The 605 team hears feedback often that our food reviews and features (or let's be real, the photos of food and drinks) make readers want to stop what they're doing and make a reservation immediately.

Now imagine an entire issue featuring some of the newest and latest in food and drinks in South Dakota.

It's a tough job, but someone has to do it.

Two of the highlights are from Brookings. Formerly in Huron, Yessica's Restaurant moved to the growing town and serves Italian and Mexican (someone heard my prayers).

Micro Doughnuts is also a newer addition. Don't be fooled, though. Speaking of, how many "micro doughnuts" equal a normal doughnut? Asking for a friend...

Other features include FLYT in Deadwood (a sexy new restaurant and nightclub), Good Day Cafe in Spearfish (the team's fresh food and mantra will make you want to transport yourself there pronto), and Sanaa's Gourmet (the fatayers, tho).

The 605 team began our self-guided tour of the town at the Adams Museum. Opened in 1930 by W.E. Adams in hopes of preserving the history of the Black Hills, this museum is full of exhibits that do just that.

Communications director Rose Speirs and exhibits director Darrel Nelson delved into the world of Deadwood history.

“Most exhibits include activities of one kind or another, such as a photo op in front of the tallest human ever recorded, working on a two-sided puzzle of 40 square feet on each side, or a touchscreen that guides the viewer into legal complexities of old Deadwood,” said Nelson.

involvement with the local history that contributed to modern-day Deadwood.

“We offer free admission for military families from Memorial Day to Labor Day through the Blue Star Museums program,” explained Speirs.

Aside from admission specials, the museum also offers tours to groups of 10 or more at a discounted rate, ensuring people get the most out of their visit to the past.

“Not a lot of people would expect to find national-class exhibit experiences in a small town 10 miles off the interstate, but that is exactly what we offer,” said Nelson. “Our target is the imagination of the traveling visitor.”

MEMORIAL DAY THROUGH LABOR DAY And traveling visitors we were. After learning about the other museums in the Deadwood History family, we drove the three minutes to Broken Boot Gold Mine. This seasonal attraction was opened in 1954 and offers the only underground mine tour in the northern Black Hills.

“The underground tour is 30 minutes long, about a quarter mile walk,” said manager Kerry Ruth. “It's just long enough to entertain children and inform adults.”

In addition to the tours, the mine also offers various types of gold panning, depicting the significant effect of the Black Hills Gold Rush had on a local and regional level.

“We give tours every 30 minutes, and our guides are all local high school and college students, even some teachers,” said Ruth. “The mine is truly a part of our community.”

In need of a thirst quencher, we decided to end our day at the Deadwood Social Club. Previously known as Aunt Sally’s Speakeasy, this Deadwood staple was opened in 1993 and offers "classic cocktails and elevated food."

Head chef Adam Venner explained the eatery has a vast selection of wine, martinis, and locally sourced dinner options.

“People know that we do our best to use local resources from places like Gillette (Wyo.) and Pierre,” said Venner. “We’re trying to stay in the farm-to-table movement while sticking to our steakand-potatoes roots.”

1 red onion chopped 2 tablespoons butter 4 cloves chopped garlic 6 cups fire roasted tomatoes 3 cups seafood or shellfish stock 1 bay leaf 1/4 cup chopped fresh oregano 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes French baguette: sliced thin, grilled and buttered cover in fresh oregano.

Sweat the onion and garlic in butter until onion is translucent. add fire roasted tomatoes, stock, bay leaf, salt and red pepper flakes. Bring to a boil and simmer on low for 30 minutes, finish with fresh oregano. This should yield about 2 quarts.

This is a tomato broth that we use to fold into our fishermen’s stew; we include mussels, clams, red crab, lobster claw and scallops.

SLEIGHER BEGAN WHEN... Chad McKinney and myself talked after a show by my then-Christmas project called Tiny Tim and the Crutch Kickers. Both of us loved swearing, music, and Christmas. Stupidity ensued.

SLEIGHER WAS STARTED IN...

2011 in Sioux Falls. It started in Kerry and Adrienne Roberts’ basement. With several drinks and Chad McKinney already having an idea for the band name, Sleigher was the perfect recipe for fun.

OUR MUSICAL INFLUENCES ARE... Burl Ives, Richard Cheese, Billy Idol, "Weird Al" Yankovic, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Tenacious D, and Fugazi.

OUR MOST INTERESTING PERFORMANCE WAS... on December 12, 2015. The SantaCon pub crawl was the same day. Icon Lounge was full, and it was a wonderfully messy and joyful night. It looks like this year may be similar!

CHRISTMAS IS… magic. Pure magic.

I RETURN TO SLEIGHER EACH YEAR BECAUSE... well, it’s more like every 2.6 years since we’ve only played three shows in eight years. However, Sleigher 2019 has two shows booked, and that’s a first. We love to celebrate the season and raise money for good causes!

SOME OF OUR DAY JOBS INCLUDE... teaching, music instrument repair, information technology, and a tattoo artist. You can guess who has what job.

If you’re not in the mood for food, FLYT continues the flight trend into its drink menu as well, offering a plethora of beverage options.

“Our most popular drink flight is the Bloody Mary Flyt, which includes a Absolut Cilantro, Lime, and Peppar flavored Bloody Mary, served with housemade pickles and classic toppings,” said Monger.

If you’re looking for something with less spice and more South Dakota homage, try the Black Hills Trilogy, consisting of a glass of Fifty Shades of White, Red Ass Rhubarb, and Burlesque.

Monger went on to explain that once the steakhouse closes, the space is transformed into a different kind of FLYT. “We close the restaurant and then FLYT Nightclub opens in the same space, though we're run by Alpine Inn and the club is operated by the resort itself,” said Monger.

The nightclub is open every Friday and Saturday, and utilizes the intense lighting and unique layout, while incorporating a DJ booth, VIP section, and dance floor.

“Its upscale and exhilarating atmosphere offers a premier destination for ‘very important partiers,’” said marketing manager of Cadillac Jack's Aftin Eich. “This includes dancing, DJs, live bands, and Vegas-style drink options.”

Unlike FLYT Steakhouse, FLYT Nightclub does not offer drinks in flight form, though choices seem to be never-ending.

“You can start your night off in style with the GET LIT Happy Hour or with Be the Real VIP bottle service,” said Eich.

Bottle service comes with three to five mixer options, garnishes, and ice.

Presented in a deluxe layout, FLYT plays on the idea of bringing Las Vegas to Deadwood through presentation and quality.

rookings’ newest doughnut shop is a family affair, and it all started at Pike Place Market.

Back in 2010, Teresa McDermott, her husband, Steve, and their children were living near Seattle and had been exploring Pike Place when they spotted a stand selling mini doughnuts.

After watching the stand’s machine operate, the McDermotts were hooked. They knew they needed their own doughnut machine.

“We figured, ‘They’re just throwing them in bags, why couldn’t we top them like regular doughnuts?’” said Teresa.

The family had their own trailer built in Canada, purchased a machine, and began developing recipes.

“We would set it up in our garage and have the neighbors come over to try our creations,” she said. “Our neighbors loved us.”

After perfecting their dough and toppings, the McDermotts opened the trailer up for business as Micro Doughnuts.

They started frequenting farmers’ markets, and the business took off.

Not long after, the family moved to Alamogordo, N.M. for Steve’s job. While there, they sold their doughnuts to airmen and their families at Holloman Air Force Base, as well as the food truck rallies in Las Cruces.

“We would have lines of 50 to 100 people waiting two hours for doughnuts,” said Teresa. “It was phenomenal.”

Two years ago, however, Steve’s job brought the family to Brookings.

“We were just sitting on the doughnut trailer,” she said. “We knew we needed to do something—either sell it or open a shop.”

So this past May, Micro Doughnuts opened the doors of its first brick-and-mortar location on 6th Street in Brookings.

Open from 6 a.m until 2 p.m. every day except Sunday, the shop cranks out hot mini doughnuts until closing time.

“We never run out because we make them fresh, as you order,” said Teresa.

Customers seeking more traditional mini doughnuts can purchase a bag of 12 tossed with either Powdered Sugar, Cinnamon Sugar, or a mixture of the two, dubbed Dirty Snow.

But if you’re looking for the true Micro Doughnuts experience, it’s best to pick an assortment of the McDermotts’ signature toppings. While customers can order just a single doughnut, it’s more fun (and filling) to create a box of 12—they're miniature, after all.

With 18 topping options, as well as unique seasonal creations, the possibilities are nearly endless. One of the top sellers is Maple Bacon, which is maple frosting with a bacon topping, says Teresa.

“It’s completely addicting,” she said.

Micro Doughnuts prides itself on the quality of the ingredients, as well as the family involvement. The McDermotts have six children, ranging in age from 16 to 35.

“It’s a complete family business, even though we’re not all living here,” said Teresa. “Everyone gives input. The kids will call and suggest new flavors, and I figure out how to make them. We strive for the best quality we can find, so people really do taste the difference.”

One topping combination is a nod to the McDermotts’ time in New Mexico—a red chile chocolate with pistachios from an Alamogordo farm.

Another popular combination is Peanut Butter and Jelly featuring Marionberry Jam, a blackberry spread local to Oregon.

Regular menu items include Plain Glaze, Maple, Chocolate, and Cream Cheese Frosting, with toppings such as peanuts, real fruit spreads, chocolate hazelnut spread, and cotton candy.

Though the shop already has a lineup of 18 delicious toppings, the staff are willing to go off menu for adventurous customers.

“If it’s possible, we’ll do it,” said Teresa.

Micro Doughnuts also creates special recipes for the seasons and holidays, including a S’Mores doughnut for summer which featured marshmallow cream and graham cracker crumbs, Peppermint Chunk topping at Christmas time, and most recently, Caramel Applesauce topping and Pumpkin Spice dough for autumn.

In addition to doughnuts, customers can order Kool Beans coffee, Jones Soda, milk, apple juice, and orange juice.

For now, Teresa says she’s focused on running the storefront, but she does have other ideas up her sleeve.

“I’ve been playing around with doughnut cakes,” she said. “I make a French buttercream that we layer between six-inch rounds of doughnuts. I’ve made chocolate, strawberry, and maple bacon, and they’ve all been phenomenal.”

The McDermotts have also been approached about weddings and other events, but they would need to purchase a second machine in order to get the trailer back in operation. At this point, however, they aren’t ruling anything out.

In the meantime, Teresa is busy sharing her flavor combinations with the Brookings community. When asked to pick a favorite, she hesitated.

“When it comes to the doughnuts, they’re all such a part of me that each one has a special memory and place in my heart,” she said. “But chocolate with peanuts goes way back, so that’s probably my favorite.”

“We’re really about zero waste and about sourcing locally,” she said. “It’s also about being aware and conscious of what we put into our bodies.”

Another favorite is the house-made kombucha, which can be tried as a Boochmosa (kombucha, orange juice, and riesling) or a Grape Basil Riesling (kombucha with Rushmore Riesling).

Along with wine, the eatery also serves craft beer.

Because of that mantra, Good Day sources its greens from local business Fretless Farms, which is run by a familiar South Dakota face.

Needing more of a caffeine fix? Try one of Good Day’s coffee drinks, like the Caramel Cinnamon Roll Latte.

“Most probably know her more as the musician, Jami Lynn,” said Bell. “They're the best greens I’ve ever seen.”

For gravy lovers out there, the Hot Mess is a must. This savory offering includes two pieces of sourdough bread topped with breakfast potatoes and house-made sausage gravy. Even hungrier? Add an egg on top of this one, as well.

Foodies can give these greens a try with meals like the Lumberjack’s Alternative. It has two “lovely eggies” atop a bed of "hardy greens," accompanied by house-roasted beets and creamy goat cheese, with two slices of sourdough toast.

As I arrived on a Wednesday afternoon, I realized that not only was it real, but the menu was huge. I’m talking pages and pages. This is a menu that Jon Taffer from Bar Rescue would go berserk over.

But guess what? I was jazzed about it.

Everything sounded good. A Chimichanga or Classic Fettuccine Alfredo? What did anyone do to deserve this? We’re all not worthy.

I digress. I walked into the quaint eatery on Main Street just a ways from downtown in a strip mall. There was some nice artwork, a lot of wine, and it was an all-around comforting atmosphere. Owner and chef Edwin Alvarez led the way to the sunnier room off to the right.

A wonderful setting for... just me.

As a backstory, half of the 605 team was leaving for the Black Hills in the morning, so I was all by my lonesome. I’m used to talking about experiences with a partner, but this time I was solo.

Alvarez kindly asked what I wanted to drink, and I asked for a water and Diet Pepsi and asked what they were known for. What I got was a house-made Lemonade, a Corona with lime, a giant Margarita, and a Chardonnay. (Don’t worry, I only took a sip of everything alcoholic except the chardonnay. Homegirl is not going to let that go to waste.) The lemonade was the best I’ve had in I don’t know when. I smashed it and would go to Yessica’s just for this.

Since the menu was so extensive, I asked Alvarez to pick.

For the first appetizer, he chose the Classic Bruschetta with “fresh garden-ripened tomatoes,” onions, fresh garlic and basil, served with toasted garlic bread. What the menu fails to mention is that mozzarella comes on top. Oh, and the bread is large and is conveniently cut into slices to easily share. Too bad I didn’t have a partner to help me.

Oh wait, Alvarez asked some sort of (very nice) salesperson to join us who was in working on orders or something of the sort. I found out his name was Dave Beaty, and he was with CashWa Distributing Company.

He was confused, as anyone would be if someone almost literally sat them down to eat with a stranger doing a restaurant review.

“Well I have a few more stops, but I guess I could,” he said, flustered.

As I ate the best bruschetta I’ve had in South Dakota, the other appetizer came out, Seared Ahi Tuna. I can’t believe this is an appetizer.

The menu description doesn’t do it justice, because it just says it’s served with white rice and special sauce. Two things I’ll say: There aren’t enough dishes with white rice locally, and the sauce was, in fact, special.

A dish that was more Spanish that Alvarez insisted I try was the Spain Paella. This is “the best recipe at Yessica’s” with seafront rice, sausage, and seafood. The seafood is whatever is fresh and available that day. For sure it had crab since the legs were sticking out of it. Am I a fan of graphic displays of what I’m eating? No. Am I impressed by plate presentation? Absolutely.

The dish was rich, but not to the point where you can only have a few bites before your stomach regrets it. And the sausage was killer.

A combination arrived, and I tried the Fajitas with the Combo, which had chicken, steak, and shrimp. The onions were extra fresh and crunchy, and I dug it.

At one point Yessica herself came out, and I asked why both Mexican and Italian were in the business model.

“This was a family idea,” she said.

As I ate Chocolate Cake with ice cream and chocolate drizzle, Alvarez came over and sat down next to me.

Chatting about the restaurant and his career, he said, “I have 30 years of experience in the kitchen: Mexican, Italian, Japanese, German, and French.”

I then asked his favorite dish. He said the Paella and the ribeye.

Which in that moment I realized—did I finally make a friend?

BOTTOM LINE This place is so impressive and is very unexpected for its location. You could go back for half a year and try something new each time. It’s also a great place for seafood lovers as there are a lot of options.

I will come back again and again and will probably get gluttonous with both Mexican and Italian, and the in-between.

I still can’t get over the food and presentation. Mozzarella on bruschetta?! Spain Paella?!

And the menu is massive, with over 15 Italian options alone and so many seafood options (including items like Ceviche and Lobster Ravioli).

The restaurant was very unassuming and almost didn’t fit the quality of the menu. There was plenty of seating, though, and it was larger than it appeared from the outside.

Meals range from $9 (hello, Tacos Mexicanos) to $30.99 (hot dang, Cowboy Ribeye). It all makes sense for what you get, but I’m curious to see the $19.99 soup, the Caldo de Camarón.

QUALITY, QUANTITY Even before finding and buying the lot, the Bodensteiners had a plan. From the very beginning, Lacey and Adam knew what they needed from a house and were simply waiting for the right piece of land.

“We just really wanted to minimize, simplify, and downsize,” said Lacey.

“We planned everything as mindfully as we could, and we just thought if we could build a smaller footprint but still have cool stuff in it, then it didn’t matter.”

And cool stuff they have. From their custom-made couch designed by Stone’s Furniture to their open-concept shelves made out of 1890s reclaimed wood, each room is furnished with exactly what it needs.

“This is our fourth house together, and each time we get a little better about knowing what we want or need,” said Lacey. “Like this couch—we needed something that fit everyone, and now we watch movies together every Friday.”

A ROOM At the top of the stairs, which are made from the same material as the kitchen shelves, are two bedrooms. Ellery and Linden share mirrored rooms with very different aesthetics.

“The rooms are the same in layout, but are completely different in décor,” explained Adam.

Said rooms are connected by a not-so-obvious space that was essential for their new home.

“Behind that closet door is a ladder that leads to a secret hideaway. It’s a space that belongs to the girls, and they love that it's theirs,” said Lacey.

Down the hall, just past the gumball machine, is the library. With floor-to-ceiling bookshelves and a roll of butcher paper, it’s no wonder the family spends a lot of time here.

“In our old house all of the craft stuff was in storage and we would have to pull it out. This time around, we thought we would put it all where they could reach it, and then maybe they’ll use it more.”

CONSTRUCTION Ending our tour in the master bedroom, it was definitely a last-but-not-least situation. One end of the space contains the master bathroom, complete with a free-standing tub and Lacey’s grandmother’s vanity seat, and the other end is an almost-panoramic view of Harney Peak.

“When we started building, I really wanted the bedroom wall to butt up against the wall of the bathroom, while still being open on both sides,” said Lacey. “This aspect of our home was nonnegotiable, but it interfered with our original plans, so it took a lot of time.”

Adam went on to explain that the extra walking space increased the overall size of the bedroom.

“We wanted to make all of our spaces to the minimal size that we possibly could,” said Adam.

“Even though our bedroom is bigger than we planned, we love it. We just love living here.”

A South Dakota business is revolutionizing the bakery industry, one muffin at a time.

Bizzy Lizzy Flourless Bakery is the first and only flourless bakery in the country, whipping up delicious cookies, bars, and muffins since 2007.

The bakery, based on the family farm in White, is a team effort between Sheila Rae and her daughter, Lizzy Olauson. A professional educator and public speaker, Rae has always loved to bake.

In 2007, she was searching for a way to feed her children a healthier breakfast when she stumbled upon inventing a nearly flourless cookie recipe that soon led to a new way of thinking about the food we eat.

“When I was creating the cookie, I got close to not using flour and mentioned it on the phone one day with my mom,” said Rae. “’What if I just made it without flour?’ And she said, ‘You can’t bake without flour, honey.’ And I said, ‘I think I can.’”

Rae and her family were living in Michigan at the time and started supplying the cafés at the University of Michigan with tasty flourless baked goods and confections, as well as selling at local farmer’s markets. The school challenged the baker to create a flourless muffin in three weeks.

Rae met the challenge, adding brownies and other bars to the line.

After outgrowing their basement bakery in Michigan, the family moved home to South Dakota, back to her parents’ farm. Now, Bizzy Lizzy Flourless Bakery supplies baked goods to all the South Dakota Hy-Vee locations, and numerous other stores throughout the Midwest.

Rae, her daughter, and the team make 1,500 muffins every Monday, and by Tuesday afternoon, they’re all sold.

“The muffins start with a fruit or vegetable as the main ingredient,” said Rae. “A lot of the produce we use in those muffins is grown locally. If it

can be grown in South Dakota, we're growing it.

We’re growing apples in our orchard, we grow wine grapes for our muffins. We grow pumpkins and carrots and squash. And what we don’t grow is grown a mile from us with organic principles.”

When inventing a new recipe, Rae likes to include at least seven grams of protein and four to five grams of fiber. A cookie or muffin from the Bizzy Lizzy Flourless Bakery is designed to keep you full for up to five hours.

The bakery often uses oatmeal, flax seeds, and peanut butter as substitutes for flour.

“This is just looking at a healthier way for our gut,” said Rae. “Our stomach is way happier eating oatmeal than it is when we put flour in it.”

In the stomach, flour can act as an inflammatory, according to Rae, absorbing liquid and making you feel sluggish. Oatmeal, on the other hand, is a lubricant to our gut and is "good for our hearts."

Bizzy Lizzy Flourless Bakery sells both pre-made items and mixes to take home and make with your family, available online and at stores around the Midwest. The bakery has expanded to include a pizza crust, cake mixes, granola, and various cookies and bars. The famous Andrew Bar, with a peanut butter base and gluten-free cereal, is the perfect sweet tooth treat.

“I think it’s making people look at food a little bit different because we all grew up using white flour,” said Rae. During the holidays, the bakery whips up truffles and sells gift baskets stuffed with a variety of tasty baked goods that can be picked up at your local Hy-Vee store.

HANG OUT WITH Sanaa Abourezk Sanaa Abourezk wears many (delicious) hats: she’s a gourmet chef, restaurateur, author, nutritionist, and blogger. But one thing is for sure: She’s passionate about the art of cooking.

Traveling is my special treat to myself and my family. Whenever I have time off, we travel somewhere. One year my daughter picks the destination and I pick the alternate year.

PLAYLISTS ARE MUSIC TO HER EARS Music is my comfort companion. I have a list that I play when I’m cooking, another list of music for when I’m reading, a list for when I’m cleaning, and a list for when I’m writing. I also love to dance, so when I’m cooking or cleaning I play the music very loud and start to move. I found dancing to be very relaxing and it elevates the mood.

FIGHTING (HUNGER) FOR A CAUSE Sanaa’s is having our annual fundraising dinner on November 16 to benefit Feeding South Dakota. We donate 100 percent of the proceeds to the nonprofit.

The restaurant is also going to hold its second Christmas party to raise money for our local Hungry Hearts. We also donate 100 percent of the proceeds to the charity. Keep up with Sanaa’s on social media for updates.

I found this way we go to destinations that are not on our horizon, but we end up falling in love with a new place. For example, two summers ago my daughter picked Alaska and I thought it would be way too cold for me. It was one of the best places I have been to.

Just Playin'

When I was growing up, I always thought playdates would be a bigger thing than they have been (so far). Being one of the only people I know with a baby, it was never something I put much emphasis on.

Until someone at daycare mentioned playdate etiquette, and I realized I hadn’t even thought about Sloan’s first playdate. Was it a real playdate if she didn’t really know how to play?

Would I call it a sit-date? Either way, I was beyond excited to take part in the cultural tradition of moms hanging out while their babies hang out.

I knew I wanted to do something that would be fun for everyone, and something that would be more memorable than iced tea in my living room.

With October just beginning, the Country Apple Orchard seemed like a no-brainer.

Leaves were just beginning to change and it offered just enough variety to keep both Sloan and I entertained.

Now that the location was set, Sloan and I needed someone to, well, play with.

Enter Maggie and Ada, our soon-to-be favorite playdate mates.

Maggie and I met when our husbands worked together at BronzeAge Art Casting, and we instantly bonded over how hard it was to get slurry stains out of clothes. From there we became quick friends and spent many a night around a fire, the four of us telling stories from college and beyond.

Obvious choice, right? Yes, except Ada, Maggie’s incredibly charismatic baby, is 6 months Sloan’s junior. Fast forward five years and it wouldn’t matter, but when that is the difference between walking and crawling, it seems a little daunting.

Or at least that’s what modern media had led me to believe. I was in the process of planning when I came across a sea of “guides” to playdates. How they should look, when they should happen, and what to expect. I was feeling overwhelmed when I realized these guidelines were unrealistic. More than that, they were boring.

No mud. No peanut butter. No direct sunlight. I felt like an exotic plant.

I knew that I wanted Sloan’s first playdate to feel like just that, and not like an interview for a prestigious preschool. And I knew that Ada would be the perfect tiny person to invite.

Boy, was I right.

We met at the apple orchard, babes in hand, ready to playdate the crap out of the day.

We started at the petting zoo, which could have been an entire day on it’s own. Both Sloan and Ada were intrigued by the goats and chickens, neither quite old enough to be afraid of strange animals.

Let parents parent. Your style of parenting is unique to your family, and vice versa. Remember to respect that when your children are playing together.

Just because your friends' kids are older or younger than yours doesn’t mean they can’t play. Find an activity that you can all do, and the kids will naturally flock to each other, no matter the age difference.

Sometimes sitting on the couch while your babies roll around on the floor together is just what you need as a parent.

Seeing Sloan and Ada sit in the train cars smiling and laughing, both a little confused but content, was so gratifying. We were not only introducing our children to socialization, but we were doing so in a safe and encouraging environment.

Maggie and I would joke that our babies had to be best friends, but seeing them laugh together was such a heartwarming and proud moment for both of us. There is something to be said for desperately wanting to instill kindness in your children, but it is a whole other ballgame to see it play out.

After picking some apples and getting too hot for anyone’s comfort, we decided the only thing left to do was plan the next get together… and take a nap.

I was nervous about the playdate because I wanted to make sure everyone had fun. I didn’t want Sloan to get jealous or get aggressive (as she does when she's excited), and I didn’t want Ada to be afraid of Sloan’s bold approach to friendship.

But to be honest, it was great. It was hot and the girls fussed and there were a ton of bugs, but it was still great. We got to watch our children interact and laugh, much like we had months before.

Talk about the apple not falling far from the tree. (Get it?)•
