British Schools and the Black Child - By Marcus Smith
B
ringing her ‘London Schools and the Black Child initiative’ to the city of Birmingham, Diane Abbott MP and other lead community figures led the ‘new conversations’ driving through inequalities in British schools.
‘No time for bawling. We need action.’ Commendations, standing ovations and laughter were just some of the emotive approvals heard echoing through an overflowing lecture theatre in the city of Birmingham. Claps sored through the auditorium as one after another, inspirational speakers took to the stage supporting the notion that the “Time is long overdue.”
Despite the laughter and the singing, yes even singing; the importance of the message “We need action” was never lost. On thanking the National Association of Schoolmasters Union of Women Teachers (NASUWT) for sponsoring the event, Labour MP for Hackney North and Stoke Newington, Diane Abbott acknowledged the personal support she has received from them at times when some people were slightly “timid” in recognising and addressing the issues Black children faced within the education system. Setting the serious but upbeat tone for the conference she stressed it was a pivotal time in which to bring her London Schools and the Black Child (LSBC) initiative beyond the confines of the M25. “Where more an appropriate place to come than Britain’s second city Birmingham” she said at the Centre for Research in Education (CRRE). The conference ‘British Schools and the Black Child: New Conversations’ saw hundreds of parents, teachers, students and community activists pack into the University of Birmingham’s School of Education lecture theatre, with the collective goal of coming together to break the inequality many Black children are facing in a “colour blind system.” Flying in from Canada especially for the conference, Jamaicanborn Dr Avis Glaze who is a recognised international leader in education, emphasised that “Education is the ultimate tool of empowerment.” Not stopping there, a live video link direct to Jamaica was set up where onlookers heard Elaine Foster-Allen, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, stress the importance of our young people knowing their national heritage. “People, who don’t know themselves, can’t move forward.” Dr Paul Warmington, who has worked extensively on issues of race equality and who is currently Deputy Director for the Centre
for Research in Race and Education (CRRE) talked about the importance of creating new narratives in relation to race, education and social justice. “It’s now a question of creating practical strategies to move forward.” Taking to the stage again, ‘comrade’ and ‘warrior’ were just two of the words Abbot used to introduce equality and diversity associate Rosemary Campbell-Stephens. Campbell-Stephens, an international educational speaker, had the packed auditorium cheering as she took to the stage. Her ‘Jamaican flair’ didn’t go unnoticed as she opened her speech with the words “Bless, Bless Bless…No time for bawling” which definitely warmed the crowd. Though entertaining, her emphasis remained on the importance of the ‘truth’ being taught to our Black Children, “In a curriculum which reduces us to slaves.” She asked for the truth to be told so we can all move on. Other speakers on the day included, Wade Lyn Honorary Consul for Jamaica, Space Scientist and Research Fellow Maggie Aderin-Pocock and Chris Keates General Secretary for NASUWT. In addition to the conference, late morning workshops were set up whereby participants were encouraged to attend targeted lectures relating to their specific educational interests. Workshops included Exclusions, Black Girls’ Experiences of Education, Recreating the Village and Developing Young Leaders in further and higher education. A general consensus amongst attendees was that “the school system needs to look at itself ” and that ignorance along with a monoculture curriculum are partly to blame for the overrepresentation of Black children not reaching their full academic potential. However throughout the conference and workshops it was made clear that progress has been made stressing that discouragement shouldn’t be felt as Black attainment is in fact increasing. This is in response to new statistics showing that Black children are now out performing their White working class peers. If you would like more information on the ‘London Schools and the Black Child initiative’ please visit: www.blackeducation.info Or For help and support relating to your child’s education ‘The Black Families Education Support Group’ is an organisation which can help you with problems and concerns you may need help with. BREAKING THE SILENCE - A walk under the Hockley Flyover with SOWETO KINCH. By Donna Adu Can anything good come out of Handsworth? If you follow the narrative of Handsworth and the surrounding areas of the past fifty years, you could only see those areas as crime ridden, rebellious and violent places. If you happen to live there you would either be seeking to flee the terror of its’ image or you may be one of those fighting to change it. To Soweto Kinch it is a simple case of: “it is where I live and the environment that inspires me the most. It gives me a framework to express a variety of moods and social themes and to tell a unique story”. He tells that story through an impressive series of albums including the highly acclaimed - The Legend of Mike Smith, The New Emancipation, War in A Rack, B19: Tales of the Tower Block and Conversations with the Unseen “A real tour de force – a contemporary take on The Seven Deadly Sins.” John Fordham, The Guardian (about the album) “[Kinch’s album] is brought to loud and ambitious life.” The Public Reviews “Clever, engaging, witty” Reviewsgate “Racy, slick, lively and quite unlike anything I’ve ever seen before. It fanfares the new REP Studio as a Jack-in-a Box of wonders.” BBC Radio Shropshire “A spectacular piece of theatre” London Jazz News “A mind-blowing experience.” The Stage “Hilarious, but utterly impressive: Kinch has sharp wit and is very self-aware.” Redbrick These are just a few of the highly impressive accolades that he has attracted from both sides of the Atlantic but it is when he shares the story of the Hockley Flyover Show that a huge grin spreads across his face: “I’ am proud of the fact we’ve redefined peoples’ relationships to this space. It’s a neglected area. I felt that more than any other area this expressed a lot of the innate contradictions we face in the black community in Britain. I wanted to reclaim the space and reclaim the stories.”
This particular space lies underneath the Hockley Flyover. It is part of the Birmingham interchange and is a perfect representation of the brutalist late modernist architecture that was popular during the 1950’s – 70’s. By the 21st century it had become another abandoned inner city space, where nobody wants to live and where silence becomes convenient for some and very profitable for others. James Baldwin’s novel If Beale Street Could Talk immediately springs to mind. If Beale Street could talk it would tell of Injustice and despair, but it would also tell about Love and a community determined to find and explore its voice through music, dance, poetry and poetry and to tell its own story.
Soweto flips me back to Birmingham and the Hockley Flyover Show and to jazz, Hip Hop, Graffiti, Break Dance and Poetry and the day, five years ago when an entire community stepped up to the plate, found its voice and laughed. “I was certain that it could be a hub of creative activity that would bring residents of all ages together to celebrate their lives and to tell their own stories through, music, dance and poetry”. It has been laughing every year since that day, determined to demonstrate its’ capacity to love and appreciate the work of major artists such as Miss Dynamite, Maxi Priest, Goldie and even more critical to show their love and appreciation for each other. It is a creative energy that has been harnessed by Soweto for the past thirteen years through his hosting of the Live Box at the Drum Arts Centre in Aston. These are areas that were previously defined as areas of high crime and violence. The LIVE BOX the HOCKLEY FLYOVER SHOW and more recently the SIMMER DOWN FESTIVAL have been instrumental in dispelling that myth. It is a story that has resulted in an equally impressive list of highly prestigious awards including a Mercury Music Prize nomination, two UMA Awards and a MOBO for best Jazz Act in 2003 and 2007. In a recent interview- Reimagining the City, (BBC) Soweto spoke about people’s perceptions when he tells them he is from Birmingham. That is; that a person with all his achievements could not be from Birmingham. London or New York perhaps but certainly not Birmingham. He again dismisses that notion “in my block alone, there are Hip-Hop heads and another jazz musician and poets and dancers” Instead he points out the reciprocity that affords him the luxury of being the artists he wants to be. “The fact that I’ve stayed in Birmingham sets me apart from the other musicians in London - I can do everything from here. There’s a camaraderie and respect that other musicians have for each other in Birmingham.” However, he is also eager to establish that is never been a case of making enough money, moving away and then giving something back. It is more a case of staying in an area, working with others and creating the kind of community you want to live in. His creative output is not diminished in any way. His immediate plans include: A UK tour with the Legend Of Mike Smith, a tour to New York with Jonzi D, an album with Birmingham Group PEN TALK and a lot more work with Radio and TV.

Recognising the challenges faced by UK residents for too many years, the company’s services have been specifically designed to facilitate all aspects associated with, but not limited to, property sales, purchases, house-building projects, probate matters, property disputes and title applications. The company prides itself on having the knowledge, expertise and contacts to ensure that clients using its services for their property affairs in the Caribbean are able to avoid pitfalls, and more importantly, save money. Clients are further able to enjoy having the support of a company that not only saves them from incurring costly international telephone charges, but one that responds to their communications in a timely and efficient manner. The primary aim of the company is to provide its clientele with a safe and professional environment for dealing with their property affairs in the Caribbean… from the UK!
