“What I get a lot of now is commission stuff of characters, or I’ve had people ask me to draw their family.”
He says he enjoys drawing people in his unique art style and working with clients on making their different ideas come to life. Much of his inspiration comes from Disney films like Peter Pan and The Little Mermaid and “Saturday morning cartoons” from the 1980s.
In this series, there are characters from Disney, Marvel, Harry Potter, 1980s cartoons, Star Wars, Broadway musicals, and more.
“A lot of this art is based on my series called At the Playground ,” said Hunt. “It’s showing imagination in what kids think they look like at the playground. It’s not actually a mini Captain America or whoever. They are actually kids showing what they look like in their imagination.”

“The first four shots that I was assigned were the first four scenes in the film,” said Hunt about the last time he saw the sequences.
“My animation and artwork was seen all over the world. The first time I saw my animation on the show was in the Netherlands,” he said.

“It’s rare it happens that late in the production,” explained Hunt. “I was worried I wouldn’t have anything in the film. The rest of it did play and my name was in the credits.”
To his dismay when he first saw it in theaters, he says those scenes had been cut due to story timing. Luckily, his first assignments did appear in the outtakes on the DVD of the film.
Sid the Science Kid on PBS is another one of his biggest projects.
When he first started working with Overseas Radio in Taiwan, the show he was working on aired as an aid for learning English.
Hunt has worked on smaller projects like children's books and client commissions, as well as films like The Nut Job 2: Nutty By Nature. He says this film was his first time animating animals on four legs.

In South Dakota, he’s worked with the Brandon Valley School District and South Dakota State University (SDSU). The Brandon Valley School District asked Hunt to redesign their lynx mascots.
“Most people don’t know there’s two of them. Then I found out from some people that there’s actually Leo and Leah. It was so they could have a female mascot for the girls team,” said Hunt. SDSU goes through Hunt for their new mascot revamp. Now Hunt redesigns the Jackrabbit for different events and apparel.

“The primary goals of the rebrand were to define our brand and logo and to embrace and define the city of Watertown to inspire visitors with what our community has to offersuch as art, culture, food, drink, and the outdoors,” said Uthe.
“We felt that we needed a more distinguished logo for Watertown to reflect our goals and objectives of the organization,” said Uthe. “We felt it was time.”
Uthe says that working with Simpleview, a company dedicated to assisting destination marketing companies, Visit Watertown developed a logo and branding that would last the test of time.

“Some of the houses I’ve heard are going to be Airbnbs and eventually there will be a restaurant to make the lake more accessible to those that don’t live on it,” said Uthe.
During the warmer months of the year, Uthe says Lake Kampeska is a great place for visitors to experience life on the water and to participate in watersports like kneeboarding and water skiing.

Aerial arts involve working with long, hanging silks, climbing high, and maneuvering into complex twists and poses that Mathieu says often make viewers gasp in anticipation. They do this all while ensuring their safety.
When Katie Herrmann and Kayla Mathieu started Cirka Performance Arts in 2021, they hoped to bring exciting and unique entertainment to events, festivals, and more.
“It’s really a memorable experience, and it’s something where it’s giving that Vegas shock factor to your events or giving something that people are truly going to remember,” said Herrmann.
The pair first became interested in aerial arts about five years ago. Herrmann had been a gymnast all her life, and Mathieu had no experience. They say they each attended classes and eventually felt confident enough to begin performing.

When booking different performers, Herrmann says Cirka will work with clients to bundle packages for a better deal. Prices vary depending on the desired performers, the timeline, and the space.
Another piece of aerial equipment is the lyra hoop, which is either suspended from an above rig or is freestanding on top of a pole (lollipop lyra).
“We started doing performances with our gym, but performing wasn’t really where they wanted to go with their program,” said Herrmann. “We decided we wanted to get out into the community a little more. That’s how we came up with Cirka and started doing performances.”

“We’re focusing on performances now, but this is accessible to anyone. I think that people look at this as, ‘Wow, this is amazing.’
“We can go indoors or outdoors. Outdoors we have our own rigs that we can put up and take down. It takes about 15 minutes. From our rig, we’ve got aerial silks and our lyra,” said HerrmannMathieu.added, “That goes up to 20 feet, and we’re insured up to 30. When there are places like The District and the Sioux Falls Convention Center [with support rafters], we can go up higher.”

First, they showed how to get safely into the lyra hoop before walking through different poses like Man on the Moon, Lady on , and more. Then they climbed up to switch the lyra for aerial silks before teaching some basic moves to make me more comfortable. After I failed to go upside down the first way, they tied a knot into the silks and showed a simpler way.

At one of their recent performances, Herrmann and Mathieu were happy to offer me and a few others a chance at feeling the confidence of aerial arts.
Though I didn’t think my mild fear of heights would let me, I completed the drop.
"There are so many people in our community that have such amazing talents, but they don’t know who to talk to to get out there to perform. Cirka is also just trying to get these people together and have a community for us as well.”
As Cirka grows, they are planning to offer an aerial arts learning experience online through video courses in the near future.
The last move was an Angel Drop, and it gave a burst of adrenaline and terrified me at the same time. After pulling myself up into a modified seat on the silks, I had to lean forward, and trust my weight and the silks. The Angel Drop is a basic spin that looks similar to a front flip, taking the performer 360° and back to the ground to land on their feet.

“What’s gotten us this far is passion for it and the love of the sport, knowing that this is something that we want to continue sharing with people. To grow that in our community is fantastic,” said Herrmann.
“We think it’s a great workout experience for people of all ages. It’s low impact even though you’re in the air and doing scary things. It can help you become so much more confident and overcome a lot of fears,” said Herrmann. It was an experience unlike anything I’ve ever done before, and my sore body in the following days reminded me that it was definitely a full-body workout.

Green says the business didn’t start with the end goal of a restaurant; it began with a desire to meal prep. But after operating out of the Good Roots Farm & Gardens kitchen and selling her meals at Pomegranate Market in Sioux Falls, Brookings Farmers’ Market, and other locations, her dream changed.
“The goal had evolved from wanting to meal prep to wanting to create a vegan fast food chain. It went from farmers’ markets and stocking shelves to a food truck,” said Green. “This year I signed up for the farmers’ market in Sioux Falls with the anticipation of a storefront opening at some point. It all fell into place faster than I thought it would.”

When Albert and Kayla Huizing first listed the basement of their Sioux Falls home on Airbnb, they fell in love with the hospitality of running it.
“When we just started, we advertised our places on Airbnb, but we wanted our own website where people can book directly with us,” said Kayla.
While Kayla says she loves managing other people’s properties, she wanted to have one of her own.

SoDak Stays started in 2021 by managing fun local Airbnbs for the owners who either lived far away or wanted to delegate the day-to-day details to someone else. Most of these properties are in Sioux Falls.
Earlier this year, the Huizings purchased a home in Sioux Falls to run a short-term rental. Now they run around 15 properties, but that number is changing and growing.
“I’ve always loved inviting people in,” said Kayla. “When I have friends over, I almost love getting ready to have friends over as much as having them over.”
Kayla showed the 605 team around two of her properties including The Ziggy, which she owns.

The mid-century modern space has an eclectic mix of décor from thrifting finds, to new buys, and pieces Kayla says she designed herself.

Throughout The Ziggy, Kayla wanted to feature bright wallpaper to enhance each stay with color just like at the hotel.
“It was the coolest,” explained Kayla. “They had fun wallpaper. Instead of a regular check-in desk, it was a popsicle stand. They had a record player in the room. I just want to make quirky things [like that] that people remember.”

There, they stayed at a boutique hotel called Rise Uptown Hotel. The staff there personalized their experience with non-alcoholic beverages for the occasion, and Kayla says she was captivated by the designs.
She adds that the design of The Ziggy was inspired by her and her husband’s babymoon trip to Phoenix, AZ.

When SoDak Stays joined the Sioux Falls Chamber of Commerce , the ribbon cutting ceremony took place at The Tree House property. This property sleeps 12 across four bedrooms and one and a half bathrooms. Kayla says this is ideal for families with children with the playset in the backyard, hammocks, a doodle room for drawing on walls, and a bunking room for sleepovers.

“When people travel, they want to experience something they don’t get to experience at home,” said Kayla. One of the features of this home is the two-story solarium that allows guests to enjoy natural light throughout the day and fall asleep beneath the night sky. This room also features a kids’ play area and hang out space with a projector. There’s even a hammock to relax in.

Over the last half century, the company has been designing and constructing buildings for commercial use, storage, farming, hobbies, and more.
A few years ago, when Gronewold came onto the team, he says he realized there was another rising market Reaves was missing out on: barndominiums. These wood-frame structures are known for their ability to be homes and workshops all in one building.
“ Lloyd Reaves, the original owner, had a vision one day about one of the strongest buildings out there and it grew from there,” said regional sales manager Cory Gronewold

“We didn’t think it would take off because nobody could finance them,” explained Gronewold. “I got into banking and found the banks to do it. I tried to get people to realize what the barndominiums are in comparison to a regular house.” He adds that barndominiums are every bit as customizable as a traditional new home with the added benefit of a large shop attached directly to it. “It fits all people, but it’s geared toward the people who like to be out in the shop and do hobbies out there,” said Gronewold. One of the most recognizable features of a barndominium is the steel siding as opposed to traditional. “The benefit is less maintenance on the steel versus the traditional siding,” explained Gronewold. “A lot of people like the look of it. You can get different profiles in steel.”

He adds that there aren’t any solid rules when it comes to building a custom barndominium with Reaves.

Gronewold decided to live in a barndominium himself. His favorite parts of the build include the high ceilings in the living areas and his man Withcave.18-foot ceilings, his shop has a lofted man cave, space to work on hobby projects, and a separate garage for the cars he and his girlfriend drive on a daily basis.
“You try to keep the shop about one and a half the size of the house, so it doesn’t look too off beat,” said Gronewold.

“You build them at whatever size you want,” explained Gronewold. “There’s no set limit on it by any means. I’ve done them at 1,300 square feet and all the way up to 3,500 square feet on the main floor.”
While his own property has a two-story build with four bedrooms and bathrooms, Gronewold’s neighbors worked with him to construct a single story structure that has two bedrooms and bathrooms in the house.
“The minimum for a nice barndominium is $400,000. The square footage of a barndominium is less than a traditional house, but you’re getting more square footage in the shop.”
For a home and a large shop, Gronewold says a barndominium is an affordable option.

I was working for a different firm in Omaha and wasn’t happy with the type of work I was doing. I knew the type of projects Schemmer worked on. So I looked up their number in the phone book—yes, an actual phone book because it was 1999—and made the call to see if they were hiring. I met with their civil engineering manager, and the rest is history. My wife and I enjoy checking out new restaurants in town. We lived away for 23 years, so a lot has changed in that time. We enjoy spending time outdoors, so exploring new trails in the area has been fun. I have always enjoyed hunting and fishing but didn’t do as much of it as I would have liked when I moved away. South Dakota has so much to offer for these activities, so I’m really looking forward to spending more time doing that.

Pedal on the Path Change
My wife and I are originally from South Dakota and recently moved back after 23 years living in Omaha. It has been enjoyable being close to family and reconnecting with past acquaintances. Seeing the change in Sioux Falls that happened over that time and changes that are currently happening has been exciting. My favorite outdoor activities would include hunting, fishing, and introducing new hunters to the outdoors. I have had a small migration in my outdoor life recently where I am enjoying and gaining a better appreciation for watching and being part of other people’s success in their outdoor endeavors.

I was married in June of 2021, so much of my time is spent with my beautiful bride growing our relationship and laying the groundwork we see fit to have a successful marriage. Outside of that, I enjoy reading, exploring inside the state and out, working with my dogs, and volunteering to local groups I am part of.
