From Your Hosts Welcome to Industry Connect – Canada’s Virtual Oil & Gas Expo brought to you by 5 Star Media Group and Shell
We’re so pleased to welcome you all to the SOLD-OUT Industry Connect! We have a full two days planned for you, and the best part is you can experience everything on your own schedule, completely from your computer, laptop, or phone!
WHO’S HERE? Industry Connect is pleased to welcome 100 exhibiting companies, dozens of webinar hosts, and more than 2,000 pre-registered attendees representing the Oil & Gas Industry. You’re likely here because you’re a member of the Oil & Gas industry who is ready to experience newer, more efficient ways of doing business, and network with your fellow industry members while learning about the latest services, tools, and technologies on offer. With so much of the Canadian population divided over the Oil & Gas industry right now, never before have Oil & Gas companies in Canada and the United States been required to band together. This is where trade shows provide a ton of value. However, the traditional trade show model is antiquated and no longer working. Traditional trade shows take up a lot of time, travel, money, and manpower. We believe those resources
are all better spent in the field and on developing new products, streamlining processes, lobbying governments, and communicating with the public about the necessity of what we do – for both our local economies, and the world economy. Industry Connect was established to address the shortfalls of traditional trade shows. The Oil & Gas Industry Connect is completely virtual, allowing attendees to effortlessly attend this show without ANY inconvenience to their professional schedule or COSTS! This event offers the industry better accessibility and affordability and unites the industry at a time when a united front is crucial. The Industry Connect platform allows the Canadian Oil & Gas industry to unite regionally and nationally while attracting foreign markets. Our innovative trade show platform offers all the same business development opportunities as traditional trade shows, but on a modern, digital networking platform that is available 24/7. All trade show activity is done 100% online using your desktop or mobile device. Through Industry Connect, you can connect with exhibitors in real-time, view and download their key documents, and stream webinars that showcase costsaving solutions to common industry problems. We are so excited to present this concept and know you will benefit from exploring new companies all in one place, on your own time. LUBRICATION MANAGEMENT
22
LUBRICATION MANAGEMENT For Well Services Equipment Even the best lubricants cannot perform effectively if not applied and managed correctly. Effective lubrication management helps deliver value from improved productivity and reductions in lubricant consumption, maintenance and operating costs.
LUBRICATION MANAGEMENT
23
One common issue we come across when visiting customer sites is contamination of the lubricant as a result of the way it is stored, handled, and applied. If the lubricant is contaminated before it even enters the equipment, its performance can be severely impacted. We have seen customers who make seemingly small improvements in lubricant storage and handling realise savings of thousands of dollars from reduced equipment downtime.
28%
Only of companies have all the recommended procedures in place to manage lubricants effectively*
67%
admit they don’t and conduct staff training on lubricants as regularly as they should. *Procedures included: Delivery and storage of lubricants, Oil change procedures, Oil dispensing systems, Efficiency of grease lubrication systems, Oil analysis, Training employees in lubricant selection and/or management
Regular oil analysis is also a crucial part of lubrication management as it helps identify early indications of equipment wear or impending failure. The program should be designed with specific procedures, targets, and a program focal with oil analysis results being reviewed when received with any actions being taken in a timely matter. Above all else, industry knowledge and expertise underpin good lubrication management. External support can therefore play a valuable role in educating staff and optimizing lubrication. Shell has one of the world’s largest teams of lubricants experts, supported by distributor partners. This network of distributors work with customers to help coach their staff in effective lubrication management techniques and conduct site surveys to help identify areas for improvement in lubrication. In doing so, these technical experts can help companies achieve millions of dollars in savings.
SHELL LUBRICANTS’ SIX STEPS TO GOOD LUBRICATION MANAGEMENT 1. RIGHT STORAGE & HANDLING – the lubricant must be stored in the right conditions and handled correctly to avoid contamination and preserve its key characteristics 2. R IGHT PLACE – for the oil or grease to reach the right surface it must be properly applied to the equipment 3. RIGHT TIME – the correct frequency of oil change or regreasing ensures the lubricant reaches the surface at the right time. Delays can result in accelerated wear 4. RIGHT AMOUNT – the correct volume of lubricant or grease applied and topped up to protect moving parts effectively 5. R IGHT MONITORING – regular sampling and analysis to ensure the lubricant remains fit for purpose and check for early indications of equipment wear. Inspections also ensure the consistent application of the first four steps 6. RIGHT PEOPLE – the competence of those who lubricate equipment can greatly affect its positive impact, particularly when it comes to ensuring all of the above happens
LUBRICATION MANAGEMENT
24 CHALLENGES AND SOLUTIONS The following examples detail some of the key lubrication management challenges that Well Services companies commonly face, the importance of taking action to address these, as well as the available Shell Lubricants Technical services to support.
The Challenge: Right storage and handling Contamination control is critical to reducing component wear and maximising overall equipment performance. How the oil or grease is stored, handled and transported through the production site greatly impacts the likelihood of contamination. Storing drums in a sheltered place and wiping the top clean before it is opened will help limit the risk of contamination by water and particles. Applying filtration can also help maintain and enhance product cleanliness before oil enters equipment.
The Solution: Expert advice and staff training Underpinning good lubrication management practices is industry knowledge and expertise. One of the core lubrication management services offered by Shell Lubricants is building technical competency across a customer’s organisation. This is delivered through Lubricant Technical Advisors, supported by a team of Global Product Application Specialists and Lubricants Services Experts. They regularly visit customers to share expertise about lubrication management.
OIL CONDITION MONITORING SERVICES, SUCH AS SHELL LUBEANALYST, CAN PROVIDE EARLY WARNING OF EQUIPMENT WEAR OR LUBRICANT DEGRADATION, ENABLING THE LUBRICANT TO BE CHANGED BEFORE ISSUES ESCALATE. The Challenge: Right Monitoring Regular monitoring and analysis helps ensure the lubricant or grease is functioning well and remains fit for purpose. Lubricant analysis is vital to business continuity. Owners and operators of mission-critical assets need advance warning of mechanical problems that are likely to damage equipment, reduce productivity and increase maintenance costs.
The Solution: Oil Condition Monitoring Services Oil condition monitoring services, such as Shell LubeAnalyst, can provide early warning of equipment wear or lubricant degradation, enabling the lubricant to be changed before issues escalate and thereby helping reduce the frequency, time and cost of maintenance. This also helps improve productivity due to greater equipment availability.

PIPELINE DECOMMISSIONING AND ABANDONMENT With so much already on offer, Allnorth is beefing up their service offering even more by tackling what they call the Next Big Thing, which is pipeline decommissioning. After a pipeline has reached the end of its useful life, the next phase of the pipeline life cycle begins. Pipeline owners cannot simply walk away from a pipeline. Pipelines need to be taken out of service safely and permanently, minimizing effects on communities and the environment. Taken out of service means that the pipeline is either left in place or removed. Owners are forever responsible for a decommissioned pipeline and are required to monitor a decommissioned line just as they would an active line. Various bodies regulate gathering, transmission, and distribution of pipelines and those that apply will depend on the pipeline being international, inter-provincial or intra-provincial. In addition to federal and provincial regulatory bodies, there may be other governmental agencies within each respective jurisdiction that may have an interest in the decommissioning of a pipeline. Pipeline owners must
seek and receive approval from these various organizations and be compliant with all government legislation to decommission a pipeline. Allnorth is at the forefront of this process, ready to assist pipeline owners with the daunting task. At Allnorth, there is an assembled team of industry leaders and subject matter experts that have developed many of the current decommissioning standards and have been actively engaged in the regulatory process. They have been relied upon as a strategic advisor to many clients across North America. Through their integrated project management approach, all crew members work to ensure that the pipeline owner’s needs are meet while minimizing risk to all stakeholders and the environment. Visit pipelinedecommissioning.com for more information.
STAYING ON TIME & ON BUDGET Allnorth realizes that success depends on more than just hands-on skills. As such, they have sophisticated, exceptionally organized construction and project management teams in place to ensure a smooth project from the very start. At the end of the day, Allnorth’s goal is to complete the project safely within the established budget and schedule, for the defined scope and standards of quality, and to the satisfaction of the client. TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR COMPANY. WHAT IS OIL COMMAND BEST KNOWN FOR? Oil Command is best known for providing the Oil and Gas industry with versatile “no-training-required” mobile apps and powerful cloud-based work order management. These tools can be accessed on Android and iOS smartphones, tablets, iPads or desktop web applications via Firefox and Chrome. Oil Command is customized to use all of your company’s terminology, making the phone app and web application extremely easy to use.
TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF. WHAT IS YOUR BACKGROUND? I was raised in Farmington, NM and grew up in a community heavily intertwined with the Oil and Gas industry. I completed my formal education with a BS in Physics at ENMU and Doctorial Studies at the University of Utah’s Chemistry Department in 2007. Since then, I have been working in the private sector as a technologist for a number of start-ups and established businesses in a wide range of industries. I have been focusing on software in Oil and Gas since 2013. For fun, I enjoy backpacking, snowboarding, and traveling with my wife and friends.
WHAT WERE YOU AND YOUR BUSINESS PARTNERS UP TO BEFORE ESTABLISHING YOUR COMPANY? We are relatively new to Oil and Gas. Starting in 2011, my co-founders were in the tubing inspection business up in North Dakota. That is where we got the idea for Oil Command. Since then, that company was sold, and Oil Command was created.
WHAT STRUGGLES DID YOU EXPERIENCE IN THE EARLY YEARS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM? In the beginning, everyone wanted a lot of features that seemed to be useful for just their business. We had to tell a lot of people no in order to preserve a really simple application. On the flip side, we said “Yes” to a lot of customer features that really make the platform more powerful and easy to use.
HOW DID YOU GAIN MARKET SHARE IN THE OIL & GAS INDUSTRY? For most verticals in Oil and Gas, work order management and ticketing is largely paper-based, so we developed Oil Command to fill this void, and the software spoke for itself. We recognized that our competitors have really had a set way of doing things that don’t always address the full range of needs and types of tickets that our customers need.
TELL US ABOUT THE MOST COMPELLING FEATURES OF OIL COMMAND. The most popular feature we have just released is called a summary ticket. This feature lets you take two or more tickets and combine them to form a single work order. You can have all the line items individually listed or a single line item summary for each ticket. You then get a link to a zip file that contains each individual ticket. This is a really great feature that seamlessly allows you to create a clear, concise ticket for your customer to sign and bill with. The E&P companies like the simplicity of having all the individual tickets in one place and a simple summary to approve.
YOU TELL US
37
WHAT OTHER FEATURES OF OIL COMMAND ARE USERS ENJOYING? We wanted to develop something that was easy to use to minimize the amount of training it would take to convert teams to the digital platform. Our EasyTo-Use Field Application and Work Documentation & Billing creates simple, easy-to-read, accurate, and detailed daily reports straight from the mobile application. The software also provides highly configurable billing features, GPS location stamps, and time tracking, letting you know that field workers are where they say they are. Also, the mobile app can run without internet connection and push information when connectivity is available.
IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR COMPANY DEMONSTRATE ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP? E-ticketing! We save a small forest every week. However, the application still allows printing to a thermal printer for situations that require a receipt to be left at a location. Users can also opt to print full pages from the web application. We also help companies significantly reduce their carbon footprint through creating trust and accuracy through the digital solutions. Prior to using Oil Command, sales reps were being required to make special trips simply to get paper tickets signed. Now sales reps can schedule those visits when its right for them and when it is best for keeping the relationship on solid ground, rather than just when they need to get something signed.
WHAT IS ONE THING OIL & GAS INDUSTRY MEMBERS MUST ALWAYS BE CONSCIENTIOUS OF? Change is inevitable and the employees and businesses that embrace that fact are better positioned to win than those who kick against the current.
WHAT ARE THE FUTURE GOALS FOR OIL COMMAND? We have a lot of really cool products lined up to help oil field service companies keep their employees accountable and demonstrate trustworthiness and quality services to their customers.
WHAT CAN TRADE SHOW ATTENDEES EXPECT WHEN THEY CHECK YOU OUT DURING THE OIL & GAS iCON EVENT? We always start our presentations building the business case for any type of technology solution. We don’t do tech because it’s cool, we do it to put more money in your pocket. Also, anyone who mentions this article using the code 5 Star Service will get a bonus 10 hours of account customization, consulting, and support on their Oil Command Account for free. LEADERS IN WATER MANAGEMENT
Since 2013, the Blueline Energy Group has been providing the Oil and Gas industry with Frac Water Management and Hydrostatic Testing services throughout Western Canada, specifically in the Fort St. John, Grand Prairie, Edson, and Drayton Valley regions. Employing nearly 100 people, company president Jay Gyug shares what obstacles the company had to overcome to make it to where they are today.
COMPANY SPOTLIGHT
39
IN JUST FIVE SHORT YEARS, THE COMPANY INTRODUCED TO THE CANADIAN MARKET LARGER DIAMETER PUMPING SURFACE LINES AND DESIGNS. Established five years ago in Grand Prairie, Alberta, Blueline Energy Group falls under the specialty Oil and Gas company category, specializing in the on-demand heating and proprietary movement of high volume water transfer through 10-inch lay-flat hose during the fracing process. For this and many other reasons, Blueline is considered the Leader in Water Management Throughout Western Canada. “Our policy is to develop and maintain a Quality Service Program by providing our customers with unparalleled customer service, complete turn-key services, and our unique equipment that has the least impact on our environmental footprint,” says company president Jay Gyug. Blueline’s most recent project involved pumping high volumes of water with inline heat on-demand this past winter through the extreme, relentless arctic fronts. This involved surface line pumping of projects from three to 45 kilometres in distance, and overcoming massive elevation changes, pulling from multiple sources and delivering on their client’s high expectations.
“We are committed to developing strategic collaborative relationships with our customers. From the beginning to the end of every project, you can rely on and trust Blueline to provide you with unrivaled integral support,” says Jay. Before establishing the Blueline Energy Group in 2013, the founders of the company were all involved in various aspects of the completion and construction sides of the Oil and Gas industry, from the producer side as well as the service company side. In just five short years, the company introduced to the Canadian market larger diameter pumping surface lines and designs to match the growing needs of the Producers Completion programs, thus delivering cost savings

WE ARE FOCUSED ON LONG-TERM RELATIONSHIPS RATHER THAN THE ONE-AND-DONE MINDSET FOUND IN MANY SERVICE COMPANIES. and efficiencies from what the industry was used to. But in those early days, there were major hurdles that challenged Blueline, which included overcoming accounting, geographic, and personnel challenges. “Overcoming the service industry’s norm of ad hoc billing after the fact was a major hurdle,” recalls Jay. “When we rolled out as a service company, we wanted to be known for committing to and honouring quoted prices. When a bid on a project was unsuccessful, we would request and engage with the client to take the time to do a post-job analysis on the project. We would discuss what their actual spend was versus what the awarded company bid, and then provide a mirror comparison against Blueline’s cost proposal. We have no hidden agendas, so sometimes our bids optically look high, but it is an all-in quote, whereas the industry is notorious for bidding low and adding on multiple charges after the contract is awarded.” Geographic coverage was another challenge Blueline faced. “Out of the gate, we set up shop in Grand Prairie with an office staff in Calgary. We were bidding on work all over Alberta and Northeastern British Columbia and found it extremely difficult to logistically make ends
meet,” admits Jay, adding that, in addition, Blueline’s FOB pricing wasn’t competitive enough. “Initially we took the hit and matched the competition on FOB pricing out of the closest city center in proximity to the work sites. This enabled us enough time to establish additional locations to allocate existing assets as well as purchase additional assets and obtain more strategic facilities and staff to effectively run operations out of Fort St. John, Grand Prairie, Edson, and Drayton Valley,” explains Jay. Drugs and alcohol in the workplace was another significant issue Blueline wanted to address early on. “We have been around and seen the issues of alcohol and drugs in the Oil Patch. The partners have, and always will be unified on the implementation and diligence on maintaining a strict D&A policy that will not compromise the well-being and safety of our employees, customers, fellow coworkers, or stakeholders of our companies,” says Jay. As they were overcoming these early obstacles, Blueline Energy Group worked to gain market share in the Oil and Gas industry brick by brick, meeting by meeting, and bid by bid. “Communication and transparency opened doors. Once the doors were open, we got the opportunities to really show the customers the culture, integrity, and expertise we bring to the table,” explains Jay. “Typically, once a producer utilizes our services, they find we are a high-functioning group that looks to maintain the reputation of industry leaders.”

A key element of the company is how they demonstrate environmental stewardship. “Blueline understands there are limits to the amount of available water supply, especially with the growing volumes the Oil and Gas industry is needing world-wide as Completion techniques continue to advance,” says Jay. “Water resources must be managed within the capacity of individual watersheds, regional parameters, and historical data. All available sources of information should be used to make educated decisions when building their water programs,” he adds. “Producers need to look at all viable options cohesively when it comes to recycling and reuse to help ease this growing strain on the industry.”

42 With an extensive list of strengths going for them, including their expertise, experience, communication, and transparency, there is a short list of qualities Jay would like prospective clients to hone in on: “Quite simply, you get what you pay for. Make sure you see the full picture when making that final decision,” he says. “Companies should make their project hiring decisions based on a company’s historically proven success, their design consultation, their equipment condition, and whether they own their equipment. Producers should look at a company’s health and safety environment, too, as well as the satisfaction and retention rate of their employees.”
FUTURE PLANS To continue with their consistent rate of success, the Blueline Partners are constantly looking at the best ways to remain an industry leader, whether that is expanding their geographic coverage, offering up more complementary services, or expanding into other lines of business. “What one can be certain of is that we will not make a move for the wrong reasons,” says Jay. “We will not compromise our existing reputation and service offerings in an
effort to chase the mighty dollar. We are proud of what we have built, and our future must be developed strategically and inline with our corporate vision.” As part of their goal of expanding their reach in the industry, Blueline Energy Group will be showcasing their products and services during the Industry Connect Oil & Gas Virtual Trade Show on May 8-9, 2018. Attendees during the show can expect open dialogue and transparency when stopping by to learn more about the Blueline Energy Group. “We don’t sell, we consult. We do not fabricate or embellish any aspect of our operations to build a false impression of the Blueline Energy Group. Our priorities are ethics, reputations, morals, accountability and transparency,” explains Jay. “We provide options and suggestions to the client even when it is not in the best interest of Blueline, but it is in the best interests of the client. We are focused on long-term relationships rather than the one-and-done mindset found in many service companies.” To learn more about the Blueline Energy Group, visit bluelineenergygroup.com

Taking Your Business
TO NEW HEIGHTS 5 STAR MEDIA GROUP, based in Calgary, Alberta, is the leading visual media marketing firm for the Oil and Gas Industry throughout Western Canada. CEO and co-founder Kelsey Hepples shares how the company has become a burgeoning business serving the needs of the Oil and Gas industry.
COMPANY SPOTLIGHT
45 It’s been five busy years in business for the 5 Star Media Group. In addition to developing and hosting Industry Connect – Canada’s first Virtual Oil & Gas Expo – the company offers a vast array of valuable services to take care of all your marketing needs. Their team does it all, from virtual trade shows, video production, professional photography, website development, Google ad word campaigns, graphic design, and social media marketing. Their full-service offerings provide a complete, streamlined approach to promoting your business from start to finish. “Our strength is branding and marketing your business to make it stand out in this highly competitive market,” says CEO and co-founder Kelsey Hepples.
HOW IT ALL STARTED Before helping establish 5 Star Media Group, Kelsey worked for one of the largest gardening magazines and gardening trade show hosts in the world as a Senior Sales Executive. “It was during that time that I learned what was needed to effectively market a company’s business,” she recalls. “We also hosted enormous trade shows that would unite gardening distributors, wholesalers, and retailers. These shows were highly attended and wildly successful in their heyday. However, things changed, and it suddenly wasn’t economical for the industry to travel to the numerous shows to conduct business. And over time the attendance dropped. That was when I learned about virtual trade shows.”
IN ADDITION TO THE VIRTUAL TRADE SHOW, 5 STAR MEDIA GROUP IS BEST KNOWN FOR THEIR INDUSTRY VIDEOS THAT PROMOTE BUSINESSES. After Kelsey left the gardening industry, she partnered up with Wade Pringle, who had been working in Fort McMurray for more than 15 years at Syncrude and left to pursue his passions in visual media and marketing in Oil and Gas. Together, the pair took their idea for Industry Connect and ran with it, turning it into Canada’s first virtual trade show for the industry. “I saw there was some very distinct parallels between the industry oil and gas trade shows with the lack of attendance,” Kelsey explains. “After approaching our Canadian media partners BOE Report, Riggertalk, and Camtrader, and presenting this concept of a virtu-

IN ADDITION TO THE VIRTUAL TRADE SHOW, 5 STAR MEDIA GROUP IS BEST KNOWN FOR THEIR INDUSTRY VIDEOS THAT PROMOTE BUSINESSES. al trade show to them, we decided it was time we brought this innovative, effective, modern platform to our industry.” In addition to the virtual trade show, 5 Star Media group is best known for their industry videos that promote businesses. Their production partners all have oil and gas backgrounds and have all their safety tickets and training, which allow them to travel virtually anywhere in the industry and film hard to reach areas. “Our team is extremely talented,” Kelsey boasts. “From making this magazine from the ground up, selling out a virtual trade show, and producing dozens of compelling videos – we do it all so well. The best part is that although we look extremely high end, we are extremely affordable. You don’t have to break the bank to effectively market your business.”
SEIZING THE MOMENT Along with the high-quality work they produce, another element of 5 Star’s success is seizing every moment. “We established our company at a time when the price of oil was at the lowest it had been in a long time and companies who were used to not competing for work were desperately looking for a way to market themselves and stand out,” shares co-founder Wade Pringle. “We didn’t enter at this time because we are opportunists – we entered at this time because this is our industry, and we knew we had the ability to really help some companies stand out and gain traction, and it just grew from there.” Back in their earlier days, 5 Star Media simply allowed the quality of their work to speak for itself and then began to offer additional digital marketing services where needed, such as digital marketing via Google ad word campaigns, photography, and eventually the Industry Connect virtual trade show. It’s all being delivered at a time when today’s Oil and Gas industry members are truly seeing the value in such marketing support.

“There is a saying that I love,” says Kelsey. ”‘Cutting your marketing budget to save money is like stopping your watch to save time.’ The key is not throwing your dollars in a marketing black hole,” she adds. “Today you can truly track your marketing dollars down to the penny, targeting your key demographic and knowing exactly who has clicked on what, where they are from, what industry they are from, and what services they are interested in. Technology has truly changed the game in terms of marketing and it’s such an incredible tool to use! You need to always be thinking about how your business is going to continue competing, and ask yourself, how are you going to market yourself so that your business stands out?” One such way companies are standing out is during 5 Star Media’s inaugural Industry Connect event. For the sold-out May 8-9 event, 5 Star Media is excited for exhibitors and attendees to network and see the many informative webinars and that exhibitors will be presenting. “Our exhibitors will be showcasing their many cost-saving solutions to industry wide problems,” says Wade. “In addition, attendees will be able to chat with exhibitors in real time, as well as download their informational documents all with the simple click of a button.”
LOOKING AHEAD It’s been a whirlwind for 5 Star Media these last few years, but the company is not about to slow down. There’s already a lot in the works for the growing team of 15, including more virtual trade shows. “We are excited to announce that the Industry Connect will be hosting two shows in 2019,” says Kelsey. “The response from the industry has been overwhelming and we are so excited to continue serving the industry with our virtual platform. We have also had an over-
whelming demand for a fall show in 2018. No dates have been finalized yet. However, anyone interested in booking into a fall show should let us know early, as we will be keeping our exhibitors to 100 companies.” With so many accomplishments under their belt already, 5 Star Media is truly in a league of its own when it comes to compelling, industry-specific marketing companies. “We want to have meaningful relationships with our clients and provide the best service we possibly can,” says Kelsey. “We want to help grow this amazing industry and help businesses succeed. We are so incredibly proud to be a part of Canada’s oil and gas sector and are so grateful to work with the hard-working Canadians that bring so much to the Canadian economy,” adds Wade.
VIEW THE VIDEO GALLERY Apart from developing and hosting Canada’s first virtual trade show, 5 Star Media’s videos are their top seller. What began as a construction company specializing in commercial renovations has evolved into a team that are also authorized retailers of Calhoun-brand fabric buildings. Cobra Structures covers a wide range of applications with their fabric structures, ranging from agricultural, mining, waste collection, salt and sand, oil and gas, and more. Sales Manager Frank Tino explains that Cobra Structures provides a wide range of services, from multiple buildings for long-term projects to the simple supply of one building package. “Our buildings can be used for a short-term project on a temporary work site or used for a permanent solution that will last for 25-plus years,” he explains.
“OUR BUILDINGS CAN BE USED FOR A SHORT-TERM PROJECT ON A TEMPORARY WORK SITE OR USED FOR A PERMANENT SOLUTION THAT WILL LAST FOR 25-PLUS YEARS.” Cobra Structures is a relatively new company, with roots in the construction industry that have provided invaluable. Before establishing Cobra Structures, founders Shane and Tyler Prevost were already running a highly successful construction company called Cobra Construction, which specialized in commercial renovations. This experience and background allowed Cobra Structures to truly hit the ground running with their new service offering and gave them the capacity to offer turn-key projects using staff and sub-contracts for both companies. Despite this successful business model, the company admits there were some challenges during their start-up years. “Competing against companies that have been in the marketplace for many years made starting out difficult,” admits Frank. “These companies had many relationships with clients for years before we came along, so the only way to show the capabilities of Cobra was to offer very competitive pricing and high-quality workmanship.” It didn’t take long for Cobra Structures to build a strong portfolio and make a name for themselves. To gain even more market share, eventually they learned that instead of trying to compete with everyone, it could also work to team up with as many companies as possible. “By helping them, we created more opportunities for ourselves,” explains Frank. “We now have a great name in the construction industry with many references.”

In other words, no detail of their structures has been overlooked. In addition, Cobra is also looking for as many green products as possible. “Our buildings offer a translucent fabric, eliminating the need for lighting during day light and lowering the lighting needs to 30% of a traditional steel building at night,” says Frank. STRENGTH OF THE COBRA At Cobra Structures, it’s not just the fabric buildings that are strong. The team itself offers their clients many strengths. “Our strengths are that we can take a project from start to finish with the help of both divisions of our company,” says Frank. “We simplify the sales process and construction schedule by having one point of contact for every aspect of the job, which relieves a lot of pressure and time for our clients,” he adds. “Most of our competitors can only supply a building and nothing else. Our goal is for our clients to be able to come to Cobra for a building and leave with the solutions to their needs and for the entire project.” LOOKING AHEAD Cobra Structures has many projects booked for Springtime installations, and with these projects coming down the pipe, the company also has their eyes on expansion across Canada and into the US. They also plan to strengthen relationships with global companies to be able to provide them with building solutions no matter where they are operating in the world. To help with their expansion goals, Cobra Structures is looking forward to sponsoring and exhibiting at the Industry Connect Oil & Gas Virtual Trade Show taking place May 8-9, 2018. During the event, attendees can look through slides of past projects and can check out the many different sizes and profiles of buildings available. Cobra staff will be on hand to answer any questions attendees have regarding their next project. Visit cobrastructures.ca to learn more.

FELLOW CITIZENS ON THE COASTS: 50 million petroleum barrels move safely through global marine terminals every day; CANADA IS AS CAPABLE AS ANYONE WHEN I WAS A KID, my dad came home from
his forestry job one day with an eye injury. A tree branch had attacked him and he showed us stitches on his eyeball. I was very young, but I still remember instantly feeling clammy and faint. For the rest of his life every time I looked him in the eye the scar was all I could see and I could feel myself turning pale, which, now that I think about it, may have been fairly annoying for him. For the rest of my life I’ve had random episodes of nauseousness whenever my imagination conjures up mental images of getting stabbed in the eye by various random objects. It’s not a habit I enjoy, but that doesn’t mean it goes away. Once we have a fear lodged in our heads, it is very hard to get out, and it takes on a life of its own that is outlandish in stature. In my peculiar instance, there are countless ways one can get hurt, many more gruesome
and painful than my personal little nightmare, but only this one makes me woozy because my little brain allowed fear to run rampant until it owned the place. A similar phenomenon has happened in the greater world when one thinks of pipelines and possible spills. A pipeline spill could indeed be a terrible thing, in a worst case scenario, just like getting a arrow in the eye would be (try getting to sleep with that image dancing in your head – it’s no easier now than it was at age ten, trust me). It is undeniably possible that an errant arrow of unknown origin may strike my ocular gadgets one day as I walk down the street, but as a functioning adult (my own self-appraisal, no one else’s) I have to override that speculation and consider the true likelihood of it happening on any given day. Which I’ve become pretty good at, and therefore most often leave my full-face motorcycle helmet at home on walking-only days.

I could wear it all the time if I felt the danger great enough though. And that’s the thing: we can take extra precautions against highly unlikely events if that is what’s required to make us comfortable. The solution isn’t to never go outside, it’s to deal with it in a manner that will under all realistically plausible scenarios ensure no major harm occurs. Like my eyeball, Canada’s coastline is a treasure that deserves full protection, while recognizing that absolute protection isn’t really a concept that can be called for in reality. If we decided to protect our coastlines in absolute terms, we would do many things differently. We wouldn’t have all those ships and boats and barges and freighters and tankers plying the waters of the beautiful coastline. We wouldn’t have millions of people living on its edge, fouling the water with effluent whenever it’s inconvenient or too costly to deal with it. We would declare it a reserve and keep all the grubby humans away.
ONCE WE HAVE A FEAR LODGED IN OUR HEADS, IT IS VERY HARD TO GET OUT, AND IT TAKES ON A LIFE OF ITS OWN THAT IS OUTLANDISH IN STATURE. But that’s not the world we live in. We all consume a lot of everything, and that involves a lot of transportation. Of both people and things. Seven billion people have that effect. We are also very good at handling these things. Every day, more than 50 million barrels of petroleum products make their way through marine terminals and onto ships. That number is actually far, far higher if one considers refined products, and the build/break bulk industry (where smaller ships coalesce loads to fill big ships and vice versa).

Of those 50 million barrels, how many significant incidents do you hear of? Ever? If you’re going to bring up the big three – Exxon Valdez, BP Gulf of Mexico, or Enbridge Michigan – then you must place them in context. First, they happened over a span of 30 years. Second, they involve marine transport, pipeline transport, and a production related incident – and to lump
WE ALL CONSUME A LOT OF EVERYTHING, AND THAT INVOLVES A LOT OF TRANSPORTATION. those activities under one umbrella means you are talking about 3 incidents involving the production and transportation of probably close to a trillion barrels of oil (average production/consumption of 80 million barrels per day for 30 years). Of these, the BP Gulf of Mexico spill is not even comparable, because it flowed uncontrolled for 87 days, in a subsea region that was incredibly difficult to access.
Of the other two incidents, they did happen, but they also catalyzed spectacular advances in safety, monitoring, and spill clean up/control. Thirty years ago perhaps a spill was taken lightly, now you will not find a petroleum transporter anywhere that is not absolutely terrified of being the next one. That does not mean terrified into inaction though, it means terrified into maximum self preservation. It is safe to assume that Kinder Morgan wishes to avoid a $60 billion tab like the one incurred by BP in the Gulf of Mexico. The last stick-in-the-eye boogeyman that needs discussing is the utter disinformation campaign against bitumen. In the event of a spill, it doesn’t sink, it floats. It is true that different techniques work better to recover diluted bitumen than conventional oil, but that does not make it difficult or impossible. It just means we need to do our homework and plan properly. And that final point is completely valid – that BC’s people, its government and its protesters (3 very different things) – have every right to demand world-class clean
TERRY ETAM VIA THE BOE REORT

up equipment and properly trained responders. Kinder Morgan would agree with that. But to the people of BC – do you know who wants a spill far less than you? Not only Kinder Morgan, but Enbridge, and TransCanada, and Pembina and every other pipeline company out there. A spill for one damages all, through the approvals process, the tide of public opinion, and the ability to get anything built again ever. A spill from the Trans Mountain system would be cleaned up in one-tenth the time it would take to undo the damage to the whole industry. It would be great to be less parochial in our viewpoints, though it’s a challenge because the daily observable things in our environments force us into them. But look up. The oil industry happens to be centered in Alberta, but the benefits spread across the nation. Communities across Canada have sent workers to western oilfields for several generations. It is also a fact that our ports are, obviously, on our coasts. That doesn’t mean that BC or Nova Scotia values our beautiful coastlines more than
Alberta or Manitoba. Landlocked provinces care much as anyone, we just don’t get to see them as often.
...WE, AS 7 BILLION PEOPLE, LEAVE A FOOTPRINT. VANCOUVER DOES, CALGARY DOES, TRANSPORTATION DOES, EATING ORGANIC FOOD DOES. We should do whatever we can to protect the things most valuable to us. But we, as 7 billion people, leave a footprint. Vancouver does, Calgary does, transportation does, eating organic food does. Luckily, we are very capable at safely moving the energy liquids required for all these tasks. And Canada can do it as good or better than anywhere. CANADA stepping up as a key role player in meeting the world’s need for natural gas by Glen Schmidt via the Boe Report
Canada has and should continue
to expand its role as a natural gas supplier of choice to the world. The cautionary concerns are not markets, demand, resources or economics; but signals of regulatory confusion or activist interference. The industry and public can actively engage with vocal support to halt the pattern of activist interference in Canadian resource development.
The International Energy Agency forecast shows the scale of the need. Natural gas is a key energy supply that will continue to support economic development around the world. This energy need is created as energy and economic development are tied together. To support economic development we are required to facilitate cost effective energy. The ~ 2% annual growth rate in natural gas demand is expected to grow continuously tracking economic growth each year.

In sport, each team has key roles for players, drawing upon their specific skills and capabilities, to create a stronger team. Economics describes the roles and capabilities of countries as absolute and comparative advantages in the production of goods. The collective of nations that make up our world benefits to its greatest extent when we each best fill our roles.
THE CAPP HAS IDENTIFIED CANADA AS THE FIFTH LARGEST NATURAL GAS PRODUCER IN THE WORLD WITH A 300 YEAR SUPPLY.
Canada is endowed with surplus natural gas. The CAPP has identified Canada as the fifth largest natural gas producer in the world with a 300 year supply. LNG allows Canadian natural gas to fill the world’s needs. Canada’s key comparative and absolute advantages include a large resource which is regulated to insure world class leadership in safe, socially responsible and environmentally managed development. Economically, Canada’s Montney gas formation can compete head to head in scale and economics with leading gas production world-wide. As an illustration of this competitive strength, the Montney lays claim to net backs of $18.03/BOE vs $15.03 for the US Marcellus flagship play.
As Canadians step up to fill our role effectively as part of the world energy supply team, our regulation will need to continue to be world leading. World leading does not mean “more” regulation, it means effective regulation. Public support for timely improvements, not activist interference, is needed now more than ever. Critiquing is not opposition; it is actively working together for enhancement. Recent experiences have taught us the industry and public need to speak up for their resource developments. The opponents to resources are loud and vocal.

local subset of emissions, it’s what will happen to the total world-wide emissions that counts. Fracking is a 100-year-old technology that is well studied, and with the increased scale, regulation and best practice has been updated. However, it will not be facts and objectivity that will advance LNG, it will be regular, vocal and vigorous support for resource development by the public and industry.
• “I am calling on both the government and the official opposition to join me in supporting a moratorium on horizontal fracking in British Columbia,” - Andrew Weaver, leader of the Green Party of BC
Canada has a role to fill on the world energy stage: cost effective and best in class natural gas.
• The Pembina Institute now calculates the GHG emissions from PNW LNG alone will be between 9 and 10 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent by 2030. B.C.’s total targeted limit is 13 Mt C02 by 2050, the Pembina Institute says. “It is for these reasons that the Pembina Institute recommends that the Environmental Certificate for the Project be rejected,”Matt Horne, Pembina’s B.C. director, tells the Canadian Minister of Environment & Climate Change Catherine McKenna in a letter dated September 7.
Canada has an LNG opportunity to capture, for our own economic development. Canadians working in partnership; the public, industry, communities, regulators and governments, can create value and meet needs. Utilizing responsible regulation and engagement can balance the economy and the environment.
