Editor’s Column What ‘Treasure’ Will You Find in the Northwoods? My adult son and I will be picking up a new hobby once the snow finally departs the Northwoods of Wisconsin where we live. A friend of his, who is a serious metal detector hobbyist, has offered to show us the ins and outs of using a metal detector and where he goes. I became more interested in metal detecting after using a rental unit last year to find metal stakes on a lot line. I had an all-toobrief, 15-minute window to scout a portion of my property before the unit had to be returned. Beep, beep, beep it went. I dug up pieces of an iron rod, old clasps for a shed, even a small strand of barb wire. Another strand is embedded deep within a white pine that stands 70 feet tall now. Nearly a century ago or so a homesteader must have kept a cow or two on the property, which is now within our village. The friend travels the U.P. with his metal detectors -- like any guy, you have to have more than one, whether firearm, dog, etc. -- principally looking for native copper. While that’s piqued my interest, I am leaning toward using the detector for coin retrieval.
Inside This Issue
I bring this subject up because the Northwoods (Wisconsin and UP) has vast amounts of public land for all to enjoy. While the pursuits of fishing, boating, ATVing, etc., regularly grab the spotlight in this publication, many other activities are available. Bird watching, photography, mushroom searches, agate hunting and the aforementioned mineral and coin detecting are pursuits that can be enjoyed by all ages in the Northwoods. In my travels across the Northwoods, I’ve come across a number of abandoned houses, or places where a structure once stood. Coins and rings, of course, would elicit a shout, but even trinkets or old square-cut nails would be fun to find. But be aware that the feds and state DNR folks frown on using metal detectors on their public lands and certain rules must be followed, so that’s something to keep in mind. Of course, get permission before going on private property. Like others, I’m getting anxious to find what “treasures” we’ll discover in the land they call Up North. Dean Acheson | Editor

Waterfalls are captivating all year long: whether surrounded by the summer’s greenery or the fall’s fiery hues, whether shimmering with ice crystals in the winter or roaring with snowmelt and nourishing rains in the spring.
are available here while the park is open (early May through late October).
brag about, so wherever your travels throughout Northern Wisconsin and U.P. Michigan take you this season, a waterfall will be but an easy drive away. There’s a lot of ground to cover, so we recommend that you get started on your quest for falls tout de suite.
These are very popular falls—and for good reason. There are six locations from which to view these magnificent falls, which boast a total drop of approximately 50 feet. There is roadside parking available, as well as picnic tables and an accessible boardwalk. Parking also at base of the large falls. Permit required.
Bond Falls Lucky for us, this land we call Up North has many waterfalls to Haight Township, Michigan
While exploring the falls, please use caution and your best judgment when traversing the earth and rocks near the falls; your path will likely be uneven and slippery. Enjoy the falls from an appropriate distance to get a full sweeping view, to keep yourself safe, and to preserve the sites’ pristine beauty.
Two Breathtaking Falls Near Paulding, Michigan Agate Falls Scenic Site Trout Creek, Michigan
Agate Falls is widely considered one of the most picturesque falls in the U.P. View these 40-foot-high falls via an accessible trail. Parking, water, toilets, and picnic tables

Superior Falls encompasses a 110foot height over several drops, just a few hundred feet away from Lake Superior. These falls straddle the Wisconsin–Michigan border, but they are most easily viewed from the Michigan side. From the parking lot, there is a trail with a rail to the viewing area. Please watch your step over the uneven terrain.
Copper Falls, WI

Potato River Falls Gurney, Wisconsin
This is another arresting waterfall, with a total height of 90 feet. The falls are at the town park, where there are rustic picnic and camping areas available.

Upson Falls Upson Area, Wisconsin
While these falls are a modest 18 feet in height, their draw lies in their sprawling width of 50 feet wide. The falls are located in Upson Town Park, which offers campsites and a picnic area.
Northwest Wisconsin Waterfalls Copper Falls State Park Mellen, Wisconsin
Visitors are drawn to Copper Falls State Park, in Ashland County, to visit several falls (some of which are 30 feet high) contained within it, but Copper Falls is also a popular place for swimming, cycling, and hiking. The park is open all year, but its concession stand closes for the winter.
Lost Creek Falls Cornucopia, Wisconsin
If you’re looking for a serene falls-viewing experience, visit Lost Creek Falls. The drop is a modest 15 feet, but the cascades offer an appealing view. In warm months, you can even wade in the creek and stand behind the falls. You will come upon the falls early in your hike along a 2.2-mile trail.
Cascade Falls Osceola, Wisconsin
If your travels bring you to Osceola, in Polk County, there is a lovely waterfall right near the center of town. Steps will lead you down to the gorge and Cascade Falls. The falls’ source is Osceola Creek, which flows through the Osceola Mill and into the St. Croix River.
A Gem in Northeast Wisconsin Long Slide Falls Pembine Area, Wisconsin
As the name suggests, these powerful falls rush through a narrow chute of handsome rock formations, with a steep drop of 50 feet. There is parking available close to the falls, and trails allow you to see the falls from both above and below. There are no fences or railings along the trail, so watch your step while viewing Long Slide Falls.

Rock Dam Falls Hiking Trail Will Reward Hikers
Among the many trails in the area is one relatively close to town. Pine Creek’s Rock Dam Falls hiking trail is located in the state forest northeast of Iron Mountain. This falls, large rock outcropping and small gorge is well worth visiting and has easy drive-up access. Bring water, especially if the temps are up there. Wear good walking shoes or boots. Here’s how to get there: From Iron Mountain, head west on U.S. 2 to M-95. On M-95 go north about four miles to Sportsmen’s Club Road. Turn east (right) and travel about two miles to Carney Lake Road (a “T”
in the road). Turn south (right) and go about one mile (you’ll go through a former gravel pit, but the road is well graded), and you’ll come to a “Y” in the road. Stay right. You will now be on a slightly rougher, curvy, hilly road (In summer this is no problem for cars.) This road is called Forest Service Road on Google Maps. Go about one mile. You’ll see a dirt lane on your left. On a large red pine is a sign that says Rock Dam. Pull into the turn-around and park. Take the path, cross over Hosking Creek wooden bridge, and Pine Creek and Rock Dam Falls are right there. You can follow the trail up the rocks going left of the creek up to the top, or you can cross two very narrow foot-bridges (a long pole is recommended) to the other side of Pine Creek and follow those trails. For information on other hiking trails, visit dickinsonchamber.com.

Book a Wisconsin Great Northern
Train Ride
TREGO – Whether you’re a dedicated train rider or wondering what a train ride is like, this is the year to hop aboard the Wisconsin Great Northern Railroad. After a two-year hiatus (due to COVID) the Wisconsin Great Northern is back with some special surprises to delight passengers. The family-operated excursion train is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. Among the new features is the introduction of America’s only all-private dining aboard the “dinner train.” Accommodating up to six people, each enclosed dining room is especially suitable for birthday and anniversary celebrations. A favorite of many, the “bed & breakfast train” returns with all firstclass accommodations. Like other trips, this one travels at a leisurely pace as it makes its way through farm fields, deep woods and along the scenic Namekagon River.
Northwest Region
Their renowned “family pizza train” will now feature pizzas made fresh onboard the train. Wisconsin Great Northern also has other train rides, including the “wine & cheese train,” and later in the year, the “Santa pizza train.”

The lull in luring visitors the past two years has allowed them to complete a major track improvement and upgrades to many of their cars. They are also putting the finishing touches on the complete rebuild of the Mark Twain Zephyr, a gleaming Art Deco passenger train from 1935. The Mark Twain Zephyr was one of nine stainless steel streamlined trains built by the Budd Company for the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy in the 1930s. These shovelnose trains forever changed train travel as they ushered in a new era of passenger railroading in North America. You can learn more about the project at the website, marktwainzephyr. com. The train depot is located four miles north of Spooner along U.S. 53-63. For more information and reservations (required) call 715-6353200 or visit spoonertrainride.com.

Craig Lake State Park Rewards Those Seeking Adventure, Solitude
44
BARAGA – Discover a touch of wilderness and adventure at Craig Lake State Park in Baraga County. It’s the most remote state park in Michigan’s DNR system. Access to the park itself is a bit of adventure, as the road is rocky. It’s advised you go with vehicles with high ground clearance. The park is located one mile west of Michigamme. The park contains six lakes and numerous small ponds along with a variety of wildlife such as deer, black bear, beaver, loons
and a portion of the Upper Peninsula moose herd. The park offers walk-in campsites (first come, first served) and other camping options, including yurts and rustic cabins. Don’t forget your fishing pole and bring only artificial lures. The 374-acre Craig Lake, largest of the six lakes, is known for its muskellunge, bass, walleye and northern pike fishing. It has six islands and high granite bluffs along its northern shore. Teddy Lake offers good panfish fishing. There are several portages ideal for canoes on both lakes. Keewaydin Lake offers the only boat launch in the park and is the only lake that allows motorboats; motorized boats are not permitted on any other lakes to preserve the area’s pristine qualities. Contact the park for more information. Not surprising, this park offers some of the most rugged trails in Michigan. An eight-mile trail loops around Craig Lake and offers some great opportunities to view wildlife, fauna and the lakeshore. A 7.5-mile section of the North Country Trail runs through the park. The trail covers some rough terrain, but is well worth the effort. This national route from North Dakota to New York includes more than 1,500 miles in Michigan, including those in Baraga County.
