A fresh year calls for a fresh start. It's always inspirational kicking it off with the Business Issue, visiting the new, the old, and the unique. I was so thrilled when the makers behind InsideOutMoz wrote in, making me want to purchase all of the Mozambique-inspired fashions. These two are work and couple goals for sure.

Last year was… let’s just say interesting. Despite that, many businesses throughout the state have found ways to prosper, and some daring entrepreneurs were even bold enough to start a new business. Even we here at 605 decided to shake things up a little bit. Look at that fresh cover! Earlier this year we got to check out Climberz over in Tea. Even though I was sore for an entire week, it was a great experience with an incredible and knowledgeable staff running it. DaDa Gastropub seemed to be all the rage over the holiday season, and I get why! The revamped space is beautiful, fun, and artsy. With the month break between issues, it’s good to be back in the swing of things. We missed bringing our readers fresh, new content, and hopefully you missed us, too. Happy New Year, everyone. Cheers!

Stitched Together

InsideOutMoz by Dawn Geertsema “InsideOutMoz is what we are, what we represent in this world, what we want to present the world, how we express ourselves,” said Nádia Muando-Jacomet, owner of InsideOutMoz Design on Etsy. While Nádia says that she went to school for music, that’s not what she sees herself doing long term. “Music was maybe my parents’ passion, but it is not my passion,” she said. “Fashion is something that I went out and had to find for myself.” Much of her inspiration for each piece comes from traditional Mozambican patterns.

“The tradition says that women must have capulana [a traditional fabric] to wrap around the skirt and the waist to carry the baby,” said Nádia. Her husband Sam Jacomet explains that in Mozambique, women are expected to be a wife, mother, and housekeeper. But Nádia wasn’t having it. “I was like, ‘Mm, no. I’m not wearing it like this,’” said Nádia about Mozambican traditional garments. “If I’m going to wear it, I’m going to make something.” In 2017, Nádia took six months away from her job in Mozambique, Africa, to go to Washington, D.C. where she showcased her clothing designs. “We bring the patterns and mix with normal fabrics so that we can have a more modern garment,” she said. “We try to bring the vintage into the African into the modern.”

But before long, she had to return home to work at an insurance agency.

After over a year and loads of fiancé visa paperwork, Sam and Nádia tied the knot on November 30, 2019.

“I had to be out of fashion for one year, and I was not doing what I wanted to do,” explained Nádia.

Back in Sam’s home state of South Dakota, Nádia opened her shop on Etsy in the late spring of 2020, selling her contemporary, modern clothing with Sam’s help.

Sam says he’s always wanted to explore the world outside of South Dakota. “Especially from a small town where I came from, it seemed so distant, but I was determined,” he said. “My wife and I share that determination of following the dream at any cost, and that mindset landed us together.” Stationed in Mozambique with the Peace Corps at the time, Sam met Nádia when she struck up a conversation with his visiting friend. Sam wound up modeling some garments for Nádia’s photoshoot.

16 |

“This is what I want to do,” said Nádia. “This is my opportunity to show myself to the world.” Sam orders fabrics and works on the business side of things from his office, while Nádia creates her own clothing designs and handmakes the garments herself upstairs. Sam works on marketing, advertising, photography, and more, holding up their business with no experience. He says YouTube has been a big help.

“We try to do it right, and with our mistakes we’re diving into all the different aspects of running a business,” he said. “I make a lot of mistakes that wind up being good,” explained Nádia. “And then I tell her that it’s fine, and she has to redo everything,” Sam added with a laugh. And while Sam does odds and ends to keep the business up and running, he also has an Etsy shop of his own where he sells vintage clothing that he finds thrifting. With InsideOutMoz and ClothingMyVintage, the couple is able to work together in fashion full time, hoping to make each of their customers happy. “We are real people,” said Nádia. “We are worried about you being happy with what you receive.”

“We really care about our process, and we care about our quality,” added Sam. “We just want to make good things and present that to people.” On Etsy so far, InsideOutMoz has made nearly 200 sales, and ClothingMyVintage has made over 500, though each shop has made sales outside of that platform as well. Nádia and Sam were determined to defy the limitations of their lives, and together, they did just that. Sam left off, “Even though we come from two different parts of the world, we share the same outlook and purpose in life, which ultimately includes serving others, following our dreams, and to empower others to block out the doubters.”

OPERA

Empowering You on Your Financial Journey GROW > SAVE > LEARN

H O U S E by Dawn Geertsema

In 2018, The Goss Opera House in downtown Watertown sat vacant with locked doors and blackedout windows, cast in darkness. What once was a popular place for entertainment, fun, and laughter nearly 130 years prior seemed dreary and hopeless. Former executive director Missy Sinner says that from 2008 to 2018, the previous owner was hosting events in the building as it was, renovating as he could. But he couldn’t keep it up.

Our goals at Voyage Federal Credit Union are to zempower our members – by thoroughly informing and educating them – as well as prepare and guide them for the journey ahead.

C U LT U R E + E N T E R TA I N M E N T

All 37,000 square feet of history, she says, were crumbling to the earth. “The building would have been condemned if someone didn’t come in and fix it immediately,” said Sinner. So the Friends of The Goss Opera House LLC stepped in, hoping to return the grand opera house to its former grandeur with the campaign “Light Up The Goss.”

R a p i d R enovations It needed lots of TLC to get there. “Because of the building’s age and size, we knew there would be more surprises,” said Sinner, the executive director at the time. “Our fundraising goal was a working goal.”

“The minute we put the steel beams in, it’s like the posture of the building was corrected,” explained Sinner. She says that utility bills are nearly a quarter of what they once were.

Ultimately, the renovation ended up costing roughly $5 million.

“With the renovations we did, we’re already seeing huge paybacks, so it’ll hopefully pay for itself one day,” said Sinner.

Sinner says some of the biggest renovations included replacing a truss in the roof, adding a modern HVAC system and air conditioning, and other structural upgrades.

In nearly every corner, the Friends of The Goss Opera House also completed many cosmetic changes, such as plaster, flooring, fixtures, and décor.

Charles Goss, the opera house’s namesake, was a jack of many trades. He had eight children with his wife, but only one daughter survived. He later married his daughter’s nanny and had four more boys with her. When he moved to Watertown, he built up what he called a “Goss block,” but it burned down in 1887. Despite the community’s pleas for him to build a hotel, he instead built an opera house, the third one in Watertown at the time. Now, 130 years later, it's the only opera house to remain. FACT Gray Construction, the company that completed the renovations, donated a portion of what they would have been paid in order to bring The Goss to its current glory.

The attention to history and the attention to detail really makes it an event just to tour it.” -Jamie Mack

With much effort, the Friends of The Goss tried to save as many original murals as possible. The art is everywhere including the Prairie Lakes Landing and the Reliabank Theatre, which is the main opera hall.

“On the proscenium archway on the stage, you can see there’s a stencil design on that, and that was taken off of something we had found that was original,” explained Sinner. Inside the Goss, there is still one space that has been preserved so guests can see the dilapidated state the building had been in prior to the renovation: Maud’s Room, formerly known as Annie’s Room.

“Every day, I have this giddy feeling as I walk through there,” said current executive director Jamie Mack. “There’s a chandelier in the middle of the opera hall and I’ve never seen anything like it up close. It’s gorgeous.”

In the space, plaster is falling from the wall, the floorboards are separating, and exposed nails can be seen everywhere.

Those that could not be saved were refurbished and used to beautify elsewhere.

“It’s a perfect example of what all the rooms looked like before the renovation,” said Mack. “Then if you look at the other rooms, it’s beautiful.”

Fiery Beginnings The story about Annie’s Room, now named Maud’s Room, that was being told in the past was one of the main reasons people used to visit The Goss. But according to Sinner, it was false. Here’s the truth: Maud Alexander was set on fire by her 28-yearold son, Orville. She ran up and down the hallways yelling for help before a neighbor helped extinguish her. She was then taken to the hospital, where she passed away the next morning.

A P l ac e For th e A rts After about a year of renovations, Sinner says The Goss opened with its first show in years in July 2020, serving as “a creative, artistic hub for the town.” “We’re hoping to be a resource for a lot of areas in the arts,” said Mack. The Goss serves as host to various concerts, musicals, plays, art exhibits, weddings, showers, classes, and other events. “Whether it’s a bible study or an extravagant event, we can take care of all of those things now,” said Mack. Anyone can rent out spaces with select rooms starting at $25 an hour. “We hope to be that for the community: an allencompassing area that people can come and feel comfortable trying different parts of the arts,” she added. With the help of the community, the Friends of The Goss Opera House have succeeded in lighting up the historic opera house. “Now that The Goss is complete, our vision is to light up downtown through The Goss,” said Sinner. “We would like to utilize this great big jewel to lift everyone up and make downtown a destination.”

“There is nothing more satis f ying than starting with an ide a , bu ilding it with yo ur hands , and then s it ting back into it once it’s finis hed,” said Lu ke Leis chner, owner of Oak Hollow Cus tom Woodworks in R apid Cit y.

Leischner’s interest in woodworking began when he was 14. He spent summers creating and working hard on his skills before his hobby hit the back burner while he was in college. “I picked it back up after graduation, realizing people appreciated what I was building them and I could potentially make a living off doing what I loved,” said Leischner. In 2016, he Googled “how to start an LLC,” and Oak Hollow Custom Woodworks was born. Now he builds furniture for clients all over the Midwest and Mountain West. He continued, “It was not easy at all times, but I can confidently say I get to do something I love every day.”

CUSTOMERS COME TO THE WEBSITE LOOKING FOR… high quality, custom-built furniture.

I’ll build whatever you can dream up: anything from fly fishing nets to fireplace mantles to bed frames to dining room tables.

THE BEST PART OF MY JOB IS… a tossup between the satisfaction of learning new skills or working with customers who truly appreciate what I’m doing. ONE OF MY FAVORITE PROJECTS HAS BEEN… a set of six dining room chairs and a matching

dining room table. This project was particularly meaningful because it was my first experience with designing and building chairs, and the lumber was from the farmstead where my grandma grew up. It’s cool to think she may have adventured in the trees that went into the project.

THE CLIENTS ARE INVOLVED… from the initial design all the way to the final details. I like to keep my clients involved by sending updates and photos throughout their build to help create an experience. One of my favorite moments is the first time a customer runs their hand over their new piece.

“It can be frustrating learning how to cut dovetail joints or turning a chair leg on the lathe for the first time. But once I finally get that perfect fit or shape and deliver the finished piece to a customer’s home, it’s worth it.”

SOMETHING I’M DOING WITH THE BUSINESS RIGHT NOW THAT I’M EXCITED ABOUT IS… taking on

different types of projects that are testing my abilities. I currently have orders for dining room chairs, a buffet, and a kitchen island, and I’m working on them at the same time. They’re very different pieces and require different styles of woodworking, which is helping me continue to become a wellrounded craftsman. I’m learning how to work on a larger project, like kitchen cabinets, and then transition to hand-cut joinery for chairs.

MY FAVORITE WAY TO SPEND MY LEISURE TIME IS… anything that involves being outside. Living in the Black Hills, I can

go for a bike ride on Iron Mountain Road, a run up Black Elk Peak, a swim at Sheridan Lake, or chase some sharp-tailed grouse with my shotgun. The hard part is deciding which to do first.

SOMETHING THAT IS INFLUENCING ME RIGHT NOW IS… Scandinavian-style furniture. It’s simplistic and clean, yet

complex. There have been many great furniture designers from that part of the world. Check out Børge Mogensen or Hans Wegner.

CUSTOM COMMISSIONS Aside from odd items like cutting boards and fly fishing nets, Oak Hollow doesn’t have much of an inventory. The work is mostly commissioned furniture, and Leischner will build virtually anything his customers can come up with.

IN RAPID CITY, I LOVE TO GRAB… breakfast at Tally’s [Silver Spoon], mid-afternoon cold brew at Pure Bean [Coffeehouse], and then pizza and beer at Independent Ale House in the evening makes for a great Saturday. Outside the Rapid City limits, Skogen Kitchen in Custer is our go-to for a special outing. SOMEONE LOCAL WHO I ADMIRE IS… The owners of Sol Vibe Studio in Rapid City, Aaron and Kelsey Parker. Their love and passion for building people up and developing community is infectious. ONE THING I LOVE ABOUT SOUTH DAKOTA IS… the landscapes. It never ceases to amaze me that I can be standing in a forest and then walking through a sea of grass, stretching for miles, in a matter of minutes.

605 Tries

CLIMBERZ by Alana Snyder

“I CREATED THE IDEA IN MY HEAD,” SAID TRAVIS KLINGHAGEN, OWNER AND DESIGNER OF CLIMBERZ. THE 605 TEAM ARRIVED AT THE 4,000-SQUAREFOOT FACILITY IN TEA AS PART OF OUR ANNUAL COMPANY RETREAT.

Klinghagen greeted us with professional trainer and marketing manager Johnny Monroe, who they dubbed as “first mate.” The large building consisted of approximately 3,500 square feet of bouldering walls for all ages, including a toddler section, a kids section, an open climbing section, and a training section. Bouldering, they explained, is a style of rock climbing done close to the ground without the use of ropes and harnesses. Though it was indoors with plenty of protection, I was a little nervous. The crew soon helped that subside.

“The thing that we really want to stress is climbing safely. That’s why we go over [all of the safety tips at the beginning]. Our mats are extra thick compared to what a lot of gyms have to keep it even more safe for people to do bouldering,” said Klinghagen. “Going through a proper orientation, we’re teaching people how to fall and how to fall properly and keep them injury-free.” He continued, “After that, it’s coming in here, learning how your body works, grabbing onto stuff. It’s really simple. It’s a really natural thing for people to do because we’ve been doing it ever since we were little kids.”

We make sure that they’re smiling from the second they step foot [through the door] to the second that they leave.” -Johnny Monroe

I did learn how to fall properly, but volunteered to start taking pictures of others trying the first section of climbing walls. The Climberz guides explained there were eight levels of difficulty by color. Blues and greens were basic (a.k.a. 605 friendly). The ratings are V0 all the way to V8. “In bouldering right now, it’s an infinite scale technically. It goes from V0 all the way to V16,” said Klinghagen. “We currently have [bouldering] problems that might be V8, so we’re halfway up there. When you watch professionals, you can imagine how good they really are.”

He continued, “Instead of letting that discourage you, it’s something to realize that those people have put a ton of time into that. The average person who comes in doesn’t worry about how hard they’re climbing, it’s what kind of experience they’re having in here and with the community.” For example, Climberz opened this past June, and Monroe started climbing soon after. “I started [coming here] back in July, and now I work here,” he said. “You try it, and you’re able to step outside of your box and become a little better as a person. Just try something new. You never know where it’ll take you.” The Climberz duo said forgiveness and humbleness also go a long way when you’re a beginner. 605 editorial assistant Dawn Geertsema impressed them with some of these traits during our session. “I think [Dawn] is a good example of someone coming in and having a little fear of heights and just realizing that this isn’t all about doing a lot of pullups,” said Klinghagen. “It’s about learning how to go through a challenge and go through that mental process of, ‘How can I go from here to this next point?’” As the team was taken around to different routes, 605 lead multimedia designer Jordan Cushman took on a challenge of climbing an angled wall, where if the person reached the top and touched the pumpkin, they would win a t-shirt. And he did it. Soon we were clapping and cheering for each other on each section. They even gave me a pity clap and laugh as I toppled down after barely leaving the mat.

“I’ve been a part of a lot of sports, and the climbing community is the most engaging and most friendly group. You can go to places in the country, and they’re all really accepting and want you to get up the wall.” -Travis Klinghagen

Klinghagen said moments like this are one of the main reasons he started Climberz. It wasn’t to just have indoor climbing, but to emphasize encouragement and support. “This is where I want to take my life,” he said. “I wanted to grow a climbing community in this area.” The business has already welcomed 100 members, and though they hit the “century mark,” Klinghagen said he knows everyone by name. “We’re just trying to have that all-encompassing environment where the community just wants to build within itself. We’ve done that so far, and it’s been steadily progressing,” he said. “Our member base is turning into basically a climbing family.”

One hour and sore arms later, the 605 team lined up to purchase some merch and check our climbing shoes back in. Several of us were already talking about coming back and getting to the next difficulty section. Klinghagen said that mentality is what it’s all about. “You’re able to find something in the gym that’s a little bit more comfortable for you, and then you get a little bit more confidence with the next climb,” he described. “Before you know it, you’re this really brave, confident climber in the gym, and you just feel like a different person.”

by Dawn Geertsema “I wasn’t looking to buy a house,” said Jodi Stahl , lead account executive of C lick R ain in Sioux Falls. In 2017, Stahl was following Ashley Statema on Instagram. Statema posted all about her family and their house.

The 1960s house Stahl had been following was listed on the market, and she decided to check it out when she got back home.

“I remember thinking, I love the neighborhood that she’s in,” said Stahl. “It looks so cute and quiet.”

“It was an inspiring post that changed my life,” she said.

At the time, Stahl was in the middle of her year-long lease and being a homeowner was the last thing on her mind.

She made an offer and in October 2017, the house was hers. And when she moved into the three-bedroom, two-bathroom home, she says she really just felt like herself.

But one day while Stahl was out of state, Statema’s latest post popped up on her feed.

“Within the walls of my home, I could really grow up a little bit,” explained Stahl.

She started to cook more. She delved into more hobbies. Inside her office, working from home, she loves basking in the natural light. She says she just learned more about herself. Both inside and out, Stahl keeps up countless plants. “The curb appeal has been really fun to keep up, learning about the plants when I moved in,” said Stahl. And inside, the greenery ties into her neutral and wood-toned décor. “I love the wood f loors,” said Stahl. “It feels natural and cozy, and they warm up the space a lot.”

Stahl describes her decorating style as “cozy minimalism.” Woodgrain and lamplight introduce a ton of cozy vibes come nightfall. Some of her favorite pieces are local finds and those that have been gifted to her. “I find value in gifts,” said Stahl, explaining that she doesn’t often buy décor herself. “When someone gives me a gift that feels really meaningful, I want to display it.” For Stahl, owning a house isn’t as scary as people make it out to be.

You’re off to a new adventure when things break, but you learn a lot in the process of owning something and making it your own.”

Stahl says she’s had her bedroom in each of the home’s three options because of some advice she received. “If you want to put your bed in the middle of the kitchen, you can because that baby is yours,” said Stahl, restating some of her favorite advice. While the home is hers, she also loves to share it with others. Hospitality is important to Stahl. “It’s such a gift to be able to invite others into your home and share a meal—that act of breaking bread together,” said Stahl. Along with hosting family and friends, Stahl also rents out one of her bedrooms to a tenant. “It’s really about doing life together,” she said. “Everyone is at their own part of their journey, and we can invite people in.”

It was never a pipe dream or a goal I was working toward,” said Thach. “I was a company woman intent on realizing the vision of other entrepreneurs.” She was forced to make a decision: stay at her job of five years or move to spend more time with her terminally ill mother. “With the job in Aberdeen and my mother in Sioux Falls, time felt like it was slipping through my fingers with each three-hour drive,” she said. Marshmallow, chiles, and cinnamon. That transformed the lounge portion of Icon rebranding into DaDa Gastropub (the event hall will remain unchanged) with a reopening in last October. As the company’s website explains, Dada, or Dadaism, was an art movement of the European avant-garde in the early 20th century. As the movement rebelled against conventional thought, Weiland says DaDa Gastropub hopes to do the same with its menu and performance art. “It made sense for us because of where we want to be able to go moving forward,” he said. “We don’t want to be stuck into one little thing. We want to be able to continue to express ourselves in any of the paths we’re running down, whether it be beverages, cuisine, or entertainment, which we will hope to continue at a later date.”

The lounge has been reimagined with additions of greenery, vintage finds, and furniture built by team members. A stage remains in the space, but a wide range of seating and table options have been added. Though it appears to look more like a restaurant, Weiland says DaDa is “bar forward” with an elevated food menu. “A gastropub is just a bar, which is something that we’re trying to still convey,” he said. “Some people think we’re only a restaurant.” Icon Lounge was already known for having ramen at a limited capacity, but now patrons can enjoy it during regular hours. The Ramen includes a soft egg, mushrooms, bamboo shoots, green onions, and house “noods.”

Dada Gastropub is at 402 North Main Avenue and is open Tuesday through Saturday from 4 p.m. to midnight.

FACT Many of the lights are pieces by Sioux Falls artist Steve Bormes, including the larger chandeliers created using swiss cheese vats.

“I looked, and the first time I made ramen at Icon was 2017,” said Weiland, who is also a chef and general manager of DaDa.

Other bite options include sandwiches, like the Spicy Fried Chicken with buttermilk brine, spicy mayo, pickles, and brioche.

A new item is the Kimchi Pancake, which has sweet potato, buckwheat, egg, plum syrup, pork floss, and bonito.

The gastropub also has dessert, like the Tres Leches Cake with crème anglaise, caramel, and meringue.

“A lot of our food is based on experiences that we’ve had as cooks, where we’ve gone to other countries or other cities and we’ve had a food experience that left an impact on us,” said Weiland.

Weiland noted that DaDa also has popular items from Parker’s Bistro, which is its sister company, like the Chislic and fries (with Dada Sauce).

A lot of staff are also part of or have come from Parker’s, like lead bartender (and twin brother to DaDa artist Rory) Arnie Cowger. “We’re really bringing both operations together and utilizing what talents we have,” said Weiland.

Arnie and crew have put together a drink menu that includes cocktails like a Flannel Man Old Fashioned with Bulleit Bourbon, pine and cranberry liqueur, and a dash of scotch. For those who want a cocktail tasting, there are options like the Boozy Flight with half pours of boozy beverages.

For those who want to avoid imbibing and dining indoors, DaDa offers to-go cocktails, including garnishes and frills like drink umbrellas. Arnie says to-go cocktails have been a hit. “Almost every to-go order has a to-go cocktail on it,” he said. “We thought we were going to have to sit here and try to explain to people what it was and try to sell them on it, and they’re like, ‘Wait a minute, I can have a like a restaurant-ready cocktail in my own home?’” DaDa has also started selling liquor along with having an inventory of mixers and garnish supplies. “Anything you see behind the bar here can be purchased off sale with competitive pricing,” said Arnie. “We have anything you would find at a liquor store and have the knowledge behind the bar in case you have any questions.” He smiled, “We’ll give you any recipe.”

“You would be hard pressed to find any other brewery-winery combo with a fifth generation winemaker that’s also the brewmaster,” said Casey Nordine, taproom hospitality manager at Miner Brewing Company. Over 20 years ago, Sandi Vojta was sitting at her kitchen table, drinking a brew she’d made, and discussing with her husband how to create a “unique South Dakota experience.” She started Prairie Berry Winery in Hill City and followed with Miner Brewing Company in 2013. In the Western Mall in Sioux Falls, there is a second location with both the brewery and the winery in Sioux Falls. Vojta utilizes family traditions to create drinks that are “classically crafted and South Dakota inspired.” “Coming from Europe to South Dakota, [Vojta’s family brought] with them so many old world traditions and [added] a South Dakota flair to them,” said Nordine. Along with the Czechoslovakian winemaking and brewing traditions, Nordine says Miner nods to the Hill City area as it’s built on what was once a tin mine. “There’s this cool montage of being part of the Black Hills, harkening back to the mining history,” he continued. Just miles outside of Hill City, there are national parks and various trails nearby.

“Our utmost company value is making the world a better place one person and one day at a time,” said Nordine. Miner focuses on giving back to the community by doing highway cleanups and hosting Beer and Bingo events, partnering with local nonprofits. The brewery also works hard to minimize its environmental footprint. Due to the pandemic, all Miner’s events, from big concerts to Beer and Bingo, have been put on hold. While the brewery is at half capacity, a heated tent has been added outside as well as a handful of small, heated igloos to allow for more space for patrons to socially distance. He says the brewery is so thankful for every guest who has kept its doors open during this time of uncertainty. “We get so much support from the people around here,” said Nordine. “We want to do everything we could to keep our staff safe, our guests safe, and still offer a great experience.”

HIPPIE HAVEN by Dawn Geertsema In an effort to create and offer more sustainable options for everyday items to the world, Callee Ackland started Bestowed Essentials.

photos by Cadey Reisner “Our Bestowed Essentials products are in over 200 stores in the U.S. and in Canada, said Ackland. After noticing a need for an eco-friendly business in the Black Hills, the manufacturing business moved to Rapid City in 2018.

“Everybody’s journey to live more sustainably is different because everybody’s life is different.” -Callee Ackland

Some ways that Ackland says people can start on the journey of being more sustainable include reducing single-use items, reusing current items, reconsidering purchases, and doing research. Ackland also offers the weekly Hippie Haven Podcast in which she speaks with various ecofriendly, sustainable leaders to learn more about how she and others can live harmoniously with the rest of the planet. “We don’t just have products, we’re also a community space,” she said. T H E B U S I N E S S I S S U E feb r u ar y 2 021

Within the community space, Hippie Haven hosts small business pop-up events, DIY workshops, community swaps, and more. The store is a recycling drop off for items that general city recycling won’t typically process, such as oral care waste, razors, contact lenses, tennis balls, glasses, and printer cartridges. For anyone wanting to read a new book, the store has a reading nook that doubles as a free library where anyone is welcome to borrow any books or magazines.

“As our business grew and we were able to, we decided we wanted to open a store right in the heart of downtown and be able to expand what we offer to the community,” explained Ackland. Hippie Haven opened its doors about a year ago, offering eco-friendly products for all parts of life including shampoo, biodegradable kitchen products, toothbrushes, crayons, and baby powder. Currently, Ackland has five hired staff members, one of which is a dog named Mowgli. He’s the store greeter. Ackland says Hippie Haven is passionate about the zero waste movement and works hard to make as little waste as possible. The store disposes of less than 10 pounds of waste every month. “It’s not possible to create no trash,” she said. “We live in a linear economy rather than a circular economy, but it’s important to do the best you can.” Each order made online is shipped in the most sustainable way available and without any plastic packaging.

“What I see for the future is just becoming more of a community space, a space that really lives up to our name of Hippie Haven.”

-Callee Ackland

In the future, Ackland hopes that Hippie Haven will live up to its name to become “a safe, welcome space for like-minded people to find each other and gather together.” Bestowed Essentials is moving out of the back room of Hippie Haven and into its own manufacturing warehouse, and with the extra space she hopes to host more events to help get the word out. “We’re really proud of the work we do,” said Ackland. “People think we’re just a store, but we’re so much more than that.”

Ackland stressed, “Every single one of us is capable of making a difference, and we just have to decide what kind of difference we want to make, what’s important to us, and go live by our core values.”

605 Profile

Emerson Weber by Dawn Geertsema

“The amazing thing about this book is that it just happened,” said young author Emerson Weber. “We never planned to write a book, but when HarperCollins [Publishers] reached out we just couldn’t say no.” Back in May of 2020, 11-year-old Weber went viral on countless news platforms for writing letters to thank her mail carrier, Doug. On January 5, 2021, she released Sincerely, Emerson: A Girl, Her Letter, and the Helpers All Around Us, a picture book she authored on the subject. “I just wanted to spread the word about sometimes overlooked but always important people that make our lives better,” Weber explained. While most picture books take nearly two years to finish, the true story of Sincerely, Emerson took a mere few months for Weber to write and Jaclyn Sinquett to illustrate. The 605 team connected with Weber to hear more about her journey to publication, where she wants to go from here, and some humbling advice.

5 QUESTIONS WITH WEBER WHAT WAS THE BEST PART OF WORKING ON THE STORY? The best part about working on this story was the people. I loved working with the HarperCollins team and the illustrator Jaclyn Sinquett. They all worked so hard to make this book what it is now. What was really fun was seeing the illustrations progress over time. They went from sketches to black and white art to full color with every little detail. I just love how they bring the story to life. WHAT DO YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GROW UP? When I grow up, I want to be the president of the United States. I know that has nothing to do with letter writing, but that is what I want to be. WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE FOR PEOPLE WHO WANT TO ACHIEVE WHAT YOU HAVE? This all happened because I wrote a letter to my mailman, which is a simple act of gratitude. I would tell someone to just be kind and do kind things—not for acknowledgement, but to just put good out there and good will come to you. DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEAS FOR ANY OTHER BOOKS? No, I don’t have any ideas for a new book yet. I think I’ll just continue writing letters and see what happens. It worked well the first time. WHAT DO YOU HOPE FOR THIS YEAR? I hope in 2021 that we will continue recognizing people that do things to make our day-to-day easier, like mail carriers. This year has brought much deserved attention to them, and I hope it stays that way.
