Rushmore Brewing Company Friday night to enjoy free food and drinks during the Tesla Meet and Greet Reception. My favorite medium to use is… paint markers. Most of the work I produce is digital, but there’s nothing like the thrill of drawing with no control-Z buttons.

My art style can be described by my Instagram followers as…

graphic, bold, retro futuristic, animated, playful, loose mother goose, manic, quirky grunge, funky electric, and whimsical [to name a few descriptions].

When I walk around downtown Yankton, one of my favorite places to stop by is… the woods underneath the Meridian Bridge on the Nebraska side.

Something that is influencing me right now is… dad rock and seasonal affective disorder.

My favorite place to go for inspiration is… the cemetery.

One thing I love about South Dakota… are the fireflies in spring.

Yankton Riverb & Summer Arts Festival written by Alana Snyder + photos by Alana & John Snyder The 605 team packed our gear and headed to Yankton for this year’s annual road trip in August. Ever since I went to college in Vermillion, I’ve wanted to attend the Yankton Riverboat Days & Summer Arts Festival. The family-friendly event

is three days of over 120 fine artists and craftsmen vendors, great food, a parade, music, and draws over 100,000 people every year.

My wish came true, as we attended the 38th Annual Yankton Riverboat Days and also got to explore the town and its unique offerings.

Arriving Hungry As we pulled into Yankton, our stomachs were rumbling. We arrived at River’s Edge, which has gorgeous views of the Missouri River on the patio and a wide range of high-quality menu items, like Bruschetta, Mussels, Rosemary Garlic Ribeye, and Citrus Dill Glazed Salmon.

Owner Brittany Trimble Wagner greeted us with a table full of food and drinks to sample. The restaurant is also a venue for events, including weddings. River’s Edge has items for different palates, including a casual Cuban and a Steak & Bleu Pasta. If you save room for dessert, there are options like Whiskey Bread Pudding and Lemon Amaretto Tiramisu.

Getting to the Station Ben’s Brewing Co. has been a Yankton staple for over a decade with a downtown location that includes the Copper Room speakeasy upstairs. Outgrowing the space, owner Ben Hanten found a 28,500-squarefoot building to become the brewing headquarters with a 248-person capacity and 28 beers on tap.

With pinball machines and a modern warehouse vibe, the newest addition, Ben’s Brew Station, has already turned into a community hangout. You can grab everything from a West Side Park IPA to a Kenny Pepper Ale to a limited release like Wakonda Wheat. On the go? Grab cans, a crowler, or a growler.

Keep it Going Because we needed more local craft beer in our lives, we headed over to the Backspace Brewing Co. taproom.

The brewery was named after the idea of “deleting boring beer.” The beer selection includes C-Squared Pale Ale and Maple Pecan Blonde Ale. Sip on McCall’s Gunpowder Nitro and attend an event, like the May 20 Yuya Mix Last Man on the Moon EP release show at 7 p.m. with Windy City Bites. The two-floor modern warehouse has a mezzanine for around 30-40 people and has been used for events like corporate presentations and NFL draft parties.

605’s Taylor Hanson and I met the “dishwasher” who was a grandmother of co-owner Tyler Schindler. “They pay me in beer,” she laughed, as she cracked each of us open her “secret stash” of Coors Light. The crew lovingly calls her “Mama Suzie,” and I could have probably hung out with her all night.

The Lodge It was time to figure out where we would lay our heads later that night. We drove to Lewis & Clark Resort, which has everything from traditional campsites to cabins and motel rooms. Our team was lucky enough to stay at The Lodge, which is a 4,000-square-foot building designed for family events, weddings, or corporate retreats. It features a gathering room that is 1,800 square feet, a large kitchen, six bedrooms, four bathrooms, and can sleep up to 28.

The waterfront view was breathtaking when we walked out back to the picnic tables and campfire area. This house is perfect for a family or friend reunion, and I definitely will stay there again.

After stocking our fridge and unpacking, we were eager to get to the next location: Black Orchid Drinkstillery.

Captain + Belle Every year, a Captain and Belle are chosen to represent the festival in various parades across the state. They are chosen typically for their help with the weekend in the past.

Time to Pregame With options like the Tequila Sunrise and Beulini, we knew we were in good hands. The “drinkstillery” is also known for its House Bloody Mary, which is “wasabically delicious.”

Hungry? Try the house-made Spiced Pretzels or Italian Tomato Fatbread. Now that it’s nice out, enjoy the outdoor patio with dueling fire pits.

Let’s Fest It was finally time to head to Yankton Riverfest & Summer Arts Festival. The smells of corn dogs and funnel cakes alone got us in the mood as we meandered around all of the tents at Riverside Park.

There was something for everyone with fair-like rides, bouncy houses, and a beverage and food shelter.

We stopped by the amphitheater to watch a musical group, Omaha Street Percussion, that reminded me of Stomp.

After bobbing my head to the beat, we bought some South Dakota prints from a local vendor and grabbed some grub. Then it was time for beer.

Cracking a cold one, we caught up with people we knew and got ready for the Jo Dee Messina concert.

Taylor was mesmerized by nostalgia with songs Bye Bye and Heads Carolina, Tails California, and we basically had to drag her to go catch the fireworks.

It’s Fire I will say that the fireworks over the Missouri River was definitely a memory I won’t forget. The epic show exploded, and the colors reflected off of the water by the Meridian Bridge. Kids were on parents’ shoulders, and thousands of us were in awe of the impressive display. We had a spot on the dock, and it seemed surreal to see how beautiful it was.

Pack Up Parade Let’s just say we didn’t go to bed early. 605’s John Snyder and Taylor stayed up with a bonfire well into the morning. I was smart and fell asleep not too long after our return to The Lodge.

As we got our lives together, we checked out of the Lewis & Clark Resort and headed downtown to the parade.

Worried the drums would give me a migraine, I was thrilled that it was the opposite. We sat on the patio of the Black Orchid and automatically got a high from the energy of the participants (I might have fan-girled over Charlie the Coyote).

A man with an Irish accent had his black poodle on his lap next to us and jokingly said, “We’re going to be on the cover of the Rolling Stone,” as we shot photos of the celebration. All spirits were high, and it was a shame that we had to leave. After one more walk through of the art (and several purchases later), we headed for lunch.

What’s Up, Bro? Starving, we arrived at Bro Brgr Bar downtown. The restaurant that wants to treat everyone with “brotherly love” has made a name for itself for craft burgers, like the Downtown Brgr with chipotle, cream cheese, bacon, American cheese, fried egg, onions, lettuce, pickle, and tomato. Owner Ramiro Nino also does specials, like The Bayou Brgr, which has ingredients like andouille sausage and cajun remoulade sauce with angus beef.

Barely talking from the food coma and our self-induced coma from the night before, we wrapped up and headed home. The trip was short, but sweet.

“My husband really gravitates toward those safe options like your Italian Flatbread, burger, or steak,” she said.

To appeal to him and others like him, River’s Edge serves familiar family recipes like Meatloaf and Shepherd’s Pie. “People tend to be surprised that we have them on the menu, but when they try them, they order them again and again,” said Trimble Wagner.

But she grew up exploring a wide variety of foods with her family.

“Saganaki is something my brother introduced us to when he was living in Chicago for school,” said Trimble Wagner. “Flaming Saganaki is lit at the table and has a ‘wow’ factor.”

The starter is Greek cheese set aflame and served with sliced baguette.

“We try to incorporate some good dishes we’ve experienced from traveling or eating at other restaurants, trying to mimic some of the things we thought would be cool to bring to the area,” said Trimble Wagner.

One of the more popular starters is the Bruschetta.

“The Bruschetta is light and fresh. It has a great sharing quality with finger food. Same with the Charcuterie Board,” she said. “Each couple weeks we’re changing up the meats and cheeses for people to try something different.”

Among the flatbreads on the menu, Trimble Wagner says the Chicken Margherita Flatbread is the crowd favorite.

“There’s a homemade creamy pesto base, fresh tomatoes, grilled chicken, and fresh mozzarellas,” said Trimble Wagner.

But her favorite is the Thai Chicken Flatbread.

“It has spicy peanut sauce and lots of fresh ingredients with a different flavor profile than your traditional all-American menu,” she said. “Other things that are a little different for a small midwest town are Mussels, the Lobster Roll, and the Lobster Mac ‘n’ Cheese. We like playing with flavors that people don’t usually put together.”

Other must tries include seafood dishes.

“We are known for having really good fish. The Mahi Mahi is really popular,” said Trimble Wagner.

The cut of fish is baked and finished with a complementing splash of lemon.

Also on the lighter side are the salad options like the Bruschetta Chicken Salad, Steak Salad, or Waldo Chicken Salad.

“My favorite salad is the Strawberry Pecan Salad. It has gorgonzola, fresh red onions, strawberries, and topped with a lemon poppyseed dressing,” she explained.

Though River’s Edge has many items that branch out from typical Midwestern food norms, they try to keep it local for the taplines.

“We also feature a lot of local and South Dakota brews,” said Trimble Wagner. “We pride ourselves on making sure our tap lineup and bottled beer features a good variety of local brews.”

Yankton’s own Backspace Brewing Co. and Ben’s Brewing Company always have something on tap at the restaurant. The rest are rotating kegs from a variety of breweries in the Midwest.

The restaurant offers both onsite and offsite catering as well as a large party room that can be rented out for events.

“Yes, the restaurant is our backbone, but the events allow us to get creative and do things that are a little bit different,” said Trimble Wagner.

written by Dawn Geertsema + photos by Alana & John Snyder “Backspace Brewing Co. started as an idea between a couple of us that were home brewers,” said coowner Chris Allington. “I had been home brewing for some time, and Tyler Schindler had dabbled in it a little bit and decided he’d wanted to start doing an all-grain brewery, which is where you are milling the grain like you do in a professional brewery.”

He began brewing with his co-owner in Schindler’s garage.

“After a couple years of that, we decided we wanted to give this a shot as a business,” said Allington. “Over the next year to 18 months or so we sat down and looked into what you needed to do to start a brewery, and we wrote a business plan.”

On January 8, 2021, Backspace Brewing opened on Walnut Street in Yankton.

Craft Creativity “We approach brewing with a sense of creativity and try to use a lot of culinary flavors,” said Allington. “We do a lot of things with fruit, herbs, and spices.”

They’ve had all kinds of flavors from Pumpkin Pie Conundrum made with pumpkin, Madagascar vanilla, and pumpkin pie spices to In the Cloud which is a rotating cream ale series of beers based on sweet recipes like apple pie and strawberries and cream.

“We approach things by trying to model a beer after a flavor versus just coming up with a beer first and then going in that direction,” said Allington.

Other examples are the Maple Pecan Blonde Ale, made with maple syrup and roasted pecans, and Bricklayer Brown Ale—an English brown that’s dry with a hint of coffee and caramel.

“We have a couple mainstays, but we’re always trying to do different things and experiment to come up with new recipes and new flavors,” said Allington.

River’s Edge Wheat is a wheat beer with a crisp, tart tangerine flavor. The other mainstay is the Lancer Lager, which is a pineapple- and floral-noted lager brewed for sports teams at Mount Marty University.

History + Atmosphere “We’re in a building that was a brewery pre prohibition. It was Schwenk-Barth Brewing Co. initially,” he said, noting that it was built in 1902.

Allington says when they were setting up the taproom, they were trying to adhere to the rustic, industrial nature of the building. To do so, they hoped to acquire some materials from SE SD Rough Sawn Lumber out of Lennox.

“We reached out to them, and they had a big black walnut tree that they had just put through their saw mill and came from a farm in South Dakota,” said Allington. “Once we started talking about the dimensions, they thought they’d have enough material to make a bartop out of it.”

The company proposed doing resin work on the wood, and now hops and grain are sprinkled within the stretch lit-up resin filling a divot in the middle of the bartop.

“With it running right down the center like that, we feel it represents the Missouri River for us as we’re right on the river bank,” said Allington.

With the bartop in place, the rustic, industrial space brings conversation and a place for friends.

“It’s a warm, rustic, and industrial space. You get a sense of the history with this building being over 100 years old,” said Allington. “You come in, we have board games.

Yes, we do have a few TVs, but you’re not walking into a sports bar.”

When we met with owner Ramiro Nino at Bro Brgr Bar last year, the Yankton restaurant was just starting out.

Bro Brgr Bar has made it through to meet another year.

“Our staff has been nothing short of amazing. I am fortunate to call them my family, and we hope to make our second year a better one,” said Nino.

To improve further, they did a deep dive into the menu.

“We’ve continuously strived to perfect our menu to cater the likes of our guests and to keep it original and unique,” he explained.

“We’ve experimented and tried many different combinations, and though it is never ending, we’ve put the final touches on our new and improved menu.”

I have three beautiful children. Camila, Benito, and Deysia are my motivation for life and my biggest joys. They make me the happiest father in the world and are my inspiration to be great.

Beer at Ben’s One of my favorite local hangout spots is definitely Ben’s Brewing Company. I love the atmosphere, the brews are great, and the staff is amazing.

One with Nature Growing up, my family and I always spent time at Pierson Ranch Recreation Area because of its relaxing, private location. It’s a great weekend getaway.

Hole in One I love some competition, so mini golf and go-karts are [some of my favorite activities] at Karttrax Family Fun Park. No friendly bets over here.

Fun in the Fall A fun and adventurous place my kids and I enjoy going to is Mazing Acres Pumpkin Patch. It’s a great addition to our community.

The Black Orchid is celebrating its second anniversary since opening in Yankton’s Riverfront building in May of 2020.

“It’s so nice to be able to come to a place that's different from the rest,” said Klund. “People are able to have conversations. It’s quaint.”

“The Sky Bar opens up Thursday nights with rooftop seating overlooking the river with live music. That’s extremely rare. It’s a hidden gem.”

“People will come in specifically for those.

We do a Caramel by the Sea, a Chocolatini, White Peppermint,” explained Klund. “We switch them up for the seasons, but they’re big and have whip cream, chocolate, peanut butter cups, or candy canes hanging off of them.”

The Black Orchid also has plenty of drinks named after customers, like a grapefruit martini called the Paulatini and a gin drink named Dusty Trail.

There’s also a fair few options to satisfy hunger.

“When we started out, everybody had pizza downtown,” said Klund. “It was hard for me to make another pizza. Our Fatbreads are just that—they are on half loaves of French bread, so they are fat.”

A unique favorite for Klund is the Sesame Crusted Ahi Tuna.

“The Ahi Tuna is seared with sesame oil and sesame seeds,” said Klund. “Then it’s chilled, sliced, and served with poki sauce, soy sauce, and sweet and sour sauce with fresh ginger.”

And the menu sees new changes pretty frequently.

“We will do different foods on a whim,” said Klund. “For the last couple months we’ve done different soups to give people variety.”

Now as the seasons change and warmer weather rolls in, soups will make way for different dips.

“If something really takes off and people love it, that’s how it winds up on the menu like our Bagel Dip,” said Klund.

No matter the food, Klund insists that anyone is welcome into the Black Orchid.

“People can come here on a Friday night date night and be dressed up and feel comfortable, and you can come here in your blue jeans and feel just as comfortable,” said Klund. “So I think it kind of works for everybody.”

She also works hard to remember faces and the orders that come with them.

“I try really hard to remember who people are when they come in or what they like to drink.

And that’s a good feeling,” she said.

Starting in June, the outdoor patio will open up.

“The other thing is we actually have a license for sidewalk café, so we are going to put a fence up and a couple tables” Inside and outside, the Black Orchid stands to facilitate conversation amongst guests.

“People are engaged in conversation. It’s like a beautiful thing to see. That’s what we set out to do, and we succeeded.”

“The Lodge is catered for big get togethers, family reunions, weddings, and vacations,” said Grave. “It has an 1,800-square-foot great room and double kitchen, which allows you to prepare meals and cook meals on site. It takes the headaches away from having a family vacation.”

With six bedrooms, two sofa sleepers, and four bathrooms, the Lodge sleeps up to 28 guests in its 4,000 square feet.

“We’re building two 3,000-square-foot cottages. They’ll be set up as smaller versions of the Lodge for family reunions and stuff like that,” said Grave.

The newly-built cottages are scaled down to accommodate groups that only need the space to sleep up to 20 amongst the four bedrooms and three bathrooms. These spaces each have a 1,300-square-foot great room for hanging out and entertaining.

“We’re always changing to give more options to people who are staying. We’re adding on six full hookup campsites, so your whole family can come even if your cousin or uncle has a camper,” said Grave.

“Yankton is a small community that does a good job of catering to the tourists,” said Grave.

The resort is located conveniently beside Lewis & Clark Lake, which offers plenty of fun, seasonal activities.

“The lake is one of the best recreational lakes you could ask for, especially in the area,” explained Grave.

Yankton is also alongside the Missouri River, so the resort has plenty of water-based activities to explore and try out.

“We have 27 miles of bike trails, outdoor pools, playgrounds, volleyball courts, bocce ball courts, basketball courts, picnic shelters, yard games. We have a little bit of everything,” said Grave.

“Yankton Thrive is an organization that was created in July 2021 with the merger of the Yankton Area Chamber of Commerce and Yankton Area Progressive Growth (YAPG),” said business services director Becky Wiswall.

In the area, Yankton Thrive works on economic development, workforce development, tourism, and business services.

Wiswall says she loves to work with members to figure out the best way to help them, meet new people, and plan events.

“BEING A PREVIOUS BUSINESS OWNER FOR OVER 10 YEARS, I FEEL LIKE I CAN RELATE TO MANY SMALL BUSINESSES WITH THEIR SUCCESSES AND OBSTACLES.”

5 QUESTIONS WITH WISWALL HOW DO YOU SPEND YOUR FREE TIME? I enjoy spending time with family and friends, trying new recipes, traveling, enjoying my family’s lake cabin in the summer months, jumping on the golf course in our backyard to play a few holes, and enjoying cold beverages on any patio.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE PLACES IN YANKTON? Our downtown here is quaint and thriving with so many fun shops and restaurants for a town our size. I can’t usually walk out of Boston Shoes to Boots without at least one pair of shoes, and 9th Street Clothing Co. has cute clothes and an amazing selection of BrüMates (my favorite “fancy” koozies). The Blue Pig Pizza at Cheers Pizza Plus is also a personal favorite, as well as chicken wings from Czeckers Sports Bar & Grille. The margaritas at El Tapitio and any of the seltzers from Ben’s Brewing Company are also on my must-have drinks list.

DO YOU HAVE KIDS OR ANIMALS? I have a son named Knox, who is 21 months old—like most boys he’s busy! My first born is a big fur child named Cru—he’s a 4-year-old, 130-pound Bernese Mountain Dog. He doesn’t let me forget he was the first, either.

HOW DID YOU END UP IN YOUR CURRENT POSITION? I ended up somewhat falling into this position. I moved to Yankton in the summer of 2020 and was looking for what my next position would be after owning my own business for some time before that.

A mutual friend of my now boss, Nancy Wenande, and I introduced us, and we had met for coffee months before my position was created.

Once this position was going to be posted, we ran into each other.

DURING THE SUMMER, WHAT ARE SOME MUST-STOP PLACES IN YANKTON? Any of the trails and beaches around the lake are great. Our city Parks & Recreation department organizes and hosts many amazing summer events—Music at the Meridian every Thursday in July and August as well as Kids in the Park on Saturdays in June. You can’t forget about Riverboat Days in August, and our new Huether Family Aquatic Center that opened last summer. Other must-stops are walking across the Meridian Bridge, The Mint for lunch, Tastee Treat Drive-in for dessert, and the Ice House for a cold one.
