As one of the nation’s strongest community banks, First PREMIER Bank understands the excitement and challenges of buying a home for the first time. As a South Dakota Housing approved lender, we have access to an array of affordable housing solutions and money-saving programs to fit your financial situation.
Just a few interest points can mean thousands of dollars over the life of a home loan. The team at First PREMIER can help you understand your options and see what programs you may qualify for. We recognize getting a home loan can be overwhelming and we’re committed to being by your side from application to close.
All our lending decisions are made locally, and we’re committed to providing personal, responsive service throughout. We also believe in the power of community, supporting nearly 700 organizations, non-profits and events with our time and resources.

Learn more and start your application at
firstpremier.com/home
First PREMIER is committed to helping you find the right financing to make your first home happen. We work hard to make the process as smooth as possible. Once we’ve approved your application and started processing your home loan, follow these first-timer tips to prevent hassles, hang-ups or added stress.
Avoid quitting your job, becoming selfemployed or changing employers. Steady employment is critical to securing a home loan. Most lenders require two years at one job. Switching employers mid-process may delay your home.
Don’t fall behind on any of your current payments. Your payment history makes up more than one-third of your credit score. Just one late payment before closing could sink the deal.
Don’t finance new cars, furniture, flooring or any other major purchases. Your debt-toincome (DTI) ratio is a significant factor when considering your qualification level. If you add more debt during the process, it could affect your terms. Additional credit checks may also negatively impact your credit score, potentially changing your rate and loan eligibility.
Avoid spending your savings. Unless you do a First-Time Homebuyer loan or have negotiated with the seller, your down payment and closing costs won’t be covered in your loan. You may need your savings to help cover these costs on closing day. 1 2 3 4
For many children, the magic of fairy tales is confined to books. But for kids in South Dakota, a locally owned company is literally bringing storybook magic to life.
Simply Ever After Entertainment , headquartered in Sioux Falls, takes that magic a step further, transforming dreams into reality by bringing beloved characters to parties and events.
Founded in 2015 by Lindsay Lindaman, Simply Ever After has become a cherished part of the community and the business owner's life.
“I’ve always been a creative theatertype person, and when a friend
brought me the idea after hearing about it on the radio, I thought, ‘Could I do this?’” shared Lindaman.
Lindaman has always been passionate about reading and storytelling throughout her life, so this venture was right up her alley.
“I started researching costumes and wigs right away,” said Lindaman. “Simply Ever After was created on a whim, but it became something special.”
Simply Ever After Entertainment has a set goal of bringing joy to children and their parents, as well as teaching them the lessons of fairy tales and superheroes: To be kind and have courage.
Written by Gabby Sudenga + Photos by John SnyderAs a full-time art teacher, Lindaman strives to see the future world prioritizing those traits.
“If we can put on a great performance and influence others to be kind, I feel I’m fulfilling my purpose,” revealed Lindaman.
As the owner of her business, Lindaman wears many hats—working as the wig stylist, photographer, secretary, business manager, and scheduler.
“I handle all communications, pack the gifts, make the princess certificates, and hand-wash the laundry,” said Lindaman.
On top of her various roles, Lindaman creates and sews all of her characters’ custom costumes.
“Our costumes and wigs are very important to what I’ve curated here with Simply Ever After Entertainment,” stated Lindaman. “You won’t find a character in a costume from Amazon or a Halloween store.”
She adds that each piece is meticulously chosen to aid in the character's representation, as their stories are important.
Lindaman’s costuming goal is twofold—making something she’s proud of and making her performers comfortable and feel like royalty.
“I’m an art teacher. Constructing things has always been something I was naturally gifted at from a very young age.”
- Lindsay Lindaman

“My performers are incredible people,” expressed Lindaman. “If they don’t feel like the character in what they’re wearing, then I’m doing something wrong. Their confidence and comfort matters to me greatly.”
For performers, Lindaman has recruited a lineup of local entertainers who share her mission of bringing joy to children. With their help, the company is continuing to flourish.
“Our cast is made up of men and women who are teachers, occupational therapists, theater instructors, voice teachers, and all sorts of professions that cater to kids,” shared Lindaman.
The group of actors are additionally trained by Lindaman, learning how to transform and embody the characters.
The performers learn to master the character's mannerisms, voice, and appearance, ensuring that every interaction feels like stepping into the pages of a storybook.
From intricate costumes and makeup, to engaging performances and interactive storytelling, no detail is overlooked in creating an immersive experience.
“I can’t help but remember a party where we had a princess walk into a client’s home & the birthday girl screamed & ran to her room to grab a t-shirt that had our princess on it.
She exclaimed how she looked the same, & so she had to be the real deal!”
Simply Ever After carries a wide collection of 35 characters for parents to choose from, including princesses, superheroes, and pop culture figures.
For those interested in booking, Lindaman suggests visiting the business’s website to solidify their choices. The characters are primarily booked for birthday parties, but are also available for corporate events.
Simply Ever After offers six party packages to choose from: Princess Parties, Superhero Parties, Galaxy Parties, Wizarding Parties, Super Plumber Parties, and Tea Parties Each package includes the character's attendance, a storytime session, games, and character-specific activities and lessons.
For a special treat, birthday kids will receive either a Coronation Ceremony or Superhero Training, teaching the children the ways of a princess or superhero. Lindaman shares that the child gets to keep their gifted certificate or crown, with parties that are an hour or longer.
The Tea Party package is Simply Ever After’s largest package.
“We bring the treats, lemonade, crafts, and teach etiquette lessons,” added Lindaman. “It’s a great package for parents who want to be a little more hands-off for the duration of the party.”
During the team's attendance at the event, Lindaman notes that they have everything under control.
“Parents won’t need to lift a finger,” she said.
Choosing Simply Ever After ensures parents will receive their child's favorite character and that they will be treated like royalty.
“Our performers know kids and know how to adapt,” added Lindaman. “Kids and parents should expect the real deal walking through their door, and they should know that we’re there to have a great time with them.”
For the past nine years, Lindaman has been creating lasting memories for her clients. And while she admits it’s hard work to keep up with all of her responsibilities, she says she wouldn’t trade it for the world.
“There’s a moment when the door opens and the kids see their favorite character and they start screaming the character’s name with so much excitement—it’s so special,” said Lindaman. “You can’t help but smile when that happens.”
In moments like this, Lindaman relies on a quote: “With great power comes great responsibility.”
“I feel that responsibility every day with every request,” she shared. “I have a responsibility to bring joy, and the fact that I can bring that joy and that I even have this opportunity is the most rewarding thing I can think of. We all need a little more joy.”
“I want people to know that we genuinely want to give you the best experience possible.”
- Lindsay Lindaman
Nestled amidst the beauty of the Black Hills lies a unique opportunity for young aspiring performers—the BHP Jr. Performing Arts Camp—an outreach of the Black Hills Playhouse
This vibrant camp, set against the backdrop of nature’s grandeur, offers a nurturing environment where children can unleash their creativity, hone their theatrical skills, and forge lasting friendships.
“The camps started in 2016, and we wanted to give the kids in this region the opportunity to do a more intense study of theater while experiencing nature,” stated education director Deb Workman
The junior camp aims to foster creativity, build confidence, and ignite a lifelong passion for the performing arts.
Throughout the week-long sleepaway camp, students will act, sing, dance, and rehearse this year's chosen musical, Frozen JR.
“This camp will culminate into a performance,” said Jack Bledsoe, education program coordinator. “We go through an entire production process in the forest, which is a lot of fun.”
The BHP Junior Camps cater to different age groups, providing age-appropriate instruction and performance opportunities.
Written by Gabby Sudenga + Photos by John SnyderThe 5th-8th Grade Camp focuses on building fundamental theater skills and fostering a love for the stage. Campers can explore all aspects of performing arts in a supportive environment.
These campers will be allowed to develop their acting, dancing, and singing skills through hands-on activities, rehearsals, and performances.
The 8th-12th Grade Camp is designed for those looking to dive deeper into the theater world. These campers delve deeper into acting, singing, dancing, and technical theater.
“For those not looking to be on stage, the technical theater track is perfect,” said Workman.
Campers have the option to help with lights, sound, costume work, stage management, and things that are on the behind-the-scenes track.
“We want to show these kids that every part is important, and show the joy of theater in different ways,” added Workman. “It presents a new set of opportunities.”
The older campers will dig deeper into the creative process and go beyond the page.
“The
camp is equipped with so many areas for small, medium, or large groups.”

Here are a few of the original & licensed works the BHP Jr. Performing Arts Camps have previously performed:
• The Broadway Junior Revue
• Cinderella
• The Creepy Kooky Cabaret
On-site classes and rehearsals encourage the actors to explore their range, pushing their boundaries and honing their talents.
Campers will learn from experienced theater professionals who enthusiastically share their knowledge and expertise. These dedicated mentors help campers develop their skills, gain confidence, and discover new possibilities within themselves.
Workman, Bledsoe, and their staff aim to keep a low-pressure environment, as theater can be daunting for those who have never experienced being on stage.
“We’re meeting kids where they’re at with their skill sets,” explained Bledsoe. “We have beginner performers to advanced performers, so we try to cater the camp to make everyone feel comfortable.”
Each camp begins with ice-breakers, gettingto-know-you activities, and learning the show material before auditions.
“We try to allow the campers to get to know us before we dive into auditions because they can be intimidating, especially if it’s their first time,” shared Bledsoe.
After the cast list is announced, the campers hit the ground running.
When they’re not rehearsing, campers and counselors take advantage of the nature surrounding them.
• Footloose
• Mystery of Crimson House
• Nifty Fifties Variety Showcase
• Oklahoma at Placerville
• Rocking Robinhood
• Zoomaway Camp
“We close off an ample amount of time to explore, take guided hikes, and do camplike activities,” said Bledsoe.
He added, “It’s cool to see the mixture of their time where they get to choose what they do, and the time they’re in rehearsals to see the different ways they express themselves creatively.”
For the junior camp, the emphasis is not just on theatrical performances, but also on holistic development.
“When campers arrive, they turn in their phones, allowing us all to connect by talking and looking at each other,” said Workman. “When you add that unplugging and connection, the creativity is amazing.”
The Black Hills Playhouse is also deeply committed to creating a safe and welcoming space for all campers. Their emphasis on inclusion ensures every child feels valued, respected, and encouraged to express themselves freely on and off stage.
“From the moment they enter camp, we let kids know that it’s a safe environment and we accept them, no matter what,” expressed Workman. “We also show them what that looks like from each other and when you provide that safety of, ‘You can be you, and that’s awesome.’”
“All of our programs feed into what we do at the Black Hills Playhouse.”
Deb Workman
“With the balance of camp and the arts there are so many creative outlets and choices for the kids, and we honor those choices,” added Bledsoe.
“By not having phones, nothing is going to be documented—in the best way,” explained Workman. “If they mess up or try new things, it’s not going to be in a picture or video that can be released.”
Beyond the thrill of performing on stage, the junior camp provides a supportive community where lifelong friendships are forged. Campers collaborate, support, and inspire one another, creating bonds that endure far beyond the duration of camp.
Workman notes many alumni have fondly recalled memories and friendships they formed at camp, cherishing them as treasures of their childhood.
“It blows me away what’s coming out of this camp,” said Workman.
Each camp session culminates in an exciting final performance, where campers work together to bring a beloved production to life and showcase their hard work and growth.
“It’s always a blast,” said Bledsoe.
Along Main Street in Dell Rapids stands Pinz—a local bowling alley offering a fun-filled experience for families and friends.
Established in 1960, Pinz entered a new chapter in September 2022 under the ownership of Casey McCoy.
McCoy never expected to own a bowling alley, though.
“The mother of the previous owners approached me and asked if I was interested in taking over,” shared McCoy. “I had seen they had it on sale on Facebook, but didn’t put too much thought into it, as I wasn’t at a stage in my life where I could jump back into this type of thing.”
Previously, McCoy—a trained chef—had been a part of 15 grand openings, serving as the general manager or executive chef.
“This would be the first time I would be the owner,” he recalled.
After that visit, McCoy pondered the offer more, and then twoand-a-half weeks later he signed the purchase agreement.
McCoy has a mission to enhance the bowling experience, while staying true to Pinz’s classic charm.
“I want to keep it as a place for kids—that’s important to me,” stated McCoy. “Overall, the energy of the kids and the guests who continue to come in revitalizes us.”
“We want to take care of you like family.”
On a sunny Wednesday afternoon, Cailyn Patterson, lead multimedia designer and photographer, Greta Smith, sales and account manager, and I made the drive to visit the Pinz family.
Upon entering the small town bowling alley, the 605 team was greeted with a heartwarming, handwritten sign stating, “Pinz Welcomes 605 Magazine.”
From that moment on, the girls and I knew it was going to be a memorable visit.
McCoy greeted us with eagerness—ready to share his story and what Pinz is known for.
“We’re not a traditional bowling alley,” shared McCoy. “We’re trying to reinvent the image of what a bowling alley can be.”
Pinz boasts eight original wood lanes that are meticulously maintained by the staff.
McCoy shares that they proudly stand as one of few establishments in the area to preserve the timeless tradition.
But Pinz isn’t stuck in the past. The new ownership has expanded the business to be paired with an arcade, axe throwing, pinball, and casino dubbed Lottery Lane.
While I was conducting my interview with McCoy, Patterson and Smith headed downstairs to get their game on—specifically in pinball.
McCoy says one thing that truly sets Pinz apart from other bowling alleys is its commitment to a new culinary experience. The food menu focuses on going beyond typical bowling alley dishes with fresh and local ingredients.
“We make so many of our offerings in-house,” shared McCoy.
McCoy presented us with a spread of his most popular dishes: Bacon Jalapeño Wontons, the Gutter Ball Sandwich, Smothered Chicken, Sweet Potato Fries with a signature toasted marshmallow dip, and Bread Pudding
As we dove into the dishes, we quickly discovered the sweet potato fries and bread pudding were our favorites.
McCoy also shared a culinary secret with the team that he uses in the crowd favorite, Gutter Balls —otherwise known as meatballs.
Instead of making meatballs with breadcrumbs, the chef uses unsweetened pancake mix.
“Other popular menu items are our Chislic Brooklyn Basket, Five Bagger Fire Burger, our salad bar, and our buffets,” shared McCoy.
As for ingredients, Pinz uses an abundance of locally-sourced ingredients.
“All of our meat is cut from the county fair, and during the summer we get all of our vegetables from the farmers’ market,” said McCoy. “With us making things in-house, it’s easier to incorporate local ingredients.”
To make sure they’re using the best products at their peak times, McCoy changes the variation of his menus.
“The menu can get boring after a while,” he said with a laugh. “This is our fourth variation in a year and a half, because I want to keep it fresh.”

Pinz is a community member of the Sioux Metro Growth Alliance. For more community members, visit siouxmetro.com.
Pinz aims to be more than just a place to bowl. McCoy envisions it as a community hub—a place for families and friends to gather, enjoy good food, and create lasting memories.
“We don’t sell bowling, we don’t sell food. We sell experiences,” said McCoy. “I think it’s hard to leave here unhappy.”
McCoy expresses his business focuses on family, and anyone who visits immediately is welcomed into the Pinz Family.
“We want to continue to be a place for families to hang out,” said McCoy. “Family means everything to me, so I hope that we can continue to be that place.”
That mentality also extends to the staff.
“The culture here is family,” stated McCoy. “I always tell my staff that I’ll always be there for them.”
As we finished up our meals, McCoy introduced us to his son, Radley, who in McCoy’s words, has become a “bowling expert.”
The 1-and-a-half-year-old showcased his bowling skills before Pinz employee Craig Tiezen took us all on a behind-the-scenes adventure to see how the lanes operate.
Patterson, Smith, and I didn’t know what to expect, but to say we were fascinated is an understatement.

Located in the heart of Hill City is a destination market experience with The Pack Mule Provisions & Grocery
This establishment goes beyond the typical aisles of packaged goods, offering a curated selection of regional specialties and artisanal products.
“We’re aiming to fill a niche on this side of the state that has been left unattended in the grocery area,” said owner Benjamin Klinkel
Klinkel, who is a chef and entrepreneur, is known for unique culinary experiences in South Dakota with Rapid City’s high-end Delmonico Grill, Tally’s Silver Spoon, and Rockerville’s casual dining, The Gaslight Dining Saloon.
The Pack Mule has taken on the genre of the Old West, paying homage to the pioneering spirit that fits in the Black Hills. Its logo features a mule with a lazy ear draped in a burlap sack who, as Klinkel says, is ready to take a load down the Oregon Trail
The atmosphere mingles the charm of the Midwest with the elegance of big-city living.
“Imagine something like Trader Joe's meets Sur La Table,” shared Klinkel.
Written by Gabby Sudenga + Photos by John SnyderSituated under McGregor & Main on Main Street, The Pack Mule is a neighborhood anchor for visitors and locals alike.
“The smaller populations don’t have what larger cities have,” said Klinkel. “Now you don’t have to go too far outside of your neighborhood to get all of the things you need.”
The convenient location allows vacationers to easily stock up for their stay, while locals can discover unique finds and support producers.
“We want to be a one-stop shop for everyone,” said Klinkel.
The Pack Mule’s shelves are stocked with a diverse array of products, from locally-sourced meats and cheeses to artisanal breads, and more.
Customers can peruse different sections, from fresh produce to household essentials.
The General Store features departments of common items and unique culinary staples. In the produce department, patrons can find seasonal everyday staples sourced from local and regional farmers. The butcher department features an array of cut-to-order meats, including beef, buffalo, and Hutterite chicken.
“We’re broadening the scope of artisan things that are available to people at home and in restaurants in and around the Black Hills.”
BENJAMIN KLINKEL
For an on-the-go option, the deli case presents an array of gourmet offerings, from ready-to-eat meals to take-and-bake specialties. The seafood department showcases a variety of both wild-caught and farmraised options, such as finfish, shellfish, and mollusks.
Other departments throughout the market are charcuterie, air tights, soft tack, cow juice, and floral.
“As I said before, we’re doing this as a nod to the pioneering spirit, so we say ‘air tights’ in place of jarred food, we say ‘cow juice’ in place of dairy, and ‘soft tack’ in place of bread,” explained Klinkel.
The Pack Mule also features a full liquor, cigar, provision, and apothecary department.
The liquor store, also known as Bottled Courage, contains a wide selection of wine, beer, and liquor— including a focus on craft beers and boutique wines.
The Parlour, a walk-in humidor, is stocked with luxury cigars and tobacco.
The Pack Mule is working with Victoria’s Garden to provide fresh flowers in their floral department.
“WE JUST WANT TO CREATE A COOL SPACE FOR PEOPLE, FOR FELLOWSHIP, TO HANG OUT, & CELEBRATE COMMUNITY.”
- Benjamin Klinkel
Finally, the provision and apothecary departments boast everything from home and kitchen, to cleaning and hygiene products.
The Pack Mule isn’t just about groceries. The store fosters a sense of community by offering a gathering space for residents and tourists. Customers can gather around the Perpendicular—a standup bar where patrons can indulge in a bite to eat with friends or family.
“There’s a full kitchen behind the bar, and we also have a liquor license,” shared Klinkel. “So customers can enjoy a glass of wine or craft beer while shopping.”
The Perpendicular also acts as a station for future classes and events, such as cooking classes and demonstrations, wine tastings and pairings, and floral arranging courses. All classes are designed for adults and kids, and their expert instructors ensure each session will be both fun and informative.
Check out the newlyopened Pack Mule location in Rapid City at 100 Saint Joseph Street.
“We want our guests to go home with a new recipe and idea that they put to use in their kitchen,” said Klinkel.
While not in class, the bar transforms into a bustling social hub, where guests can relax with a drink and savor the region's flavors.
For individuals and families exploring the Black Hills, The Pack Mule is a fitting spot to stock up on provisions for their adventures.
“Whether it’s grabbing healthy snacks or ingredients to conjure up meals and s’mores, The Pack Mule is always going to have something for moms, dads, kids, and everyone else,” shared Klinkel.
Kianna Binger was frustrated with trying to find reliable cleaners for her and her husband Shane’s property management company, Trailhound Cabin Co.
Seeing an opportunity to not only meet her own needs, but also leave a lasting mark on her community, Kianna started Lemon Fresh Cleaners in 2022.
When the Rapid City business took off faster than she could have imagined, Kianna had the idea to open the business up to franchise.
“We were getting new quote requests every day,” said Kianna. “People were asking ‘Do you travel to Philip?’ and, ‘When are you coming to Aberdeen?’”
Kianna graduated with honors from South Dakota State University in 2016 with a degree in entrepreneurial studies and the dream of opening her own business.
With 10 years of advertising experience, plus a childhood of her parents hand-painting the iconic
Wall Drug signs, she felt well equipped for this new venture.
Kianna hired a consultant to learn about the ins and outs of professional cleaning and conducted intensive research to find the absolute “zest” products.
Next, she and Shane took responsibility for the different parts of the business—Shane would handle the logistics, while Kianna would be in charge of HR, advertising, and quality control.
With a mission of empowering women, creating clean, safe homes, and giving back to the community, Kianna says she’s never felt so “onfire” about a project before.
“Lemon Fresh Cleaners is more than a cleaning service; it's a catalyst for positive change,” she shared.

Written by Greta Smith & photos by John SnyderOur services can be best described as… natural and high-end. We ensure a clean, safe approach to cleaning that is effective, yet gentle for families, pets, and homes. Each Lemon Fresh location is female-owned and operated, reflecting our dedication to fostering an environment where women lead and succeed.
The best part of my job is… witnessing how we can help busy families, giving them more quality time with their kids, how relaxed they are coming home to a clean house, and being able to do it with natural products that are so much healthier for their kids.
Another great part is the positive impact our franchise model has on women—empowering them to be their own bosses, while providing top-notch cleaning services to our communities.
Something different about the way we clean is… that we don't rely on harsh chemicals. We combine amazing natural products with a thorough understanding of the pH scale so we can clean effectively without ever needing bleach. Also, our commercial steamers can clean and disinfect at 220 degrees, so we don’t have to use any products at all in sensitive homes.

Kianna and Shane support eight local nonprofits, and Kianna donates her time each week at the Dahl Arts Center in Rapid City.
My favorite coffee shop is… Pump House Coffee & Eatery in Deadwood, where I love sipping a dry cappuccino and watching the local artisans blow glass. I’m also big on their breakfast sandwich—it’s breakfast and a show.
My favorite way to spend my free time is… at the pottery studio enjoying the natural light and meditating over the clay spinning circles in my hands. I also love hiking and enjoying the beauty of the Black Hills.
My go-to restaurant is… Ron's Café in Rapid City. It's female-owned and operated, and she knows my order by heart: Blueberry gluten-free pancakes. It's comfort food in a relaxed atmosphere, and the people are great.
I couldn’t do it without… our friends and family who have been our biggest supporters on our social media pages and in real life, too. My husband, Shane, is also so sweet, compassionate, and sees the world in a different light than I do.

Something that is influencing me right now is… imposter syndrome. While I’m so excited for the big picture in this venture, it’s all really overwhelming sometimes. I try to stay present, focusing on the next right choice I can make to keep the ball moving. Another thing influencing me is the green movement, as I ensure that our products and policies are as sustainable and eco-friendly as possible.
Something that people don’t know about my company is… how much work goes on behind the scenes. Coming home after a long day at work means washing loads of cleaning supplies, refilling products, quoting, payroll, and keeping employees happy. As any business owner knows, there's an entire other job after your “job.”
I balance my work and home life
by… not letting it feel like work in the first place. Admittedly, there’s not a lot of balance right now because I could work on this sun-up to sun-down and find something to be excited about the next day. However, I take breaks whenever I feel burnout coming on and pursue other passions, take a hike, and get some sunshine.

Growing up, my dream job
was… to be an artist. Getting to design a cheeky brand, and do satisfying cleaning jobs—I feel like I got close enough!
Our franchisees… are set up with a proven brand, training, and operations to “clean house,” literally and figuratively. We take as much of the operation’s load off of them as we can so they can focus on the real job: Cleaning. Our first franchisee, Jenna , has taken it to new heights, assembled a team we are so proud of, offers incredible leadership, and her schedule is absolutely packed.

A goal I have for the next five years is… expanding our franchise network to reach more communities, empowering more women, and increasing our support for local nonprofits. However, something I’ve learned from the past five years is that nothing turns out the way I’ve planned—it’s usually so much better. The best thing I can do is pray about it.
Your Nurtured Baby is Sioux Falls' first one-stop shop for infant wellness, offering a combination of spa services, educational classes, and baby care essentials.
The premier baby spa and boutique offers babies and parents a unique and nurturing environment.
Founded by mother-daughter duo Laura Hanson and Liz Aragon, Your Nurtured Baby has a mission to empower parents and ensure all babies thrive.
Hanson and Aragon’s passion for infant well-being
stems from personal experience. Hanson, a mother of five, was inspired by her daughter, Mara, who was born with Down syndrome and a heart defect.
Hanson shares that Mara developed heart failure sooner than expected. As the doctors were gearing up for open-heart surgery on the then 3-month-old, Hanson stumbled across something life-changing.
“I was scrolling through TikTok at three in the morning, and I came across this baby spa in Chicago and infant massage and its benefits,” she explained.
The mother discovered infant massages aid in muscle tone, whereas babies with Down syndrome tend to have low muscle tone.
“As I was looking into it, I noticed no one else in Sioux Falls taught it,” said Hanson.
Amazed by the benefits it brought to Mara, Hanson knew she had to bring this practice to South Dakota. Aragon, seeing her sister’s challenges, was motivated to learn more about infant care.
written by gabby sudenga + photos by cailyn pattersonThe mother and daughter then set out to Washington, D.C. to gain a certification in infant massage, amongst other qualifications.
One of the main services at Your Nurtured Baby is Infant Massage
As Hanson and Aragon are both Certified Educators of Infant Massage, they offer and instruct classes that teach parents this gentle art.
Infant massage has been shown to benefit babies in numerous ways, including promoting relaxation, improving sleep, and relieving physical discomfort.
“Parents often come to learn infant massages to help relieve the discomfort of gas, constipation, and colic,” said Hanson.
These massages also aid in promoting a strong bond between parent and child.
“We only teach parents and caregivers, as the connection that’s being made is so strong,” stated Hanson.
The other main service at Your Nurtured Baby is Water Movement—a fun way to help babies discover independent movement before they’re mobile on land.
Water movement has been shown to improve muscle tone, relaxation, stimulation, and confidence.
Four temperature-controlled tubs line a wall of the storefront equipped with flotation devices, water toys, reusable swim diapers, towels, and stools for parents to sit and enjoy the experience.
“The infant massage and water movement have a lot of similar benefits,” shared Hanson.
Parents interested in experiencing either service can choose from Hanson's Float + Basic Massage package for babies aged 2 to 12 months or Float Only for babies aged 2 to 15 months.
Your Nurtured Baby recognizes the importance of community for parents, offering classes that provide opportunities for socialization and support.
“During our classes, I believe we are indirectly supporting the parents, especially with infant massage,” said Hanson.
“Not one family is the same. You’re always going to be welcome here, regardless of what your family looks like.”

• She’s a proud Army veteran with a civilian work history, including city government and corporate administration.
• Her husband, Tony, is a career firefighter.
• Her other certifications include Newborn Care Specialist and CPR + First Aid
• She’s the mom of a sweet Bernese Mountain dog, Tsunade
• She’s the oldest of her five siblings.
• Her other certifications include Newborn Care Specialist and CPR + First Aid.
She continued, “Classes can show benefits to moms dealing with postpartum depression, and they make connections with parents who are maybe in the same stages as them so they’re able to grow and connect.”
The education classes aid in gaining confidence in caring for a newborn with workshops on newborn care basics, CPR and choking, and cloth diapers.
Additionally, Hanson and Aragon offer classes for expecting parents, dads, and babysitters.
While attending a class can appear daunting, Hanson shares that her team is there to answer any questions and offer support to parents.
“When we start our classes, we remind parents that it’s a judgment-free zone,” she added. “We just want you to be comfortable while hitting our main goal of helping families with their baby's development and growth.”
Your Nurtured Baby goes beyond just providing services. The business fosters a sense of community by hosting events such as playgroups, storytime, Footprint Art , Bumpin’ with Baby, and Sing N’ Sprout
“Sing N’ Sprout is a 45-minute movement and music class where parents and their babies can come in and sing and dance,” explained Hanson. “It’s also great networking for the parents, too.”
Hanson and Aragon recognize that a nurtured baby is a happy baby.
“Parents can expect a judgment- free zone where they can ask us all sorts of questions.”
- Laura Hanson
In the front of their store and online is a boutique stocked with a curated selection of eco-friendly and sustainable products.
“It’s important to us that we know where the clothing and products were made from and that they’re safe for kids,” stated Hanson.
Your Nurtured Baby’s boutique focuses on clothing, accessories, toys, teethers, pacifiers, bath products, and more for children.
Additionally, the boutique has a section dedicated to mothers, which includes clothing, skincare, teething necklaces, and the Mamma Bottle —a water bottle specifically designed to support moms through pregnancy and breastfeeding to meet their daily water needs.
Since opening its doors in November 2022, Your Nurtured Baby has equipped parents and caregivers with the tools they need to properly nurture their babies into becoming toddlers, teenagers, and adults.
“It’s been an incredible experience for us, especially since we’re the fourth baby spa in the nation who are all independently operated and owned,” shared Hanson. “It’s an overall unique experience parents can come to do with their kids in Sioux Falls.”
“One of our greatest weaknesses is that we don’t talk enough about what we do,” said Daniel Neeves, assistant director at Siouxland Libraries.
While a library might seem like a place solely for book lovers, Siouxland Libraries is in actuality an extensive network of resources and connections that are an asset to any child, teen, student, adult, or family.
“You might come in and check out a book or a movie or use our public computers, but there’s so much that you have access to,” said Neeves.
Neeves started working at Siouxland Libraries in 1999 as a part-time shelver. After graduating college in 2006, he returned to the organization to drive the system’s mobile library, the Bookmobile, and never looked back.
“That’s where my heart wanted to be,” he remembered. “It was here.”
Now, Neeves works in leadership and development, helping staff reach their potential while remaining fully committed to Siouxland Libraries’ mission to connect people to a world of information and ideas to enrich their lives.
“Siouxland Libraries is a great place to work because you get to touch people’s lives in more of a way than you would think on surface level.”
The existing library system was once two separate entities: The Sioux Falls Public Library and Minnehaha County Rural Libraries. In 1995, they collided to form Siouxland Libraries.
Merging allowed the organization to open 13 different branches in the county and Sioux Falls, and provided more people with resources for the common good.
Siouxland Libraries has different initiatives for four different age groups: birth to 5 years old, kindergarten through fifth grade, teen, and adult.
“Programming ranges from storytimes and parent-child workshops all the way to STEM programs, teen art contests, adult speed friending, author talks, and tech classes,” said Neeves.
Events in the birth to 5 category focus on early literacy efforts and educating parents.
“In our parent-child workshops, we have a series of classes where we bring in health professionals or other community professionals that help a new parent know they’re not alone,” said Neeves.
These classes help parents to feel confident being their child’s first teacher and express the importance of play and spending time together.
Siouxland Libraries has 13 branches in the following 9 cities & towns: + Baltic + Brandon + Colton + Crooks + Garretson + Hartford + Humboldt + Sioux Falls + Valley Springs
“Libraries are really about three things: Literacy, technology, and community space.”
Additionally, all of the storytellers go through a program called Supercharged Storytime, which instructs them to be attentive and engaging narrators.
“We have a very high standard of how our storytellers perform, so the quality of our program matches the importance of what we do for the community,” said Neeves.
From kindergarten to fifth grade, programming revolves around keeping kids kinesthetically engaged. These young learners can enjoy different clubs and crafts, as well as reading sessions with therapy dogs.
Another offering is Kids Create —a 45-minute class with revolving themes that allows participants to explore their creative side through stories, crafts, games, and activities.
Teen programming focuses on interacting with the community, and prioritizes engagement and expression with other teens.
Events include writing clubs, book discussions, art contests, hands-on learning classes, and craft-making.
Adult opportunities facilitate community building and learning. Activities include book clubs, classes, writer’s groups, trivia nights, clubs, author visits, art nights, and more.
Siouxland Libraries also hosts a summer reading program to challenge the whole family to read together.
“The idea is to help students avoid the summer slide, so when they go back to school in the fall, they haven’t lost the art of reading and they’re not as far behind,” explained Neeves. “We do that by making fun challenges and offering prizes for families who do that together.”
Outside of programming, Siouxland Libraries offers a world of resources for everyone. Library cards are free to those who live in Minnehaha County or Sioux Falls, and provide access to check out books, DVDs, games, magazines, audiobooks, and more.
Other assets, such as computer and wi-fi access, mobile printing, study rooms, and community spaces are available to anyone who walks through the doors.
“We try to make it as easy as possible for people to use our services,” said Neeves.
He points out working or studying at the library can provide a change of scenery and an alternative to more expensive locations, such as a coffee shop or café.
On top of programming and services, Siouxland Libraries offers cardholders free access to online learning databases, such as LinkedIn Learning, JobNow, and Mango Languages
Studies show if a child doesn’t learn to read proficiently by the age of 3, the chances they will graduate are significantly less.
LinkedIn Learning offers thousands of courses, including:
+ Critical Thinking
+ CRM Basics
+ Developing Your Emotional Intelligence
+ Excel: Tips & Tricks
+ Figure Drawing
+ Interpersonal Communication
+ Learning Personal Branding
+ Learning Python
+ Online Marketing Foundations
+ Strategic Thinking
“If you’re familiar with LinkedIn, LinkedIn Learning is educational classes of the same caliber,” said Neeves. “It’s amazing stuff built by professionals, and very underknown.”
For workforce preparation, JobNow provides online job assistance, including professional resume critique, interview help, and job search engines.
Mango Languages offers users the choice of over 70 languages to learn. The curriculum consists of a blend of content, including vocabulary, listening and reading, audio components, and conversation-based methodology.
With branches across Minnehaha County and Sioux Falls, Siouxland Libraries is committed to offering access to free resources for all.
“It doesn’t matter who you are or where you come from—you have the ability to better yourself or to relax with a good read or a good movie,” said Neeves. “And we get to provide all of that.”
Plum’s Cooking Company opened in 1986 in Sioux Falls under Caroline Peterson, becoming a regional destination for beginner and expert cooks.
Thirty years later, Penny Klinedinst , who owned neighboring business Simply Perfect, purchased Plum’s after hearing Peterson was retiring.
“Today, Plum’s Cooking Co. hosts a state-of-the-art commercial kitchen to teach a variety of culinary classes, along with highquality kitchen tools,” said Lizzie Stewart , class manager of Plum’s Cooking School.
The business exists to help customers grow their love for the culinary arts, no matter where they are in their cooking journey.
The classes range from Classic Comfort Food , Hands-On Sushi, Four-Course Date Night , European Delight , and more.
When Stewart first discovered Plum’s, she knew she wanted to be involved in the women-owned business.
“I have so much love for the store itself,” said Stewart. “I went all in and learned about the culture of Plum’s Cooking Company.”
Now, Stewart shares her culinary expertise through an abundance of classes, demonstrating her love and passion to those who attend the courses she leads.
This summer, Stewart will be instructing various Kids Camps to introduce kids to the culinary world.
Kids from ages 6 to 17 will have the opportunity to learn about basic skills in the kitchen, tips and cooking techniques, and create delicious meals and treats along the way.
Learn more about the chef, from her favorite classes, tools in the kitchen, and her hobbies.
What are your favorite classes to instruct?
Right now, I’m loving all of our Hands-On offerings, teaching small groups everything from pastries and sourdough to gorgeous pasta.
What’s your favorite part about instructing Kids Camps? What I love about teaching Kids Camps is the growth we see so quickly in our small students. They start on day one not really sure of themselves or what to expect from the class, and then they quickly gain confidence and start opening up and become so creative! They can't wait to go home and share their day and recipes with their families. It is so rewarding to get to spend the summer with these amazing kids!
What are your Go-to tools in the kitchen?
I must have a Dutch oven, a great knife, and a cast iron pan.
Kids Baking (ages 9-12)
Kids Farm to Table (ages 9-12)
Kids Flavors of The World (ages 9-12)
Kids Little Foodies (ages 6-8)
Teen Flavors of The World (ages 13-17)
The Great Sioux Falls Young Chef Competition (ages 16-18)
Where’s your favorite restaurant in Sioux Falls? This is a hard question, but I would have to say Look’s Marketplace
What are your hobbies outside of cooking?
Well, I absolutely love cooking, but outside of that, I enjoy gardening.
