The 605 team actually stopped by Café Louisiana in Yankton to do a restaurant review, which typically doesn’t include an interview. After trying their incredible Creole-inspired menu, I had to ask more. A few minutes into the conversation, I knew we had to do a larger feature on the company. Also, I may or may not have eaten three beignets. Don’t ask questions.
John Snyder
I got the chance to hang out with Maja Cromwell from Main Street Square in Rapid City, and she showed me some of her favorite spots around town. We constantly were stopping to chat, because she knew someone in every business we walked into. I’m used to being the popular one, so Maja better watch her back!

I’ve seen earrings from Curated Clay by Jeanine in a couple of places downtown. It was really great to learn how she got started, her inspiration, and her workspace this month. I love how all pieces are so unique, handmade, and colorful. Plus, it’s always great to be able to shop and learn about local makers.

I’ve always thought it might be fun to try axe throwing, and after reading about The Boat House, I’m convinced that I have to try it now. And coincidentally I’m going to be camping in Yankton this month, so I’m pretty sure this is a sign from the universe that I should swing some axes at zombies.
Taylor Hanson
If you’re ever in the Pierre area and would like to enjoy a craft cocktail, then you need to stop by St. Charles Lounge. The 605 team hung out and tried some of their “must-have” drinks, and let me tell you, I would drive to Pierre once a month just to have the Sparkplug Martini.
Dawn Geertsema
The team explored Curated Clay by Jeanine and her inventory of earrings. Her designs are so beautiful and nothing like anything else I’ve seen before. I may just have to scroll her Instagram again and pick up a pair for myself (if they haven’t already sold out). Everyone’s earlobes deserve to be treated to a one-of-a-kind pair of clay earrings.

605, Sioux Falls’ Fernson Brewing Company, and Rapid City’s Lost Cabin Beer Co. collaborated for a second year for volume two of the 605 Magazine Summer Issue. 14 |
605MAGAZINE.COM
Last year’s inaugural launch occurred on 605 Day (June 5) at events held at Main Street Square in downtown Rapid City and at Fernson Downtown in Sioux Falls. “The Summer Issue was a hit,” said Fernson marketing director Evan Richards. “We launched the beer with a party on our patio at Fernson Downtown, and it was the most fun we’ve had on that patio yet.” “We sold out pretty quickly, so that's usually a good sign,” added cofounder of Lost Cabin Jesse Scheitler. “I think this time of year people are looking for a trail/lake/patio beer, and the 605 Summer Issue is the ticket.” The style for the 2020 edition is a honey pale ale. Fernson made five barrels and Lost Cabin made a seven-barrel batch. The beer will be available in cans at Fernson Downtown and at the Lost Cabin taproom. Like last year, the beer collaboration will launch in time to celebrate 605 Day on Friday, June 5.
South Dakotans are asked to celebrate however they (safely) can (more on page 10). 605 will be hosting the Downtown Sioux Falls First Friday on the DTSF’s Facebook from 4-9 p.m. and will be joined by Richards for an appearance to have the beer delivered during the live stream. “605 Day is an excuse to celebrate all of the great things about South Dakota at once,” said Richards. Scheitler is looking forward to the annual state appreciation day as well. “We love where we live, and couldn't be prouder to brew beer in South Dakota,” he said. “We push the state pride vibe all year, but 605 Day gives us an excuse to celebrate and shout about all the culture, natural beauty, and history that makes us happy to call ‘SoDak’ home.”

Bringing Cajun to Yankton By Austin L ammers
“Our restaurant… it’s home-y. We call it our second home. We love having people in here, happy and having great food.” - Leah Nelams 16 |
605MAGAZINE.COM
There’s really no such thing as “Louisiana cooking,” Zachary Fournet, owner of Yankton’s Café Louisiana, says. There’s Creole—born in the city, from the streets of New Orleans. And there’s Cajun—contrived from the southwest Louisiana countryside, where he and his wife, Leah Nelams, grew up. The cooking styles, developed in the 19th century, vary in ingredients, and when Fournet and Nelams order gumbo in restaurants anywhere north of the South, what they say they usually taste is “a diluted hybrid of the two.” It was 2001 when Fournet, then 18 years old, first wrote down ‘Café Louisiana’ on a piece of paper. He wanted to bring authentic Cajun cuisine to a place where it didn’t exist. In 2010, he and Nelams decided to make it happen. They just didn’t know when, or where. So they closed their eyes and threw a dart at a map. It landed on Yankton, South Dakota, where they moved three years later. But that was just the beginning of the journey. “When we made it out here, we worked at the [Sapa Extrusions] factory (now Hydro),” said Fournet. “We grinded and saved all the money we could. We didn’t even have a couch in the house, or a TV. We didn’t go out or do anything. We were focused on what we wanted to do.” After five years of frugality, Fournet and Nelams opened Café Louisiana on Broadway Avenue on July 1, 2019. Po’ Boys. Hushpuppies. Alligator Burgers. Crawfish Pies. Real Jambalaya. From up the Mississippi and over to the Missouri, Cajun cuisine found its way to Yankton. It’s a small joint—the only other employee is a family friend and skilled cook named Hunter Techemange, better known to Yankton as T-Cuz, Cajun for “little cousin.” The three have the luxury of running the only Cajun restaurant in the area, but with it comes the responsibility of delivering to a meat-and-potato-palated population.

Cravin’ Cajun? In the late 1700s, the British forced CanadianFrench settlers (known as Acadians) out of Canada and into America. Some followed the Mississippi River down to the Frenchdominant swamps of Louisiana, where they were welcomed with open arms. Thus was the birth of the “Cajuns.” Cajun cuisine, despite its reputation for fiery and heavily-spiced plates, really just incorporates smoked meats like chicken, pork, and sausage into pot-based dishes, like jambalaya or gumbo. While Creole cooking uses tomato-based sauces and butter-based roux, Cajun cooking uses roux made of lard or oil and bypasses tomato sauces altogether. Simply put: if Creole is a soup, Cajun is a stew.

Café Louisiana updates its menu daily on its Facebook page.
“Any food we cook, we sample out,” said Nelams. “My husband’s a good talker. People will come in and say, ‘Oh, what’s Shrimp Étoufée?’ He explains the ingredients and gives a rundown on the foods we cook and where they come from.”
Like many business owners across the nation, Fournet and Nelams feared the COVID-19 crisis would financially jeopardize the restaurant; it was said long before the global pandemic that 90 percent of restaurants fail within the first year. But to their delight, Yankton embraced Café Louisiana from the beginning, says Nelams.
While customers can taste everyday menu items like Catfish and Butterfly Shrimp and Boudin Links from the white chalkboard, Nelams and T-Cuz cook two or three late lunch specials every evening. Nelam’s favorite is a Meatball Fricassée, a dark, rich traditional stew home-stirred for two hours before being served. For a sweet finish, Benyays (beignet = French donut) were brought back by popular demand after a four-month hiatus from the menu.
“Before we opened, I was super scared. I was like, ‘Oh my god, are they gonna like this food?’” he recalled. “Yankton showed us love. They support us to this day, and it hasn’t even been a whole year. Because of the crisis, it’s slowed down a little bit, but Yankton showed us tremendous support. I can’t brag enough.”
“When I quit selling ‘em, everyone wanted ‘em,” said Fournet with a laugh.

People might know me from... being around town
for so many years. I talk a lot, so I’m sure I’ve interrupted your conversation at one point or another!
I started Curated Clay by Jeanine… in
September 2019. It came about organically as a way to save money on earrings by creating my own for almost every outfit I wore. Once I got going, I couldn’t stop. After a while, I was creating for friends and family, which is just my favorite. I started Curated Clay by Jeanine on Instagram (@curatedclaybyjeanine), and it snowballed from there.
My inventory includes... medium to large
earrings that are many different styles, shapes, and colors. The brighter, the better. When I create a pair, I’m always thinking of them as a statement. It’s the only piece of jewelry you’ll need for your outfit. They are extremely lightweight, even with their large size. I use hypoallergenic posts to cater to sensitive ears, too. Many of my pieces are one of a kind, and I usually don’t make more than one of the same pair unless requested.
Buyers of my pieces are of ten looking for... something unique, bold, and comfortable to wear.
One of my favorite parts of the creative process... is the mixing of clay
colors and finding new styles. It literally is endless. I try to stand out with the designs and shapes of my earrings the most. I use clay cut outs for shapes, but many of the shapes I’ve created on my computer, printed them, then cut them out of clay.

I’ve found the most success through...
social media and word of mouth about my earrings.
My most proud moment with Curated Clay by Jeanine was... being able to have my pieces in local shops downtown. It’s pretty crazy to think that things I love to create are being offered amongst other great inventory at local storefronts.

A local shop you can f ind my pieces in is... Terra Shepherd
Boutique & Apothecary downtown. [Owner] Sara Jamison handpicked a small batch. I also have a custom collection I created for TH Grey downtown. Check out their new ownership.
My day job is... I’m an elementary
teacher in the Harrisburg School District. I teach grades K-5 for English language. I can’t remember wanting to be anything other than a teacher. I taught f irst grade a number of years, then switched it up and wanted a challenge. I love supporting multilingual students and helping them to succeed, and I learn so much from them every day. I can’t imagine doing anything else with my life.
My favorite place to go for inspiration is... the hallways of my school, actually. The art projects the elementary kiddos at my school do are always so bright and colorful. I love it.
Something people should know about Curated Clay by Jeanine is... many of my earrings
are one of a kind. I also do custom pairs based on your color or style suggestions. I am working on creating more jewelry than just earrings as well, such as barrettes and pendants.
Something I’m doing with my business right now that I’m excited about is... incorporating my new logo into packaging, as well as being able to accept purchases on different platforms other than Instagram.

I love to grab a bite or drink at... Carpenter Bar or M.B. Haskett Delicatessen. I
always end up running into someone I know at Carpenter Bar; stop-and-chats are my favorite. The atmosphere is great, they introduced me to my favorite tequila, and the music is always on point. I enjoy M.B. Haskett’s poached eggs and toast, their mimosas. And I love their back patio.

Some things I love about South Dakota are... the seasons. I don’t think I could
live without the feeling of rebirth every spring, and although brutal at times, there’s something special about the first winter snowfall.
Some locals who I admire are... all of my lovely friends and family who have
been so supportive as I started this little clay journey. I don’t know what I’d do without their support.

Sitting back to relax in the 1911 St. Charles Hotel in Pierre isn’t the same experience that it used to be. What was once flooded with senators is now home to St. Charles Lounge and its “signature sips.”
Since Nathaniel Wilt became owner of the St.
Charles Lounge in October 2016, he has offered a
variety of his own exclusive drinks along with beer and a few classic cocktails.
Wilt says that many residents had lived in bigger cities and experienced better cocktails than what was available in the area when he arrived. “I wanted to bring that to Pierre,” said Wilt. “I wanted to give them the chance to have a little bit nicer beer, nicer cocktails, nicer selection of spirits, but keep that rustic feel.”
As summer is fast approaching, the Cucumber Collins, a signature house favorite, is expected to become popular once again. The drink is made with Hendrick’s gin, fresh-squeezed lemon juice, simple syrup, peeled cucumber slices, and a splash of club soda.
“This is a refreshing cocktail, perfect for sipping on warm summer days,” said Wilt.

The Cucumber Collins isn’t the only house favorite at St. Charles Lounge. A spiked twist on a classic latte, the
Sparkplug Martini, is another frequent order. It’s made up of fresh-brewed espresso (created with a $3,000 espresso machine), vanilla vodka, and Kahlúa all mixed together. Wilt says not all available cocktails appear written up on the chalkboard menu near the bar.
“One of my favorite off-menu cocktails we create here is the Vieux Carré, a cocktail originally created in the 1930s
at the famous Carousel Bar & Lounge in New Orleans,” he noted. The drink has rye whiskey, cognac, Bénédictine, brandy, sweet vermouth, and a few different bitters. “It’s very similar to a Manhattan,” continued Wilt. “It’s a little bit more well rounded, in my opinion.” Another borrowed recipe is that of the Cable Car. This has a mix of Captain Morgan Spiced Rum, Orange
Curaçao, and fresh-squeezed lemon sour, garnished with a cinnamonsugared rim. “The Cable Car is a cocktail created in 1996 by famed barman Tony AbouGanim,” said Wilt. “It’s a modern variant on the classic Sidecar, and it commemorates the Starlight Room
in the [Kimpton Sir Francis] Drake Hotel in San Francisco.”

Though St. Charles Lounge mainly focuses on cocktails, there are also a couple options to satisfy an empty stomach. The lounge offers popcorn for those just looking to snack, and pizza provides a more filling choice. Walking into the former Pierre hotel, the historical feel of the building melds with the modern speakeasy atmosphere of the lounge Wilt has created. Belt-driven fans rotate on the ceilings, keeping the bar cool, while also maintaining the atmosphere. Prints on the walls are recreations of concert posters that date back to the 1960s. Located in a room behind the lounge is a space for hosting events. In the past, St. Charles Lounge has hosted live music performances, trivia competitions, karaoke, and even a few holiday parties. Channeling college days, the lounge has even hosted a beer pong competition.
“From floor to ceiling, everything was recently remodeled,” said Wilt. This includes a custom bar top. Many of his visions, he says, came from his vast background in the bar and restaurant industry. Before owning St. Charles Lounge, Wilt earned 10 years of experience bartending at the Bellagio and ARIA, two reputable resorts in Las Vegas. He came out to Pierre to “help modernize the bar,” and after six weeks and multiple offers, he accepted ownership of the business. “The people are nice,” said Wilt of the area. “That’s the number one reason I stayed here.”

The lounge just went through a renovation that Wilt says has gone over very well with locals and visitors alike.

fter t ying the knot in December 2013, Ashley and Colby Flynn moved into their newly built home. Located in southeastern Sioux Falls, the ranch-st yle abode is kid friendly, perfect for entertaining, and is an outdoor lover’s dream.

In Sight with Natur al Light Stepping through the red front door, guests’ eyes follow the dark hardwood from the spacious entryway, through the open-concept living space, and right through the big windows into the backyard. “The kids’ faces are just glued to the windows if there’s ducks or geese back there,” said Ashley. And while 4-year-old Nina and 1-year-old Beau stare out the windows, play, or watch TV in the living room, Ashley and Colby have a clear sightline while they’re cooking in the kitchen. “It’s nice being able to watch them, and they’re not in a separate room,” said Ashley. “Though, I also feel like it is far enough away that if we had people over, we’re not all on top of each other.”

With a total of almost 3,200 square feet, there is plenty of space to spread out. “I like this layout a lot,” she continued. Their kitchen has a large island, which Ashley says she utilizes for setting up a buffet for guests and for special occasions. And the deep color of the custom Dakota Kitchen & Bath cabinets masks smudges and fingerprints from the kids, creating an atmosphere designed to compensate for messes. “There’s lots of cabinet space,” said Ashley. “We find ourselves struggling to fill it all.”

Casting in Comfort Right off the living space is a door that opens onto the large deck attached to the back of the charcoal-colored house.
Colby, an avid fisherman, spends many of his nights after work casting into the calm waters.
The sun rises at the back of the home and sets at the front.
“This pond is really neat,” remarked Ashley. “There’s ducks. Every spring, we get mallards. Colby, what are some of the ducks we get?”
“You can have coffee and breakfast on the deck and watch the sun come up while it’s not too hot yet,” said Ashley. “But then, barbecuing on the deck is perfect because you’re totally in the shade.” The vast, shaded yard isn’t the only rare asset of the lot.
(Colby listed four more types of ducks from the other room.) “Colby has taught me about all the different kinds of ducks,” Ashley laughed. “I just think a duck’s a duck.”
Just beyond the back yard is a massive pond stocked with walleye, crappie, and perch.

Relaxing with a View Along with ducks, the family also likes to watch minks, muskrats, and other pond wildlife through the windows in the living space and the master bedroom.
Continuing through the bathroom and into a walk-in closet, Ashley picked up an extension pole with a hooked end that is meant to help bring items down off the top rack.
“Something we wanted when doing the master was a view of the pond,” said Ashley. “We really love it.”
Just as she acquired the hook when she moved in, she wants to pass it on.
Connected to their bedroom is a spacious bathroom with a tub-less shower and plenty of cabinet space. Granite countertops, a feature in most of the bathrooms, complete the double vanity.
“We would joke if you buy our house, we will give you the hook,” said Ashley, laughing. “It comes with the hook.”

Children’s Chambers Beau’s room, painted in Benjamin Moore’s Manor Green, is on the main floor with the master. The type of décor that is sprinkled throughout the nursery reflects Colby’s outdoorsy interests. Beau’s room is home to one of his grandfather’s taxidermic ducks, a goatskin throw, and different wildlife-themed prints. Nina’s room, located in the basement, was inspired by Ashley’s upbringing.
One wall is covered in a black and pink floral wallpaper, while the other walls are painted a pastel pink. Tying in with the accents in the wallpaper, the ceiling is lavender. The room is made up of a combination of repurposed items from Ashley’s childhood and new pieces. Along with a couple of ballerina prints, the Flynns have also upcycled Ashley’s old dresser, painting it to make it feel new.
“I selfishly wanted this room to be what I would want in a little girl’s room,” said Ashley.

IF YOU’RE ANYTHING LIKE ME, YOU HEAR GOLF COURSE FOOD AND THINK BEER, PEANUTS, AND ANYTHING ELSE YOU CAN EAT WHILE RIDING OR WALKING FROM HOLE TO HOLE.
“These garage doors open up to the driving range, so you can still stay warm and drink some beer while hitting a few golf balls,” said manager Jed Griffith. “We even have space heaters we bring out during the colder months.”
Well, prepare to be amazed because 605 found Miller Creek Pub and Patio at Elkhorn Ridge Golf Club. This Spearfish eatery is known for serving locally grown options from their three-seasons dining area located on the Historic Frawley Ranch, between a putting green and a driving range.
“This doesn’t feel like a golf course restaurant,” said Yany.
6845 SAINT ONGE ROAD, SPEARFISH
As Griffith left to get the food started, 605’s multimedia designer Yany Avelar and I showed ourselves to the outdoor fireplace to stay warm and appreciate the view of Elkhorn Peak.
And honestly, it didn’t. It felt more like the upscale resort setting of High School Musical 2 (minus the desert). Considering that the business had only been open since August 2019, the space felt very fresh, open, and ready to entertain.

Naturally, we started with the beverage menu. Griffith had mentioned they only had their beer and wine license, so my go-to Jack and Coke was out of the question. However, they had a great selection of local beers, like Father in Lager from Lost Cabin Beer Co., as well as an array of wine-based drinks like the Lemon-Lime Margarita. The last time I had a wine-based margarita was college and needless to say, I was a little nervous. However, this margarita was in a totally different wheelhouse than the ones from my past. It was smooth, refreshing, and just the right amount of tart. “I would never have guessed this didn’t have tequila in it,” sipped Yany.
We found a spot next to the driving range and were met with a literal feast. I’m not kidding, they had to bring another table over for all of the food. In an effort to not get overwhelmed, we started with the salad. Whenever I see “Cobb salad” I get a little nervous because it will almost always have three things: cold meat, hard-boiled eggs, and bacon. While I love these things by themselves, together on a bed of leaves is different. The Billy Grant Cobb Salad, however, was different. Made up of fresh mixed greens, chopped hard-boiled eggs, tomatoes, bacon, cheddar cheese, country-sliced ham, and freshly made croutons, I finally get it when people say salads are refreshing. On hearing our excitement towards, the greens, Griffith explained that the produce is grown in a garden on the grounds of the golf course.

Not only was it delicious, it was giant. “This could be a meal for two people,” said Yany. Pacing ourselves, we moved on to the Chicken Wings. I want to start by saying I am a wimp when it comes to spice. When I say a wimp, I mean I sweat bullets when I eat mild salsa. Yany, on the other hand, lives for spicy food and was much less hesitant—and for good reason. These wings, which are served with your choice of barbecue or buffalo sauce, were very meaty and the sauce had a different tang to it, making it easy to smash an order of six. “I usually don’t like when they aren’t swimming in sauce, but I love these,” said Yany. The sauce to meat ratio was spot on, as well as the crispiness of the skin. All in all, a solid appetizer or snack after a round of golf.

Next was the Polo Canyon Patty Melt with sautéed onions and American and Swiss cheese on Texas toast. Served with homemade fries, coleslaw, or chips, Yany and I had to go with homemade fries and it was the best decision we made all day. “These fries are bomb,” said Yany in between joyous bites of potato. And that they were. They were crispy, the right size, and the flavors were just enough to complement the main dish. Speaking of, the patty melt was an experience of its own. Covered with onions and cheese, it was a little overwhelming. With that being said, the onions had an intense sweetness to them that added a whole new layer to the patty melt game. I was explaining to Yany how I don’t usually flock to patty melts, but this combination of onions and Texas toast would keep me coming back for more.

FACT:
MILLER CREEK INCORPORATES INGREDIENTS FROM THEIR ONSITE GARDEN AND CHICKEN COUPE.
“I was a little worried because I don’t like when burgers have giant patties, but these flavors are worth it,” said Yany. “Honestly, we might have to take the rest home.” Last on our food coma journey were the freshly made scones. Not being able to say no to any form of bread, I dug into the Blueberry scone first, and then the Lemon Poppyseed. Before I knew it they were half gone, I had reached my limit, and Yany was staring. After one bite she looked at me and said, “I know you hate this word, but these are some moist scones.” She was right.+
BOTTOM LINE: This restaurant makes me want to be good at golf. Whether you’re just playing through or stopping by for an entire meal, Miller Creek offers not only a wide array of menu choices (close to 30), but the various seating options allow for a personalized experience every time. If the view wasn’t enough to make me come back, can I reiterate my (uncharacteristic) love for the salad?

Does it get better than a three-seasons restaurant that offers beer, entertainment, and a driving range? This place left me wondering why more golf courses don’t sandwich their eateries between a putting green and a driving range. Also, talk about views.
With most sandwiches costing $10 and appetizers ranging from $7-$9, there is no reason not to make a stop before, during, or after your round of golf. Actually, there is no reason not to go even without the golfing part.
There is something so comforting about fresh produce in an outdoor setting. The flavors the dishes bring out of the produce are unlike store-bought veggies, and they definitely add something unique. Not to mention Miller Creek offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner, which are three of my favorite things.

I also manage the Downtown Business Group, and popping in to visit business owners has become one of the most rewarding aspects of my career.
If I’m not feeling up to cooking, the Vertex Sky Bar has the most wonderful Drunken Clams, and they come with a picturesque, roof-top view. Pro-tip: I like mine with extra lemon. However, if you’re visiting with a surf and turf group, we always bring our friends and family to Delmonico Grill. Their wall art and atmosphere is one of a kind, and their scallops are the best I’ve ever had.
When I need to turn off the internal noise, I walk downtown. In the summer, we install 132 planters and hanging baskets in the area. It’s a lovely way to relax and take in the beauty of our downtown. I make a point to visit Art Alley to check out any new pieces that may be up. It’s truly a gift to watch the visitors as well, to glimpse a happy memory that they’ll cherish forever, and to be part of that makes any anxieties melt away.
Passions for Plants and Pets
I feel very passionate about plants and our environment, so I like to do my part to help. Victoria’s Garden’s “Flower Goddesses” will not only make you the most beautiful arrangements but they also have an amazing selection of plants and yard decorations. They also have three shop kitties, a pup, and a repurposed tub full of goldfish. A visit to their shop can brighten even the darkest of days.
Being from California, I am a huge seafood lover. Dakota Seafood on Jackson Boulevard has the best fresh and sustainably farmed selection of seafood—as well as already prepared meal items.
Under the South Dakotan Sunset
As any good South Dakotan knows, we have some of the most beautiful sunsets. One of my favorite activities is to join the community at Main Street Square for our Golden Hour Live concerts for music, brews, and snacks. I truly enjoy any and all of the events we throw at Main Street Square: Cruiser Car Show, Bridal Fair, Kids’ Carnival, Pumpkin Festival, Bierbörse, and Winter Market are just a few.

The Boat House D O IN G D OWNTOWN D IFFERENTLY By Austin L ammers
IF IT HAD BEEN 2002, WHEN CHRIS HUNHOFF WAS A STUDENT AT MOUNT MARTY COLLEGE, HE AND HIS FRIENDS WOULD’VE FELT SATISFIED SPENDING THEIR SATURDAY NIGHT HOPPING BARS IN DOWNTOWN YANKTON UNTIL LAST CALL. BUT IT WASN’T 2002. IT WAS 2017, AND THE GROUP STROLLED PAST TINTED BAR FRONTS AND NEON SIGNS IN SEARCH OF SOMETHING ELSE. THAT’S WHEN HUNHOFF HAD AN IDEA.
“One of those friends lives in Denver, so I used to visit him quite often,” said Hunhoff. “Whenever we were out there, we never just sat at a bar. We usually were throwing axes, playing mini-golf, doing virtual reality, going to old arcades. We always had a destination. While we were walking around, I was thinking, ‘Why don’t we have anything like that here in Yankton?’” A destination, Hunhoff envisioned. A place in Yankton that offered everything a taproom would—local brews and pool tables and good conversation — but bedecked with axe throwing and golf simulation and custom-built games. A place that could entertain beer drinkers and families alike. The idea sat on the back burner for three years while Hunhoff worked his day job in IT consulting. Then, in November 2019, Hunhoff ’s father offered him a tour of the shed he’d just purchased on East 3rd Street, formerly known as River City Tool & Pawn. His father planned to use it for storage. Hunhoff stepped inside and saw his idea buried under 7,000 square feet of junk.

“The coolest part is watching people stick an axe for the first time. I know the feeling and I don’t know how to describe it, but you can see everyone who does it has the same feeling. There’s something about it that speaks to your soul. It’s the best therapy I think you can have.”

“It was packed from corner to corner. You wouldn’t believe how much stuff was in there,” recalled Hunhoff. “For some reason, I thought, ‘This is the place.’” For the next three months, Hunhoff and his crew cleared the clutter and laid the foundation for The Boat House. He installed six projector-based axe throwing stations custom-made by a pair in Dallas—each can display different throwing modes like tic-tac-toe and zombie hunting. He purchased a lightly used golf simulator from a couple that had it sitting in their garage, then called on a man from Sioux Falls who builds homemade shuffleboard tables. Next came skeeball, snooker (pool) tables, and foosball. On February 28, they hosted their first customers—just a few hours before the bathroom tiles were laid. Lastly, a longtime friend of Hunhoff ’s father crafted a 51-foot bar from scratch, which Hunhoff, admitting bias, calls “one of the most beautiful bars in the state.” Hunhoff supplies it with a variety of local craft brews from Yankton and Sioux Falls. “We’re doing our best to go local wherever we can. It’s important to us,” he said. “A few kids are starting a brewery a few blocks from us and we can’t wait to have their beers.”
“The best I could compare it to is the atmosphere in downtown Spearfish on a Friday night in the summer,” he said. “That’s what I want downtown Yankton to be like. And to do that you need different attractions to bring people out. It’s about us working together to create this downtown experience.” It’s impossible to create such an atmosphere without first cultivating individual experiences, and Hunhoff says it’s easier to do so at a place where people can legally throw axes at things. In fact, he said, it’s developed into an unfailing sales technique inspired by one teenager who didn’t want to be at The Boat House in the first place. “One day we had a family in here and the daughter was around 18. She seemed surly and was on her phone the whole time and you could tell she wasn’t really excited to be here,” said Hunhoff. “Her family and I finally got an axe in her hand. She took that axe, whipped it at the target and buried it. Bullseye on her first-ever throw. The smile on her face and the way that family interacted after that… it was pretty cool. I’m excited about what this place is gonna bring.”

As a board member of Onward Yankton, an entrepreneurial-focused initiative, The Boat House is just a piece of the ambiance downtown business owners are trying to create. It’s not about competition, Hunhoff says, it’s about cooperation.

Lost Cabin Beer Co. LOSTCABIN.BEER Co-founded by Jesse Sheitler and Tom Silbernagel, Lost Cabin Beer Co. is “fueled by craft beer, passion, the great outdoors, fun, and the Black Hills.” Located in Rapid City, the brewery is on a mission to “make great beer and have a great time doing it.” “We take our beer very seriously but never ourselves, so it’s not uncommon to see our crew keeping things weird at any opportunity,” said Scheitler. While enveloping customers in the fun atmosphere of their taproom, he says they’re also trying to immerse the customers in South Dakotan culture. “While the Hills are notorious for tourist traps, we have always strived to bring authenticity to everything we do,” said Scheitler. “We love where we live, so it has always been our goal to brew beers and create a brand that the people of [South Dakota] can feel connected to.” Part of the Black Hills culture are the outdoor activities that the employees of Lost Cabin enjoy, along with many visitors.
“If we aren’t at the brewery, you can catch us on a trail hiking, fishing, climbing, camping, or biking,” said Scheitler. Typically the brewery also hosts events, but due to COVID-19 there are none in June. “We were incredibly sad to have to clear our event schedule, as we do so love to throw a rager party,” said Scheitler. Lost Cabin is dedicated to supporting the communities it distributes to. So far, they have given back to 44 charities and have raised $34,346 for various organizations. As the website states, Lost Cabin is aiming to “leave the world a better place than we found it.” Soon, the company will be expanding their reach as well. “This year, we purchased a second production facility and are very much looking forward to distributing beer statewide soon,” said Scheitler.+

Summer Staycation B y Ky l e D e t e r m a n
Amid the virtual graduation ceremonies and postponed concert series, many parents, myself included, are realizing that their summer vacation plans are also put on hold. Whether it be a quick trip to the family cabin with relatives or a full-blown excursion to Disney World, we are left to fill the holes that were supposed to be full of showand-tell worthy extracurriculars. 74 |
In an effort to bring joy and normalcy to our littles in this time of uncertainty and fear, it is important, no‌ vital, to dig deep into their imaginations to create lasting memories that don’t require a golden ticket or groups of more than 10. With Sloan being just shy of 2, her expectations for an unforgettable summer vacation were quite low, and honestly, she would be fine with seeing a dog or two and following ants around the block. I, however, am not. This was going to be our first summer with her being able to walk around and comprehend things, and our plans for daily trips to the zoo or surprise trips to a horse camp were things I was really looking forward to.

What I’ve Learned E
Children absolutely love making new things out of old things. Take boxes, junk mail, or even old clothes and let your children create. You’ll be amazed at what a 2-year-old can make out of a T-shirt.

Taking breaks during quarantine is not being lazy, it’s being conscious of your fuel tank. Don’t underestimate the power of a 10 minute timeout with iced coffee and some “play in your room” time.

Walks are never boring if you remember to appreciate what you have around you. Live in the country? Try taking a different gravel road. Live in the city? Play I-Spy through the alphabet as you walk around the block.
So, after a very pitiful wallowing session, too many hours on Pinterest, and a hefty purchase of sidewalk chalk, I was ready for the first day of summer camp. I welcome you to Camp Stay At Home—where children of all ages can enjoy (almost) everything they would during their canceled vacations. For us, our summer to-do list included visiting family, exploring zoos, and enrolling in community classes like swimming lessons and “How To Make a Kaleidoscope with No Glue.” Taking all of those into consideration, I set out on dedicating different spots in my house to different trips. The backyard, our kitchen, and our living room seemed most fitting for the experiences that lay ahead. First up was our trip to the zoo. Unlike Carole Baskin, I do not have 24-hour access to members of the large cat family. I do, however, have access to YouTube, which has provided me with numerous bird calls, squirrel noises, and insect identification tutorials.

Let me tell you, having a pair of cardinals swoop at your phone for 15 minutes makes you feel closer to nature than you would think, so don’t knock it until you try it. For Sloan, seeing different animals from our deck was just as exciting as seeing a buffalo from 100 yards away. To add to the experience, we lined up all of her stuffed animals in the window and let her “buy” a few, and we even printed off animal coloring pages to end our day at the zoo. The next one was going to be tricky, but I knew we could do more than a simple FaceTime to make the “family trip” feel more real. Having canceled our flights to Nashville, I decided to start at the airport and let Sloan pack her own bag which we carried out to the car. From there, we drove around the block while Reid called all of our family on Zoom and put it on the TV. By the time we got back, our family was gathered in the living room (which was rearranged for effect purposes) and Sloan had the time of her life talking to everyone at once.

Last but not least was our day at the community center—a.k.a our kitchen. I made three note cards that each had an image of an activity on it and let Sloan choose what order we did them in. First up was making muffins. We did everything on the floor and Sloan loved pouring the ingredients into a giant bowl and not-socarefully stirring them together. Next in line was unconventional art class. We moved to a different station in our kitchen and painted by rolling cars through different colors of paint. And even though I had blue wheel tracks running through my entire upstairs, it was so worth it to see Sloan’s wonder at what she created. The last class of the day was Archaeology 101.

Our dining room table was covered in dirt and Sloan dug with plastic spoons for fossils. Old toys make for a couple of great discoveries and I didn’t care if they got dirty. These are simple tasks. And some kids will think they are boring. And some of you are stuck at home with a 6-month-old that would benefit from none of these. But you all have kids that have had their worlds turned upside down and need guidance and inspiration. So take what you have available, think about what your child would enjoy, and look at things from the imagination of a child. You will be amazed at what you can create when you let yourself think like your kiddo. I know I was.

ose Ann Hofland works as the director of communications and community engagement for Levitt at the Falls. Falls . Though she is disheartened that she won’t get to experience the live performance energy of the outdoor music venue early in the season, she says she and the team are excited to give a taste of it via Facebook Live with Levitt in Your Living Room (more on pg. 11).
“THERE IS AN ENERGY AND A CONNECTION BETWEEN AUDIENCE AND PERFORMER IN
Hofland shared highlights from her career, her favorite artist to have stepped on the Levitt stage, and what brings her joy every day.
A LIVE EVENT, AND IT’S HARD TO CREATE THAT CONNECTION REMOTELY.”
5 QUESTIONS WITH HOFL AND WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF YOUR JOB?
WHO WAS YOUR FAVORITE ARTIST TO EVER COME TO LEVITT AT THE FALLS?
WHAT IS SOMETHING PEOPLE MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT YOU?
I’m so lucky to have a job where I work with amazing people; our Levitt team, board of directors, and volunteers are so committed and energized by our mission. They’re also really fun people. It makes going to work, even on long days in the sun, something that fills me up.
There are so many to choose from, and we’ve only had one season. I really loved Flor de Toloache, last year’s Levitt National tour. The group is a GRAMMY-winning, all-female mariachi band based in New York City who are constantly collaborating with other artists and bringing new takes to a traditional musical form. Mariachi is usually performed by men, so I loved that these women were embracing and challenging that assumption. Their harmonies are amazing and their ability to transcend language differences and connect with a live audience was really cool to see. They just came out with No Sigas (Don’t Speak)—a No Doubt cover that has been on my Spotify rotation this week.
Fun fact: I bake about 1,500 cookies every holiday season as a tradition passed on by my father. I plate and pack them up and then send them out to my family and friends. My cookies don’t hold a candle to Queen City Bakery’s cake, but I do what I can.
At the Levitt Shell, I get to help create positive moments of connection for people in our community through great art. Our work creates an opportunity for joy, relaxation, and a rare opportunity for people to naturally connect with their neighbors through a fantastic, free music experience. Getting to do work that results in people having such a great time and showing kindness to one another, while engaging in this beautiful joint experience is such a gift. I’m especially moved when we get to bring artists out into the community into classrooms, hospitals, and other places to reach people who might not have made it to the lawn yet. Those intimate moments of music and connection are magical.
WHAT IS SOMETHING SMALL THAT MAKES YOU SMILE?
My dog, Fozzie, is a bright spot every day. He is a rescued chow mix who looks a bit like a small lion and is very calm. It’s pretty great to see him sleep on our porch in the sun like a cat.

WHAT DO YOU MISS MOST ABOUT THE CORONAVIRUS-FREE WORLD?
I miss the theatre. The performing arts have been hit hard by this pandemic and have a long road to get back on their feet. I grew up being immersed in theatre and working with a group of others to tell a story has been an important part of my life for a long time. I look forward to when I can attend or be a part of a show again.

Dear Guests Over the past few weeks, all of our lives have been impacted by the global, national, and local spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). Having followed the recommendations of local and state health officials, we have now arrived at a place where we can begin to cautiously re-open and welcome guests back to our dining room. We have ramped up sanitization, increased spacing between tables, initiated new serving protocols, and will alter our days of operation to ensure that all of our guests and employees stay safe. As our dining room will have limited seating, we will require that everyone reserve ahead of time. We thank you for your patience and look forward to seeing you soon.
