rom the earliest times to present day, the history of the Northwoods of Wisconsin has been written by the lakes, rivers, forests and changing seasons. Bands of Native Americans were the earliest inhabitants of Manitowish Waters, drawn by its abundant wild rice, fish, game and even maple syrup that they harvested to sustain generation after generation. The earliest European voyageurs and fur trappers were next on the horizon. In the 19th Century, these explorers traded with the natives and mapped the territory for the next influx of immigrants. The Northwoods’ vast timber resources that stretched over the land seemed endless. Timber barons sent their work crews steadily into the Northwoods, felling giant red and white pines, floating them down raging rivers in the spring, and later, bringing them out of the woods by oxen pulling huge loads of cut trees that towered above them. Lloyd &

Audrey Voss

Entrepreneurs saw promise in other ways: some through homesteading; others sensing the desire of city folk to relax, fish and hunt in the pristine and beautiful Northwoods. Sportsmen and wealthy families traveled by rail from Chicago and Milwaukee to rail hubs, then were taken by horse and wagon, some even by boat, to reach their vacation destination. The first lodge was built on Island Lake in 1880. By the first few decades of the 20th Century, Manitowish Waters and the rest of the Northwoods swelled in population as more and more vacationers sought to escape big city life. Small towns grew noticeably bigger, as resorts needed more goods and workers, including fishing guides. During Prohibition, the lodges and halls filled with “one-armed bandits” and “rum runner” spirits. The local law rarely enforced the federal laws against alcohol and gambling. Famous and infamous guests were legendary. Among the latter, were members of the Chicago mob. For the most part, they behaved themselves while “Up North” and didn’t attract much outside attention.

A notable exception occurred in 1934, when the FBI caught wind that the John Dillinger gang was staying at the Little Bohemia Resort. A trap was laid, but Bill Monroe Dillinger escaped. The resulting shootout left town constable Carl Christensen riddled with eight bullet wounds. He survived, got $3,500 from the federal government for his troubles, and started his own resort and bar on Hwy. 51. The tavern is still running today and is called the Cozy Cove. Their Bluegrass Festival in July, still brings in big name “Bluegrass” bands from around the country. Visitors can still see the bullet holes in the walls of Little Bohemia Resort; Christensen’s scrapbook and other historic artifacts are housed at the Koller Library and at businesses throughout town. The town’s colorful history includes tightrope walker Bob Loveless and a caged bear at the Howling Bear. Eventual civic development led to a school, cemetery and town hall. The airport came after World War II when public enthusiasm for aviation burgeoned. Skiing Skeeters - 1962 With the advent of the snowmobile in the ’60s, the Northwoods officially became a fourseason vacationland. Hwy. 51 was vastly improved, slashing the time for visitors from Chicago and Milwaukee to travel north.

HISTORY

A Genuine Northwoods / Manitowish Waters Welcome!

The Manitowish Waters Skiing Skeeters – one of the oldest amateur water-ski clubs in the U.S. – was established in the late 1950s. They sponsored, and won, the first statewide barefoot tournament held in the U.S. in 1964. National publicity of the event established Manitowish Waters as the “Barefoot Capitl of the Midwest.” Today, Manitowish Waters is also famous for its cranberry industry, its location on the Great Wisconsin Birding and Nature Trail, and its breathtaking “Legendary 10-Lake Chain of Lakes.” It is a community connected by a love for nature, its sparkling waters and numerous recreation opportunities. We invite you to make Manitowish Waters your vacation destination and to build your own memories. Bad Dash

I

f you missed the Northwoods Bad-Dash Mud Run last year, you missed a lot of fun and excitement! So this year make sure you enter or be there to cheer on the runners in the fourth annual Northwoods Bad-Dash on Saturday, Sept. 5, 2015. The Manitowish Waters Chamber of Commerce and the North Lakeland Discovery Center co-sponsor the fourmile adventure run that features 12 obstacles, including a mud crawl, cargo net and fish crib climb and much more. The course takes runners through the beautiful wooded trails of the Discovery Center, traverses through downtown, has a little fun in the gravel pits and incorporates a few challenges along the snowmobile trail and ends at the Community Center. Among the obstacles participants

will long remember are the “Log Slog,” “Icy Hell,” “Musky Bait” and for the finale, the “Lambeau Leap.” Awards will be given to Best Lumberjack and Lumberjill (or a combination thereof), Most Flair, Best Superhero, Best Team Get-Up and Truest Wisconsinite. Participants must be at least 16 years of age for this FUN un-timed event. To register or for more details, go to www. NWBadDash.com or view their Facebook page. Or give us a call at 715-543-8488 or visit www.manitowishwaters.org. After the Bad-Dash, shop our unique stores, certainly stop for lunch at one of our fine restaurants and spend some time at one of the scenic parks before a return for the postrace party. BIKING

Biking / Pedal through your own epic adventure

H

ave you noticed? The Northwoods is experiencing a revolution in outdoor recreation with bike trails expanding all over the place! Manitowish Waters completed the paved bike trail extension (8.3 miles) in late summer of 2014 to Boulder Junction. The trail continues through Sayner to St. Germain for a total of 45 miles of paved bike trails. The trail extension links the Manitowish Waters Trail with those in neighboring towns for a virtual armada of riding possibilities geared for families, touring groups, dedicated riders and competitive events. The terrain varies but almost all of the Manitowish Waters Trail favors young children on bikes. One couple commented to a chamber staffer last year that they had ridden bike trails all over the world, including in China, and thought our trail they had ridden from Manitowish Waters to Boulder Junction was the “nicest we have been on. High praise indeed for a trail system built entirely with private donations!

1 2 M a n i t o w i s h Wa t e r s . o r g

Manitowish Waters Township has three biking complexes: the Manitowish Waters Trail, North Lakeland Discovery Center Trails, and the WinMan Trails. The latter two are mountain bike trails that are fun for families and for skilled riders. The trails take you through the Northern HighlandAmerican Legion State Forest, flush with towering white and red pines, lakes and streams, wildlife, wild flowers and rare highland tamaracks. The chattering of red squirrels will greet you, as will the whisper of the wind through the pines. The same wind will bring you the sweet smell of a wood fire as you pass a campsite, the laughter of small children playing on the sand beach flanking one of those pristine lakes that dot the forest, and perhaps the cries of a common loon serenading its mate or warning its young when a bald eagle soars above. The paved trails are sited off the vehicular road, but even there the traffic is light as an eagle feather. There is designated parking at trailheads for vehicles with bicycles.

district and Rest Lake Park. From there, the trail goes east as it shadows Hwy. K. The Community Center has a nice playground, restrooms and water. From North Lakeland Elementary School, the trail resides almost entirely on state land. An arch bridge spans Rice Creek, a favorite of trail users who stop to take photos. There’s a restroom facility and picnic tables at the bridge site. Later on, two separate boardwalks totaling 600 feet span wetlands. North Lakeland Discovery Center Trails The Discovery Center is across from Rest Lake Park and just off the paved bike trail. 12 miles of off-road, multi-use bike trails take riders on quiet wooded trails around the lake and along the Manitowish River. Suited for beginner and intermediate riders, and open to the public from dawn to dusk, the trails wind through forests and along bogs and shorelines. While there, explore the Interpretive Trail and bog boardwalk. And don’t miss the annual wilderness “Just Tri It” triathlon held July 4th this year! Located 1.5 miles east of the intersections of Hwy. 51 and County Rd. W. WinMan Trails

BIKING

The WinMan Trails are the perfect compliment to a growing biking community in Manitowish Waters. This new system sits on 1,300 acres and has quickly established itself as a silent sports mecca, providing some of the best mountain biking in the state. With 7 miles and more to come, these purpose-built trails feature flowy singletrack, berm turns, rock features, and freeride structures. In addition, there are miles of logging trails to customize your ride, traveling from forest to lake or from woods to town. The site’s natural terrain features rolling topography and unique ecology, making this a blast to recreate in. Trailhead/parking is 4 miles north of the Discovery Center at the intersection of Hwy. W and Hwy. J.

The Cranberry Marshes

T

of Manitowish Waters

he Manitowish Waters Cranberry Growers consists of five marshes ranging in size from 63 acres to 186 acres, totaling about 600 acres. These marshes were started soon after World War II in an area of Wisconsin that was not yet known for cranberry production. These pioneers

undertook building what is today – a major scenic and economic contributor to Wisconsin’s Northwoods.

CR ANBERRY MARSHES

The cranberry marshes surround the northeast 1/3 of Little Trout Lake, a pristine 1,000 acre nearlyuninhabited lake, which is located along the southern edge of the Manitowish Waters town line. The pine paneled building gives testimony to the resiliency of the original owner, Carl Christensen, the Manitowish Waters constable who was shot in the FBI shootout with Dillinger in 1934.
