Welcome, to the Tomahawk Fall Ride for MDA Welcome to another Tomahawk Fall Ride for MDA – now in its 31st year of bringing to the area thousands of motorcyclists eager for some great riding and fun in the Northwoods. The result of this influx of riders and other visitors is a tremendous boost to the local economy of small towns and cities this extended weekend of Sept. 13-16.

signature Fall Ride event is the Thunder Parade late Friday afternoon. Starting from the Tomahawk school complex, an undulating line of motorcycles heads east through the rural countryside for an 18-mile cruise before they head to downtown Tomahawk for the street parties featuring two bands, dancing, food and refreshments.

If you were to shout out, “Anyone with a Harley,” there would be a forest of raised hands. But the Fall Ride also boasts a significant number of other makes of motorcycles; from Victory, to Honda, to Yamaha, to Can-Am and others. Though their brand names may differ, the riders are all united in their love of the open road.

Ticket sales are brisk for the MDA raffle; all hoping for the winning ticket to take home the 2012 Harley-Davidson bike or the weekend package to 2013 Daytona Bike Week. Proceeds from the raffle benefit the MDA organization. This year there is a significant change to the Fall Ride – the bike drawing takes place Saturday, 5 p.m. There will be no organized activities at SARA Park on either Thursday or Sunday. That just means a bit more open road riding for you!

Did we mention they also love good food, music and shopping? Businesses in an 80-mile radius of Tomahawk, as well as the city, are welcoming visitors with specials, cookouts, live bands, games and contests. Time it right, and Mother Nature will have the countryside ablaze in autumn colors of red, yellows and oranges. But even if Colorama is a bit late, the scenery is still breathtaking – pockets of deep blue lakes and pristine state and national forests that stretch for miles along lightly traveled roads that twist and shout through the Northwoods. For many riders and spectators alike, the

Hundreds of Bikes Take Part in Rolling Thunder Parade

(TOMAHAWK) – Upwards of a thousand motorcycles will move in unison on an 18mile trek through Tomahawk and its surrounding countryside on Friday, Sept. 14 – heralding the start of another great Tomahawk Fall Ride for MDA weekend.

Bikes begin to line up at 5 p.m. at the Tomahawk School District complex on Kings Road. The organizers’ goal is to have all the bikes ready for the parade by 5:30 p.m., so please plan accordingly. All makes of bikes are welcome. There is no cost to join the parade, which goes on rain or shine. Immediately after a 5:55 p.m. blessing of the bikes by local clergy and a performance of the National Anthem, riders embark on their 18-mile ride.

Local and state law enforcement ride their bikes at the front and rear of the parade, which includes units from the Tomahawk Fire Department. Dignitaries from Harley-Davidson Company, members of the Harley Owners Group (HOG) and the Harley-Davidson Employee Riders Association are among the first riders.

Aptly named the “Thunder Parade,” the sound of roaring motorcycles brings thousands of people to Tomahawk anxious to witness this once-a-year spectacle. After the parade is done, it’s time to enjoy the free street dances in downtown Tomahawk. The Tomahawk Lions invite the visually impaired and Tomahawk area residents on Medicare disability to experience the Thunder Parade first-hand as a passenger on a Harley owned by a member

Parade Route The parade starts at the school complex, goes east on Kings Road to Hwy. D, then to Hwy. H, north on H to Hwy. A. Once the last parade bike turns onto Wisconsin Avenue, the street is closed off to all motor vehicles except bikes and pedestrians and the bands begin to play!

SARA Park Activities Raffle Drawing for Bike Takes Place Saturday

(TOMAHAWK) – Like a colossal hive, SARA Park buzzes with live music, food, ticket and merchandise sales, wandering bikers, and the arrival and departure of bikes, during the “Tomahawk Fall Ride for MDA.” It’s the place where riders meet up, chat about past and future rides and admire the bikes of others. SARA Park is located on the west side of Tomahawk; food and drink vendors and bands are set up outside, and ticket sales and other activities, including the Vic Ferarri live concert, are held here. The expansive grounds is also where the Demo Rides originate. Whether you are a first-time Fall Ride visitor, or a rider with many Fall Ride pins, it’s important to note that this year, SARA Park activities will be held only on Friday and Saturday – including the drawing of the raffle bike late Saturday afternoon! An MDA official noted that attendance on Thursday and Sunday has been relatively low in recent years, so they decided to concentrate on having a “great Friday and Saturday” in 2012. So, be sure to get your bike raffle tickets before the Saturday drawing!

Harley-Davidson Demo Fleet

(TOMAHAWK) – Harley-Davidson will help kick off the 2012 Tomahawk Fall Ride to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association with the 2013 Bike Demo Fleet. This year’s Tomahawk Fall Ride participants will have the opportunity to test ride HarleyDavidson’s newest arrivals through the scenic Wisconsin Northwoods. The Demo Rides originate at SARA Park on the west side of Tomahawk. Register for free rides Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (As we note in stories elsewhere in this special Fall Ride Guide, there are no Thursday or Sunday activities planned this year at SARA Park.) Harley-Davidson representatives will staff the event and lead the rides. Riders must have a valid motorcycle license to demo the bikes and sign a waiver form. The event is also an official H.O.G pin stop so H.O.G. members can pick up their commemorative pins.

New in 2012: MDA Raffle Bike Drawing is Saturday

(TOMAHAWK) – Those hoping to win a 2012 Harley-Davidson Electra Glide Ultra Classic have plenty of opportunities to buy tickets, but the drawing this year will be Saturday, Sept. 15, 5 p.m. at SARA Park. That’s a departure from the traditional Sunday noon drawing. Harley-Davidson Motor Company, Tomahawk Operations donated the raffle bike to benefit MDA. The bike features a unique custom paint skin. Second prize is a weekend getaway to the 2013 Daytona Bike Week, including airfare and hotel. The bike can be seen, at various times, at J&L Kountry Style/ Deacon Shores, 3800 Hwy. 51, Hashaw; R Store, 1727 E. Somo Ave., Tomahawk; Lincoln County Cycles, 851 N. 4th St., Tomahawk, and at BP, 1329 N. 4th St., Tomahawk. Tickets are on sale now at numerous businesses in the Tomahawk area for $5 each or five for $20. Just a reminder: you must be 18 years old to buy tickets or to claim the prize. Tickets will also be sold at SARA Park and at the Harley-Davidson’s Kaphaem plant, the latter during the open house there. Last year, the North Central Chapter of MDA took in $134,000 from fundraising efforts at SARA Park and the Kaphaem plant’s open house.

(IRMA) – The Harrison Hills area – including Lookout Mountain – just south of Tomahawk and east of Irma is a riot of color during autumn and an ideal destination to feel the wind against your face as your bike follows these lightly-traveled rural roads.

From Tomahawk, go south on either Hwy. 107 or Hwy. 51 to Irma. Turn left (east) and pick up County Road J. It takes you east and then south where you will pick up Hwy. 17. Turn left and continue to Gleason. Take a break at Gleason for lunch; afterwards, continue on Hwy. 17 north to County Road D. This road will take you through the Harrison Hills area, dotted with many small lakes. Continuing on County Road D you will head north before turning west. County Road D will take you directly into Tomahawk. Or, pick up County Road H, head south, merging into County Road V which then meets County Road J. A right hand turn on J takes you back to Irma and either on Hwy. 51 or Hwy. 107 back to Tomahawk.

Music to Rally By

(TOMAHAWK & NOKOMIS) – Live music and motorcycle rallies go hand-in-hand and Fall Ride is a perfect time to groove the tunes at SARA Park, downtown Tomahawk and Nokomis Park. The public is invited to join riders in celebrating the Fall Ride. A number of taverns throughout the Northwoods also welcome you with local bands playing into the wee hours. Check their ads in this year’s Fall Ride Guide produced by 5 Star Marketing & Distribution, Tomahawk. When the Thunder Parade wheels stop rolling Friday night, the party gets going in downtown Tomahawk the first of two nights of Street Dances. After bikers park their rides on West Wisconsin Avenue, barricades go up so that only cycles and pedestrians can enter the area. Admission is free and the public is welcome. Come hungry, as there will be food tents and a beer tent located on each end of the main drag. In addition, a number of vendors will be selling motorcycle-related gear. Many downtown merchants also stay open late Friday and Saturday nights to accommodate shoppers. Pik’s Pub and The Liquor Store – also at opposite ends of Wisconsin Avenue – host bands for the street dances both Friday and Saturday evenings. Enjoy a cold one under the stars but remember you must be in the roped off area, and drinking is allowed there only from 5 p.m. to midnight Friday and from noon to 9 p.m. Saturday. All other drinking must be inside a tavern, supper club or a beer garden according to city ordinance. Law enforcement will be enforcing this regulation as well as the prohibition of drinking by minors.

More about MDA

Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) is the primary recipient of funds raised during the Tomahawk Fall Ride. Last year, the organization netted $134,000 from the Fall Ride. Donations to MDA provide help in many ways: • Clinics — expert specialized medical care • Research — cutting-edge scientific investigations seeking treatments and cures • Support — help locating equipment and coping with challenges

• Camp — a barrier-free week of fun, friendship and laughter for kids • Knowledge — up-to-date information about research and health care

• Advocacy — representing the needs of the neuromuscular disease community MDA is the world’s leader in research and services for neuromuscular diseases. It was founded more than 50 years ago to serve people with neuromuscular disease through comprehensive programs of patient care and research. This includes clinic visits, equipment such as wheelchairs and funding a summer camp for children with muscular dystrophy. MDA has a nationwide network of hospital-affiliated clinics. As a community service, MDA clinics offer dialogistic services to anyone suspected of having a neuromuscular disease. If a diagnosis is confirmed as one of the many diseases encompassed by

Q MDA’s program, therapeutic and rehabilitative follow-up care is provided. The association also seeks to increase knowledge and awareness of neuromuscular diseases among scientists, physicians, nurses, therapists and the general public through a series of annual symposia. In its first 40 years, MDA spent about $670 million on its Patient and Community Service program. Over the same period, the association funded more than 12,000 research projects at a total cost of about $325 million. Locally, MDA sponsors clinics in Green Bay, Marshfield and Marquette and has volunteer chapters based in Green Bay and Wausau. MDA’s summer camp for children is held each June in Green Lake. Since its inception, the Tomahawk Fall Ride and Harley-Davidson Open House have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for this association. All money donated to MDA from the event goes to the organization’s North Central Chapter, headquartered in Green Bay. The Fall Ride contribution, which makes up about one-third of the chapter’s annual fundraising, is used to provide care and research for clients within the district territory. The rally features various rides giving attendees options in type, length and scenery in the rides. The Dealer Fun Run starts in August with the goal of five stamps from five different dealers to get a ticket entered in the Fun Run drawing. The poker run will be approximately 110 miles with five stops along two stretches of the best roads in the center of the state. The Pin Ride option was available only to pre-registrants. Other, shorter rides, will feature rally sponsors.

H.O.G. Wild in Wausau

(WAUSAU) – The Wisconsin H.O.G. Rally will be coming to Wausau, Thursday through Saturday, Aug. 16-18, with headquarters at Harley-Davidson of Wausau. It will feature three days of riding and fun. Members from more than two dozen H.O.G. groups are expected to participate. Registration is available on-site (pre-registration is closed) so remember to bring your national H.O.G. membership card with you. Live music will start Thursday evening and continues at noon Friday through the end of the day, resuming at noon on Saturday. The parade will be Friday evening preceding opening ceremonies. Headliner bands are Vic Ferrari and Spicy Tie, both top notch cover bands.

Some of the highlights: Thursday – Dealer party, 4-9 p.m. at H-D of Wausau, start of rides and live music from 4-9 p.m. Friday – Demo rides 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., live music 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., State Patrol Demo, games, bike parade starting at 6 p.m. from Cedar Creek Mall, headliner band 7:30-11 p.m., and lighted bike contest, 9 p.m. Saturday – All rides, demo rides 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., biker bingo, State Patrol Demo, live music noon to 1 p.m., games 1-3 p.m., HOG roast dinner, 4-6 p.m., closing ceremonies, and headliner band, 6:30-10 p.m. In addition, Harley-Davidson, Tomahawk Operations will have an open house at its Kaphaem Road plant for WI H.O.G. riders on Thursday and Friday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The poker run goes right past the plant. Harley-Davidson Plant Open House Harley-Davidson Tomahawk Operations announces its annual open house will be Friday, Sept. 14 and Saturday, Sept. 15 at the Kaphaem production facilities on the east side of Tomahawk. Hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. both Friday and Saturday. Admission is free.

No cameras are allowed inside the plant, however, they are permitted in the Tour Center. Bags or packages such as knapsacks, luggage, and camera bags are not allowed inside the plant.

The Kaphaem Road facility produces windshields, both assembled and non-assembled. Diversified Products, also located at the Kaphaem Road facility, includes sidecar production, Genuine Motor Parts & Accessories production and custom painting (one robotic and two manual paint lines). The tour includes the ABB Robotic Cell display. See tour guidelines below.

Fully enclosed shoes, low-heeled 1â&#x20AC;? or lower are required. Toecaps will be available for those with open toe footwear, along with safety glasses.

Official Tomahawk Fall Ride and Harley-Davidson Tomahawk Operations merchandise can be purchased during the open house. Raffle tickets for the Harley bike and Daytona Bike Week getaway packages -- the top prizes of the MDA raffle â&#x20AC;&#x201C; will be available at the open house. Tickets are $5 each or five for $20.

The Tours During the plant tours, visitors are asked to follow the guidelines for both safety and protection of manufacturing operations:

Children under 12 are welcome in the Tour Center but are not allowed on the factory tour. An adult must accompany visitors under 18 at all times.

Fall Ride week is not the only time you can visit the Tour Center at the Kaphaem plant. Tours begin at regular intervals between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., when the last tour starts, Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays. Reservations are required for groups of 10 or more. Call (877) 883-1450.

‘Rumble through the Woods’ (TOMAHAWK) - MDA’s third annual Rumble through the Woods organized ride will be Saturday afternoon, Sept. 15, taking Fall Ride participants on a 60-mile scenic route through the Northwoods. Riders will start to line up at 3 p.m. Saturday at SARA Park; the ride itself starts at 3:30 p.m. Registration takes place Friday and Saturday at SARA Park.

This year’s ride will not have a midway stop as in year’s past. Fire Department Sponsors Open House, Harley Raffle

(MANITOWISH WATERS) – With only 3,500 raffle tickets to be sold, your chances to win a 2012 Harley-Davidson Electra Glide Classic are as good as it gets, courtesy of the Manitowish Waters Volunteer Fire & Rescue Department’s annual HarleyDavidson motorcycle raffle. The winning ticket for the 2012 Electra Glide Classic will be drawn at the conclusion’s of the fire company’s open house Sunday, Sept. 23, noon to 3 p.m. Activities take place at the firehouse just north of the Manitowish Waters Community Center on Hwy. 51. Purchase tickets, $10 each, at local businesses or by calling (715) 543-2144. You need not be present for the drawing. The motorcycle is valued at over $19,000 and was obtained through the support of Northern Lights Harley-Davidson in Arbor Vitae. The Wisconsin sales tax is paid out of the ticket proceeds. This is the 16th year of the bike raffle. Proceeds help fund equipment upgrades for the volunteer fire department and ambulance service. During the open house, enjoy a cookout with hot dogs, brats and refreshments. A big screen TV will be available for football fans. Packers play Monday night football that week so the game may be (gasp!) the Bears vs. Rams. Families are encouraged to bring children to look at the fire trucks and other equipment. Firefighters will demonstrate equipment and answer questions. There will be miscellaneous raffles throughout the open house.
