I know I’m not the only one thinking this, but how is it already August? This issue is filled with a few of my favorite stops in South Dakota, including Gaylen’s Gourmet Popcorn. If you’re ever in need of road trip or movie night snacks, check them out in their new location in Madison for the best munchies (more on page 48)! As my time at 605 Magazine comes to an end, I can’t help but reflect on all of the amazing people I have met and worked with over the past five years. I will forever remember the fun memories that I made with the 605 team, and may you all think of me whenever you see a Post-It note! South Dakota, you have my heart.

The Wellness Collective
+
Written by Dawn Geertsema & photos by Cailyn Patterson and Emily Swan It’s time to take a step back from life’s biggest stressors to focus on health from a holistic view. Each provider at The Wellness Collective in Sioux Falls is specialized and dedicated to giving each person the proper care to improve their health and wellbeing. “The Wellness Collective is a multidisciplinary clinic. We focus on ‘whole person health,’ so we have disciplines for treatment of mental health, physical pain, and wellness,” said owner and mental health therapist Amanda Briggs Davis. To achieve their goal, they offer chiropractic care, counseling, nutrition therapy, gynecology, and more. The 605 team suited up in some athleisure attire and headed to the Collective. With me, the editor, for the adventure were lead multimedia designer Cailyn Patterson, marketing and events intern Kelsey Sutton, and multimedia editor Emily Swan. The team experienced a massage session, a body composition assessment, and a vinyasa yoga class.

Body Compos ition Analys is with Dr . Cheryl Bones As part of functional medicine, Dr. Cheryl Bones offers a bioimpedance analysis (BIA) to assess health through various factors of the body. “The BIA can tell you how much fluid you’re retaining, how much muscle mass you have, how strong your bones are, and how healthy your cells are,” said Bones. To perform the assessment, Bones attached a few sticky pads to one hand and foot to run electric current through the body. She was removing them again before I even knew the test had begun. Into her algorithm, she added my height, weight, age, activity level, and the numbers from the test to load in the results. She talked through the chart with me, discussing what all of the results meant, and what our goals would be for continued care. “A lot of these give guidelines of where we want to be but not exactly what’s wrong. So that’s what I have to figure out—then how to fix it,” said Bones. A few of the things she emphasized were the importance of gut health, physical movement, body fat percentages, possible hormone imbalances, nutrient deficiencies, blood pressure issues, and more.

Mas sag e with He ather Wilde When she heard she would be getting a massage, Cailyn was all in. She booked 30 minutes with Heather Wilde, a massage therapist. “Once the massage began, she clarified what kind of pressure I'd like (soft, medium, firm), asked if I wanted the background music to play anything in particular, and reaffirmed what's off limits or needs extra attention,” said Cailyn. At the Collective, the massage therapists also offer cupping and hot stones which aid in pain, inflammation, blood flow, relaxation, and deep-tissue massage.
NOTE: For photos, this massage was done with the lights on. For a more relaxing environment, Wilde typically conducts massages with dim lighting.

The Wellness Collective aims for yoga to be more than striking poses and pulsing to the music—the instructors encourage each yogi to flow at the rate of their own body and find what feels best for them. For some, this is the best kind of yoga as it allows them to connect with their breath and process how they can improve the integrity of the pose.

After a few months of hiatus, I’ve recently gotten back into doing yoga as part of my routine. Kelsey has done high intensity hot yoga. As for Emily and Cailyn, however, it is a whole new beast. While Schurrer guided the team and other students through the gentle vinyasa flow, each yogi sunk into the moment and focused on quality movement from downward facing dog to forward fold and warriors. I caught myself settling into each form with a smile on multiple occasions as Schurrer gave options for simplifying poses or making them more advanced. Emily definitely let out a few giggles when she found herself losing her balance. Escaping the office for this relaxing excursion was a blast. The practice ended with yoga nidra, which is a meditative state between wakefulness and sleep—essentially "resting your eyes." Through the instructor’s guiding words, a couple students dozed off a bit or got lost in our thoughts. The entire experience was gratifying. Namaste, all.

“The decks overlook the wonderful views we have from the cabins.”
NATHAN TOLLE
Tolle says rentals at Roy Lake are cost effective with fishing boats available for $75 for four hours and $135 for eight. A pontoon goes for $135 for four hours and $200 for eight, making it a great option for an adventure on a budget. “The summer is when people really love to take advantage of our kayaks, canoes, fishing boats, and pontoons,” said Tolle. “When they hear the price of the pontoon and boats, their eyes light up.” Equipment for the disc golf course and snowshoes can also be checked out like the yard games. One of the main activities at the park is fishing. Along with renting boats to get onto the water, visitors can try fishing from designated shorelines. Soon Roy Lake is expecting a new fishing pier.

In the busy season, the Lodge is open seven days a week. In the off seasons, it is available Friday to Sunday.
Located near the Lodge, the recently renovated modern cabins and suites offer space for groups who want more than just the space to sleep. Inside, guests have access to a kitchenette, private bathroom, and a living room. For those in simpler lodging options like the camping cabins and campgrounds, there are some amenities, too. “We have comfort stations to allow people who are just camping in their tents or cars to take showers in a nice, heated restroom,” said Tolle. Camping cabins offer a place to rest at night for guests who would like to spend all their time outside fishing, hiking, swimming at one of the two swim beaches, and more.

NATIVE AMERICAN HISTORY
Tolle shareD that Sica Hollow State Park, a common hiking spot to visit when staying at Roy Lake, was once Native American sacred and haunted land. He explained that the iron-rich soil would cause the natural springs in the area to run red, appearing to be bleeding. The park is known to be mysterious and beautiful.
Across a bridge and on a little island is a short walking trail for those wanting to explore the park more. But the favorite hiking spot for Roy Lake guests is a short drive away. Sica Hollow State Park is a place to dive into the Native American history and explore the naturally beautiful environment. The hiking and horseback riding trails are available in the summer, but the fall offers something special both at Sica Hollow and Roy Lake. “During the fall time, we have a lot of people from out of state, mostly down south,” said Tolle. People from different environments come to watch as the leaves change and begin to fall down to the ground in warm, autumn colors at Roy Lake. “And Sica Hollows is well known around here for being the number one spot for fall colors. It's unique and down low in a valley,” said Tolle. “There’s a wide variety of insects and tree species that live there but not anywhere else in South Dakota. It’s a beautiful time of the year.”

For Gather, having the perfect Chai Tea was invaluable. “Our Chais are kind of famous, honestly. That was one of the things I called the owners of Past Times for because I had to know what chai they used,” said Reppe. “They’re different from a chain chai. For almost 30 years, Gaylen Backus has been raising popcorn on his farm. After selling the product wholesale for some time, Gaylen’s Gourmet Popcorn took to making Caramel popcorn treats into the family’s home kitchen in Wentworth. “Gaylen has always had a farm. He originally had crops and livestock,” said Tyler, Gaylen’s son and business manager. “Then he was looking for the next big thing. He did some research on popcorn and realized he could capitalize on it. Most of the motivation comes from Dad wanting to try new things.” The company soon outgrew the kitchen and moved into the garage. Now visit the new Gaylen’s Gourmet Popcorn storefront and production space in Madison.

FACT
Gaylen’s pops three or more 50-pound bags of popcorn each week.
“We usually have about 25-30 flavors on hand. If you count all of the seasonal flavors and promotional ones we’ve done, we probably have about 50 flavors in our book that we bring in and out, or some that are ready for release some other time,” said Tyler. At any given point in time, there are typically a few more sweet options than savory, Tyler says. “Definitely our Caramel is one of the most popular because it’s one of the old-fashioned, homemade recipes we’ve got under our belts,” said Tyler. Caramel Chocolate Drizzle follows close behind. “When we get to the fun flavors, Cherry Chocolate Drizzle and Birthday Cake are very popular, as well as Bacon & Cheese,” said Tyler. Another savory classic is the Cheddar Trio, which has a mix of three cheeses. For something a little different, try Dill Pickle, Cheddar Pretzel Ale, and Buffalo Ranch.

BRING LIFE INTO FOCUS WITH
Many suffer from the inconveniences of unclear vision. Whether you’re nearsighted, farsighted or have astigmatism, you know the struggle of dry contacts, damaged glasses and the always-real risk of forgetting one or both on a trip out of town.
Your vision should improve within a few days and will continue getting better as your eyes heal. At Sanford Health, Andrew Ollerton, MD, follows up with his patients one day, one week, one month and three months after surgery to ensure their vision is improving.
If you’re tired of these struggles, there’s a solution in Sioux Falls: LASIK at Sanford Health.
Why should I choose Sanford Health for LASIK? Sanford Health is a proven leader in delivering quality care. If you’re interested in LASIK, you’ll meet with Dr. Ollerton for a free consultation at Sanford Eye Center & Optical in Sioux Falls.
What are some common vision problems and why do they occur? Nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism are three of the most common vision dysfunctions. One of two things occur in nearsightedness and farsightedness: either the eye is longer (nearsighted) or shorter (farsighted) than normal, or the cornea is more curved (near) or flatter (far) than normal. With astigmatism, the cornea has a misshapen curve. These small deformities result in refractive errors, where light entering the eye is not bent and focused properly onto the back of the eye. The scattered light hits the retina inaccurately, causing blurred vision. What is LASIK? Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) is a procedure that uses lasers to reshape the cornea, correcting refractive errors and blurred vision. It’s a common alternative to glasses and contact lenses. What can I expect from LASIK? LASIK is quick and safe with minimal discomfort. Surgeons administer eye-numbing drops as well as a mild sedative to help you relax, and the procedure is done in under 30 minutes. Patients go home the day of the surgery and typically recover within 24-48 hours.
This appointment includes an eye exam, measurements, a review of your medical history and a discussion about your goals and concerns related to your eyesight and LASIK in particular. It’s also a chance to get to know Dr. Ollerton, who will perform the surgery. Because LASIK is considered an elective procedure, your insurance may not cover the full cost. Luckily, Sanford Health offers the surgery at a highly competitive price: $4,000 for both eyes. See the difference with LASIK at Sanford Health. Call (605) 328-9200 or visit sanfordhealth.org to schedule your free consultation.

From the dough to the time dedicated to cooking the perfect pizza pie, owner Chuck Rezac says Charlie’s has maintained their ‘60s pizza-making charm. “It’s a traditional, old fashioned way of doing pizza,” he said. “It’s not fast, but doing it that way gives it a uniqueness. It’s a great time to go into a restaurant and eat pizza with your family, and there aren’t a whole lot of pizza places that do that anymore.”
T H E L I F E S T Y L E I S S U E august 2022
Rezac says Charlie’s Pizza isn’t like just any pizza at a chain restaurant because each slice has just the right flavor and texture. “It’s hard to explain the flavor because it’s not like any other pizza place with the seasoning on the hand-tossed crust,” said Rezac. The team dedicates time to making every pizza with care from toppings like fresh mozzarella cheese to the time in the oven.
In March, Charlie’s opened a new location in Sioux Falls near 69th and Western. “I have a bunch of friends and family in Sioux Falls. We happened to notice that the old Look’s Market location was open, and it was the perfect spot,” said Rezac. “I fell in love with it, so I decided to do a sit down restaurant as well as to-gos.” Whether you’re in Yankton or Sioux Falls, Rezac says Charlie’s Pizza is worth the stop.

One of the top sellers for the pizzeria is the Festus. “It has meatballs with pepper jack cheese slices overtop with sauerkraut and jalapeños. It’s very unique and very good. People think it’s weird when they first see it, but when they try it, they stick with it,” said Rezac. Many of the pizzas are named after actors from around the 1960s. “Three Stooges is really popular. It’s like a cheeseburger pizza with full slices of dill pickles on it,” said Rezac. The pie named after Betty White is spinach artichoke alfredo. For seafood lovers, there's Marilyn's Mermaid Heaven with shrimp, crab, and olives. There are also options for vegetarians with Woody Allen’s Very Veggie and for meat lovers.

THE HIGHROAD HOMESTEAD Written by Dawn Geertsema & photos by Cailyn Patterson
For some, life in the city is a dream, but for the Reiman family, their farm is the perfect canvas to bring to life all of their hobbies and whims. Adeline “Addie” Reiman lives on the edge of Brandon with the youngest three of her five children—Mateo, Antonio, Peter, Luke, and Stella. "When I get out here, I can step out of coporate America and into the country," said Addie, whose coworkers refer to her as the "Corporate Cowgirl." Throughout the property, lovingly named the Highroad, the family looks after two dogs, three horses, 15 goats, 11 hens, one rooster, one duck, and two turkeys.
“
My son went to pick up a couple chickens for me and also came home with two turkeys. It’s a joke, but they’re named Thanksgiving and Christmas. I’m not sure he’s on board.”

Addie works as a benefits consultant for Gallagher and is the Heartland region vice president.
Inside the family home, Addie, Peter, Luke, and Stella sleep upstairs, as the ground floor has a special place for hobbies and antics. The great room has vaulted ceilings and a large footprint, which Addie says makes it just the right spot for the kids to play basketball, practice gymnastics, and more. Addie’s favorite part of the room is the first thing you see as you enter: the fireplace. “I love a wood burning fireplace,” she said. “I cut down wood in the forest and stack it through the summer. The wood burning fireplace in the winter is where we go all the time and hunker in.” Because of the fireplace and the other activities in the space, the great room is one of the family’s favorite spots in the house.
“
When people ask what happened to me during COVID, I tell them COVID got me with fainting goats. We just like to have baby goats because it’s fun to have babies. I donate them to schools for 4H, or I sell them. They’re awesome weed control. I love it.”

“My other favorite place in the house is probably my bedroom. It’s my sanctuary,” said Addie. “I put all the things that mean a lot to me in that room. I love sentimental stuff.” Around the house, she has artwork from her children framed and a large wall full of various photos of key moments in the family members' lives. “My bedroom has the best view of the land,” said Addie. “Sometimes when I work from home, I’ll sit in my bed and work because I can look out the window and see my horses.” Addie built a spot to read—a net suspended above her bed.

Outside, Stella and her mother love to ride around on their horses, Skip and Reba. “Poppy is our safe horse for friends to ride with us,” Addie said about her third horse. Her sons also have their fair share of fun around the property too. In the winter, they build a terrain park for skiing and snowboarding. “Every year, the winter terrain park has gotten bigger. We’ll use hay bales or those spools. My son, Luke, has built rails,” said Addie. “There’s a little playhouse down there they can use as a warming house. Now they want a chairlift, and I’ll figure out a pulley system for that before winter.” Last summer, they set up a shallow pool for wakeboarding. Now that spot has their large above-ground swimming pool. The oldest in the house, Peter, enjoys trapshooting off of the back patio, practicing with clay pigeons.

Overlooking the pond, Addie built a patio where the family loves to spend time at any time of day but especially as the sun sinks below the horizon. As night approaches, rays of sun cast hues of pinks, oranges, and reds across the land. “We put a firepit up there so we can watch the sunset,” said Addie. “It’s beautiful as it sets back over the back pond and pasture.”

In the morning, Addie does her best to make time to read, and she loves to do that right out on her front patio, where the sunrise is just as beautiful. Though her kids like to tease her, Addie says she enjoys watching birds perch near her garden while she reads—and she knows the kids secretly do, too. No matter the season, the family is always moving, making their hobbies and dreams come to life all in their own yard.

Megan Klinkefus meet the creative
written by Dawn Geertsema & photos by Emily Swan On a bustling corner of downtown Brookings sits the bright and modern b.beautiful Hair Lounge. “There is so much negativity and pressure in the world that I really wanted to bring a place to help men, women, and kids feel comfortable to express themselves and feel like their best self,” said owner Megan Klinkefus.
For the last 16 years, Klinkefus has worked as a stylist. Last year, she found another outlet for her knowledge. “RO+MO company was started in August 2021 with a goal in mind to offer the most effective, quality hot tools at an affordable price,” said Klinkefus. “My clients wanted something they could trust would last a long time; be effective as well as good for their hair health.” The b.beautiful stylist shares more about her life and businesses.

“b.beautiful Hair Lounge is a single-chair hair lounge in downtown Brookings providing women, men, and children with haircuts, colors, styling, waxing, and at-home products.” Megan Klinkefus
My favorite ways to spend my leisure time are…
hanging out with my two boys, teaching fitness classes at b.well company, doing anything outside in the summer, cheering on the Jacksrabbits [South Dakota State University] men's basketball team, and spending time with my family and friends.
Some of my favorite projects have been…
dreaming, creating, and watching RO+MO company come to life. Learning and growing from a branding standpoint has been incredible. Hiring an assistant three years ago changed everything for me.
Customers come to the website… predominantly to make an appointment, as well as buy hair products. Hot tools have been huge for online orders. Having an online shop has made it so easy for anyone to purchase products.
I couldn’t do this without…
my family. I opened my first salon when I was 25 years old, so my parents [and siblings] played a huge role in getting my dreams started. My husband Rob supports anything and everything I dream up. My assistant Georgialee, who runs my social media, was a huge part of getting RO+MO company off the ground and into the hands of my friends and clients. I definitely wouldn’t be here without my incredible clients and friends that have been alongside me for years.

Greg Koch written by Dawn Geertsema & photos by Emily Swan “605 Running Company is the number one source for all things running in South Dakota,” said co-owner Greg Koch. “We are a full-service outfitter, provide race event management, and have a robust private coaching program.” Located in downtown Sioux Falls, the shop works to make sure everyone who walks through the door feels comfortable and confident in the store and with their purchases. “We truly believe that the running community is for everyone,” said Koch. “We take the time to listen to your needs, ask the right questions, and use a full complement of tools designed to make your running experience great.”
5 Questions with Koch How does running fit into your lifestyle? My lifestyle can be pretty hectic at times. Owning two businesses, raising a 3 year old, and training gets pretty complicated. Running allows me to center myself. It keeps me calm, fit, and attentive to the things that matter the most to me. What's your best piece of advice for someone who wants to get into running? Don't worry about what other people think of you or what your average pace is. Just stick with it and run. I promise that the rewards are worth it, and you will never regret going on a run. How long have you been running? I’ve been running for 15 years. I got serious about running while I was in college. As somebody that has been described as “hyper-competitive,” I needed something that I could work on and compete with myself. Setting goals and training towards something really helps keep me grounded and calm. What are some must-have items when you're on a run? I own a lot of pairs of shoes. Typically I rotate between three to four pairs of shoes during a training cycle. Getting outside year round is pretty important to me as well, so my wardrobe is very complex depending on the season. To be successful, you’ve got to have the right shoes and clothes. When you aren't working or running, you'd likely be found where? You can usually find me with my wife and daughter around town at the Great Plains Zoo, Butterfly House & Aquarium, Washington Pavilion, or a state park.
