It's time for T he 605 Best awards!

Our team is lucky to visit so many statewide attractions for our job. This particular issue makes me feel even luckier, because I got to have two experiences for articles with my son, Owen WaTiki Indoor Waterpark Resort hosted the Snyder trio in Rapid City, where we all burned energy going down all of the slides (with a little relaxing in the Lazy River).

In December 2021 we also got to hop on board the 1880 Train Holiday Express in Hill City, where Christmas came alive. Check out the full stories in this issue, along with other 605 Best winners.

I may be biased, but my beloved mutt looks dashing in his new bandana.

Olde Towne Dinner Theatre

Olde Towne Dinner Theatre is in its 40th anniversary season "celebrating the art and joy of community theater" in Worthing.

“Olde Towne is special for a number of reasons,” said artistic director John Boe. “First of all, the food can't be beat.”

Audience members get a four-course, restaurant quality meal served to the table by volunteers during the show. Volunteers are always needed on and off the stage. Individuals, couples, families, and groups are welcome.

“We get so many talented actors down here. The shows are always enjoyable,” said Boe. “But what makes this place so special is a feeling.”

Boe remembers his first play he attended and says he immediately wanted to get involved.

“This place has always felt like a family. Everyone involved does it for the love of theater and Olde Towne,” he continued. “That's why volunteers and patrons keep coming back.”

Tickets can be purchased per show or as season tickets.

“Season tickets are $180 a piece,” said Boe. “There are two big benefits here: First you end up saving about $10 per show, and second you can make your reservations any time.”

Non-season tickets go on sale three weeks before opening night. Regular tickets have a few tiers from $50-$60 depending on seating

The current show is 2 Across, which is about two male and female strangers who board a San Francicsco BART train at 4:30 a.m.

“They're alone in the car, each is married, both are doing The New York Times crossword,” said Boe. “She's an organized, sensible psychologist. He's a free-spirited, unemployed ad exec.”

2 Across runs December 1-4, 8-11, 15-18, and 29-31 and also runs January 1 and 5-8. Other shows include Leading Ladies in February and March, and The Movie Game in May and June.

“I've been involved at Olde Towne for over 15 years,” said Boe. “I love this place, and I love that we are building momentum for the future.”

Rachel Gage & Tracy Kirby Isn't it lovely Best Podcast

For times like these, a podcast was created by Rachel Gage and Tracy Kirby to look for “the lovely” in things. Isn’t it Lovely? formulated 10 years ago when Gage and Kirby first met and say their sister-like bond started.

“We met at a local sandwich shop after Tracy had just moved to Sioux Falls,” recalled Gage. “When we met, it was like our souls recognized one another and we immediately knew we would not only be dear friends, but that we would work together one day.”

Both South Dakota transplants, the pair says they bonded and found comfort in their friendship. Years later, when Gage says it seemed like most media was “bleak and rife with discord,” they pondered what it would be like to capture inspiring conversations they were already having in coffee shops with other people, and to share those conversations with the public to encourage and inspire.

The duo merged Kirby’s journalism background and Gage’s ability to encourage to launch the podcast that is now in its seventh season.

“Doing this as partners is an absolute dream,” said Kirby. “It’s incredible to have a teammate to lean on, from the workload and goals set to lessons learned and celebrations. Being able to lift each other up and speak into one another’s strengths and believe in each other is so powerful.”

Topics have included anything from surviving addiction to living a life of service. Most recently Gage and Kirby had a sitdown interview with South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem

“We feel so fortunate to have had the privilege of interviewing a really broad spectrum of guests and are so excited to continue to

represent a variety of different stories and voices in the months and years to come,” said Gage.

The co-hosts say it’s fun to look how the show has evolved over the years, and one big change happening soon will be interviewing guests outside of South Dakota as well.

“We are thrilled to be expanding our roster to include incredible guests outside of the 605, while also continuing to showcase amazing people and stories in the state of South Dakota and have some great surprises in store,” said Kirby.

As creatives themselves, Gage and Kirby say the local creative community has been very welcoming and supportive throughout their journey.

“We have fallen in love with the unbelievably supportive community of entrepreneurs and creatives in the area and are overwhelmed by the generosity and encouragement we have received,” said Gage. “It can be terrifying to enter the creative arena, but when you’re met with others that simply cheer you on, it helps you dream even bigger.”

Miner Brewing Co. Igloos & Prairie Berry Winery Igloos

Order a pint, grab a blanket, and take a seat inside the outdoor igloos at Miner Brewing Company in Hill City. Enjoy two hours or more in a private igloo surrounded by winter in the Black Hills.

“Our igloos are clear, so you can enjoy the beauty that surrounds you, while being able to intimately enjoy the company of your guests,” said brand and marketing manager Shanna Hockert

Each of the seven igloos are equipped with adjustable space heaters for comfort, though Miner Brewing Company does recommend guests dress for the weather and can bring a blanket if they desire. Igloos are available November through mid March each year and are reservation only. Weekday pricing (Monday through Thursday) is $25, and weekend pricing (Friday through Sunday) is $35.

Board games and bluetooth speakers are available to check out at the taproom, and guests can order food and wine from Prairie Berry Winery next door. Hockert notes that there isn’t table service at the igloos, and menu items must be picked up at the brewery or winery.

“We encourage our guests who wish to order food to enjoy during their igloo reservation to do so when they check in at Miner,” said Hockert. “Our food is all house-made at the Prairie Berry kitchen next door. We also have a variety of snacks at the Miner taproom.”

Each igloo is lit, so guests can experience them at night as well. Igloos are intended to seat six adults, and children are welcome.

Dogs are welcome on the lawn, but not inside the igloos.

Hockert says the igloos have been used for many types of experiences.

“We've had all types of gatherings take place in our igloos, from team building, friends enjoying the afternoon, family get-togethers, and we've even had a few wedding proposals take place over the last couple years,” she said. “You may rent as many igloos or time slots as you would like.”

Something that is new this year is full-day reservations during weekday hours.

“Come when it’s convenient for your group,” said Hockert.

This winter, Miner Brewing Company will be hosting its annual Black Hills Winter Festival, which is a weekend of outdoor events and activities. Dates and details will be announced in the near future. There will also be other heated tents on location to continue “patio season.”

This unique opportunity has been created to still appreciate the outdoors in the winter with close friends, family, and acquaintances.

“This allows us to have two beaches, two volleyball courts, a basketball court, bocce ball courts, an outdoor pool, and a playground without feeling cramped,” said owner and operator Mike Grave

The resort along the Missouri River has something to do for everyone, including 20 miles of bike and walking trails, a marina, and spots to simply be in the moment.

“Now with a coffee bar on site, you can get your morning latte and relax in an Adirondack chair overlooking the water,” said Grave.

There is also a variety of lodging options, including campsites, motel rooms, twobedroom cabins, three-bedroom cabins, four-bedroom cottages, and The Lodge. The Lodge sleeps up to 28 people and is a 4,000 square foot building designed to specialize in family reunions, weddings, corporate retreats, or family vacations.

“The Lodge has an amazing view with great space to accommodate tents and any outdoor types of events, and the interior can seat to 100 people,” said Grave.

Two of the 3,000 square foot cottages are new and were built last winter. Both have four bedrooms and three bathrooms that sleep up to 20.

between cabins that sleep 10 and the lodge that sleeps 28,” said Grave.

Along with a 1,300 square foot great room that has a double kitchen, the cottages have a 60x20 patio that overlooks the lake with fire pits, a gas grill, and picnic tables. Grave says the best feature of the new cottages is the view.

“The sunrise over the dam and the sunsets on the water making the bluffs glow are just breathtaking and never get old,” said Grave. Each cottage has its own theme. One is Dakota themed and is called the Buffalo Cottage, which was inspired by the large buffalo in the great room. The Beach Cottage is nicknamed the “ Kayak Cottage,” as it has a handmade kayak from a local woodworker in town as its main display piece.

Lewis & Clark Resort also recently added six full hookup campsites to accommodate a family reunion. The Resort will take reservations up to five calendar years out allowing for big groups to plan ahead, but it can also take last minute stays with the new expansion.

When it comes to lodging, Grave says there’s nothing like being surrounded by the outdoors.

“When your door opens out to the grass and lake, it changes the whole lodging experience,” said Grave. “Sitting at a campfire at night instead of sitting on your bed watching TV is something that creates memories.”

Experience magic this holiday season with the 1880 Train’s Holiday Express. This Christmas-themed journey transports passengers from Hill City to the "North Pole "

“The book tells the story of a young boy and his grandfather who enjoy a Christmas evening of magic, Santa Claus, and the 1880 Train,” said Nate Anderson, business operations manager.

Anderson adds that "Marlon McDoogle’s Magical Night" is available as an add-on purchase with tickets or in 1880 Train’s gift shop. Guests who have purchased the physical copy will have a sense of familiarity while riding the Holiday Express.

“Many of the train personalities in the book are based on our actual conductors and engineers who work with us,” said Anderson. “Children will be able to recognize their likenesses while riding the Holiday Express.”

Upon arriving at the North Pole, passengers will see a series of illuminated and colorfully-painted buildings that line Santa's Village. Santa waves to the guests outside of his workshop, creating a special moment for guests and staff.

“It is something special when all of the kids holler and shout when they see the ‘Big Man’ waiting for us there,” said Anderson.

Santa joins Mrs. Claus and his elves on the train back to greet children and families while taking photos along the way. As the journey comes to an end, children are gifted a candy cane and a small silver jingle bell.

The Spiked Ride is an option for passengers 21 and up looking for jovial fun and has been popular for holiday parties.

In an 1880 Train keepsake mug, passengers can choose from Peppermint or Butterscotch Schnapps-spiked hot chocolate. Spiked guests will be able to enjoy everything received in the traditional Holiday Express ride, including a visit from Santa Claus.

Anderson shares that the Holiday Express creates a one-of-a-kind experience for guests.

“The trains are pretty packed, and everyone is dressed up in their festive sweaters and jammies,” said Anderson. “It’s more of a party atmosphere compared to our summertime rides.”

The 1880 Train offers more than holiday joy with various specialthemed train rides offered all year round. From June to October, visitors can experience special events like the Old West Shootout , Wine Express, and Oktoberfest Express

The Old West Shootout operates every Sunday afternoon from midJune to Labor Day. During this ride, passengers are in the midst of a faux shootout performed by a local reenactment group. Passengers watch as thieves hide precious treasure and are stopped by cowboys, saving the day.

The Wine Express operates during the first full weekend of

September. The two-hour ride allows passengers to indulge in local wines, paired with a variety of meals including Charcuterie Boxes, Chicken Salad Sandwiches, and Carrot Cake

The Oktoberfest Express operates the last weekend of September or the first weekend of October. In 2023, the Oktoberfest Express will take place on September 30.

On board, guests are served a Bratwurst with an assortment of toppings, like sauerkraut and grilled onions. This is all paired with local German Potato Salad , a Bavarian-themed dessert, and a sampling of three beers.

The 1880 Train’s most popular ride, however, is the traditional train ride that is offered from May through October. With round trip and one-way departure trips available from Hill City and Keystone, passengers will learn about the history of the Black Hills, railroads, and mines.

Following the hour ride, passengers have the option to have a quick turnaround time of 15 minutes or stay for a few hours of adventure. Guests who decide to stay have the opportunity to sightsee and peruse local shops and restaurants. Anderson says this option is very popular for families.

“We have families that will take the first train to Keystone and spend their entire day there until the last train out,” said Anderson.

With both depots located in the heart of their respected downtown district, Anderson says they encourage the exploration of local businesses.

No matter the ride, the 1880 Train is a must for children and adults alike to see the Black Hills from a different perspective.

“A lot of kids and adults have never been on a train ride before,” said Anderson. “There’s a lot of excitement behind riding a train and hearing the diesel and whistle. It’s just a unique experience.”

Butterfly House & Aquarium

Check out the Butterfly House & Aquarium in Sioux Falls to go “above, below, and beyond.” For years, the conservatory has introduced guests to learn and experience aquarium and butterfly habitats.

“Our mission is to inspire conservation of the vital building blocks of sea, sky, and land,” said Ky Uthe, marketing and development specialist.

Uthe expresses his hope that guests walk away with a deeper understanding of species that are not always at the forefront of conservation efforts.

“We hope guests walk away with an emotional connection to these animals,” said Uthe.

Michelle Coley, director of animal husbandry, brought the 605 team back for a behind-the-scenes look at what keeps the Butterfly House & Aquarium going strong.

Coley brought us back to see the process and preparation of brine shrimp for their small aquatic animals.

“We take brine shrimp eggs, prep them by hydrating them in water, and set them in a cone overnight with aeration and heat to hatch,” said Coley.

Smith assisted with preparing brine shrimp for feeding and separating brine shrimp eggs into brine cones.

Coley explained that the process for the brine cone takes longer than one would expect.

“The process takes about an hour to complete,” said Coley. “There’s a magnetic coating covering the egg case, so when the brine shrimp hatch out, we make sure there are no egg casings mixed in with the shrimp.”

Coley adds that jellyfish could face serious harm if the magnetic casings are consumed.

“If they eat the eggs, they could end up developing holes in their digestive cavity and end up dying,” explained Coley.

After separation, the shrimp are ready to be distributed to their jellyfish and seahorses.

Discover Custer State Park

Next, the four of us were introduced to aquarist Shannon Kendrick on a deep dive into their coral tank.

Standing above the tank, we were guided through the process of Kendrick introducing new coral into an existing environment. Coley explains that this is not a simple task.

“We have to measure the amount of light going into our tank and match it to the amount of light the coral has been existing in previously,” said Coley.

This light is measured in Photosynthetically Active Radiation [ PAR]. If that measurement is higher or lower than 50, the coral will stress and begin to bleach itself.

Coley adds that the imbalance of light will affect the way coral produce their food, resulting in death.

“This is one of the big reasons why coral reefs are suffering in the wild,” said Coley. “There’s too much shading in the ocean due to pollution and coral being covered in sunscreen.”

Kendrick suited up with her goggles and dove down with a PAR reader, while Patterson stood above to read each location's average number.

Once Kendrick found the right spot for their new corals, it was time to introduce them to the new environment. When asked to hand Kendrick the new corals, it was a no-brainer for Patterson and Smith.

“We want to make sure that our environments are protected, especially with the animals we keep, because they are sensitive to changes.”

When adding new specimens to the tanks, Kendrick says the staff are careful to research their food and predators.

“The main focus of this tank is the life of the coral, so our team is always cautious,” said Kendrick.

Our next stop was the butterfly conservatory. After being greeted by tropical weather and a lesson on the trimming of the Fiddle Leaf Tree, we were eager to explore.

We were surprised to learn that the butterflies are accompanied by some helpful friends. Button Quail are scattered throughout the dirt floor of the butterfly house.

“The button quail are here to help remove pests that we don’t want in our conservatory,” said Coley.

While they are an important aspect of removing the pests from plants and dirt, guests get the added bonus of looking at the birds.

The Butterfly House recently introduced a world map to show visitors where their butterflies have come from. This new educational resource adds a unique aspect to the conservatory.

“It’s an invaluable piece to let people see that we get butterflies from Africa, South America, Costa Rica, and Ecuador,” said Coley.

What visitors do not often get to see is the tedious work of their multiple fragile butterfly shipments.

“We typically have 800 butterflies in our conservatory at all times,” said Coley.

New butterflies are shipped and delivered in chrysalis form and it is the staff's responsibility to pin the chrysalises in preparation for them to hatch.

Sutton, Smith, and I helped pin butterfly chrysalises in preparation for their move to a humidity box. To prevent the butterflies from harming one another as they emerge, we had to pin them with plenty of space between them.

As our tour was coming to a close, we had an exclusive look at their new baby ShortTailed Nurse Sharks

Their goal is to train the sharks comfortable with visitors touching and interacting with them. Coley assured us the sharks were comfortable and we were allowed to do a one-finger touch.

Our behind-the-scenes experience was truly eye-opening. We had a first-hand look into how passionate the staff is about their jobs and what they do on a daily basis.

“It was a new take on an educational experience,” said Sutton. “We were able to experience something that their guests don’t get to.”

Black Hills Playhouse

For nearly 80 years, Custer State Park has been home to a wide range of shows at The Black Hills Playhouse. The theater has really grown—and in more aspects than one.

While many may habitually come to the theater house annually to celebrate anniversaries or just as an enthusiast of musicals and plays, the Black Hills Playhouse does more than just theater in Custer State Park.

Linda Anderson, executive director, said, “The Black Hills Playhouse is a regional theater dedicated to delivering exceptional performances and spreading theatrical education to strengthen South Dakota communities.”

In addition to their creative and interesting showbill, the BHP family of programs provides several opportunities throughout the year that engage a diverse audience statewide. Dakota Players Tours takes educational programs to communities of all sizes across the state.

“Going on 23 years now, the touring group travels up to 40 locations to bring theater education opportunities to small communities that don’t often have the pleasure to interact with professional theatre artists,” explained Anderson.

As they travel, the program primarily works with children, kindergarten through eighth grade. Another youth program that the theater runs includes BHP Jr. Camps. These performing arts camps work with older youth from 5th-12th grade. Additionally, working with both youth and adults, the Playhouse employs professional artists to conduct The Expanding Stage program.

Anderson said, “The Expanding Stage program collaborates with those who have disabilities. We offer classes that either lead to participants performing for friends and family or attending a theater performance in the community.”

Over the past 11 years, the BHP campus has grown into something outstanding. It’s like no other theater operation in South Dakota and is easily one of the largest performing arts organizations in the region.

Outside of their program and outreach work, the BHP has seen quite a few costume changes and makeovers itself through the years.

Anderson shared, “We started attracting audiences to a tent out by Legion Lake in the park, moved to the current theater we use in 1956, and since 2007 now have newly renovated buildings, housing for our professionals, shops for set, props, and costume design, and more.”

Glimpse through A Different Lens this 2023 season and join the BHP for some incredible shows. Geared toward a more mature audience, the line-up for shows this year is exciting and thought provoking.

While you can get a full read-out of the shows online, Anderson shared a few highlights to look forward to this season.

“The first two shows will be concurrent, so guests can see them in the same weekend,” said Anderson. “Take the time between shows and enjoy the nature that the park has to offer, a picnic outside the theater, and then come back and watch our professionals put on a spectacular show.”

After years of enduring weather and general damages, associate director of the BHP campus Randy Niles said the theater’s campus has received a facelift through a series of improvement to its buildings that started in 2011. Over the course of fall 2021 and spring 2022, the grounds have received numerous updates.

“When the Warren M. Lee Theatre was built, it was intended as a oneseason-only structure,” said Niles. “Now we have a weather-proof envelope which is energy efficient."

The second oldest building on campus, the theater experienced a hefty renovation from siding to insulation to air conditioning backstage. The updates that have been made benefit both the professionals performing and the audience that comes to watch the show.

In the most recent practical update to the grounds, Anderson says a dedicated committee of volunteers and staff worked on prolonging the life of each building.

Niles says they had a total of 19 buildings reroofed with the help of All American Siding, Windows & USA Roofing from the oldest remaining building—the Snack Bar—to the scene shop, costume shop, rehearsal hall, and more. According to Anderson, the road to the BHP was also rebuilt and repaved. And now, the shows must go on in 2023.

Stacie Suedkamp, owner of Fig Tales in Flandreau, has always been the baker of her family. But after a failed experience with cake pops, she decided to turn her direction to baking sugar cookies.

Her array of sugar cookies caught the attention of her coworkers, who turned into her first customers.

“I had two amazing coworkers who were incredibly encouraging,” said Suedkamp. “They said, ‘You really have something here,’ and asked me to bake them custom cookies of their own.”

After pursuing a variety of careers and fulfilling cookie orders on the side, Suedkamp says that she was ready to make the leap toward owning her own business.

“I reached a point where if I was going to try and make a living as a baker, it was either now or never,” said Suedkamp.

Through Fig Tales, Suedkamp has been able to create custom-designed sugar cookies for businesses and customers around the world.

“It has been seven years and I haven’t looked back,” said Suedkamp.

Suedkamp opens up more about her love for baking, design, and creative freedom.

At WaTiki Indoor Waterpark Resort in Rapid City, you can celebrate summer all year long with over 30,000 square feet of swimming pools and waterslides. The facility is open 365 days a year and is always a balmy 84 degrees.

“In essence, it's a large—for lack of a better term—atrium. All of the windows allow all of the natural light from outside,” said WaTiki general manager Lauren Ebert . “Even on a gloomy day, it's going to seem nice and bright and beautiful inside the park and capture a lot of that solar energy available to us to in order to keep the space nice and warm.”

The waterpark, which is on North Elk Vale Road off of I-90, includes three giant waterslides that require the use of tubes (with the exception of the Seahorse Slide), and all connect to the Lazy River. Koko Kingdom is an area where kids can play, climb, shoot water, and slide down three mini slides. The Kingdom has a Big Bucket of water that dumps every 8-10 minutes, and one of the mini slides goes through the bar at Sliders Bar & Grill, which is a full service bar and restaurant in the facility.

“The name Sliders plays off WaTiki’s surfer vibes and has bar food, pizzas, sliders, salads, and hot wings— things of that nature,” said Angela Avila , director of sales and marketing for WaTiki and The Box Elder Events Center. “The waterpark itself is for the kids and Sliders are for the parents, but serve kids food as well. Parents can enjoy their time while the kids are enjoying their time.”

Food can be served directly to the guest’s table inside the waterpark as well, making it easier to jump in and

out of the water while grabbing a bite or beverage. Another way to relax is to slip into the Oasis Hot Tub.

For more action-packed activities, guests can go into the Activity Pool with water cannons, lily pads, and basketball rings. Tiki Towels are available for purchase or guests can bring their own. WaTiki also provides lifejackets in the lifejacket bin for those who need them, and locker rooms and changing rooms are also available.

“WaTiki is connected to four of our properties: Fairfield by Marriott , La Quinta by Wyndam, Home2 Suites by Hilton, and Residence Inn & Suites The Courtyard by Marriott is a short walk away and will be connected to The Box Elder Events Center.”

The Box Elder Events Center, otherwise known as “ The Box ,” will be a private public partnership between the city of Box Elder and Liv Hospitality in Rapid City and is anticipated to open May of 2023.

“Our primary focus is bringing youth sporting events to the area and having another event space the entire Black Hills community can use,” said Avila.

While The Box is a new addition to the campus, WaTiki has been in operation for 16 years. Though the largest waterpark in the Midwest has been around for over a decade, the facility looks like new due to recent renovations.

“We resurfaced all of our pools, resurfaced all of the flooring, and slides were sanded down and resurfaced as well,” said WaTiki assistant general manager Joshua Ries

The entire facility also made experiential upgrades, like a chipped wristband system that can be used for things like day-of waterpark entry, locker rentals, and to load up Tiki Cash.

“We can load up what we call Tiki Cash, which is good for Sliders. The WaTiki cash system also allows for you to come up and purchase a drink from the marketplace upstairs in Koko’s Arcade and load arcade credits onto it,” said Ebert.

Koko’s Arcade is attached to the waterpark and has over 50 classic and modern arcade games, along with prizes to collect with tickets.

“It's nice to be able to load up the kids with 5 or 10 dollars on their wristband and then when they get thirsty you just send them upstairs and be like, ‘Hey, go right on ahead,’” said Ebert.

Ries added, “Our main thing with the renovation is that we wanted to offer something more than just fresh paint. We are offering our guests a new experience.”

WaTiki can also host a wide range of private events, like birthday parties, family reunions, and holiday gatherings. Each event package is custom designed.

“We also do something called Keys to WaTiki, where for a reasonable fee you can rent out the entire facility. This is great for company corporate parties, a giant family reunion, weddings, parties, or anything of that nature,” said Avila. “Then we obviously do smaller private birthday parties during open hours.”

When it comes to naming her favorite thing about WaTiki, Ebert says it’s tough to nail down.

“I think in general we are super special because we offer a lot of amenities for people who are traveling here from all over the world,” said Ebert. “And for locals, we’re here year round and offer them the opportunity to come in on the awful winter days where it’s negative 20 outside to what I like to refer to as a tropical paradise right here in the middle of South Dakota.”

Ten years ago, Shaley Bolks successfully lost 160 pounds. Ever since then, she’s been on a mission to help others to eat and live well, physically and spiritually.

In 2018, Bolks opened Daily Clean Food & Drink, a restaurant that focuses on organic, clean, and made-fromscratch foods.

The Sioux Falls eatery was born from Bolks’ frustration with the bland and processed diet food that she was consuming on her weight-loss journey. Bolks found that these low calorie foods weren’t healthy, and made dietary changes by using whole food ingredients in her cooking at home.

Bolks also became a fitness instructor at Form Fitness, where she would meet her future business partner, Steve Gratzfeld. Together, they brainstormed a business for the changing landscape in town.

“We put our heads together, and I came up with a whole bunch of really awesome menu items and things that I thought Sioux Falls was missing,” recalled Bolks. “I wanted something that wasn't 'open up a bag and dump it in the fryer.'”

Despite her passion for healthy eating and cooking, Bolks had no prior experience in the field before starting the business.

“I had zero experience in the food service industry aside from working at B & G Milkyway,” she said with a laugh.

Before Daily, she’d been running a legal processing business out of her family’s home.

When Daily opened in November of 2018, Bolks said they got a bit of a bad rap for carrying strictly healthy food.

“It’s not just salads and low calorie diet food,” she said. “We’re focusing on food for every diet.”

Daily’s menu carries dairy free, gluten free, plant based, and allergen sensitive dishes. In the words of Guy Fieri, “This is the restaurant for everyone and their gluten-free grandma.”

Fieri stated this when Daily was featured on the hit TV show Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives in February of 2021.

When asked what being on the show was like, Bolks got goosebumps.

“I was jumping up and down just to be considered,” she reflected.

Menu items range from vegan burgers, scratch-made pizzas, acai bowls, toasts, salads, smoothies, and specialty drinks and teas. Seasonal items are also popular at Daily. Baked goods, smoothies, and bowls are reimagined every few months, and local ingredients are utilized whenever possible.

Bolks says the culture behind the counter is just as unique as the options on the menu. She notes that Daily is a very tight-knit community that promotes a culture of learning, growing, and healing.

Inspired by visitors from all over the country, Bolks says she would like to expand the business into multiple locations. Customers often express a desire to see Daily made available nationwide.

“People have come in here and said, ‘I want a Daily in Florida, I want a Daily in Omaha, I want a Daily in Colorado,’” said Bolks.

“Colorado?” she laughed. “Don’t you have everything you need out there?”

Bolks also notes that she receives an influx of emails and calls whenever her episode airs, asking for her recipes and weight-loss advice. The supportive response has been an inspiration, and she hopes to write her own cookbook in the future.

When asked what advice she’d give to her past self, Bolks’ response is simple: “The universe will keep you on the right path. Go towards the light.”

“ Shop Dog Boutique is all about providing only the best in the best industry,” said owner Ellyn Montag.

Built from the ground up, Montag says that her shop offers guidance on nutrition, play, and exercise to ensure each dog lives a happy and healthy life.

As a student at the University of Montana, she worked for a locally-owned pet boutique during which she developed a love for pet nutrition.

“I loved the super friendly and happy dog-loving customers,” said Montag. “I loved learning about pet nutrition and U.S.-made pet goods.”

Upon her return to Sioux Falls, Montag adopted her Labradoodle from the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society

Having only the best in mind for her new rescue, she immediately sought out the natural food lines and treats the Montana pet boutique stocked.

Montag soon realized the area lacked options, and says she decided to do something about it and bring it to the community.

“After traveling to Omaha and Minneapolis to research what other pet retailers were doing right in the Midwest, attending trade shows, and meeting with industry representatives, I found the perfect location in southern Sioux Falls,” said Montag.

When my toddler doesn’t want to take a nap, we often go for “nap drives” because our truck puts him right to sleep. Our favorite drive is down by Newton Hills State Park and into Iowa. It’s absolutely gorgeous in the fall.

My parents own a little farmground south of Sioux Falls with a beautiful old tree line on it. During the fall, you can find us sitting in a blind looking for white tail deer.

At the age of 23, Ben Hanten knew he wanted to own his own business. With an old building suddenly available in downtown Yankton, he began dreaming of what could be placed there.

“I dreamt up a bar that was like nothing else in the area,” said Hanten.

Hanten opened his first bar in 2005, previously known as The Hugh Glass Bar, and it quickly established itself as one of the best bars in the region. Years later, he took his business in a new direction by becoming the brewery we know today, Ben’s Brewing Co

“We’re all about brewing great local beer and providing excellent hospitality spaces,” said Hanten.

Ben’s Brewing Co. has grown beyond its roots by being paired with its brewing headquarters, Ben’s Brew Station. Home to a large taproom containing 28 tap beers, Hanten says he wants to continue to make this location a top tourist destination in the region.

How do you choose which styles of beer to brew?

I have no business partners, so virtually all of our growth is funded by sales at our taprooms. That means keeping a large variety of beer to suit everyone's taste.

What’s the best part about your job?

Any updates we should know about?

We started brewing in our new brewhouse that tripled our capacity, and we also just opened up an additional 2,500 square feet at the Brew Station to the public for a bigger game room.

What’s your favorite part about living in South Dakota?
