Dr. Clayton Twitero always knew he wanted to be an Optometrist. “I was a freshman in high school when I got my first pair of glasses. Walking back to school, I could see tree branches. That was when I knew I wanted to do the same thing for other people”. He established Brookings Vision Center in 2000. His partner, Dr. Trisha Morehouse, joined him in 2018. Brookings Vision Center has always been focused on Whole Family Eye-care. “Specialty? You bet,” Dr. Twitero smiled. “We specialize in providing the very best eye care we can, with compassion and excellence, for ages 0 to 100+”. After 23 years, an expansion was needed to better serve BVC’s patients and their staff, fondly known in Brookings as Team BVC. Dr. Twitero & Dr. Morehouse
“We designed the exam rooms, front desk, and optical space for a fluid and intimate patient experience. Patients love starting their visit with a stop at our beverage/snack station, and often choose a book from the lending library.” said Cathi Twitero, CEO. “We wanted to show how we value our Team and their wellbeing with our building choices,” said Dr. Trisha Morehouse. An exercise room, full bathroom/locker room, kitchen, and family room full of comfy sectionals provide an optimal staff space. There are also two “Eye Need a Minute” rooms, with massage chairs and recliners. The new building also allows BVC’s Optical Team to do even more of what they do best: style their customers in frames that suit their face and personality, but also enhance everything about their look.

“We take pride in providing carefully styled frames, selected in conjunction with lens technology that enhances the customer’s lifestyle. Our Opticians are Optical Stylists.” said Dr. Morehouse. Dr. Twitero and Dr. Morehouse also specialize in treating Dry Eye Disease. They use Optilight IPL technology, the first and only FDA approved treatment of Dry Eye, which addresses the root cause, rather than just managing symptoms. “The relief our Dry Eye patients are enjoying brings us immense gratification. We’re proud of the increased quality of daily life for those patients.” said Dr. Twitero.
Dr. Twitero and Dr. Morehouse are thrilled to expand and introduce Vision Aesthetics at Brookings Vision Center. Vision Aesthetics is an Eye and Med Spa featuring services from providers Rachel Lynde, DNP, and Rowdy Warr, an Esthetician who trained at the Aveda Institute of Denver. Nurse Practitioner Lynde’s Medspa services include anti-wrinkle Xeomin injections, IPL skin rejuvenation, IPL hair removal, and medical ear piercing. In the Eye Spa, Esthetician Warr’s services include eyebrow and eyelash treatments, along with facials. “It’s a unique and exciting addition to the Brookings Community and our practice,” said Cathi Twitero, CEO. Rachel Lynde, DNP
““We live our core values of CARE every day, with every patient interaction: Compassion, Authenticity, Respect, and Excellence aren’t just concepts for us. Our values dictate everything we do.” -Dr. Twitero Rowdy Warr, Esthetician

Mister Smith’s Quoted as having “the best bread in the world” by Amy Bloom of Oprah Magazine in 2002, one might assume Mister Smith’s in Vermillion would be found in a large brick and mortar. What actually adds to the charm (in 605’s opinion), is that the bakery, café, and catering company is in an unassuming location inside of Ace Hardware. The bread’s recipe is still that of the late Larry Smith, who started baking back when he was a police captain in

Connecticut. He and his wife moved to Vermillion to focus on baking after Smith was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, and his memory lives on in the popular sandwich shop today. Whether you’re a hungover student, a local, or a visitor, you can’t go wrong with the Big Smith, the Philly Cheese Steak (Beef or Chicken), or a Build Your Own sandwich. Mister Smith’s also offers breakfast (try the Punisher), catering, and baked items like cupcakes and cakes.

Business & Experience
Sioux Falls State Theatre They say the show must go on, and that was definitely the case for the Sioux State Theatre. Built in 1926 in downtown Sioux Falls to showcase silent film and vaudeville performances, the majestic venue wowed audiences with its iconic marquee and sophisticated Beaux Arts-inspired architecture. After closing suddenly in 1991 due to outward migration of residents and businesses to malls and suburbs, The State Theatre slowly fell into disrepair. After community support and huge fundraising efforts, the landmark reopened in December of 2020 just in time for the holidays. “I believe the community feels a sense of attachment and pride in preserving the State Theatre,” said State Theatre executive director Allison Weiland. “The sentimental value can’t be understated, but there is also the architectural beauty and the economic and community development aspect that can’t be overshadowed.” The main floor was restored to replicate the design and color scheme. “When we started renovation, the interior of the Theatre was pretty much all white,” recalled Weiland. “It was astonishing to see the true colors of the Theatre shine. Going back to the original design and colors was not easy, but it definitely was worth it.” While it was very important to keep historical aspects, Weiland says it was also important to update the seating situation and modernize the equipment.
SIOUXFALLS STATETHEATRE.ORG (605) 335-5757 316 SOUTH PHILLIPS AVE, SIOUX FALLS
“As a cinema, we had to make sure we had comfortable seats,” said Weiland. “Our recliners are a fan favorite, along with our Barco 4k projector and our Meyer Sound system.” To keep the historial dramatics, each film begins with the opening of the red curtain. Before certain showings, the title is projected on the curtains for extra flair. “Watching the curtain open and close is so dramatic and really sets the mood that the show is about to start,”
605 Best Way to Watch a Film
said Weiland. “We also curated the preshow music to complement the feature and often show vintage movie trailers of upcoming movies.” Memberships are available that include discounted admission, concessions, and merchandise. There are also exclusive members-only film screenings. The State Theatre is open for movies Wednesday through Sunday and offers a variety of programming each week. “From classics to new releases, from local to foreign films, our goal is to have something to appeal to everyone,” said Weiland. A popular series is Late Night at the State, where one Friday a month is dedicated to show “a truly bizarre cult classic movie.” The State Theatre currently has 155 reclining seats available, and Weiland says the goal is to expand their footprint by opening the balcony. “We have made many milestones at the State Theatre over the last few years, and we look forward to growing within the community,” said Weiland. “Our work is not over as we still have a large amount of the theater that needs to be finished.” During the month of December, the State Theatre will be open seven days a week showing holiday favorites and a few new releases. January will also be full of entertainment with some Academy Award season buzz, along with classic programming. Even though there is still work left to do, Weiland says she has faith the people of Sioux Falls will continue their support. She said, “We know that with the support of our community we will be able to thrive well into the future and continue to bring the magic of cinema to everyone in our community and beyond.

605 Best Place to Work Remotely
Lon Stroschein had been working in the corporate world for 15 years when he realized he needed a change. “When I left [my job] I didn’t necessarily know what I wanted to do, but I just knew that I was ready for something else,” he said. “Low and behold a few months later, I realized that there are a lot of people who have done well in their professional life that decided that they are interested in trying something else, so now I help people figure out if they are ready and help them pivot to whatever else they want to do for the rest of their lives.” The coaching company is Normal 40, and Stroschein began working out of his house. It wasn’t long until he missed the office setting. “I realize that there are some great reasons to work from home, but I knew I wanted an office and to work where there are a whole bunch of people working together, but also independently on their own businesses,” he recalled. He approached Startup Sioux Falls to become a mentor, and soon saw all of the benefits to the community that prides itself on empowering founders. Located in a repurposed train depot on Phillips Avenue, the building is newly renovated, but the non-profit has been around for decades. “Our coworking space opened February 1, 2023, but our nonprofit's roots go back to 2002 when we were formed by the Sioux Falls Chamber of Commerce and the Sioux Falls Development Foundation to help incubate talent and new businesses to contribute to creating economic development,” said Startup Sioux Falls community coordinator Amos Buelow. Since 2002, the non-profit has evolved from the South Dakota Technology Business Center, to the Zeal Center for Entrepreneurship, to a merger with Startup Sioux Falls— a startup community organization founded by entrepreneur Matt Paulson.

Memberships can vary, with Startup Social at $25 a month, Hot Desk at $100 a month, and a Dedicated Desk at $300 a month. There is also an option for a Day Pass. Along with physical space to rent, the Startup Sioux Falls community is also an asset with over 7,000 members in the Facebook community, events with doers and innovators, and a newsletter with news and opportunities. There are also programs to apply for to test out ideas and/or to grow a member’s business. Stroschein, who is one of the office tenants, says Startup Sioux Falls members get what they make out of it. “I will attend after hour events on occasion and I will meet people who are in a startup setting,” continued Stroschein, “and I express to them that they can come in and grab a coffee or a scenario like that because I have been there and I realize that you get what you give, and if you are willing to give a little bit you can have a lot of great relationships.” Buelow says from the offices, to the desks, to the conference rooms, to the communal kitchen and lounge area, the well-thought out building was made for work and collaborations. “When you walk in, you will find a dedicated work area, connections happening naturally, and events and workshops fueling the environment,” he said. And the goal is to keep on marching forward, one startup at a time. He added, “Our mission is to empower founders and ignite innovation. Our vision is to help people 100,000x and help 100 Startups grow by 2034.” STARTUPSIOUXFALLS.COM // (605) 275-8000 100 E 6TH ST, SIOUX FALLS
Everyone is welcome to be a member who identifies as a remote worker, including creatives, entrepreneurs, and business professionals visiting Sioux Falls. No matter what stage that person is in their process, Startup Sioux Falls can help with the next step. “It’s a community and a building that you can rely on to be here working through problems that you can count on having on your own journey through solo-preneurship or entrepreneurship or just working remotely,” said Stroschein.

Saloon No. 10 is a testament to the vibrant spirit of the Wild West and Deadwood's rich history. The establishment holds a rich history that is intertwined with many Wild West legends, including Wild Bill Hickok and his demise. For more than a century, the saloon has defined the historic town of Deadwood, showcasing the colorful past of the city. This year, Saloon No. 10 will be celebrating 60 years with the 60th Anniversary Party. The festivities will revolve around celebrating the family who owns the old-style saloon, the Keehns. “The party will begin with recreating the famous Horsin’ Around photo,” stated Louie Lalonde, general manager and co-owner of Saloon No. 10. Lalonde’s parents took ownership of the saloon in 1963, marking the beginning of the business family affair. The legacy within the saloon has been passed down through generations, thriving under the care of the Keehn family. “This year’s photo will be special as we have a number of bartenders from past years stopping by to be in the photo,” said Lalonde. Those who attend will partake in a champagne toast, and enjoy tasty hor d’oeuvres from the saloon’s partnering restaurant, Deadwood Social Club. “We’re very excited to celebrate 60 years,” shared Lalonde. “But more importantly, we hope to see many familiar faces of past employees that we haven’t seen for years and share old memories of days gone by.” Learn more about Lalonde and the history of Saloon No. 10.

THE BANK HOTEL DEADWOOD For Carmen and Isaac Almanza, Deadwood has always been one of their favorite historic towns to visit in the area. The couple has always admired the city's beauty, historic charm, and immense entertainment options. “Growing up in the Black Hills, it’s always been a dream of ours to have a place in Deadwood that's also close to Terry Peak Ski Area.” When the pair finally decided it was time to look for a place, it just so happened to be in the cards that a former bank was available. Ecstatic for the find, Carmens says the remodel began soon after with their vision. “We began with gutting the top two floors down to the studs and began the transformation,” said Carmen. Following months and months of planning and renovations, The Bank Hotel Deadwood opened at 696 Main Street in May 2022. The Bank Hotel’s history dates back to 1903 when it was built to be the home of Black Hills Trust and Savings Bank. The building's architecture reflects the grandeur of the era, with its ornate sandstone block walls, large arched windows, and massive granite columns.

The economy of the 1920s would eventually take a toll on the building, closing its doors and converting it into offices. Various aspects of the original building were destroyed and removed, such as the 18-foot mahogany columns were sawn off and the vault door was sold. In 1990, First Western Bank restored the building to its original condition. Rebuilding the mahogany columns and locating the primary vault door over 50 years, later which was found in an abandoned building near Whitewood and was reinstalled. Once Carmen and Isaac purchased the historic building in January 2021, it underwent a meticulous remodel, transforming it into the upscale hotel it is today. “We are located directly in the heart of downtown historic Deadwood,” said Carmen. “It’s ideally situated across the street from Deadwood’s Outlaw Square on Main Street.” This convenient location allows guests to enjoy live music, parades, ice skating, and most of Deadwood’s main events and attractions from the comfort of The Bank’s condos. The Bank Hotel Deadwood offers a variety of spacious and well-appointed condominiums, ranging from a largesized studio to an even larger one- or three-bedroom condo. Each condo features a fully equipped kitchen or kitchenette, luxurious king beds, flatscreen TVs, air conditioning, laundry, and complimentary wireless Internet access.

The Studio and One-Bedroom condos host a queen-sized sofa bed or additional sleeping arrangements. “All condos have maple hardwood floors throughout and heated tile floors in all of the bathrooms," explained Carmen. She adds that each condo is highlighted with ambient fireplaces, quartz countertops, large windows dressed with luxury window coverings, comfortable linens and mattresses, with modern décor and furnishings to tie it all together. The studio is perfect for guests who are looking to relax or prepare for going out on the town, while the other two condos are, as Carmen states, an entertainer's dream.

“Guests are able to watch concerts, parades, and all the fun right from the dining room table,” she said. “It also boasts plenty of seating for guests.” The Penthouse Condo allows its guests to entertain themselves by gazing out the front windows at Outlaw Square. The three-Bedroom Penthouse Condo occupies over 2,700 square feet and is the entire top floor of the building offering three king-sized bedrooms with two-anda-half luxury bathrooms. “Each unit is unique in its own way, but all give the feeling of complete luxury from the moment of arrival,” explained Carmen.

Throughout the building, the charm and characteristics remain stately, elegant, and detailed. “It was important to us to maintain the historic charm of Deadwood in each condo throughout the remodel,” stated Carmen. The hotel's non-smoking and no-pet policy ensures a fresh and clean environment for all guests. Guests don’t have to travel far to experience the excitement that downtown Deadwood has to offer. Saloon No. 10, Jacobs Brewhouse & Grocer, Durty Nelly’s of Deadwood, Legend’s Steakhouse, and more local favorites are just mere steps away from the boutique hotel. However, guests don’t even have to exit the hotel to visit Elks Lodge or The Vault Lounge. Take a walk through the Historic Adams Museum, visit Deadwood Mountain Grand, or catch a live show at the Deadwood Mountain Grand Event Center. For a taste of Deadwood's wild past, try your luck at one of the many casinos or saloons. Carmen adds that some of her and Isaac’s favorite shops in the area are Madame Peacock’s and The Pink Door. “All of these adventures will lead to great experiences and memories,” admitted Carmen. “You’ll never run out of things to do in Deadwood.”

Midtown coffee radio hour Hour It was December of 2020 during the first Christmas of the pandemic. Kristina “Tina” Jackson was in a funk after one of her main forms of comfort and entertainment had gone off the air—Live from Here with Chris Thile on NPR. Formerly known as A Prairie Home Companion, the American variety radio show was known for its musical guests, tongue-in-cheek radio drama, and relaxed humor. “Everything was weird and a little bit sad during that time,” she reflected. “So, I wanted to do something that would bring back a little bit of Christmas cheer. I had the idea to do a similar radio-hour style show that we could record at a safe distance and put out as a sort of podcast.” Tina’s husband, Nick, was a part of the theater community since the couple moved back to Sioux Falls in 2018 and helped bring her idea into fruition. “I can’t stress enough how this idea would have gone nowhere without him,” said Tina. “He recruited everyone for the band through his performing arts contacts and friends and, thankfully, they all said yes.” That same month, the ensemble gathered in an empty sanctuary, masked up, spread out, and recorded their first show with no audience. The show’s name was dubbed Midtown Radio Coffee Hour, which was based on a fictional coffee shop in their neighborhood near Park Ridge Plaza.

“The show was originally an opportunity to do a little art and spread joy while we were all isolated.” tina jackson “We really like neighborhood names and giving different parts of the city an identity, and our neighborhood feels like it could be a cool ‘midtown’ area,” said Tina. “Not downtown, but not just residential suburbs.” The name is also the hypothetical setting of where the show takes place. Physically though, shows have taken place everywhere from their backyard, to the Levitt at the Falls, to the Back Alley on Augustana University’s campus, to the Belbas Theater in the Washington Pavilion, to the current location at ICON Event Hall.

“I don’t know if I could pick a favorite venue—they all had their charms and their, shall we say, quirks,” said Tina. “We’ve been super lucky to be able to play in so many fun settings and spaces.” But the talented ensemble didn’t start with live shows. “We made five shows in the empty church sanctuary, which gave us time to figure out what we were doing,” said Tina. “After doing five shows in five months and just putting them on the internet, we really needed some in-person feedback to help keep us motivated to do the show and decided to spread them out a bit.”

In May of 2021, an audience model began taking shape during a recording in the backyard with fellow performer friends in the seats, like The Goodnight Theatre Collective. The guidance from Bob Wendland and Luke Tatge helped with figuring out logistics and how to put on live performances. Tina says it also meant a lot to have friends show up for them. “Their support was immeasurable,” recalled Tina. “Also, we guilted our extensive family members in town into coming to every show, so that really helped us get a live show off the ground.” Now Midtown Coffee Radio Hour performs around six to eight times a year with three shows in the fall and spring semesters and two shows in the summertime or for fundraisers. When asked about favorite moments from a show, Tina noted one from the inaugural audience episode when Nick interviewed their 86-year-old neighbor, Wes. “Wes spoke about life being ‘just a moment.’ It makes me tear up just thinking about it,” she remembered. Another highlight was from a February 2022 show in the Back Alley, where lead female vocalist and voice actor Maren Engel “brought down the house” with a rendition of Can’t Help Falling in Love by Elvis Presley. “It was just one of those full-body-chills moments,” said Tina. The vibe of Midtown Coffee Radio Hour is described as hygge with creating an hour that makes the audience and listeners “feel cozy and comfortable, but will also make you laugh and/ or cry and/or think.” “We will have Nick doing a dramatic reading of the instructions that come with Christmas lights followed up by Maren singing Both Sides Now by Joni Mitchell,” said Tina. “It’s a little bit of everything that we like.”

The last show of the fall series was November 30, and the spring series will be March 7, April 18, and another date to be determined. In regards to the local art scene climate, Tina says there’s definitely momentum going on. “I love that there are so many weird, niche art groups now, from the poetry slams at Full Circle Book Co-op, to The Goodnight Theatre, Premiere Playhouse, and DAPA performances, to the visual art scene at Rose and Eugene Presents, to the outdoor dance shows from Headlights Theater—there is almost too much happening to go to it all,” said Tina. And according to Tina, that’s a good problem to have. She continued, “The best part is I know the people doing the art, and that is something really special.”

Written by Greta Smith + Photos by Alana Snyder Among the homes on 26th street, and directly between Sioux Falls’ two rival colleges Augustana University and University of Sioux Falls, sits Sunny’s Pizzeria. Owner Jon Oppold opened the shop in December of 2019 after living in the neighborhood for 10 years with his wife Katy and their French Bulldog, Sunny. While walking Sunny, Jon noticed the laundromat occupying the space and thought, ‘It could be something way cooler.’ Eight years later, it did become something way cooler. Sunny’s Pizzeria was open for business. Jon said he was drawn to the location due to the fact that it could become a neighborhood pizza place, one that wasn’t in the middle of a business district or a strip mall. “You really get a flavor of the city when you have neighborhood spots, and it’s important to have a place for local people to congregate,” he said. The shop boasts a rotating specialty pizza menu, as well as some fan favorites with punny titles like Oink! There It Is!, Mac N’ Cheese Louise, Augie Blues, and BB-Coo Chicken. Customers can also build their own pizza to their liking, as well as order a beer or a slice of garlic cheesy bread.

Originality has always been important to Jon, and the former graphic designer had been continually frustrated that the corporations he worked for in the past would take the zing out of his marketing ideas. “They would take out the part that made it pop because it was the risky thing,” he said. Jon revealed that a driving force in opening Sunny’s was having the ability to market in the fun and zany ways he always wanted to. “If you don't get comfortable with getting weird, your marketing isn’t going to work the way it should, because the whole point of marketing is getting attention,” said Jon. The shop now boasts a multitude of these weird marketing tactics, which are not only about bringing people in, but also about sharing the space and simply having fun. For example, Jon transformed the pizza shop’s only bathroom by covering the walls in stickers and putting up a rotating disco light. “I decided if it’s going to be a small, dumpy little bathroom, we should at least make it fun,” he said.

Jon invites customers to contribute to the fun by adding their own stickers to the bathroom wall. Yet customers aren’t the only ones who get to enjoy and participate in the restaurant’s identity. Employees also get to collaborate on the restaurant’s rotating menu. “Twice a year we shut the whole place down and we hold what I call a ‘Try It Night,’” said Jon. Employees submit their recipes, and Jon cooks for them and their families. Afterward, the staff votes on the pizzas, and the top-ranked pies take their place on the specialty menu. “It’s fun to try wacky stuff and things that you don’t expect, and it’s a collaborative effort for the pizzas, which gives the staff ownership over the menu,” said Jon. This year, some of the winners included the Wonton-Amo Bae, which sports cream cheese, bacon, jalapeños, and raspberry drizzle. Another victor is the Leggo My Pizza, which consists of maple syrup, hot honey, sriracha, chicken, bacon, and pieces of belgian waffles. But Jon says Sunny’s is about way more than just pizza. “Being a locally owned place, I have a lot of connections in the community, and it’s cool to be able to support people’s sports teams or have benefits for people who have fallen on hard times,” he said.

This year, Sunny’s will be going on its fourth year in business. Jon remarked that he has learned something new each year and that it is rewarding to continually give back to the community. “It’s nice to be able to support local initiatives when we’ve had so many people support us,” he said. Last year Jon held a competition to create a mural on the restaurant's wall. After 17 submissions, Jon settled on local artist Wyatt Dickson’s idea to paint a Sioux Falls Wall of Notability mural. “I picked Wyatt’s design because I wanted it to have a local flavor, be socially shareable, and I wanted it to be something that had staying power,” explained Jon. Every year Oppold and Dickson nominate a notable figure from Sioux Falls to add to the wall, and Sunny’s throws a party to celebrate. This year’s honoree was Phil Shreck, chief meteorologist at Dakota News Now. Though Sunny passed away in February of this year, his likeness lives on in the logo, in photos, and on the mural. “He was just a goofy little smushy-faced guy who hung out,” said Jon, explaining why the pizzeria takes Sunny’s name. “And honestly, the dog is cuter than me,” he admitted. In June of this year, Jon opened The Orion Pub downtown, and he spends his days between the properties, saying that he is very happy to be doing what he loves. For Jon, it’s all about freedom to do business on his own terms, as well as being able to provide a shared space for his community. “Sunny’s isn’t just owned by me, it’s owned by the people that live in proximity. This is our home pizza place,” he said.

the praire dog What was conceived as a joke between two brothers and their best friend became a must-stop in the Black Hills. Brothers Michael and Jimmy Chidiac and friend, Ross Cargo, opened The Prairie Dog with one simple vision: To serve hot dogs in an unparalleled and exciting way. “At the time, Ross and I were talking about the Black Hills and what people never saw up here since we’re from Texas,” explained Michael. “We realized that we never saw food trucks and then we thought maybe we should sell hot dogs, because let’s be honest, no one has ever seen a hotdog food truck.” In the beginning years of the business, the mobile food truck traveled through various cities. During The Prairie Dogs' second season, the general manager at the time of Miner Brewing Company visited the food truck, fell in love with the food, and approached the brothers with the opportunity to
bring their truck to specific dates, like concerts and bingo. At the time, The Prairie Dog was set on a piece of property in Custer, but there was one thing holding the owners back. “We weren’t allowed to move the trailer according to the variance consistently, but we no longer wanted to move back and forth. We wanted to be in a permanent location,” said Michael. As the second season was drawing to a close, Michael and Jimmy reached out to Miner, proposing a seasonal partnership and residency on their brewery campus. “We were put in contact with Matt Keck, one of the owners, and he told us he would love to have us for special events and then we asked what his thoughts were on us being there permanently,” said Michael. After several communications Matt said, ‘Absolutely.’

The Chidiac brothers composed a proposal of expectations and potential gain, the three shook hands, and The Prairie Dog found its home in the summer of 2022. “The Prairie Dog has positively impacted both Miner Brewing and Prairie Berry Winery by bringing its loyal customer base along with their business,” shared Elliot Anderson, Miner Brewing Co.’s taproom manager. “It’s created the opportunity for both businesses' customer base to try something new while still enjoying a familiar meal or beverage.” The Prairie Dog food truck’s menu features an array of creative and delicious hot dog creations, each crafted with fresh, local, and highquality ingredients. From the classic Miner’s Mischief with its savory and complex flavors to
the Rushmore Rattler, topped with a bit of heat, there’s something for everyone. Every hot dog is carefully created to satisfy every customers' palates, with each layer from the bun to the curated topping, taking them on a journey of flavor with every bite. When biting into the Miner’s Mischief hot dog, customers will experience a combination of mustard, onions, and a homemade sauce containing 23 different ingredients to introduce a simple, yet sophisticated flavor. The Rushmore Rattler is dressed in a homemade medley of fresh jalapeño, green onions, garlic, and other fresh ingredients. To ensure the heat doesn’t overpower the palate, the bottom of the bun is lined with handshredded yellow cheddar cheese.

“If we’re going to put something on the menu, it has got to be something that no one else is doing and that we’re going to be the best at doing it, and it drives Jimmy crazy,” laughed Michael. “It drives me crazy in a good way because Michael will beat it and beat it, and just when we both agree that it’s perfect, he comes up with something else,” Jimmy added with a chuckle. For every new menu creation, Michael and Jimmy test them on new and existing customers. “Everything we do has a taste test. We don’t do this in a vacuum,” said Jimmy. “It’s friends, family, customers, everyone tries it. We’re very mindful that it’s not just what we like, but seeing what other people's thoughts are.”
The Prairie Dog not only sells hot dogs but also handcrafted sandwiches, which have become popular sellers. The must-try is The General Custer, a bison Philly cheesesteak. The duo designed the culinary treat after experimenting with different cheeses, onions, and pepper combinations in order to integrate the flavors nicely. “The General Custer is a very popular option among the brewing team,” stated Elliot. “Throw in an East River IPA and you have yourself a delicious summer meal.” The Chidiac brothers locally source their bison meat from Wild Idea, located in Rapid City. All fruits and vegetables are purchased from the farmers' market, but their bread and buns are top secret.
“WHEN WE DO OUR TASTE TESTS, WE DO THEM BLIND, SO OUR CUSTOMERS ARE QUITE LITERALLY PICKING WHAT THEY THINK IS BEST.”

“It’s so secret where we get the bread that I don’t even bring the boxes to work,” shared Michael. “We will not serve our products on any other bread.” Also included in the thought-out menu are homemade side dishes, adding flavor complements to each hot dog and sandwich. A signature is The Gold Rush, air-fried tater tots dressed with Miner’s Mischief 's sauce, shredded white cheddar cheese, crowned with a fried egg, and garnished with the jalapeño medley.
“The main duo this past season was the General Custer and The Gold Rush,” shared Jimmy. Customers are able to enjoy their hot dogs, sandwiches, and sides with a chilled glass of beer from Miner Brewing Company. The varying beers couple nicely with the variety of meats and cheeses The Prairie Dog menu has to offer, says Elliot. “The beers that pair well with their dishes are East River IPA, Scarlett Red Ale, and West River Pale Ale,” he shared.

Prairie Dog’s commitment to quality extends beyond its hot dogs and hoagies to its packaging. Every order is wrapped in eco-friendly food boxes and paired with functional and purposeful utensils. “We could have easily slapped our food onto a paper plate or stuffed it into a Styrofoam container, but we wanted to be different and treat orders carefully,” said Michael. The Chidiac brothers work on three centered pillars: Quality, speed, and price.
Every topping is made in-house, providing the best quality ingredients and control. Their internal systems are optimized to have orders ready in 15 minutes or less. At The Prairie Dog, Michael and Jimmy ensure that their customers will always feel like they received a fair deal. Jimmy and Michael share that after all, it’s their customers and their experiences that count.

VINYAHD RESTAURANT GROUP For Riccardo Tarabelsi, the thought of a career in the restaurant industry had never crossed his mind until his wife, Marybeth, was pregnant with their first child. “At the time, my wife was a registered nurse and had to be put on bed rest, so I was working three 12-hour shifts at Sioux Valley Hospital [now Sanford Health],” said Riccardo. He decided it was time to acquire a second job when Marybeth suggested he work at Spezia Restaurant. “I told her I knew nothing about restaurants, but then she replied with, ‘Well, you’re Italian,’” chuckled Riccardo. “I jokingly told
her that my nationality wasn’t a prerequisite to working in an Italian restaurant, but still I went to see if there was an opportunity there.” He continued, “The manager said, ‘Oh you’re Italian? You’re hired.’” Riccardo began his culinary career as a server but advanced a few months later to an assistant manager role. “I left healthcare forever, got into restaurants in 2000, managed Spezia for four years, followed it by becoming a wine sales representative, became the general manager at Westward Ho Country Club [now The Country Club of Sioux Falls], returned to Spezia’s for a short time, and then

helped grow Fernson Brewing Company from scratch,” shared Riccardo. As his extensive resume of experience expanded, Riccardo wondered if he could open a restaurant for himself and his family. Four years later, the opportunity presented itself and Riccardo and Marybeth decided it was time to open their own establishment. “Luckily for us, Prairie Berry Winery had moved out of their building on 8th Street. We met the owners and got a deal done,” explained Riccardo. “My wife and I have always been entrepreneurial, but our first of many family-owned ventures started in 2018.”

No, it's not a typo. The word vineyard is pronounced vinyahd (vin-yahd) in Massachusetts, where Riccardo and Marybeth resided before moving back to South Dakota. The popular spot for visitors and locals is Martha’s Vineyard, which is special for the couple as it’s where Riccardo proposed to Marybeth in 1996.

r wine bar & kitchen The Tarabelsis introduced R Wine Bar & Kitchen to the Sioux Falls community in 2018. After five years in business, the restaurant remains a staple along the East Bank of downtown Sioux Falls. Taking up space in the historic Franklin Building, originally built in 1900, R Wine Bar’s atmosphere warmly invites its customers into a charming oasis. “The building is made of quartzite and has an old world feel to it,” said Riccardo. “It feels warm with large wooden beams, open rafters, and minimal artwork because the walls themselves are art.” R Wine Bar offers an extensive wine list that spans the globe. Everyone can find something they enjoy, regardless of whether they prefer red, white, or rosé. The bar also offers a variety of local craft beers. The bar’s extensive wine list includes everything from Italian and French classics, to lesser-known gems from different states and countries. All wine is available for purchase by the glass or by the bottle. The staff is always happy to help customers choose the appropriate wine for their taste. In addition to its sizeable wine list, R Wine Bar & Kitchen offers a menu of Italian classics. The fresh menu has been curated to complement the wines. In fact, the wine menu features a food pairing section. Riccardo says their most popular dishes include Pasta Al Limone, Bistecca Gorgonzola, Chilean Sea Bass, Swordfish Steak, Ricotta, and Bruschetta. With R Wine Bar & Kitchen and the Tarbelsi’s following ventures, their goal will remain to bring a piece of Italy to the Midwest.

vespa catering R Wine Bar & Kitchen is also home to Vespa Catering, the Tarabelsi’s second culinary endeavor. Introduced in 2021, Vespa caters to many events in Sioux Falls and the surrounding areas. “We’ve catered weddings, office events, birthday parties, and retirements,” shared Riccardo. “Basically if someone has a venue and needs food brought in, we can do that.” The catering menus are entirely customizable and can easily be designed as a buffet or a plated dinner. “We offer pasta of course, but we’ve done everything from steak, salmon, and vegetable lasagna,” said Riccardo. He adds that Vespa Catering is equipped to serve small parties to weddings of upwards of 400 people. At each of the Tarabelsi restaurants, they say, “Enter as friends, leave as family,” and when they cater an event, the team is dedicated to bringing the same sentiment.

Collectively, R Wine Bar & Kitchen, Vespa Catering, Brix Wine Bar, and Maribella Ristorante make up the Vinyahd Restaurant Group. According to Riccardo and Marybeth, the family aspect of their businesses makes Vinyahd unique. Whether it’s a staff member or a customer, they think of them as irreplaceable. “That has been our motto since day one, and it continues to stem from past experiences with different companies,” shared Riccardo. Since 2018, the Tarabelsis have grown their roots tremendously, expanding Italian culture and heritage to downtown.
“The reason we’ve tripled down with all three of our locations being downtown is that we’re huge believers in downtown Sioux Falls,” admitted Riccardo. “Not only as a destination, but there’s a destination within them that we’ve created.”

THE SPLASH BARK BY SDK To beat the summer heat, Teri Jo Olean and her son set out to an outdoor splash pad made just for kids. In the midst of watching her son run around, enjoying the cool water, Olean experienced a light bulb moment. “I thought, ‘How fun would this be for dogs to be playing and splashing in the water?’ I should add this to our existing daycare program,” said Olean. She began toying around with the idea and conjured up the thought of a pet-friendly splash park being accessible all year long. “The ideas just kept following, as I thought it should have a bar for owners and a designated play area for kids,” Olean recollected. After 18 months of designing, planning, and research The Splash Bark by Smoken Dakota Kennels [SDK] opened in Harrisburg at the end of January 2020. The Splash Bark allows dogs of all sizes and their owners to escape ordinary day-to-day life and discover a slice of paradise. The 605 team was able to experience this ticket to paradise with our dogs on a chilly November day. Alongside me and my brother's Dachshund, Snoop, was our multimedia designer and photographer Cailyn Patterson, with her two rescues, Mako and Fergus, and magazine co-owners Alana and John Snyder with their Boston Terriers, Maverick and Merlin.

With each of our dogs wiggling and jumping with excitement, we were introduced to Olean, president and owner, SDK park director, Ragan Rommann, and the rest of their team. Our furry friends couldn’t wait to experience the indoor water dog park. When Rommann opened the small entrance gate, Snoop, Mako, Fergus, Merlin, and Maverick dashed into the park to meet other staff members' dogs. Mako and Fergus had no hesitation when it came to the water, while Snoop was a little more reserved before trotting in later on. “Our synchronized water features are specially configured for a dog’s play style,” said Olean. “The park also has a puddle play area in the middle, which is three inches deep, so even the smallest splashers can enjoy it.” She adds that the water is 100% fresh and chemical-free. Other water features include a raining palm tree, a spray beach ball, two water-flowing arcs, and three hoops. If a pooch is more hesitant towards water, like Snoop, they can still enjoy the park as it's designed to incorporate different activities. “We’ve also included dry play areas with tunnels, climbers, and four bubble machines for entertainment of all ages and sizes of dogs,” explained Olean.

The park prioritizes safety with proper sanitation and hygiene practices, and dedicated staff ensuring the well-being of all visiting pups. Each team member is diligently trained on dog body language and proper play etiquette to help supervise dog interactions. “They can intervene if any aggressive behavior or unsafe play is observed,” explained Olean. Before a dog is allowed to enter the park on their first visit, the owner must show proof of updated Rabies, DHPP, and Bordetella vaccinations. In an extra effort to prevent the spread of diseases and parasites, the park is sanitized daily.
“The proof of vaccination requirements is also a portal to all of SDK’s services including boarding, daycare, training, and grooming.”

Hosting paranormal investigations and psychic readings at the Historic Adams House with Black Hills Paranormal Investigations and Sacred Soul LLC is one of my favorite events we sponsor.
streaming stories
I’m fond of various streaming services as I can watch some of my favorite shows from the comfort of my couch. Some of my favorites include Breaking Bad, Ted Lasso, Peaky Blinders, The Morning Show, The Killing, and Bosch. They offer a great story, incredible acting, and sometimes a positive message.
song bird
Music makes my heart sing. Deadwood hosts a variety of incredible concerts, many of them free on Main Street and in Outlaw Square. My favorites have been The Young Dubliners and Big Head Todd and the Monsters.

5 historical facts about speirs 1
I was working in gaming in Deadwood for 17 years when the position of communications director opened for the Adams Museum & House. I decided to take a leap of faith for a job centered on history. What I’ve learned is that every day you learn something new in any profession, however in history, some of the things you learn may blow your mind.

My dog is a Welsh Pembroke Corgi, named Atticus Finch. His name comes from two books, To Kill A Mockingbird and The Story of Edgar Sawtelle. He’s my sun, moon, and stars rolled into one.
3
I’ve been on two Jeep rides in the Hills in the past two years. It was truly one of the most fun experiences that I’ve had in a while. I highly recommend it!
4
I hope to visit Moccasin Springs Natural Mineral Springs/Spa in Hot Springs sometime this winter or next spring. I had the pleasure of going there for the first time in April with a friend on a day trip. It was a blast!
5
Italy is on my bucket list. I love the culture and would love to try some of their red wine right from the vineyard.

LIFESTYLE
volunteer advocate
I enjoy volunteering throughout the Deadwood community. I help co-chair the K-9 Keg Pull in January with my friends, Sharon Martinisko and Bobby Rock. I’ve also been a judge for Deadweird for several years with Deadwood mayor David Ruth, Jr. and friend Melody Dennis. I’m always honored to judge as the event brings out brilliant, creative ideas from eventgoers.
escaping reality
Reading tends to be a relaxing form of entertainment for me. For a big departure from reality, I enjoy reading the Ann Charles Deadwood Mystery series, and Ann Charles and Sam Lucky’s Deadwood Undertaker series.
signature bites
I love going out to eat to enjoy a meal. In Deadwood, my favorite restaurants include the Deadwood Social Club—the salmon is delicate and delicious and they offer an impressive wine list. Deadwood Bad Lands3 and Mustang Sally’s all offer fun burgers.
calm, cool, collected
One of my favorite places to go is Mount Moriah Cemetery. It’s such a beautiful and peaceful spot to sit on a bench, relax, meditate, and let your cares slip away. I also enjoy the Deadwood Overlook—you can always capture a great photo any time of the year, or hike to Harris Franklin’s and Seth Bullock's gravesites.

605 Profile
Byron Banas iak written by Alana Snyder + portrait by John Snyder
Sioux Falls’ Byron Banasiak is behind some of the most inspirational images and films of South Dakota. The travel photographer and documentary filmmaker uses his talents as part of the South Dakota Department of Tourism team showing the rest of the world the people and places of our state. “I want people to be surprised when they see the photos and videos and ask themselves, ‘Is that really in South Dakota?’ And for people who are from South Dakota, I want them to see them and feel proud to live here,” he said. Banasiak spends almost 40% of the year on the road getting to know people in each town and capturing its essence. “The more I travel around the state, the more I fall in love with it. And I love growing the community's in Sioux Falls,” he said. “There was a time in my life where I used to hate on South Dakota. My entire perspective has changed. I enjoy being a cheerleader for the state, and can't wait to keep surprising outsiders.” Get to know the chief photographer and cinematographer.
When did you become passionate about photography & cinematography? I first got really passionate about cinematography in college. I made a viral party video, and that opened my eyes to that idea that I could actually make a living doing it. I committed and spent nearly three years traveling around the world. During the trip, I got really into street photography. I fell in love with photography on that first trip, and now it's a constant balance between the two. My favorite thing about all of it is telling stories.
What are some of your favorite spots to hang out in South Dakota? I love camping out near Spearfish. There's a creek that runs through the town, and it's a perfect spot for a cold bath in the morning. I do love Wall Drug. My family homesteaded there. Every time I drive through, I grab a Maple Donut for the road.
What South Dakota event is a highlight for you to capture? I love photographing the Buffalo Roundup [& Arts Festival]. The first year I had the opportunity to photograph it, I was riding an adrenaline high for the rest of the day. I got to ride in the back of a pickup truck and basically ride with the stampede across Custer State Park. I'll remember that for the rest of my life.
What are some of your favorite places to eat in the state, & what’s your go-to item? I'll break this down into breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Breakfast is M.B. Haskett Delicatessen in Sioux Falls. I get the American so often there that they don't even need to ask anymore. Lunch would be Black Hills Burger and Bun Co. in Custer. Any burger is going to blow your mind. Just be sure to get the sweet potato waffle fries with maple aioli. And dinner would be Skogen Kitchen in Custer. Their menu changes pretty often, so I go with whatever they recommend.
What’s a highlight of your career? The second month of working at Tourism, I got to go on a weeklong TV shoot for a show called Epic Trails. We hiked the Centennial Trail, cliff jumped into Sheridan Lake and rode hot air balloons into a farmer’s field where we drank mimosas with them at 6 a.m. We rock climbed, camped, hiked the Badlands during a storm. It was maybe the best week of my life. And I got to photograph it all for work. It changed my perspective on our state.
