Exploring the Black Hills on foot for the first time with my brothers when we were kids.

Summertime on the bike trails. For me, nothing beats the scenery and the sense of accomplishment after completing a full circle ride around the city.

“Arts South Dakota is a service organization, and its mission is to advance the arts for South Dakota and our visitors by advocating, educating, and connecting,” Jim Speirs executive director of Arts South Dakota told 605.

Promoting and supporting the arts throughout the state has been at the forefront of Arts South Dakota’s mission to aid in professional development, advocacy, lobbying, and promotional efforts.

“It’s what we like to call connecting people to the arts,” shared Speirs. “We let the people of South Dakota know about the dynamic and robust arts community we have in the state.”

One notable initiative that has contributed significantly to this mission is the Arts & Economic Prosperity Study 6 [AEP6].

This study, led nationally by Americans for the Arts, and locally by Arts South Dakota has played a crucial role in sharing the economic impact data on the non-profit arts in South Dakota.

“It studies the number of employees, expenditures, tax revenue, and local tax revenue generated,” said Speirs.

Throughout the fiscal year 2022, the nonprofit arts and culture sector generated $362,987,163 in economic activity throughout South Dakota.

“The other area of research was conducted through audience surveys,” Speirs stated.

“For patrons attending arts events in their communities, volunteers would survey how far they traveled and what expenses aside from ticket prices were incurred.”

From that data, Arts South Dakota was able to determine the state-wide average attendee dollar amount spent per arts event, which was $35.79 a person.

The next step was to identify how out of town visitors influence the amount they spend attending arts events. For non-locals, the average attendee dollar

amount spent was $74.14.

Not only was the study able to conclude the average spent at the events, but it also recorded total attendance.

Speirs shares the volunteers identified the number of visitors who traveled from another county or up to 100 miles away.

“This study gives you a clear picture of the significance of tourism as it relates to art experiences and the significance of people traveling to experience arts in your community,” he added.

In addition to the statewide study, AEP6 focused on five city arts councils throughout South Dakota: Aberdeen, Brookings, Rapid City, Sioux Falls, and Yankton. Throughout those five arts councils, the study extrapolated total expenditures and total employment.

“For Sioux Falls specifically, we saw our numbers increase within job employment here; the arts employ 2,156 people,” said Kellen Boice, executive director of the Sioux Falls Arts Council.

In Sioux Falls the study found that the arts and culture nonprofits make an annual economic impact of $126,108,085.

As for Rapid City, Jacqui Dietrich, executive director of the Rapid City Arts Council shares that their sector supports 3,296 jobs and makes an annual economic impact of $204,105,202.

“The future of our communities depends on arts and culture as an economic driver, as a creative community supports our local employers in professional recruitment, attracts visitors, and encourages local spending,” said Dietrich.

With South Dakota hosting a strong, close-knit arts community, art is gaining more attention as a driving force of tourism.

“We’ve known it since the 1930s. Tourism started in South Dakota from a large sculpture in the Black Hills,” shared Speirs. “It’s been a foundational element of tourism since day one, but now we’re starting to see a greater awareness and appreciation for the role the arts play in attracting visitors.”

The communities throughout the state have individual nonprofit art organizations and events that drive visitors to experience artistic and cultural opportunities time and time again.

“Within Rapid City, at least 90 art organizations are involved in those presentations,” said Dietrich.

Events such as the Black Hills Pow Wow draw audiences from around the country, while the semi-professional symphony employs 90 musicians.

Local businesses like Racing Magpie, The Journey Museum & Learning Center, and the Suzie Cappa Art Center serve as cultural and artistic amenities, as live music performed by local talent is a popular source of entertainment.

“The Dahl Arts Center is rooted in our culture of resilience and is a premier venue for regional artists, with dozens of exhibitions and performances catering to locals and visitors year-round,” said Dietrich.

In Sioux Falls, the Levitt at the Falls aims to build connections through music by gathering the diverse community and fostering social interactions among people of all ages and backgrounds. The Washington Pavilion serves to deliver memorable experiences that entertain, educate, and enrich through live performances, art galleries, hands-on science exhibits, and creative educational opportunities.

“The Arc of Dreams was an initiative from the Sculpture Walk Sioux Falls,” shared Boice. “It’s for everyone and it’s a unique piece of art that is becoming a staple in our community.”

The state of South Dakota has always valued cultural attractions and creative enterprises to drive economic growth.

AEP6 analyzes the impact of the arts non-profit industry on the state's economy and illustrates its importance to citizens.

“Art is so personal and is truly what makes our communities the way they are,” expressed Speirs. “It’s the arts that create character, that’s what defines the uniqueness of our communities. The impact is beyond words.”

The audience survey revealed the overwhelming appreciation of arts and cultural opportunities in South Dakota.

It was identified that 91% of respondents feel pride in their community or neighborhood's arts offerings, while 88% would feel a sense of loss if cultural opportunities were not available.

In addition, 87% of respondents said arts attendance contributes to the preservation of creative activities and venues.

“Our goal at Arts South Dakota is to connect and continue to have every South Dakotan aware of the role that art plays in their lives and communities,” said Speirs.

Situated at 605 East 8th Street in downtown Sioux Falls is a building that is more than meets the eye.

Monick Yards, a sweeping 12,000-square-foot event venue, fills the space of the former pipe supply company, Monick Pipe.

The venue is a partnership between the owners of Carpenter Bar, Highball Bar, The Treasury at Hotel on Phillips, and the owners of sister event venues, Convolo and Casetta.

“Partners Anne and Dustin Haber came across this building, and Dustin saw the potential for it to become an event space,” said Amy Boes, venue director.

“The building was going to be torn down with the plan of building something new, but it just didn’t work out,” Anne continued.

For the partnered owners, the space wasn’t the only aspect they loved about the building.

“It wasn’t only the space, but the location of the building establishing the opportunity to introduce an event venue in downtown Sioux Falls,” shared beverage director Brian White.

A full renovation of the interior and exterior of the building was underway when Boes and Angela Merritt were introduced to the project.

“The aesthetic at Amy and Angela’s other businesses was something that fit with our vision,” said White.

“It was a great fit when these two came in on the facility side,” added Anne.

“They had prior relationships with existing event owners, and that was a big thing for us.”

Merritt continued, “We knew of the great job they do with their bars aesthetically and it all seemed to line up.”

The ascended ceilings are adorned with original wood features and expansive frosted windows, which provide a private, airy, and industrial space.

The raw aesthetic is softened by thoughtful touches like curated furniture and minimalist décor. Warm lighting was added to create a welcoming and elegant ambiance.

The space itself is versatile, divided into two distinct areas: The Grand Hall and The Reception Hall.

The Grand Hall is designed to host wedding ceremonies with an open layout that’s bathed in natural light and polished concrete floors, while The Reception Hall is suited specifically for hosting wedding receptions, cocktail hours, and dancing.

The interconnecting halls create a seamless flow of events and also offer a quick change of scenery for hosts and guests.

Boes adds that for corporate events, The Grand Hall and Reception Hall can be kept separated to fit the host's needs and guest count.

For brides and grooms, designated suites the White Room and Green Room are the perfect spaces to prepare for the big day.

The bridal suite includes five getting-ready stations, a coffee machine, a mini fridge, and a lounging area, Merritt shares.

“There’s enough space for whole bridal parties because they’re there for the entire day, so it’s nice to have that landing spot for them,” she added.

With such simplicity, event hosts have a wide range of options for customizing their events.

“We wanted to create something that's interesting enough on its own and can be highlighted with décor,” said Merritt.

Additionally, The Grand and Reception Halls are equipped with built-in full bars operated by the mixologists of Carpenter Bar, Highball Bar, and The Treasury.

Monick Yards offers custom bar offerings and cocktail packages that are curated by a team of cocktail enthusiasts.

“We focus on providing prompt service, quality service, and quality cocktails and beverages at our three locations, and we want to make sure we deliver that at Monick as well,” explained beverage director Michael Mohr.

With White and Mohr’s 14 years of combined experience, the pair is ready to assemble a special cocktail menu, a champagne tower, custom cocktail selections, and more for any size event.

“We make sure that we’re offering things that are feasible for the masses, but also ensuring that we can provide a fun and unique cocktail experience for all of our guests that come through,” said Mohr.

“On top of that we can still offer the basics,” added White. “We’re not above bringing in a keg of Coors Light to fit everyone's needs; we can tailor to anything the customer wants.”

Gone are the days of thinking outside the box. In Box Elder, the action is happening inside it.

The Box Elder Events Center, or “The Box,” is the Midwest’s newest state-of-the-art facility serving as the backdrop for events of all shapes and sizes on the outskirts of Rapid City and Box Elder.

“We want to provide a world-class event venue for whatever event you want to host,” said general manager Adam Patton.

“We’re essentially an empty box,” he continued.

The Box boasts over 60,000 square feet of versatile space, catering to everything from intimate gatherings to large athletic tournaments.

The building is complemented with sleek, modern architecture with escalated ceilings and flexible spaces. The Box features not one, but two main event areas: the Ellsworth Salon and the Lancer Ballroom.

“The Ellsworth is our largest space, it’s big enough for three full-size basketball courts or four full volleyball courts,” explained Patton.

The 22,000-square-foot ballroom is multifaceted, ready to accommodate large-scale conferences, trade shows, or galas for up to over 3,000 people.

Patton shares that The Box is capable of accommodating the space to fit the event's aesthetic.

“We can carpet it or put our tarps down to turn it into a convention space or a trade show,” shared Patton. “When the carpet is down, it looks elegant.”

The Lancer sits as the second-largest area in The Box, equipped to host conference speakers, receptions, and luncheons.

“The Lancer Ballroom can seat up to 220 people and can be used for whatever the client is thinking,” Patton said. “It’s a very versatile space.”

The Ellsworth and Lancer can be divided into different floor plans to accommodate the number and size of upcoming events.

It doesn’t stop there, as break-out rooms and meeting areas are available in the Raider Rooms and Spirit Room for low-scale events such as birthday parties, before-game team huddles, and intimate receptions.

Since hosting its first event in June of 2023, The Box is looking forward to creating and hosting new events for the community to attend.

“We hosted CultureCon in September that was put on by a group from Sioux Falls,” stated Patton. “CultureCon has become a big deal and has grown to be quite popular and hadn’t been done in Rapid City before. We had the opportunity to host the first CultureCon on this side of the state, and it was very well received.”

Patton shares that his hope for The Box is to see it be used more than it’s capable of.

“We want to build and create events that are unlike anything else and ultimately have a world-class feel to them,” he said.

The entrepreneur was already well seasoned with franchises when he became involved in Crisp & Green, as he also owns the local Potbelly Sandwich Shop just two doors down by the Western Mall. The atmosphere of the actual space aligns with the “crisp and green idea” with modern finishes, an on-brand white and green color palette, large windows, and clean lines. Natural light pours into the restaurant with a glass garage door, which they utilize during the warmer months.

“In the summer we open the garage door to reveal the patio with café lights, and that is open all season and brings the outdoor bright space into our store,” said Goldammer.

Crisp & Green is also proud of the clean cooking line, which patrons approach near the entrance.

Goldammer says their recipes are chef-inspired, and each team member is there to answer any questions and give recommendations.

“It’s really a one-to-one straight conversation with the person who is creating your bowl and you can take care of everything right down to the dressing,” he described. “It is really a tailored experience.”

While customers can build their own salads or grain bowls, Goldammer recommends trusting the experts and starting with a restaurant mainstay and customizing it from there.

Grain bowls and salads are their best sellers, including the popular Fiesta Bowl. The Fiesta Bowl consists of brown rice, roasted chicken, avocado, napa cabbage, jalapeño, black beans, fajita peppers and onions, queso fresco, pepitas, roasted tomatillo salsa, lime squeeze, and jalapeño-lime vinaigrette.

“It’s awesome because they are free, so it’s a great way to connect with the community because who doesn’t want a free fitness class,” Goldammer continued, “and then it also gives people that have never had us a chance to come into our store to come in, see the space, and grab a healthy drink or bite when they’re done.”

And even though it’s healthy, Goldammer says the constant feedback is that everything at Crisp & Green is “craveable.”

605 STOPS BY When Jacob and Kelly Bunde opened Outpost 1875 in Sioux Falls, the business focused solely on designing and manufacturing accessory dwelling units “for the individual in search of living a better life.”

Throughout their visits and discovery calls with clients, the Bundes gathered the thought of these prefabricated, modern tiny homes becoming Airbnbs.

“Our love for unique vacation rentals and wanting to offer people the opportunity to be inside and enjoy an Outpost led us to dream up Outpost Adventures,” shared Kelly.

Outpost Adventures provides an immersive vacation escape for guests seeking to be wrapped in nature’s embrace.

The Bunde’s five-acre plot of land in Custer offers more than an average camping experience.

It’s glamping at its finest, where luxury meets adventure and comfort dances with the wilderness.

Jacob, a licensed AIA architect, personally designs the Outposts. The design of the units incorporates clean, industrial materials, while featuring a minimalist style.

“I designed the Outposts with full glass windows so guests can lay in a luxurious bed, snuggled next to a fireplace, and watch the deer at the automated feeders,” explained Jacob.

All three rentals blend seamlessly into the wooded landscape, offering a peaceful sanctuary and modern glamping experience.

The Blue Jay Outpost was inspired by the clear blue skies of South Dakota, while the Grey Wolf Outpost was inspired by the confident and alluring canine.

The Buffalo Canvas tent was named after the animal’s resourcefulness and pursuit of success, said Kelly.

Startup Sioux Falls Along the streets of downtown Sioux Falls, a historic building has been transformed into a place to nurture new ideas.

Last year Startup Sioux Falls moved into the downtown community with the intent of supporting entrepreneurs and founders, igniting innovation, and bolstering economic development in South Dakota’s largest city.

Though Startup has been around for 21 years, the nonprofit has shifted names and identities as it has grown. Back in 2002, the organization opened under the name South Dakota Technology and Business Center, focusing on tech and business incubation.

In 2016 it was rebranded to the Zeal Center for Entrepreneurship, and in 2021 the organization made the shift from Zeal to Startup Sioux Falls.

As the isolating side effects of the pandemic marched on, creating community became nearly impossible. Startup’s 45,000-squarefoot facility on the northwest side of town was spacious, but incongruent with the organization’s needs and goals.

To foster connectivity, a location change was inevitable.

“All signs pointed to downtown,” said president Brienne Maner.

Maner joined the team in 2019 after working at Downtown Sioux Falls, Inc. and other community and non-profit organizations for 15 years.

As the team scouted for a new location downtown, they began to consider the cityowned Parks and Recreation building with encouragement from Mayor Paul TenHaken.

Built in 1894 as a freight depot and office of the general agent for the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul & Pacific Railroad, the building had been sitting vacant for over five years.

“When the Mayor first suggested a tour of the facility, I was in disbelief that our operation could downsize to 5,500 square feet. The pandemic’s effects on remote work helped us realize it was exactly what we needed to serve today's entrepreneurs," said Maner.

The Startup team had their Wall Breaking Ceremony in May 2022 followed by the financial support of dozens of local businesses to begin renovations. The doors opened to the public in February of 2023.

Maner says the building, affectionately called “The Depot,” is a testament to entrepreneurship.

“I look at the quartzite walls and think about the determination, care, and the tenacity that it took to build a facility that’s still standing strong,” she said.

“Our move would not have been possible without the support of our greater business community such as MarketBeat, Lloyd Companies, POET, and SDN Communications, as well as our dedicated board and staff.”

With increased visibility downtown came an influx of folks drawn to the building, the organization, and its many services.

“We serve three different markets,” said community coordinator Amos Buelow. “Entrepreneurs and founders who want to grow a business and network, remote workers who want a workspace with community, and business organizations that need conference rooms or an event space.”

Startup offers different assets for each of the groups it serves. For remote workers, the facility provides a coworking space that increases focus and allows for connectivity with other entrepreneurs.

“I love the space,” said member Josh Lapin. “The staff is awesome, sometimes there’s free food, and it’s only $106 a month. I swear they are losing money on me,” he said.

Member Tim Summerer agreed, “It’s great to have the community and have a space I am proud to bring clients to, and it's fun to be in a cool part of town and a cool building.”

“Monument Health is committed to the future of medicine with medical training partnerships, a medical residency program, and more than 130 active research studies,” said Steven Maser, M.D. vice president of medical affairs.

The history of this health care system traces back to 1878 when the Sisters of the Holy Cross opened a hospital in the gold rush mining camp of Deadwood, while other communities constructed hospitals of their own.

In 1979, Rapid City’s two hospitals, St. John’s McNamara Hospital and Bennett-Clarkson Memorial Hospital merged into the Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Monument Health is now composed of five hospitals in addition to over 40 medical clinics and specialty centers throughout Belle Fourche, Buffalo, Custer, Deadwood, Hill City, Hot Springs, Lead, Spearfish, Sturgis, and Wall.

“I enjoy talking to patients, learning where they’re from, where they live, and what they do for work and for fun,” shared Maser. “It helps me understand them as a person so that I can better care for them.”

Medical Expert I’ve been involved in Medical Leadership for most of my career. In my current role, I work with all services and specialties in the hospital.

While my primary responsibility is Rapid City Hospital, I also interact with the other four Monument Health hospitals.

Serene Sites I love to hike and get outside. I’ve section-hiked the entire Centennial Trail and enjoyed many other trails throughout the Hills. My journey to different trails also takes me along roads and past scenery that I wouldn't have seen otherwise.

Our hills are very accessible, beautiful, and unique from the first steps you take.

I’m a passionate professional and college football fan. I’m originally from Pennsylvania, and my teams are the Philadelphia Eagles and Penn State Nittany Lions.

I’ve been told that I smile a lot. One of my prior OR nurses would call me “smiley."

Traveling is a passion of mine. In my quest for the 50 states, I still need Oklahoma, which I plan to visit in April, and Alaska.

I’m frequently whistling. Half of the time, I don’t even know what I’m whistling until someone mentions it or I stop to think about it.

I love our large mixed family–my partner Bonnie, my kids, Aly, Jeff, and his wife, Julia. Bonnie’s kids–Will, Niki, Liz, Chris, Joe, and his wife, Emma.

Backpacking Pals I live very close to Skyline Drive, so the Skyline Wilderness Trail is in my backyard. I also have friends who hike Hanson-Larsen Memorial Park at 5 a.m. about once a week.

Maser’s Hiking Motto My hiking motto is, “There’s no such thing as bad weather, just improper clothing!” My remedy is the gear at Roam’n Around in Rapid City and Granite Sports in Hill City.

Sunday Traditions My partner, Bonnie, and I eat at HJEM A.M. most Sunday mornings. Erik and Cami Belland, the owners, are wonderful hosts, and the food is fabulous. I frequently order The Bob (pancakes with lingonberries and lemon creme) and Bonnie orders the Morning Walleye.

Stops & Shops After our breakfast in Custer, we frequently stop in Hill City on the way home. Jewel of the West has great clothing and we also enjoy visiting our friends at the Beef Jerky Experience.

Great Company Bonnie and I love the great company and views at the Juniper at Vertex Sky Bar at the Hotel Alex Johnson. It’s a great place to take out our out-of-town visitors. For dessert, we head across the street to Mary’s Mountain Cookies.

Early Bird Gets The Worm I’m a morning person, up at 4:20 a.m. and ready for bed by about 8:30 p.m. If I’m not hiking in the morning, I’m at the Sports Performance Institute powered by Exos at the Monument Health Orthopedic & Specialty Hospital for a 5 a.m. exercise class.

Learning Curve My favorite experience I had in Lead was Neutrino Days.

I enjoyed learning about the work going on at the Sanford Underground Research Facility.

Beating the Heat In the summer, I enjoy going to the lakes in Custer State Park, particularly Legion Lake. There’s a small beach, a beautiful backdrop, and a snack bar!

When not working, what can we find you doing?

I can often be found at home keeping busy with animals, plants, or my kids’ imagination. My family has an acreage, and I thoroughly enjoy gardening and looking after our chickens, rescue dog, and two cats. If I’m not home, I’m most likely enjoying a local restaurant or volunteering with Sioux Empire Pit Rescue.

What are your favorite spots to visit in & around Sioux Falls? My family is especially partial to the great local food and

drink spots like Queen City Bakery, Fernson Brewing Company, Breadico Sourdough Bread Company, Bagel Boy, and Golden Bowl Restaurant. Of course my kids love the local fun spots like Thunder Road Sioux Falls, Rainbow Comics, Cards, & Collectibles, and Arrowhead Park.

What's something you’d like readers to know about yourself? I’m an open book, and there’s nothing I love more than a challenge and learning something new.
