Letter from the Publisher Thanks for picking up the inaugural issue of 605 Weddings! The team of 605 Magazine has been in the wedding publishing industry since 2012 with the Midwest publication and website, Dainty Obsessions. After much thought and with 605's growing readership throughout the state of South Dakota, it seemed like a perfect fit to rebrand as 605 Weddings.

type articles along with Dainty Obsessions content, like real weddings, engagement stories, color inspiration boards, and more. My jaw dropped when I arrived at Chef Jeni and Chef April's location to shoot their article. It was like literally walking into a full-on styled shoot with gorgeous florals, a giant dessert spread, and charcuterie platters people dream of. Easiest shoot of my life. (See more on page 66.)

There is something so honest and sweet about the Banff destination engagement shoot. Spontaneity and true love should always be at the forefront of engagement photos. (See more on page 48.)

For me it has been really special working with the team on the rebrand to 605 Weddings. We all worked together and are really proud of what we've created. Hope you love it just as much as we do!

Now known as Catering by Cleavers, the Sioux Falls-based catering service specializes in delivering gourmet food, providing quality service, and creating an unforgettable experience. “We meet with each couple to help create a menu specifically for them,” said Honke. “We have done everything from homestyle menus to upscale menus, and everything in between.” Such menus include some of Honke’s most popular dishes, like the Smoked Chicken with Boursin Cream Sauce. Another fan favorite is the Sous Vide New York Strip served with a choice of sauce, vegetable, and starch. “This is a chef-manned station where I stand at the end of the buffet and carve the New York strip to each guest's specifications,” said Honke. In addition to personalized reception menus, Catering by Cleavers also has a private hall couples can use for rehearsal dinners that can fit 55 people for a seated dinner and 75 for standing social engagements. Honke and his team are fully prepared for either situation with smaller dishes, like the Boursin Bacon Tomato Cups, to larger dishes, like the Smoked Coulette Slider. Being in the catering business 20 years, Honke realizes the importance of adhering to a couple’s budget without losing the quality in the company's food.

said Honke. “We are able to create their dream menu, keep within their budget, and do so in an easy and simple way.” Honke went on to explain that working with a catering company should also be fun, which is why he offers a free tasting to the soon-to-be newlyweds, giving them a chance to pick their menu by flavor and not just descriptions. “My advice to brides and grooms is to come meet with us,” said Honke. “We can work with anyone and any budget to make their dream day come true.” As far as reservations go? Honke urges couples to book as soon as possible, even if they don’t have the menu nailed down. Catering by Cleavers has already begun booking for 2022 weddings, and they don’t expect to slow down. “Since I am the owner and the main chef, I am on site for every event,” said Honke, “which is worth it when I see the quality we provide.”

would have done it the next day, but one week made me seem less eager, right?”

“We hiked in our wedding dresses/shoes through a muddy trail to get some of our favorite pictures from the whole day. It was awesome,” said Ashley.

After dating and a California proposal, the Sioux Falls couple made plans to get married in the Black Hills at the scenic Spearfish Canyon Lodge. “We really just wanted everything to be relaxed and easygoing with as little stress as possible,” said Ashley.

But their favorite part was seeing everyone come together. Ashley recalled, “We wanted to make sure we had time to share such a special moment with a close group of family and friends who had been there to support and love us as a couple.”

Detail highlights included wood rounds and baby’s breath for centerpieces, which Emily says felt simple and elegant.

The Power of Three GET READY, GET MARRIED, & GET PARTYING ALL IN ONE VENUE

Think about it—roll out of bed to start drinking mimosas with your wedding party. Then simply take the elevator down to the ceremony. Finally, grab an appetizer (and a kiss from your now husband or wife) and switch rooms for your reception. It could be that easy. Just ask Deb Trask from Holiday Inn Rapid City - Rushmore Plaza, who sees it all of the time. 605 Weddings chatted with Trask on why this streamlines the process, why ending the night in a hotel room with your significant other is a must, and what mistakes to avoid when getting ready for the big day.

Why do you recommend get ting ready at the venue where you’re get ting married?

If you’re not get ting married at a hotel, why is it important to get a hotel room for your wedding night?

Having a suite at your venue gives you an intimate space for all the moments before the ceremony. It’s a time for you to connect with your wedding party and family, whom you may not have seen in months. And if you have a large wedding party, you’ll want to make sure you have enough room for everyone. Your team of vendors will have an amazing space to work in and capture all these moments as you prepare.

Your first night as a married couple is so special. Having a hotel room or suite to come back to after your reception just completes the whole experience. Oftentimes, your suite can be a perk as part of contracting your guests' rooms.

What are the pros of having your ceremony and reception at the same venue? And also having your hotel room there as well?

Our Presidential Suite has a huge vanity and a second bathroom, so there is a lot of space to get ready. We work closely with our couples and wedding parties and make sure to freshen up the space during the ceremony and reception so you come back to a perfectly made-up space just for the two of you. Our catering department can prepare a light meal or tray to be waiting for you. Work with your hotel contact so your family or close friends can bring in any bags in advance for you and even check in for you.

We can offer our couples so many accommodations. Having your ceremony and reception at the same venue enables your guests to relax and enjoy themselves. Your loved ones won’t have to worry about driving or finding a way home. Not only this, but we can offer an amazing space for a gift opening brunch the next morning, so you can carry on the celebrations the following day!

What are some recommendations on how to have your hotel room set up for the wedding day/night?

6 0 5 W E D D I N G S . C O M \\\\\\\\\ 3 3

Sometimes wedding parties or friends surprise the couple and sneak into their hotel room to make it romantic for their wedding night. What have people done, and how do you recommend they sneak in? We have a lot of couples who trust their wedding party or moms to add those special touches. We've helped to add chilled champagne and chocolates to the suite. We make sure to talk about this with our couples during the planning process, and they let us know who should have access.

What are some mistakes people make when pl anning what to bring for get ting ready? Often, wedding parties forget extension cords or power strips, which can save the day with so many curling irons and hair dryers. Our front desk is a phone call away when this happens, and we can quickly run up what you need.

What is something super important that you should do/bring to get ready? Along with the power strips and extension cords, a wedding day emergency kit is the best invention ever. You never know when you will need an extra safety pin, nail glue, or a breath mint.

“We were flattered and excited to be selected to be in this co-op of Sioux Falls' finest wedding professionals,” said Jeremy. “We saw this as a great opportunity to network and as an opportunity to help our clients find other great wedding professionals when planning their wedding.” Other vendors are members, but are off location, like Amanda Nelson of Blue Haven Barn and Gardens. “We were attracted to the group because the members are all top level event professionals providing high quality services with high standards,” said Nelson. The group stresses the importance of collaboration, which Jeremy said is only possible with trust. “We trust one another to do what’s best for the client and all have their best interest at heart,” he said. “We have each other’s backs and are willing to help out to achieve the best results for our clients.” But Uptown Events wants couples to know there is no pressure to hire them all. Even if the couple hires just one vendor it’s no issue. Member Loghin Welch of Serendipitous Events said it’s great when they do get the chance to combine forces, though. “I personally love that we get to know each other so well that working together is so easy,” she said. “On wedding days, we know exactly what each person will be doing so we're confident nothing will be missed and our couples will be well taken care of. I think it is so important in the wedding industry to collaborate, because couples want a good, cohesive team that will be working their wedding." Jason Fuccello of Refractor Films joined the group in 2018 and said the best part of hiring any of them as wedding professionals is that each member has a solid background in the state (and some worldwide). “Uptown provides couples with confidence and comfort in knowing that everyone here has years of experience, is highly rated, and works flawlessly together,” he said.

Destination Engagement Story IMANI + JOHN DATE OF ENGAGEMENT: JULY 21, 2019 KRISTINE ELISABETH PHOTOGRAPHY

B

efore deciding to travel the world together, Imani and John met at Duke University.

“I WAS HOME FROM COLLEGE AND HAVING A PARTICULARLY ROUGH DAY, AND I IMMEDIATELY THOUGHT TO CALL JOHN” - IMANI

The outdoorsy couple quit their jobs and embarked on a period of extended travel in attempts to start a small business of customized travel itineraries.

“Perhaps not ‘forever,’ but as odd as this sounds, I had the feeling right after that this relationship was going to last a very long time,” said Imani.

“While we were beginning to plan this adventure, I realized that I couldn’t and didn’t want to do this with anyone else. I realized that Imani was the one,” said John.

This forever feeling turned into a promise when John proposed to Imani in Toronto.

For Imani, the realization came in a moment of comfort when John was the first person she thought to call during an anxiety attack. After he shared a story about sea lions, Imani knew.

The couple, who plans to wed in southeast Asia or Central America, shared the magical moments of their surprise engagement and spontaneous photo shoot.

Imani + John’s Top Advice for Engagement Sessions +

Be yourself! Location and clothing can be important, but we believe that the way you look at each other impacts the photos way more than how you're dressed or where the photo was taken.

+

Pick a place that fits your “couple style.” If you go hiking a lot, pick a hiking spot. But if you typically dress up nicely, put on heels and a dress for the shoot.

+

Pick the right photographer for you. After knowing us for just a few hours, Kristine was able to make us feel so comfortable and relaxed. Photo shoots can be a bit awkward if you’re not used to it, but if you have the right photographer, it can turn from awkward to extremely fun in a matter of seconds.

WHO PROPOSED AND HOW DID THEY DO IT? J: I proposed to Imani in Toronto. I had originally told Imani that I was going to propose to her sometime while we were traveling abroad next year or the following. I changed my mind, and I wanted to do it earlier so it would be a complete surprise. We have always loved to travel and this was our last trip before leaving Washington, D.C. I planned out a beautiful date. We had dinner at Blu Ristorante in Toronto. After dinner, we went to the Aga Khan Museum for sunset where I proposed to her.

WHAT DID YOU DO TO GET READY FOR YOUR ENGAGEMENT SESSION? J: To be honest, we didn't prepare for our engagement photo shoot with Kristine at all. We met serendipitously at the Lake Agnes Tea House in Banff. Kristine and her husband Josh had gone on the same hike that Imani and I had gone on. We got to talking and decided to spend the rest of the morning together.

5 2 \\\\\\\\\ 2 0 1 9

As we went our separate ways, we decided to meet up later at Emerald Lake where Kristine suggested we take some photos. The outfits were 100 percent practical; it was raining when we got to Emerald Lake, so we were wearing rain jackets and hiking clothes.

“THE WATER WAS PERFECTLY STILL, SO THERE WAS AN EPIC REFLECTION OF THE SURROUNDING MOUNTAINS, AND DUE TO THE RAIN, WE HAD THE LAKE TO OURSELVES.” - JOHN WHAT WAS A SPECIAL OR MEMORABLE MOMENT DURING YOUR ENGAGEMENT SHOOT? J: The shoot was full of special moments. We met the photographer at 6 p.m. and it rained consistently from 4 until 6. Right as we met up, the rain stopped, and there was a gorgeous rainbow. It was a surreal experience.•

A Sit-Down With:

Timeless Wedding & Event Rental

T

imeless Wedding & Event Rental has been a top source for any and every type of rentals in the Black Hills since 1971. The Rapid City family

owned and operated company is also known for innovative design and planning. 605 Weddings caught up with Miranda Boenisch (whose partner in crime is sister Mirissa Swaney) to see what’s trending, what goes into their (heavy-lifting) jobs, and what she’s

We’ve been involved in the rental business… essentially our entire lives! We’re a third-generation family business, and our grandparents opened Time Tool Rental in 1971, which rented contractor equipment and items for weddings and funerals. Both Mirissa and I have worked at the family business since high school and through college in one capacity or another. Since we started the event division, Timeless Wedding & Event Rentals in 2013, we’ve both been working primarily with weddings and events full time.

We’re known for renting… tents! From small festival tents to our new clear tent to huge tents for events of 400-plus guests. Additionally, we have the area's largest rental inventory of the event basics including tables, chairs, linens, and décor.

To set up a tent it usually takes… well, it depends on the size of the tent! Our tent crew is four to six people, and it can take anywhere from an hour for a 20-by-40 tent for a backyard BBQ to eight-plus hours for a big 60-by120 wedding tent. There’s a number of factors and variables that need to be considered, but our tent rental experts and our experienced tent crew can make sure everything is taken care of.

Top Advice For Rentals + Have a budget in mind, because renting is 100 percent budget friendly. We have so many options for rentals but we can best advise you when we know what you’re willing to spend. Sometimes, something as simple as pretty colored napkins can make a huge impact for a minimum amount of money. + Know the requirements and rules of your venue. Most event venues have set times for setup and tear down, so speak with your venue contact or your planner about those details and communicate them to us so we can make sure everything is up and down when it’s needed.

5 8 \\\\\\\\\ 2 0 1 9

+ When it comes to tents, remember that it may not be a cheaper option, because we are essentially building you a custom venue at a remote or unique location. We can certainly offer clients advice on how to work within a given budget, so again start with a budget and go from there.

What people don’t realize they can rent is… tableware. We have been

We have different rental /design st yles for every couple, like… very

growing our inventory of dishware, flatware, glasses, and we have everything from basic white buffet plates, decorative plates, fancy flatware, to wine and water goblets. We can rent them for big events or for your holiday party, and the best part is we take care of washing them when you’re done.

classic items such as table candelabras or white ceremony arbors to more unique and trendy things like a circle arbor and geometric shapes for centerpieces. We always take some time to get to know our clients, and if we’re working with them for planning and design, we create style boards so we know we’re on the right track with their theme and color palette.

A rental item we wished was utilized more is… tall centerpieces. Oftentimes people shy away from tall centerpieces because there’s a misconception that they will prevent guests from conversing across a table. We’ve not found this to be true at all, as long as it’s 29 inches or taller, and a tall floral centerpiece or a candelabra makes such an impact in an event space that really wows guests.

A couple of wedding/event trends we’re loving right now… are outdoor weddings, and that’s one trend that won’t be going anywhere in the beautiful Black Hills. One of our most popular rentals is our clear top tent and it’s such a beautiful sight to see it all lit up for a dance! Another trend we’re loving is fully set tables. Having full place settings makes tables so inviting, and it’s amazing how much beautiful decorative plates or a jewel-toned goblet impresses guests.

Something we would love to see in more weddings is… personal or original special touches that represent the couple’s unique personalities or interests. For example, we had a couple who flew airplanes, so their guest favors were little airplane bottle openers and their guestbook was a five-foot airplane propeller that people could sign. It was something that they were so excited about, and their guests really enjoyed the personal touch.

People should book their pl anner/rentals… as soon as the date is set! We book rentals and services on a first come first serve basis, so we recommend getting in touch with one of our wedding and event specialists right away!

When we’re not buried in weddings and rentals… we’re spending time with family. I have two daughters and Mirissa is a dog mom so, believe it or not, even though we work together, we enjoy going out in the Hills and spending time together.

Our favorite part about South Dakota weddings is… getting to work in beautiful locations in the Black Hills, Badlands, and surrounding prairies. From our tented weddings to many of the venues we work with, there is no lack of beauty in western South Dakota!

A Sweet (and Savory) Partnership: Chef Jeni & Chef April

One location. A combined 40-plus years of experience in weddings and events in Sioux Falls. 6 8 \\\\\\\\\ 2 0 1 9

“EVEN THOUGH WE HAD NEVER MET BEFORE, WE HAD HEARD OF EACH OTHER AND IMMEDIATELY BONDED ON OUR SMALL TOWN S.D. ROOTS, BEING ONLY ONE MONTH APART IN AGE, AND OUR LOVE FOR WORKING IN THE FOOD INDUSTRY.” -JENI “We both have been in the industry for over 20 years—April [Austin] as pastry chef at CJ Callaway’s, and myself with my business, Chef Jeni & Company,” said Jeni Thomas. After Callaway’s closed, Austin decided to open her own bakery business. She was on the search for her brick and mortar when she says she realized the potential of partnering up with Thomas and her space. “April and her realtor approached me with the idea of sharing my commercial kitchen and dining room,” said Thomas. “We didn’t really plan on collaborating and sharing a venue, but once we met we saw how well it would work.” Austin said, “It was fate and a lot of good luck that I found her.” The space on Southeastern Avenue is a kitchen and a dining space where patrons can have a private tasting or throw an event, like bridal showers, champagne brunches, corporate events, and more. Both companies use fresh ingredients, and Chef April is known for unique dessert designs, while Chef Jeni’s team is known for creative and customized menus. “We have incorporated family recipes into our wedding menus many times,” said Thomas. “Examples have been Grandma Varro’s Sicilian Sunday Gravy with spicy sausage and linguine for a family style entrée and Sebastian’s Grandpa’s Bao Char Siu as a signature appetizer. One of our couples had an Italian Millefoglie Cake on their engagement trip, so April and I collaborated to recreate it and assembled it at the wedding for all of the guests to watch.” While the entrepreneurs own two separate businesses under one roof, they say they enjoy working together on the day to day and for problem solving.

“We’re able to help each other with business challenges, new ideas and creative inspiration, and just having a friend in the kitchen,” said Thomas. “In our businesses, anything can happen—an employee can’t come in because of a sick child, a storm hits, the delivery truck is late, a guest informs you of an allergy at the last second. Since we’re both experienced, we can hop in and help each other make the deadline so the client never has to worry or even know what happens behind the scenes.” She continued, “We could tell you some crazy stories!” Some of the stories “behind the pipe and drape curtains” have included creating temporary kitchens in tents in open fields, dealing with detoured roads, last-minute time adjustments, and inclement weather. “No two events are ever the same, and we love it! We must be insane, but we love it,” laughed Thomas. Because both small companies are ranked as some of the best in the business, the duo say they’re selective with how many events they take on each year.

“We aren’t a huge company doing hundreds of events a month,” said Thomas. “We’re happy to focus on fewer events and make one customer happy at a time with spectacular food and attentive service staff.” Much like they enjoy getting to know their clients, Thomas and Austin say they’re happy to get to know and have one another. “We’re almost the same person. Engagement Story ALI + MICHAEL DATE OF ENGAGEMENT: FEBRUARY 16, 2019 MADDIE PESCHONG PHOTOGRAPHY

Though they were born and raised one mile away from one another, it took the Bumble app to bring together Ali and Michael of Sioux Falls. The couple closed down MacKenzie River on their first date, and they have been inseparable since. On a snowy February day, Michael asked Ali to go on a walk in McKennan Park and proposed to her down on one knee in the sunken gardens. “It was perfect and private,” said Ali. The couple shares their story, along with details of their sunset engagement session.

74 \\\\\\\\\ 2 0 1 9

WHEN WAS THE MOMENT YOU KNEW IT WAS “FOREVER”? Ali: There wasn’t a specific moment for me. Michael gradually became the person I wanted to have adventures with and tell my stories to. He accepts all of who I am and doesn’t try to change it. I can’t imagine spending my life with anyone else. Michael: Ali and I took a trip to the Northeast in September 2018. We spent an entire week together traveling, seeing new sites, and going on new adventures. Throughout the entire trip, there was not one moment where I was annoyed or tired of being with her. I enjoyed every minute we were together and knew that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her.

“ALI AND I BOTH LIVED IN SIOUX FALLS OUR ENTIRE LIVES, BUT NEVER CROSSED PATHS UNTIL WE BOTH SWIPED RIGHT ON BUMBLE.” - MICHAEL HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR WEDDING STYLE IN THREE WORDS? A: Classic, chic, and romantic.

HOW DID YOU PREPARE FOR YOUR ENGAGEMENT SHOOT? A: We were in the midst of the rainiest spring, so I was just praying that our day would be dry. We worked with our photographer, Maddie, and changed the date at the last minute to avoid a rainy day. The weekend before our shoot we scouted several possible locations around Sioux Falls just to see if we could find any dry land. We were so glad we did because some locations were completely underwater. It also made us more comfortable with the locations. I started looking for our outfits months before the shoot day. I picked classic pieces in the blue color family. I wanted us to complement each other without being too matchy-matchy. Going with a formal and casual option gave our photos some added variety.

DID ANYTHING RANDOM HAPPEN THAT YOU DIDN’T PLAN FOR? A: There were so many bugs! All the bug spray in the world couldn’t keep them away.

Michael + Ali’s Top Advice for Engagement Sessions +

Take the “Grandma shot.” We have to thank our photographer for making us take a picture where both of us are posed nicely, looking at the camera, and smiling. Our grandparents picked that image to frame.

+

Make a playlist. We had a dance party on the way to our locations, and it helped to get some of the nerves out.

WHAT WAS A SPECIAL MOMENT DURING YOUR ENGAGEMENT SHOOT?

+ Pack a snack. Michael got “hangry” during the shoot, and luckily I had a granola bar in my bag that kept him going.

A: We popped a bottle of Prosecco at the end of the shoot. It made for some cute photos, but it was also a way to celebrate us as a couple. We did our engagement shoot during the middle of our engagement. It was a great way to refocus during the midst of wedding planning and just really enjoy the moment.•

Newlyweds AT H O M E

HANNAH + TRAVIS Hannah and Travis met through work. Well, kind of. Hannah had a “Twitter crush” on him from afar until their paths crossed in real life. After a Facebook message and some conversation, the two have been inseparable since, celebrating their one-year marriage anniversary this past May and moving into a 1950s ranch home in central Sioux Falls. 605 Weddings caught up with the pair on how they met, what they’ve learned, and what they love most about one another. HOW DID YOU TWO MEET? Hannah: Before we met, I had a Twitter crush on Travis and had known of him for quite a while. We hung out in overlapping friend circles but never had the chance to connect. Then, I became Travis’ client when we were both working at marketing firms. Travis: We have similar interests, so we were always at the same type of events and ran in similar circles. Because I get scared of pretty girls, Hannah took the initiative and started talking to me via Facebook about something work related. And we've been talking ever since.

7 6 \\\\\\\\\ 2 0 1 9

WHEN DID YOU KNOW YOU WANTED TO BE TOGETHER FOREVER? WAS THERE A PARTICULAR MOMENT OR REASON THAT STOOD OUT? T: There wasn’t a particular moment, but I knew pretty quickly that I was going to marry that lady. Have you met her? There is no better human than her! H: The summer we started dating, I was longing to be near a body of water, which happens a lot since I grew up in Minnesota. When I mentioned this, Travis didn’t miss a beat and said, “Okay, let’s go!” We went on an impromptu camping trip, and we haven’t stopped traveling together.

“SHE MAKES EVERYTHING AROUND ME BETTER, AND I UNDERSTOOD THAT FAST.” WHAT WAS YOUR WEDDING DAY LIKE, AND WHAT WAS A FAVORITE MOMENT? H: It was hot. We got married on a record high-temp Memorial Day weekend. It was absolutely beautiful, though, and we had a huge group of family and friends surrounding us. One of my favorite moments was our outdoor ceremony. I felt it was perfectly tailored to us and our beliefs about life and love. T: What she said. And we had so many friends and family there to help us with the day, which made it perfect. It was quite lovely.

WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST PIECE OF ADVICE FOR PLANNING A WEDDING? H: Get someone to help you with day-of tasks and to-dos. I absolutely loved all of the planning and details of organizing a big event, but I couldn’t do it all, especially on the big day itself. Having someone dedicated to making sure all the little things went as smoothly as possible and having the peace of mind to just focus on being a bride was such a game changer. T: On that note, your friends also probably have skills that lend themselves to weddings (flowers, photographer, DJ, cakes). Ask them to help; I bet they’ll be happy to do so. Also, you’re not going to please every guest, so be confident in your decisions and remember the day is about you.

WHAT WAS YOUR LIVING SITUATION BEFORE MARRIAGE? WHEN DID YOU MOVE IN TOGETHER AND HOW DID IT DIFFER FROM LIVING AS A SINGLE PERSON? T: We lived in sin for a few years before getting married and I highly recommend it! You get to learn each other’s quirks and it brings you closer.

time to decompress from time to time, and telling the person you’re closest with that you need time alone is a bit of delicate conversation when you’re in the “honeymoon phase.”

WHAT WAS IT LIKE COMBINING YOUR THINGS? H: It came pretty naturally for us because we have a similar style and appreciate a certain sort of aesthetic. We ended up combining a lot at first when we were renting, and then we transitioned to new stuff we purchased together when we bought our first home. T: What Hannah said. We kept the best of each of our things, which matched our styles.

WHAT TIPS DO YOU HAVE FOR REGISTERING? WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE WEDDING GIFTS YOU USE/LOVE? H: Do a deep dive of what you actually own before getting click happy with the registry, and prioritize what you need new, what you’d like replaced, and recognize what you have that you can keep. T: If you’ve lived together for a bit and have your own stuff, good chances are you don’t need a lot of new things. Be okay with having categories people can donate to (honeymoon fund, travel fund, new house fund) or have custom/special items. We received handmade dishes from a local potter that will be in the family for years.

HOW HAS THE FIRST YEAR OF MARRIAGE GONE? WHAT WERE SOME HIGHLIGHTS? H: The first year of marriage went, just... fast. Highlights include purchasing a new home together and both of us starting not only new jobs, but brand new careers. We decided to go full steam ahead into some big life changes all at once, but I think having each other as a strong support system gave each of us the courage to take the leap of faith. T: I wouldn’t change it for anything. Marriage is pretty awesome; I highly recommend it.

H: Sharing a space with the person I love was, for me, the best sort of change. The one tricky part is I do need alone

6 0 5 W E D D I N G S . C O M \\\\\\\\\ 7 7

DID YOU GO ON A HONEYMOON? IF SO, WHAT DID YOU DO? H: We traveled to Barcelona, Spain. It was so lovely. We decided to take it easy and stay primarily in the city, which meant we could sleep in, wander around the romantic, old city neighborhood with no agenda, and take two-hour lunches complete with a bottle of wine. T: Beaches, old cathedrals, food, and wine. What else do you need?

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE THINGS ABOUT EACH OTHER? H: Travis is such a force of stability and steadiness. He is incredibly compassionate, and the lens through which he sees the world is uniquely positive and thoughtful. Also, he is the cook in our family, and I can’t tell you enough how much I appreciate that. T: Hannah is the most caring, kind-hearted, empathetic person I have ever met. She loves me unconditionally, and I’m forever grateful for her. The world needs more people like her. She also brings her harmonica to karaoke.

HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH ARGUMENTS? DO YOU FIGHT THE SAME?

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE THINGS TO DO WITH ONE ANOTHER? H: We love traveling and adventuring together. Being on the road with Travis is one of my favorite things. On the flip side, I also cherish slow and quiet Sunday mornings with both of us snuggled up on the coach with our pup reading and reflecting.

WHAT DO YOU DO APART? DO YOU HAVE HOBBIES YOU ENJOY OUTSIDE OF EACH OTHER? T: We both have outside hobbies that let us grow independently, which make us better partners. We don’t rely on the other person to fulfill every aspect of our lives, which was important for us to discuss before getting married. H: I play and teach piano. I do book club, he’s done Game of Thrones viewings. We definitely go our separate ways and are really comfortable and confident in doing so.

WHAT IS A BIG THING YOU'VE LEARNED AFTER YOUR FIRST YEAR OF MARRIAGE? H: Marriage, like anything, takes practice. Self-awareness and empathy is crucial. T: Be patient and take a second before your emotions get the better of you. And try to put yourself in your partner’s shoes.

T: It’s a constant learning experience. We continuously get better at expressing our feelings and opinions, which helps us navigate difficult situations. Most importantly, we understand that we’re on the same team.

YOU HAVE SOME BIG NEWS.

H: We’re learning that as we go. I think we’ve gotten better at not being afraid to argue, which is something that I struggle with.

T: Our child will rule the world!

7 8 \\\\\\\\\ 2 0 1 9

H: Baby E is due April 2020! We are absolutely over the moon to be parents.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN TO YOU GROWING AS A FAMILY? H: I think this means even more learning for us, especially seeing how we each approach our new roles as not only partners, but parents. It also means reliving some of our favorite childhood memories, but experiencing that joy and wonder as our new family. T: As long as can remember, all I really ever wanted was a family. What ’s in a Planner? WITH JENNIFER SAVAGE OF PL AN TO PART Y Photography by Cadey Reisner Weddings

Jennifer Savage of Emery has always been a planner. From dipping her toes into event planning in Colorado. to moving back to South Dakota, she has combined her experience and passion in the form of Plan to Party—a full service event planning company.

Where do you get your inspiration for pl anning and design?

Located in Lennox, Savage travels all over, working with couples on creating their unique day. 605 Weddings chatted with the entrepreneur on planner misconceptions, the latest trends, and how she “runs on praise and Diet Coke.”

Where to start? The benefits are different for each couple, because each wedding is unique, but there are a few biggies that apply to every wedding. From helping to keep the wedding on a budget to making sure that you have reliable, quality vendors who will deliver what they promise are just a few benefits of working with a planner. Planners live and breathe wedding details, so when a bride tells me that she is stressing about forgetting something or missing an important detail, I can assure her that with me on her side, nothing will slip through the cracks.

8 6 \\\\\\\\\ 2 0 1 9

It always starts with what the couple is dreaming of and envisioning. From there, I look to make a perfect combination of details that are unique to them, but still timeless. I don’t want them to look back in five or 10 years and hate the style of their day. I also am a strong believer in simple statement items that won’t break the budget, but instead deliver a big bang for the buck.

For those who are unsure, what are the benefits of having a wedding pl anner?

What are some of the biggest misconceptions about wedding pl anners?

What do you love most about working with weddings?

I think two biggies are that a planner will “take over” your wedding. If we wanted to just “take over” and make your wedding into our dream, every wedding we did would end up the same, and that would be so boring.

Literally, everything. It sounds cliché, but no matter how many weddings I do, when the bride starts down the aisle, I get teary. I’m also an unashamed people pleaser, so serving others is truly a joy for me. I joke to my husband that I need a shirt saying, “I run on praise and Diet Coke.” Helping my couples and those close to them fully enjoy their special day without worry is incredibly fulfilling to me.

Assuming that you can’t afford a wedding planner is another huge misconception. A better question is how can you afford not to hire a planner? As an example, you spend thousands on a DJ or photographer or venue or catering, only to find out that they have a horrible reputation or don’t uphold their contract or don’t show up on your day. If you had invested in partnering with a planner, not only would we have directed you to the best vendors for your budget, we would also have be your advocate to ensure that you got exactly what you paid for. In many cases, I have saved my couples enough money to pay for myself.

TIPS FOR BOOKING A PL ANNER

What was a moment where your emergencypl anning skills came into pl ay during an event?

What was a moment that stood out for you during a wedding? One of my favorite moments was just recently when I had the opportunity to help pull off a surprise for my bride. Her mom and I worked to organize a balloon drop during her first dance. Pulling the cord to drop those balloons and seeing her face full of such excitement and joy was a goosebump moment that I won’t ever forget.

+

DON’T JUST PRICE SHOP. If you're considering hiring a planner, sit down for coffee with one. There is so much value in investing in a planner that it is impossible to quantify it with just a sticker price.

+

MEET WITH AT LEAST TWO DIFFERENT PLANNERS. Just like every wedding is unique,

There is a moment in every wedding where I have a chance to step up and catch a problem before it becomes a disaster. Some past examples are pulling together a last minute bridesmaid bouquet, stepping in when the venue informed us that they didn’t have as many chairs as promised, adjusting plans to accommodate weather (extreme heat, wind, rain, and bouquet-killing cold temps, to name a few), tracking down a back-up makeup artist, sewing a bridesmaid into her dress, and washing 250 chargers by hand the night before the wedding!

+

ENSURE YOU’RE HIRING A PROFESSIONAL. Make sure that your planner is legitimate with references, reviews, and reliability. One of my brides thought she had a day-of coordinator hired from Facebook, only to have the planner disappear a month before her wedding.

each of us has our own specialty and will speak to different couples.

OLIVE&GRACE FLORAL COMPANY

OLIVEANDGRACEFLORAL.COM | @OLIVEANDGRACE.CO

What is a wedding/event trend you’re loving right now? I’m actually loving the fact that there really are no rules anymore. Pancakes instead of a wedding cake? Go for it! Bridesmaids all in mix-and-match dresses? Heck yes! Some of my other favorite trends right now are the super small, intimate weddings where couples are indulging in their favorite things because they have the budget freedom to do so with a small guest count. I’m also always going to be an advocate of focusing on guest enjoyment, and I see more and more couples looking to really host an incredible celebration instead of sacrificing guest experience for other details (example: cutting out favors to spend on great food).

What is your favorite part about pl anning weddings in South Dakota? My favorite thing about South Dakota weddings are the amazing people. Not only do the vendors deeply care about serving their couples, but my couples are so kind, loving, and giving to their friends and family who come out to celebrate with them.

When did you get into photography and when did you know you wanted to start a business?

While Patricia “Patty” Solis is a Midwest photographer, she shares her talents with Solis Photography worldwide. It’s not a surprise as this “professional coffee drinker” and “devoted pasta lover” was born in Spain and fell in love with her craft while studying in Sweden. 605 Weddings caught up with Patty on her favorite places in South Dakota, her wedding photography style, and her recent rebrand.

In 2011, after years of taking photos for myself as a hobby, I invested in my first professional camera and started my business. Little did I know that would be the start of my wonderful journey through the “American dream!” I photographed my first solo wedding in 2012. I loved the experience, the romance, and the beauty of the moment. That year I booked three more weddings. By 2013, three weddings turned into eight, eight turned into 15 in 2014, and so on. I have discovered a lot about myself on this journey. My style has changed over time, and I’ve gained experience and improved my skills, but one thing remains the same: I want to give my couples memories that will last more than a lifetime!

What is your st yle with photography and working with couples? I define myself with three words: Romantic, Real, and You. My style is light, airy and timeless. I like to capture the colors as they are, as my brides want to remember them. I help my couples pose during the shoot, of course, but I like to give them time to be themselves, too—to be real. Aperfect combination of posed and candid photos is what everyone should have on their wedding day.

Tell us about your recent rebrand. During the last eight years, I have grown a lot, personally and professionally. My style, equipment and ways to do shoots have evolved with every wedding I have done. I am not the same person that I was eight years ago. I am a mom now, and I have more experience. I felt that it was time for my brand to mature, too. My ideal client has also changed. Year after year, I have been attracting a very specific kind of bride, and my business needed to reflect all that change. I tried to include parts of my childhood in it. The olive tree [in the logo] is a symbol of my region in Spain. The leaves represent the members of my family. Everything about this new brand is a reflection of me and my world.

You have a free wedding pl anning guide on your website. Tell us about that. During my time as a wedding photographer, there are always questions that my couples ask me, and they keep surprising me with new ones over the years. I realized that it was time for me to give them those answers before they even met me. So I put those questions all together in a free guide anyone can download from my website.

6 0 5 W E D D I N G S . C O M \\\\\\\\\ 9 3

What is one of your favorite moments shooting weddings? I am a hopeless romantic, so I love the portraits of the couple. Having those 20 to 30 minutes alone with them to capture their true love is my favorite part of the day. Give me a couple in love, a wedding dress and good sunset light, and I am in heaven!

Do you have any habits/ traditions when you shoot weddings, like shots that are really important to you or something you like to do with couples? I take the time to get to know my couples and be sure we are a perfect fit. I make a point of it. I am in contact with them during the planning. They text me. They call me. I send them personal notes. I even have inside jokes with them. I work with them before the big day and try to learn as much as I can about the kind of people they are. This helps tremendously on their wedding day. How comfortable they feel when they see me arrive the morning of is totally reflected in their pictures. I also never start a wedding day without stopping at Starbucks first. This is just tradition!

What is your favorite part about shooting in South Dakota? The light and the seasons are the best. We have incredible light to work with in South Dakota, and the same location changes drastically with every season. I just love it.

Tell us about your travels and some shoots you’ve done outside of the Midwest. Traveling is one of my biggest pleasures, and in the last few years, I have been lucky enough to have couples give me the opportunity to capture love stories not only in the Midwest, but in many other places as well. This year, Paris and Cuba have been the cherry on top of my ice cream, and I already have Mexico and London waiting for me in 2020. My bucket list of ideal locations goes pretty much worldwide, so I am excited to keep going. My passport is always ready!

T O P A DV I C E F O R B O O K I N G A PHOTOGRAPHER + Choose your photographer based on style, quality, and experience, not pricing. Your memories are in their hands, and once the wedding is over, that is all that is left. + + Meet with them and be sure your personalities actually fit. You are going to spend a very stressful day with your photographer. It would be a disaster if they just add more stress to that, don’t you think?

What are some of your favorite pl aces in South Dakota for dining or for entertainment? My husband and I are crazy about food! We try to go to a new restaurant every time we can, but overall, we love Parker’s Bistro and MacKenzie River [Pizza] in downtown Sioux Falls.

What’s something in weddings you wish you saw more of? Rentals! There are many companies in town and online that would rent anything you need for your wedding day, from real china to decorations. They drop it off and then pick it up! They look very high end and photograph beautifully. I really think couples should stop by these places before setting foot in a craft store and save themselves many hours of labor.

What are some wedding trends you’re loving right now? It looks like 2020 keeps going with the trend of loose, garden-style bouquets with a touch of greenery, and I am in heaven. I am a floral nerd and always push my couples to get real flowers on their big day. So for me, the bigger the bouquet, the better!

Engagement Story KELCY + RILEY DATE OF ENGAGEMENT: NOVEMBER 16, 2017 GLASSER IMAGES Riley swept Kelcy off her feet (almost quite literally) when they met at a bar

WHO PROPOSED AND HOW DID THEY DO IT?

the day before Valentine’s Day in 2015. “Some guy was badgering me at the bar and Riley swooped in and rescued me,” she reminisced. “He's been sweeping me off my feet ever since.” When asked when they knew they wanted to marry one another, Kelcy gave an answer that could turn anyone into a romantic. “For me, there was never a ‘moment.’ We met and he just seemed so familiar,” she said. “You know that feeling of relief when you finally find a familiar face in a crowd? He was that feeling.” The pair, who wed in Wayne, Neb. in 2018, shared their engagement story, along with tips for other couples who are planning their engagement session.

1 0 4 \\\\\\\\\ 2 0 1 9

Kelcy: Every year, starting around Thanksgiving time, my hometown [Pierre] has a huge Christmas tree display. Riley had it all planned out with my family to propose to me while we were looking at all of the trees. My sister was going to take pictures, all of the family would be there… it was going to be so romantic and sweet. However, about a week before this was all going to go down, we had his niece over for supper. I was joking with her about her new boyfriend and how I hoped he put a ring on it sooner than Riley since he was seemingly never going to ask me. Riley scoffed and asked, "Do you want me to propose right now then?" I sarcastically said, "Oh yeah, go grab the ring!" Next thing I knew, he was down on one knee!

“I FELT MORE MYSELF WHEN [RILEY] WAS AROUND; NOTHING WAS FORCED OR FAKED OR RUSHED… WE WERE JUST TOGETHER. THAT WAS IT. AND I KNEW I WANTED THAT FEELING FOREVER.” - KELCY

WHAT DID YOU DO TO GET READY FOR YOUR ENGAGEMENT SESSION? K: Spring in South Dakota is always a crapshoot, so we had outfits picked out for both cold and warm temperatures. I more than anything wanted to make sure we looked like ourselves.

WHAT WAS A SPECIAL OR MEMORABLE MOMENT DURING YOUR SHOOT? K: Honestly the whole thing was just genuinely so fun. In my head I had imagined this very 1980s-esque “sit-and-pose-and-turnand-smile” thing, but honestly Jenna just let us be ourselves, made us laugh, and caught the moments in between.

Kelcy + Riley’s Top Advice for Engagement Sessions + Chat with your photographer beforehand. Jenna of Glasser Images was so helpful before we even did our session. She got a feel for our vibe as a couple, and was more than willing to answer any questions or concerns we had.

+ Forget about trying to be perfect or do that picture you saw on Pinterest. Just relax, have fun, and focus on each other and how in love you are!

+ Have fun. Riley and I turned the whole day into a date, which helped make the session that much more fun and romantic.

DID ANYTHING RANDOM HAPPEN THAT YOU DIDN’T PLAN FOR? K: Jenna made us stand on a cliff while she took a picture from the safety of a bridge. The end results were amazing, though, so the 10 minutes of panic were worth it.•

Engagement Story CAHRI + DUSTIN DATE OF ENGAGEMENT: JANUARY 13, 2019 STUDIO LB Cahri and Dustin both started new jobs at Biolife in Fargo, N.D. in 2011. On their first day, stuck in a tiny conference room, the couple got to know each other even though they were supposed to be reading through policies. Eight years later, Dustin proposed to Cahri on an ice fishing trip to Lake Audubon with Dustin’s parents. “I quickly reeled up the line, and to my surprise it was a big, plastic, diamond ring,” said Cahri. The couple shared their story, along with details of their engagement session in the Black Hills.

1 1 6 \\\\\\\\\ 2 0 1 9

WHAT WERE YOU DOING THE DAY DUSTIN PROPOSED? Cahri: Dustin and I decided to go ice fishing with his parents. However, he had to do a little convincing to get me to go. I was in the mood to stay snuggled up by the fire at home!

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR WEDDING STYLE IN THREE WORDS? C: Classy, simple, and rustic.

Cahri + Dustin’s Top Advice for Engagement Sessions + Don’t plan a ton of outfit changes. We just had two different outfits and that was perfect. +

Check the weather beforehand.

+ Don’t be nervous! Go into the session having fun and being yourselves.

“EVERY TIME WE WERE TOGETHER OR TALKED, WE GREW CLOSER. EVERYTHING FELT SO RIGHT AND JUST FELL INTO PLACE.” - CAHRI HOW DID YOU PREPARE FOR YOUR ENGAGEMENT SHOOT? C: I chose my outfits first and then we picked out Dustin’s to match. Of course it only took him about five minutes to choose his outfits. It was winter, so we dressed pretty warm, but we definitely did not prepare for how cold it actually was. Good thing our photographer came prepared and brought hand and boot warmers for us!

WHAT WAS A SPECIAL MOMENT DURING YOUR SHOOT? C: Well, I think the cold weather was our silver lining that day, because it turns out that trying to keep each other warm makes for some pretty nice pictures. It was also pretty memorable that we were taking our engagement pictures on frozen lakes (Sylvan Lake and Stockade Lake) because we got engaged on a frozen lake.•
