That's why it's important to personalize your space to make it your own. I've actually become pretty obsessed with how people decorate Airbnbs. Is there a welcome note? Is there coffee? Are there towels easily accessible so you don't feel vulnerable when you hear your Airbnb host down the hallway when you're naked (TMI, sorry)? Is there a garbage can for my bottle of wine for when I watch "chick flicks" at night (I always worry they judge me the next morning).

Now it’s the only way we travel,” said Langenfeld. She started thinking about the idea of being an Airbnb host shortly after, and now has two homes in the heart of Sioux Falls: a Bohemian Brick Bungalow and a Mi Casa Su Casa Spanish Home (she is currently working on a third). On Airbnb, Langenfeld has earned the title of “Superhost,” so 605 asked her for tips on how to become a shining example for other Airbnb hopefuls.

Her Netflix is signed in, there’s a stocked Keurig, and there is also a collection of board games. “Ask yourself, ‘What would I like to see,’ and then make the space your own,” said Langenfeld.

“SEARCHING IN ANTIQUE STORES FOR FURNISHINGS ADDS TO THE CHARACTER— IT'S NOT ALL NEW, BUT INSTEAD IS A COLLABORATION BETWEEN NEW AND OLD.” After staying in an Airbnb without internet, she realized the personal touches are the deal breakers when it comes to making an Airbnb feel like a second home.

Create a Process Within 24 hours of guests booking or sending her a message on Airbnb, Langenfeld confirms details and then coordinates with a cleaner to get each house ready, creating a seamless process. From April to August, both homes were completely booked with 172 guests this past year. Her messiest visitors are families with small children, but neither of her homes have been left in total disarray, she says. Airbnb is set up so only guests with positive reviews can book automatically, filtering out any guests with "untidy pasts."

Be Thrifty Airbnbs don’t have to be separate homes like Langenfeld’s (you can use a spare bedroom or an upstairs), but if you decide to go the route of purchasing a property, work within your budget and be thrifty. After Langenfeld purchased her homes, she says she completely renovated them along with the help of her husband, which was key to staying within her budget. “It makes a huge difference if you do the remodeling work yourself—it could have cost $30,000 to re-do the bungalow,” she said. “Instead, we were the labor and had freelancers do the tiling and the jobs that needed expertise.”

Have Fun with it Owning Airbnb homes also gives Langenfeld an outlet for interior design. Each furnishing is handpicked from second-hand stores or from sales. While the bungalow has a quaint ambiance, her Mi Casa Su Casa home is decorated with a Spanish flair from cacti to baskets framing the dining room wall to bright decorative pillows. When Rozalyn Hays and Becca Aylward discovered their shared love for design and decorating, it didn’t take long for a creative partnership— and friendship—to form. “Roz was the first person I met when we moved here four years ago,” said Aylward. The women attend the same church, and while Hays grew up in the area, Aylward is an Oregon native who moved to Rapid City after her husband was stationed at Ellsworth Air Force Base. Neither of the women have a background in design. Hays studied criminology with a minor in art and worked in law enforcement, and Aylward’s background is in social work. But together, they form a dynamic team that’s changing the way the Rapid City community approaches interior design. 2 6 \\\\\\\\\ F E B R U A R Y

It all began when the pair started working with a real estate agent, helping stage homes to go on the market. “We were coming in and making these houses beautiful for the photos, but as we continued with that, we realized we wanted to do something more long term,” said Hays. “As soon as the houses sold, all of our decorating was done and the staging was over.” From there, Hays and Aylward moved on to new builds, and opportunities for more design work followed. “Both of us had tackled our own projects before, so we kind of just teamed up and decided to go for it,” said Aylward. The friends have been running their company, Hayward Design Co., for two years now, and the name came from a blending of their last names—Hays and Aylward.

As co-owners, they tackle a variety of projects from new builds to remodels—both residential and commercial—as well as purchasing, remodeling, and now running an Airbnb (The Hayward BnB). Hays and Aylward take pride in their affordability, especially in the Rapid City market.

“We really love what we do, and we’re not in it for the money,” said Hays. “We’re not looking to get rich off of this, we’re mostly just inspired by doing it.” In fact, the company is neither of the women’s full-time job. Both are full-time moms—Hays has a 3-year-old and a 5-year-old, and Aylward, a 2-year-old and 4-year-old. Additionally, Hays and her husband own and operate vacation rentals near Mount Rushmore. The pair believe that beautiful design should be accessible and affordable, and they make an effort to save money in creative ways, like scouring local thrift stores for unique pieces that can be reused or updated.

From dealing with clients who want to be involved in every detail, to those who hand the project over completely, Hays and Aylward have experience with a wide variety of budgets, timelines, personalities, and styles. But their work doesn’t always end with design. “We normally have a handyman, but there was one time when no one was free to take the job, and we ended up having to do it all,” said Aylward. “We’re not against getting our hands dirty. We’ll get the job done.”

As the company and their projects have developed over these last two years, their passion for the work has only become more clear. “I remember back when we did our first staging project and we walked away like, ‘Did you love that? I loved that,’” said Hays. “We were able to go into someone’s house and make it beautiful, so I think we knew right from the beginning that this was it.”

“The way the sunlight streams in through the windows, and the fact that it is tucked away from the kitchen, make it the perfect spot to relax.” The focal point of the room, and a family favorite, are the two chairs in each corner. Not only are they great for reflection and devotion, but Finley, the family pup, feels right at home in the oversized seats. “The chairs are long enough for the kids to spread out their homework, but still be comfortable.”

Jill Moret Design & Co. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE? JM: I feel like my style has really changed over the years. I think less is more. I really enjoy the modern farmhouse look, but with less décor and with statement pieces, mixing in lots of blacks and golds. I like to make simple things pop. I don’t want to worry about decorating when times get busy, and I want statement pieces that stick out. I also don’t want to have to clean around a lot of things.

AB: My style is pretty neutral with signs, either black or white with some gray. I like the neutral look because it’s easy to incorporate into other people’s homes. When we’re flipping homes, I like to have a modern farmhouse look with a contemporary twist on it. As a mom, I want to keep things practical and functional, and I also want it to be useful. I'm also striving to live more simply and only bring products or décor into our home that are useful or that I absolutely love. Following this

"simply dwell" method that I've coined has helped me to save money, decrease clutter, and it helps create a home that I love. WHEN DID YOU REALIZE YOU HAD A PASSION FOR DESIGNING? JM: I’ve always had a bug for décor. I love making my own décor and doing paint projects. Growing up, my family and friends have asked me for advice, so that was encouraging.

AB: My dad is a masonry contractor. We grew up in a farmhouse, and throughout my childhood, [my parents] were constantly renovating. Once I was in college, my husband (then boyfriend) bought a house and I helped him renovate it, so it’s just been part of who I am. One of my signs was also featured in HGTV Magazine’s July/August 2018 issue, so that’s rewarding.

Dwell 605 WHAT ARE THE TRENDY STYLES YOU’RE SEEING? JM: The modern décor look is popular. It’s white and clean with dark tones mixed in, plus bright and clean lines with a bold wall or dark accents. It’s just really clean. AB: One of the things I love the most is adding textures either through plants, furniture, or the walls. I’ve been in love with wallpaper lately. It’s a fun way to bring a different look that you can’t get with paint.

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST SURPRISE SOMEONE WOULDN’T KNOW ABOUT HOME RENOVATING? JM: It’s surprising how long it takes to tear the house apart. For our current house, we spent a whole month just taking things to the dump. AB: Renovation is all about the time and money. It’s something you really need to consider if you’re looking at getting into home flipping.

WHY IS DIY POPULAR? JM: You don’t have to have a lot of money to make the changes you want. A lot of people want to decorate a house and have big changes on a little budget. AB: People want to create a space that they love. When you can put your own stamp on the look and feel, it makes the home that much more special.

hile the “greeting between amigos” and namesake of the restaurant, ¿Que Pasa?, is casual (meaning “what’s happening… what’s up?”), the two-floor restaurant is anything but. Along with Rapid City’s best selection of tequila, the vacationstyle vibe, rooftop cantina, and outdoor patio make it a South Dakota bucket list must. Speaking of the menu, ¿Que Pasa? head chef Oscar Rivera and general manager Myrie O’Neil chatted with 605 on what’s new at the downtown hangout.

One item Rivera is excited about is the Vegetarian Nachos, with queso, beans, fried jalapeños, pico de gallo, guacamole, lime crema drizzle, and grilled vegetarian protein. “We have one of Rapid City's best menus for guests with dietary preferences, and

we're really expanding on that,” he said. Another is not completely new, but has been a little hush-hush until now—the Tri-Color Burrito. This includes grilled steak, smoked brisket, refried beans, and fire-roasted chiles stuffed into a flour tortilla, topped with cheese, pico de gallo, fried jalapeños, lime crema drizzle, tomatillo sauce, queso, and red chile sauce.

One must-try for February is The Heartbreaker, which combines Pure Blue Agave Tequila, peach liqueur, and house-made sweet and sour layered with grenadine. “I love the color and garnish in this drink,” said O’Neil. “We feel ‘heartbroken’ when it's gone.”

N THE MOOD FOR SOME CLASSIC BURGERS AND A SHORT DRIVE, 605 PUBLISHER ALANA SNYDER AND I MADE THE NINE-MILE TREK TO HARRISBURG, HOME TO THE TIGERS, THE HEARTLAND COUNTRY CORN MAZE, AND MUCH MORE. It was icy and deceivingly sunny, and the bitter cold led us to our first stop. We pulled in to Gravel Road Blend, which is one part of five that make up the 518 Marketplace, a shared space of new businesses.

While Alana found us a table, I immediately started searching for the source of a surprisingly flavorful smell. I was met by owner Shanon Abrahamson, who smiled and pointed to the daily special sign: Indian Tacos. Abrahamson told me this was different from their usual homemade soup and sandwich, and that they were trying something new. After ordering one of those and a few drinks, I ogled the Flyboy Donuts as Abrahamson told me a bit about her newest endeavor that came to fruition this past fall. “I heard the former coffee shop wasn’t renewing their lease, and in a moment of quick decision

making, I just jumped all in,” she said. Gravel Road Blend is known for items like the Iced Caramel Macchiato, the Wildberry Smoothie, and a variety of espresso drinks. Abrahamson also runs a small boutique within the space, and items can be seen along the wall, on either side of the fireplace. Being in a shared space, this isn’t the usual run-of-the-mill coffee shop, which is something Abrahamson is fully embracing. “We all get along really well, and it’s nice to have customers go from one shop to the next,” she said.

After snagging the macchiato and thanking Abrahamson for her barista magic, Alana and I crossed the parking lot to our next stop. We walked into the multipurpose building and up the stairs to Xtrinsic, an athleisure boutique that has been redefining comfortable clothing since last August. Right away we started adding items to our mental shopping cart, while owner Heather

Metz explained the importance of having multi-functional clothing. “You can wear it to the coffee shop, wear it to the grocery store, or drop the kids off at school, and still be cute and comfortable,” she said. More than leggings and tanks, Metz also offers shoes, yoga mats, hats, and fanny packs. “People can come in

for new leggings or a new headband, and we know they will leave comfortable,” she said. Naturally, we felt the need for burgers after leaving a store that focuses on comfort and fitness, so we plugged Harris Burgers into Google maps to try a local favorite.

First impression? We have time traveled to the '50s, and I needed to beat feet to the jukebox (which just so happened to be blasting Nicki Minaj). We walked in and were met with classic red and white checkered décor and a tantalizing smell of fried goodness. Open since June 2013, owner Nick Lund explained that he wanted Harris Burgers to be a timeless staple for South Dakota. “We serve high quality food at a much fairer price," he said. "We use the same ingredients in our burgers as a five-star steakhouse would, we just charge much less.” Taking a seat, we noticed the vintage arcade games (The Addams Family pinball for the win). Besides burgers and sandwiches, Lund says their shakes are a hot commodity. With more than 15 flavors, there's something to please every palate. “All of the shake flavors can be mixed, so the combinations are endless,” he said.•

t was late fall and everyone was talking about a new restaurant opening in Dell Rapids. I asked one friend who posted about it on Facebook, “What’s the deal with Papa’s Pub & Eatery? Do you know?” “Yeah, Alana, you probably know him. He’s at Gateway [Bar & Lounge] watching soccer with the American Outlaws most of the time.” His name is David, and I wouldn’t be shocked if I have indeed sat right next to him at the soccer bar watching matches with the Sioux Falls chapter. The only problem is, usually (for me) watching those involves a pitcher(s) of beer. So. A little foggy on that front sometimes. But the good news is that he was the one opening a new American fare eatery in the historic opera house building that was previously El Tapatio. 605’s Kyle Determan and I arrived at the location that is in the heart of Dell Rapids. We walked into the new business that can seat up to 84 in the main dining room and around 20 in the bar and lounge. Manager Nick Surdis greeted us and sat us in the large dining area. We noticed they didn’t have to do much to the décor since the building itself is already ornate and charming.

TRY IT: STARTERS STREET TACOS Choice of chicken, steak, or shrimp with three corn tortillas. With feta cheese, pico de gallo, and lime.

As we got up and wandered to take photos, we also noticed there were two images of a man on the bar and in a retro television set. “Oh my gosh, that’s Daniel [Ohayon],” yelped Kyle. “He coached me in soccer and was the nicest person.” Daniel was known as the first director of coaching and was a longtime association director for the Dakota Alliance Soccer Club, and sadly passed away three years ago. He’s also (more importantly) known for being David’s father. Surdis noticed us looking at the portrait by the bar area. “That is actually a painting that was gifted to the owners,” he said with a smile. After feeling a mixture of sadness and happiness that there is an homage to his legacy (among events like local soccer tournaments), we finally sat down and were served what the restaurant is already famous for: the Spinach Artichoke Dip. “This is a secret family recipe,” said Surdis. The homemade, three-cheese blend included spinach, artichoke hearts, toasted baguettes, and tortilla chips. “It’s very smooth,” said Kyle. We were very excited about the amount of chips and bread.

“I like that there are so many of them that you don’t have to feel stupid asking for more after four bites,” I said. I know, big problems in our lives. I’ve heard nothing but good things about this dip, but it wasn’t for me. Why? I’m a huge baby when it comes to chunky things, like the artichoke, for example. Kyle commented on how she enjoyed how creamy it was, and I do agree on that. Again, I am very specifically weird about large bites of spinach, artichoke, and the like, so this probably isn’t a fair judgement from my end. The first entree was the Caprese burger. This ⅓ lb. seasoned patty with tomato, mozzarella, pesto, and balsamic glaze was served with hand-cut fries. I. Was. Obsessed. Pesto on a burger is my new favorite thing, and the mozzarella was fresh and a great combo with the patty. “It’s like an elevated pizza burger,” noted Kyle. I legit would make the drive just for this burger. And then, we ate the fries. The seasoning was excellent, and we almost consumed the whole plate before realizing it was the first of the main courses. Maybe I would drive just for those, too. We both found it genius that they brand their burger buns with the logo. Hello, Instagram moment.

Next up, the Ribeye. The 12 oz. still munching on vegetables hand-cut ribeye had a choice (just kidding, it was more of bourbon mushroom cream mashed potatoes) when Kyle sauce or garlic herb butter (we took a couple of bites of the had the latter). Bot to m Li ne THIS IS A WONDERFUL ADDITION TO DELL RAPIDS. THERE IS A WIDE VARIETY OF DIFFERENT ENTREES, AND SO MUCH MORE I WANT TO GO BACK AND TRY. Even though the building is lovely, I’ve seen it as the businesses that have been there previously. It hasn’t changed much, and I would like to see more of Papa’s personality in there. But, again, you don’t really need to do much in that space as it's already lovely. So I can see why it is the way it is.

Prices are very reasonable. You’re paying around $10 for a burger and fries, and the steaks are less than $20. Dayum! I’d say that’s worth the drive right there.

My mouth just watered thinking of all the pesto. There are also a lot of other flavors as well, and Papa’s really delivers with quality. That was honestly one of the best burgers I’ve had in a while. And don’t forget Kyle’s “shrimp spa day” dish (she also did sip several cocktails, including a Long Island Iced Tea, so that could explain her descriptions).

PEOPLE MIGHT KNOW ME FROM… my work exhibited around downtown. I’ve been fortunate to participate in both solo and group shows in the area over the past few years.

A LOT OF MY INFLUENCES ARE… found in my surroundings. I'm drawn to strange color combinations and textures, scary movies, and tiny toys; antique and grocery stores are excellent places to let your eyes wander.

MY LOVE FOR LARGE-SCALE WEAVES STARTED… somewhat on an impulse. I have always had an appreciation for textiles, but had a very limited understanding of how weaving actually worked. My roommates had built a skateboard ramp in our backyard, so I took some scrap wood from that and built my first makeshift loom about four-and-a-half years ago. The entire venture has been a very intensive learning process, and I feel like each weave I complete, I unlock a little more understanding of the craft.

IF YOU’RE NOT LOOKING FOR A LARGE-SCALE WEAVE, I ALSO CREATE… paintings and photographs. And a mean cornbread casserole.

I’M PASSIONATE ABOUT VISUAL ARTS… because it's universal. You don't have to be a certain age or from a specific background to be a visual artist, you just have to have the courage to make an effort, to expose those unspoken parts of you. Each person views art differently, their emotions and interpretation fueled by their own experiences and interests. Even if you don't think you care about art, you're still having some sort of reaction to it.

MIXED MEDIA I USE INCLUDES… both

I CREATE LIVE LARGE-SCALE WEAVES AT EVENTS BECAUSE… it’s

new and found material. Two of the stranger things I've incorporated into a weave have been strips of an old fur boot and a dreadlock that was gifted to me from a friend. Neither of them smelled super great. I'm always on the lookout for interesting looking yarn or fabric, and am not against thrifting my material. (Pro tip: Place any thrifted yarn in the freezer for a few days to kill off any moth or little baby bug eggs!)

a great way to give more understanding to the process. Weaving is such a tactile experience, I think encouraging others to try it out themselves lessens the intimidation factor.

I’M KNOWN FOR BRIGHT POPS OF COLOR. I’M DRAWN TO THEM… because

different color combinations, and the way you can manipulate the perception of what you're viewing. I've been experimenting more with intricate patterns and designs that trick the eye. I've found Josef Albers’s Interaction of Color really helpful.

OTHER TYPES OF ART I WORK ON ARE… a food photography series called Put a Toy On It. Starting in 2012, I began taking miniature toys and photographing them with things I would eat for breakfast. I've struggled with my weight since I was a kid, so this was a way for me to document that internal feeling into something that made me comfortable to work with. I believe there are now over 200 photos in the series, which can be found on Instagram: #putatoyonit

WHEN I’M NOT WORKING ON PIECES OF ART, YOU CAN FIND ME… sleeping in the tub. I work full time, so a lot of my free time is spent on my craft. I try to work in the studio at least an hour a day, but sometimes it's more like four. On the weekends I enjoy checking out different antique stores, wandering around the mall, or playing board games with friends. I'm an old grandma lady.

MY GO-TO HANGOUT IS… my house. The older I get, the less I want to leave the house after dark. During the summer I love riding my bike downtown to hang out with friends, catching a show at Total Drag or Icon, or chugging a low-key beer in the Gilberto's parking lot.

SOMETHING THAT IS INFLUENCING ME RIGHT NOW IS… winter. I am so affected by the weather that I really need to push myself to stay on focus with my work. It’s too easy to go to bed at 8 p.m. when the sun is gone by 5 p.m. It can be an isolating time, so I try to stick to more of a regimented schedule to keep myself productive.

I LOVE TO GRAB A BITE OR DRINK AT… Sushi Masa, forever and always. I also recently discovered you can bring your own food to Fernson Brewing[Company], and

had fun eating way too much pizza during their Trivia Night.

ONE OF MY FAVORITE ARTISTIC WORKS IN SOUTH DAKOTA IS… The Porter Sculpture Park off of I-90 near Montrose. My dad’s side of the family is from Humboldt, so we would drive by it on the interstate every time we would visit. As a child I would imagine them to be alien artifacts or giant baby toys left behind. It’s one of those childhood attachments that has stayed with me.

I LOVE LIVING IN SOUTH DAKOTA… because it’s where most of the people I love are. I enjoy the slower pace and the familiarity attached to it. I think there are definitely areas that are problematic, but for the most part I am proud to call this place my home.

SOMEONE LOCAL WHO I ADMIRE IS… Anna Youngers and Darin Kaihoi. I’ve had the pleasure of working with them through exhibiting at Coffea [Roasterie] downtown, and I have always been so impressed by their warm, accommodating attitudes. They are artists themselves, Anna a painter, and Darin a musician. Anna’s skillset as a painter is just unreal, and I think she has helped elevate local artists who take her figure drawing classes. I’m so impressed by her students! I just have a deep appreciation for both of them, and feel lucky to have crossed paths with such a genuine couple.

MY FAVORITE THING ABOUT THE ARTS COMMUNITY IS… the everexpanding size of it. It’s a special thing to find “your people,” and I think Sioux Falls is really good about

being inclusive. I love Ipso Gallery at Fresh Produce, and think that their crew continuously puts on playful, provoking exhibitions. I’m still thinking about their Ka-Chunk show over a year later. I’ve also been impressed by Vishnu Bunny Third Eye Gallery, and think they do a great job of offering a place for new artists to show their work. I love when you can see artists (both new and established) pushing themselves, and them having the support of their community to follow through with their visions.

Home is Where the Crib Is

ne of the first things I started thinking about after I found out I was pregnant was the nursery. Of course, being that we were in the middle of flipping a house (and still are), the basics needed to be finished. 9 2 \\\\\\\\\ F E B R U A R Y

closet had no doors, which I ended up leaving because, let’s get real, baby clothes are the cutest and I wanted to stare at them all day long.

I spent a lot of time in that room, just sitting and thinking. Thinking about colors and decorations, but also about sounds and smells. Little giggles and the sweet smell of new baby were about to take over, and I needed to create a space worthy of that magic.

I used gray storage bins on the shelves in the closet, and a different kind of gray storage bin in her bookshelf. These allow for me to still stay organized while having easy access to things like socks and burp cloths. Next up was the crib.

There was a point in the decorating process when I began to feel like everything was generic and sterile. I didn’t want too much pink, or color in general, but I also didn’t want it to feel like a hospital room. That’s when I decided to make something from scratch.

The crib was a gift from a loving parents, and it is perfect. I wanted something white to match the trim, but I also wanted something classic that could grow with Sloan. I can’t recommend getting a 4-in-1 crib enough. Just thinking about only having to modify the crib to

This gave me the moment of creativity and tranquility that I unknowingly needed. Building a space for your baby can be really stressful, but it doesn’t have to be. Tackling one aspect of her room at a time kept me sane and focused.

Beyond the emotional aspect of creating a calm and inviting space for my soonto-be bambino, I also wanted it to be something I enjoyed. The walls were already painted a light blue with white trim, which looked clean and crisp against the dark floors. The
