Over the next 16 years, Simply Perfect thrived at times, struggled at others, and expanded when the time was right. “It has become a lifestyle store where we offer a complete experience for our customers in the variety of businesses we offer,” she said. Plum’s Cooking Co. has been around for nearly 35 years, but six years ago, Klinedinst became the owner in an effort to keep the doors of the beloved shop from closing. “I believe that Plum’s completes our lifestyle experience through food and education. Our kitchen is the heart of our shop,” explained Klinedinst. When she took over, they quadrupled the kitchen’s footprint and began offering cooking classes more frequently—from three to four times a week. “We’re extremely proud to give a platform to our local chefs to share their talents and their love for food.”

Klinedinst tells about her newest addition to the Simply Perfect lineup, Simply Perfect Design Co., and shared a deeper look into how her companies enrich her life.

One of my favorite projects has been… renovating and restoring Plum’s. Plum’s is the best design work I’ve ever done. I really enjoyed creating a state-of-the-art culinary teaching kitchen for our cooking school. And knowing that this had been the dream of the previous owner, Caroline Peterson, made my work rewarding and something I take great pride in.

What people might not know about Simply Perfect is… I registered my business on my 40th birthday and opened our doors on the day my first grandchild, Aiden, was born. It took courage to be brave and change my career in my 40s. It has been a difficult journey, but well worth it.

Simply Perfect endured… a recession where I did not take a paycheck for seven years in order to pay my employees. We endured a pandemic [in which] we chose to remain open—although it was highly discouraging. For me, our team comes first. I never anticipated the toll it would take on my family's time and my time. However, the encouragement I’ve received has carried me through all these years. And as I look back, I can sincerely say I have no regrets.

Something we’re doing with our business right now that I’m excited about is… being part of a Downtown Sioux Falls visionary committee for 2025. Given the opportunity to have a voice in a group of professionals has been an honor.

As summer approaches, the Buglin’ Bull Restaurant & Sports Bar in Custer prepares to welcome back summer menu items for locals and tourists alike. “It’s centered around being a family type of place, and we’re extremely busy in the summertime with the tourism,” said WR Hospitality culinary director Farzad Farrokhi. “We have lots of burgers and sandwiches but also great entrées, and we bring in wild game meat.”

“The Chislic goes to a Tatanka Chislic, so we use buffalo sirloin instead of Angus sirloin,” said Farrokhi. The state appetizer staple is marinated in the house steak sauce and served with Parmesan-Garlic Fries. Another popular addition is the Buffalo Stuffed Mushrooms, which have spicy buffalo sausage, parmesan, and cream cheese. “We add a Pheasant Flatbread kalamata olives, banana peppers, arugula, tomato, pesto cream sauce, and pheasant confit,” said Farrokhi.

The seven-ounce salmon filet is served over a wild rice medley, with seasonal vegetables, and with toppings of a brown sugar rum glaze and pineapple salsa. That’s not the only place elk appears in the restaurant’s menu. “You can point and shoot and go to pretty much any restaurant in the area to get a buffalo burger in the summer,” said Farrokhi. “We’re one of the few places that prides ourselves on having a handpattied Elk Burger since the elk is in our name.” He adds that the flavor and texture make the dish just right. “The Elk Burger is second to none in flavor and texture. Our elk is ground at Prairie Harvest Specialty Foods in Spearfish, and they do a really nice job on the ratio,” said Farrokhi. To finish off a meal at the Buglin’ Bull, try one of the handful of desserts like the Cast Iron Cookie, Cheesecake, and Crème Brûlée, which is homemade with cream custard. Another option is the Chocolate Banana Swirl Cake made up of rich chocolate swirled with banana cake and topped with cream cheese frosting, caramel, and whipped cream.

Along with the new and mainstay menu items comes an old guest favorite: The Deck. After not being able to use The Deck for a couple years, the Buglin’ Bull is looking forward to summer in the sun. “There’s full bar service and tap beer, all overhanging the building to offer one of the best views of Custer,” said Farrokhi. “It’ll be more appetizer and sandwich driven up there.” But tourism season in or out, Farrokhi says the staff keeps it lively. He said, “We’ve got a fantastic staff here—staff that treats the place like they own it. We really take pride in what they're doing with guest service, quality of food, and atmosphere.”

Construction + Remodel After the team at Crew and the client agree on a drawn-up plan or remodel, which has to be done before any work can take place, Eberts says Crew has a commitment to offering the best quality experience possible. Depending on the size of the project, time periods vary. To prevent going over budget, any break from the approved plan will be run by the client to ensure Crew stays on track with what was discussed. Eberts and his wife Brandy’s new home is a product of Crew’s work. It’s a new construction build with modern style and finishes in Sioux Falls. For them, the build took roughly a year. “This house was built to entertain,” said Eberts. “We wanted an open space where people can mingle and enjoy themselves. It overlooks the city—the views are super cool at night.”

In their home, they tried a few new things including a driveway that stretches across the lot, offering two entrances from separate streets. They also sourced wood from old barns to add rustic beams to the soaring ceilings. “We’re willing to try new things and have fun with it,” said Eberts. Right now, their home has two bedrooms and two bathrooms on their 2,980-square-foot main level. The basement isn’t yet finished but has space for an additional three bedrooms and three bathrooms. Across the house, details were of the utmost importance for the couple from the finishes to heaters on the patio. “I can’t even tell you how many hours she spends picking out lights. It’s difficult,” explained Eberts. They also focus on functionality of the builds, as well as the must haves. “She wanted a main floor office. I wanted a woodburning fireplace. How the kitchen and the pantry area flowed was also of major importance,” he said. He added that a walk-in shower and closet were also big on the list.

Restoration “Those were our main things that had to happen for us to build this place. You really do build the house around those things,” said Eberts. “On the restoration side, most everything is emergency services,” said Eberts, explaining that they are ready for 24-hour emergencies. Crew offers services like duct, carpet, and sanitization cleaning as well as mold removal, water damage restoration, and fire restoration.

“That’s one of the things we take pride in,” said Eberts. “We take care of our customers whether it’s a $2,000 water loss or $1 million loss. It’s really the same care for our customers.” No matter the damage, Crew offers to not only remove the damage, but also reconstruct the area to return it to its former glory.

After building playground equipment and other things for children, he loves what comes next. “My favorite part of this job is probably when I’m finished and the kids finally get to play on the playground and to see how happy they are,” said Johnson. Johnson stopped by to set 605’s Alana and John Snyder up with a backyard playground set of their own. Now their son can spend the warmer months crossing the bridge, climbing his own rock wall, slipping down a slide, swinging as high as he can, and climbing across the monkey bars (when he’s old enough). Owen, their son, is just turning 3 this year. Let’s cut him some slack, as he’s not a super human. While the company’s main projects are typically building structures or furniture such as this playset, sheds, or picnic tables, they are flexible on their services.

- Austin Johnson “We can assemble, create, build, or move just about anything,” said Johnson. “We even do landscaping.” Johnson offers assembly, disassembly, installation of flooring and other materials, playground refurbishment, and more. He’s even willing to cart around his projects to build them and transport them to the correct location. “I’ve had to move a swing set from Wisconsin and bring it all the way back to Sioux Falls and assemble it,” he explained. During the holiday season, Johnson hung up decorative lights on houses for clients, so they didn’t have to. “I want everyone to know that Assemble It 605 is a ‘jack of all trades’ company. We do everything, so don’t be afraid to ask,” said Johnson. Though Assemble It 605 is based in Sioux Falls, Johnson says he has built things in South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, and Nebraska. He’s willing to travel and even haul anything you may need him to. “If you are questioning whether you’re able to do it or not, I would just call us,” said Johnson, aiming to make big projects much easier for his clients.

ince the Lavallees were married, they’ve moved often, living everywhere from New England to the Midwest to the South. About 20 years ago, they found themselves back in South Dakota. “We’ve really stuck around in Sioux Falls. I still have my mom and a couple siblings here, so after moving 14 times, I was ready to stay home,” said Michelle Lavallee.

Old Roots Lavallee says her son, Kris, lives with his wife and two children in the oldest house in Beadle County.

In Huron, the couple owns an acreage, and they once lived in a large home in Riverview Heights. “My husband was retiring, and we got tired of taking care of a big house,” said Lavallee. “I thought it’d be fun to live downtown.” The couple found a two-bedroom apartment in the Carpenter Building in downtown Sioux Falls, cutting their living space into a fraction of the room in their previous five-bedroom house. “It was fun with the pool and wonderful things in the yard, but we were at that point when we wanted to do something different,” said Lavallee. With the apartment in Sioux Falls, they also decided to make her husband’s dream of owning a home on the beach come true, too. “At the same time, we bought a big place in Costa Rica,” said Lavallee. “We have that combination of thinking it’d be fun to have a home in a warmer climate and then being tired of too much maintenance.”

“Somebody said I’d be great at Children’s Home Society. They had an opening for a new CEO. I’ve been there for two and a half years, and it’s been a blast.”-Michelle Lavallee about work When they downsized, the couple also had to get rid of nearly three-fourths of their furniture before moving everything into the apartment downtown. “We bought the table and chairs when we were first married and lived right outside of New York City,” she said. Another staple piece she couldn’t part with was her piano, which she got from Steinway Hall in New York City. The large black instrument sits to the left of the front door, greeting anyone who enters. “Some people have much more contemporary lofts, and this could be too, but we just kind of gathered stuff. My place in Costa Rica is more contemporary, so you get that fun part and then the farmer’s traditional here,” explained Lavallee. With access to countless restaurants and shops, Lavallee keeps busy when she isn’t working as the CEO of Children’s Home Society of South Dakota. She loves to visit various locations within walking distance or even in her own building for some food and entertainment.

“We laughingly call Carpenter Bar our living room,” she explained. For a bite, her favorite restaurants include Parker’s Bistro, Minervas, and Crawford’s. “So much of downtown is great. You can’t do better than the bike trails. It’s such a walkable city. I often walk to work—about 2.5 miles,” said Lavallee. When her grandkids are in town, she loves taking them downstairs to EightyOne Arcade Bar to try their hands at some competitive Pac-Man Battle Royale or Pump It Up, a dancing game.

“The Hello Hi could be in my top two because the pizza is so good,” insisted Lavallee. “If I don’t feel like cooking and I’m not dieting, I will zip in there and get a piece of pizza in two minutes.” But her favorite place to spend time is right outside of her building on Carpenter’s patio on Phillips Avenue. “It’s a blast to just sit downtown on the weekends when it’s nice out. You walk by the Carpenter, and you know everybody,” said Lavallee.

605 Stops By The Crow’s Nest written by Dawn Geertsema + photos by Alana Snyder Tim Smith was happy in the home he was living in, but when he stumbled upon a place he couldn’t refuse, it was time to change his plans. “I don’t really need a big house, but I fell in love with the property and the views so much I just had to buy it,” said Smith. The property sits on the west edge of Rapid City, while the other side faces about 500 acres of forest views. “I’m in the Black Hills sleeping, but I’m 10 minutes away from fine dining,” said Smith. Since the house is much bigger than what he required, he rents out an apartment above the garage to a friend and another section of the house called The Crow’s Nest on Airbnb for couples or individuals to have a place to get away. “It justified me buying it as a single man,” Smith explained with a laugh. “I get a kick out of Airbnb. I think it’s super fun.”

In the past, he would rent out his home to visitors, so he’s had over two years of experience with the app. Now he’s a superhost for the suite. Some of the most recent guests were a couple from Ellsworth Air Force Base looking for a staycation. “It makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside that two people that are in love got to have a little time to themselves,” said Smith. The couple sent their child to stay with a grandparent and took some time to just the two of them. “When they left, they sent a sweet review about what a good time they had and how they want to come back again,” said Smith.

“It has huge windows and feels very spacious. The windows that face east are floor-to-ceiling, there are concrete counter tops, and the Scandinavian theme has many light wood tones,” explained Smith. But Smith says the biggest draw is the view.

“One side of the property faces Rapid City, so in the morning you get insane sunrises and at night you get the city lights,” said Smith. “On the other side of the property, you face the Black Hills so you get crazy sunsets and storms in the summer.” There’s plenty to keep guests busy in the area, but if the city isn’t offering what they need, they can hike paths in the woods nearby.

A young child, around 3 or 4 years old, followed behind his grandmother as she tended her garden, helping her bury seeds into the soil. He was fascinated that one tiny seed could transform into such complex stems and leaves as those that produce zinnias, hollyhocks, and morning glories. From then on, Joshua Cooper’s love of plants only continued to grow. “I thought it was miraculous,” said Cooper. “From my late teen years to now, I’ve had houseplants.” He began with a small collection that slowly expanded. In downtown Sioux Falls, Cooper now shares how to take care of different plants when they buy from his selection at The Deku Tree. Tree

To The Roots From his teenage years through college and even through a religious mission, he continued to nurture various pots, marveling at what was sprouting inside them. “I moved to Los Angeles, and it was really easy to care for all my plants because the conditions were prime with the rain and the temperature.” said Cooper. The South Dakota climate is a different story with changes in the weather that are like night and day.

“I switched gears and moved back here to a small little cabin, and I left for Christmas to see my mom in Utah,” he explained. When Cooper returned, the South Dakota cold had taken nearly half of his collection. “That was an important start for me because I realized it’s not about the actual plant but the spirit taking care of plants. Sometimes you lose them and sometimes you don’t,” said Cooper. In his next home, he converted the garage into a greenhouse. With the space to expand, Cooper joined a Sioux Falls Facebook group dedicated to plant lovers. There, he began listing plants and going to plant swaps.

Next came the greenhouse in his backyard in Humboldt. And though he loves browsing for more greenery to take home in local greenhouses in the Sioux Falls area, he wasn’t satisfied. “I would find that the selection left me wanting for things that I couldn’t find,” he said. He chose another path to add to his collection: a 22-foot bus to travel the nation for rare plants. Cooper explained, “Most of our plants come from these trips where I get to pick them out with my own hands, choose the very best of the stock, and curate the selection.”

A Shop with a Soul “Officially we started as a business in February 2020, which is the same month the pandemic took hold, and that played in our favor miraculously,” said Cooper. “People were in their houses, and they wanted something beautiful to look at—something different, something alive.” Eventually a storefront on Phillips Avenue in the Jones421 Marketplace opened up, providing walls of windows and an ideal space for The Deku Tree. In this location, customers are immediately enveloped in warmth, the smell of incense, and positive energy from countless plants from the floor to the ceiling. “Plants are living works of art, and people feel that, whether they say it in those words or not,” said Cooper. “When plants are treated like art and displayed that way, that’s what most people want to bring home to their houses.” Cooper has hand picked and nurtured each plant found in the shop, so making sure customers can properly care for the plants they take home is of the utmost importance. “I care about the customer and the plant, and I want them both to have a good experience together,” said Cooper.

Creating a Houseplant Haven “A lot of people are stuck in the spot where they don’t think they have the touch, but it’s not some woo-woo thing. It’s just science really to give the plant what it wants,” explained Cooper. “One of my top recommendations for people is to find a plant for the place and not a place for the plant.” To find the best plant for your home, Cooper notes that the four elements of earth, air, fire, and water should be taken into consideration. These elements are fundamental when he teaches Houseplants 101 and more advanced classes. Once you’ve figured out where you want to add greenery, think about earth with soil, air circulation, and fire through the quality of light that will reach the plant. Choose a plant to fit the conditions in that spot, and don’t forget the final element: water. “Then you get to sit back, and the energy you would have spent worrying about this plant not doing very well is then spent marveling and wondering at the plant and watching it be happy,” said Cooper.

WORK. WORK. WORK. Before I came to the bank, I worked 860 of 864 days at my previous job. I got burnt out, so I left there in March of 2021 and took a 10week hiatus before coming here.

DOWNTOWN SIOUX FALLS I tend to go to the same places. I used to work downtown, so I'd go to Coffea Roasterie a lot. Before it was Coffea, it was Kaladi’s Bistro. I don’t even remember when it changed over. I worked across the street, so it was an easy place to go.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE A PATIENT WHO WHO IS NERVOUS ABOUT A PROCEDURE? Nervousness about a root canal is normal. There is a stigma that root canals are painful, hated procedures. I am here to tell everyone who will listen that this is not the case with a modern root canal treatment. We have several ways to help with anxiety, ranging from TVs with noise canceling headphones to weighted blankets and heated neck wraps to nitrous oxide and other medications that can help you relax during the procedure.
