With all of our South Dakota travels, it only made sense for 605 to get a Sprinter van to explore year round. It’s amazing how road trips change when you don’t have gear on your lap and you can actually stretch out to take a post-gas station snack nap.

THANK YOU TO OUR 605 MAGAZINE ISSUE SPONSOR:

In this issue, we took the van for a ride to Rapid City and Hill City for local food hot spots, attractions, and a variety of unique lodging experiences. Highlights include farting horses (a story for another time), alligators, foie gras French toast, and more. Where will this summer take you?

M U LT I M E D I A E D I T O R As the trusty Multimedia Editor of this ragtag bunch, I’m mostly tethered indoors to a computer, editing photos. And like everyone else, cabin fever has set in after the past two years of just staring at four walls. I need a jolt of adrenaline! The closest I’ve gotten to adventure recently is painting my nails a new color, so I’m excited to branch out this summer with doable, local travel. Editing the photos in this brand spankin’ new issue has given me some great ideas about the options that are just a car ride away!

Tenley Schwartz hang out with

written by Dawn Geertsema & photos by Emily Swan “Downtown Sioux Falls, Inc. is a nonprofit, membership-based organization focused on making downtown a great place to be,” said marketing manager Tenley Schwartz. Along with events like Downtown Riverfest and Downtown Burger Battle, the organization does everything they can to ensure downtown is a pleasant environment for locals and visitors alike. “We do so much more—our incredible Clean & Green team cleans sidewalks, welcomes visitors, cares for flower baskets, and hangs Christmas lights,” said Schwartz. “We also offer connection and support to small businesses through member meetings, neighborhood tours, and collaborative events.” Schwartz works with DTSF by sharing events, news, and photos, as well as creating graphics and branding elements. Learn more about Schwartz’s favorite places and activities.

one two

You’ll catch me thrifting and poking around antique stores on the weekend.

three

I love the energy downtown in the summertime, but I find I need to balance it out with solo time outdoors. The quiet of state park trails and bustling of DTSF events are a harmonious duo in my mind.

four

Five Random Facts

I really value curiosity, so I’ll take one-off classes, like stained glass or naturalism. Anything I learn is a skill that might pop up in a totally different part of life.

I’m fascinated by how we perceive, use, and relate to time, especially in work settings. I get myself stuck when I try to be hyper-productive. I get myself unstuck when I mess around and make stuff.

five

C U LT U R E + E N T E R TA I N M E N T

My goal with print design is to make something beautiful to hold in your hands. Sometimes I nail it. Sometimes I’m already looking forward to improving it next year.

summer fun

Our summer event season is nonstop with monthly Eastbank Block Parties with live music, cold drinks, great food truck fare, and an array of yard games. Shop the craziest markdowns of the summer at downtown shops during Crazy Days weekend, July 15-16. The family-favorite Downtown Riverfest returns to the banks of the Big Sioux on August 20 with food trucks, music, vendors, and kids activities. Enjoy outdoor Moonlight Movies at Fawick Park on the second Thursday of each month (July 14, August 11).

casual caffeine

You can find me lingering over a book and decaf Americano at The Source Coffee Roastery + Taproom. It’s my second living room at this point: I’ll do meetings, friend gatherings, remote work days, book club, and chill weekend reading sessions here. And now that Swamp Daddy’s has opened their extended dining area, I may never leave the Jones421 building.

books, books, & more books

I bring home a huge stack of books from the downtown library every couple of weeks. I’m running out of bookshelf space and have resorted to piling them everywhere. Lately, I’ve been reading memoirs, natural gardening books, and kids’ picture books.

i wonder…

I refresh by taking a pocket sketchbook to Good Earth State Park or Falls Park and do some nature journaling. I’m part of the ‘22 SD Master Naturalist class, which encourages you to say “I wonder…” instead of jumping to conclusions. It’s a pretty great way to move through life, not just nature walks!

WITH THAT, THEY BEGAN A TOUR OF THE WINERY.

“With the tours, we wanted to be able to connect the ability to touch the fruit, see the fruit, see the actual production, and taste the product,” said Matthew. Belle Joli’ specializes in sparkling wine made using the traditional Champagne method. The 605 team was able to try the Brut Rosé Sparkling Wine, a gold medal winner in the 2019 San Francisco International Wine Competition. “It was phenomenal. We each ended up purchasing a bottle to take home for a special occasion,” said Alana. Brut Rosé boasts black and red fruit with notes of grapefruit and citrus. It pairs well with oysters, lemon parsley mussels and clams, and tuna steak.

Blind Tasting

They offer three different categories of wine: classic for dry wine lovers, estate for sweeter palates, and port style dessert wines.

One of their more popular still wines is the Harvest Rosé, which is a Riesling blend with strawberry and rose petals on the nose. This drink pairs best with exotic cuisine, aged gouda, and seafood.

Competition, Choi says their Brut Rosé beat Moët & Chandon, one of the largest champagne producers in Champagne, France.

“I’m originally from the [Black Hills] area,” explained Matthew. “When I went to the enology program at California State University Fresno, I realized the potential for the fruit to be grown in the South Dakota area.” The harsh winters in South Dakota can be an obstacle, but the French hybrid grapes that they use can withstand large temperature ranges. “What’s amazing is that when you look at everything else it takes to grow the fruit (they call it growing degree days), we’re really similar to regions like Champagne, France,” said Matthew. Operating since 2007, the company is one of the only productions in the Midwest that use the traditional method, which requires the beverage to ferment a second time within the bottle.

Fact Belle Joli’ Winery’s Estate Reserve Brut Sparkling Wine was chosen to christen the USS South Dakota submarine in Connecticut in 2017. The smaller bottle was placed into a pewter sleeve and broken against the sub’s bow.

Co-owners Justin Henrichsen and Smith also each have their own businesses, including Independent Ale House and Smith’s Liquor Gallery in Rapid City, as well as Monks Ale House in Sioux Falls. “The biggest difference between those bars Independent and Monks Ale House and this one is that we have a full liquor license, so we’re able to offer those cocktails and liquor,” said Fritz. Two of the most popular drinks are the Barrel Aged Old Fashioned and the Whiskey Sour. The Old Fashioned is made with Buffalo Trace Bourbon, Angostura Aromatic Bitters, and simple syrup, topped with an orange peel and cherry garnish. “It’s a simple cocktail, but it’s very good and by far our most popular drink,” explained Fritz. Another classic, the Whiskey Sour, is made with Mellow Corn Whiskey, egg white, simple syrup, and fresh lemon juice. Some of the other cocktail options include a Manhattan, Margarita, and Sidecar. “When we first opened, about a third of our sales were beer, but now it’s closer to 20-25 percent of sales are beer,” he said.

D.C. Booth National Historic Fish Hatchery

High Plains Western Heritage Center

Matthews Opera House & Arts Center

Established in 1896, D.C. Booth Historic National Fish Hatchery and Archives was constructed to propagate, stock, and establish trout populations in the Black Hills of South Dakota and Wyoming. After a very successful fish production history, the Hatchery ceased operations in the mid-80s and reopened with a new mission and partnerships to help preserve the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service’s historic and cultural heritage.

Opened in 1989, the High Plains Western Heritage Center features a 5-state regional museum founded to honor the Old West Pioneers and American Indians of North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Wyoming, and Montana. The Black Hills are rich in history. It is a region that was at the unique intersection of nearly every culture and economic circumstance that shaped the American West. The Center was founded to preserve this past, inform the present and interact with our visitors through our extensive collections, archives, and live events.

The Matthews Opera House opened on December 3, 1906 with a political farcecomedy called “The Lion and the Mouse.” Over the next century, the opera house was used for everything from motion picture shows to basketball practices to a shooting gallery. In the 1980s, a major renovation project restored the theater to like-new conditions. Today the Matthews Opera House is the centerpiece of the Spearfish Arts Center, and plays host to many theatrical and musical events.

Spearfish Canyon The breathtaking limestone palisades of this creek-carved gorge are more ancient than the Grand Canyon – albeit much closer together. Once accessible only by horseback, Spearfish Canyon’s narrow, 1000-foot walls are among the most spectacular scenery in the Black Hills. Spearfish Canyon is the Northern Hills’ number one natural attraction. A great spot for wildlife enthusiasts, as the diverse array of plant life, provides a comfortable home for deer, mountain goats, porcupines and bobcats, Spearfish Canyon is also a place for outdoor enthusiasts. Rock climbing, biking, hiking, and fishing are just a few of the activities that visitors and residents utilize this natural wonder for.

Another delicacy on the menu is the hearty Buffalo Stew, which has buffalo sirloin, potatoes, and a mix of vegetables, all served in a bread bowl. “This recipe has been around for many years, and we’ve carried it through the times,” said Quenzer. Last summer, the restaurant’s patio underwent renovations, doubling its seating capacity and making way for an experience more in tune with the surroundings. “When Latchstring did that, they did some clear cutting so we have an even better view of the pines,” Quenzer explained. “After eating, you can hear the rush of the Spearfish waterfall in the background.”

Fact Lake Lorraine is privately owned and is not open to the general public. Outdoor Campus has a partnership with the Lake Lorraine developers for pop-up classes.

Taking place on private Lake Lorraine, students meet near the water in the CarForSale.com parking lot before walking down a hill to meet Nelson with all the gear. Outdoor Campus has a partnership with the lake owners, who allow them to use it for classes like these. All participants must sign waivers. He walks them through the gear, what it’s used for, where to get it, and other must-know information as he assists them in finding a life jacket, swim fins, and a mask that fits their body. Snorkels have a more universal fit, so each student is issued one of those as well without hassle.

“We have different sizes of fins for different sizes of feet,” said Nelson. “The same is true for masks. Masks are not one-size-fits-all because our faces are all different.” When sizing life jackets, make sure to pay attention to the weight limit on the tags. When in doubt, check with the instructor for the safest option. “We get all the gear on and get comfortable snorkeling, and then once we start seeing fish, we’ll start trying to shoot fish,” said Nelson.

Students will wade into the water backwards with the fins strapped on before propelling themselves around the top of the lake, gazing down through the mask in search of fish. “In this class, you don’t need to be a great swimmer; the fins and the life jacket take care of all that,” said Nelson. “Participants shouldn’t be worried about being scared to try this activity. It is very fun, relaxing, and can be a great open water activity.” Nelson is a certified master scuba diver and a hobby spearfisherman. He’s always prepared to be proactive if need be. After they’ve acclimated to the water, Nelson will hand out the pole spears, which are much safer for the students than the spearguns that he uses himself. “These pole spears are one piece, and they are designed to use the rubber band to spring the pole and spear forward,” he said. “So you’ve gotta get pretty close to the fish, but with snorkeling it’s very possible.” For big fish like full-grown bass, there’s a double-barbed tip. For smaller fish like bluegills, there’s the three-pronged tip.

Brewing Bright After check-in and a little refreshing in the room, our next stop was Rapid City’s newest craft brewery, Woodland Republic Brewing & Blending, which is less than a 10-minute walk from the hotel. “We want to make the taproom an inviting place to gather and provide a comfortable atmosphere for people from all walks of life,” said co-founder and head brewer Jesse Ewing. The spacious downtown brewery greets guests with friendly smiles and vibrant colors stretching from the large mural on the wall to the chairs, and even across the floors leading to the garage doors. Woodland specializes in sour beers. “Jesse let me try a few samples of the beers on tap, such as Cream Cheese Stuffed Blueberry French Toast and Peaches & Cream–Sour de Jour,” said Taylor. Alana chimed in, “The first beer literally tasted like drinking french toast. It was incredible.”

“At Woodland Republic, we're looking to fill a niche with a heavily rotated tap list of hazy IPAs, fruited sours, big stouts, and the still-to-come spontaneous and mixed fermentation barrel-aged beers that take months to years to mature.” Woodland Head Brewer Jesse Ewing

AS YOU EXPLORE RAPID CITY, CHECK OUT THE CITY OF PRESIDENTS THROUGHOUT DOWNTOWN.

Brunch Time The following morning, the team headed a few minutes down the street for a bite at Tally’s Silver Spoon, a Rapid City staple by executive chef Benjamin Klinkel. “The modern diner has a great feel to it with a unique bar in the center, along with images of famous and historical chefs on the walls,” said Alana. Of course, you can find more than just brunch here. “They’re impressive menu carries throughout the day with lunch and dinner, including the popular Indecision Menu,” said Peterson, mentioning the perfect option for anyone who can’t make up their mind. When the food arrived, we had quite the feast to take in. Taylor had the Smoked Salmon Benedict and the Really French Toast. “Alana had the Chicken Fried Steak, which could have fed three people, and she watched me attempt to eat two meals—just like any normal brunch date we have,” said Taylor. With full stomachs, we packed up and said goodbye to Rapid City.

Back on the Saddle Again Hopping back in our handy Sprinter van, we were on the road again, heading to Hill City. Alana’s favorite artist, John Mayer, blared from the speakers for a little over 30 minutes. We soon arrived at the Mount Rushmore KOA Resort & Lodge at Palmer Gulch. “The resort is jam packed with amenities and activities for guests of all ages to enjoy,” said Nathan Lail, general manager. “We are located centrally in the Black Hills, which is only a short drive from all of the major attractions and have sweeping mountain beauty from every part of the resort.”

“Whether you want to stay in a glamping cabin, hotel suite, mountain lodge, Deluxe Patio RV site, or bring your tent, we’ve got a spot for you!”

They offer shopping, restaurants, swimming, entertainment, fishing, sports, a dog park, rentals, and so much more. For lodging, there are campgrounds for RVs and tents, as well as cabins. “We were thrilled to try one of a variety of cabins. It slept up to six people and had a bonfire, a new grill, a porch, a bonfire, new grill, porch, bathroom, and flat screen TVs along with a full kitchen,” said Alana.

THE CAMP RESORT HAS OVER 100 HORSES.

You’re never too far from the lodge and store just in case you run out of marshmallows for roasting. “I would love to bring my son since it's so family friendly,” said Alana. “And he's obsessed with horses, and they have around 100 at the KOA. It would be his dream.” After dropping off luggage, we suited up for a trail ride in the Hill City sun. Taylor came prepared with cowboy boots, her grandma’s old button up, and a modern cowboy hat. After the horses, Mimi and Honeybun, were strapped into saddles, Alana and Taylor hoisted themselves up. “Patty, who led the trail ride, was a hoot and kept us laughing the whole time,” said Taylor.

Let’s Eat A morning on the trails makes one’s stomach start to grumble. It was about time for some cheesy goodness at Mangiamo! Pizzeria, which we had heard great things about. “Mangiamo offers the only wood-fired pizza in the Black Hills. Russ was trained in Staten Island in making authentic Napolitano pizza,” said Deb Leatherman about her husband and co-owner. “We hand make our dough from scratch and use only the freshest ingredients, baking our pizzas in a wood-fired oven from Italy.” We tried the award-winning Pasta alla Vodka penne pasta with Italian sausage in a house-made vodka sauce. Also on the table were delicious dishes like Strawberry Salad, Caprese Plate, cannolis, and two pizzas. “Our Margherita Pizza takes customers back to the roots of pizza and is a favorite. The Smoking Bear Pizza is another favorite with pepperoni and Italian sausage,” said Deb. The pizzeria is the perfect place for anyone wanting to enjoy a meal on the patio in downtown Hill City.

Colossal Fossils Our next stop went back in time. “If you love dinosaurs and want a chance to see skeletons up close and personal, an absolute Hill City must-stop is the world-renowned Everything Prehistoric and Museum at Black Hills Institute of Geological Research,” said Janet Wetovick-Bily, executive director with Hill City Area Chamber of Commerce. “The institute houses the world’s most extensive research collection of Tyrannosaurus rex fossil material, plus an amazing array of beautiful minerals, rocks, and gems.” Researchers come from around the globe to study one of the world’s finest fossil collections. “The museum amazed me with all of the interesting facts and made me realize how big some of the dinosaurs actually were,” said Taylor. Across the museum, we browsed and read about fossils, minerals, rocks, and more. And there’s always something to physically touch. “Of course I left with four dinosaur toys to bring home, and their gift shop is almost as big as the fossils,” said Alana.

Sit Back & Relax To round out the trip, we couldn’t leave without swinging by Miner Brewing Company and Prairie Berry Winery in Hill City. “The sun was setting, and everyone was playing yard games, kids were running around the grass, and others were just relaxing with friends and sipping on wine and craft beer,” said Alana. Taylor noted that there were so many dogs, making it the perfect place for dog parents to hang out without leaving their furry family members at home. “We are here to brighten the day of our guests, making the world a better place, one beer at a time,” said Casey Nordine, taproom hospitality manager. Winding down from the excitement of the trip, it was time to head back home. So Taylor hopped into the driver’s seat, thinking about everything she wanted to do when she returned to the Black Hills. And Alana curled up with her blanket and pillow, lulling off to sleep to the sound of the tires on the asphalt.

DeAnn Echols written by Dawn Geertsema & photos by Cailyn Patterson & John Snyder

DeAnn Echols worked part time for years before excitedly purchasing the Great Outdoor Store (GOS) in 1999. “I like to describe us as an outdoor lifestyle store. Yes, we do carry camping and climbing equipment, but we also have great sportswear and footwear for just hanging out at home,” she said. Located in the Historic Rock Island Depot, Echols wants GOS to allow customers to feel comfortable in the outdoors with all of their activities. “We are proud that most of our brands have a great sustainability story and really care about our land and outdoor spaces of all kinds,” she said. Learn about one of the faces behind the shop.

5 Questions with Echols What are your favorite places in South Dakota to spend time outside? My husband and I love the southern Black Hills and have taken so many camping and hiking trips there. It is such a special place to us. We also just love walking at our local outdoor trails. Great Bear Ski Valley, Good Earth State Park, and Tuthill Park are all great, quick places to take a nature walk.

What's a brand that you swear by? My go to brand has always been Patagonia. They make such great quality products that last forever and wear so well no matter how you use them. I have had pieces from that that are older than I care to admit, but I still love them! I think that’s what speaks to a great brand: Quality, longevity, and recyclable. They have it all.

where are some of your favorite places to stop when you’re downtown? I love shopping at all the cute boutiques downtown. Terra Shepard Boutique & Apothecary is amazing. I also love Sticks and Steel and Simply Perfect. We have a nice, diverse selection of shops and restaurants downtown. There is really something for everyone.

What’s your favorite recreational activity? Our favorite activity next to travel is probably hiking. We love to visit our National parks and have taken several hiking trips to Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks.

How do you spend rainy days? I don’t usually let the rain stop me from doing whatever, I just dress for the rain. But if I’m just hanging out and relaxing, I love to read, bake, or just hang out with my husband watching movies.
