“The software that I use gives me the freedom to work from anywhere, in real time, within a shared model. Maybe I’ll be ” doing finish plans from a space hotel someday. Who knows?

-Erica Locke

When I walk around downtown, one of my favorite places to stop by is… CH Patisserie. I

have a sweet tooth, and I enjoy the atmosphere.

Someone local who I admire

is… Jeff Hazard. I did a job shadow at Koch Hazard Architects when I was 18, and I knew in my gut I was going to work there someday. Although I was only there for three years, I am forever grateful for the opportunity and the invaluable learning experiences. His work lives on for generations within our region, and I only wish I would have told him the impact he made on my life and career as a designer.

In Fate’s Hands

Spontaneously Fermented Sour

In Fate’s Hands is a blend of two-year-old spontaneously fermented ale. It’s sour and funky with notes of pineapple, mango, and citrus.

With a 5.2% ABV, this fan-favorite variant is loaded with blackberries, blueberries, and cherries. Find it on tap at Fernson Downtown or in cans.

This fourth edition of Porosha is bold, rich, and smooth with chocolate and toffee notes.

The use of local Michigan Copper and Strata hops provide a pineapple hop characteristic that balances with a medium-bodied, slightly sweet malt characteristic.

The malty backbone of Chinook Daze supports a hop aroma and flavor reminiscent of spices and pine.

In this cider, sweet apple characteristics on the nose and palate are balanced by a tart pomegranate note and a hint of jasmine.

For their 200th batch of beer, Look’s Beer Co. doubled the dry hops in their flagship IPA. In the result, citrus and resinous notes abound.

“Every year has surprises, but 2021 didn’t deliver anything too crazy,” said Lee Eddy, co-owner of Sawyer Brewing Co. “Spearfish saw a busy summer of travelers and tourism, so we were excited to capitalize on that.”

The remote location of the brewery has brought a lot of traffic since 2020.

“It seems everyone is escaping to the ‘wide open spaces’ since the pandemic,” said Ali Eddy, co-owner. “The Black Hills have seen an influx in vacationers, but also new residents, which in turn helps us to grow our customer base.” “Customers have requested our beer in all of the surrounding states, but we are sticking close to home for the time being,” said Ali.

And close to home, they offer a cozy spot to enjoy their menu.

“Our taproom has tons of wood and natural accents with warm lights—it makes people feel comfortable and hunker down to enjoy some craft beers and great conversation,” said Ali. “People comment on our design all of the time, and really dig the fact that we completed the build-out ourselves.”

The atmosphere at Sawyer nurtures a calm hang out spot and focuses on human interaction rather than sports or other standard taproom features. “You won’t find any TVs in our taproom, and we’ve received many, many compliments on this decision,” said Ali.

Customers, new and otherwise, can pick from various craft beers on tap at the raw-edge wood bar top and a slew of signature wood-fired pizzas.

Pizzas include specialties like Mediterranean, Prosciutto & Arugula, and Popper, along with a few more traditional options.+

“We started Side Hustle Moto to combine our love for all things motorcycle and high quality goods and design,” said co-owner Shawna Prugh, co-owner of Side Hustle Moto and Prugh Design.

Shawna and her husband Michael opened the shop in Rapid City for the first time in December of 2019. Due to the pandemic, they had to close their doors again after only a few months. The Black Hills motorcycle store reopened again in June 2020.

“It’s a passion project for both of us, and it’s not just for motorcycle enthusiasts,” said Shawna. “We have something for everyone.”

The Prughs sell many of their own products in their storefront. Items their brands carry include everything from apparel and stickers to coffee and mugs.

“Good design comes in all shapes and sizes,” said Shawna.

Side Hustle Moto also carries various products like Gringo helmets, Howard Soap Co. candles and creams, and scratch-made snacks from Fireside S’mores. Shawna and Michael share how they spend their time outside of the shop.
