Owned and operated by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, the hatchery has the capacity of producing upwards of 2.5 million walleye fingerlings (1.5-2 inches long), 300,000 walleye fingerlings (6 inches long), as well as 20,000 to 50,000 muskie or northern pike fingerlings (8-10 inches long).

You can learn more about a lake system and ecology through several displays inside the Visitors Center, which has interactive learning stations. SPOONER – Take the family on a fun tour of the Gov. Tommy G. Thompson State Fish Hatchery, the largest muskie hatchery in the world. It was renovated and expanded in 1994-95. The visitor center with a live fish display is open year-round, with visiting hours 8am to 4pm Monday-Friday. Summer tours Tuesday and Fridays at 10am and 2pm.

A path from the hatchery takes you across the dam to Veterans Memorial Park on the Yellow River Flowage. Grills, picnic tables and restrooms make up the picnic area. You can fish off a pier or launch a boat from the landing. Like all state park facilities, this one too is handicapped accessible. The hatchery and park, 951 West Maple, can be reached from Hwy. 70 or Hwy. 63. For more information, call 715-635-4147.

In addition to the Finns, other European immigrant miners were Croatian, Austrian, Italian, Canadian, Swedish and Cornish. Today, only a handful of hand-hewn log structures remain. Restoration of two boarding houses, a single-family dwelling and a bachelor’s quarters have been completed, and others are in the midst of reconstruction. A tour guide takes visitors through the rooms furnished with period antiques reminiscent of the men and women who once lived here. Visitors will hear of the hardships endured by these pioneers of the Copper Rush. There is a small fee for the tours; donations are welcomed, too.

On Sunday, June 25 you are invited to “Log Cabin Days” from 10am to 5pm EDT at Old Victoria. They will be serving cinnamon rolls, made-from-scratch and fresh-baked in the historic woodstove, along with coffee or lemonade, sold all day as a fundraiser for Old Victoria. During the open house you can explore the log cabins of Old Victoria at your leisure and visit with the resident historian of the day. There are old-fashioned kids games at 1:30pm, with prizes. Mark your calendar for a return the third Sunday in August for their arts & crafts fair, featuring handcrafted arts & crafts, music and food. Enjoy cinnamon rolls and coffee cooked on the old cook stove. Old Victoria is located four miles southwest of Rockland on Victoria Dam Road in Ontonagon County. Watch for the sign on Highway 45 in Rockland.
