U.P. Michigan Region Explore the Other Side of Copper Peak

BESSEMER – No question that the view from top of the ski flying structure at Copper Peak is breathtaking and well worth the trip alone. But don’t overlook the fun that the mountain bike trails at Copper Peak can offer. Riders of all abilities will have a great single-track experience. There is a more mellow grade, good for beginners, at the start of the trail.

The ride is not a technical trail system, but it is made fun, challenging and exciting by 600 feet of elevation gain over the 5.5mile machine-built flow trail system.

Your ride begins at the base of the ski jump landing hill where parking is available. You will descend to the Black River to enjoy the river scenery. From there, winding trails lead you on that 600-vertical foot ascent to the top of the ski jump, where you can take in the beautiful 360-degree view and have a look at the massive ski jump structure. Rest up for an exhilarating descent back to the base, with dozens of bermed corners, jumps, bridges and fun play features along the trail.

The Copper Peak Trails are maintained by the Sisu Dirt Crew. For more information on the Dirt Crew and local trails visit SisuDirtCrew.com.

Copper Peak is located at N13870 Copper Peak Road, just off County Road. From U.S. 2 going east and just before Bessemer, turn north onto Powderhorn Road. Follow the guided signs to bring you to County Road 513 and follow that for approximately 10 miles to the entrance of Copper Peak.

Aura Jamboree Returns with Full Schedule

L’Anse – The Covid pandemic took a bite out of last year’s Aura Jamboree, but the organizers are planning to return this U.P. favorite musical event to its previous standing this summer.

The 44th annual Aura Jamboree on Friday, July 15 and Saturday, July 16 will again feature traditional acoustic music at the historic Aura Community Hall. There will be folk, bluegrass, ethnic, classical and country western tunes. The event typically draws more than 50 musicians, ensembles and individuals from Michigan, the surrounding states and elsewhere.

Performers will take 15-minute turns on the indoor stage Friday from 5 p.m. to midnight and Saturday from 10 a.m. to midnight. The traditional evening dances will be both Friday and Saturday in the community hall. There is a dance workshop from 1-2 p.m. in the pavilion. Outside, groups of musicians enjoy informal jam sessions on the shaded grounds.

Food and refreshments will be available on the grounds. No pets or BYOB allowed, according to organizers. The community hall is located at 13759 Townline Rd., L’Anse. For updates, go their Facebook page, Aura Community Hall. U.P. Michigan Region

The season’s opening night on July 1 features entertainment sponsored by the Ironwood Chamber of Commerce. After the unveiling of Mary Burns’ award-winning Ancestral Women Exhibit: Wisconsin’s 12 Tribes and the Emberlight Photographers show at 4 p.m. in the Historic Depot Museum, saunter over to the Ironwood Theatre for screenings of award-winning and fan favorite films from the 2021 International Film Festival. After thrilling the audiences in Broadway Under the Stars last summer, Emma Stratton is back July 30 at 7:30 p.m. and July 31 at 2 p.m. at the Historic Theatre. All That Jazz takes the audience to the world of vintage Hollywood glamor and classic Broadway belting of music by Cole Porter, Jule Styne, Harold Arlen, Kander & Ebb, and George Gershwin. Hometown star Miles Mykkanen and Jordan Jones-Reese (Broadway’s Miss Saigon and Ain’t Too Proud) join her for an unforgettable evening of music.

Then on Aug. 5 and 6, Mykkanen and Adam Rothenberg take the stage for Sing Happy with personal stories and show-stopping music. Mykkanen is finishing a banner year: Three productions at the Metropolitan Opera, the release of his first CD and acclaimed debuts across stages in North America and Europe. Pianist Adam Rothenberg joins Miles for familiar and unknown German art songs, opera arias, Broadway showtunes, and French cabaret.
