U.P. Waterfalls Putting on a Show
IRONWOOD – As summer approaches, there’s still time to see the U.P. waterfalls in their full glory, as they surge with winter snowmelt and spring rains. The Ottawa National Forest is home to 18 named waterfalls and many unnamed ones located throughout the forest – all so beautiful at this time of year. For more information on these waterfalls, visit the Ottawa Forest website: fs.usda.gov/Ottawa. Once there, click on “Recreation” and then to the “Find a Waterfall” button. Here you will find complete descriptions of the falls, including the best ways of access to each. There’s a cluster of waterfalls just north of Ironwoods that brings lots of visitors each spring and summer. Known for its spectacular waterfalls, idyllic beaches, scenic hiking trails and tranquil campground, the Black River Harbor Recreation Area is a popular destination throughout the year. (Note: Due to road work, the campground is closed until July 8, 2022. There is still full access to the harbor, beach area, suspension bridge, and the waterfalls.) Some 20 minutes of travel on the Black River Road will bring you to perhaps the most visited falls -- Great Conglomerate, Potawatomi, Gorge, Sandstone and Rainbow. Potawatomi and Gorge viewing platforms are only a short distance on a paved trail from the parking area. Rainbow Falls is the last of the falls on the Black River before the river enters Lake Superior. Named for the mist-created rainbows that form over the river from the 40-foot drop over the rocks, Rainbow Falls has an observation deck but does require about a half-mile hike and down a stairway to reach the viewing platform. Capturing the rainbows that form over this waterfall makes this one of the most alluring and frequently photographed of these five Black River waterfalls. Venturing too close to the river and its waterfalls can be dangerous, especially in the spring when water is high and the ground and rocks are slippery. Be careful!

Treat Dad to the 44th Annual Car And Tractor Show in Iron River
IRON RIVER – Car and tractor aficionados from every corner of the U.P. of Michigan will be showcasing their individual pride-n-joy at the 44th annual Father’s Day Car and Tractor Show in Iron River on Sunday, June 19. Sponsored by the Classic Farm Machinery Club of Iron County, the show will run from noon to 3 p.m. that Sunday and will be located on Genesee Street in downtown Iron River. Admission is free for the public. Last year’s show drew nearly 100 antique and classic car and tractor owners, some with multiple entries. Club president Fred Hauser says he’s hoping for at least 125 this year. Registration is at 9 a.m. Again, this year, organizers will present prizes donated by area merchants or cash that had been donated to buy the prizes. For more information, call Hauser at 262-914-2316. On display will be mostly “Detroit Iron,” including muscle cars and hot rods, but you’ll also see motorcycles and even some of the latest models. Some of the vehicles showing up are unrestored; some have been fully restored; others have been customized. A sure highlight will be the appearance of the 1929 Ford pickup truck, with milk cans in the back. In addition to tractors, there will be antique farming and machinery equipment. There will be food wagons and downtown restaurants and taverns will be open. Retail stores will be open for shopping. Genesee Street in the vicinity of the show will be blocked off from through traffic, so show attendees can safely cross the street. Locals and visitors can get an early peek at the many classic and antique cars registered for the Sunday event, when the car parade sets off at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 18 from the Riverside Plaza next to the former Shopko store. Hauser also coordinates “cruise nights” from Genesee Street every Tuesday in August from 5-7 p.m.
Monthly & Tagged Fish Contests Underway on Lake Gogebic
LAKE GOGEBIC -- Catching a tagged walleye on Lake Gogebic could net you a top prize of $1,000! The Lake Gogebic Area Chamber of Commerce’s tagged fish contest, which started in May, runs through mid-September. It offers cash prizes to lucky anglers who catch one of the nearly 30 tagged fish this season. In addition to the one $1,000 tagged fish, the Lake Gogebic contest features an additional eight tagged walleyes worth $500 each. Another 20 tagged fish (walleye, bass, perch and pike) each carry a $250 reward. To be eligible, anglers must purchase a fishing contest button for $5, available at any Lake Gogebic area business, prior to the catch. The same button can be used to qualify for the chamber’s monthly fishing contest.
Monthly Fishing Contest
There is another fishing contest for anglers plying the waters of Lake Gogebic. The chamber’s monthly fishing contest offers anglers a $25 chamber gift certificate if they catch the largest walleye, perch, smallmouth bass and northern pike during the month. The “chamber bucks” are redeemable at chamber member businesses.
Successful anglers can bring their fish to one of the participating businesses on the lake to have it registered. Be sure to register your fish even if it isn’t a whopper, because it may be the winning fish for that month. around the lake. Surrounding the 36-mile shoreline are opportunities for hiking among the waterfalls. For general information and fishing opportunities in the area, visit lakegogebicarea.com or call 888-464-3242.
Find Fun at the Lake Trout Festival
L’ANSE -- The 15th annual Baraga County Lake Trout Festival in L’Anse will take place Saturday, June 11, which coincides with Michigan’s Free Fishing Weekend. No fishing license is necessary on that weekend. (In case of inclement weather, the fishing tourney will be held Sunday, June 12.) Baraga County has been named the Lake Trout Capital of the Great Lakes and the free (no admission charge) festival will combine the Keweenaw Classic Fishing Tournament with family-oriented events such as Trout Run/Walk, kids’ run, kids’ carnival, kids’ fishing pond, coloring contest, 3-on-3 basketball tourney, pie-eating contest and a junk art sculpture contest. Food and drink booths, coffee and baked goods, watching the “Duck Pluck,” shopping at the art and crafts fair, and listening to music by area talent will ensure fun for all, regardless of age. The Classic Fishing Tournament will have separate classes for lake trout and salmon with many cash and merchandise awards, as well as door prizes. There are discounts available for early registration. All events will take place at the Waterfront Park and marina in downtown L’Anse.
L’Anse is located on beautiful Keweenaw Bay of Lake Superior on US Hwy. 41 in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. The UP has been named one of the Top 50 Vacation Destinations by Disney Travel.
