What a lot of readers don’t know is that we receive story leads months (and sometimes years) in advance. I had heard of The Market on the Plaza in Aberdeen since the summer of 2020, and I was so thrilled to finally get to see it in person a few weeks ago. The talented team is the epitome of innovation and adding to the culture in their town. From coffee to cocktails, to South Dakota merchandise and a podcast, this crew is making exciting strides.

Now that the story has been shot, written, and published, I only have one regret: not featuring it sooner. After spending the morning making our own bath salt soak mixtures, I went home and formally ended a two decade hiatus from taking baths. And to anyone who might have doubts about the effectiveness of a mineral-rich bath, I will gladly let my glowing complexion and lower blood pressure provide the proof.

Sidewalk Arts Festival September 11 DOWNTOWN | SIOUX FALLS | 9 A.M. With 240+ vendors showcasing fine art and artisan products, the Sidewalk Arts Festival in downtown Sioux Falls streets surrounding the Washington Pavilion has something for everyone. Buffalo Roundup + Arts Festival September 23-25 CUSTER STATE PARK | CUSTER | TIMES VARY

Watch as a cloud of dust follows about 1,300 bison pound through the prairie of Custer State Park at 9:30 a.m. on Friday. Cowboys and cowgirls will drive the herd to the corrals at the end of the trek. During and after the roundup, up to 150 vendors will be available for browsing the Buffalo Roundup Arts Festival. Fall Volksmarch September 26 CRAZY HORSE MEMORIAL | CRAZY HORSE | ALL DAY Trek through dirt and gravel trails up to the arm of the memorial. Once you’ve reached the path of Crazy Horse’s gaze carved on his nine-story face, turn around and head back down to complete the 10 miles of Fall Volksmarch. Colorful Creations owner Carly Pochop and owner of the former Dakota Territory Brewing Company, Brodie Mueller, became a power duo, creating various clothing lines under the name Six Zero Five. For a while, they operated without a storefront. “One of the founding principles that we are working with is that we were tired of not being proud of being from South Dakota,” explained Mueller. When the Aberdeen Development Corporation proposed they start a brick and mortar concept of their brand on the new plaza in 2020, the pair jumped at the opportunity and went above and beyond the original clothing concept with The Market on the Plaza. “They were looking for a retail space, so they approached us to come to the retail space,” said Mueller, adding that they opened their doors at the end of April 2021. “It evolved into clothing, plus coffee, plus food, plus a second story with a bar and extra seating as well.”

Coffee served at The Market on the Plaza is sourced from Gettysburg, the clothing is designed by South Dakotans, and even the beer upstairs is brought in from Midwest states. “It was just a chance to bring in all these different things that make this area and make this state great and showcase it all,” said Mueller. Clothing items vary from hats to sweatshirts, tees, and even apparel for children. And food items include light, café-style options like sandwiches, wraps, and paninis. Pochop also said that soup will also be offered soon. In the bar upstairs, there are also locally sourced charcuterie boards and S’mores Boards. “For us midwesterners, we also call them Midwest Grazing Boards for those that aren’t quite sure how to say charcuterie,” said Pochop with a laugh. The S’mores Boards come to the table with personal fire pits for roasting right in your seat.

The Market on the Plaza is meant to be a place for everyone and everything. “Especially after the year that we’ve had, it’s more important to have those places where we can connect and where we can feel together again. Our tagline is ‘Welcome Home,’” added Mueller. It’s all about bringing people together to bond and appreciate the community. “Something we talk about a lot is this idea of a third space in communities,” explained Mueller. “You have your first space which is your home, your second space which is your work, but then we need those third spaces for people to congregate.” At The Market on the Plaza, they want to be a foundation for local businesses to grow and flourish. “Our whole goal is to support everything local and to keep everything as close as possible to support those mom-andpop shops that can’t have a whole brick and mortar,” said Pochop. “Helping them, we can create this beautiful space together. It’s just a really inviting space that you just want to stay and work in.” Before they had the storefront, the business partners started a podcast called The Rural Revolution to get their ideas out in the air and support the community how they saw best.

Entrepreneurial Escapades Pochop’s Colorful Creations on Main Street has been open for six years. It’s a hands-on art studio offering various painting activities, wood art, and more art classes. After four years of running Dakota Territory Brewing Company, Mueller closed its doors. Now he’s working to convert an old music store to Engles Events, an event center next to Colorful Creations.

“Many individuals are doing great things, so we wanted a chance to tell their stories,” said Mueller. The Market continues to change as Pochop and Mueller are open to feedback and recommendations. “Our roles are more of the visionaries, but also making sure we’re listening to the feedback of the community and really fine tuning to give the community what they want and what they need,” said Pochop. Just outside of the building is the Malchow Plaza, a place where they host events like a Saturday morning farmers’ market and concerts with local artists. “People get the vibe we’re going for, they get the mission of what we’re trying to do, but the plaza brings it all together,” explained Mueller.

“Railyard Flats has this incredible warmth that so many new buildings lack,” said Pendar Properties partner Anne Haber. “The warmth comes from the historical location and the use of modern mass timber, which has never been done before in this state. There is a feeling of so much love.” Located across the street from downtown Sioux Falls’s 8th & Railroad Center, the newly constructed Railyard Flats brings an industrial urban flair to the area with apartments, offices, and a cocktail bar called Highball.

Trading Tracks
The building sits on what once was a railyard, evident in its name. There, the trains would swap from one set of tracks to another. In an effort to allow more space for downtown Sioux Falls to expand, the city partnered with the railroads to make a change, according to Haber. “That consisted of finding a new location for the switchyard, and in turn, freeing up many acres of developable land in downtown,” said Haber.

With the switchyard moved to a different location, construction began on Pendar Properties’s Railyard Flats, building where it once was. “There is still an operating railroad next door, but they are no longer switching,” said Haber.

“Before they could signal the conductor, they would utilize a pulley system with a big white or red ball on it. If that ball was up, that was called a highball, and the train could proceed through the platform without stopping. If it was down, they’d have to come to a stop.” -Anne Haber on the mechanism that the Highball bar is named after. “It was a little bit touch-and-go in the beginning that we were taking on this risk and doing this, but in the end it did work out,” said Haber. The pandemic did raise some concerns, but ultimately the architectural building design of COOP Architecture and the landscape architecture of Confluence brought together the industrialmodern Railyard Flats building. She says the best compliment she’s gotten on the building was that it looked as though it simply had been rehabilitated rather than recently constructed. “It just shows what new construction can be,” explained Haber. “It’s not just the white box. It’s not just the cheap materials that are seen in new buildings.” The structure and many accents of the architecture are made from mass timber, a more sustainable alternative to steel and concrete. “It creates noise dampening and a warmth I’ve never experienced in a new building,” she said. “The posts and beams came from Austria, and the floorplates and the ceilings came from British Columbia.”

Connecting the flats to the surrounding buildings, the exterior is constructed of brick. “Just building with noble materials makes a difference that people can see and feel,” she said. In a few places, corten steel ties everything together.

“It’s a nice balance between the industrial nature of our location and the warmth of the mass timber,” said Haber. “It’s a wonderful combination.” Housed inside the downtown addition are the offices of CO-OP Architecture, Confluence, Pendar Properties, and the bar group with Highball.

Residing on the Rails
For those looking to move into the urban lifestyle downtown, they can seek residence in Railyard Flats. Apartments range from studio layouts to a threebedroom option. “In the apartments, we utilized custom cabinetry from Showplace [Cabinetry],” said Haber. “We have done beautiful luxury finishes, heated tile bathroom floors, balconies on every unit, and we’re pet friendly.” Other building amenities include a courtyard, an extension of Downtown Sioux Falls’s Sculpture Walk, a bike trail, the Urban Fitness Room, a common space for entertaining, and a rooftop deck. “That rooftop includes a gas fire pit, tons of seating options, pergolas, dining areas, a gas grill, and some gardens,” she explained. She says that living at Railyard Flats allows people to experience an urban lifestyle, while maintaining some connection to nature. Haber expanded, “Instead of living in a crowded urban environment, you’re able to step outside and hear the birds and walk your dogs on a beautiful path.”

Having been a tattoo artist for years, Ally Rae Haney felt that something was missing in the community.

“At the time, there was not a tattoo shop that was owned and operated by women, and I felt called to change that,” said Haney.
“Our goal is to provide an inclusive, calming atmosphere to ensure women, persons of color, and LGBTQ+ members of our community feel safe and celebrated at our shop,” said Haney.
In January 2020, she opened Moon Rae Tattoo in Sioux Falls with two other artists, Erin Bennett and Sierra Nicole Miller.
At Moon Rae, they work to emphasize the importance of making each tattoo its own, a value of Haney’s. “In effort to maintain a highly personalized experience, our work is custom, we operate by appointment only, and we require a consultation prior to booking a tattoo,” she said. Haney shares more about her experience with being a tattoo artist and delves into some of her favorite ways to spend her time.

Unfortunately, Black Sheep no longer exists, and I miss having a place that you could gather and spend time with a culturally diverse group of people and feel safe to be yourself. Having worked in an environment that celebrated a true sense of community, I would love our shop to go beyond tattooing and providing a safe space. Our goal is to be active in our community and start working with local businesses to raise awareness of available resources, and do our part to fuel change in Sioux Falls.

While Haney enjoys doing tattoos with fine lines and stippling, the other artists at the tattoo boutique have different design styles. Miller favors heavy lines, blackwork, and mostly natural and floral designs with a sprinkling of occult work. Bennett’s style varies quite a bit with much of her favorite portfolio work being of pop culture, like books, games, and cartoons.

Since its doors opened in 2001, Yankton staple Mojo’s 3rd Street Pizza has been trying to get everyone to do as its motto demands: “Enjoy a slice of the good life.” In 2020, owner Jeff Dayhuff finally decided it was time for change.

While he had plans for a remodel for years, it never felt like the right time. “Last year, we started gutting the place when we were closed down from COVID,” said Dayhuff. “It was a last minute thing. If we’re ever going to do it, we’re going to do it now.”

Over a five week period, when the pandemic’s first shock hit the nation, Mojo’s doors were closed. Inside was a construction zone. “Every wall, everything is different,” explained Dayhuff. A new aesthetic feature of the pizza bar is some exposed brick that Dayhuff ’s daughter insisted they maintain and uncover. “We accidentally knocked part of the plaster off on this, and all of a sudden there was bricks,” he said. “It took a whole extra day for four of us to knock all the plaster off this.”
Along with the brick walls, the location of the bar and the bartop itself have changed. “That bar was in the waterfront restaurant that I used to own from 2000-2008, and it’s been sitting in storage until we redid it and put it in here,” said Dayhuff. But the restaurant itself wasn’t the only thing due for a remodel. They also reimagined their pizzas. “We wanted a really fluffy crust on the bottom and doughy in the middle,” said Dayhuff. “We worked to get the best, fresh ingredients. We made it to what we like.”

On the menu, Mojo’s has quite a few appetizers and four, core pizzas. And if those don’t fit the palate, guests can always build their own. “Our most popular pizza is our Meat Lovers,” said manager Rayden Terca. “It’s an all-meat pizza.” Layered with cheese, the Meat Lovers is one of the 16-inch mega pizzas and comes topped with Canadian bacon, beef, italian sausage, and pepperoni. This fan favorite is a classic, much like the other three features: Single Topping, Lotz-O-Cheese, and Supreme. Every pie is made with a newlyperfected raised butter, garlic crust. Appetizers vary from Cheese Balls and Mozzarella Stix to Battered Green Beans and Egg Rolls.

by Dawn Geertsema Walking through the door of All Walks Trading Co. in downtown Sioux Falls, 605 multimedia designer Jordan Cushman and I were enveloped in a blanket of lemongrass, lavender, and more calming scents. “Being Native American and having things like wild medicinals growing on our farm, I just knew I needed to make that accessible to our community here,” said owner Miranda Koltze. “The store has been buzzing.”

Sweet Sustainably Because the Koltzes value creating a sustainable business and enduring through time, they grow many of their own herbs, including those that are sacred to indigeonous cultures like cedar, juniper, and mullein.

From the display of crystals, blankets, and beaded jewelry, to shelves upon shelves of soaps, candles, and herbal wholesale, artisanal items from local businesses and products of her own making fill the shop. Miranda gets help with the business from her young daughters, Bridget and Claudia, and from her new employee. Her husband, Alex, also plays a role. “We started out as local food producers with veggies and things like that,” she explained. “As time went on, we started raising animals.” As their farm stock grew, Miranda says she wanted to find a way to utilize everything she could.
“It was just a necessity to use every part of the animal and give honor to that animal for feeding and taking care of us,” she explained. With that in mind, she discovered a passion for making bath and body products and founded Sweetgrass Soapery. “There’s so much you can do, especially natural and herbal based,” said Miranda. “We’ve got solid lotion sticks, we do balms, healing salves, shave soaps, deodorants, and shampoos and conditioners.” For the last 10 years, Miranda has been making her own soaps. And for seven years, she’s been selling her products at the Falls Park Farmers’ Market.
“We do cater more toward the native community because we’re the only place you can find medicinal herbs that we need, like sage and sweetgrass done in a clean way and produced locally.” -Miranda Koltze 58 |

Some of her soaps include bars like Smoke Signals, Willow Woman, Mocha Mint, and Lavender Lemon w/ Poppy Seed. In March of 2021, Miranda retired from being a tattoo artist after 16 years and opened All Walks Trading Co. to sell her own products and those of many other local artisans. Opening day brought about 250 different customers.
“It’s been really neat to get to know the community through this place and to foster an appreciation for the artists and the makers who have been doing this work and didn’t have an outlet for it previously,” she said. Miranda and her daughters welcomed Jordan and I, walking us through how she creates her bath salt soaks.

“We do a ton of baths at our house, my husband and I especially. Anytime we’re feeling a little off or sick or having a bad day, my husband runs a bath.” We started with a base of epsom salt and pink himalayan salt. Then we each got to choose from a vibrant array of herbs to mix in, including calendula flower, rose pedals, hops flower, hibiscus flower, and lavender flower.

“You’re going to treat it like a tea,” explained Miranda. “They all have really great properties for skin and great properties for tea.” I opted for all but the sleep-inducing hops flower, wanting lavender for relaxation, hibiscus for the fun pink colors, calendula for skin wellness, and roses for some self-love. “Who doesn’t want roses in their bathtub? I love roses, and they hold a lot of the same properties as lavender: soothing, calming, and metaphysically will promote self-love and healing,” said Miranda. Jordan, on the other hand, went for them all. When I asked, he was adamant in his excitement to use his bath salt soak. I guess his girlfriend is out of luck. Sorry, Whitney.

Strom Architecture
Residing Lakeside by Dawn Geertsema “This is a labor of love,” said architect Jackson Strom of Strom Architecture. Strom says that seven years ago he finished working on the largest-scale project so far in his career. The 4,600-square-foot modern home with a two-stall garage is located on the shore of Pickerel Lake.

Chilling on the Waterfront “It’s very modern,” said Strom. “It looks and feels like it could be sitting in California. It’s on a narrow lot, and we definitely maximized the square footage we could fit on the lot and the views of the lake.” Those same lake views are one of the biggest appeals of the home for the clients, according to Strom. Up the floating staircase and across the second living space, there is a sitting area surrounded by three walls of windows, looking right out over the calm waters. “You’re literally sitting on the lake up there,” said Strom. “You can’t see any land. It’s pretty incredible.” The window wall closest to the lake slants outwards, as if reaching for the water. “The slanted wall of windows just kind of happened on a whim,” Strom laughed. “Sometimes those accidents end up being the most exciting part of a design.”

Narrow Designs, Big Plans According to Strom, the clients wanted to maximize the space on their narrow, 50-foot-wide lot. The main floor is home to the master suite, while the second floor is home to four more bedrooms. With those five bedrooms is five full bathrooms and a powder room on each floor.

Strom says that the master suite includes a large bathroom, a spacious closet that doubles as an office, and a laundry room, all of which are connected and lead back to the main hallway. Also on the main floor is the kitchen. From the refrigerator with two 36-inch columns, to the three ovens, to the island in the center, nothing about the kitchen appears narrow. Strom says around the perimeter of the kitchen, the counters are quartz and the backsplash is carrara marble, both made to complement the real focal point of the kitchen: the island. The island is made of quartzite, a slightly translucent material, according to Strom. And under that heavy slab of quartzite is a LED light pad that the clients use as a night light.

Tech Savvy “The clients love technology,” Strom laughed. “There might be a TV in every room.” And that includes the master closet. When getting ready in the master bath, to the left is a view of the lake, and to the right is the closet TV. One of the final features added to the home was the largest TV the clients could find at the time, a TV with an 80-inch screen.
Strom also recalls the feature that one of his clients was most excited about was the large audio and video tower from Lang’s Audio, TV & Appliance in the mechanical room. “I remember [the client] showing it to me, and I didn’t think much of it,” recalled Strom. “That was the one thing he seemed very very excited about, and I thought to myself, ‘Well there’s a lot of things to be excited about in this home.’”

Modern Designs The clients hired Dave Arlt, owner of Interior Design Concepts in Aberdeen, to tackle the furnishings and décor, according to Strom.
A Project to Be Proud of Throughout the build, there is a light and airy combination of materials, including various types of wood and stone. From the walnut cabinets in the kitchen to the stone all the way from a quarry in Arkansas, Strom says the clients didn’t skimp on anything. “It’s probably a good testament of when you put some of these nicer materials and sweat the details up front on some of these projects, they feel better over time,” speculated Strom. Strom worked on this project as a side job, still working at an architectural firm in Fargo. Back in October 2019, Strom started Strom Architecture, and because of the clientele he built up prior, he’s been busy ever since. T H E D E S I G N I S S U E septembe r 2 021
After years, Strom is still just as proud of the lake house as the day he was finished with it. “This is a project that even going back to it six months ago, it feels just as good as it did when it was recently completed,” assured Strom. “I can’t say that about every project I’ve worked on.”

FernsonFest 2021 FERNSON BREWING COMPANY | SEPTEMBER 25 | 1 P.M. FernsonFest will bring various musicians, beers, and people to the brewery in north Sioux Falls to just enjoy the music and sip with friends.
After a two-year hiatus, FernsonFest will take over the outside of the brewery on the north side of Sioux Falls. “We want to provide Fernson fans a fun event where they can celebrate South Dakotan beer, culture and entertainment,” said Helland. Any guests can stop by to grab a drink from Fernson’s wide selection of craft beers and Skip Day Hard Seltzers. Local food trucks will also be available including Old Skool Jersey Rippers & Balls, and Fat Kid Filly’s.
“We’ve created an immersive experience inspired by our adventures from places like the Turner County Fair, your local farmers’ market and festivals of yesteryear,” said Helland. “We’ve got a lot of tricks up our sleeves, and there will be plenty of county fair-like fun.” This being the fifth ever FernsonFest, Helland says that that anticipation is rising as every year brings a better, more exciting event to the brewery. “Spirits are always high at FernsonFest,” added Helland. “Our fans know how to relax and have a good time.”
Various musicians will play the event including local indie rock band We All Have Hooks for Hands, Sioux Falls supergroup Clover Fold, and live radio show covering gardening and rock ‘n’ roll Rock Garden Tour. Though he says there are many reasons to be excited about the festival, Helland can’t wait to relax. “I’m excited for the opportunity to unplug, hang outside and meet new people. Tasty beer, delicious food, rock ‘n’ roll and dancing is the perfect way to spend a day.”+

These businesses have been in Suzannah Reaves’s family since her grandfather, Lloyd Reaves, created them. “Our motto at Reaves is ‘Make it last, Make it Reaves,’ and we take that very seriously,” she said. “We want your building to last for generations to come, and we build them strong enough to do so.”

Random Facts
1. I have a slight obsession with dogs. I have three labs currently, and they are pretty much my whole life. We do most everything together, and if we can’t, I’m wishing we could. 2. I dream of one day owning a piece of land, putting up a Reaves Building, rescuing roughly 40-50 dogs, owning some horses, goats, chickens, lamas, a cow or two, wearing denim overalls and a baseball cap all day, and just being really happy in that world. 3. My family and I live within a two block radius of each other. It’s seriously the best thing. 4. I love the people I work with. We are like a big family and I deeply respect each of them. I realize so much that none of what we do at Component Manufacturing and Reaves would be possible without them, and I’m just so thanksful to them. 5. Here is a word of advice: Tell people you love them, and tell them often. Find your people, and surround yourself with the good. Find something you enjoy, and work hard at it. This life is short, and it’s meant to be done with love, with kindness, and a deep appreciation for the good you find.

Tucked away in Aberdeen at the end of Second Avenue NW is a historical gem in danger of fading into oblivion. Older locals may know about the Easton Castle hidden past a smattering of industrial buildings, but newer residents—and many people across the entire state—likely have never heard about the beautiful old home where famed Oz series author L. Frank Baum once spent time.
Aberdeen’s famous resident gave the first tour of the grand house when it was owned by businessman C. A. Bliss, who showed off his wealth by constructing in 1889 a mansion in an area known as West Hill and promoted by Baum’s brother-in-law, Thomas Clarkson Gage. Bliss referred to his home as O-TE-LA. Just three years later, financial issues forced Bliss to sell the castle to Carroll Francis (C.F.) Easton, a native New Yorker and area banker who finished it in the grandest style of the day. “The Eastons chose the crème de la crème when it came to furnishing the home,” said current owner Tandy Holman. By 1904, the Eastons bricked over the original wooden facade per designs developed by son Russell, then a civil engineering student. The Easton family lived a seemingly lovely life in the castle with their children (two daughters, Violet and Hazel, completed the family, although Hazel died at age 28 in 1918).

C.F. Easton died in 1935, with ownership passing to Russell. After his mother Eva died in 1944, Russell shut himself away until his death in 1956, triggering a decade of disrepair and vandalism for the Easton Castle. In fact, the home was scheduled for demolition when veterinarian Sam Holman toured the home in 1965, recognizing instantly the immense historical value beneath the layers of dust and grime.
“Dad had been a contractor before, so he knew it had good bones,” said Tandy. Sam bought it from the Easton heirs in 1967 and established his vet practice in the home. Tandy returned to the home 37 years ago to help her father with his vet practice and never left. She’s been a stalwart supporter of the home’s historical importance not just to Aberdeen, but also to the story of Baum. “You will never find this again anywhere,” said Tandy. “There are hundreds of years of fauna in the trees... why would we destroy that?” That is her greatest fear. She and sister Margaret Holman James are tending to the home and promoting it as a historical destination, as well as a nature adventure by staying in the campground developed in the 20 acres of lush forest. You can take a tour of the home or even rent a few rooms for events or overnight stays.
There’s No Place Like Home Before being bricked over, the home was painted green. Legend has it that L. Frank Baum named Emerald City in his book series after the enormous green mansion on the western hill of Aberdeen.

Somewhere Over the Rainbow Matilda Jewell Gage, who spent time in the castle as a child and became the Easton’s insurance agent as an adult, likely inspired the character of Dorothy in her uncle’s famous Wonderful Wizard of Oz series.
The pandemic complicated many of those efforts, but the Holman sisters remain optimistic about the home’s importance while being realistic about its tenuous future. “It will not survive another private ownership,” said Tandy. The sisters remain undeterred. They watched their father toil away keeping the home up in a way that would have made its namesake family proud, and they want to continue his legacy by doing the same. It’s not an easy job, given the scale of the home, the amount of items that have made their way within its walls, and the fact that Tandy and Margaret are at retirement age. The Easton Castle/O-TE-LA Conservancy has been established as a nonprofit entity, and Aberdeen resident and meteorologist Scott Doering serves as its president.

“We hope to buy the castle and preserve it for years to come,” said Doering. “We want it to be a spot for people to come visit, and we want to save the large forest surrounding the castle.” Doering adds that the small board of only a handful of volunteers are passionate about saving the historic home, and they have many ideas for possible fundraisers. More than anything, they need more help and for people to know the castle still exists.

Because Sam Holman turned the original kitchen into his vet clinic, his wife Jacintha designed a new one that was installed in the home’s front parlor. The entire apparatus was constructed out of horse stalls from the carriage house that can be removed completely.
“I think people know it’s here, but they don’t know the history behind it,” said Scott. “If you’re coming through [Aberdeen], reach out and come do a tour, rent a room, or stay in the campground and experience life the way it was more than a century ago.”

Megan Peterson by Dawn Geertsema Megan Peterson began her career as an independent designer fresh from college. “As my portfolio and client list grew, I was continually disappointed in the service and options we received over the years through other local stores,” said Peterson. When these stores couldn’t provide her what she wanted, she curated her own design showroom in downtown Sioux Falls called Design House. “We are a small, hands-on company who pride ourselves in providing the best service and latest products from the industry’s best manufacturers at all price points,” she added. Peterson lets 605 into her head, sharing about both her professional and personal experiences.

5 QUESTIONS WITH PETERSON WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT INTERIOR DESIGN? For me, it’s the perfect mix of business and creativity. My days are a combination of sales, job-site walkthroughs with contractors, and design development meetings with clients. I also really love getting to know the clients’ lifestyles and creating spaces that allow for them and their families to live in more functional homes they are proud to live in.
HOW DO YOU SPEND TIME WHEN YOU AREN’T WORKING? We travel as much as we possibly can, either with the kids or just a long weekend with my husband. If we can’t get away, live music or a good meal and cocktails at one of our favorite local spots is a good reset. I have also spent a fair amount of time this summer on golf courses, but my game has yet to improve.
WHEN DID YOU FIRST BECOME INTERESTED IN INTERIOR DESIGN? I wanted to be a designer for as long as I can remember. It was the only career I researched in school, and I only applied to colleges with accredited design programs. There was never a back up plan, and there still isn’t one.
WHICH SEASON OF THE YEAR DO YOU MOST THRIVE IN? It would have to be spring or fall. The fresh, re-building that occurs in the spring is very inspiring and a wonderful mindset after a long winter. But the mom in me has grown to appreciate the change that occurs in the fall after a busy summer of kids’ activities and weekend travels that turns back into a cool, slower routine. Also, it is Husker football season, so there’s that.
