Heed the call of the Northwoods
Feel the warm July sun on your back and the cool, refreshing waters of the Northwoods beneath you. Our Northwoods lifestyle is calling you, whether it’s the haunting cry of the loons on the lake or the whisper of the wind through the pines high above your campfire.
What are you waiting for! Dive in. Or raft. Or rock the waves with a personal watercraft. Or float. Or boat. Or take a scuba diving class and pretend you’re a fish. Or do it all. With thousands of lakes, dozens and dozens of rivers and streams in the Northwoods, the water sports and recreation possibilities are measured only by the amount of fun you want to have. Back on shore, it’s time to find out what the landlubbers are doing.
The possibilities are endless: Festivals and fairs, museums and heritage sites, Dean S. Acheson go karts and miniature golf, wildlife parks and zip lines, shop-till-ya-drop and garage sales, tents and campfires, craft brews and Friday fish frys, mountain bike trails and road bikes, sleep-ins and suntans, pow wows and stock car races, romantic strolls and cuddles on the beach, fudge-to-die-for and hand-scooped ice cream, golf and pickleball, art and antiques, natural wonders and clear skies, friendly smiles and helpful folks. See what you’re missing? It will be here waiting for you. In the land they call Up North!

Elegant wooden boats to cruise Minocqua Chain
MINOCQUA – Rare and valuable Chris Crafts, Centurys and Gar Woods – their rich mahogany and gleaming brass and chrome reflecting the rays of the sun – will be like beacons to hundreds of visitors drawn to the 22nd annual Antique & Classic Wooden Boat Show Friday through Sunday, July 25-27 in Minocqua. The show averages upwards of 50 entries and features antique and classic wooden boats and classic glass boats. Restored boats dating back to the early 1900s are registered and displayed in the water at this unique show. Up on dry land, you will see more wooden boats, canoes and perhaps a “woodie” car or two. The weekend includes food, refreshments and live music on the patio of The Boathouse. Brett & Frisk will play 11am to 2pm Saturday and Sunday. Captains will parade their boats past the crowd gathered Friday night, shortly before the 7pm Min-Aqua Bats water-ski show. The boats will be docked at the piers of The Boathouse throughout the weekend. Captains will at times be out on the water to cruise the Minocqua Chain of Lakes. (Due to liability concerns, there are no rides for the public.) Admission to the show is free. Proceeds from the concession sales, along with donations, will benefit the Multiple Sclerosis Society. For more information, call Al Hanley at 715-453-4511. 5 Star Marketing & Distribution, which publishes Action magazine, is one of the show sponsors.

Meet the ‘critters’ at Northwoods Wildlife Center
MINOCQUA – The Northwoods Wildlife Center is where you’ll meet Hortense the turkey vulture, Woody the wood turtle and Hook the painted turtle. How they came to be at the Wildlife Center in Minocqua as told by their staff will be entertaining as well as thought provoking. The wild creatures that come to the Wildlife Center are sick, injured or in some cases as youngsters due to their mother being killed or because people mistakenly think the babies are abandoned when in fact the parent is nearby. In all cases, the center’s staff takes

Muggy Buggy 5K & Xtreme Mud Run
MINOCQUA – Forget about the deer flies and mosquitoes – it’s the giggling kids with squirt guns lined up near the racecourse who will get you during the seventh annual Muggy Buggy 5K Run/Walk and fourth annual Muggy Buggy X. Both will be Saturday, July 5 rain or shine at Minocqua Winter Park. Truth be known, on a hot July day, the water will be welcomed (maybe they’ll pick off that deer fly chewing through your scalp) as you run or walk on ski trails through the rolling landscape and boreal forest around Squirrel Hill. Registration for either the 5K or its extreme version (see below) gets you a commemorative bandana (first 200 registered runners) and a burger, brat or veggie burger. Awards to top three overall finishers. Race-day registration for the 5K ends at 8am, and the race starts at 9am. Muggy Buggy X Registration for the extreme version of Muggy Buggy ends at 10am, with the race start at 10:30am. Unlike the earlier “sissy” version, this race includes serious ups and downs, mud, creeks, ponds, more mud, a variety of obstacles, hot lava pits with fire breathing dragons (well, maybe not that extreme!) and other assorted odds and ends to shake things up a bit over a 2.5km course. This will be quite possibly the toughest event you’ll ever do under 3km! Don’t wear your “Sunday best” but do wear your war paint. Either way, you’ll have a ball and there will be a hose to clean you up after completion. Register or get more information at minocquawinterpark.org.

MINOCQUA – When it’s time to get the tastiest, thickest steaks, chops and brats for the summer cookout, turn to TJ’s Butcher Block & Market, now in their new location with a much bigger store boasting a modern and spacious interior. Located just a sausage-link distance from its former location, TJ’s Butcher Block continues to offer fresh-cut prime and choice meats, along with a wider selection of wine, beer and liquor, Wisconsin award-winning artisan cheeses, traditional spices and unique rubs (both wet and dry), seafood and artisan bread baked daily from Eagle Baking Company. Be sure to try the delicious kringles. The store relocated to its new site (former Car Corral building) after plans were drawn up by the state Department of Transportation for a new turning lane from Hwy. 51 onto Hwy. J -- right over the former store! It was time to bid the old store adieu and think anew.
Think new they did with owner Tim Krolczyk excited about designing his new facilities with the customers’ desires in mind. Among the new features is a modern smokehouse, where they prepare homemade sausage and jerky. Just the makings for a picnic in the park or at the beach! Tim and his crew pride themselves on providing excellent service to their customers. They also accept the Wisconsin Quest card. They feature daily specials. Stop by for their brat fry featuring T.J.’s original brats held every Friday, from 11am to 2pm, Memorial Day through Labor Day. Remember, their car show is held in late August each year. And hunters should keep them in mind for venison processing this fall. They are open Monday-Friday 8am until 6pm and Saturdays 8am until 3pm, until Labor Day. T.J.’s is located at 8762 Hwy. 51 N near the Hwy. 51 and Cty. J intersection. If you have a special request, call them at 715-356-5258. You can also find them on Facebook.

hat separates golf courses in the Northwoods from those found elsewhere? Here, as in the metro areas, you will find the same carefully manicured greens, plush fairways, attentive staff and knowledgeable pros, along with clubhouses featuring your favorite drinks and food and full-service pro shops when it’s time for a new club.
But how about a pair of majestic eagles flying overhead or the wandering white-tailed buck to test your concentration! The incredible fresh air that is sifted by the towering red and white pine trees. The lack of urban noise and stress. The short wait to get onto the course. Affordable rates and reasonable meal prices. We have those all in abundance in the Northwoods.
Now’s the time to reserve a tee time with your golfing buddies and hit the course! Men’s, women’s, senior and couples leagues are available. Edgewater Country Club has been a golf course since the 1930’s. At that time it was called Maple Birch. Maple Birch had been family owned for almost 60 years until it changed hands for 8 ½ years during which time it became Edgewater Country Club. When we purchased Edgewater Country Club 15 years ago, even though it would be a different family we wanted to continue that comfortable feeling with our three sons. Golfers lured to the Northwoods have a choice of any number of golf courses, both 9 and 18 holes, so while you may have a favorite one or two, there are plenty of other nearby courses to test your game. Paddle the Red Cedar River for solitude, fishing
(place your event for $10) July 04-06 - Chetek - Liberty Festival July 12-13 - Cameron - Heritage Days - 10am to 5pm. Pioneer Village Museum. Demonstrations, crafters, butter making, working blacksmith shop, special music. Come see and learn about mountain men life in early 1800s; hawk throw, archery and rifle range shooting, pie baking, fire starting, candy cannon, bead work.
Paddlers can craft a pleasant trip down the Red Cedar River in Barron County, choosing the amount of time they want to spend on the water by the number of river landings available to them. All the water is suitable for beginners, although there is a small set of rapids in the far north. At Mikana on Red Cedar Lake, the waters of the Red Cedar River begin their southerly journey, passing through Rice Lake, Cameron and Sand Creek, eventually passing Menomonie before joining the Chippewa River near Dunnville. For much of your trip, you will have the river to yourself except for wildlife. Three tributaries in the county flow into the Red Cedar: the Brill River, in the north; the Yellow River, near the midpoint and the Chetek River, in the south. A few creeks also flow into the Red Cedar. The river flow ranges from slow to medium intensity. It takes about four and one-half hours to float and paddle from the Red Cedar Lake dam to the Rice Lake dam, for instance. The river flows into Rice Lake and exits about midway down the lake. Parking, grills and picnic tables can be found at some of the landings.
Fishing is said to be good to excellent in many stretches of the river, including for panfish, trout, walleye, bass, northern pike and muskies. Fishing below the dams may reward anglers but wooden debris in the dam below the Red Cedar Lake may claim a few bait. Years ago we paddled the Yellow to the Red Cedar. Some very large smallmouths were brought to the canoe and released. We easily ducked under the one set of wire fencing across the Yellow that we encountered. Eagles, osprey, blue heron, waterfowl, deer, bear, turkeys, raccoon, muskrat and grouse all can be spotted, especially by quiet paddlers. Shop for fishing and camping supplies at Rice Lake, Cameron or Chetek. Barron is another option if floating the Yellow River tributary. Visit co.barron.wi.us and follow the links to the Red Cedar River page for a river access map and descriptions of the various river sections.
Wild Rivers State Trail is one of the longer ATV routes in state RICE LAKE – ATVers traveling the 104-mile long Wild Rivers State Trail (WRST) are following a route laid out by early railroad companies dating back to the 1880s. Many of the smaller communities they will encounter along this abandoned “Soo Line” railroad grade bed exist due to the development of the early railway line.
The area surrounding the WRST is rich in natural resources and wildlife habitat. Designated as a multi-use, four-season trail, the WRST skirts many lakes and crosses numerous rivers and streams, including the Namakagon River, a federally designated river near Trego and part of the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway. The trail at the southern terminus begins within the City of Rice Lake. Points of access are located in Rice Lake and at the junction of the WRST and the Tuscobia State Trail just north of the city. En route north, ATVers will pass through the communities of Haugen, Spooner, Trego, Minong, Gordon and Solon Springs before the trail ends just south of the Village of Superior. There are restaurants, taverns, lodging, rest areas, restrooms and gasoline available at most of these communities. Rice Lake is a major retail center for Barron County and surrounding area. Riders are advised that they share this trail with other trail users, such as horseback riders, joggers and bird watchers. For more information, contact the Rice Lake Area Chamber of Commerce at 1-800-523-6318.

Bike Cumberland Games and fireworks
at Cumberland
(CUMBERLAND) – Bicyclists will find a mixture of favorable terrain in Barron County: long stretches of flat road that glide past thriving farms with Holsteins grazing in alfalfa fields, as well as long hills that take the rider past woodlots characterized by sugar maples and hearty oak trees and sparkling blue lakes. Villages and small cities along the way are oasis of food, refreshments and rest. Among the cities you’ll enjoy is Cumberland, the starting point of four rural bicycle routes varying in length from 12 miles to 31 miles. Known as the Island City, Cumberland is nestled in the gorgeous lake country of northwestern Wisconsin. All four bike routes will take you past lakes (there are 50 lakes within 10 miles of Cumberland).
Stop at the Cumberland Chamber of Commerce office and pick up the “Bike Cumberland” map that outlines the four routes: Beaver Dam Lake Loop, 12 miles; Sand Lake Loop, 20 miles; Vermillion-Barronett route, 30 miles; and the Staples-Loon Lakes route, 31 miles. All the routes follow well-paved roads with little traffic. The city of Cumberland has all the supplies you will need for your bicycle trip. Carry a repair kit, adequate water and food supplies, as there are long distances between communities. There are also five suggested bike routes within the city, all family friendly of short distances from 1.3 to 3.5 miles in length. Vehicle parking available at the Cumberland Tourist Park/Beach where all trips originate from. Additional parking is available at the municipal parking lot located behind the public library on Main Street.
CUMBERLAND – Friday, July 4 will be a day of celebration and fun in Cumberland, which will host games during the day and fireworks at dusk at the Cumberland Tourist Park. The Fourth of July spectacular is being sponsored by the Cumberland Good Ambitious People (GAP) organization. There will be live music, food, volleyball and horseshoe tournaments, a raffle, beer and of course the fireworks. Mark the calendar also for the 82nd annual Rutabaga Festival, Aug. 21-24 in Cumberland. For more information about both events, go to business.Cumberland-wisconsin.com.

Learn something new at Crex Meadows | By Mike Kornmann GRANTSBURG -- Crex Meadows Wildlife Area, located in beautiful Burnett County and just north of the Village of Grantsburg, is one of the premier wildlife viewing places in Wisconsin and most visitors come just for that reason! At 30,000 acres, Crex is one of the largest state-owned wildlife areas in Wisconsin. It is one of 76 sites included in the Wisconsin Wildlife Viewing Guide and is marked with special signs to lead visitors here. It is also the trailhead of the Northern Great Wisconsin Birding Trail. The extensive road system, including 22 miles of dike roads, offers excellent access and great vantage points for wildlife viewing. More than 270 species of birds plus many species of mammals, reptiles, and amphibians can be seen on the property. Be sure to bring camera and binoculars when you visit. (They also sponsor an annual amateur photo contest.) Wildlife is most abundant in the spring (April-May) and fall (Sept.-Oct.) when large numbers of migrating birds stop at Crex to feed and rest. Spring offers the largest diversity of species and fall is best for sheer abundance for wildlife. Wildlife is less visible in summer when only the summer residents remain. However, this is the time of year to observe wildlife with their young. Some of the behaviors you may see in summer include, an osprey bringing fish to its nest full of young, a family of otters frolicking in the marsh, or a young loon riding on its mother’s back.
The Crex Meadows Wildlife Education and Visitor Center is a great place to start your visit. Exhibits, videos and displays will help you learn about wildlife habitat and management activities. Trained interpreters can answer your questions and give you tips on where to see wildlife on the property. The education center also has one of the best gift shops in the region. A variety of natural resource based gifts for all ages is available. There are a number of items that make great birthday and Christmas gifts.
The Visitor Center is open 8am to 4:30pm Monday-Friday, and 10am to 4pm Saturday and Sunday through the first weekend of November. You can reach the Visitor Center by telephone: 715463-2739 or visit crexmeadows.org to see a calendar of events, things to do and other information. The Visitor Center’s address is 102 E. Crex Ave., Grantsburg, WI 54840.

Billy Bob’s Sports Bar & Grill
TOMAHAWK – The heavenly, smoky aroma of baby back ribs and chicken wafting from the large smokers tended by Bill Eastwood will have you coming back to Billy Bob’s Sports Bar & Grill time and time again for the Tomahawk restaurant’s signature “Thursday Ribs on the Deck.” When you are craving barbecue, no substitute will do. You can trust your taste buds to Bill, who has been cooking his award-winning baby back ribs for the past 40 years (7 years at Billy Bob’s). Each Thursday, during the summer, you can sit under the umbrellas on the deck, enjoy the fresh Northwoods air and listen to the music of local classical guitarist Jeff Calhoun as you chomp down on the ribs and chicken.
Bill uses his specially prepared dry rubs tailored individually for the baby back ribs and chicken, the latter seasoned with fresh herbs. Like all great barbecue chefs, the ingredients of his dry rubs are secret, but trust us on this – you’ll soon discover why barbeque lovers populate the “deck” to its capacity each Thursday afternoon.

The ribs are smoked for six hours to create the tender meat. (The chicken is smoked for 1 1/2 hours.) Hardwood maple fuels the fireboxes in the double smoker and imparts the smoky flavor to the ribs and chicken. Once done, the ribs are pulled from the smoker, transferred to a grill where Bill slathers on the barbecue sauce (did we mention this was a “secret” sauce, too?) in a final step. Smiling wait staff then serve the meals, which includes smoked baked beans, to the anxious diners. One would think the 100 racks that Bill prepares each Thursday would sustain the restaurant crowd for some time, but Bill says they sell out in less than two hours. That’s your cue you might want to get there early because they start serving the ribs and chicken starting at 5pm. You can choose from a full rack, half rack, half chicken or a combination chicken/ribs. That combo smoker, Bills notes, was created, in part, by Portable Welding & Repair in Tomahawk. Built on a trailer frame, the smoker is towed to the annual “Pig Out” competition at the Polish Palace (Sunset Haven Resort) in Phillips. He’s been fortunate, he says, to come back with a few first place trophies. Owned by Bill and Deb Eastwood, Billy Bob’s is located just north of Tomahawk: N12025 Cty. Hwy. L. Council Grounds State Park popular through the ages
MERRILL – Located just north of Merrill, the Council Grounds State Park draws more than 200,000 visitors each year. The beautiful and hard-working Wisconsin River skirts the west and south sides of the park and to the northeast is the 676-acre Alexander Flowage. To the east is the Merrill Area Recreation Complex, which includes softball diamonds, walking trail, soccer fields, etc.
The Wisconsin River gives up its fair share of walleye and northern pike to fishermen who usually can be found fishing below the Alexander Hydroelectric Dam, but other stretches of the river are favorites for families after panfish. There is a boat launch for access to Lake Alexander. Before the arrival of Europeans, Chippewa Indians gathered here to camp and hence its name. Old-growth hardwoods and pines tower over visitors in the park. White-tailed deer are present as
well as eagles and ospreys. The always-entertaining chipmunks can be found begging for handouts at the campsites. The 508-acre park offers lots of amenities, including a large campground (55 sites) with modern rest rooms, a 217-foot long swimming beach staffed with lifeguards, a bathhouse and concession stand, picnic areas, accessible fishing pier, boat landing, shelter house, nature center, several nature and hiking trails, and a physical fitness trail with 10 stations. Campsites are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Remember, firewood is not allowed if brought from further than 10 miles away. Reservations can be made online or by calling 888-947-2757. Canoes are available for rent. For more information about the state park, call 715-536-8773. Located two miles west of Merrill on Hwy. 107, turn south on Council Grounds Drive. A state vehicle park sticker is required for admittance.

Aerial Adventure Park takes fun to a whole new level
DRESSER – Hitch a ride on one of the coolest zip lines in Wisconsin or raise your self-confidence to a whole new level by conquering the aerial challenge course, both featured at Trollhaugen’s Aerial Adventure Park in Dresser.
The scenic Adventure Park includes the 112-element aerial challenge course and the guided six zip line tour. Come to zip, come to climb, or do both adventures! Plan to spend from 2-3 hours for each adventure, including gear-up and ground school. You can buy a pass for either or get a discount rate for both adventures when booked the same day. Safety is the rule here, with staff certified in gear-up and training keeping a close eye on everybody. To ensure safety, each platform and course has minimum age, weight and reach requirements. The “Smart Snap” system keeps you firmly attached to the “lifeline” at all times. The aerial challenge course has over 40 towers and over 100 platforms – image a giant, floating playground where you climb “trees,” hang from tires and swing on ropes just like when you
were a kid but in a whole lot cooler environment! There are four levels of difficulty to this adventure to accommodate nearly all ages (minimum 7 years) and abilities. Other staff leads groups through the zip line tour, which features over 3,000 feet of zip line fun. There’s a 1,000-foot dual-zip for tandem thrills with a friend. Multiple launch stations range in height from 12 feet to 60 feet. The fastest lines will whisk you along at speeds up to 35 mph. Adventure Park welcomes groups such as office workers, Scouts and athletic teams to not only have fun together, but also for team building and leadership development. Trollhaugen Aerial Adventure Park is open for walk-ins and booked groups 10am to 6pm each day Thursday through Sunday. The Adventure Park reserves Monday through Wednesday for groups that have booked in advance. For more information, including reservations, call 715-755-2955 or visit Trollhaugen. com.
Disc golf course at Balsam Lake BALAM LAKE – The Pine Park disc golf course in Balsam Lake is a great place to introduce the family to this relatively new sport that anyone in the family can have fun playing. The nine-hole course is set among mature pines and while you share the park with other users, the open spaces let you see where they are before letting the disc fly. Discgolfcenter.com gives this course, one of three in Polk County, a 2.25 rating. “(It’s a) short technical course amongst mature pines in a manicured park with some elevation and lots of obstacles,” it notes. Because of those trees, the course “stresses control and finesse over long bombs.” The course features hand-
carved signs with par, distance, map and number, along with new DGA baskets.
The website says this course “would be an excellent course for beginners.” A reader/reviewer agrees, and adds that the course “offers a wide variety of shots that will keep better players entertained as well.” Because this course can photo by Dean S Acheson be played relatively quickly, you can pack up the discs and travel the same day to Amery where Wapo Bible Camp and North Park both have disc golf courses. Rated at 2.0 and 2.17 respectively by discgolfcenter.com.

North Fork of the Flambeau ideal for experienced paddlers Experienced canoeists and kayakers looking for a good mix of challenging whitewater and wild scenery will find both on the stretch of the North Fork of the Flambeau River from the TurtleFlambeau Flowage dam to Park Falls. The 18-mile stretch can be done in about eight hours, depending on current flow and your paddling skills and stamina. Landings along the route can cut that time into more manageable stretches if you wish. An excellent guide to the river can be found online at paddleflambeau.com. Check out these stores in Phillips for paddling supplies, canoe and kayak rentals and shuttle services -- Flambeau Sports, N11151 County Road F, 715-339-2012, and The Crazy Loon, 125 N. Lake Avenue, 715-3396254. Another place for rentals is Big Bear Recreational Rentals, located on the North Fork, at W1614 County Road W, 715-332-5544. Here’s a guide for the first 18-mile trip down the North Fork as recommended by paddleflambeau.com: “Launch below the Turtle Flambeau Dam for an 18-mile voyage that immediately begins
with some excitement. The first mile of the trip is through fast rapids, leading to the very challenging, narrow and potentially dangerous Notch Rock Rapids. It is important to stay to the middle in this stretch to avoid contact with the steep rock walls. About 400 yards below Notch Rock Rapids is Island Rapids. Stay to the left of the island - the right side is quite dangerous. “After this, you will paddle through Flat Rapids, and 3 miles later pass Bear Skull Rock. For the next three miles, the river will pick up speed and you will find several rapids, including Quinn’s Rapids. The next 2 miles hold many smaller rapids that are easy to navigate. As you pass First Rapids, the river will begin to take on a slower character. This continues for the next 5 miles to the city of Park Falls. There is a portage of about 400 yards through Park Falls where the river runs through the mill’s dams. You can take out your canoe at the Agenda Landing north of Park Falls or at Hines Park and Campground on the left bank in Park Falls.”

Announcers and lumberjacks get the crowd involved in the show by encouraging them to cheer for their team.
HAYWARD -- Fred Scheer can’t help but reflect on the long history of his Lumberjack Shows in Hayward, as he prepares for the upcoming 33rd season. He and his brother Robert created the original show in 1981, incorporating events from the Lumberjack World Championships. More than a demonstration, the show features a competition between two lumberjack teams as they do 10 different events, logrolling, pole climbing and cross-cut saw among them. Cheering the teams on gets the crowd involved in the show which is a key element in family entertainment and a little down home humor keeps everyone chuckling. The original venue for the show in 1981 was Fred and son Cassidy pose after Cassidy wins a small dock on the the ESPN Outdoor Games Competition. Fred has trained numerous lumberjacks to perform shore of Lake Hayward in his show and who have gone on to win behind what was various lumberjack competitions. then called Windmill Square. There the show’s lumberjacks delighted small crowds and soon it became apparent the production needed more space. With encouragement from Tony Wise, the legendary Hayward promoter, Fred and Robert Scheer moved the show to its present location, Lumberjack Village. Fred is now the sole owner of Fred Scheer Lumberjack Shows and the Lumberjack Village. Training young athletes to be lumberjacks is still a fulfilling role for Fred. Through the years many lumberjacks have come, performed and moved on to other careers. Numerous world champion logrollers, pole climbers and boom-runners had their start as apprentices in Fred Scheer’s Lumberjack Show and the cast has always included world champion lumberjacks. A world champion log roller himself, Fred occasionally delights audiences by personally participating in a show. For all the years Scheer’s Lumberjack Shows has been in Hayward, it continues to draw crowds. One might say that a visit to northern Wisconsin isn’t complete without seeing a Scheer’s Lumberjack Show.

Shawano COUNTRY
Doc’s Classic Car & Cycle Museum is unique BONDEUL – Be careful when coming into the parking lot of Doc’s Harley-Davidson. Rev the motorcycle pipes too loud and the fainting goats are going to careen over! The Bonduel-based dealership may have you scratching your head as you survey their 58-acre facility that in addition to the cycle shop, houses roaming buffalo, alligators and crocodiles, pot-bellied pig, parrot, iguanas, those fainting goats (they recover nicely after being spooked) and much more. In fact, you don’t even have to be a Harley owner or motorcycle fan to appreciate what Steve “Doc” Hopkins has created there. In addition to the critters in his zoo, there’s a classic car & cycle museum packed with cool ’60s-era muscle cars and a bunch of classic cars and motorcycles. The theme hits you as soon as you walk through the original bifold doors of a 1938 Standard gas station that has been reassemble on one entire wall of the museum. A 1925 Canadian Double gas pump model L82 once held White Rose gasoline. Original porcelain gas station signs and other memorabilia would make any “picker” drool with envy.

And, we haven’t even gotten to the cars yet! A 500 horsepower Hemi-powered ’70 Cuda convertible, ’64 Pontiac Bonneville 2+2 convertible, ’69 GTO Judge will likely make you faint yourself in appreciation as you view these much desired classics. Of course, you won’t be disappointed by the Harleys displayed here, including a fully restored 1947 FL Knucklehead. Somehow a woolly mammoth strolled through the grounds earlier and left an 88-pound tusk estimated to be at least 100,00 years old. Try explaining that to the kids! Actually, Doc bought the tusk at a gift shop in Alaska. The museum is open seven days a week, and there is no admission charge to the museum.

PULASKI

It’s all about the music at Pulaski Polka Days PULASKI – You can dance up a polka storm (careful, they don’t want rain), design a polka T-shirt, shop for arts and crafts, watch the polka parade, let the kids go wild on the toys, and take a chance on a cash raffle – all at the 36th annual Pulaski Polka Days, Thursday through Sunday, July 17-20. Of course, this festival is all about the music. Pulaski Polka Days delivers with more than 20 top polka bands playing continuous music in two tents at the Polka Days grounds and at Zielinski’s Ballroom. For the schedule of this year’s bands, visit pulaskipolkadays.com. All in all, it’s an amazing four days of music and fun, with even more events than noted above. Bring a lawn chair if desired for the music and fireworks show. On Thursday, enjoy Polish food and shop for souvenirs and be “wowed” by the fireworks at dusk. The juried arts and crafts fair on Saturday and Sunday runs 9am to 3pm both days. Saturday’s Polka Trot at the middle school starts with the 5K run/walk at 8:30am and the quarter-mile Kids Run at 9am. Call Heather at 920-829-8832 to register in advance for the run/walk. The firefighters’ waterfights on Saturday will put neighboring departments on notice to see who has the best aim and maneuvers, and we’re not talking about polka steps here! Be sure to return Sunday for the delicious pancake & porkie breakfast from 8-11am and the Polka Days parade starting at 11am. The parade features bands, floats and other entries. From the Community Middle School, the parade travels down St. Augustine Street and Pulaski Street to the polka grounds.

Conover’s a sure bet for good fishing CONOVER – With a name synonymous with unspoiled nature, Conover offers anglers a “lucky 7” choice of seven major lakes for a side bet to land a trophy fish. It then throws in the Wisconsin River along with numerous smaller lakes and streams to even the odds for enough daily catch for a fish fry. Year-round, the lakes offer excellent catch opportunities for the serious as well as the beginning angler. Whether you are after a trophy musky, looking to catch a mess of panfish with the kids or come winter watching tip-ups on the frozen water, your success will be exceeded only by your enjoyment, says the local Chamber of Commerce. In the immediate area of Conover are those seven lakes and their surface acreage: Lower Buckatabon, 353; Upper Buckatabon, 494; Hunter, 184; Pioneer, 427; Stormy, 522; North Twin, 2,788; and South Twin, 642. Don’t leave your fly rod home as trout can be found in Stormy as well as in 1,100 miles of trout streams in the general area. Hundreds of more lakes to explore can be found in Vilas County and the surrounding counties as time permits. Stop in a bait and tackle store for bait, supplies, maps, tackle and the latest scoop on what’s biting and on what baits.

‘Pig in the Pines’ Rib Fest
ST. GERMAIN – The pros cook them and the amateurs (that’s us!) eat them up. We can only be talking about the award-winning ribs at the Pig in the Pines Rib Fest, July 31 to Aug. 2 – in St. Germain. In addition to those tasty ribs, there will be live music each day, attractions and lots of fun for families at this hugely popular festival held at the St. Germain Park. The event goes on rain or shine from 11:30am to 9:30pm each day. Admission is free until 1:30pm, then it’s $5 per person with children 10 and under admitted free. Speaking of the younger set, there are free kids rides at Tims Toyz all day and evening. Of course, the marquee attractions are the pro rib vendors. Newcomer Smokin’ Joes BBQ joins familiar names this year, including Pigtails BBQ Company and Texas Outlaws BBQ. Indulge your taste buds and leave your calorie counter at home because there’s more! Bite into the world’s best tasting hot waffle and ice cream sandwich; munch on funnel cakes, kettle corn and deep-fried cheese curds and slurp down homemade ice cream. The line-up of entertainment won’t disappoint. The talented Glen Gerard will show off his skills as magician, comedian and allaround entertainer. His afternoon shows take place all three days. On stage Thursday afternoon is Mark Wayne, steel guitarist; Friday afternoon, Mama’s Little Hippies, classic to folk rock; and Saturday afternoon, Mama’s Little Hippies return.Thursday – Tony Rocker, an award-winning Elvis tribute artist; Friday – Chasin’ Mason, rooted in country and laced with rock ‘n roll; Saturday – 76 Juliet, playing a wide range of music, from pop to metal from country to rock.

The Potter’s Shed has adoring fans galore SHELL LAKE – “Like nowhere else” is the only real way to describe The Potter’s Shed, conveniently located off Hwy. 63 in Shell Lake. This place of wonder, creativity and fun is true family destination that offers shopping, food and drinks, live music, hands-on art and much more. Choose a piece of bisque pottery, decorate it with a personal flair – the staff is attentive and patient as they assist children whenever needed – and turn it over them to bake. An hour later, watch your work or your child’s creation get pulled red hot from the RAKU kiln and catch on fire. Children especially love this make/bake/ take pottery experience! You can also make your own mosaic. By the way, this is a great activity idea for when it’s your turn to host birthday parties, Scout groups or a ladies getaway. More than 300 artists from across the U.S. and Canada have works of art and fine crafts, including garden art, on display in the Art Gallery and in the garden. Spectacular art may be found for hundreds of dollars, but also wonderful creations for under $20. Stop in the Pottery Outlet and pick up great deals on overstocked, discontinued or slight seconds. Look in on the working pottery studio and chat with the potters.
Indulge yourself with ice cream, healthy wraps, deli sandwiches and salads, fancy desserts and hot or cold gourmet coffee drinks in the beautifully decorated Café/Coffee Shop. Or settle back with your selections and enjoy the 5,000-square-foot old world garden and ponds The Potter’s Shed stocked with colorful Koi. 260 Industrial Blvd.
