The holidays evoke different emotions from different people. A joyest family time full of love and emotional warmth, or as John Bender said in 1985’s The Breakfast Club, “You know what I got for Christmas this year? It was a banner f***in' year at the old Bender family. I got a carton of cigarettes. The old man grabbed me and said, ‘Hey, smoke up, Johnny!’” My point? Becky Tomac has always had a love of art, design, and all things retro. Originally from a small town outside of the Black Hills, Keldron, Becky adored vacations with her family in the Hills and decided to move there on a permanent basis. Today, she is known for her colorful and creative designs with her business Oh Geez! Design.

Growing up, Tomac says she loved collecting ads out of magazines, drawing in high school, and crafting in her free time. She decided to go to school at South Dakota State University in Brookings to pursue a career in copywriting, but quickly realized that a career path leading to a big city or corporate design was not really what she wanted.

“I started to fall in love with the creative side of copywriting and design,” said Tomac.

Instead of her original plan, Tomac graduated with a Bachelor of Arts with a mass communications major and minor in graphic design. After college, Tomac moved back to the Black Hills area and began her graphic design career using her passion for typography and color every day.

“It all began by designing and printing greeting cards for a craft show I did with my sisters in our hometown,” said Tomac.

From there, the possibilities launched into something far beyond what she had imagined.

“It may sound super cheesy, but I’m just grateful every day that I get to do this. I still get super excited whenever I see someone in a hat or pass a car with an Oh Geez! sticker.”

Tomac continued, “I later started creating more locallythemed items. Inspired from finding cool gifts by independent artists on visits to Colorado, I wanted to create something like that for South Dakota locals and visitors.”

The business has been kind of a family effort. Angus, Tomac’s black lab, is one of the biggest helpers.

“He provides emotional support and makes sure I take lots of breaks for walks, and my family has been so supportive as well,” said Tomac.

in from time to time, too. One sister is a graphic designer and offers another set of eyes on products, and her parents and friends have helped deliver orders, set up her booth, and even run the booth at events.

Tomac added, “From start to finish, these designs are original and created by a local, South Dakota, independent artist. I even use local screen printers and businesses for printing needs.”

One hundred percent local, Tomac says Oh Geez! Design doesn’t even outsource product orders.

“Having a consistent and recognizable brand identity is very important to me, and unique, high-quality designs or products are a huge part of that,” she said.

Becky also finds inspiration from the great outdoors of the Black Hills, illustrator Charley Harper, and designer Milton Glaser. Her home office is littered with a collection of inspiration. What may look like a chaotic scene to some is a room filled with ideas and creativity to Tomac.

“I love collecting anything vintage, especially midcentury modern design, and cool typography, from mugs to vinyl album covers,” said Tomac.

“'Oh geez' Is an expression that I remember my mom saying growing up, so I thought it was a nice fit when I started with my greeting card designs and has a good Midwestern vibe. I also get a lot of comments on it when I’m doing shows, so it’s a great conversation starter.”

For a while, the business was more of a side project or hobby. It was a passion, but Tomac says it didn’t really pay the bills. She had a full-time job that worked four days a week allowing her to have a longer weekend to work on what she loved.

“I launched an Etsy store with primarily greeting cards, and it wasn’t long before I was getting inquiries for wholesale from nationwide stores,” said Tomac. “My work’s even been featured in Food Network and Taste of Home Magazine.”

The Etsy site for Oh Geez! Design was launched 15 years ago. Only recently did Becky make the switch to full-time. In 2020, the side-business started to brew into something more. Becky says that her full-time job was bringing in a new generation of talent, and she felt that it was time to move into Oh Geez! Design full-time.

Tomac said, “I felt like I was leaving my employers in good hands. The next generation of talent was able to offer a new view and everyone was fitting in with the team so well.”

Whitney Donohue has been both an entrepreneur and an artist since she was a little girl. Her creative roots reach back to her elementary school days, when she and her sister set up shop on a street corner selling woven embroidery floss bracelets.

Growing up, Donohue spent a lot of time in her family’s craft room and became adept at a weaving technique known as macrame.

“I never would have guessed at that age that I would have my own business one day,” reflected Donohue. She says these simple skills laid the foundation for her small business, The Daily Collective in Sioux Falls.

The motivation to make her childhood dream a reality came when the pandemic hit in Donohue’s final year of graduate school. As her handson classes turned virtual, she felt a desire to rekindle her creative talents.

She began making décor and macrame products in her own home, listing them on Facebook Marketplace just to see what might happen.

The result? They sold. “Sometimes faster than I could wrap my head around,” remembered Donohue.

“The Daily Collective is my creative outlet outside of my day to day. It allows me to exercise my creativity with my hands.”

Friends and family flocked to support the blooming business, as did clients from all over the country.

“It started with a passion for creating things by hand,” said Donohue, explaining the reason for her business’s name: “products for everyday use.”

Her line of products include graphic tees and sweatshirts, macrame key chains, bookmarks, pacifier clips, wall hangings and plant hangers, glassware and mugs, canvas totes, and more.

When asked what her favorite product to create was, Donohue’s response is simple: “I really enjoy creating everything that I make.”

Seeing her designs come to life is therapeutic for her, and after receiving requests to share her talents, she began teaching classes.

“For me, viewing and creating macrame is a therapeutic, calming process. I wanted to share that experience with others.”

In each Learn How class, Donohue shares her step-by-step process of making something out of macrame. For public classes, those who sign up can make anything from a plant hanger to a keychain to a wall hanging.

For a private class, Donohue works with the party to decide which product is best for their needs.

The classes are for anyone who wants to learn and are the perfect occasion for a team building exercise, a bridal party activity, or just an afternoon of carefree creativity.

Additionally, Donohue’s sparkling personality makes her an ideal teacher to learn from and laugh with.

“My favorite part is getting to exercise and share my creative pursuits and build relationships with people at the same time,” she said.

“Whether it’s macramé, shirts, or any other product, seeing the vision come to life is one of the best parts of the process.”

According to Donohue, the process has a very calming effect on those who take the time to learn.

Though Donohue currently works full time at JLG Architects as a project associate, she spends as much time as she can working on her creative pursuits outside the office.

She frequently participates in pop up shops and craft fairs with other local vendors, and has plans to expand her services.

In the year to come, she hopes to expand her line of products and widen her availability for teaching classes.

In the early 1980s, downtown Sioux Falls had more empty storefronts than full. Jeff Danz and his brother, Greg, both lived downtown and said they wanted to be part of its “renewal.”

“We spent our lunch breaks looking at empty buildings and landed on 209 S. Phillips Ave.,” recalled Jeff. “Pigeons were the only tenants in the previous 20 years. The wood floors were warped from years of a leaky roof, and the front of the building was covered with large tiles from 1950’s Kinney Shoes and a rough wood façade from a 1960’s waterbed store.

The next year, the Danz brothers restored the building to its original state and began planning their business, which is now a Sioux Falls staple, Zandbroz Variety.

“We knew we would sell books, have a soda fountain coffee bar, and we would carry things that ‘big box’ didn’t,” said Jeff. “Our mission was, and is still, to create an entertaining environment with an eclectic inventory that is constantly evolving.”

Zandbroz Variety opened in 1989, and the brothers shared managerial duties. In 1993, the duo opened a second location in Fargo, ND. Greg moved his family to Fargo and still runs that location. Jeff’s wife, Jamie Scarbrough, manages the Sioux Falls store with the help of long-time employee Justin Enger

The store has a curated selection of books, stationery, toys, candles, body care products, jewelry, and what Jeff says is “the unexpected.” The holiday season brings even more inventory to browse.

“Funny ornaments, cards, seasonal tea, candles… We always look forward to the crazy ornaments that no one else carries,” said Jeff. “Snarky Christmas cards lift our customers spirits, seasonal tea is nice and comforting after a long day on your feet, and finally a winter scented candle, like pine or firewood, keeps us in the mood at work.”

One thing Zandbroz Variety is definitely known for is having gifts with a sense of humor.

“With all the crazy stuff going on in the world, we all need a good laugh. Some of our vendors are doing some creative, fun stuff with socks, coffee mugs, stickers, and cards,” said Jeff.

Jeff says the supply chain issues from the pandemic resulted in Zandbroz Variety to look for new vendors, during which they discovered new resources and products. As a result, the store now has a greater selection of inventory and price points.

“We are sourcing more from small entrepreneur-driven companies in the United States and a few from Great Britain,” he said.

They also have an online store, but Jeff says the in-store experience and enjoying downtown is what is more important to them.

“Doing our best” is a motto he says they strive for every day, and the word has traveled worldwide and through many generations.

“Visitors, business travelers, and people come home to see family tell us that Zandbroz is an important part of their Sioux Falls visit,” said Jeff. “We’ve met three generations of many families. Toddlers that came to the store with their parents are visiting us with kids of their own, a common occurrence. We don’t take that for granted, we hope their experience inspires the next visit.”

Another change over the last few years has been the addition of the vintage area in the back of the store. Jeff says people have lovingly called it “the museum,” as pieces include a restored Concert Roller Organ, a folk art tribute to World War II, and a large vintage circus poster collection.

Jeff and Scarbrough take work home with them, quite literally. The couple lives in the residence above Zandbroz Variety and say they feel like they live on “Eat Street” with all of the dining options.

“We think that Juniper is a ‘neighborhood’ restaurant, or that we feel like if you know us, you are family,” said Alexis Sullivan, co-owner and manager of Juniper in Rapid City.

The “elevated comfort food” restaurant made the move from Sheridan Lake Road to Canal Street in the Landstrom’s Original Gold Creations building in 2020 a few years after purchasing the company from Pete Franklin

“ Matthew worked under Pete at Delmonico Grill and followed him to Juniper,” recalled Alexis. “Pete was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer in 2015, and Matthew and I talked with Pete and decided to buy the business from him in February 2016.”

Deciding to move in the fall of 2018, the build took longer than expected, and the opening happened in March 2020 when the pandemic shut down eateries and other businesses worldwide.

“We, like everyone else, learned how to adapt to the ever-changing time,” said Alexis. “We developed a three-course menu for take-out that we still have today. Our new location has helped us grow and encourages us to grow, too.”

While the new location isn’t as much as a “neighborhood restaurant” nowadays, the couple says they strive to give that same friendly vibe.

“Our atmosphere is very homey, and we want you to feel like you can sit and enjoy yourself without worrying about a time constraint,” said Alexis.

The new space allows Juniper to have more tables, which can welcome more guests for the Sullivan’s specialized menus. One of the most popular menu items is the Autumn Apple Salad with chopped romaine dried cranberries, smoked bacon, feta, toasted pecans, sweet poppy seed vinaigrette, and is garnished with apple and pear slices. Others include the French Onion Soup, Mushroom Ragu ( BH Lion's Mane, grey and pink oyster mushrooms with baby portabellas, sweet bell peppers, zucchini, and yellow squash over creamy polenta with Manchego cheese finish), and the Petite Filet (yukon gold mashed potatoes, thymeroasted carrots, blackberry gastrique, and garlic parsley compound butter).

Menu items change every three weeks, so Alexis says people come back often to try new things. It’s also for that reason that she says it’s hard to choose her personal favorites.

“It’s hard to pick since the menu changes frequently. It's so fun to try all the different options and fall in love with one, then have something the next day and fall in love with it too,” said Alexis. “But if I was forced to pick, I would say it is the Petite Filet. I love the mix of sweet and savory.”

Luckily for her and others, the filet is a staple on the menu and will always be available.

The team at Juniper says they strive to make everything from scratch and source as many local ingredients as they can.

“Our chefs Jason Sprague and Preston Pearson come in each day around noon to start prepping,” said Alexis. “We make everything to order and focus on whole ingredients and keep dietary restrictions in mind as well. Our proteins are cooked either in cast iron or on a charbroiler.”

Juniper sources mushrooms from Black Hills Mushrooms, and other ingredients have come from Homegrown Pork and Poultry, Whey Back Farms, Elk Creek Foods, and Owl Creek Organics & Natural Products

“We just started working with two local beef providers for this upcoming spring season,” said Alexis. “Our micro greens come from Sarah Bloniak at A Mother’s Heart Microgreens. We use Dakota Seafood for our fish options, and Prairie Harvest and Wild Idea Buffalo for our unique meat options.”

The Sullivans describe their dishes as “New American,” and that the everchanging menu always goes with the season.

“We make almost everything in house, and we love that we know all the ingredients in our dishes.”

“We want the food to feel familiar, while also feeling like something you may have never had before,” said Alexis. “We try to match the seasons, so when it is warm outside you can enjoy a lighter entrée and when it’s cold, we have options to warm you right up.”

Alexis says they have a large community of “regulars” that they know on a personal level. Having the new location has also brought more travelers and newcomers, as well. The rotating menu also keeps people coming back to try more.

“It gives us room to have options for everyone,” said Alexis. “If you don’t see something this week, come back and check again and we may have something you are craving.”

But it’s the locals, they say, that make them thankful over the holidays and every day.

“We love our community here in Rapid,” Alexis continued, “and without them we would have never made it this far.”

“I believe we are unique because we try to source as local as possible.”

MORE THAN ONE WAY TO CORRECT YOUR

In the world of corrective eye surgery, there’s a good chance you’ve heard of LASIK. But what about PRK?

Also known as photorefractive keratectomy, PRK is another option for patients looking to correct blurred vision caused by nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism.

LASIK vs. PRK

LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) and PRK are both laser eye surgery options used to correct vision problems caused by a misshapen cornea. The procedures are very similar, but there are a few key differences patients should know.

With LASIK, the surgeon uses a laser to create a flap on the surface of the cornea, allowing for a small part of the underlying tissue to be reshaped with a laser. The flap is then returned to its original position, acting as a cover for the treated area. The flap and the treated area naturally adhere as the recovery process begins.

In PRK, the surface layer of the cornea is removed entirely, meaning no flap is created. Just like in LASIK, the surgeon then uses a laser to reshape the exposed corneal tissue, but since there is no flap to cover the treated area, the surgeon will place a contact lens in your eye to act as a bandage as the cornea heals. You’ll keep the lens in for four to six days.

“We have been farming here since the early 1900s,” said farmer and entrepreneur Trent Kubik. “My greatgrandfather homesteaded here in 1909 and we have been farming and ranching here ever since and doing wildlife hunting since 2006 when we started our hunting lodge.”

Trent started a farm and ranch in 2013 with his wife Shannon and his two brothers Troy and Bruce Vanderwerff. The family business has continued down the generations as a corn, soybean, milo, alfalfa, and cow-calf operation.

“We just crossed the century mark about a decade ago raising cattle and growing crops,” said Trent.

The farm and ranch is located in south central South Dakota, which Trent refers to as “the golden triangle of South Dakota when it comes to pheasant hunting.”

“Between Chamberlain, Winner, and Gregory, we are kind of right in the center and that is where we farm, raise cattle, and have [Antler Ridge Lodge], as well,” said Trent.

Trent and his brother Troy also own Elevate Agronomics in Winner, which they started in 2020 and provides things like corn (silage and grain), soybeans, alfalfa, livestock products, seed treating, soil mapping and testing, pest control, seed cleaning, crop protection, and Elevate Agronomics Programs

The hunting lodge, Antler Ridge Lodge, is also in Hamill and is mostly run by his parents, Steve and Donna . Built in 2006, the 6,000 square foot lodge accommodates up to 16 hunters at a time, and in 2008 the Kubiks added a smaller lodge to complement the main lodge with up to four hunters at a time.

Working with family can be challenging at times.

“It is a little crazy at times, if I am being honest. I think everybody that works with their families, especially when there's a lot of operations that are brothers or parents that are operating together, it’s not all roses all the time... but it makes it a lot more enjoyable,” said Trent.

“for somebody who is removed from the farm, I would like them to know that the care that we take and the pride that we take in producing the products that go into people's everyday lives and some of the hardships that we face.”

What's also not “roses all the time” as a farmer is dealing with the elements.

“When it comes to weather, it dictates everything we do. Whether it’s crops, cattle, or our ag retail business. For example, if it's raining in the morning, that shuts everything down,” said Trent. “During harvest season when everything is ramped up and ready to go, we have everything set out from the night before. If we wake up and even if it is a sprinkle, it really shuts things down and we have to change focus on the fly.”

Trying to stay positive can be a challenge at times in moments like these.

“That takes a toll, especially mentally, seeing crops dying in the field every day,” said Trent. “To farm here in south central South Dakota, you have to be pretty strong minded, because this is not the first year and probably will not be the last year that this has happened.”

He notes that a popular phrase for these moments is, “There’s always next year.”

“There are a lot of things that are in our control that we fumble sometimes and learn from, and lord knows we have had a lot of learning curves over the past 10 years when my brothers and I started farming on our own,” continued Trent, “but it's one of those things that you have to remind yourself that you are not in control, God is in control of this so we just have to manage around it and how do we make decisions based on it and we are always hopeful for next year.”

Trent represents District 9 with the SD Corn Growers Association and got involved around four years ago. Focusing on policy, Trent says they work directly with state representatives locally in the state legislature as well as U.S. senators and representatives in Washington, D.C. to ensure policy doesn’t affect farmers’ right to farm.

“It’s ensuring that there are the tools available from a policy side that will help farmers as well as not having too much policy and regulation to really harm the way farmers operate. Our primary focus is outreach,” said Trent. “We’re a member based organization, so farmers in South Dakota pay membership dues and that is where our revenue comes from to work on these issues.”

Growing up, Trent says he knew about SD Corn from seeing the marketing side, but being part of the group has made him realize the impact it has on the biggest industry in South Dakota.

Trent says, “It really opened my eyes that if we didn’t have this voice as farmers, especially here in Pierre as well as on the federal level, we would struggle as farmers to do the things that we do.”

And it doesn’t just help farmers with corn.

HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS

trent’s wife shannon shares how thanksgiving and christmas have a special place in their hearts for different reasons.

• The hunting lodge here gets completely decorated during the holiday season. My mother-in-law has every Christmas tree you could ever imagine.

• During Thanksgiving, we have a group of hunters that comes here every single year that gets together and we spend time with them, so they are here to hunt, but also to eat Thanksgiving together and we join them. They are basically a part of the family now.

• Our family comes and hangs out here on Christmas together, which is really great getting Trent and all of his brothers together, so that is four boys and all the kids are here. Sometimes my mother-in-law's entire family is here, she is one of nine, so we have lots of people here. Even my family, I grew up in Nebraska, but they will come up and we have all of our family get together here at the lodge because it is a great place for us to all hang out.

“SD Corn not only helps corn farmers, but consequently we have soybean farmers, cattle producers, and land owners. We strive for all agriculture, and that is our main goal when we talk to these representatives from a policy front,” he said.

While being in a family business and dealing with the everyday challenges of farming can be difficult, Trent says his passion is also his career.

“[My family] is living out the dream in our eyes. We get to work with family, our family is right here,” said Trent. “We all live close together, our kids get to grow up together, and it's pretty hard to beat this life, too. Sometimes it's frustrating, don’t get me wrong, but we wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Located in Spearfish, a mother-daughter trio began Freckled Fox - a boutique for the community that’s kind, caring, and fashion-forward.

Freckled Fox, which began as an idea of Amanda Goetz in college, opened in 2017. Having previous retail experience, the Goetz girls started their own store with the intention of serving women who value individuality and show it through their style.

The cozy boutique sells an assortment of items from jackets and outerwear to accessories and gifts. These items can be found on Freckled Fox’s website, but they also boast a local storefront. However, they keep their selection small so shoppers are able to find unique items.

Before opening Freckled Fox, the Goetzes knew which location they wanted, and a conversation with the space’s prior occupant set things in motion.

“She happened to be at our garage sale and said, ‘Yeah, I’m thinking about moving everything to Belle Fourche with some other partners.’ I looked at Amanda and I said, ‘That’s it. It’s time. That’s the sign,’” said Beth Goetz.

The space, a 500-square-foot old garage located at 312 W. Jackson Blvd., has housed many of Spearfish’s businesses over the years, most recently a once-amonth market, and the past residents are still part of the fabric of the store.

“Everybody has kind of put their own flair on the space, so when we came in, it was just adding to that,” said Amanda.

Although the storefront still has influences from businesses that have preceded it, Freckled Fox is a warm space that reflects its owners’ tastes and individual styles.

“We wanted it to be a place that we like to be and carry things that we like to wear and have in our homes,” said Beth.

But Freckled Fox may not look the exact same from visit to visit. The Goetz girls make sure it evolves. Whether it be a new light fixture or an updated logo, the boutique is constantly adjusting to remain a place at which locals and guests alike want to stop.

The inventory changes, too, aiding in the store’s goal to stay fresh. Though they carry store staples, like candles, the Goetzes give new life to Freckled Fox through small, yet impactful, changes, like offering new scents.

"We do evolve all the time, as it should."

The girls apply that same philosophy to brands, keeping some old faithfuls, while being unafraid to take risks on something new for their customers.

A true family business, the Goetzes collaborate on all parts of their business. Each girl has a say in what’s sold at Freckled Fox, and the mother and daughters act as the models for the clothing featured on both their social media pages and website.

In true small business spirit, Freckled Fox supports other local vendors, like Prairie Artisan Fragrances, a perfumery; Oh Geez! Design, a graphic design studio; and partner Sarah Goetz’s illustrations.

Freckled Fox finds other ways to support locals, too, like hosting a patio party each summer where food trucks and other pop-up vendors can showcase their products.

“It’s a good chance to highlight local vendors that we don’t carry all the time that maybe don’t do wholesale, but we love ourselves,” said Amanda. “We want to be able to feature them in our community, too.”

Freckled Fox is a communitycentric business. They say they’ll always put supporting their community ahead of competing with other businesses.

Not only does the boutique carry a wide range of items, it caters to multiple audiences, including apparel for men, a recent addition. As Sarah noted, there’s something for everyone at Freckled Fox.

Creating a welcoming environment is a top priority for the Goetzes. From their own time shopping and patronizing other businesses, they say they know how important a pleasurable experience is to the consumer.

Whether patrons are trying on clothes or simply browsing, Freckled Fox wants its customers to feel at home.

“When I go somewhere, I like to feel like I want to be there. You want people to stay and feel comfortable,” said Beth.

In addition to creating a cozy climate for shopping, the Goetz girls like to experiment with their inventory. They’re willing to test new products to see if the community is interested, ensuring some of what they sell meets current trends.

When you’re at Freckled Fox, the Goetzes say they won’t pressure you to buy anything.

“If it’s not right, it’s not right. We’re not pushy to push you to buy something because we want it to be right. We want it to be your favorite store that you come back to all the time,” said Beth.

The Goetz ladies also noted that they each care to chat with their patrons and make everyone’s

experience worthwhile. They said they want Freckled Fox to be their customers’ favorite store, a place everyone wants to return.

“We want you to enjoy your time in here and have a good experience,” said Beth.

“I love working in retail, but I wanted to do it in a way that aligned with my values,” said Sara Jamison, owner and founder of Terra Shepherd Boutique & Apothecary. “The world of sustainable and ethically-made goods can be really difficult to navigate.”

Jamison wanted to make it easier for shoppers to find beautiful items that align with their beliefs.

Her passion for sustainable fashion stemmed from learning about the human and environmental impact of the fashion industry.

“Because we are so far removed from where our clothing comes from, it’s easy to forget that there are actual people behind the clothes we buy,” said Jamison. “I have always believed in buying fewer things and investing in items built to last. Sustainable fashion is just that.”

a beautiful handbag. A high-quality bag can literally last forever. It can also pull together and elevate any outfit. Leggings, a basic t-shirt, and a denim jacket topped off with a gorgeous bag? Perfection.

playing tour guide when people stop in the shop. I enjoy making dining, shopping, and entertainment suggestions to guests who pass through. I love driving traffic to other small businesses and talking up other small businesses. getting to know their stories and what lights them up. This makes it possible to provide tailor-made recommendations for our customers and create a personalized experience. Retail can be emotionally taxing at times, but building a connection with customers and providing them with solutions makes the tough days all worth it.

this is impossible to answer. We sell items made by over 100 small makers and brands, all of which are prioritizing creating products that are good for both people and the planet. There is so much intention, skill, and love that goes into the products we sell. You can’t make me choose.

walking my two dogs with my family at one of the amazing parks in the area. Great Bear Ski Valley, Palisades State Park , or Good Earth State Park are a few of our favorites. They are gorgeous places to hike or picnic and such hidden gems in our area.

this is so tough, too. I have always loved downtown Sioux Falls. I would have to say that a few of my favorites are Zandbroz Variety, The Great Outdoor Store, and Child’s Play Toys. They have been downtown staples for so many years, but they all do an amazing job of assorting incredible products. I so admire what they are all doing, and I love introducing new people to these downtown gems.

Lyle Kroon, or better known as Sioux Falls Santa , says that his business all began through incidental events.

“I was asked to deliver presents for a friend’s children because they knew I served on the steering committee for the Festival of Trees,” said Kroon. “On occasion, the scheduled Santa would not show up and I would put on the red suit and sit in the sleigh.”

For Kroon, seeing the look on children’s faces and being able to spread an immense amount of joy to others became addicting.

Early on, news of Kroon’s visits spread quickly and as more and more opportunities arose, he decided that if he was going to do this, he was going to learn to do it correctly.

Kroon enrolled in the International University of Santa Claus and received his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in SantaClausology. Here, he had the opportunity to trace the history and traditions that were given to the Santa children know and love today.

“This brings an entirely different approach to the work as Santa, and that it is more than just putting on a big red suit and walking around saying, ‘Ho, ho, ho,’” said Kroon.

From its inception, Sioux Falls Santa has been titled a unique business in that Kroon represents a character that is loved and cherished by many people.

“It is all about living and portraying the life of a man who lived almost 1,700 years ago.” said Kroon. “It portrays the charity of the man, St. Nicholas of Myra, who we better know as Santa Claus, the giver of joy and gifts at Christmas.”

For the last 10 years, Sioux Falls Santa has been able to bring joy and wonder to a variety of parades, business parties, home, and hospice visits.

Kroon shares what he enjoys outside of playing Jolly Ol’ Saint Nick.

I love to travel, and have been fortunate to travel to 35 states and 14 different countries on five different continents.

I have taken my church choir on two tours to Branson, MO performing at four different theaters.

I have two loving step-children and four grandchildren who are very supportive of my portrayal of Santa Claus.

My three siblings have made a contribution to my business.

I have been employed with Avera Behavioral Hospital for 45 years and First Reformed Church for 46 years.

Santa’s Carolers

I work as the director of traditional worship and music at First Reformed Church. It is fun to get people involved in the choirs and lead others in worship through music. Music is such a soothing relief when life moves too fast.

Caring for Community

You will find me volunteering out at the Avera Behavioral Health Hospital, where I sit at the desk, interacting with clients three afternoons a week. It gives me a sense of fulfillment when someone stops and says, “Do you know you look like Santa?”

Knitting and New Perspectives

What would be a Tuesday night without going to Barnes & Noble and sitting with a very eclectic group that loves to knit? We sit, knit, and chat about our latest adventures, books, movies, and travels. The topics are so very enlightening and gives me a new perspective to the world we live in.

Adventurous Cuisine

Traveling and sampling different international cuisines are a very enriching experience for me. Shahi Palace in Sioux Falls is one of my favorite dining places. I am especially delighted with their Naan, Tikka Masala , and the Rice Pudding with Almonds

New Materials

When I go looking for yarn to complete a new project or fulfill a request for a friend for a knitted gift for someone, JOANN Fabric and Crafts is a place for me to go looking for the materials I will need. Being able to sort through the variety of colors, textures, and weight on the yarns available is just what I need to complete a project the way I picture it in my mind.

Dinner and a Show

Joining friends for an enjoyable experience sitting around the hibachi grill at Fuji Sushi & Hibachi Grill has always been high on my priority list. Watching the chef entertain as well as prepare your meal right in front of you is very enjoyable.

Kid in a Candy Shop

Hobby Lobby is worse than going into a candy store. The choices available for crafting are so varied and enticing.

Jolly Round Figure

It would not be unusual to find me dining at Pizza Ranch. I like to request my favorite pizza, which I call Santa’s Special Pizza. It has ground beef with lots of green olives, with red pimento and lots of cheese. The olives remind me of Christmas, and the flavors go well together.

Jeni Bergan started Chef Jeni & Company over 20 years ago in Sioux Falls and has catered a wide range of events throughout the city and surrounding areas. While off-site catering is the company’s bread and butter, Bergan’s company on Southeastern Avenue also has a private, small dining room for tastings and private gatherings of up to 30 guests.

The location also houses her newest meal service business venture, Dinner Birdie. Bergan says when events were being canceled due to the pandemic, she had to get creative, and that’s when Dinner Birdie was born.

“We take old and new family recipes and make them in small batches,” she said. “It’s a different experience than restaurant food because you sit at your own table and pull a beautiful pan of home-cooked food out of your oven like you have worked in the kitchen all day.”

Dinner Birdie meals can be stored in the fridge or freezer and typically take around 30-45 minutes to heat up in the oven after being thawed. Get to know the “classic comfort food” chef.

For those who don’t know, what is your background in the local culinary industry?

After high school graduation in 1992, I moved from Webster to Sioux Falls to study theater at Augustana College (now Augustana University). To pay my way through college, my part-time catering job had me prepping food, hauling tables and chairs, and serving parties. I was hooked. The food service industry was in my blood, but I had yet to discover just how much this foray into catering would change my life.

In 2001, after a few years bored to tears in the corporate world, I stumbled upon an ad for a $300 cooking course in a magazine. With a quick loan from my mom and a few hundred hours watching the Food Network , I quit my 9-5, took a leap of faith, and opened my own catering company.

What are some ways you’ve seen people utilize Dinner Birdie?

People give Dinner Birdie as gifts when they don’t have time to make something homemade themselves. They have gifted them to a neighbor who shoveled their driveway, or a friend who lost a loved one, or a family member who had a baby.

How would Dinner Birdie be helpful for the holidays and for events?

Our Comfort and Joy menu provides full take out meals for groups of four to 12. It includes salad, one or two entrées, side dishes, and dessert to pick up and reheat in your oven on your time schedule. We also offer a wide array of pick-up party appetizers.

What is a trend you’re loving right now with events?

I love family style meals for wedding celebrations. It’s the perfect marriage of buffet and plated service. Guests pass the food around the table like a Thanksgiving dinner. It encourages conversation and just warms my heart.

When you’re not busy coming up with creative recipes, what do you enjoy doing?

I have recently discovered that I love to paint! I am truly obsessed.
