Editor’s Column Time to explore the great Northwoods
The great Northwoods is a four-season vacation destination, but summer undoubtedly is when most people come north to experience the thousands of cool, pristine lakes, do a bit of fishing, roast marshmallows over the campfire, and drink in the beauty of the forests. Spirits rise as these travelers cross that “tension zone” that aptly describes not only the change in vegetation (towering pine trees anyone?) but also the area where the cares of the big city and job are left behind. The Northwoods is chock-full of captivating views, even during the evening hours when the stars seem like polished diamonds in the sky. Especially when a meteor blazes across the sky leaving everyone temporarily speechless! With our many pubs and fine dining restaurants, this isn’t the time to be counting calories. And if it is, hoist your favorite bev-

erage, because there are many, many miles of paved bicycle and off-road mountain bike trails to put you back in shape for the next meal. We’ll give a shout-out here for the many chamber of commerce and visitor center staff who will help you discover what’s around the next bend in the road. These “travel guides” give out free advice; have tons of literature, including brochures and maps to hand out. We, too, at Up North Action magazine welcome you. As you turn the pages of this magazine, we hope you’ll discover your next adventure. Check out the dining and lodging businesses, and other businesses, who are advertising services and products. They are anxious to meet you with a smile and a sincere welcome. Know that no matter who you are or where you come from, you’re invited to explore the land we call “Up North!”

The popularity of the “The Oxbow” is due to its near circular nature in which the river brings you back almost to your point of origin, thus enabling the group to forgo a vehicle at the exit point. It’s about a 3-hour float with the take-out only a quarter mile from your put-in point! The scenic Pine River is designated a “wild river” with very little development along its banks. When tubing the Brule River you can put in at the Brule Dam Road and take out at Woods

The Lumberjack Steam Train is still rolling LAONA -- The Lumberjack Steam Train, in Laona, is in its 102nd year on the job. The vintage Vulcan steam engine carried logs to the sawmill, but it now is there for your enjoyment. A ride in the period passenger cars or a caboose will bring you to the Camp 5 Museum Complex, a visit that will provide a variety of entertaining and educational activities.
The Logging Museum is a step back in time to the days when horses and oxen moved logs to the rail line, and tough men pulled crosscut saws and swung axes to provide the lumber to build a nation. A working blacksmith shop will show how tools and horseshoes were made in logging camps to keep the logging operation going. The kids and adults alike will enjoy the petting zoo, and there is a scenic and educational Green Treasure Forest Tour that shows the results of modern sustained logging. The Cracker Barrel Gift and Ice Cream Shop provides tasteful gifts and souvenirs as well as delights your sweet tooth. For a nice lunch, the Choo Choo Hut Restaurant is available as well. The Wild West comes to the Lumberjack Steam Train when the Cowboys arrive on July 21. You can bet that they will rob every train that leaves the depot, and you will enjoy the beautiful horses, vintage clothing and guns. Don’t worry, you won’t have to hide your wallet, it’s just for fun! The summer season for the Lumberjack Steam Train runs until Aug. 18. The train leaves the depot at 11am and every hour on the hour, with the last run at 2pm. The vintage depot is located on U.S. Hwy 8, just west of Laona. The Mercer Lions Club puts on the fundraiser right after Loon Day in Mercer. The “turtle” comes into play because it’s held on the Turtle River. The “racers” are pint-size yellow rubber ducklings. The ducks have numbers that correspond to numbers on tickets that you can purchase in advance or at the event until 12:30pm. The race gets underway at 1pm when hundreds of rubber ducks are dumped upstream of Rugger’s Landing (the event headquarters) with the first seven crossing the finish line rewarding ticket holders cash prizes. There are consolation prizes for the slowest four. There will be food, live music, kid games, duck piñatas busting for the kids, dunk tank, raffles, paddle games and refreshments at the Tiki Bar. Tickets are $5 for one duck or buy a flock of 5 for $20. First prize is worth $1,000, 2nd $500, 3rd $200, 4th $150 and 5th-7th $50 each. The last four ducks wagging their tails across the finish line are worth $50 each. Contact Lion Bob Downing at 715-583-4578 for more information or tickets. Earn your badge of honor at ‘Muggy Buggy’ 5K Run/Walk MINOCQUA – We know you can chew gum and walk at the same time. But chew gum, run the highest hills, traverse the deepest swamps and swat “skeeters” and black flies hovering overhead – all at the same time! Now, that’s a challenge. And one you can meet head-on at the annual timed trail running race, the Muggy Buggy 5K and/or the more challenging Muggy Buggy X that follows, both at Minocqua Winter Park on Saturday, July 7. The Muggy Buggy Fun Run 5K Run/Walk at 9am is a soft surface trail run/walk through the rolling landscape and boreal forest around Squirrel Hill. The 5.15 km (3.2 miles) traverses a spectacular course encompassing eskers, hills and forest pathways. The
Muggy Buggy 5K has male and female divisions with 10-year age classes (the youngest must be at least 5 years old on race day). Then at 10:30am, if the flying critters haven’t completely drained you, take on the Muggy Buggy X. This race will include new obstacles as well as serious ups and downs, mud, creeks, ponds, more mud (don’t wear your Sunday best!) and a variety of challenges over a 2.5 km (1.5 mile) course. There’s a post-race cookout, and the events wrap up well before noon to ensure you have the majority of the afternoon and evening to celebrate the holiday parades and fireworks! Stop by at the Kiwanis Club’s brat stand for a tasty meal. Proceeds from the brat stand supports their mission to help children in the Northwoods. After visiting the art and craft show, visitors can stroll the two blocks to Campanile Center to see more artwork and demonstrations of local talent. En route they are encouraged to stop at Park Side Gallery where co-sponsor Bob Metropulos Jr., has his artwork on display and for sale. A short distance away is the Minocqua Museum, another co-sponsor, where visitors can see reminders of the storied history of the resort town of Minocqua, which also was the center of a lumbering boom in the early years.

“It’s not just a summer job, you have to stay in shape during the off season or you won’t meet Fred’s expectations in June when the show opens. You really don’t want to disappoint Fred.” The team of Scheers Lumberjacks for 2018 includes five young men with a passion for athletics and competition.
For many, their ultimate goal is to compete in the Lumberjack World Championships (LWC) held annually in Hayward. Prior to being accepted as a performer in his show, Fred Scheer requires potential lumberjacks to meet certain athletic qualifications. Once hired the aspiring lumberjacks are trained in the various events, then finally allowed to perform in front of live audiences.
Often Fred’s star performers compete in the LWC held in Hayward every summer, and the boom run has been one of their favorite events. What is the boom run? Seven logs are chained together and stretched between two docks and across a span of water. At the sound of the timer, competitors race across the log bridge, reach the opposite dock, circle a barrel and then run back across the same logs. The logs are loosely secured to each other and swing and roll as the racer attempts to run across without falling into the water. Speed and balance are keys to success in the boom run.
Training the aspiring lumberjacks has always been a key activity for Fred Scheer, who says, “I really enjoy seeing these young people reach a skill level that allows them to compete.” Spectators, young and old, often remark to the lumberjacks that having a role in Fred Scheer’s Lumberjack Shows must be a really cool summer job. According to show manager Christian Graves,
The boom run and nine other events are featured in the Scheer’s Lumberjack Show, which combines humor and athletic competition in a family-friendly venue.

PRESQUE ISLE – The Van Vliet Hemlocks’ newly developed trail system gives visitors the opportunity to explore and experience what was once abundant in Wisconsin -an old growth hemlock forest. The west trailhead is located 1.4 miles north of Crab Lake Road on West Van Vliet Road. The east trailhead is located 1.25 miles north of Crab Lake Road on East Van Vliet Road. The site’s 400 acres and mile and a half of undeveloped shoreline on Van Vliet Lake represent a rare remnant of the northern hardwood–hemlock forest, once the largest and most characteristic of northern Wisconsin. It retains many of the characteristics of old-growth forests, such as large live trees, snags and fallen trees on land and water. Walk along undisturbed cedar swamps, bog lakes, climb scenic eskers and take in the richness of the plant and animal life that abounds in this special place. The Wisconsin DNR has added Van Vliet Hemlocks to the state natural area program.

More information about the park is available at theforts.org or call 715-866-8890.
The Historical Park is a living history site with two fur trade posts, North West Company and the XY Company reconstructed on the actual site known to be active from 1802-05, along with an authentic Ojibwe Indian Village. When the fur traders packed their canoes with precious furs and began the arduous journey north after the long cold winter at Forts Folle Avoine, their destination was Grand Portage. There, for a few weeks before preparing for the return trip, they could relax as they took part in the much-anticipated rendezvous celebration. Today, in an authentic re-creation at the Historic Park dozens of fur trade camps with a variety of characters fill Sayer’s Field and Trader’s Row. As was true 200 years ago, goods are “traded,” stories told, and fun times enjoyed by rendezvous campers, traders and visitors.

66 Polk County How do you craft a log cabin? Find out at the Frederic Museum FREDERIC -- No man was better at crafting a log cabin with an axe than Syver Torkelson, an immigrant from Norway, whose expert craftsmanship is reflected in one of the log cabins that now resides at the Frederic Museum in Frederic. Torkelson used a hand axe to cut and shape all of the logs for a new cabin for his son Edward. George Sornson purchased the cabin and restored the cabin to its original condition. He donated the cabin to the Frederic Area Historical Society in 2003 so that it would be preserved and enjoyed by future generations of local residents and visitors. The Society moved the cabin the following year to a site adjacent to the depot/museum and the old library building.

That’s where you can find it today, along with a number of other interesting and fascinating displays, including a Soo Line caboose, decked out in bright red and white colors. There’s a display of cooper tools inside the depot/museum. Such tools were used by tradesmen called “coopers,” who created the ends (headers) of casks and barrels, which then were shipped by train to barrel manufacturers. The original Frederic Depot was built in 1901 for a sum of $1,525. Passenger service through Frederic ended on June 25, 1961, and scheduled freight service ended in 1980. The Soo Line Depot building was erected in 1901 and served the village and surrounding area until 1982.

In fact, you may see some of the same lumberjacks who compete in the world championships. Since its onset, Scheer’s Lumberjack Shows has been a training ground for many athletes who became world champions. Founders of the show, Rob and Fred Scheer both claim world championship titles: Rob a three-time world champion in the 90foot pole climb; Fred a four-time world champion in the men’s log roll and two-time champion in the men’s boom run.
• Shows last approximately one hour & een minutes • Open seating - arrive early in peak season
Fred’s son Cassidy was raised in the Lumberjack Bowl where both the LWC and Fred Scheer’s Lumberjack Shows are held. Part of Fred Scheer’s Lumberjack Shows for 14 years, Cassidy holds three pole climbing world championships and a men’s boom run world championship. According to Cassidy, “When you perform an event two times a day, five days a week all summer long as part of a lumberjack show, you get a lot of practice in front of a crowd. You can get really good if you put in extra time working on your personal technique.” Dustin Beckwith, Sean Duffy, (yes Congressman Sean Duffy) Roger Burger, Brian Linville and Charlie Fenton are just a few more lumberjack world champions who learned their skills as performers in Fred Scheer’s Lumberjack Shows. The LWC in Hayward isn’t the only world-class lumberjack event in which Fred Scheer’s Lumberjack Show performers have competed. As part of Fred Scheer’s Stihl Pro Team, Cassidy Scheer and Dustin Beckwith captured gold and bronze medals in the Superjack event at the 2005 ESPN Great Outdoor Games competition. Fred Scheer is quick to point out that the lumberjack athletes deserve all the credit for their achievements: “I just teach them the skills, they practice and develop their own techniques. It’s really fun to watch them take off.”

Located in Spooner, the hatchery offers visitors an inside look in the process to grow the fiercest fish in the Midwest. The fish hatchery is not only the state’s largest cool water facility, it is the world’s largest musky (muskellunge) hatchery. In many years, the hatchery produces more than half the muskellunge and walleye stocked throughout the state. With 46 rearing ponds, the facility may produce 200,000 to 2.5 million small walleye, 100,000 to 350,000 larger walleye, 35,000 to 60,000 large musky, and an average of 21 million white sucker fry in a typical year.

From 60 to 95 percent of the eggs successfully hatch (in the wild, that success rate is only one-tenth of 1 percent). From there they go into indoor transfer tanks and then finally into outdoor rearing ponds. The growing fish are stocked either as fry or fingerlings (3-5 inches long) into lakes all across the state. You can learn more about a lake system and ecology through several displays inside the Visitors Center, which has interactive learning stations. A large mural of a lake scene shows plant and animal life above and below the water surface. A walking path from the hatchery takes you across the dam to Veterans Memorial Park on the Yellow River Flowage. Grills, picnic tables and restrooms make up the picnic area. You can fish off a pier or launch a boat from the landing. Like all state park facilities, this one too is handicapped accessible. The hatchery and park can be reached from Hwy. 70 or Hwy. 63.
