LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER Alana Snyder PUBLISHER Alana Snyder DIRECTOR OF SALES AND MARKETING John Snyder MULTIMEDIA DESIGNERS Yany Avelar Tyson Schultz EDITORIAL ASSISTANT Kyle Determan ACCOUNT MANAGER Taylor Hanson PUBLISHING COPY EDITOR Kristal Seeden CONTRIBUTORS Austin Lammers Nick Hubbard Corinne Stremmel INTERN Keeley Meier
October's issue is always one of my favorites. Why? Well, I love history. And I love being scared. And we mix both. 605 gives readers a look into getting straight-up spooked with magician, hypnotist, and comedian Zac Tenneboe's (a.k.a. Z*Stonish) newest brainchild, Terror 29. This is one of the newest Sioux Falls haunted houses to get in the seasonal spirit. Kim Keehn of Deadwood mixes the creepy and historical with her new Deadwood Haunted History Ghost Tour. Are you a non-believer? Well, Keehn uses newspaper articles to tell creepy tales of the Black Hills. You can't really argue with that.

But what about the future? Want to know where you stand in the world using your birthday or aura? Sioux Falls' Alexander Kriech of Alexander Kriech Intuitive can do just that (or help you reach someone who has passed). This is just a glimpse of what this issue beholds. Beware: Proceed with caution. And maybe turn on that nightlight.

WHAT IS THE MOST HAUNTED PLACE YOU HAVE VISITED IN SOUTH DAKOTA?
“
The basement of the Vermillion Area Arts Council building, where I got married. It used to be a church but has since been converted, so it’s creepy and weird down there.”

COME VISIT
Beresford by Kyle Determan
Whether you know Beresford as the halfway mark between Vermillion and Sioux Falls, or as the home to Touch of Dutch Family Restaurant, chances are you’ve made a stop or two. 605’s summer interns Kaatje Weiland and Corinne Stremmel joined me in a venture past the interstate and down the main drag to see what else the I-29 stop had to offer. We started at Jack & Jill & Co., a home décor store owned by Beresford local Jill Heidebrecht. Open since October of 2018, Heidebrecht offers upcycled furniture, locally made home décor, vintage finds, and more.
1 8 \\\\\\\\\ O C T O B E R
“I’m a vendor-oriented store, so I try to have most things made by people here in South Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa, and just generally in the United States,” said Heidebrecht. Besides perusing items like wooden signs and repurposed bird cages, shoppers can also sign up for classes taught by the various vendors Heidebrecht carries. “We are open Thursday through Saturday, staying open later on Thursdays,” said Heidebrecht. “We not only host classes then, like calligraphy or sign-making classes, but sometimes people need those extra hours after dinner to shop.”

ADY LANE WAS NAMED AFTER BOTH OWNERS' DAUGHTERS: ADELYNN AND ADDISON.
Explaining the dangerous joy of shopping at every small town store to Kaatje and Corinne, I drove the two blocks to our next stop: Ady Lane Boutique. Owners Casie Schable and Kristin Jensen started as hair stylist and client, but quickly turned to best friends that shared the same dream. “I was ready for a career change and we just started mustering up things we were passionate about and this was it,” said Schable. Known for its staple pieces with a twist, Ady Lane focuses on clothing that can go from the office to the grocery store to the streets of downtown. “We strive for city chic,” said Jensen. “We want to make that cruise through your closet a little less stressful by adding pieces that you can be excited about.”

WOLFDOG COMEDY FALL TOUR OCTOBER 4-5 8 P.M.
Already excited about coming back to shop (or looking online), we crossed the street to our final stop of the day, where we met Klassix Bar owner Lonnie Merriman for a tour of the infamous “destination.” “Klassix is all about entertainment. We have dartboards, live music, and a state-of-the-art golf simulator,” said Merriman. Once being "the biggest seller of Fireball Whiskey in South Dakota" and known for their wings, Klassix has been hosting different leagues, street dances, and community gatherings since February of 2016. “We consistently have good food and great service,” said Merriman. “I’m open seven days a week during the football season, and those Sundays usually turn into a community potluck. Everyone really gets along.”

Education: Haunted History Walking Ghost Tours

by Austin Lammers Photography by Hubbard Visuals
Kim Keehn has a knack for meshing the historical and paranormal. In a town enlivened by the stories of its former gamblers and gunslingers, she keeps the dead alive with her words. For the last 17 years, Keehn has relayed the tales of Deadwood’s haunted past to the scores of visitors who trek up to the historic town during the warmer parts of the year. She spent eight years doing so at Boot Hill Bus Tours and eight more at the Historic Bullock Hotel. This year, though, Keehn went independent and on May 14 began guiding tours for her own business: Haunted History Walking Ghost Tours.
During the hour-long tours, Keehn takes her groups from the Old Style Saloon No. 10 up Main Street and over to Sherman Street thrice a day during busy season, telling the stories of the figures who’ve resurfaced as spirits along the cobblestone street.
Keehn herself hadn’t encountered the supernatural until her time at the Bullock. One winter night, she and her co-worker at the front desk—the only two in the building—were chatting when an aroma of cigar smoke seeped into the lobby. The phone rang as her co-worker tried to investigate, so instead Keehn went. Outside, only silence. As she walked back to the desk, the scent was so thick “it was like burning in your eyes.”
“There seems to be a theme in frontier towns where there was unrequited love,” said Keehn, whose stories coincidentally all involve murdered women. “Whether it’s Deadwood or Colorado, they killed the person and committed suicide.”
She described the memory with a reserved tone— like you would a city council meeting or a trip to the grocery store. She’s a storyteller, not a fanatic. Her interest in the supernatural doesn’t bleed into the dramatic ghost-hunting TV shows that air after dark, which she calls “embellished and stupid.”
"
"THE IDEA JUST POPPED INTO MY HEAD: YOU’VE DONE TOURS FOR EIGHT YEARS, WHY NOT DO YOUR OWN?" The stories are educational just as much as they are entertaining. Keehn, a self-proclaimed “history freak,” dug through years of newspaper clippings in search of reports of hauntings in Deadwood, first on microfilm, and then, to her relief, digitally.
“I love the history and I love sharing it,” said Keehn. “I think it’s a great job for me because I like talking about history and I actually have an audience that’s not running away from me. You get people that are totally off the wall, and then you get people who are neurosurgeons and they’re telling me their stories, and you’re like, ‘This is really cool. These things happen,’” (continued on page 28).

Kitty LeRoy and Sam Curley Here is just one story Keehn tells her tourists as she guides them along the streets of downtown Deadwood.
By the time she was 10 years old in the 1860s, Kitty LeRoy was a jig dancer in Michigan. She married at 15 and had a child, but left to travel the country and seek a fortune. In 1876, LeRoy arrived in Deadwood after hearing of the Gold Rush; it’s believed she traveled on the same wagon train as Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane, along with another man she fancied. A year later, she married a faro card dealer named Sam Curley—her fifth husband. That winter, Curley was called to leave town and LeRoy returned to the man with whom she arrived in town. Upon catching word, Curley returned to Deadwood in a rage and marched to LeRoy’s room at the Lone Star Saloon, where he shot LeRoy, then 27 years old, and himself. Their double funeral was held at the Saloon just six months after their wedding. In 1877, tenants at the Saloon reported sightings of apparitions and unexplained noises to the newspaper: “Always the woman come le if not beautiful, and always behind her the form of the man who was the cause of their double death. In the stillness of the night, they still tread the stairs where they once lived and held each other in loving embrace, and then they fade away into the night.” The Flood of 1883 washed away the Saloon, and today Keehn wonders if the spirits were taken downstream with the floodwaters or if they’ve found home in the buildings next door.

HAUNTED HISTORY WALKING TOURS
Keehn’s had no shortage of listeners in the first few months of her walks—her soles have already worn through on a pair of shoes. But as the calendar moves deeper into autumn and tourist season slows, Keehn will drop from three to one tour a day (see side bar). Given it’s her inaugural year as a solo guide, she hasn’t cemented an end date: only the weather can stop her. If a sunny day in January thaws Deadwood’s sidewalks and she gets a call inquiring about a tour, she’s happy to walk the block, she said. Through the fall, she’ll continue to narrate her tours with the knowledge of a researcher and the tongue of a raconteur. “I pretend how I’d want to hear a tour. If I were a tourist and I was going to go on a tour, I wouldn’t want to listen to someone who goes ‘bleh bleh bleh,’” she said. “I just try to have a beginner’s mind: this person hasn’t been to Deadwood before, they don’t know the story.”

Located just off of Main Street in Vermillion is the Austin-Whittemore House. Built in 1882 for Horace Austin, this multistory home stands as an accurate representation of rural towns in the 1880s. The 605 team met with executive director Wess Pravecek to learn more about the history that keeps this house alive.
HOME + LIVING
History in the Making Horace Austin came to South Dakota as a land surveyor, and after meeting his wife, Rachel Ross, was in need of a house to match his philanthropic lifestyle. He enrolled the help of Andrew Pickett who was known around town as the builder of beautiful things. “Mr. Pickett’s wife, Helen, was pregnant at the time of the build,” said Pravecek. “Mrs. Pickett died shortly after childbirth, and since the Austins couldn’t have children, they took "Little Helen" in as their own.” Pravecek went on to explain that when Little Helen's father passed away, Rachel Pickett felt the house was too big for just two people, setting in motion her love for entertaining. “Shortly after Mr. Austin died, Mrs. Austin decided to add on a kitchen and a living room,” said Pravecek. “She wanted to give back and entertain as much as she could.” Pansy went on to marry Arthur Whittemore, one of the first football coaches at the University of South Dakota, and raise five kids in the very home in which she grew up.

It's All in the Details In efforts to pay homage to the impact the Austin family had on the community, the Clay County Historical Society partnered with the remaining family to restore the house to its original state. “They had to really follow the ins and outs of the South Dakota State Historical Society and the State Historic Preservation Office,” said Pravecek. “The kitchen could only be white or cream and all the wallpaper in the house had to be some kind of small print.” From the living room to the bedrooms, all of the elements of the home not only tie to the 1800s, but have some relationship to Clay County. “The piano is from Wakonda and some of the bedroom furniture is native to the family,” explained Pravecek. “Some pieces are more unique than others, like this framed art I found in the attic, which is made entirely from human hair.”

Preserving the Past The furniture isn’t the only thing that makes patrons feel at one with the past. Pravecek mentioned a few other kinds of patrons during our tour of the "maid’s quarters" turned nursery. “There are a lot of folks that really feel like the spirits of Horace Austin and his daughter Pansy still live here in the house,” said Pravecek. With history on her side, Pravecek uses the house’s original architecture to create her own spooky scenarios during the Halloween season. “There is a second staircase that leads to the cupola. It was called the widow’s walk because wives would wait for their husbands to come back from the sea, and if they didn’t come back, they became a widow,” said Pravecek. “I like to put a ghost up there in October and use a backlight as a fun way to celebrate the history of the home.”

“I LOVE SEEING ALL OF THE PEOPLE’S FACES IN THE LANTERN WHEN I’M ACTING OUT A SCENE.”
C U LT U R E + E N T E R TA I N M E N T
I STARTED DOING THIS EVENT… the first year it was held and have performed every year other than two when I took a break. I hate to miss it.
HOW THE EVENT WORKS IS… we get to portray famous people in history from the Sioux Falls area who happen to be buried in Woodlawn Cemetery. Guides with lanterns bring small groups around to each actor to hear our stories.
WHAT IS REALLY UNIQUE ABOUT THIS EVENT IS… it’s done in the dark in the beautiful cemetery. It’s not a ‘jump out and scare’ event, but it’s history told in a fun and entertaining way. I mean, walking through the cemetery by lantern light? How much fun is that?!
MY CHARACTER IN "VOICES IN THE PAST"… is once again Luella Belle
Pettigrew. She was the sister of R.F. Pettigrew, the first U.S. Senator from South Dakota. Luella Belle was fascinating as an educator, missionary, and leader of the Anti-Saloon league. She certainly had something to say!
I’M PERFORMING WITH… two of my
favorite actresses, Glenda Kluckman and Tiffany Clanton, who portray another Pettigrew sister and sister-in-law. We love performing together.
MY FAVORITE PART OF DOING THIS EVENT IS… the stories. [Siouxland
Heritage Museums education assistant] Paavo Rasmussen does so much research on the people we're going to portray and then writes the scripts for the performances. I love learning why it's named Phillips Avenue, who were the Millers from Miller Funeral Home, etc. That and performing with Glenda and Tiffany. The three of us together have so much fun! 6 0 5 M A G A Z I N E . C O M \\\\\\\\\ 4 1

A MOMENT THAT STANDS OUT FROM THE EVENT IS… one year I
portrayed the murdered wife of Thomas Egan, the first man executed in Sioux Falls. He was accused of murdering her and was hanged on the site of what is now the Minnehaha County Museum. It took them three tries, as the rope broke twice. And in the end, his daughter confessed on her deathbed that she killed her stepmother and let her father hang for it.
ONE THING THAT REALLY SPOOKS ME OUT IS… when I’ve portrayed a character by myself, standing in the silent cemetery alone, under a full moon. It’s beautiful, but it really gets my imagination going.
OTHER FALL ACTIVITIES I LOVE ARE… going to pick apples at the orchard, picking out pumpkins to

decorate my front step, and walking through the Outdoor Campus while the leaves are changing.
MY FAVORITE PLACE TO GRAB A BITE OR DRINK IS… for coffee I love
Josiah’s [Coffeehouse, Café & Bakery] downtown, and for dinner I always enjoy Jacky’s [Restaurant]—so good!
MY DAY JOB IS… I’m a travel agent. My husband and I own our own agency [Up N Away Travels] and it makes me so happy. I work really hard, but I really am an example of if you do what you love, you never work a day in your life.
WHEN I’M NOT ACTING OR WORKING, I’M... traveling. I’m blessed to travel with my husband several times a year. I never actually vacation, though, as I bring work with me, but working while sitting on the beach isn’t so bad.
I’VE ALSO ACTED… at the Worthing dinner theater, with the Bare Bodkins Theatre Company, and many times on the stage at the historic Orpheum [Theater Center] downtown.
RIGHT NOW I’M READING… a travel guide to San Juan, Puerto Rico. We’re going there in December for the first time and I want to learn everything I can.
MY CURRENT HOBBY IS… online games. It's a nice break from work.
MY FAVORITE THING ABOUT SIOUX FALLS IS… it’s such a great city. Amazing food, theater, art, parks, schools—it’s why we moved back home from Minneapolis to raise our kids here.

For those who love to be horrified and for those who don’t, the Haunted Farm in Worthing is for you. “There’s a scary ticket and a nonscary ticket,” said owner Paula Bell. Want to be scared? Enter the Haunted Barn (dubbed The Loft of Lunatics) or the Haunted Woods with over 30 actors ready to frighten you. Want a more peaceful fall evening? Take a walk on the Dark Trail, check out (adorable) baby animals, and go on one of the hayrides.
WHAT
Bell is the mastermind of the “25 screaming acres of fun and fear” that change every year, and says she can get into the minds of the brave patrons who dare to walk into her unnerving scenarios. 605 caught up with the creative to see what she does on the daily when she’s not shopping for costumes or thinking of the next scare around the corner.

Szechwan Chinese Restaurant
You are what you think of every morning. If your first thought is a good one and is also a way of making someone happy, your whole day is going to be great. It’s all what you look for in life. Live like everything you’re doing is for someone else, because when you do, you get that much more out of it.
I love duck with hot garlic sauce. It’s a little out of the ordinary, but it’s what I like there.
Midco Aquatic Center I have an exercise routine that I do in the water. It’s pretty strenuous, but it keeps me younger. I have a bad back, so going there really helps it.
Marlin’s Family Restaurant When I go there I love to eat ribs or hamburgers. We grew up as farmers, so we love meat.
The Snack Shack We can seat about 100 people in our Snack Shack at the Haunted Farm. I designed the building and I love how it turned out. Hot chocolate and haunts just seem to go together.
Wineries We have grapevines on the farm, and it always reminds me that I would love to check out more local wineries. First on my list would be Strawbale Winery because I love all of the unique events they put on.

Looking for Fun I really enjoy taking my grandkids places, like Skyzone or Air Madness. The fact that the grandkids can do all kinds of flips is really neat. We also go to the [Sioux Empire] Fair every year. I just love hearing them have fun. People need to listen to fun more, and that’s why I love what I do. Terror 29: A (Scary) Illusionist Experience by Corinne Stremmel
Sioux Falls magician, hypnotist, comedian, and now haunted house owner and producer, Zac Tenneboe (stage name “Z*Stonish”), has some new tricks up his sleeve. Tenneboe’s latest project, Terror 29, is a way of combining all of his passions into a scary new attraction. “I’ve always been obsessed with Halloween. Growing up my favorite shows were The Munsters and The Addams Family,” said Tenneboe. As a kid, he said he remembers his parents putting on their own “home haunt.” He especially remembers his father, also a magician, doing magic for the trick-or-treaters.
“Kids would come up to the door and grab a piece of candy that would float in mid air and then fire would go off,” said Tenneboe. Originally, Tenneboe had plans to remake the haunted house he remembers from his childhood, but he decided to go for something bigger. With a magician in charge, he says visitors can expect a unique, eerie experience unlike any other they’ve seen before. Tenneboe said he plans on incorporating elements of illusion and magic similar to his methods normally seen on stage. He said with his background and by studying a lot of psychology, he is able to know what people are thinking and where they might be looking when going through a haunted house. “I just wanted to do something different,” he said.

Attention to detail is another aspect Tenneboe stressed. He said he hopes avid thrill seekers like himself will have an evening to remember at Terror 29. And for those who have never been to a haunted house, Tenneboe hopes to set the bar high. “I hope they’re really blown away and impressed with the work and the time we have dedicated to it,” said Tenneboe. It’s not all terrifying, though. Since Tenneboe doubles as a comedian, he’s also added some small comedic elements for visitors waiting in line.

“TERROR 29 WILL BE AN EXPERIENCE DIFFERENT FOR [ATTENDEES] THAN WHAT THEY CAN GET AROUND THIS AREA OR IN SIOUX FALLS.” The last weekend Terror 29 will be open will be Halloween weekend and will end November 2 with a Lights Out Event. Tenneboe says this event is for hardcore haunted house fans. “It’s pitch dark and you’re given a flashlight and you’re told to go through, so it’ll be super cool,” said Tenneboe. For those looking for something a little less scary, Terror 29 will host a Children’s Day on October 27. Visitors can go through a version of the attraction that is aimed for a younger audience. There will also be face painting and balloon animals from Mr. Twister. Tenneboe says he doesn’t want to limit Terror 29 to just Halloween. He’s also entertained the idea of hosting a Bloody Valentine event, and even a Krampusthemed haunt during the holidays. As Tenneboe’s creativity expands, he says that people can expect plenty more ideas from him in the future.

“EAT. DRINK. REPEAT.”
Todd VanSickler. “We’re in a historic building, so we went a little bit more modern, more clean-lined, but yet kept that historical feeling inside the building.”
Doohen. “There’s The Cascade [at Falls Park], lofts in the Jones[421], the Gourley Building—there’s built-in residential that we never had before that we can appeal to now.”
Since 2007, Wiley’s Tavern has been known for happy hour and for its active nightlife. Now reemerging as Wileys, the modern rebrand launched in September with earlier opening hours, a sleek new look inside and out, and a revamped food and drink menu.
VanSickler said a misconception Wileys has had to overcome is that “it’s that young dance bar.” They’ve worked on the project for almost a year, and were inspired by surrounding restaurants like Parker’s Bistro and Ode to Food & Drinks and the growth of downtown residents to step up their game.
Stepping up includes the Lion’s Paw Mussels appetizer with whole bleu mussels simmered in Fernson’s Lion’s Paw lager with garlic, lemon, and butter, and served with grilled pita bread.
“We pretty much did a remodel from brand new floors to a brand new center bar. There are new booths and new tabletops. We really cleaned up the whole building,” said owner

“Everything downtown is developing and growing, and we wanted to stay with the trend and grow with downtown,” said owner Greg
They also released the Gouda Mac & Cheese with grilled chicken breast, bacon bits, and bowtie pasta tossed in a creamy smoked Gouda cheese sauce and topped with toasted breadcrumbs.

A TE AM EFFO RT Elevating everything from the new tabletops to the food menu, Wileys also kicked it up a notch with cocktails. Owner Greg Doohen said bar staff had a big hand in the new drink menu. “We got all of our bartenders together and made sure they were a part of the new menu so they would get behind it,” said Doohen. “We took a lot of drinks they created themselves with stuff they’ve worked with and liked to make and serve on their own.” See for yourself by trying one, like the Maddie Special with Ron Diaz Coconut Rum, Kinky Pink, lemonade, lemon lime soda, and grenadine.

Another new comfort food option is the Wileys Tater Tot Casserole “as good as Mom makes” with seasoned ground beef, roasted onions and peppers tossed in a creamy mushroom sauce, and topped with shredded cheese and tater tots. When asked what their favorite new item currently was, they both didn’t hesitate to say the Bourbon BBQ Pork Tenderloin. These smoked pork tenderloin medallions are “grilled to perfection” and are served with a bourbon BBQ sauce with roasted onions and peppers. “We have a huge smoker in house and we’ll smoke the Guinness Prime Rib and pork [tenderloin],” said VanSickler. For those who were familiar with its previous menu, the owners kept favorites and “elevated” those as well. This includes the Blistered Shishito Peppers with fresh shishito peppers sautéed with soy sauce and served with a sweet and spicy ginger sauce. “They’re a roulette of peppers. One out of 10 will be really spicy,” said VanSickler. “Don’t worry, it won’t light you up, though.”

This scenario also has a mimosa bar, which VanSickler said has every candy you can think of to rim your glass with, like Pop Rocks. But don’t think the nightlife or Fishbowl Fridays will change. Both owners said they’re excited to continue to bring in entertainment from all over the nation, like the recent DJ Dynamix from Los Angeles. “Our night crowd on weekends is amazing, and I really think we can have the two crowds,” said VanSickler.
Wileys also kept their popular flatbreads, including the Bloody Mary with Wileys zesty Bloody Mary sauce topped with jalapeño bacon, pickles, green olives, mozzarella, and celery. Speaking of a Bloody Mary, Wileys also opens early at 11 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays for football and has “the largest Bloody Mary bar in Sioux Falls.” This has everything to throw in

lexander Kriech says he’s always been drawn to the paranormal, spiritual, and the metaphysical. He buried himself in books at the local library about UFOs, ghosts, and afterlife experiences. Then, while a student at Iowa State University, Kriech said he had gone through life changes that made him evaluate the world around him. He recalled, “I had just come out as gay and was also an ex-Luthern at that time, as well. I was very depressed and was tremendously anxious and had no idea what I wanted to do. The whole world had just opened up as to what do I believe now?”
Check your credit report on demand That’s when he discovered Numerology in an online psychic forum. According to the dictionary, Numerology is “the branch of knowledge that deals with the occult significance of numbers.” In this circumstance, it’s using a person’s full name and the numbers of their birthdate for a reading.
Resources to improve your financial health
Kriech found Dr. Lauren Cielo of Golden Rose Psychic Services during that same search and booked a full reading with her. “Based on just my birthdate and my full birth name she told me so many specific things about me, and this is before social media was really big. I knew I had to learn this,” he said. He got right to it and took classes. Kriech started doing readings for family and friends and then started doing it professionally in 2014. Now he’s also a psychic medium and a reiki healer working with clients in Sioux Falls at his office in 8th & Railroad and all over the world via phone and video Distant Sessions.

Each service he provides is different but all has to do with spirituality and energy. “[For Numerology], I take your full name at birth and your birthday and I break it down to very simple addition that gets you these certain numbers, so if we add your birthday across you chat about what that number means,” he described. “I talk about that, your talents and abilities, why you’re here, what your path is, what your strengths are, what’s coming up for you, that sort of thing.” On the psychic side, Kriech said people typically ask what’s on the horizon in their life or career. “Typically I always start with what’s called a ‘Rose Reading,’” he said. “I see your energy as a rose metaphorically and I just start talking. For example, ‘Your rose looks purple,’ or, ‘Your rose looks very sad.’ Usually if I’m seeing something,
it’s why they’re here. And then I start reading their aura. The first layer of your aura is how you present yourself to the world and it contains general information about you.” Along with the aura, Rose Readings also use energy like chakras and the physical body to read the client. “I was reading this guy and he had red and blue [aura], and for some reason red felt like daredevil energy because it’s more physical and the blue felt more nurturing,” he said. “It turns out he’s a skateboarder and he does daycare for his job, so sometimes it's very literal.” Kriech also has clients who want to talk to someone “on the other side,” so he provides Clairvoyant Readings to “deliver messages to you from [the] Spirit.”

“Sometimes I will feel an energy come in the middle of a reading and I can tell it’s someone who has passed over. I’ll sense male or female, which side of the family they come from,” he said. “A lot of it is translating visual cues.” Kriech teaches workshops and Psychic Development classes, and one of his sessions with a student really stood out. “[The student and I] were practicing mediumship, and I saw this woman in my mind and I saw this old-looking dress in early 1900s or the Victorian era," he recalled. "I saw a bunch of children crawling all over her and I saw these books and her writing; teaching and education were important to her. I also saw a vivid image of a rose garden.” He continued, “My student told me that it was her great grandmother who loved her rose garden and published books in three languages. She was a teacher and had four children and adopted her husband’s children. It’s great when you have that validation.” Sometimes it can almost be overwhelming during a reading. “My palms can get sweaty, but for the most part I get really emotional at times,” he said. “When a family member comes in, it will plug into my heart chakra and I’ll get really emotional. It’s so hard to even describe, it’s a huge feeling of love.” And last, but not least, he provides Reiki Healing, which is “a healing technique based on the principle that the therapist can channel energy into the patient by means of touch, to activate the natural healing processes of the patient's body and restore physical and emotional well-being.”

“EVERYONE HAS SOME SORT OF INNATE PSYCHIC SENSE THAT THEY’RE STRONG WITH. I THINK PSYCHIC STUFF IS DEFINITELY FOR EVERYONE AND ANYONE CAN CULTIVATE IT. I JUST HAPPEN TO BE SUPER INTO IT AND THAT’S WHY I WENT INTO THIS SORT OF ROUTE.” “I don't actually touch the person,” said Kriech. “It sounds weird, but I focus on channeling this energy called reiki into my body and out through my hands. That’s one of the few metaphysical tools where there is science backing it up for helping physical pain and stress and anxiety.” At the beginning of the session, Kriech will “set the intention” of the healing. This can be anything from a sports accident to an emotional pain. “I’ve had people going through a breakup who feel horrible, so we reset their energetic system,” he said. “Or I’ve had someone going through childhood trauma.”
While Kriech is constantly feeling energies around him, he said he can turn it off outside of the office. “I don’t walk around like the Long Island Medium and have a message for people in a grocery store,” he said. “I have to be focused and in the zone, because when I do a reading I have to be in a meditative state. I have to be really neutral. It’s weird because when I start connecting emotionally with my client that’s when I lose my neutrality and it’s hard for me to read them.” But he will do a Numerology reading from time to time with friends at the bar.
Even Kriech is affected during the Reiki Healing.
“There are many birthdates scrawled on a bar napkin,” he laughed.
“I let it flow through me. I’m receiving the energy as well, so I’ll feel really relaxed and kind of high afterward,” he described.

hile downtown Sioux Falls is full of incredible options for dining out, it’s not overflowing with graband-go scenarios. So when the news broke that a quick dining concept was going into the former Pappy’s location in the DocuTap building on Phillips Avenue, the 605 office (located in Cherapa Place downtown) rejoiced. 7 0 \\\\\\\\\ O C T O B E R
Agua Fresh opened its second location (the other being in the Empire Mall) in July and offers items like salads, sandwiches, wraps, and fresh juices and smoothies. I headed over to check it out with 605’s Kyle Determan on a Friday afternoon. The restaurant, which “pursues health and happiness,” is very modern and chic inside. Everyone I’ve talked to who has stopped in immediately talks about the genius “love” wall that begs patrons to take a photo with it for social media. Note to other businesses: this is one of the easiest ways to get free publicity—do this.

We met owner Sinan Taskin, who gave us a quick tour, which included an area where people can sit and play video games. He then helped us pick out (so many) items to try, and the staff’s enthusiasm for their menu was clear. As we asked Sinan which smoothie to taste, a team member yelled, “Yankee Candle. You want the Yankee Candle.” And so we did. This fruit and veggie smoothie included peach, pineapple, mango, strawberry, banana, fresh carrot juice, and fresh green apple juice. When I asked Kyle what her initial reaction was as she sipped it, she said, “It’s named after... a candle?” After that, her next word was “tropical.” And then, a few more sips later, she said, “You know when you make a smoothie at home and you can tell there’s no sugar in it? I can’t tell with this.”
Sinan told us that all of the drinks we would be trying were sugar free, minus the Berry Blast. The crush juice had strawberry, raspberry, blueberry, and blackberry. We soon realized it was a fun game to have one of us hold the menu and the other would guess what all was in the (healthy) beverages. It was harder than you would think. As I started drinking the Green Delight, I said, “I don’t know if this is in my head or is real, but I feel like my body is reacting to actually drinking healthy drinks right now.” Kyle and I then both looked at each other and admitted we’re terribly unhealthy humans on the regular and that we need a place like this to challenge our love for fried foods.

The Green Delight is an energizer juice and is one-fourth pineapple, a handful of spinach, one-half cucumber, and fresh mint. My second sip in, I squinted my face, expecting to hate something so good for me, and it was actually very tasty. Food-wise, we started with the Greek Salad. I squealed when it came out in a plastic bowl with a top on it so you can shake the ingredients, just like they have on Keeping Up With the Kardashians (yes, judge me, I deserve it). The spring mix salad has smoked turkey, feta cheese, walnut, blueberry, and tomato. It came with Italian dressing, which I thought might be weird, but it worked. The combo of flavors was very satisfying, and it was a super fresh to-go item I will be getting again. “You know, I was a little nervous about berries with feta, but I like it, said Kyle.

Our panini of choice was The Chicken Pesto. It had grilled chicken, pesto sauce, provolone, and tomato. Definitely a solid pesto sandwich, and it came with regular potato chips. Then a work of art came out in the form of the Dragon Bowl. The “super bowl” consisted of dragon fruit, vanilla yogurt, and a choice of three toppings. I chose banana, chia seeds, and kiwi. Again, this was uncharted territory for us. “I literally think the closest thing I’ve had to this is [Bacardi] Dragon Berry,” said Kyle. “I love this.” The bowl was huge, and I don’t know how anyone could finish one solo.•
BOTTOM LINE Agua Fresh is a solid choice for a light meal. It seems like it’s hard to find healthy to-go options in Sioux Falls in general, and this is a much-welcomed option. Also, Sinan and his staff are super friendly and are passionate about what they do, which makes it even better.

I don’t mean to pull an Aladdin, but this is a whole new world for me. A berry taste… a wondrous place… for you and me. In all seriousness, there aren’t a lot of places where you can get fresh juices without sugar, so get in there.
Fresh is in the name, is within the products, and is in the restaurant aesthetic. There’s green plant life and modern furniture, and I really liked the giant dispensers where you can see the freshly mixed juices. This makes for a perfect spot to meet friends for lunch or for coffee during a work meeting.
Everything is under $10, which is easy on the wallet and is easy to grab and take back to the office. Again, this is a great meeting place that is not only easy on the eyes, but is budget friendly for sales meetings and/or interviews.

Sweet and soft, toffee, and dark chocolate with a citrusy brightness. Genteel but likable all the same.
Very sweet and rich with lots of fruit acidity; tamarind, mango, plum, citrus fruit, and caramel syrup flavors.
A bolder version of Sturgis Coffee Company's popular Heavy Metal Blend that embraces more of the dark, char-like coffee blend that many are accustomed to. This blend is Sturgis' first choice for a deep French press coffee that will rock your mornings.

WHERE THE CHILD THINGS ARE
BUTTONS & BROOMSTICKS by Kyle Determan
H
alloween is by far my favorite holiday. I love fall. I love candy. And I love DIY anything. Needless to say, my husband Reid puts up with a lot in the month of October.
We started brainstorming our first family costume as soon as we found out I was pregnant. We threw around ideas that ranged from 90s sitcom characters to food combinations, finally settling on us being farmers and Sloan being a chicken. Cute, right?
From decorations to the constant smell of my favorite Mulled Cider candle from Walmart, the season of falling leaves is in full swing at the Determan house, and the homemade costumes are no exception.
Until the construction began. There were so many feathers and even though I couldn’t feel my fingers from the hot glue gun burns, I was feeling pretty confident in the fact that it looked like a chicken, or at least a bird.
A family friend had knitted booties and a hat that acted as her comb, so all we had left to do was put her in it. Little did I know that would be worse than gluing a feather to my phone. The funny thing about gluing things onto a onesie is that it doesn’t account for baby bellies; and if you don’t know what I'm talking about, babies have this innate ability to look cute, cuddly, and perfect while maintaining the beer belly of a 40-year-old man.

No judgement, just an observation. An observation that came a little too late.
reconvened at Yany’s apartment to make Halloween magic.
After ten minutes of me trying to console Sloan, and Reid trying to console me, we were finally two farmers and a chicken—a very angry chicken.
Of course, in typical Sloan fashion, she fell asleep as soon as we pulled into the parking lot, and proceeded to sleep while we laid out our supplies, making cut marks and game plans.
One year later and thanks to a Bravo channelthemed babyshower, I had a long blonde wig that screamed Rapunzel and a baby that was dying to be her chameleon, Pascal (I assumed).
Once our chameleon-in-training graced us with her consciousness, we got started on the first phase of the costume: the eyes.
Already having a Disney prince for a husband, it took zero convincing from me to solidify our family costume. The convincing, however, came later, when I desperately needed help in actually making said costumes.
Made with puff balls and two different sized buttons, all we needed was a hot glue gun. This was 100 percent in my realm of abilities, and something Sloan could “help” with by handing me the fluffy white poms.
Enter 605’s multimedia designer and seamstress extraordinaire, Yany Avelar.
Unfortunately, that’s where it ended. Sloan became enamored with the paint brushes, I became frustrated with my lack of sewing knowledge, and Yany became a hero by offering to help with the rest. And by help, I mean make.
After last year’s fiasco and now that Sloan is mobile, I needed all of the help I could get. We searched the depths of Pinterest, made multiple trips to the craft store, and

WHAT I ’ VE LE ARNED ++
Babies are like magnets when it comes to choking hazards. If you're working with beads, buttons, or even small spools of thread, make sure they're in a closed container or out of your baby’s reach.
++
If you're adding to an alreadymade onesie or outfit, let them run around in the finished piece. It will allow you time to make the details and will make it less daunting for them on Halloween night.
++
With that being said, make sure you leave enough room for them to actually get into the costume. One way to avoid shrinking the base outfit is by stuffing it with a pillow, blanket, or even a stuffed animal of similar size to your little one.
LIFESTYLE
Listen, I am all for DIY projects and when I have ample time, I can really knock out some neat pieces. However, my sewing days ended after I miserably failed at making my own eighth grade graduation dress, so this was no longer in my wheelhouse.
Organize your supplies into color-coordinated piles. Then ask your little one to hand you the different materials in different colors. Invest in toddler training scissors. That way they can “cut” extra fabric or paper while you are actually cutting, giving them a sense of accomplishment and you a sense of safety.
Yany and her fiancé, Ethan, were gracious (and talented) enough to not only finish her costume, but to make it the cutest thing I have ever seen. The best part? It wasn’t going to squish her like a sausage. If I hadn’t let go of my neverending mom guilt and need to do everything myself, I would still be trying to sew a tail that didn’t look like an extra flap of fabric. Being the Better Homes & Gardens DIY mom is fun and exciting, but it isn’t always realistic. Sloan is going to have a bomb Halloween costume, which means our family will have a bomb Halloween costume, and that was all because of the help of our great friends. Doing it (all) yourself is impossible. It takes a village, right? Hey, maybe next year we will be The Village People.•

ASK THE JOHNS
Know Your SD
+ YES, ALL THREE OF THESE GUYS ARE NAMED JOHN. YES, IT WAS A POPULAR NAME IN THE ‘80S. THE IDENTITIES OF THESE THREE AMIGOS HAVE BEEN ALTERED TO PROTECT THE INNOCENT. HAVE A QUESTION FOR THE JOHNS? SHOOT AN E-MAIL THEIR WAY: THEJOHNS@605MAGAZINE.COM.
JR: That’s easy! Tell your friends you’ll Venmo them once they get you into the event, then drop your phone in your beer in front of them and act super panicked. Problem solved. JW: "Dine and dash" is a
term that comes to mind. Or the classic, “Waiter, there's a fly in my soup.” Also, have you tried credit card fraud? JT: You might need to
work on your FOMO and also get better at picking and choosing when to join your friends. Everyone would love to make it to everything, but that’s not real life.
MY FRIENDS WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE TO PLAN THINGS. SOMETIMES IT’S SO LATE THAT BY THE TIME THEY GET IT TOGETHER, I’VE ALREADY CALLED IT A NIGHT. ARE MY FRIENDS TRYING TO AVOID ME? JR: What qualifies as “too
late”? If you’re going to bed at 8 p.m. it’s your fault for being a lame-o. JW: No, your friends are just rudderless clowns. Just start keeping track of their late planning, and at the end of the month send them an invoice with a bunch of nights/weekends emergency scheduling charges. After all, if a plumber can do it, why couldn’t a friend? JT: Maybe try taking the reins and planning the next event. That way you can see how they plan and also show an interest in helping. Also, then you’re guaranteed to be there.
MY COWORKER COMES BY TO TALK TO ME TOO MUCH AT MY DESK, AND IT’S AFFECTING MY WORKLOAD. I NEED SPACE, BUT I DON’T WANT TO SEEM UNFRIENDLY. JR: Find a podcast they hate. Then, when they come by and you have headphones in, start a conversation about said podcast and try to bond with them over it. That should keep them away.
