A Message from your Hosts
SCOTT CUTHBERT CEO and Co-Founder, Safeopedia
JAMIE YOUNG COO and Co-Founder, Safeopedia
In the beginning, the question on the table was ‘How could we make a real impact, improve the health and safety for our industry, and support safety professionals in their mission to send everyone home safe and sound at the end of each day?’ From this question, the idea for Safeopedia was born. Every day we strive to honour the hard work and sacrifices made by safety professionals, first responders, and environmental engineers. We hope to harness the collective genius of the industry and be the educational resource our industry needs us to be.

J.F. Shea Construction
Our History
J.F. Shea Construction is a family-owned business that has been operating for over a century.
J.F. Shea Construction began when our founder, John Francis Shea, started a plumbing company in Portland, Oregon in 1881. His company grew as the city did, eventually evolving to include pipelines and infrastructure projects like the Portland Seawall, sewers and tunnels. John’s son, Charlie, took over the business in the mid-1910s and led the company until his death in 1942. He took the company through some of the largest and most challenging engineering projects in the country, including the Hoover Dam, the Golden Gate Bridge and the Oakland Bay Bridge.
TIRELESS EFFORT, GOOD MANAGEMENT, AND CLOSE CONFORMITY TO A HIGH STANDARD OF ETHICS ARE KEY TO OUR SUCCESS
In 1956, we formed a Californiabased infrastructure division to work on highway, bridge and paving projects in northern California and Oregon. We acquired respected water project constructor Advanco, Inc. in 1999. This helped us expand into southern California water projects, including water treatment and delivery, wastewater, water purification

We also founded a Pennsylvania-based bridge division in 2004, allowing us to pursue bridge and transportation infrastructure replacement and restoration projects in the area. Today, J.F. J.F. Shea’s Environmental Commitment We know that the health of our waterways is important, and sewage can have a devastating impact on such sensitive environments. Our combined sewer overflow systems—

Safety Products Inc.
Safety Products Inc. (SPI) has a vast and diverse inventory of items and services in addition to decades of experience in the safety industry.
2020 has been a lot of things, but so far it has been the year of COVID-19 above all else. With this unprecedented pandemic, the entire globe is reckoning with a novel virus as well as its medical, economic, sociological and political ramifications and implications. Masks, gloves and sanitation products have been flying off of the shelves worldwide, and entire populations are subject to strict new health and safety regulations. As leaders within the safety distributor community, our company was able to source and supply alternative products and new products to fulfill the new supply needs.
A Brief History of Our Company Our business began over half a century ago under the name Ramwil Industrial Glove Supply. Our main purpose during those early years was to provide work gloves of all styles and materials from around the world. After gradually establishing our presence as a national leader in the sale of work gloves, we began diversifying our inventory of occupational safety products into an ever-growing selection of safety gear for a wide variety of use. Over the years, our opportunities grew to an extent that we decided to rebrand from Ramwil to Safety Products Inc. in 1984.

Safemap International
Since our founding in 1994, Safemap has brought its own philosophy and approach to workplace safety in various key industries.
The company’s mandate for promoting safe business operations is based on the fundamental idea that to really improve safety and security, you have to go beyond the rote process of informing individual employees of their safety responsibilities and best practices, and into the culture of the business itself. Delivering information to the individual is only part of the equation. To really get inside a business and build a safety culture, systemic change has to occur. That involves looking at how leadership is oriented toward a number of core problems, and how to support the risk mitigation that leads to success and safety.
17
Company Spotlight | Safemap
Safemap has developed strategies and risk mitigation plans that work on this basis, and on the broad knowledge and research assets that we have built over our years in business. This type of mentality has been instructive as Safemap builds tools like our riskDELTA process and training modules that allow companies to develop better game plans for handling risk.
Safemap: The History Throughout the 1990s, Safemap leaders were involved in developing safety and leadership effectiveness surveys, and conducting research on what makes workplace safety plans successful.
Throughout the first few years of the new millennium, we were developing database solutions into safety training projects that would eventually lead to a suite of proprietary training programs delivered to clients and stakeholders in 2005.
TO REALLY GET INSIDE A BUSINESS AND BUILD A SAFETY CULTURE, SYSTEMIC CHANGE HAS TO OCCUR.
Groundbreaking Ideas in Workplace Safety
One of Safemap’s particular strategies is to build broad sourcing for a leadership model that effectively limits incidents of Serious Injury, Fatal and Catastrophic Risks, or SIFC. Along the way, Safemap played Entities like the U.S. Bureau of a significant role in some Labor Statistics and private businesses and groups with a companies look at SIFC metrics front row seat to risk mitigation to identify risk levels and see strategies. One example is the what’s happening within a given company’s selection by the industry. Insight into SIFC helps Minerals Council of Australia to enterprise to identify where conduct a safety culture survey of risk lies, and develop strategies the Australian resources industry to decrease raw numbers of in 2000. Without this 18

kind of verification, the efficacy of safety plans can be very much left in doubt. A verification process is paramount in “proving” safety training and its role in lowering risk concretely for companies. Safemap also promotes our “WE CARE” model which shows the principles behind risk mitigation. Companies’ strategies have the objective of building a culture that allows clients to: • Win hearts and minds of people. • Eliminate boundaries and fear from the organization. • Create risk competence at all levels. • Analyse risk processes and risk culture. • (Build) Resilience in leaders and risk systems. • Evolve to ‘best-in-class.’
What does it mean to build safety training programs on solid ground? It means exploring these testing and evaluation processes and making sure that the design of instructional materials and course work is inspired by a real knowledge base. That has been a mainstay of Safemap’s core processes in looking at the acquired knowledge, deciphering what it means, and applying it back into models that drive better decision-making for end users.
SAFEMAP SEEKS TO DISTINGUISH BETWEEN LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT, WHICH ARE TWO SEPARATE DISCIPLINES THAT NEED THEIR OWN APPROACHES but consistent presence at conferences and tradeshows provided more visibility, as did awards such as the 2013 designation of Safemap’s founder as the American Society of Safety Engineers’ (ASSE) Mine Safety Professional of the Year. The recognitions were helpful, but they also reflected the work that went into building the company up internally, and the mission that inspires the firm’s work.
Best Products
Building Bridges As the company grew, expanded our knowledge base and developed our internal resources, Safemap founders were also moving to get more visibility in the field. At the beginning, the company’s success was built mainly on word-of-mouth,
One of the best parts of Safemap’s contributions to safety training is the DeepSafe leadership system—that uses the idea of “transformational leadership” to support key management skills building. In utilizing the transformational leadership paradigm, Safemap seeks to distinguish between leadership and management, which are two separate disciplines that need their own approaches. Many leaders know
19
Company Spotlight | Safemap
this intuitively, and some have heard some version of it in leadership training, but being direct with this model can clarify what leaders need to do to be entirely effective in safety work. There’s the idea, borne out by research, that many aspects of safety must be driven by a global set of constraints or prescriptive data, so that those who are lower on the totem pole, or newer to the business, internalize effective safety techniques. There’s also the e-Profile Culture Survey, which involves benchmarking cultural achievements to promote the outcomes employees train for. Using seven scales consisting of Company, Leadership, Processes, Influences, Attitudes, Rules and Task, group surveys are done onsite or over the web, and provide their own specific business intelligence results to apply to risk management culture.
Into the Future Building on the company’s past successes, Safemap leaders want to grow our client base, to help even more companies to conquer the challenges inherent in safety cultures. By developing leadership skills as well as risk competence and awareness, training companies can guide firms toward greater capability in the area of reducing risks. In tandem with good recruiting and talent management practices,
companies can chart a path toward competitive success in their fields, and work toward better proactive safety work that shields them from all sorts of liabilities and mishaps. So the inspiration—to drive better training, to build in more transparency, and to supply an agile workforce—continues.

Sqwincher
We provide your workers with professional grade hydration® specifically formulated to hydrate and replenish key electrolytes lost through dehydration and physical exertion.
In the industrial workplace, Sqwincher is recognized as the authority on hydration.
We see workers as modernday industrial athletes. They need optimal solutions to stay hydrated and focused. That’s why we have committed our efforts to offering hydration solutions that work.
Why Hydration Matters Dehydration is a year-round safety issue. It not only affects workers in high heat situations, but also those working hard in cold temperatures.
29
Company Spotlight | SQWINCHER
Throughout their shift, a worker’s fluid levels are depleted and their body consumes key electrolytes (like sodium and potassium) in order to maintain proper muscle and nerve function, regulate blood pressure, and keep acidity levels where they should be.
SPECIALLY FORMULATED TO HYDRATE AND REPLENISH KEY ELECTROLYTES LOST THROUGH DEHYDRATION AND PHYSICAL EXERTION
That’s where good hydration comes in. As these fluids and nutrients decrease, so does mental sharpness. A 3% to 4%
loss of body fluids is enough to result in a 25% to 50% decrease in performance. That’s an effect similar to alcohol impairment, and just like showing up to the job with a couple of drinks in your system, working while dehydrated can lead to an increased risk of accidents. While there’s no way to deal with alcohol impairment in the short term (other than sending the worker home to sober up for the day), there is something you can do about dehydration. Ensuring constant and easy access to fluids rich in electrolytes, along with training and education to recognize the importance of hydrating well, can ensure that all workers are functioning at their full capacity.
Our Products Sqwincher® products are formulated to deliver a balance of electrolytes your body needs with great-tasting flavors.

Finally, our liquid concentrates mix readily with water and feature a unique formulation designed to help reduce the fatigue and cramping associated with exertion and work in high heat conditions.
Adapting to Hydration Challenges COVID-19 is the defining workplace challenge of this year. Even hydration was affected, as workers and safety officials became sensitive to communal containers and dispensers. We’re proud to say that our products helped employers handle this issue. The Sqwincher® Qwik Stik® and Sqweeze® provide electrolyte solutions in individual packaging that minimizes the number of touch points involved in getting and dispensing a serving. Since social distancing became a reality, these have become bestselling products in their category. We also know that the fight against climate change is a major responsibility that affects each of us. That’s why we’ve designed our pouches and our ultra concentrate products to provide more hydration with less packaging. This dramatically reduces waste when compared to conventional hydration options like offering cases of bottled water. Our liquid concentrates and powder mixes also allow us to move more product per unit of volume, which reduces our overall carbon footprint.
We’re also aware that employees all have different health and medical needs and that our main stable of products might not be suitable for everyone. That’s why each of our product lines have at least one sugar-free option to ensure that everyone from calorie conscious consumers to those who have to limit sugar consumption for medical reasons will be able to get the electrolytes they need.
Hydration Innovation Despite the effectiveness of our products, we have never rested on our successes. We work hard to stay on the cutting edge of innovations in products, packaging, and dispensing methods.

The world is always changing. Hydration needs to keep up. That’s why we take an innovationdriven approach. We can never predict what challenges will come next, that doesn’t mean we can’t be ready to meet them.
OUR GOAL IS TO MAKE SURE THAT WE HAVE HYDRATION SOLUTIONS THAT WILL KEEP EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOUR EMPLOYEES HYDRATED AND SAFE FROM HEAT STRESS, WHILE REDUCING CONCERNS LIKE WASTE AND PORTABILITY
Let Us Get to Know You If you’re participating in Safety Connect Virtual Conference & Expo this year, get in touch with us. We want to learn more about you, your industry, and your challenges.

We use our extensive experience in virtual training units spanning from more than 50,000 workers trained to the knowledge of over 40 university consultants. Thanks to our new, immersive technology, now companies can conduct their training sessions in a modern and engaging way, in any location, at any time, and with no risks. Established in 2016, EHS VR merges the knowledge and expertise of our two founders: a skilled professional firefighter and a top-level VR specialist. Their solution allows organizations to conduct training with large groups of employees at once in a completely safe environment, and prepare them for the most complex situations

in a flexible and intuitive way. And we can bet this is going to be the new standard of how EHS/ OHS/HSE training programs are going to be conducted. As the founders clearly pointed out, VR technology can be an invaluable asset in helping to reduce the number of at-work accidents.
VR TECHNOLOGY CAN BE AN INVALUABLE ASSET IN HELPING TO REDUCE THE NUMBER OF AT-WORK ACCIDENTS
Taking the First Steps Back in 2016, VR was a new technology still in its early stages. Motion sickness, lack of precision of the interactions and a clunky usability presented significant challenges for any developer who aimed at creating an immersive but accessible experience. VR has matured a lot since then, and EHS VR is evangelizing its adoption today. From the small meetups of 7-10 HSE professionals in the early years, we have now evolved to running large seminars of up to 70 attendees who are learning how much VR is a game changer, especially as we face all the dangers of the COVID-19 pandemic.
How Does It Work? EHS VR applications are storybased experiences consisting of 360-degree video footage with real actors instead of 3D models, with gamification embedded at its core. Any number of easily transportable and autonomous headsets can be used at the same time, and more importantly, they can be used anywhere (office, construction site, etc.) with no need for any additional hardware to run them.
Thanks to the highly flexible pay-per-view model, clients can invest in View Points that allow them to decide when, where and on what applications they want to invest. Even with a minimal investment, an organization can enjoy a highly immersive platform with the additional benefit of advanced analytics that could be integrated with any already existing LSM system.
This is the most advanced form of training available: the worker will build the same muscle memory and operational awareness as in real-life training. And as a bonus, since no real-life equipment is needed, the organization’s carbon footprint is reduced as well.
The trainee is completely cut off from any external distraction while navigating the most dangerous and life-threatening situations in a controlled manner. For example, in the latest “Dealing with burns” first aid sim application for the Oculus Quest headset, the trainee can fully navigate a 360-degree virtual space with his or her hands instead of the controller. Other apps currently available include first aid (BLS + AED), fire protection, and road accident & hitting a pedestrian simulations.
With this highly scalable technology, EHS VR is at the forefront of innovation, bringing forward a groundbreaking technology to modernize established training programs. The time is ripe for a change in the way effective trainings are being delivered, and more importantly, it’s vital to keep up with the fast-paced changes that are revolutionizing the current workforce. According to the creators of EHS VR, “Companies that are in a forefront of that evolution can count on much higher engagement rate,” and

Keeping up with Modernization
there’s no need to explain how this will lead to better results in reducing at-work accidents. EHS VR has already been awarded for Innovative Training Solutions at the trade fair in Katowice. But in the long run, our training is bound to become the leader of top-quality training solutions.
Ongoing Projects and Future Plans The currently available training programs are just the tip of the iceberg, though. In the upcoming months we have already planned many new simulators and applications to cover a broad range of hypothetical situations. In fact, we plan to release four new applications that will see the light very soon:
• Forklift hazards & service • Manual transport & ergonomics • Accidents at work • Work in a confined space & at height
WE BELIEVE ACTIVITIES LIKE THAT MAKE REAL IMPACT ON IMPROVING THE AWARENESS OF THE COMMUNITY ABOUT HEALTH & SAFETY CHALLENGES AND IMPROVE PEOPLES’ LIVES But that’s not all. Being a merry bunch of technology enthusiasts who often talk about VR even after hours, the EHS VR team is

Today, youngsters are true naturals when it comes to technology, and it comes as no surprise how easily they could learn vital aspects of safety by using VR products. Honeywell
Honeywell is the name in safety and productivity solutions worldwide.
Founded back in 1906, and proudly operating today on a massive scale—workers all over the world use Honeywell safety solutions with confidence and comfort. Every single day, hundreds of millions of people work in hazardous environments, and rely on their safety equipment to get them home at night. For over a century, Honeywell has been protecting workers with head-to-toe safety offerings, rooted in our industry experience and relentless drive to innovate. Safety and health are critical in every facet of life, both on and off the worksite. Providing the right-fit protection for every job and its unique profile of hazards

takes experience and innovation. But protection isn’t the end of the story. Equipment will only work if it’s being used, so ensuring that safety solutions are comfortable and functional is paramount.
TO WORKERS IN HAZARDOUS INDUSTRIES, PPE IS PART OF THE JOB
They arrive at the site, put on their gear and start their day—all part of the procedure. However, many meet the requirement begrudgingly and might admit they’d immediately shed that equipment if they could. That’s why the focus of Honeywell products is on increasing productivity and efficiency
instead of getting in the way. Well-designed, innovative PPE is like a trusty tool or a dependable assistant—it can make your job easier, quicker, more efficient and most of all, safer! It shouldn’t be a cumbersome impediment that slows a worker down, it should be integrated into the task with a focus on function and protection, so that neither has to be compromised. Honeywell has a vast selection of product offerings for every hazard and every situation. Whether it’s ubiquitous hazards like falling objects, heights, toxic atmospheres, sparks or noise, or the unanticipated challenge of the COVID pandemic, Honeywell aims to ensure the safety of each worker, every day.

Continually improving on the tried-and-true, and meeting new challenges like COVID-19 head-on are both in the sphere of Honeywell’s operation. Unprecedented demand for medical PPE related to COVID-19 has needed a dramatic response. When safety gear needs to do its job and let the wearer do their job, leaders in the safety industry like Honeywell have critical roles to play as experts and suppliers. Resources were needed immediately to provide planning, manpower and materials to meet this driving need. Investment has been allocated by Honeywell to develop new production facilities
and expand existing ones to fulfill production needs and get them to market faster. Every effort is being made to adapt to a truly unanticipated scenario. Honeywell is working around the clock to ensure that their partners and the communities they serve are properly outfitted with the equipment they need to do their jobs safely. Medical care worker and first responder safety is crucial to hold our ground in the fight against the pandemic. As more is learned about the virus, transmission vectors, spread and protection, Honeywell is reactive with integrating new information while creating proactive initiatives to meet demand. The key mandate of this development effort is to ensure that those who need specific protective equipment the most—medical workers and first responders— have what they need to help care for others without risking themselves.
YOU’RE NOT JUST PROTECTING A WORKER —YOU’RE PROTECTING A LIFE!
More than a slogan, it is a guiding value for the organization. A core belief, which buttresses the Honeywell strategy to grow, develop and improve continually in every offering. So much time and effort are dedicated to poring over specifications, testing materials, conducting market research and developing human resources, but it all needs to stay well within sight of that single, crucial objective: Safety at work and safety at home. Building a safety culture takes work. It requires proper communications and best practices by management. The training offerings that NASP provides are built with those imperatives in mind, and with attention to realities on the ground, for example, with knowledge of how OSHA as a federal agency works practically with businesses, or how to optimize processes around international shipping, from a safety standpoint. Also, NASP puts a focus on what its founders call: “(emphasis on) andragogical (training adults) methodologies for interactive and dynamic training.” This approach is shown to yield results in terms of two main goals: One is engagement of the student. The other is knowledge retention, where proven and demonstrable results are the gold standard. Another pillar of excellent safety training is technical support. With
NASP’s multi-model operations, having adequate tech support is important. We are striving to implement the kinds of muscular support that give students and employers confidence as they learn. As we have built our user base and benchmarked our accreditations, all of this has been done according to our deep knowledge of the training industry—how federal agencies
work (and what they value), what it takes to provide verification in the public and private sectors, and how to “show your work” and demonstrate thought leadership and excellence in safety training. With a broadly diversified content base tackling all aspects of workplace safety, NASP is leveraging all of that vital groundwork and continuing to modernize our instructional components and our platform.
Data visualization, blended learning and various digital advances bring the power of cutting-edge online and virtual training to industry audiences in a way that’s powerful and effective.
