Today, one hundred fifty years later, First Dakota is still proud to be our state’s first bank. Our customers have shaped South Dakota into the remarkable place we call home. That’s why our 150th anniversary is a tribute to this great state and the people who make it so.

For the Road Ahead

We Still Love It Here

TIM WEIDENBACH Tim is the director of Higher Power Sports, a non-profit that informs high school and college students about the importance of road safety and the dangers of distracted driving. Thanks for all you do, Tim! TRAVIS SCHAEFFER Travis lost his wife, Jessica, to cancer in April 2021, leaving him to father their four children, ages 2–11. Travis’ reputation as a generous, faithful man made him an obvious candidate for our pickup giveaways. Thanks for all you do, Travis! Travis Schaeffer and family with his new Ford F-150. In 2022, we partnered with the South Dakota Community Foundation to establish our Stronger Communities Fund, which awards grant donations to South Dakota communities and organizations. Our goal is simple — meet real needs, serve real people, and strengthen our state. Visit www.firstdakota.com/150 to learn how this fund could support your SD community.

When First Dakota National Bank opened its doors for business along the Missouri River in 1872, South Dakota wasn’t even “a thing,” as we like to say. Well, it wasn’t a true state yet, but it was a land of opportunity for many families, farmers, and other settlers in the region.

“I love drawing kids books, but I love animating films and seeing them up on the screen,” said Hunt. CREATIONS Behl, (

After spending his college years at the University of Nebraska and the Art Institutes International Minnesota, he worked for a few animation and production companies including The Jim Henson Company, Overseas Radio & Television Inc., and Duncan Studios. Now he sells his art under DakotaKid Creations Studio & Shoppe from his Brandon home, and he says he hopes to have the best of both worlds by working on illustrating books and commissions as well as working on larger film productions.

“What I get a lot of now is commission stuff of characters, or I’ve had people ask me to draw their family.”

He says he enjoys drawing people in his unique art style and working with clients on making their different ideas come to life. Much of his inspiration comes from Disney films like Peter Pan and The Little Mermaid and “Saturday morning cartoons” from the 1980s.

In this series, there are characters from Disney, Marvel, Harry Potter, 1980s cartoons, Star Wars, Broadway musicals, and more.

“A lot of this art is based on my series called At the Playground ,” said Hunt. “It’s showing imagination in what kids think they look like at the playground. It’s not actually a mini Captain America or whoever. They are actually kids showing what they look like in their imagination.”

20 | 605MAGAZINE.COM “ ANIMATION IS THE ONLY THING I’VE WANTED TO DO. FROM ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, THAT’S WHAT I’VE WANTED TO DO. I DIDN’T ALWAYS KNOW WHAT IT WOULD BE, BUT I KNEW I WANTED TO DO IT. ” LAMONT HUNT

“The first four shots that I was assigned were the first four scenes in the film,” said Hunt about the last time he saw the sequences.

After over 20 years with the same logo and branding, Visit Watertown decided it was time to try something new.

Visit Watertown A FRESH LOOK

“After many years of the same look, the Watertown Convention & Visitors Bureau decided it was time to use appropriate messaging to promote our organization and Watertown as a destination,” said Anjelica Uthe, the executive director.

written by Dawn Geertsema & photos by Alana Snyder

The former branding clung tightly to the slogan of “South Dakota’s Rising Star.” Moving away from that, the new logo depicts a sun rising or setting over water in a simplistic art style.

THE DESIGN ISSUE september 2022 DESIGNART+ Redlin Art Center

“The primary goals of the rebrand were to define our brand and logo and to embrace and define the city of Watertown to inspire visitors with what our community has to offersuch as art, culture, food, drink, and the outdoors,” said Uthe.

“We felt that we needed a more distinguished logo for Watertown to reflect our goals and objectives of the organization,” said Uthe. “We felt it was time.”

Uthe says that working with Simpleview, a company dedicated to assisting destination marketing companies, Visit Watertown developed a logo and branding that would last the test of time.

The website also received a refresh through Sioux Falls agency Lawrence & Schiller to better complement the new branding. The organization aims to highlight what makes Watertown a destination.

“Visit Watertown markets, promotes, and attracts visitors to Watertown. We promote people traveling for leisure, business, and sporting events,” said Uthe.

Other attractions include Bramble Park Zoo, Derby Downs, Joy Ranch, and more. Throughout the year, Uthe says the town hosts many events.

Aerial arts involve working with long, hanging silks, climbing high, and maneuvering into complex twists and poses that Mathieu says often make viewers gasp in anticipation. They do this all while ensuring their safety.

When Katie Herrmann and Kayla Mathieu started Cirka Performance Arts in 2021, they hoped to bring exciting and unique entertainment to events, festivals, and more.

“It’s really a memorable experience, and it’s something where it’s giving that Vegas shock factor to your events or giving something that people are truly going to remember,” said Herrmann.

The pair first became interested in aerial arts about five years ago. Herrmann had been a gymnast all her life, and Mathieu had no experience. They say they each attended classes and eventually felt confident enough to begin performing.

THE DESIGN ISSUE september 2022

When booking different performers, Herrmann says Cirka will work with clients to bundle packages for a better deal. Prices vary depending on the desired performers, the timeline, and the space.

Another piece of aerial equipment is the lyra hoop, which is either suspended from an above rig or is freestanding on top of a pole (lollipop lyra).

“We started doing performances with our gym, but performing wasn’t really where they wanted to go with their program,” said Herrmann. “We decided we wanted to get out into the community a little more. That’s how we came up with Cirka and started doing performances.”

ENTERTAINMENTCULTURE+ 40 | 605MAGAZINE.COM

Since Cirka began, they have been part of many events including corporate events, festivals, parties, or one-off restaurant and business performances.

“We have three core aerial performers, a juggler, and a hoop/fire performer,” said Herrmann.

“We’re focusing on performances now, but this is accessible to anyone. I think that people look at this as, ‘Wow, this is amazing.’

“We can go indoors or outdoors. Outdoors we have our own rigs that we can put up and take down. It takes about 15 minutes. From our rig, we’ve got aerial silks and our lyra,” said HerrmannMathieu.added, “That goes up to 20 feet, and we’re insured up to 30. When there are places like The District and the Sioux Falls Convention Center [with support rafters], we can go up higher.”

Some of the booking options include Ambient Event Performance, Single Performance Acts, Circus Variety Shows, and Perform and Play Parties.

We also want to show that you can be the one doing this amazing thing. Both of us started this as adults,” said Herrmann. For a smaller event like birthdays, gender reveals, and more, book a Perform and Play Party. Once they are set up, the performers will go through a short routine, and then offer the chance for the event guests to learn some tricks on the equipment.

First, they showed how to get safely into the lyra hoop before walking through different poses like Man on the Moon, Lady on , and more. Then they climbed up to switch the lyra for aerial silks before teaching some basic moves to make me more comfortable. After I failed to go upside down the first way, they tied a knot into the silks and showed a simpler way.

At one of their recent performances, Herrmann and Mathieu were happy to offer me and a few others a chance at feeling the confidence of aerial arts.

Though I didn’t think my mild fear of heights would let me, I completed the drop.

"There are so many people in our community that have such amazing talents, but they don’t know who to talk to to get out there to perform. Cirka is also just trying to get these people together and have a community for us as well.”

As Cirka grows, they are planning to offer an aerial arts learning experience online through video courses in the near future.

The last move was an Angel Drop, and it gave a burst of adrenaline and terrified me at the same time. After pulling myself up into a modified seat on the silks, I had to lean forward, and trust my weight and the silks. The Angel Drop is a basic spin that looks similar to a front flip, taking the performer 360° and back to the ground to land on their feet.

“What’s gotten us this far is passion for it and the love of the sport, knowing that this is something that we want to continue sharing with people. To grow that in our community is fantastic,” said Herrmann.

“We think it’s a great workout experience for people of all ages. It’s low impact even though you’re in the air and doing scary things. It can help you become so much more confident and overcome a lot of fears,” said Herrmann. It was an experience unlike anything I’ve ever done before, and my sore body in the following days reminded me that it was definitely a full-body workout.

Over the last half century, the company has been designing and constructing buildings for commercial use, storage, farming, hobbies, and more.

A few years ago, when Gronewold came onto the team, he says he realized there was another rising market Reaves was missing out on: barndominiums. These wood-frame structures are known for their ability to be homes and workshops all in one building.

“ Lloyd Reaves, the original owner, had a vision one day about one of the strongest buildings out there and it grew from there,” said regional sales manager Cory Gronewold

“We didn’t think it would take off because nobody could finance them,” explained Gronewold. “I got into banking and found the banks to do it. I tried to get people to realize what the barndominiums are in comparison to a regular house.” He adds that barndominiums are every bit as customizable as a traditional new home with the added benefit of a large shop attached directly to it. “It fits all people, but it’s geared toward the people who like to be out in the shop and do hobbies out there,” said Gronewold. One of the most recognizable features of a barndominium is the steel siding as opposed to traditional. “The benefit is less maintenance on the steel versus the traditional siding,” explained Gronewold. “A lot of people like the look of it. You can get different profiles in steel.”

“You build them at whatever size you want,” explained Gronewold. “There’s no set limit on it by any means. I’ve done them at 1,300 square feet and all the way up to 3,500 square feet on the main floor.”

While his own property has a two-story build with four bedrooms and bathrooms, Gronewold’s neighbors worked with him to construct a single story structure that has two bedrooms and bathrooms in the house.

“The minimum for a nice barndominium is $400,000. The square footage of a barndominium is less than a traditional house, but you’re getting more square footage in the shop.”

For a home and a large shop, Gronewold says a barndominium is an affordable option.

Learn more about Buelow from her interior design background to her favorite gifting project.

“I started this company to be a place people could come to for truly memorable gifts,” said owner and chief gifting officer Kelsey Buelow Located in Sioux Falls, Buelow says she works to create custom gift boxes for all kinds of businesses and “Ioccasions.takecare of everything from sourcing products through small or local businesses, packaging them up professionally, handwriting all of the cards, and shipping or delivering them as needed,” said Buelow.

Fact 84 | 605MAGAZINE.COM

People might know me from… I was the interior designer at Paul Fick Custom Homes for five years and had the privilege of helping over 400 homeowners design their homes. For locals who want to avoid shipping fees, Buelow offers a pick-up option.

I started the company because... everyone needs to know they are loved and appreciated, but as humans, we often have a hard time communicating the love and appreciation to others, especially in the workplace. I strongly believe that when VIPs (clients, employees, co-workers, donors, etc.) are shown love and appreciation, whether it’s through a Wonderfully Made gift, a handwritten card, or a dinner date, it leaves a lasting impression on their hearts.

At the beginning of the year,... Midco approached me asking if I would create their Surprise and Delight gifts. They encourage their employees to submit a gift request anytime they’ve met with a customer and feel he or she could use a gift. I of course said yes to creating these. I love Midco’s heart behind their Surprise and Delight program.

The best part of my job is… no day is the same. I get to flex my creative muscle regularly, come up with new marketing ideas, learn about the psychology of gifting, photograph new gifts, go to networking events, and package up orders.

Currently, I’m partnered with Freedom Studios , Jo Creative Co. , and The Spice & Tea Exchange . Please send me an email if you or someone you know has products that you think would be great in a gift box!” KELSEY BUELOW

What I love about putting together gift boxes is… that it combines my design skills and arts and crafts skills. I get to shop for beautiful products, color coordinate box designs, and put beautiful gifts together every day. And it never leaves my mind that each gift will bring a big smile to its recipient’s face.

KELSEY BUELOW

“From the engraved wooden box and luxe ribbon, to the unique items and handwritten card inside, each gift tells the recipient that they are appreciated, cared for, and cherished.”

In January, I got an office space downtown… that has been a game changer for my work/life balance. I get to play and bond with my daughter in the mornings. Then when my husband is done with work, I bike to the office and work in the afternoons until supper time.

LIFESTYLE

My favorite place to go for inspiration is… my home. As a designer, I’m constantly seeing different types of design everywhere, and I think it’s all pretty. But I want to stay grounded in my personal style, and my home is 100% my style. Think light and airy French country with coordinated colors, throw pillows from Grandma’s house, some old fashioned accessories, and a comeon-in attitude. I always look to have this style reflected in my gifts.

THE DESIGN ISSUE september 2022

I’m in the beginning stages of… designing mini luxury gifts. With mini gifts, the entire experience will still be there with high-quality packaging and unique gift items, but it will be at a lower price point. I especially want to give start-up companies the option to be able to give an impactful gift to those who are helping grow their business. These gifts will also be perfect as bridal party gifts, favors, or quick pick-me-up gifts.

I was working for a different firm in Omaha and wasn’t happy with the type of work I was doing. I knew the type of projects Schemmer worked on. So I looked up their number in the phone book—yes, an actual phone book because it was 1999—and made the call to see if they were hiring. I met with their civil engineering manager, and the rest is history. My wife and I enjoy checking out new restaurants in town. We lived away for 23 years, so a lot has changed in that time. We enjoy spending time outdoors, so exploring new trails in the area has been fun. I have always enjoyed hunting and fishing but didn’t do as much of it as I would have liked when I moved away. South Dakota has so much to offer for these activities, so I’m really looking forward to spending more time doing that.

My favorite trip of all time was when I visited Iceland. I’m starting to accumulate more Scotch whisky than I probably should. I started working at Schemmer in 1999. My wife and I got engaged at Falls Park in 1998. Falls Park has changed a lot since then. My wife and I are South Dakota State University alumni, so our house bleeds blue and yellow. ----

Pedal on the Path Change

My wife and I are originally from South Dakota and recently moved back after 23 years living in Omaha. It has been enjoyable being close to family and reconnecting with past acquaintances. Seeing the change in Sioux Falls that happened over that time and changes that are currently happening has been exciting. We recently started using the bike trail, making the round trip to downtown from our home in southern Sioux Falls. It’s fun to stop downtown before making the trek back home. MORE INFORMATION,

My favorite outdoor activities would include hunting, fishing, and introducing new hunters to the outdoors. I have had a small migration in my outdoor life recently where I am enjoying and gaining a better appreciation for watching and being part of other people’s success in their outdoor endeavors.

102 | 605MAGAZINE.COM

I was married in June of 2021, so much of my time is spent with my beautiful bride growing our relationship and laying the groundwork we see fit to have a successful marriage. Outside of that, I enjoy reading, exploring inside the state and out, working with my dogs, and volunteering to local groups I am part of.

What are your favorite outdoor activities?

Most of my hunting activities revolve around the moment and the experience and just being outside with my dogs, friends, and wife.
