LETTER FROM THE TEAM: Yany Avelar

I don’t think it’s a secret that I’m slightly obsessed with “tiny living.” I love the idea of minimizing and simplifying my life and living quarters. So when I found out we would be featuring a recently renovated camper, I straggled along to get my tiny f ix. Seeing how Jocelyn and Quinten Johnson were able to convert a small

Tyson Schultz ACCOUNT MANAGER Taylor Hanson PUBLISHING COPY EDITOR

camper into a clean and minimal living space was #goals. Everything was so well thought out, no space was wasted, and the aesthetic was straight from Pinterest. Furthermore, not once did I feel cramped or claustrophobic, which I’m guessing was top of mind with three kids. Check out their camper on page 40!

I was pumped to check out Great Shots in Sioux Falls, and was even more excited when I found out they had a talented food and beverage team to boot. I’m going back for the Braised Beef Tortellini. See more menu items on page 18.

Alana and I had the opportunity to stop by Artisan Concrete Concepts in Volga. Let me tell you, they have the cutest concrete products you will ever see! They have everything from flowerpots to countertops, and I left the shoot with a planter for my house. See inside their space on page 84.

I was excited to get the opportunity to shoot the home of the Kruegers in Pierre, which was nothing short of epic. It’s on a marina, has a basketball court, and also has a batting cage. I don’t want to spread rumors, but I’m pretty sure I saw their grade school-age son do a windmill dunk on the full-sized basket.

Tyson Schultz

As someone who was originally an interior designer, the Home Issue is something I loved front to back. I really enjoyed the Krueger home (Waterfront Warmth), with their modern, yet very warm and comforting feel throughout the space. Check out their house on page 72.

GREAT SHOTS HOSTED VIEWING PARTIES FOR EPISODES OF THE BACHELOR IN ITS CHAMPION ROOM, AND EVERY ATTENDEE RECEIVED A ROSE.

“We’re more than just hot dogs and chicken strips and burgers,” said executive chef Thomas Carland. “People get that concept, and we have great options for that, but on top of that we have elevated menu items, as well.” The full-service restaurant that “fuels your fun” has a lot of items made from scratch, including the marinara in pizzas, like the Buffalo Chicken. This has mozzarella, buffalo sauce, roasted chicken, and blue cheese crumbles. “It’s definitely one of our top two sellers here,” said Carland. “We make our own buffalo chicken dip with roasted chicken, cream cheese, and homemade hot sauce.”

He continued, “We’re mainly a scratch menu here. The team roasts all of the braised beef in house, we smoke our own meats, we grind our corn beef. The prime rib is also done in house.” Speaking of braised beef, the chef says his favorite dish is the Braised Beef Tortellini. This includes braised beef, garlic, portabella, caramelized onion, and marsala cream sauce. “The braised beef is like a nine-hour cook for us,” said Carland. “It’s comfort-style cooking, yet a little upscale.” Great Shots is also very adamant of using local products when they can.

“We get some honey right here in Beresford,” noted Carland. A prime example is the Sandtrap, which is wonton chips tossed in cinnamon and sugar, sides of chocolate, caramel, cream cheese frosting, and Dahlberg Farms honey. Another popular item is the SoCal Burger. This dish has guacamole, bacon, jalapeños, sriracha honey, and charred tomato jam. Alongside the regular dining menu is the catering side of things. Director of food and beverage Sara Meyer says the chefs get creative, like with the charcuterie boards.

“We have a ton of happy hours, luncheons, and evening parties that utilize rooms and bays in our facility,” said Meyer. “We had a 70-yearold’s birthday party and a 4-year-old’s birthday party on the same day, we’ve had bachelor and bachelorette parties, surprise parties, private viewing parties, tons of meetings…” And with those events come a slew of themed and non-themed beverages, like the Champion Match Margarita. This is a top shelf margarita with Casamigos Blanco Tequila, served with a salted rim. Looking into spring and beyond, the busy crew is ready for continued volume.

“When we make a charcuterie board, no two boards look the same,” she said. “It’s what we have brought in and literally is the mastermind of our sous chef. It’s whatever they’re feeling.”

“Sioux Falls, from what I’ve seen and felt, has grasped at the concept of Great Shots,” said Carland. “It’s good to see your neighbors and people you see around local businesses working and then you see their familiar faces here.”

Meyer says Great Shots constantly is hosting events in rooms like the Champions Club and other unique setups.

or years I’ve heard people (including myself) complain that all Sioux Falls really needed was a solid Thai restaurant. I have driven all the way to Box Elder to eat at Baan Thai, but I needed my fix more often (if you haven’t been, get there). 230 S. PHILLIPS AVE., SIOUX FALLS

Then it was announced last fall that it was finally happening. Pho Thai moved into Shriver Square where it took over the former Cookie Jar location (Cookie Jar renovated and moved into the former Downtown Sioux Falls, Inc. office across the hall). The sit-down restaurant serves traditional Thai and Vietnamese dishes, and we couldn’t wait to get in and see what they had to offer. It took some persistence and calls, but 605 multimedia designer Yany Avelar and I got in for a late lunch on a Tuesday. We were greeted by the manager, who gave us a corner booth in the intimate and impressive space. All of the windows had ornate cutout décor, which was a cool element, but it caused shadows for the photography portion of the review (alert the Instagram-taking connoisseurs). It really didn’t feel like we were in Shriver Square, and it gave me vibes that I could have a discreet meeting there.

FOOD + DRINK

Right away we were brought Thai Tea, and the manager emphasized that “it’s a fresh brew.” The colors were mesmerizing, and I mixed the concoction up, which created an even more eye-catching display. I myself am not a tea person, and I loved it. Like, I kept drinking it and didn’t just do a courtesy sip.

“I do love how aggressive they are with their playlist,” said Yany as a server brought us Seafood Fried Rice.

“This is so creamy, but not too sweet that it ruins your appetite or upsets your stomach,” I mentioned to Yany.

“I’m pretty sure this is calamari,” she said.

Busy taking images of her tea, she wrapped up and sat down to give it a whirl. Several positive noises came from her direction, and she commented, “It’s throwing me off because it tastes like creamy iced tea, and I really like it.” As we shared this moment, mouths on straws, Wiz Khalifa’s See You Again ft. Charlie Puth blasted over the speakers. This followed Shawn Mendes, One Direction, and Ariana Grande.

28 |

I was super pumped that it had scallops, along with shrimp. Then Yany discovered tentacles.

She was correct. Here’s my deal, I ate one, and I’ve had calamari before. I don’t hate it. And that’s all I’ll say on that. Yany went to town and ate many calamari. Then came out the Shrimp Pad Thai with shrimp, vegetables, and “special sauce.” At the same time, they set down the Tom Yum, which was “seafood of the day” (patrons can order this or chicken) and was described as “hot and sour soup flavors with spices and herbs.”

“THIS IS LIKE FOR A FAMILY OF FOUR.” - Yany on portions

We let the Pho Thai team pick our dishes, and we were kind of bummed that we didn’t get a little more range (the menu is pretty eclectic) and that it was all seafood. “I think we have half of the sea on our table,” said Yany, as she looked at the spread. The Shrimp Pad Thai was delicious, and it was what you would hope to get and expect at a Thai restaurant. The Tom Yum was a soup that neither of us were ready for. Yany took the first bite and said, “The flavor reminds me of black licorice.”

I took a bite and agreed. The soup was compiled of giant chunks of ingredients that were a little hard to fit into my tiny mouth, and I swear the pieces of tomato were a fourth of a tomato. It was not our cup of tea, but speaking of tea, I drank more of mine.

BOTTOM LINE: It’s so exciting there is a place to get Thai and Vietnamese downtown. It’s also exciting that it has tea I now crave. As I mentioned, there are a lot of items that we didn’t get to try, so I’m definitely going back to sample more of what Pho Thai has to offer. Also, I hope they keep up that amazing background music. Everything playing was a banger, and also made me miss Paul Walker.

Dessert suddenly appeared. It was like a delicious strawberry shortcake with Jell-O. The sprinkles topped off the experience before we headed back to work.+

I really think they did a great job with the renovation of the space. Cookie Jar’s former layout was open in Shriver Square, and Pho Thai closed it off to make it more private, which I liked. I also appreciated the décor, and we both lost it at how cute the spice rack display was (see photo on page 28).

Most items were under $15, which was a steal for the portion sizes. Just the fried rice alone could have fed two to three people.

It was very delicious. I probably wouldn’t choose the Tom Yum again, but as we tasted it I could think of a handful of people who would have raved about it. I’m going back for the tea, and I’m probably going to order the fried rice with scallops again as I dabble with other offerings.

When I was in Europe in Januar y with USF students, I had the pleasure of visiting the Tate Modern in London and the Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin, both of which have tremendous collections of abstract master works that greatly inspired me to begin this body of work.

Students at USF have taught me… to never grow old and to keep on learning and exploring.

Local artists I currently love are… Joe Schaeffer and R ick Johns are both rocking the art scene here. Joe has an incredible gestural approach to painting, and Rick ’s work is always f illed with incredible mark making, color, and texture. I love both of them.

One of my favorite pieces of local art in my personal collection are… I have always loved the

tall, narrow piece at Parker’s Bistro in the main dining room which is part of the Ode to a Nightingale series inspired by John Keats’s poem, as well as the coming and goings of yellow warblers at Blood Run.

How I’m handling the coronavirus crisis is… taking long walks (or snowshoeing) and spending more time

in the studio. I’m actually moving my off ice to my studio for as long as I can. Since our courses are all online for a few weeks, I can go back and forth bet ween painting and checking in on my online courses.

When I’m not working on art, you can find me… during warm weather, either in the Butterf ly

Meditation Garden at USF or my own garden at home or walking/snowshoeing along the Big Siou x R iver, or riding my bicycle around downtown.

A moment I’ll never forget in my career is… when I got the phone call from New American Paintings that I had been chosen as one of 20 artists out of over 600 from around the U.S. to be featured in the 2000 edition of New American Paintings.

Something that might surprise people about me is… I grew up in southern Arkansas hunting and f ishing almost ever y day. I was one of the top skeet shooters in my age group when I was 10 years old.

Something I’m doing with art right now that I’m excited about is… ex ploring encaustic pa inting. It

Having previously owned a smaller (and older) camper, the two decided to take their Instagram inspiration to the entirety of their new purchase, set on making something that would work for them and their three daughters. “We started ripping stuff out of the camper the same day we bought it,” said Jocelyn. “I was eight months pregnant, so we really wanted to get a head start on the renovations.” The restoration began with removing most of the built-in cabinets in the master bedroom and the main living space. The Johnsons also tore out the short queen bed that is native to most campers in order to comfortably fit Quinten’s height. “My husband is very tall,” Jocelyn laughed. “Like, six foot, six inches.” Now a blank canvas, the Johnsons built a regular queen bed frame with storage underneath in an effort to maximize the limited square footage. Instead of keeping the wallpaper that Jocelyn said is common for campers, she painted all of the interior white, accenting the one master bedroom wall with a black stencil. “I think a lot of people would think doing black and white would be a bad idea in a camper because it would get dirty. But if I can see the dirt, I can clean it,” said Jocelyn. “Honestly, I just love a neutral palette, that way I can switch up the accent colors when I get sick of the current ones.” Continuing with the black and white color scheme, the Johnsons painted the kitchen cabinets black, replaced the floors with peeland-stick flooring, and even installed butcher block in place of the countertops. Small (and sometimes challenging) details like these are what Jocelyn says make her camper feel like an extension of their home. “I love this kitchen. We decided to use subway tile wallpaper to get a more sophisticated look,” said Jocelyn. “Once Quinten installed the butcher block, the kitchen felt like something you would find in an actual home.”

Walking toward the back of the camper where their daughters sleep, the Johnsons explained how they turned a typical camper living/sleeping space into a fully functioning family room. “Most campers have a dinette that folds out, as well as a fold-down bed, but since we had the bunk beds, we didn’t need it,” said Jocelyn. “We replaced the dinette and jackknife sofa with a couch and skinny table to give us more room and storage.” Having only painted in the bathroom, the last major renovation came when the Johnsons needed a room for their two older girls, Rhetta and Hadley.

46 |

“We thought bunk beds would be a fun addition for them,” said Jocelyn. “Unfortunately there was some water damage, which we have found is common in cheaper campers. Once Quinten rebuilt that portion of the wall, we covered it in shiplap and now it’s one of our favorite spots.” With a completed camper, three girls, and a need for summer adventures, the Johnsons spent the summer of 2019 traveling in their newly refurbished home on wheels, ready to camp and explore. “The best part of having this camper is it feels like home.”+

Hang Out With

Curt Johnson

Curt Johnson has worked at Showplace Cabinetry for more than 15 years. The sales designer of the 100-percent employee-owned cabinet brand has helped clients come up with their dream scenarios daily, and Johnson has also taken his passion for home projects into his 1982 two-story in southeastern Sioux Falls. 605 chatted with him on working in the showroom, working at home, and what he’s doing when he’s not renovating a room. 48 |

LIFESTYLE

Showing His Work

Showplace primarily works with remodels, and we also get referrals from contractors and interior designers, too. There’s a large-screen monitor, and I’m typically sitting with clients at the island desk and drawing out plans. They want to see what it looks like, if they want the fridge here or there, and then I can just pop things up so they can visualize why they like or dislike something. It really builds the relationship with them and gives them so much say, which I also appreciate. And I’m super honest with them, too.

Remodels and Home Projects

This is our third home, and we did a lot of work to it. It took three months, and we hammered it out. We didn’t live in it, we lived with the in-laws because our house down the block sold right away, which was a good thing, and we didn’t want to live through the mess. The last two houses we did room by room. I guess that’s my hobby. I don’t bowl, hunt, or fish. I love a house project. Most people think nothing is worse than having to paint, but you’re still home with your family (wife Anna, daughters Riley and Ellie), and it’s still alone time since they avoid you because they don’t want to help.

Hosts with the Most

We love to host a lot. Our friends come over and we hang out on the deck in the backyard when it’s nice out, or sit by the firepit, or play Hammerschlagen. Hammerschlagen involves a [tree] stump, and you take a nail and tap it in there and each person gets one hit at it. The first one to finish the nail all the way wins. And, of course, you drink beers in between.

Remotely Working

Now with the pandemic, I’m working from home more often, obviously. I oddly find I get a lot more work done. The showroom is great, but I tend to gab a little bit with my coworkers and clients. My desk is an old display from the showroom. The room gets a lot of nice light and is peaceful.

Commitment to Fitness

I go to the Avera McKennan Fitness Center five to seven days a week. As of today, I’m down 43 pounds since January last year. I really enjoy it. This is all thanks to my wife and her support, my really good buddy, Dan Lunder, and the fitness staff. Also, it’s right down the street, which is amazing. It’s the driving force for when the house projects are done; it’s something to do and it’s fun.

Volley Around

We started a co-ed volleyball team for the heck of it last year. It’s all old neighborhood couples. It’s a nice summertime thing to do.

On the Trail

Dan Lunder and I also do the loop of the bike trails all of the time. We challenge each other, and that’s the motivation. I tried to bike with the wife and kids, but they’re not at our pace.

Working on His Game

I started golfing last year. We’ve done a lot of GreatLIFE courses and frequent the town parks like in Hartford, Madison, and Beresford. I’m going to start taking lessons. I just love being outside, and it’s good, clean fun. I’ve realized it’s definitely a lifelong sport that takes a lot to master. My wife and I do it together and are going to try to get more golf in this summer.

Going Home

We love going back to my hometown of Madison to visit the family farm. My dad is 93 and my mom is in her 70s, and they moved to town a few years ago. My little brother and his wife took over the family farm five or six years ago. We almost bought a lake cabin last year and it didn’t work out, which is kind of a good thing because it flooded this last fall. But we have some friends with a cabin up there and we know a lot of people. It’s nice running into old friends there. My wife is from Sioux Falls, so there, it’s another group of friends and also family stuff.

riving up to Maren and Max Jensens’ home, it was immediately evident that the corner lot-situated house was teeming with warm and welcoming vibes. Having the front door and layered eaves on one side and the garage door on the other was a feature that was important to the Jensens from the start. “We saw the layout online and we liked that you couldn’t see the garage when you pulled up to the house,” said Maren. “And coming from a 1931 home, the openness of the blueprints was a refreshing change of pace.”

Sanford Health Full Time

If the floorplan wasn’t a big enough sell, the Jensens saw the school district and were convinced they had found their newest home.

The (creative) pair both work for Sanford. Max is a senior photo and video specialist, and Maren is marketing business partner for Sanford Women’s and Children’s.

“While we wanted to stay in Sioux Falls, we are obsessed with the Brandon school district,” said Maren. “So when we saw where the house was located, we were sold.”

Made to Order With a predetermined layout, the Jensens took pride in customizing everything else in the home, Showplace Cabinetry cabinets to accent walls, making sure their style and practicality was taken into account at every step of the process. “We got to pick the kitchen cabinet color, the island color, the flooring, and all of the finishes,” said Maren. “All of the details were ours to own.” Such details include 100 percent waterproof luxury vinyl floors and traditional cabinetry, two things that allowed Maren to keep things aesthetically pleasing and pragmatic. “Our kids are 7 and 3, so having something that was completely waterproof was a must,” said Maren. “The original plan had open shelves, but as much as we love to entertain, we didn’t want everyone to see all of our stuff, so we added doors.” T H E H O M E I S S U E april 2020

Let It Shine Sharing the space with the kitchen and dining room is the living room, which sits between the master bedroom and the kids’ bedrooms. “This space is everything we need for entertaining. There is a ton of seating and nothing blocking a conversation from happening between the kitchen, the dining room, and the living room,” said Maren. With one wall almost completely comprised of windows on one side and floor-to-ceiling white built-ins on the other, Maren says the natural light and custom storage make this room a family favorite. “I leave the windows open as long as possible because I just love the way natural light makes people feel,” said Maren. “As far as the built-ins on either side of the fireplace, they were all us. Open floor plans often call for a compromise in storage, and we realized we didn’t have anywhere for our board games, coloring supplies, and DVDs.”

“THIS WAS ACTUALLY MY DRESSER GROWING UP, SO WHEN I FOUND OUT I WAS HAVING A GIRL, I ASKED MY MOM IF I COULD STEAL IT,” SAID MAREN.

The Power of Play The first bedroom we saw was 3-year-old Blakely’s. Adorned in dainty flowers and sectioned into play areas, Maren says she wanted to make sure her daughter’s room facilitated play without abandoning the home’s design. “We wanted to make it super practical by adding storage so that things could be put away, but I want them to feel empowered to play in their room, too,” said Maren. “We also decided to add an accent wall in both rooms, just to add some depth and color.” In addition to the book and the kitchen areas, Maren also pointed out an antique dresser that holds more than just clothes. “This was actually my dresser growing up, so when I found out I was having a girl, I asked my mom if I could steal it,” said Maren.

Big and Bold Seven-year-old Carsten’s room is bolder, with a deep navy accent wall and pops of orange. “I wanted it to look masculine, yet not compromise on the look because we have a long-term plan for his room,” said Maren. “We have this really big wooden map from our 1931 house that we are going to hang above his bed.” The outdoorsy feel extends to all corners of the room with nods to South Dakota, Mount Rushmore, and the Black Hills. “We want to make things easy for him to play and spend time in his ‘boy room’ without making it so childish that he can’t grow into it,” said Maren.

Off The Grid The master bedroom is diagonal from the other two bedrooms, giving the Jensens a quiet and calming space for rejuvenation and rest. “I decided to keep things really simple in here because I love the bedspread so much, I wanted that to stand out,” said Maren. Behind the bed itself is a grid wall that Jensen said added just enough to the room to keep things interesting, without being overwhelming. “We needed a statement, but nothing dramatic, so we did the grid wall and kept it City Loft by Sherwin Williams, the same color as the rest of the house,” said Maren.

Papa Gregg’s Room When the Jensens were discussing moving, they knew they needed at least four bedrooms that were completely finished on account of Maren’s father being a frequent visitor. “This loft space was part of the original plan, which makes the front of the house look so fun,” said Maren. “So until we finish the basement later this year, the space works great as Papa Gregg’s room.” Once Papa Gregg has his own space downstairs, the upstairs area will act as a quiet workspace for the couple’s full and part time jobs. “All of the blog stuff will be up here and I’m already using this space for my try-on sessions,” said Maren. “When Max inevitably has freelance video projects, this will be a nice quiet space for us to work.”+

hrow pillows have never been known for their comfort or versatility, but a local specialty store is out to change people’s perceptions of the popular décor item. Sisters-in-law Sarah and Jill Storm were shopping for home décor together when the idea for their business came about. Sarah knew what she was looking for—highquality, comfortable, and stylish throw pillows—but nothing was living up to her expectations. As a creative entrepreneur and owner of her own photography business, the idea of launching a company to solve her problem came naturally to Sarah. “I’ve always been sort of entrepreneurial, and I’m always thinking of new businesses to start so I thought, ‘We could just make this ourselves,’ and a new business was born,” she said.

So, in 2015, Sarah’s entrepreneurial spirit and Jill’s talent for sewing came together with the launch of Harmony House, an online retailer for specialty pillows. They started out slow, offering just a few designs, but the collection has grown substantially since then. The shop is highly versatile because the decorative covers are sold separately from the actual pillows. Currently, Harmony House offers five different sizes of its comfortable down-alternative pillow inserts, or customers can use pillows they already have. Sarah and Jill make a point to source fabrics that are strong enough to withstand the wear and tear that comes with a house full of kids and pets. Plus, each Harmony House pillow cover is hand-sewn by Jill or one of the company’s other two makers—one out of Sioux Falls and the other a remote worker in New York.

T H E H O M E I S S U E april 2020

“We’re making it all ourselves so we’re there from the start, ordering the fabric, cutting it, and doing all the technical construction,” said Jill. “We’re very detail oriented.” Read: these aren’t your mother’s throw pillows—the ones some scolded for actually, you know, using. Harmony House pillows are meant to be snuggled, napped on, or even brought to a pillow fight. “We’re both boy moms, so we try to make them durable,” said Sarah. “We don’t pick fabrics that will be f limsy or wear down, and most of them are washable. We keep in mind that if we can’t put it in our house, most people can’t, and we want our customers to really use our product.”

68 |

This doesn’t mean the finished products aren’t stylish enough for an Instagram feed. (In fact, the business really began to take off nationally after a few social media influencers posted photos featuring the pillows.) Jill and Sarah describe their style as classic, contemporary, and cozy. Simple designs and neutral tones allow customers to keep their pillows even as their personal style evolves over time. “We keep things really neutral, not because we don’t like color but because we want it to fit in any room,” said Sarah. “Our style could read modern, but it could also be traditional depending on what you pair it with.”

Fact: Harmony House’s newest Designer Collection features pillows named after its owners’ grandparents: Willa, Irene, Arthur, and Elsie.

Harmony House’s newest collection features two prints made with authentic African mud cloth, also known as bògòlanfini. Sourced from Mali, the fabric is made with handwoven cotton that is hand-printed and dyed using leaves, branches, and mud. The end result is a beautifully textured, yet durable material. So where does the textile magic happen? Sarah and Jill run the successful online store out of their Sioux Falls homes, which happen to be on the same street— Harmony Drive. Design, production, shipping, and all other aspects of the business are handled from home, but Harmony House’s products are available at boutique retailers nationwide. They began wholesaling in January 2019 and now have close to 90 retail partners across the country. “The wholesaling exploded unexpectedly, and all of last year felt like we were scrambling to keep up with orders, which was a really great problem to have,” said Sarah. In the future, Harmony House hopes to expand further into the home décor space, and they recently added poufs to their product lineup. “We have all kinds of ideas, and we’d love to venture into home goods, whether that’s making them ourselves or sourcing someone who can design and create them exclusively for us,” said Sarah. “We really like the small, handmade feel.” Stay tuned for the latest from Harmony House, as they continue to prove that comfort and style can walk hand in hand.

Tessa and Ryan Krueger of Krueger Contracting, Inc. in Fort Pierre are the definition of an active family. With son Brecken being involved in multiple different sports through T.F. Riggs High School, building a house with a view and a full indoor sport court just seemed right.

Pulling up to the Kruegers’ house, the black barn doors adjacent to the rest of the monochromatic home are hard to miss .Standing out against the backdrop of the water and trees, the family wanted to make sure it functioned as more than a style element. “Having a space to enjoy all of the sports that we love was really important to us,” said Ryan.

more. The Kruegers took everything they were passionate about and turned it into a space they could utilize as a family, as well as with friends. “We wanted to create a fun space where Brecken and his friends love to come hang out,” said Tessa. “The space also has a ping-pong table, bean bags, darts, you name it and they can play it.”

Moving on to the living area proved the black and white palette was applied throughout the entire home. “I really love a classic look, however black and white can become too formal, stark, and cold,” said Tessa. “That’s why we brought the wood beams in, to warm up the home and give it the casual and practical feel we’re looking for.”

Creating a line of sight between the kitchen and living room, the beams connect the home to the wooded area that can be seen from almost every window in the house. “The floor-to-ceiling windows that cover the north walls of the living and dining rooms overlook the canal water, with the wooded area in the background, and create a beautiful backdrop,” said Tessa.

Dubbed as the best room in the house, Brecken’s bedroom has views of the canal and woods to the north, and the Missouri River to both the east and the west. Concrete Concepts Volga artists build relationships using concrete.

The biggest obstacle to our business right now is people not knowing about us and what we can do.”

had Guthmiller isn’t your typical artist. Instead of creating pieces with paint and a brush or even clay and a wheel, Guthmiller uses concrete to bring to life anything from custom countertops and fireplaces to jewelry and even drink koozies. 84 |

ART + DESIGN

It all began six years ago when Guthmiller started experimenting with concrete out of his father-inlaw’s garage in the small town of Scotland. He quickly discovered his passion for the medium, outgrowing the space soon after. Now Guthmiller and his wife, Amber, headquarter out of their own building in Volga—giving their business, Artisan Concrete Concepts, a true home and retail presence in the state and the ability to expand across the country. “I just really enjoyed this life of making things and being a maker,” said Guthmiller. “I asked myself, ‘What do I want to do with the rest of my life?’ and ‘What do I love to do?’ and this is what came of that self-reflection.” Besides kitchen countertops, Guthmiller also specializes in bigger concrete pieces like fireplace surrounds (the stone design around a fireplace), vertical sculptures, and fire pits. Since the couple’s move to Volga in 2018, Amber has expanded Artisan Concrete’s product line by crafting smaller pieces out of concrete like succulent planters, necklaces, and signs. Approximately five to 10 new products are added annually to Artisan Concrete’s product line as the couple learns new techniques and comes up with different designs. “Concrete is one-of-a-kind, that’s the beauty of it,” said Guthmiller. “When people think of concrete, they don’t think of how we make it. It’s not a trend; we can make it look like wood, like glass—it’s a chameleon material.” Guthmiller says bringing his wife onboard was huge for Artisan Concrete after they transitioned to a physical storefront. To maintain a store in town, the duo had to expand their product line from high-dollar, large projects like kitchens and fireplaces to more boutique-style, ‘I-just-stoppedby-to-pick-up-a-birthday-present’ kinds of products. Artisan Concrete now has “something for everyday people,” said Guthmiller, including those wanting to spend under $20 for a lastminute gift. T H E H O M E I S S U E april 2020

“In a small town there are many different avenues for success,” said Guthmiller. “You can do the high-dollar products like we did exclusively, but we also wanted to reach those wanting more of a boutique feel in that retail space in Volga. That’s what I love about this craft—we’re unlimited in what we can create.” But the thing Guthmiller says he loves to create most isn’t a specific kind of product, but instead a concept: relationships. “I’m a relationship builder with concrete,” said Guthmiller. “I really want to build things that bring people together, that help them forget about their stresses in life.” That’s why projects like fire pits, drink koozies, and even concrete cornhole boards, are so special to Guthmiller and his team—they’re more than simply a job well done. Instead these types of products represent the intangible goal Artisan Concrete is trying to accomplish every time they say yes to another project: relationship building.

dream log cabin—from a 3-D painting made of concrete depicting the area surrounding the cabin to a waterfall installation in the yard that he’s still working on—and a tabletop that illustrates the history of a family’s past. These projects and more like them are what keep Guthmiller coming back to concrete day in and day out, dreaming up new ways to transform a material as old as the earth for each customer that chooses Artisan Concrete. “We’re just makers trying to make it in the world today,” said Guthmiller. “The core of our business is being able to put our customers personalities into the work we do.”

Don’t Touch That B y Ky le D et er ma n

Parents of older children will spend a lot of time telling you to enjoy the months before your little one is on the move, because then, “it’s all over.”

I remember being on maternity leave and staring at Sloan, bored out of my gourd because even though she was the most beautiful and amazing baby, I wanted to do crafts, go to the park, and watch her do things. Much to my delight, those moments of discovery and excitement came in the blink of an eye, which I have learned to do scarcely. “Don’t blink,” they say, because they grow up so fast.

No, don’t blink because that’s when tiny humans climb bookcases, touch outlets, and attempt to fly.

What I’ve Learned

There are entire books, websites, and podcasts on the best ways to babyproof your home. And honestly, they all offer something educational and practical. Unfortunately, sitting down and reading 12 different books isn’t always in the cards for new parents.

E

Even if you don’t need everything right away, buying babyproofing gear in bulk will save you time and money.

E

Don’t forget about chords connecting lamps, TVs, etc. Anchoring them to the wall or baseboard will omit a strangulation risk.

The one thing I wish someone would’ve told me is that you don’t have to babyproof before your baby is born. They can’t move yet, so worrying about door handle covers and cabinet locks doesn’t have to be on the top of your priority list.

E

Babyproofing doesn’t stop outside of the home. It’s a good idea to put gates on decks and keep power tools off the ground.

There is a lot of pressure to have your house perfectly proofed for your new bundle of joy. And while you should take all of the safety precautions you can, keeping your baby safe in and out of the home takes more than corner guards and bath spout covers.

605MAGAZINE.COM

There is a level of awareness from you and your partner that is necessary when it comes to the well-being of your little one. Take the time to observe where in the house they like to be, like where they eat, where you sleep, and where their toys are. It’s natural for people to gravitate to places that bring them joy, and toddlers are no exception. Is their playroom upstairs? If so, you may want to invest in a heavy-duty baby gate. Are they like Sloan and are obsessed with snacks? Keeping everything on the counters out of their reach and installing cabinet locks may be more important than installing a window guard on a window they can’t reach. I could go on and tell you about my favorite products and most effective tricks and tips, but let’s get real. Accidents happen and there will come a time that all of the babyproofing in the world won’t prevent them.

E The Montessori Toddler

Which brings me to the things in your home that you can’t babyproof, like furniture, walls, and hardwood floors. Sloan has taken more than one tumble off of the couch-falls that happened with Reid and I right next to her. She cried, I cried, and Reid offered us consolation and love. In that same regard, she has also run into her fair share of walls because toddlers toddle, and sometimes that leads to an unwelcome encounter with hard surfaces. As far as hardwood floors go, think of a baby deer on ice, and that’s what you get when your little one has non-grip socks on. Each family takes a different approach to keeping their children safe and the main thing to remember is just that.

When she began walking and becoming more curious, we made sure that all of the corners at head level were covered to lessen the impact on her little noggin. Now, with the higher temperatures and melting snow, we are installing baby locks on our doorknobs because whenever we say the “O-word” (outside) she makes a mad dash to the door. I’ve learned a lot in the last year-and-a-half of being a parent, and the one thing I’m still struggling with is the fact that no matter what I do, I can’t keep her safe 100 percent of the time. However, I can keep her environment safe, teach her how to keep herself safe, and accept that toddlers are clumsy and “bonks happen.”+

With Sloan, Reid and I decided to baby-proof our house on a day-to-day basis. Once she learned how to crawl, we covered all of our accessible outlets and put up baby gates at the top and bottom of our staircase.

Andrea Van Essen 605 PROFILE

“Certainly for some, marketing is a place where budgets can be tightened, but the people I really want to work with understand the power of communication and storytelling for their brand and are willing to invest in it.”

very business is made of people, and every person has a story. Writing freelancer Andrea Van Essen helps tell those stories with her business, from founders to CEOs to assembly line workers to chefs. Van Essen works full time crafting pieces like press releases, blog posts, website copy, articles, e-newsletters, and more, and gave 605 a look into her (remote) life.

5 QUESTIONS W I T H VA N E S S E N

Andrea Van Essen is on 605’s freelance team.

WHAT WAS ONE OF YOUR FAVORITE WRITING PROJECTS AND WHY?

WHAT SOUTH DAKOTA RESTAURANT ARE YOU THE MOST EXCITED TO BE IN ONCE THIS IS ALL OVER?

When you’re writing something that requires an interview, it’s always going to be 10 times better if you can do that interview in person. I’ve had so many fun opportunities to meet and talk to people that I never would have had in day-today life because of my work. A particularly fun one was for the October issue of 605 a couple years back. The story was on the haunted Hotel Alex Johnson, and I happened to be out in Rapid City, so I was able to do my interview with the manager in person. He gave me a tour of all the spookiest spots in the old building, including the creepy basement with cement staircases leading nowhere. Memorable interviews make the writing process so much easier and more enjoyable.

Queen City Bakery is my favorite place in town, whether I’m working or just hanging out, so I’ll be happiest when I can get back there. They’re still doing carry-out, though, so go support them!

WHAT ARE YOUR TOP TIPS FOR WORKING OUT OF AN OFFICE?

WHAT IS SOMETHING SOCIAL DISTANCING HAS TAUGHT YOU?

I definitely love the freedom of running my own business, but I quickly realized that I wasn’t going to be successful if I didn’t develop some sort of routine or schedule for myself. I don’t do the same thing every day, but I do make it a priority to plan every day the night before (on paper), from when I’m going to work out at Barre3, to lunch at home with my husband, Mason, to when I’m going to write at home and when I’m going to work at a coffee shop.

Mostly just that I have a lot to be grateful for. My husband is my best friend, and hanging out with him 24/7 is honestly the ideal situation (even if it’d be nice to get out to our favorite restaurants or bars with friends for a change). And I’m also incredibly grateful for our cozy home. We live in the upstairs apartment of an old Victorian house in All Saints, and the owners did a beautiful job of restoring it.

WHAT IS A HOBBY YOU ENJOY? We rented a plot in one of Sioux Falls’ community gardens last summer on the suggestion of a friend, and we honestly had pretty low expectations, but it was the highlight of our summer. We’ve been so excited to get back to it this year, and we have a totally nerdy spreadsheet of all the vegetables we want to try and how it’s going to be organized.
