‘The Paavo’ is Back

HURLEY – The organizers of the Paavo Nurmi Marathon event have bumped it up a couple of notches this year with a couple of new events when the Paavo takes place Saturday, Aug. 12. The race is named after Paavo Johannes Nurmi, a Finnish middle-distance and long-distance runner. The “Flying Finn” dominated distance running in the early 20th Century.

Veterans of the point-to-point, mid-August marathon fondly know it for its “heat, hills and humidity.” The Paavo is certified as a Boston Marathon qualifying event. Other traditional events that day are a half marathon, 2-person and 5-person relays. The marathon and relay start line (7 a.m.) is in Upson on Hwy. 77 at Hoyt Avenue. Runners will finish on Silver Street in downtown Hurley. For more details and to register, visit thepaavonurmimarathon.com.

New events for spectators are the Best Cheering Group and Best Decorated Yard (along the course) with 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes going to the winners of each category.

All are invited to join the festivities at the “Finnish Line” with food, beverages, kids activities (including a bounce house and bungee jumper), artisans & crafters and live music.
