This issue was a blast to create for a multitude of reasons. The 605 team got to experience outdoor attractions from all over the state, and I can now say I’ve been in a bear exhibit with a black bear and lived to talk about it. It’s always a blast to see what the Rushmore Tramway Adventures crew are up to in Keystone, and after our adventure we feasted at the Custer Wolf in Custer. Did I mention I can also now say that 605’s Taylor Hanson has driven me in the Custer Wolf pedicab? We can talk about that later. Enjoy this issue, and get out and explore South Dakota!

Tyson Schultz M U LTIMEDIA DES IG NER

Y’all ever seen a large swarm of barn swallows attack a drone before? I hadn’t either until our 605 Tries adventure in Garretson on the Jesse James Pontoon Tour. It just happened to be the time they come out to feed, and they were flying around catching bugs. Seems convenient. Are we sure these “birds” AKA feathered drones aren’t just sent to attack civilian drones from recording some secret truths in the area? I’m not quite convinced. The rest of the trip was awesome. Nothing beats being on a pontoon in the sun on an afternoon I’m usually sitting in the office. Our guide was fun, charismatic, and knowledgeable about the area. He often quizzed us, and that’s when I realized I never retained anything from my time at USD. Sorry, Prof. Mark Sweeney. I have failed you. THANK YOU TO OUR 605 MAGAZINE ISSUE SPONSOR: SOUTH DAKOTA

Over 100 Years of Wildlife in Watertown

BRAMBLE PARK

ZOO by Alana Snyder

Since 1912, South Dakotans and visitors have had the chance to “come closer” to over 600 animals representing 130 species from around the world at the Bramble Park Zoo in Watertown. Zoo director Dan Miller, who has been there for 33 years, gave me, along with Katherine Danforth of the Watertown Convention & Visitors Bureau, a behind-the-scenes-look at the popular attraction. “The mission of Bramble Park Zoo is to come closer to the natural world around us,” said Miller. “We allow our guests the opportunity to come face to face with tigers, snow leopards, lemurs, monkeys, birds, fish, and reptiles.”

We met him right outside of the entrance, which has offices, indoor exhibits, the gift shop, and the Terry Redlin Environmental Center. Built in 2003, the center houses fish tanks, two educational classrooms, and the Upper Big Sioux Watershed Program. “The Upper Big Sioux Watershed Program improves water quality through a cost share program with area landowners,” said Miller. The center is named after the late Watertown artist Terry Redlin, who was an American artist known for outdoor themes and wildlife. Watertown is also home to the Redlin Art Center with a vast collection of his works. “Terry Redlin’s vision was to create a center where people of all ages could view native animals and educate youth about our local water environment,” said Miller. “Terry also wanted to develop a program to improve water quality.” Miller showed us the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA)-accredited zoo via golf cart, and we stopped along the way to visit with students attending zoo classes and with different staff working the exhibits. He told us there are only 240 locations with the AZA accreditation in the world.

The zoo is also home to the largest collection of De Brazza’s Monkeys, and we braked the cart to watch them lounge. Next were the Black-and-White Colobus Monkeys, who were just getting a snack from staff. Miller quizzed us, “Know why their hair is so long? So it helps them glide in the air as they leap.” After some more monkey time, we drove to a “staff only” door. Miller told us to go ahead, and Danforth and I proceeded inside to find a zoo staff member with two black bears in the near distance in a holding cell. It was almost feeding time, and they surprised us by letting us step around the inside of their outdoor exhibit before the bears were released back in to feed.

LAZS Memberships

We then got to see the door slide open and the two bears pranced in to eat; one to a picnic table and the other to a spot in the shade. “Isn’t that something else,” said Miller as we hopped back in to tell him about our experience. To showcase how family friendly the zoo is, we swung by the KidZoo Complex with a large barn, a petting zoo, and playsets. “The KidZoo is an area where visitors come face to face and feed farm animals,” said Miller. “There are many farm implements, natural play structures, an artificial milking cow, a slide hill, a windmill, and areas to play in. We also train volunteers, zoo crew, and interns in this area.”

Become a member of the Lake Area Zoological Society. This provides members and their family with an Animal Express Card with special privileges and an invite to the annual LAZS Picnic on August 9. Tiers include an Individual Membership ($55), a Family Membership ($99), a Grandparent Membership ($99), a Donor Membership ($150), and a Sustaining Membership ($225).

Danforth and I had the chance to meet the KidZoo yak, and we may or may not have snapped a few selfies with it. Other zoo tour highlights included feeding a camel and getting up close to a sloth. As we pulled up back to the entrance, and before Miller had to make it to his next appointment, he mentioned being proud of what they’re doing and for the staff surrounding him. He said, “I’m just very thankful for my Bramble Park Zoo team for being a major tourist attraction and all their hard work to achieve AZA accreditation.”

Meet The Creatives

Backartigans by Dawn Geertsema

During pandemic times when inside activities were scarce, artists struggled to share their art with the world. Because Destiny Pinder-Buckley, Hannah Grapevine, and Rebekah Tuchscherer consider themselves artists of some variety, this simply wouldn’t do. “We were all looking for a way to bring people together as more and more people are able to get vaccinated, and the idea kind of just came to us over coffee one morning,” said Grapevine. Together, they created the Backartigans to make local art accessible, with Pinder-Buckley as the social media coordinator, Grapevine as art director, and Tuchscherer as communication and finance director. 28 |

From May to August, they planned to put up an art show once each month. Pinder-Buckley added that with enough interest, shows may continue into the winter months.

In the Books

In May, the collection of art for sale ranged from jewelry to paintings, embroidery, photography, and more.

They have two shows under their belts: Golden Hour, the May show in a backyard, and Neon Daydreams, the June show at Sunny’s Pizzeria.

“We did not want to display only one style or type of art,” said Pinder-Buckley. “The variety was the best part of the show—there was a piece of art for anyone.” The Backartigans opened up to 605, sharing more about the faces behind the events.

Naming Nostalgia

Pinder-Buckley

When they were coming up with the name of their new backyard art experience, The Backyardigans theme song would not leave Pinder-Buckley’s head. She said she just blurted out “Backartigans,” and it stuck. She said it fit their idea, “backyard, art, with a fun and playful theme.”

My favorite way to spend my leisure time is… snuggling with my cats, reading a good book, or daydreaming about my future travels. I really want to backpack South America or Southeast Asia. (Or both.)

For me, the best part of setting up the Backartigans was… getting to connect with a variety of artists and learn more about their individual arts. I love learning about what inspires other people to create.

My favorite local coffee shop is… The Breaks [Coffee Roasting Co]. I was obsessed with their coffee well before they opened their downtown location. Their bean juice is the best in town and gets my creativity flowing even when I’m low on sleep and motivation. I’m also probably the top buyer of their 64-ounce jugs of cold brew. I do not have a problem.

Outside of the Backartigans, I spend most of my time… making art, lounging in my

hammock in the nearest park, or exploring local hiking trails.

My favorite place to frequent in Sioux Falls is… Sanaa’s [Gourmet]. I’m there once a week (at minimum) to eat some of the best food in town.

My strongest talent is… my ability to make anything—and I mean anything—gluten-free or vegan.

Around Sioux Falls, it’s never surprising to find me… wherever local

music is playing. I love Sioux Falls’ outdoor concerts and festivals during the summertime and always hit up as many as I can.

Something many people don’t know about me is that… I have a pet

rabbit that’s also a supporter of the arts. His name is TJ.

When I’m not dedicating time to the Backartigans, I’m most likely… on the hunt for agriculture and environmental news at the Argus Leader. In addition to organizing the Backartigans art shows, I’m also a full-time journalist and spend my days talking with local farmers, breaking news, and writing about South Dakota’s No. 1 industry.

Rushmore

Tramway Adventures by Dawn Geertsema “We offer the ability to connect with nature and have fun at the same time,” said Cameron Fullerton, operations manager at Rushmore Tramway Adventures. “It’s an innate desire in human beings, and we’re just here to help people experience it.”

Travelers out in the Black Hills looking for adventure, relaxation, or a mix of the two, can stop just a mile away from South Dakota’s biggest attraction. “There’s upwards of three million people that visit Mount Rushmore National Memorial a year, and we only see 100,000, which is just a sliver,” said Fullerton. This means that many tourists are unsure about the park in Keystone, he continues.

“We service groups of all different types and sizes, from 10 people all the way up to 200 people, depending on what your organization is.” -Cameron Fullerton

“If I could get them here, I could show them that there’s something for everybody to do,” said Fullerton.

But now, the chairlift leads up to the Alpine Slide, Pinnacle Zip Tour, a garden, and the Mountain Top Grille.

Whether guests are seeking adrenaline spikes or would rather just sit back and watch from afar, Rushmore Tramway Adventures has activities for all kinds of travelers.

“Out of all the people who are taking the chairlift, a good 90% are taking the Alpine Slide, but 10% just want to ride up with their family and will take the chairlift back down,” said Fullerton.

In order to access the most popular adventures, guests ride the oldest attraction at the park: the chairlift. Fullerton says that from 1965 to 2002, Rushmore Tramway was just a chairlift.

Rushmore Tramway’s Alpine Slide, the most popular attraction, spans 2,000 feet and allows riders to wind down the mountainside with a hand brake to determine their speed.

Second to the Alpine Slide in popularity is the Pinnacle Zip Tour. “It’s incredible because it will go all the way around the perimeter of our property,” said Fullerton. The zipline tour is South Dakota’s first, and takes about two hours and at times reaches 400 feet above the ground below. “We’re the closest private property to Mount Rushmore, so you’re literally zipping as close to the monument as you can get,” explained Fullerton. And getting up close and personal with the monument has proven to be a popular tourist attraction. “Last year, we moved up to the second place on TripAdvisor for this area, which means we just outdid the Presidential Trail underneath Mount Rushmore.” Maybe someday Rushmore Tramway will make it to first place and pass the four stone heads themselves. “That’d be pretty wild,” he said.

For those who don’t have the time or the courage for a two-hour zipline commitment, there’s an 800-foot zipline at the bottom of the chairlift that takes about 20 minutes.

“You push yourself, and the way that the [eight] courses are structured, you can go through a certain difficulty. If you master it, you can move up to the next level,” explained Fullerton.

“There’s a lot of people that just want to come and knock it off of their bucket list, so they’ll do that,” said Fullerton.

He continued, “When people walk away from it, they’ve reached the maximum level of satisfaction, because they’ve pushed their limits as far as they can go.”

The Aerial Adventure Park is a popular attraction for those who are building confidence and skills.

Next to the chairlift, the four-lane, 450-foot Tubing Hill is another ride that is less fear-inducing.

“Most recently, we finished our summertime tubing hill, and that was built all in house. That was a crazy project, because we had to remove this entire hillside in order to develop our own layout for it.” Last but not least, there’s the 60-foot-tall Jump Tower stationed 30 feet above the ground level. “It’s the most terrifying looking thing that we offer,” said Fullerton. “It’s one of the things we added that people may strive to go do.”

He said roughly half of the guests who choose the ultimate package, which includes all of the attractions, will give the Jump Tower a go. “Maybe they come two or three times before they try it, but the buildup makes it really exciting for people,” said Fullerton. “It gives them something to work toward when they’re in the aerial park because there are some similar drops in there.” From a calming lift with presidential views to the spike of adrenaline that comes with a 25-foot freefall, Rushmore Tramway offers it all and everything in between. “If you’re coming to the Black Hills, you’re coming to be outside,” noted Fullerton. “So when you come here, you can do it all, or you can find the specific attraction that you want.”

TREES B u f fa l o R i d g e C a m p R e s o r t Treehouses

by Dawn Geertsema “What kid doesn’t want a treehouse? It doesn’t matter how old you are,” said Leah Scott, COO of Custer Hospitality. “Even as an adult, how great would it be to build that dream treehouse?” So when she heard the sales pitch adding treehouses to Buffalo Ridge Camp Resort, she didn’t hesitate to get involved. “The concept was to provide a unique, magical experience for young and old alike, using the imagination we all embraced as children,” said Scott.

In fall of 2019, the team got to work to build four getaways in the trees: the Gold Rush, the Renaissance, the Serenity, and the Coop.

“He was the best partner in taking time in every detail to make sure it was done right,” she said.

“It really was important to us that we get it right, to focus on the smallest of details, and to not miss an opportunity for the guests to really be brought back and tap into that imagination,” said Scott.

Though they wanted each one to be packed with amenities, Scott says it was hard to remember that they had to be small.

While Scott was able to personally make many decisions for each treehouse, Bill Crandall of Sun-Rise Construction brought the concepts to life.

50 |

“We had to remind ourselves in developing them that they are, in fact, treehouses,” said Scott. “As much as we wanted to put more amenities and a bigger space, we also wanted it to be cozy and feel like climbing up a tree in your backyard.”

Each treehouse leans heavily into its theme. “You can spend a few days in these treehouses, and every day you’re going to notice a new detail,” said Scott. If the town of Deadwood was a treehouse, it would be the Gold Rush. “The Gold Rush is our miner’s cabin,” she said. It harkens back to the Wild West with Jack Daniel’s light fixtures, a potbelly stove, a bison rug, and replica Annie Oakley guns. The bathroom is home to a whiskey barrel sink and a claw-foot tub. The Renaissance steps back in time to the era of swords, knights, and candlelight. “The Renaissance is our castle,” explained Scott.

“With the Ridge as a whole, we do our best to create a price point for everyone because we’re all in different places in our lives. This is when we’re creating those memories that your kids share with their kids, and their kids.” -Leah Scott

She said they aimed for a whimsical vibe with real cobblestone walls and wrought iron around, as well. “We have a dungeon peephole in the castle door,” she added. The idea for the Coop was based around a chicken coop. “Our little chicken coop with feeders as our light fixtures just to make it fun,” explained Scott. Scott is also proud of the washtub sink and the bird perch made from a real aspen limb. Last but not least is Serenity. “The Serenity plays off of a zen theme with bamboo and stone,” said Scott. “There’s really cool cut stone as the bathroom sink just to make it feel as authentic as we can.” She said they called it Serenity “just to use that word that we need so much. Just to pause. Take a deep breath and enjoy the moment.”

Staying in the treehouses, though small by square footage, guests have access to plenty of amenities. Even those that aren’t in the trees themselves can likely be found somewhere at the resort. “They all offer refrigerators, microwaves, a burner stove, heating and cooling, wi-fi, gas fire pits, and fire pits outside,” said Scott. 605 Tries

Jesse James Pontoon Tours by Jordan Rusche

Sunscreen packed and sunglasses on, the 605 team headed to Garretson to check out one of the area’s more popular attractions that included a historical character in South Dakota history. Waiting at the Split Rock Creek dock was local Bruce Rekstad, who greeted us to the Jesse James Pontoon Tours. The afternoon was going to entail everything from wildlife to geography, and some history of the area.

“We moved out to Spearfish and got involved in tourism out there. And we came back here, and somebody said, ‘Why don’t you start it up?’”- Bruce Rekstad

Rekstad, who is entering his 30th year running the pontoon tours, first got the idea for the tours in 1989 after offering a few boat rides during the Garretson Centennial. “We just had regular boats, and we took people up and down the river who had never been up there before,” he said. He started the business a few years later, and since then, he has given rides to all kinds of people, including biologists, geologists, school groups, orchestras, and teams from other media outlets. “In 1991, I took my first group of fourth graders from Brandon Valley,” said Rekstad. “A teacher had to jump overboard to push it because we got stuck, and I didn’t know where the rocks were yet.” The pontoon ride started with a short Lakota lesson from Rekstad, teaching us how to say greetings like “Haw kola,” meaning “Hello friend,” and other short phrases.

Rekstad has also been a teacher for 30 years and teaches Native American studies for schools in Sioux Falls, Flandreau, and the Crow Creek tribal community by Fort Thompson. He incorporates his knowledge of indigenous tribes and culture into his tour. Our tour was also filled with jokes and light teasing from Rekstad. Most were aimed at 605’s Alana Snyder, who took his trivia and tongue-twister questions in stride. Another draw to the tour was the local wildlife that make homes along the creek and its cliffs. Guests of the tour have spotted animals like turtles, bats, and even a bald eagle or two in the past, according to Rekstad. While the 605 team wasn’t lucky enough to spot an eagle, we did find the many cave swallows who make their homes on the short cliff sides along Split Rock Creek. 605’s John Snyder got up close and personal with the swallows using his drone. He had to cut its flight short before the birds mistook the drone for a meal. Most of Rekstad’s lessons taught us about the local rock formations and the area itself. The majority of this information was nothing new to 605’s Taylor Hanson, who grew up visiting Garretson, and marketing intern Delton Pease, who occasionally works and kayaks in the area. For the rest of us, Rekstad explained the origins of the creek and the cliffs, including what type of rock made up the landscape. “We call it Minnehaha County gold,” said Rekstad of the quartzite cliffs on either side of the water. Coming from a more central, pancake-flat part of South Dakota and having never been to Garretson before, I was awed by the low hills of the area, the dense cedar trees lining the water, and the beautiful quartzite cliffs along our tour. Halfway through the approximately hour-long trip down the creek, we finally arrived at the small cliffside caves where outlaw Jesse James allegedly hid after jumping Devil’s Gulch. It’s said James and the James-Younger Gang were chased on horseback to Garretson from Northfield, MN, after a failed robbery. As the story goes, the group was cornered when they reached the half-mile-long ravine just east of the creek. James was forced to jump the 20-foot gap to escape before heading north to the caves.

66 |

“That’s where they think [he] holed out in 1876 after their unsuccessful bank robbery attempt,” said Rekstad. Though caves are now off-limits to visitors, Rekstad’s tour allows an up-close look at the site. For those interested in learning more about the history and geography of Garretson, Rekstad says to call him for more tour information, as he doesn’t have regular tour times.

The Custer Wolf by Dawn Geertsema Tommy Hegerfeld started cooking in his early teenage years. “All through high school, all through college, he’s been cooking,” said his wife, Krystal. They worked together in the food industry for years, but soon enough was enough.

“We found ourselves working for a company with little control over what the staff was paid, and that’s why it was so important to do our own thing for the livelihood of our employees and ourselves,” said Krystal. So when they had the opportunity to open their own restaurant in Custer in 2016, they jumped at the chance, opening The Custer Wolf. “We’ve always just been focused on being a communityfocused, family-friendly pub with good, homemade food,” explained Krystal. They rented their space from 2016-2020 when they were able to move to the location they dreamed of.

“Our five-year plan from day one was to occupy this building on the corner,” she said. “We had an opportunity to purchase the building, and we were waiting for all of the things to fall in place to be able to do that.” In their new building, their focus on the community hasn’t changed. “Our goal is to provide really good, fresh food and local and regional beer in a really chill, laid-back atmosphere,” said Krystal. “People can hang out and get to know each other, and locals and tourists can become friends.” At the Custer Wolf, they keep their menu limited to provide the best quality food possible. “It’s pub-style food but we wanted to put a new twist on that,” Krystal described. “You’re going to get a burger and fries for lunch, but it’s going to be a really good burger and really good fries.” Tommy and the people in the back of the house work to find the best ways to accomplish that. “We’ve got a lot of really inventive people back there,” said Krystal. “We travel the world in the wintertime and find cool ideas and cool mixes of things and go from there.”

Ben’s Brewing Co. + Ben’s Brew Station bensbrewing.shop | bensbrewstation.com

by Dawn Geertsema In 2005, Ben Hanten was a bar owner in downtown Yankton. In 2017, he upgraded to Ben’s Brewing Co.

“I started looking at the space in February, staring at it,” Hanten said with a laugh. “I set a goal to be open by June 1.”

“It certainly made good beer and it got us to where we are today, but it wasn’t a place that was particularly safe for employees because of having to use steps to load in ingredients and to get kegs up and down,” said Hanten.

He continued, “Instead of just the beer coming out of here, now there’s a 4,300-squarefoot taproom and a 10,000 square foot patio.”

Far too soon, Hanten realized the 19th century building that houses the brewery just wasn’t fit to grow with the company as he needed it to. So in October of 2020, he added Ben’s Brew Station in a building that once belonged to the Freeman Company. “This is a 29,000-square-foot, two-and-a-half-acre property that has loading docks, more electrical than we could ever use, and lots of outdoor space,” said Hanten.

Brew Station Tours + Food Truck Saturday July 10-11 | 11 a.m. | Ben’s Brew Station Go on a tour of Ben’s Brewing Co.’s new sister location, Ben’s Brew Station. While you’re there, pick up some munchies from Broken Trellis Food Truck.

As soon as he got his hands on the property, he shifted the majority of the brewing production to the new sister location. He started brewing out of Ben’s Brew Station in December 2020. That was going to be all that was there. That is until the idea of a second taproom invaded his mind.

Because building material prices are steep, Hanten said he had to get creative. Four booths were built from items picked up at citywide cleanups, doors were made into tables, and the 51-foot bar is framed from materials from the building’s renovation. With all the square footage, the brew station has plenty of entertainment options from dartboards to a pinball machine, bocce ball, and more. “The downtown location is going to continue to be there,” he said. “It’s open 365 days a year, every TV package, liquor. This place is more like your traditional taproom.” Because the Brew Station doesn’t share these traits, there’s likely going to be a different crowd. Hanten expects craft beer enthusiasts to frequent the new location, while regulars and those who may want something different will likely go downtown.+

“Muddy Mo’s represents everything that I think is wonderful about South Dakota Magazine and my hometown.” - Katie Hunhoff

Hunhoff by Dawn Geertsema In 1985, Katie Hunhoff’s parents started South Dakota Magazine, and for the last 19 years, Hunhoff has been working for the publication. She is currently an owner and publisher. For quite some time, they’ve been thinking about starting a coffee shop. “We loved the idea of having a place for our readers to gather, share story ideas, meet our staff, and also have special events, such as book signings and poetry readings,” said Hunhoff. Muddy Mo’s Coffee House opened in Yankton in 2021 with a menu made from many local suppliers.

Jacob Limmer of Cottonwood Coffee in Brookings supplies coffee beans, Burbach’s Countryside Dairy supplies milk and yogurt, and there’s also Sioux Falls’ Songbird Kombucha available on tap. Inside Muddy Mo’s walls, there are many decorations tying back to the shop’s love of South Dakota. “We showcase some of our favorite magazine covers on the walls, as well as historic art from Yankton’s early years, such as a 10-foot painting of the Rosebud, a famous Yankton steamboat,” said Hunhoff. Hunhoff says she hopes the coffee shop will be both a destination for tourists and a staple for locals. “What makes me most excited about the coffee house is also the same for the magazine: creating a sense of community and a sense of place,” said Hunhoff. “Through gathering and sharing stories we help define who we are as South Dakotans.” Hunhoff shares with 605 her favorite things to fill her time with in Yankton.

Go with the Flow

Yankton’s Meridian Bridge is really like our city’s center in the summer. That’s where we have outdoor concerts and meet for walking, roller skating, skateboarding, or biking. There’s a splash pad for kids, several cool sculptures, and of course a breathtaking view of the Missouri [River].

One of my favorite summer pastimes is floating down the river in either a pontoon or an inner tube. The 59 miles of river below Gavins Point Dam is one of the few stretches of river that is still wild and untamed.

Axe Through Stress The Boat House is my hangout spot when I need a break from work. Throwing axes is very therapeutic for stress management.

Sliding Along The Yankton Curling Club is so much fun. Curling with this cool bunch of people keeps me sane in the winter. The tradition is that after matches the winners buy the losers a beer, and usually the competition continues with a game of crokinole at The Boat House.

“In today’s digital age, I think we are also giving people a little break from the real world while they travel with us on the printed page. That’s why I think magazines such as ours and the one in your hands continue to thrive despite digital competition.” -Katie Hunhoff

Smash Hits Downtown Yankton, named the Meridian District, is really thriving and is a great place for a road trip. We have several antique stores, boutiques, spas, and unique home décor stores. There are restaurants right on the river, two breweries, and of course The Ice House, famous for being a drive up beer joint where you can break your glass bottles under their deck.

Studious Strolls Strolling through the campus of Mount Marty University and the adjoining Sacred Heart Monastery and cemetery is one of my favorite recommendations to Yankton visitors. You’ll find several surprises and works of art on the riverside campuses.

Rolling on the River My favorite happy hour meet-up is the River’s Edge in downtown Yankton. Their outdoor patio faces the river. On Tuesday evenings you can hear the Yankton Area Summer Band play across the street in the park.

Blown Away Yankton has a thriving sailing community. Even if you’re not a sailor, just watching the sailboats at Lewis and Clark Lake, especially on a racing day, is an event in itself.

MURPHY’S PUB AND GRILL

by Jordan Rusche Starting off as a small bar with only 14 stools over 80 years ago, Murphy’s Pub and Grill in downtown Rapid City has seen its share of changes over the years. While the business started in a building just down the road from its current location, Murphy’s had to be relocated in the 1980s. “One of those neon [beer] signs fell off the wall and fell onto a couch, started the place on fire, and it burned down,” said Ginna Bragg, the general manager for Murphy’s. 88 |

“It’s a fun vibe, it’s a friendly vibe. I like to think I have one of the top staffs of chefs in the city.” Ginna Bragg But after reopening in the ‘90s, this time as both a bar and a restaurant, the establishment has become a well-loved staple to the Rapid City area over the last three decades.

“One of the most popular items for sure is our Buffalo Meatloaf,” said Bragg. “It is stuffed with mushrooms, wrapped in bacon, and served with mashed potatoes and asparagus. It’s the one that we sell the most of.”

These days, Murphy’s menu boasts an array of sandwiches, sides, and signature entrées, with something to please everyone who walks through its doors.

Another fan-favorite dish includes Fancy Fried Pickles, an appetizer of fried pickle spears wrapped in prosciutto and stuffed with mozzarella.

Murphy’s entrées vary between unique signatures, like the Buffalo Meatloaf, and more traditional pub food like Fish & Chips, beer-battered fish with malt vinegar and housemade tartar sauce. For those looking for something a bit more familiar, Murphy’s offers sandwich options like the Dakota Pulled Pork, served with watermelon-jalapeño barbecue sauce and pepper jack cheese.

There’s also a variety of burgers on the menu, like Pop’s Burger, served with bacon, green chili, and cheddar cheese. Bragg has her own favorites on the menu that she recommends to any newcomers to the restaurant. “Our [Grilled] Salmon entrée is amazing. Absolutely try the salmon if you’re here,” said Bragg. “Shepherd’s Pie is also a fantastic dish.”

FOOD + DRINK

The creations of the almost completely scratch kitchen aren’t the only things people come to Murphy’s for. The establishment’s bar prides itself on its wide selection of local beers and wines. “I have a great tap beer selection. We like to represent local within the state, and so we’re probably about 70% local right now,” said Bragg about their selection of drinks. The bar carries beer from breweries like Lost Cabin Beer Co., Spearfish Brewing Company, and Dakota Point Brewing. As for wine, one brand Murphy’s offers is Prairie Berry Winery and its signature Red Ass Rhubarb wine. Along with a wide selection of menu choices and a taste of local brewing, Murphy’s also offers a hidden surprise for those looking to experience something unique: a secret speakeasy underneath the restaurant. “It’s kind of word-of-mouth only. We don’t do a lot of advertising for it, but that’s how a genuine speakeasy was run,” said Bragg.

NightLife Murphy’s hosts local live music outside on its patio every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night. 92 |

5 QUESTIONS WITH O’FARRELL HOW DO YOU SPEND YOUR SUMMERS?

WHAT OUTDOOR SKILL ARE YOU BEST AT?

Outside of work you can usually find me outside. I love camping, hiking, traveling, and spending time with my friends and family. I usually try to take at least one camping trip out to the Black Hills in summer. There’s something special about drinking your coffee beside Grace Coolidge Creek in the quiet, cool mornings in Custer State Park, or a sunrise hike up Black Elk Peak. I’m also a sucker for days at the lake. I think I could sit on a tube at the beach forever!

My favorite classes to teach and assist with at the Outdoor Campus are Fishing and Paddling. I love seeing people’s faces light up when they catch their first fish or reel in a big bass. Paddling is also a great class to teach as it provides people the skills and knowledge to go explore our parks in a different way—by water.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE WAYS TO SPEND TIME OUTDOORS? I think I would be happy doing just about anything outside. The bike trails and parks around Sioux Falls are fantastic. I always like walking around Good Earth State Park, the Outdoor Campus, or Arrowhead Park.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE MOVIE AND WHY? The Goonies never gets old. The movie always made me dream of going on my own adventures as a kid. Today, the film gives me a sense of nostalgia. In a way, the kids in the movie remind me of myself as a kid, always exploring and on the lookout for a new adventure.

98 |

WHAT’S A HOBBY YOU ENJOY? I absolutely love snowboarding. I first stepped onto a snowboard as a 7-yearold at Great Bear Ski Valley and immediately fell in love. Snowboarding has allowed me to visit some amazing places and create hundreds of memories with my friends and family. There’s nothing like the sound of a snowboard cutting through the snow while you’re surrounded by tall pine trees and towering mountains.
