One of my favorite parts of publishing 605 is that sometimes we find stories as we capture stories. A prime example was when we drove through Spearfish Canyon, following GPS until connection was lost, and our jaws dropped as we pulled up to artist Scott Simpson’s house (more on page 69). Connected to his home was an 1890’s homestead, where his parents reside. “You have to see this,” he said. And we did, and decided to do a separate feature on the original cabin (page 28).

LE AD M U LTIMEDIA DES IG NER I’ve personally spent countless dollars and have burnt through several punch cards at Last Stop trying to chase down the nostalgic video games of my childhood, so it was an honor to showcase them this month (see page 48). As I round the corner on two months with 605 Magazine, I’m excited to find my footing as the designer of a publication that has been catching my eye for years. However, if you catch any typos, I will refer you to our primary copywriter, John Snyder. A huge credit is owed to the rest of the team, our interns, and former multimedia designer, Yany Avelar. You have all left a significant impact on how I design, how I work, and how many trips I take to Bread & Circus Sandwich Kitchen.

“Our style of cooking is casual, but upscale American,” said general manager Vinnie Olson. “We outsource some of our menu items to Minneapolis to keep up with the trends of bigger cities, but still keeping it simple enough for the location that we’re at.” The restaurant has added to its menu for the summer. A couple of highlights include new entrées, burgers, and shareables. Olson says this is the first big menu change in the nearly four years since he has been with the restaurant, and he hopes to start updating it more frequently.

One of the newest items available is the Chipotle Maple Salmon Bowl, which has Atlantic salmon with a chipotle maple glaze on it, served over a bed of rice with sweet potatoes, red onions, and wilted spinach, topped with a lime crème drizzle, and housemade guacamole. Federally Insured by NCUA

“By keeping a bar atmosphere, we do quite a bit of shareables,” said Olson. “Our menu consists of a lot of appetizers.” Tinners is known locally for its rendition of a South Dakota favorite, chislic. “We do both Beef and Lamb Chislic, cut in house,” he said. “Everything we do we age and cut in house. We’re very proud of our chislic, and it’s definitely our No. 1 seller across the board.”
Olson says that the burgers are a close second. “My favorites are our burgers. Our burgers are double patties cooked on a flat top. We don’t charbroil our burgers, which isn’t common in a place this size,” he said. “We try to get a good crust on our burgers.” A staple burger on the menu is the Rise & Shine, which features a fried egg, American cheese, lettuce, and tomato on a brioche bun.

Cabin Canyon in the
by Dawn Geertsema
Nestled four miles into Spearfish Canyon right at the base of a steep cliff wall, a couple sits on the porch swing of a log cabin, listening to the trickling of a creek. Owners Pat and David Simpson have lived in many states, but today they find themselves enjoying every day in their 19th Century home.

Historic Homestead “We know that it’s one of the original homestake mine cabins that were built in the late 1800s,” said Pat.
Pat and David added another bedroom and bathroom, bringing the space to 1,100 square feet.
She says she and David bought the single-acre property in 2013, though the original land grant states that the property was first owned in 1893. And Pat speculates that the cabin was constructed in 1896.
“We didn’t do much at all to renovate the original cabin,” recalled Pat. “We just built on a bedroom and bath for us and bought things for the kitchen and the bathroom to have them clean and nice.”
Before they built on to the structure, the cabin had two bedrooms and one bathroom with a large clawfoot tub that Pat says may be original to the property.
Pat’s favorite place in the house is in front of the original stone fireplace with her husband.

Never Lonely Though it once stood alone, the cabin now is connected to a garage and a second house with the same square footage where one of their sons resides. Scott Simpson and his wife, Sheryl, help out with property chores (read more about Scott on page 68). “We get a lot of snow in the winter, and it would be a challenge for us to get out there if it wasn’t a multigenerational, shared property,” said Pat. “Scott and Sheryl help with the [snow] plowing.” In the past, it would have been hard to heat the cabin, but Pat says with their different heating stoves throughout, they manage it.

“I don’t know that it’s ever been a year-round cabin, but it is for us,” she said.

Patchwork Pieces Aside from the running water and electricity, the home highlights bring in the feel of the late 1800s and early 1900s. While Pat has many heirlooms from those time periods, some of her favorite possessions are her quilts. “Many of them were quilted by my grandmother,” she reminisced. “I see pieces of cloth in them that remind me of dresses that I had when I was little, my grandmother’s dresses, and my mother’s dresses. Parts of that same cloth went into quilts.” And even though she doesn’t make quilts herself, many aspects of the couple’s cabin are characteristic of the craft. Much like the way quilts bring different, unassociated fabrics into one cohesive piece, the interior of the cabin is made up of countless heirlooms. From Pat’s great-greatgrandparents’ bed frame to the dining room table and chairs, much of the furniture is authentic to the cabin’s time period, give or take a few years. “These are probably what you would call primitive pieces,” she laughed. “[My great grandparents] didn’t have much money at all.”
36 |
One of her oldest pieces endured a journey all the way from Arkansas. “I have a blanket chest that my great-great-grandparents brought from Arkansas on a covered wagon in 1852,” said Pat. Pat is also quite proud of their 1937 radio. “It’s the kind that people sat in front of to listen to Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Fireside Chats. And it still works,” she exclaimed. “We can pick up one station!” From the rusted metal roof to the original scuffed wood floors and wainscoting ceilings, the cabin is not only a home, but a time capsule of sorts. “Life isn’t like it was then because we have our modern conveniences” explained Pat. “But as far as stepping into the house, it feels like you step back in time.” +

I met owner Lawrence West of the food truck Watecha Bowl during a Downtown Sioux Falls First Friday live stream when I was a guest co-host for 605 Day on June 5 (if you have four hours to watch magic unfold, it’s on the DTSF Facebook page). After hearing his passion for his dishes and his culture, I knew I had to know more. And, you know, try all of the foods in the process. As it was designer Yany Avelar’s last week working for 605, I couldn’t let her leave without doing one more Try It. Our new multimedia designer, Jordan Cushman, came along for his first experience, while 605 O.G. Taylor Hanson also joined since she had never had an Indian Taco. You read that right. South Dakota born and raised Taylor Hanson had never had an Indian Taco.

Well, we decided this was the right time for her to have her first. The crew pulled up to Studio 1491 on Madison Street in Sioux Falls, which is also owned by Lawrence and where you can typically find the food truck. Studio 1491 specializes in custom and urban apparel, blankets, and beadwork, and they also recently launched Urban Nerd, which sells items like ‘90s nostalgia, pop culture memorabilia, jerseys, sneakers, and more. “I do a ton of things,” said Lawrence with a laugh as we sat at one of several seating options outside of the storefront. This particular section was a custom spray-painted table with vibrant colors with “Watecha Bowl” etched across it. He talked about how the menu was inspired by traditional Lakota cuisine, including his fry bread. “I’m hoping I can create a soft spot where [my culture and businesses] can all mesh by introducing people to the beadwork, the blankets, the music, the food, the fry bread,” said Lawrence. “Everybody likes [the fry bread]. I don’t think I’ve ever had a bad review.” The music he referenced was his previous role in the local hip-hop scene. “My initial background was in music,” he said. “I was really immersed into the music culture. I was one of the first hip hop artists in Sioux Falls, and we did a big push with that movement.” The (mobile) restaurant scene being his latest endeavor, Lawrence says it’s important that everything is made fresh daily.

“We source locally, we don’t use dyes, we don’t use any frozen, pre-made food,” he said. The 605 team got to see for ourselves with several menu options. As it’s a food truck, each dish is served in a foam to-go box, and we walked over with a pile of them to spread out onto our table to nosh. To welcome Taylor to South Dakota officially after 25-plus years, we tried the Indian Taco first. Lawrence said the meat is a mix of ground beef and buffalo and has mixed garlic and seven dry seasonings. It’s then placed onto fresh fry bread and is topped with lettuce, tomatoes, black olives, salsa, sour cream, and cheese. “This fry bread reminds me of funnel cake,” said Yany.

It did have that flavor and had a hint of sweetness. Also, he wasn’t kidding when he said it was fresh. Don’t dive in too fast, because it’s served hot and fresh out of the kitchen. And I mean that in the best way, because it shows just how each item is made the second you order it. Also, so fluffy. The Indian Taco was everything I imagined and more when I was daydreaming that Monday morning about our lunch outing. Watecha Bowl would be hard to stop by and get anything else if you’re an Indian Taco fan, because it’s fresh and delicious. “You could definitely share this,” said Taylor. And she was right. Maybe that’s why it’s called Watecha, which means “leftovers” in Lakota.

My primary goal is to bring awareness to the culture.” Next up was the Big Indian Burger. What I really liked about the eatery was that no two days were the same. Lawrence says the menu is always changing, whether it’s different dishes or a twist on dishes. For example, there is the Big Indian Burger, but some days it’s made with beef and some days it’s made with buffalo. That day was buffalo. This had fry bread, chopped lettuce, tomatoes, onions, pickles, and cheese. Jordan shared the same sentiment that the fry bread gave it that sweet twist. “The cheese with the fry bread mixes perfectly,” he said. “It’s like a sweet burger.” Speaking of fry bread, Lawrence also gave us a side of fry bread for us to dip in the Wojapi, which is a traditional Native American berry sauce. “You can drink it, you can eat it with a spoon, you can dip your fry bread into it,” he said. “It’s a very traditional dish. It’s probably one of the oldest dishes we serve.” Lawrence explained he mashes up berries, which vary every day depending on what he’s feeling like, and boils them with sugar until they get a thick consistency. That afternoon’s choice was blackberry. We dipped the fry bread into the sauce. And then the Indian Taco. And then the Fry Bread Cheese Curds (with buffalo milk mozzarella cheese), which was our side. The special sauce is definitely a tie with fry bread for the star of the show. Last, but not least, was the Powwow Lemonade. This also changes, but is a (large) lemonade with various fruits. We had traditional lemonade, which was killer. I walked up and told Lawrence that it’s like the lemonade you aim to have at a fair for an idyllic summer moment, and he nailed it.+
BOTTOM LINE: I am definitely going back to try more. The Watecha Bowl Facebook page is actually kind of addicting because the menu is always different (i.e. he served breakfast the other day) and the location does mix up pretty frequently. But also, that Indian Taco will be a monthly meal.

This is quite different as it’s a food truck. I will say a big piece of feedback the group had was that we loved the people watching. If you eat at the primary location, you’re on a corner and there’s quite a bit happening. Since it was close to the Fourth of July, we actually had a firework go off while we ate, which surprised (and terrified) us.
So much great food for reasonable prices. Each item could definitely be finished later on or shared.
So fresh you have to give it a minute to cool down, which is ideal. I would rather wait in anticipation for a few moments than not know if it’s made to order. It’s also nice to hear details about the ingredients, like the locally sourced beef and the fresh fruit for lemonade and wojapi.

WORKING HARD OR HARDLY WORKING
“Once you find somewhere like that, I think [people] understand how unique it is to find a job that you love going to,” said Ross. “It’s like working with family.” And just like with family, every time you stroll into the store, you can expect to see familiar faces. Of the 11 full-time employees, the most recent hire was in 2011, nine years ago. “A lot of us joke about how it’s ridiculous that we get paid to do this for a living, joking about having to find a real job,” laughed Ross. “It’s pretty addicting.”

After 25 years of owning and operating the two stores in Sioux Falls and, at times, locations in other towns, Brian Deutz says he’s thrilled with the staff he’s maintained. “That’s made my job really easy,” said Deutz. “It’s a fun way to make a living.”

“We’re kinda unique in the sense [that] the items that we have in one place are unique to just our store,” said Ross. “Nobody else has all of those things under one roof.” Though the inventory has been changing over the years, Ross loves to see how inventory cycles. While the newest systems, games, music, and movies release frequently, the crew at Last Stop has seen nostalgia resurface in several categories as well.
“
You could jump on your phone and listen to any song you’re thinking of right now. People jumped on how convenient that was, but then they also miss what it feels like to put a record on and take the time to listen to the album.”
-Corey Ross
From ‘90s Nintendo consoles to the PS4 and back again, they say fascinations change just as they have with vinyl records and CDs. And that is Ross’ favorite category of the store's merchandise: music. “It’s very rewarding to see people pick up an album and see the same smile on their face when they’re looking through the track list, remembering a song, how old they were when they first heard that song or who they were with or what was going on in their life,” expressed Ross. The paper sleeves that cover much of the stock at the store are covered in memories scrawled across them, said Deutz. Memories from a month ago and memories from over a decade ago.

STEPPING INTO LAST STOP
The day’s itinerary included Record Store Day releases, on-site food options, an ice cream truck, live music, and an array of vendors. According to Ross, Fernson Brewing Co. was even going to create a special beer for the occasion.
He says he enjoys helping people find the one special item that means something to them.
Back on April 18, Last Stop was gearing up for Record Store Day. On that same day, Deutz had a busy schedule planned for the company’s 25th anniversary.
“We had big plans,” said Deutz. “That was another casualty of COVID.” Record Store Day will now spread out its releases across three days—August 29, September 26, and October 24—but the 25th anniversary reschedule is yet to be determined. According to Ross, Last Stop has continued receiving support from the community throughout the pandemic.
56 |
“I think if I could tell anybody anything that hasn’t been in the store in a while or doesn’t know what we do, it’s just that they’d be surprised at what they can find in there,” said Ross.
“It’s always interesting to see how many new people we get in the store and to see what they come up with, the questions they ask, or what they end up looking for,” said Ross. And that’s what Ross lives for. Even still, he jokes, “Maybe one of these days, I’ll find a real job.”

JACOBS BREWHOUSE & GROCER by Molly Sperlich

“E
xpanding your tastebuds and refining your palate” is the primary goal of Jacobs Brewhouse & Grocer, a new restaurant and grocery store bringing a fresh take to Deadwood’s food and drink scene.
Jacobs Brewhouse is a destination for anyone looking for classic food and drink options with a twist. The concept was derived by owners Scott and Sharon Jacobs when they say they fell in love with the building, originally home to the J. Hattenbach & Bro. grocer in 1895. Olivia Jacobs-Chrisman, daughter of Scott and Sharon, says the family has always been inspired by the beauty of old buildings. Originally from San Diego, she says she enjoys the array of history in the Deadwood community and is excited the new business is becoming part of it. “Being able to give [the building] a facelift and bring back its beautiful characteristics was the most rewarding part for me,” she recalled.

Highlights include handmade railings, art from Scott Jacobs Gallery (also owned and run by the family), photography from Olivia, vintage guitars signed by world-renowned artists, and hand-painted murals. “It’s an artistic place where the vibe is energetic and welcoming, and we want everyone to feel at home when they’re here,” said Olivia. Scott says the goal of the restaurant’s offerings was to step outside of the box. “Our mission was to build a place that not only we love, but that other people would love and gravitate toward because it’s so different from any other menu,” he said.
60 |
Jacobs said his favorite menu item is the Ahi Tuna, which is sushi grade and is lightly seared on both sides with a slice of cucumber. The tuna is smeared with a homemade wasabi aioli that sits on top of a homemade slaw with a sweet soy glaze around the edge and a sriracha center. “It’s a beautiful plate that sells like crazy,” said Scott. “A lot of people that try it say it’s one of the best things they’ve ever eaten, which is a great thing to hear.” Olivia says they aim to take traditional items and elevate them with a unique twist, like the Lemon Chicken Quinoa Salad and the Rosemary Brie Apple Wedge.

In addition to the food, the craft cocktail list at the Brewhouse also has its own (fresh) twists. The Brewhouse uses homemade simple syrup, for example. A favorite concoction of Olivia is the Lavender Lover martini, which comes with edible flowers. “We’re taking that extra step to make sure people know we care about what we’re serving,” explained Olivia.

Along with the restaurant, patrons can find an artisanal grocery store connected to the space. “You aren’t going to be able to get your staples here, but for us we have all American-made food or European imports,” said Olivia. “It’s all small-batch.” The grocer sells fresh meats and cheeses made in Mitchell, as well as bison meat from farmers in the state. Additionally, there is also a fullservice bakery. All the artisanal breads and desserts for the restaurant are baked fresh every morning.

The atmosphere at the brewhouse focuses on refurbishing the building’s original features with a European influence. “My sister started painting a mural of southern France [in the grocer section], and the grocery store makes you feel like you are in an old European market,” said Olivia. The Jacobs family began renovations with a “sledgehammer party” to knock down walls and expose original windows. “For me as an artist it’s easier to start with a blank canvas, and that goes for buildings as well,” said Scott.

Olivia says they reused and repurposed elements like the old crates they sanded and stained for displays. The outdoor patio walls were built using antique bricks that were cut away to build archways connecting the restaurant to the bakery. An old elevator was updated into an interactive wine cellar presentation. “The history and the age of the building is proudly displayed. They’re not covered up, and buildings built long ago are still being used,” said Olivia. “To have that feel here I think really ties in with the original Deadwood.”

Creative by Dawn Geertsema
Scott Simpson FROM DANCIN’ MOON STUDIO IN HIS SPEARFISH CANYON HOME, SCOTT SIMPSON HAS RELEASED 27 ALBUMS SPANNING MORE THAN 10 DIFFERENT GENRES. BUT BEFORE SHIFTING FOCUS TO SONGWRITING, SIMPSON WAS AN EDUCATOR, HAVING TAUGHT BOTH HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE-LEVEL ENGLISH, AND WAS ALSO A PUBLISHED POET. SIMPSON’S COMPOSITIONS HAVE MADE APPEARANCES IN MANY EDUCATIONAL DOCUMENTARIES AND PROJECTS, LIKE “DEADEYE’S WILD WEST SHOW,” A BLACK HILLS MUSICAL. FOR THE LAST 12 YEARS, SIMPSON HAS ALSO PARTNERED WITH TECHNOLOGY & INNOVATION IN EDUCATION (TIE) AN ORGANIZATION THAT STRIVES TO BRING THE LATEST TECHNOLOGY TO SOUTH DAKOTA SCHOOLS.
C U LT U R E + E N T E R TA I N M E N T
Simpson says he most commonly plays an acoustic guitar, and he now has two albums played on an old guitar acquired from his wife, Sheryl’s, grandfather, Ozzie. For Sheryl, the guitar brings back many memories, and it lives on in Simpson’s album, Ozzie’s Guitar. After the heirloom guitar was damaged in a flood, Simpson repaired it. Now he’s releasing his newest album, Ozzie’s Guitar 20 Years Later, on August 1
I started songwriting…
as early as I can remember. The first song I wrote that I remember the words to is included in the middle of [a track titled] My First Song from my 2017 album, Refuge. It’s about being an aspiring songwriter in first grade, but I had a teacher who cared more about my penmanship than my new song.
My love of music started…
in church and maybe at camp. I grew up in a tradition that sang acapella in worship—no instruments. The great thing about that is you have to sing. You also have to learn how to hear and match pitch and find harmonies. My parents worked on a college campus, so I was really drawn to all those young college students sitting around with guitars, singing folk and singer-songwriter stuff back in the ‘70s: John Denver, James Taylor, Carly Simon, etc.
Fans of my music are looking for… stories. Or at least hints at stories, if not every detail.
I think people who like my music also have to like acoustic instrumentation. People who like my music also have to have a taste for shifting genres. I have often thought that, depending on your taste, on almost any of my albums you’ll find something you like, and probably something you hate.
My other accomplishments include… documentaries and educational films. TIE
has a great media team, and I’ve gotten to work on a number of film projects doing music, filming, and editing. One educational film, Teaching From Within, I wrote the script for. We went on the road and had teacher-actors (some, friends of mine) play different roles. It was tons of fun and has been used now for many years.

The most dif f icult part of songwriting for me is... turning it off. When I’m working on a song or an
album, whether it’s during the writing stage, recording, mixing, or mastering/ finalizing, I’m obsessive. You can ask my wife or my daughters. I listen to what I’m working on—rough mixes—over and over in the car. My daughters remember that from their earliest years on. My wife knows that in spite of the fact that I’m normally an early-to-bed kind of guy, when I’m working obsessively on music, I can’t sleep.
The album I’m most proud of is… the one
I’m finishing up—Ozzie’s Guitar 20 Years Later. It’s a little strange to have a brand-new album with not a single brand-new song on it… But that was the challenge of this album.
74 |
Something I’m doing right now that I’m excited about is… getting ready for my first
grandchild. My oldest daughter, Maegan, and her husband, Stephen, are having a little boy, Fox David Detlefs, in September. He’ll be our first grandchild, and we couldn’t be more excited. I’ve seen ultrasound pictures, but I’m ready to really meet this little guy!
My favorite part of my job is… making a
difference in the way people see the world and themselves. That’s what education is about. That’s also what music is about. When you experience something that’s moving, it shouldn’t be just interesting, it should be transformative. You should come away from any learning, art, or music experience changed.

I love to grab a bite or drink at… Common One thing I love about South Dakota Grounds coffeehouse. Their coffee’s the best, along with their tea, paninis, is... its combination of environments. I grew up in Nebraska on the Great and sandwiches. I’ve spent hours there with my Mac, some coffee, and a scone, mixing songs, uploading files to CD Baby, and fine-tuning an album. I probably should give them a cut from album proceeds, if I have any.
W hen I walk around Spearf ish Canyon… I love the places people know about: Roughlock
Falls Trail, Bridal Veil Falls, Devil’s Bathtub, 11th Hour Gulch, and Community Caves, but I have private places I like to go. Near where I live, there’s an old cabin site. I love to hike there with my wife and my three doggies, Abbey, Oscar, and Ellie. I imagine when it was new. I listen for the sounds of the hills: birds, wind, the creek not far off. No tourists. No trinket shops. No sales pitch. That’s the Black Hills.
Someone local who I admire is… Heath
Johnson, a fine singer, songwriter, and podcaster who is a friend and does an amazing job organizing and holding together the South Dakota Songwriters group. He’s a big supporter of original, local songs and songwriters.

Plains, and I love the Great Plains of South Dakota. My wife and I lived briefly in the Colorado Rockies, and I love the peaks and valleys of the Black Hills. I spent time working in New Mexico where the indigenous nations of the southwestern tribes live and pray and fill the air with music. And I love the indigenous elders across the Dakotas, among whom I do much of my work. I’ve learned so much from so many wise elders and been fed by many uncis (grandmothers), and I deeply appreciate the fact that they are as indigenous to this place as are the eagles, the prairie grass, the waters, the Badlands, and the bison. If you want to know who you are in this place, spend some time listening to them.
My favorite place to go for inspiration is… right at home. I’m a homebody. I love a quiet evening and some time to just strum a guitar for a bit. If I let myself toy with it, some words will come, and they’ll reshape the rhythm or the chord. It’ll suck me in.

“We feel like it’s a good business model to have people know that we’re always open,” said owner Ben Hanten. Aside from changes during the COVID-19 pandemic, the local staple is open 365 days a year.
The second floor is home to the speakeasy, The Copper Room, which Hanten says is a space for mixology and meetings. Open Wednesday through Saturday at 5 p.m., the space typically hosts events like dinner clubs, trivia nights, vinyl nights, comedy shows, and more.
Hanten said, “If it’s Christmas Day, if it’s the Fourth of July, we’re here. And we take pride in being open until 2 a.m. and being a place where people never have to guess if we’re open.” Ben’s Brewing, which just celebrated its 15th anniversary July 3, is a decently small operation, brewing out of a two-story 1880s building with a basement.
And on the main floor, the “high-end dive bar” welcomes sports fans with TVs playing anything from baseball to football to golf. Plastered on the wall and on coasters is the brewery motto: “Good people drink Ben’s beer.”
“We exist out of a really small budget, and so I think that we absolutely make the most of what we’ve got—the most of our space, the most of our time, the most of our staff,” he said
Peering into the future, Hanten says that he has recently secured more land and hopes to create a full-production brewery in the future.
Each of the three levels of the building is home to a different function. The basement houses a walk-in cooler as well as the five-barrel brewing operation, where they can produce about 150 gallons of beer.
He left off, “I would float out a goal of 2021, but we’ll see what happens the rest of this year.”+
“We just take that to mean that there are a lot of cool and interesting people who walk into this space,” said Hanten.

In the summers, a group of my friends and I do a sunset run down the Missouri River. We put our kayaks in at Oahe Dam and take [them] out at the causeway that leads out to La Framboise Island. The whole run is two to three hours and is usually filled with snark, stories, and lots of laughter. I play softball for a team called Bat Intentions, and we like to head to The Fieldhouse Sports & Spirits for a cold one to wash down the dust after our games. Their buffalo wings and bartenders are full of sass, their TVs are perfect for game night, and their live music lineup is everything you could ask for.
Brilliant Badlands
Growing up, my family would road trip across the country to visit every possible state, national, and provincial park we could see. Badlands National Park remains one of the most beautiful national parks I have ever seen. It’s stark, stunning, colorful, and awe-inspiring every single time I visit.
Starlight, Star Bright, Wander the Grasslands Tonight
Hiking, fishing, stargazing, and wildlife watching are the best ways to pass the time and enjoy some peace and quiet. To get away from it all, I love going to the Fort Pierre National Grassland. The stock dams are outstanding for panfish. The solitude is second to none. Though just a short distance from Pierre, the night skies are out of this world with very little light pollution, and the rolling hills and uninterrupted views are prime for wildlife watching and photography.

Prime Rib Over the River
Cattleman’s Club Steakhouse is an amazing steak joint out on Highway 34. The patio overlooks the Missouri River and rolling hills bordering the river valley. I always order the same dish when I head to Cattleman’s because it is the absolute best in town: Prime Rib with horseradish. Oh. My. God.
Harvest SD
Hiking the river breaks along Lake Oahe on a lazy fall afternoon, shooting my bow on the Oahe Downstream Archery Course, or watching the insane number of Canadian geese soar overhead as my friends and I hunker down to stay warm in the Lower Oahe Waterfowl Access Area goose pits, are all annual celebrations of how much I love the water, land, and wildlife in this state. My love of those resources drove me to develop the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks’ comprehensive learnto-hunt program named Harvest SD.

The Not-So-Terrible
Twos by Kyle Determan
There are a couple of things people don’t tell you about parenthood, my favorites being: morning sickness doesn’t only happen in the morning, and the “terrible twos” don’t always wait until 2. 88 |
Reid and I were never naive about this phase of Sloan’s development, but it is different. We made it through the four-month sleep regression, teething, starting solid foods, and a very brief “no, Mama” stage. But this... this is a whole other ballgame, my friends. It seems like overnight Sloan’s brain underwent a complete rewire and created, well, what’s a nice word for monster? Okay, so she isn’t that bad, but holy Hannah it is rough. The tantrums are amplified, the defiance is constant, and the calming tactics we used to rely so heavily on work as well as hand-feeding a shark.

Not only are things like throwing food, and winding up to hit Reid and me when she’s mad added to our daily routine, but things have disappeared in the chaos that is toddlerhood. Things like nice morning cuddle sessions and her fondness for reading an entire book without ripping the pages out have dissipated. Things that melted my heart and left me reeling at the thought of her growing up have seemingly evaporated into thin air. Now I find myself anxiously awaiting the next, less aggressive, chapter. Or, at least, I had been until this past weekend. We spent the weekend in Huron, for my grandfather’s funeral. We had family come from all over, and Sloan definitely got her fill of being the center of attention, most of which was well-deserved, I may add.
90 |
She was riding around in tractors and dancing to old country music and eating way too many chips when someone came up to me and commented on how great she was. It was more than the usual, “Wow, she’s so cute and looks just like you.” They specifically mentioned how smart she was and how well-behaved she was, especially in a new environment surrounded by new people. It was then, staring out at the farm I spent many summer days exploring, that I realized how ungrateful I had been in the previous weeks. I had been conditioned by other parents, society, and birthing books to dread the terrible twos—to look at this stage of parenthood as one of the worst ones. When really, it’s the opposite.

WHAT I’VE LEARNED One
It’s never too early to start teaching children. Don’t let the latest baby book dictate how and when your child can start learning.
Two
Throwing themselves on the floor in a fit of rage is something most kids will do once or twice. Try to remember it is unavoidable and may not have a solution. My advice? Make sure your little one is on a soft surface and practice deep breathing.

SOLITUDE ISN’T SCARY There are times Sloan will shut herself in her room and stay there until she feels like being around us again. This isn’t a bad thing. Let them decide what calms them down, whether it be a hug from you or a few minutes in their room by themselves.
I’m not going to sit here and say it’s easy, because it’s not. Honestly, it’s super difficult to not get discouraged and angry, and there are days that seem like the outbursts are never-ending. But slowing down to look at them differently has completely changed my perspective on what are “not-so-terrible twos.” Sloan’s need to turn the pages of her books by herself isn’t an act of defiance, but is an act of independence. She wants to “read” by herself, which is incredible. Random bouts of hitting and screaming still suck, but now I look for the solution instead of the cause. What is she trying to accomplish and can I help?
94 |
Not wanting to cuddle on the couch? While I used to be convinced she hated me and wanted nothing to do with me, I now understand that she is learning how to relax by herself, something that is much more important than my ego. There are a lot of things people tell you about parenthood, like how bad 2-year-olds are and that you will never sleep again. Take what you hear with a grain of salt and remember that children aren’t intentionally making life difficult, they are simply trying to understand it. Slow down, listen, and remember that even the worst milestones can be extraordinary.+

Flyover Country by Dawn Geertsema Joshua Novak co-founded and recently launched apparel company Flyover Country with partner Vaney Hariri. The pair were inspired by the idea that South Dakota and the Midwest is considered “flyover country,” and they say they want to use that notion to celebrate places that are sometimes overlooked by the masses. In Novak’s words, “To us, flyover country is home, and it’s where we want to be.” Novak chatted about his new company and more, including his nighttime talk show, “the 8PM Show,” which airs on Facebook.

5 Q U E S T I O N S W I T H N O VA K What’s the goal of the company? I believe everyone has flags or identities they stand behind. Sometimes it’s a sports team, a country, or a city flag. The goal of Flyover Country is to create that identity. We all have been asked the question at least once in our life, “Why do you live there?” I think it’s an important mental switch for our response to be, “Because I choose to.” It’s to celebrate the people that you might not think about at first; bartenders, nurses, teachers, coaches, or anyone working a 9-5 has their own incredibly important impact. We’re all a part of a community, and our involvement is what can continue to make it better. When you aren’t working with Flyover Country, how do you spend your time? I own a marketing company called Main St. Media House where I have the opportunity to work with different companies on their digital marketing and content creation. I really love what I do because it allows me to work with a lot of different industries and be creative. Where are your favorite places to visit here in South Dakota and why? I grew up going to my grandparents’ who live out by Lake Madison, so I always love going out there during the summer to get some wakeboarding in. But also, Carpenter Bar.

What’s the best part about living in South Dakota? [For] me, it’s been the access. It’s a great place to practice your craft, make mistakes, and get better. I would not be able to do what I’m doing today if it hadn’t been for the people I reached out to and [who] helped me along the way. I’ve found that the culture here makes that so much easier than other places. The best part is the fact that I have friends and family here in a city that I enjoy being in. What is something you want people to know about you? During the [COVID-19] situation, I was super bored in my house like everyone else. So I decided to host a nightly talk show. I had local business owners, artists, and creatives join my livestream remotely and did it every night for a month. I needed a life, so once we were all able to come out of our houses I started doing it once a week. It’s called The 8PM Show because it happens at 8 p.m. on Thursdays. I’ve never been asked what time it starts.
