Editor’s Column Recharge Your Life Batteries ‘Up North’ In the Northwoods you’re never very far from a refreshing cool lake. And, hey, there’s a bunch of trees here too. They must like company, because all across the landscape are woods and deep forests – perfect for family getaways and camping. Tons of trails weave their way through our county, state and federal forests. You’ll need a keen eye to see the deer trails, but there are plenty of developed trails for human feet, road and mountain bikes and ATVs/UTVs. The trails are well marked and take you to majestic waterfalls, lakes, scenic vistas and other attractions. There’s no shortage of things to do. This issue’s regional calendars offer numerous suggestions for summer and early fall activities. Interesting and fascinating artifacts and stories of

our very early years can be found at museums in nearly every community. The list of family fun possibilities seems endless – zip lines, golf courses, casinos, horseback stables, go-kart tracks, laser tag places, country fairs, bowling alleys, antique shops, wildlife parks, as well as pursuits of fishing and canoeing/kayaking/tubing. Shed those big city blues and make your vacation or getaway plans for a trip to the Northwoods. It’s not only a geographical place, but also a refreshing state-of-mind when you arrive at the land they call “Up North!” Dean Acheson, Editor

To Enjoy List

Motorcycle Rides, Festivals & So Much More! The Northwoods of Wisconsin and the U.P. of Michigan is awash in dozens of challenging athletic activities and fun celebrations during the next two months. We can’t think of a time when running and bicycling contests were so numerous as in 2022. Take that COVID-19! Check our calendars inside this issue for events/dates. Learn more about the following events, and others, inside this issue of Up North Action.

The fun is back and in a big way. The Northwoods Fall Ride on Sept. 15-18 will welcome thousands of motorcycle riders to Tomahawk and area communities. Tomahawk-based events range from the chamber’s bonfire & brat fry, to the always-popular Thunder Parade and downtown street dances, indoor bike show, and live music. Also, taverns and entertainment venues for miles around will also offer live music and specials on the menu. Mark your calendar to make a road trip to Crystal Falls in the U.P. for that community’s Humongous Fungus Fest on Aug. 1214. It’s in tribute to the local Armillaria bulbosa, also known as

the honey mushroom, that covers 37 subterranean acres. Scheduled is a kids carnival, along with a parade, car show, mushroom-themed food, mushroom foray, softball tournaments, and more. Over in Ashwaubenon (near Green Bay), during Artstreet you can watch master sand sculptors transform over 20 tons of sand into incredible sculptures during this art, music and food festival. It’s a full weekend, Aug. 26-28, of fine art, great music and delicious food.

Speaking of sand, check out the beach at Torpy Park in Minocqua on Saturday, Aug. 20. There, the Minocqua Dragon Boat Festival will see teams of paddlers and a drummer getting ready for dragon boat races on Lake Minocqua. No fire breathing creatures, but each team is hoping to smoke the competition – or just have a whale of a good time. You spectators (admission is free!) will have fun cheering on the racers and enjoying the live music, food & beer garden and fun activities for young “dragonlings.”

Aug/Sept 2022 | UpNorthAction.com

Keep Minocqua in mind, because the downtown becomes a giant food court for the annual Beef-A-Rama on Saturday, Sept. 24. It’s one-of-a-kind event, with people dressed in cow-themed costumes, or at a minimum, sporting black and white cow hats. There’s a Rump Roast Run, craft show, kids activities, live music and, of course, mouth-watering beef sandwiches for sale. We can’t wait! That’s our cue to mooo-ve up north to Ironwood, for one of the U.P.’s favorite events, the Gogebic County Fair, with fair dates being Aug. 11-14. The admission price is all-inclusive and gets you in for the carnival rides, grandstand shows and concerts at no extra charges. Food and games of chance/skill – well, pack a bit of extra money for those, especially if you have young kids.

We can’t help it… (steers and bulls are involved): it’s time to again mooo’ve on, this time to Rice Lake, where the Barron County Pro Rodeo Event comes to town on Sept. 8-10. The first night features lightning-fast barrel racing in WPRA-style action. The next two days will see thrilling PRCA action with bronco and bull riding, along with steer wrestling and calf roping. Round up the little cowpokes and enjoy some great family entertainment. Traveling north of Rice Lake, you’ll also be welcomed at Hayward and Cable, both of which have fall festivals. The annual Cable Area Fall Fest on Sept. 23-24 includes live music, a car/motorcycle/truck show, arts and crafts vendors, and food vendors, as well as Friday’s fish fry and Saturday’s pumpkin pecan pancake breakfast. Yummy! Save some room and time for the Hayward Fall Festival, also on Saturday, Sept 24. It’s an annual tradition that celebrates the changing of the seasons with fine art & craft booths, sidewalk sales, wonderful food vendors, a brat, beer and wine tent, kids activities, and live music in downtown Hayward.

Enjoy Gibson Island’s Easy Walking Trails CLINTONVILLE – Easy trail walking for the legs and a pretty sight for the eyes await those venturing on Gibson Island near Clintonville. Formerly private, the 25-acre island is now public and accessible by all via a 270-foot-long boardwalk. The undeveloped island sits between Grass and Pine lakes off Hwy. Y, about halfway between Clintonville and Shawano. The town of Belle Plaine-owned island offers great views of Cloverleaf Lake.

Northeast Region

There is an information kiosk and a walking trail through the woods, over the boardwalk and an isthmus, and then onto the island. The island has several trails totaling more than a mile through pristine woods. The only challenge for hikers is a slight incline.

14

Access is free and the island is open year-round during daylight hours. But there’s no camping, fires, picnics, alcohol, smoking, pets, horses or motorized vehicles allowed. The other cautionary note is access may be limited during the time eagles are raising their young on the island. Directions: From Shawano, south on Hwy. 22 about five miles, left on Hwy. Y for a mile, then turn left (east) on Cloverleaf Lake Road. There is a small parking lot about a mile east on Cloverleaf.

Tube the Pine and Brule Rivers FLORENCE – Florence County’s outdoor recreation offerings include the popular inner-tubing on the Pine River oxbow, as well as on the Brule River. The popularity of the “The Oxbow” is due to its near circular nature in which the river literally brings you almost back to your point of origin, thus enabling the group to forgo a vehicle at the exit point. The take-out is only a quarter mile from your put-in point so no shuttle is needed. The float takes 2-3 hours, depending on the water level. The scenic Pine River is designated a “wild river” with very little development along its banks. There are no real rapids on this float. When tubing the Brule River, you can put in at the Brule Dam Road and take out at Woods Road. For a shorter trip, put in or take out on Camels Clearing Road. Nature’s Water Park offers tube rentals at the Oxbow, shuttle service and guided paddle trips. Call 941-536-8090 for reservations. Maps are available at the Wild Rivers Interpretive Center.

The Sawbuck is a Favorite in the LOL Area LAND O’ LAKES – There’s a place in downtown Land O’ Lakes that has treats for your taste buds and treats for your garden. The Sawbuck welcomes visitors seven days a week with home-made muffins and specialty coffees, along with 20 different flavors of Cedar Crest ice cream. They also have a greenhouse and garden center. Bill and Brittany Clark purchased the business known as Forget Me Not Floral on March 1, 2021. They opened the next day as The Sawbuck and set out to renovate the building, including expanding the kitchen. Both are very familiar with the area. Brittany, originally from Port Washington, worked for some time for Ozaukee County. Her grandparents had a cabin on the Three Lakes Chain of Lakes. More recently, when she’s not at The Sawbuck, you may spot her expanding her photography business. Bill’s family has been on Duck Lake since his great-grandfather bought the property a century ago. Bill is a graphic artist and does commercial voice-overs. They are already supporting the community as a major sponsor of last year’s Oktoberfest. They also hosted a band during this summer’s Make Music Day. The Sawbuck was one of the first names out of over 200 they considered for their business venture. It’s reflective of the rich logging and hunting heritage of the area. It’s also slang for a $10 bill.

Looking for a house warming gift or even for yourself? The Sawbuck has a nice selection of craft beer and high-end wine and liquor, sure to please any recipient. Needing more suggestions? Check out the gift shop, featuring a wide selection of quality items from local artisans and craftspeople. Gift cards are available. When checking out their greenhouse, nursery and garden center, you’ll find lush perennials and annuals for the flower garden or pots, as well as veggie selections such as onion sets, along with heirloom and organic vegetable seeds. With the onset of fall, they will carry mums, pumpkins, corn stalks, Indian corn, gourds and straw bales. Various garden tools are stocked. The animals and birds are not forgotten either. The inventory includes bird seed, dog and cat food, chicken feed, cracked corn and when winter arrives, alfalfa. They are always looking to add something new in the gift shop and to their menu. Future plans include expanding the patio for additional outdoor dining. You can learn more on the web at thesawbucklando.com and on Facebook. Or call 715-547-6100. The Sawbuck’s summer schedule is seven days a week to 4 p.m., with extended summer hours to 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday (9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday). The business is located at 4270 Hwy. B, right next to post office in downtown Land O’ Lakes.

In addition to ice cream and muffins, the cafe serves Vienna hot dogs and chili cheese nachos. Coffee is available either bagged or fresh. Among the customers’ favorites is Affogato – a scoop of ice cream topped with a shot of hot espresso, as well as fresh brewed Colectivo coffee, frappes, lattes and other espressos.

Bill notes that customers come in early for coffee and to take advantage of the free high-speed Wi-Fi for their work or to catch up with friends and family. Invariably, they stay for lunch.

Snowshoe Baseball Offers Great Entertainment for Families LAKE TOMAHAWK – Don’t leave the Northwoods without taking in at least one game of snowshoe baseball – a beloved, yet zany game of softball played on actual snowshoes, using a 16-inch ball, and with no gloves. The local Snowhawk games are played each Monday evening beginning at 7:30 p.m. with the last game of 2022 on Aug. 29. The action is intense with players sometimes tripping up and falling to the sawchip surface as they reach for a fly ball, or run the bases. Admission is free with a butterfly net passed through the stands during the middle of the game. The net proceeds provide Snowshoe organizers with revenue used for expenses as well as donations to various charitable projects that help out community needs. A concession stand is sponsored by area service clubs. Food is available beginning at 5:30 p.m. The menu includes brats, hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hot dogs, soft drinks and coffee. You won’t be able to resist the vast array of homemade pies to top off your pre-game meal. Some nights there are 60 varieties to choose from. A popcorn stand is available each game.

Dragon Boats Will Rule the Waves

tent for young “dragonlings” provided by the Northwoods Children’s Museum.

In qualifying heats, three teams (each maximum of 20 paddlers and 1 drummer) race over the 300 meter-course in colorful “dragon boats.”

All proceeds will go towards hospital projects including a new service line for oncology chemotherapy infusions at Howard Young Medical Center, Woodruff. The proceeds will be matched by the hospital owner, Aspirus. Since the inaugural festival in 2016, the festival has raised more than $750,000 to benefit Howard Young Medical Center, Aspirus Eagle River Hospital, the Aspirus Tick-Borne Illness Center, and the Autism Services.

Spectators can catch all the action from Torpy Park, downtown Minocqua. The “Awakening of the Dragon” ceremony is conducted to “cleanse the area of competition, to bless the competitors and their boats, and to charge the boats and their crews with the Spirit of the Dragon and the Goddess of the Sea.”

If you want to get in the action, gather up family, friends, and co-workers and sign up at minocquadragonboat.com. No prior paddling experience is necessary. Help is offered for those wanting to join a team. Most teams also gather up pledges for the Howard Young Foundation.

Teams race from east to west, finishing in front of Torpy Park’s swimming beach by BJ’s Sportshop in an intense display of strength and teamwork. Spectator admission is free. There’s a beer and food court, live music, merchandise and souvenirs. Check out the interactive activities under the children’s activity

Volunteers are needed to do everything from holding boats to putting up signs, from greeting guests to getting teams ready to race. Register to be a volunteer at minocquadragonboat.com or contact the Howard Young Foundation at 715-439-4005.

WOODRUFF – Have you heard the story of the “Million Penny Parade,” or about high school geometry teacher Otto Burich who was the force behind the 1953 parade, or about Dr. Kate Pelham Newcomb, widely known as the “Angel on Snowshoes?” It’s all spelled out at the Dr. Kate Museum in Woodruff. The country doctor was the “Angel on Snowshoes” for reaching patients when winter roads were impassable for vehicles of the time. Her remarkable career was the subject of a 1954 episode of Ralph Edwards’ television show, “This is Your Life.” You can view that episode at the museum. Nearby, at the corner of 2nd Avenue and Hemlock Street, is the “World’s Largest Penny,” constructed to commemorate the success of the “Million Penny” campaign in 1953 to raise funds to construct Lakeland Memorial Hospital, the area’s first hospital. There’s more to see at the museum, including items about the Arbor Vitae-Woodruff grade school and high school and about the town of Woodruff itself. The museum also has exhibits about Nestledown,” a favorite Woodruff business of the past; a nostalgic look at the “Golden Age of Television,” a jukebox playing 1950s favorites, and a player piano. The Dr. Kate Museum is open the second Monday in June through the Friday prior to Labor Day. Hours are Monday-Friday 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is by donation.

No matter how good a log roller is, he or she will end up in the water eventually. It’s a cold swim before those first few shows of the season.

Logging Lore Comes Alive at Scheer’s Lumberjack Shows

Northcentral Region

WOODRUFF -- Weeks before the official start of summer, Scheer’s Lumberjack Shows staff begin preparing for the upcoming season. This year marks the 41st year that Fred Scheer’s Lumberjack Shows has been entertaining visitors on Woodland Lake in downtown Woodruff.

38

A spin-off of the famous Scheer’s Lumberjack Shows that began in Hayward, the Woodruff show features the same world-class athletes in performances identical to the Hayward venue. Preparing the site for the summer performances involves maintenance to guarantee the safety of performers, as well as guests. The climbing poles that rise 60 to 90 feet into the air are inspected and the pads are secured in place.

of saw blades to protect children as they cross-cut saw with the lumberjacks during the kids matinees. In addition, the show site is prepared for the throng of summer guests who arrive with the warm weather. Bleachers, walkways and the handicap ramp are checked and the landscaping is refreshed. How about all the logs the lumberjacks saw and chop? Over 20 tons of aspen logs are hauled to the site throughout the summer. Logs need to be uniform in diameter and stripped of bark – the same guidelines adhered to in the annual Lumberjack World Championships.

“When you are climbing that pole at record speed, the last thing you want on your mind is its stability,” says Cassidy Scheer, world champion pole climber.

The season starts Memorial Day weekend and runs through Labor Day weekend. The Lumberjacks are eager to entertain and display the athleticism they’ve worked hard to keep tuned during the winter months.

The log dogs on which the lumberjacks stand and swing razor sharp axes in the underhand chop are checked for structural safety. The specially turned cedar logs used for the logrolling and boomrun events are pulled out of storage and replaced, if necessary.

With everything checked out, cleaned up, and the staff eager to get another season underway, there is one element of the shows that cannot be controlled. That is the temperature of the water in Woodland Lake or Lake Hayward.

The gear and equipment used by the lumberjacks are also checked for safety. Steel-toed boots, leather leg chaps, climbing belts and gaffs (the spikes on the side of a climber’s shoes) must be in tip-top shape to protect the performers. They inspect and repair the special leather guards that are placed over a portion

“Logrolling and the boom-run are pretty darn cold events for us those first few shows of the season,” explains show manager Zac Tom. “That lake doesn’t really warm up until the beginning of July. No matter how good you are at these events, you’re going to end up in the water at some point.”

It’s Hunker Down Time Focus is on the Underdown Races GLEASON – The Underdown Trail running race and “Thunderdown in the Underdown” mountain bike race will give outdoor athletes a run for their money come Saturday, Aug. 13. The two races paired up last year for an epic run. This year, both runners and bikers will again experience challenging trails across a wilderness landscape carved by glaciers that swept the area thousands of years ago. The Underdown Trail Races feature a half-marathon, marathon and 50K trail run. The racecourse is primarily singletrack over a bunch of hills, past isolated lakes and across dozens of boardwalks in the Lincoln County Forest known as the Underdown Recreation Area. The mountain bike races will follow the running event. A 33-mile single track loop combines the best of the old school with zippy machine-built renovations. They riders will pedal past four lakes, five bermed boardwalks and over 70 hills, all the way to the Prairie Dells overlook and back. Other ride options include 13 miles and 100 miles.

Drift Along with the St. Croix or Namekagon River

SAWYER COUNTY – It’s summertime – hazy and lazy days – and tailor made for tubing the St. Croix or Namekagon rivers, which together offer 252 miles of clean water gliding past a lush green landscape. The St. Croix National Scenic Riverway provides a wealth of scenic views and is a haven for wildlife. Imagine floating the day away along the gentle current and riffles of this scenic river way! Witness the beauty and tranquility along these Northwoods rivers as dragonflies swirl about on the breeze above you and native fish swim below. Travel at the pace of the river current for a wonderful day on the waters of these pristine rivers.

Northwest Region

If you decide to enjoy tubing you should wear a bathing suit or quick drying shorts and shirt. Old sneakers, aqua socks, or river sandals will protect your feet from rocks. A towel and dry change of clothes packed in a plastic bag come in handy at the journey’s end and you can put your wet suit in the bag. Protect yourself from the sun with a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. Don’t be one of those who leave the river with a severe case of sunburn. Bring along food and water, too. Don’t forget your sense of adventure as you travel at the pace of nature for the day.

52

Remember: No glass beverage containers, and carry out your trash. Though it appears as if anyone can do it, tubing is recommended only for people who are able to swim. For the non-swimmer, life jackets are essential. Many outfitters along the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway rent tubes, as well as canoes and kayaks. Contact them for rates, locations served, and reservations.

Don’t Miss a Highlight of the Summer – a Lumberjack Show HAYWARD – It was 41years ago that Fred Scheer and his brother, Robert, created a new form of family entertainment, a lumberjack show, for northern Wisconsin visitors. The two brothers and their four sisters had spent numerous summers as kids balancing and rolling on the logs on Lake Hayward in the bay of North Wisconsin Lumber Company. Their summer fun trained them to become fierce competitors in the logrolling event (birling) of the Lumberjack World Championships (LWC) held in Hayward every July. The young Scheers expanded their activities and became skillful at the boom run and pole climbing, as well as other events that were part of the LWC. In 1981, the two brothers established the original Scheer’s Lumberjack Show and used their lumberjack skills to entertain area tourists. More than a demonstration, the show features a competition between two lumberjack teams as they do 10 different events, including logrolling, pole climbing and crosscut saw. Cheering the teams on gets the crowd involved in the show and down-home humor has everybody chuckling.

Fred is now the sole owner of Fred Scheer’s Lumberjack Shows and the Lumberjack Village. Training young athletes to be lumberjacks is still a fulfilling role for Fred. Through the years many lumberjacks have come, performed and moved on to other careers. Numerous world champion logrollers, pole climbers and boom-runners had their start as apprentices in Fred Scheer’s Lumberjack Show and the cast has always included world champion lumberjacks. A world champion log roller himself, Fred occasionally delights audiences by personally participating in a show. Scheers Lumberjack Shows is a great family adventure. Lumberjacks invite kids from the audience onstage during matinee intermissions to cross-cut saw with the lumberjacks.

For all the years Scheer’s Lumberjack Shows has been in Hayward, it continues to draw crowds. One might say that a visit to northern Wisconsin isn’t complete without seeing a Scheer’s Lumberjack Show.

Aug/Sept 2022 | UpNorthAction.com

Northwest Region

The original venue for the show in 1981 was a small dock on the shore of Lake Hayward, behind what was then Windmill Square. The show’s lumberjacks delighted small crowds and it soon became apparent the production needed more space. With encouragement from Tony Wise, the legendary Hayward promoter, Fred and Robert Scheer moved the show to its present location, Lumberjack Village. After that the Woodruff location opened up.

straight up. For the ultimate in leg burn, pause for a moment or two to enjoy the vista and then tackle the ski jump steps. The stairs are open year-round for the public. We don’t know if there’s a word that adequately describes the next leg burn option, but if you are in fine physical shape you might be tempted to compete in the annual Pine Mountain 500. No leisurely walk up the stairs here, as you will be racing against others to be crowned “King or Queen of the Mountain.” The 2022 premier athletic event will take place Saturday, Aug. 6. From the top of Pine Mountain, participants will race down Kramer Drive to Lower Pine Mountain Road/Hibbard Street before turning on Pine Mountain Road and racing to the Pine Mountain 500 for the next leg. The event is chip timed and participants will receive an overall and a Pine Mountain 500 time. “Dual Duel” participants will do it twice! Registration ends Aug. 5. Gogebic Country Club Celebrates 100 years IRONWOOD – In 1917, mining company executives and business owners in the Ironwood area were flush with cash, but had few opportunities for “cultured recreation.” Their attention turned to starting a golf club. On March 30, 1917, articles of incorporation were filed and the Gogebic Country Club (GCC) was born. The new organization raised funds by issuing stock, soliciting donations and offering lifetime memberships.

By 1934, the Elks Club had taken ownership of the GCC clubhouse. A separate organization was needed to manage the golf course property. On May 15, 1934, the non-profit Ironwood Clubhouse Association was formed. For the next 79 years, the two corporations would operate the golf course and clubhouse side-byside. In the 1980s issues between the two corporations arose over ownership and revenue streams. In 2003, those issues were settled, and on Feb. 27, 2003, the two corporations merged into one non-profit corporation named the Gogebic Country Club-Ironwood Clubhouse Association.

The merged corporation continues to operate the 18-hole public golf course, which offers great golfing for beginners and avid golfers alike. This year the club is observing 100 years in operation. For more information, visit golfgogebic.com.

By the early 1920s the first 5 holes of the course were built, but now a clubhouse was needed. Architect Hubert Nelson created plans for the clubhouse. In March 1922, the club hired master mason Anton Urli, and construction of a rugged-stone clubhouse began. Completed in 1924, the clubhouse’s total cost was $30,000.
