A Vacation Destination: Custer Hospitality Hotels & Resort MEET THE CREATIVE:
WINDOWS DOWN. EYES UP.
Charlie Mogen
What Inspired You to Get into this Industry?
I was fortunate to have incredibly gracious bartenders as a patron early on, and their warm welcome and openness in sharing their knowledge of the craft made me want to do the same for others.
What’s your Favorite Downtime Activities?
I love reading, playing music (come see Wivestale Four Winds Fest in late July), and spending time with family and friends. I’m also a regular at my home bar and in my backyard.
What’s A Highlight of Your Career?
This past winter we curated and served a cocktail menu for a regular that highlighted a, uh, very unique spirit. It was a blast seeing the looks of confusion, then delight, as people realized they actually enjoyed a communally reviled product.
What’s your Mocktail of choice?
Mixologist of the Month ADVERTORIAL
The Mile Marker! We make a pineapple shrub (a fruited/sweetened vinegar), and it really pops with a little cinnamon and orange oil.

“If you would have asked me five years ago if I would have a flower farm someday, I probably would have laughed,” said Christy Heckathorn
Today, the flower farmer, florist, wife, and mother is the owner of a picturesque plot just 10 minutes north of Elk Point— Fleurish Flower Farm.
Heckathorn grew up in Sanborn, MN with an entrepreneur father who “wasn’t afraid to experiment with growing unique things.” She would soon develop her own creative lens on life while cultivating a passion for flowers.
While earning a Consumer Affairs degree at South Dakota State University, Heckathorn worked at McCrory Gardens for a few summers in Brookings. Upon graduating, she began working at a flower shop in Elk Point.
When the shop closed, Heckathorn started her own wedding floral business. She named the business Fleurish, after the French word for flower.
Beauty in Bloom
fleurish flower farm
Written by Greta Smith + photos by Alana SnyderChristy Heckathorn
In 2015, Heckathorn and her husband Chad , purchased a property for a seed shed for their seed business, HeckSeeds.
When COVID hit, things slowed down in the Heckathorn world. In her free time, Heckathorn took a class on how to farm flowers.
“Everything just changed after that,” she said. “I really couldn’t get the idea of starting some type of flower farm out of my head.”
Though only having been to one other flower farm, Heckathorn says she completely immersed herself into the world of flowers and everything she needed to know in order to grow them.
“When I started planning the flower farm, I knew I was undertaking something big,” said Heckathorn.
“The people who come here really appreciate the beauty of what it takes to grow flowers, and also that they get to come and pick their own flowers. It gives me a lot of joy to just see people being able to do that.”

One year later, the farm opened for You-Pick nights with live music, food trucks, and local vendors like Rainy Day Coffee Co. On You-Pick nights, guests are welcomed to cut their own bouquets, snack on a sweet treat, and browse the historic property.
Preparation for the farm is no small task. Heckathorn starts all the flowers from seed in the spring and strategically designs the layout of the flowerbeds.
“During the flower farm season it’s very involved, and I work a lot of 16 hour days,” said Heckathorn.
When the frost comes, she says she enjoys spending time with her family and being a mom–while planning for the next year, booking weddings and ordering seeds.
“There’s always something going on,” she said.
Did You Know?
The vines growing on the Kalstad summer kitchen are 100 years old.
Owning the flower farm has been a key asset to Heckathorn’s wedding floral business.
“I love doing weddings and getting to use my own flowers because it makes it very specialized to that bride,” she said.
Being able to pair different flower varieties and shapes and colors is life-giving to Heckathorn, and she enjoys passing that intentionality on to her clients.
“I’ve grown certain flowers for a bride that’s getting married, knowing I’ll use them exclusively in her wedding,” she revealed.
Starting this summer, Heckathorn plans to open the farm up to booking private events such as bridal showers, bachelorette parties, or company team building events. The events can be customized with You-Pick options and food.
Fleurish has a grass runway for airplanes that often fly in for You-Pick events.

After opening night, the farm will be open every Wednesday and Sunday night from 5 p.m. to dusk until October.
For brides to be, Fleurish offers a Brides & Blooms experience for brides who want to pick their own flowers. They're welcome to bring their family or bridesmaids.
As Heckathorn continues to expand Fleurish’s services, she intends to honor the property’s roots. The last owner of the land, Thelma Kalstad , was a South Dakota native and farmer. A small cabin and Kalstad’s summer kitchen–used for cooking and canning–still stand on the property.
Heckathorn says that keeping Kalstead’s legacy alive is important to her, and a sketch of the summer kitchen lives on in the Fleurish logo.
“It’s my way of paying tribute to the farm and its roots and who lived here,” said Heckathorn. “Preserving that part of history is important to me.” FOR MORE INFORMATION, VISIT FLEURISHFLOWER FARM.ORG +
Southeast South Dakota
Rebrand
After maintaining the same identity and tactics for over 25 years, Southeast South Dakota Tourism Association found it was time for a refresh.
“It was essential to refresh the branding and realign the organization’s methods and strategies,” said Kasi Haberman, the executive director of the organization stationed in Yankton.
Since 1987, Southeast South Dakota Tourism Association has promoted the state's southeast region to drive visitation to their member’s businesses.
The awaited rebrand not only included a change in cosmetic appearance, but aimed to set new goals for members and visitors.
“For our members, we aimed to strengthen their confidence in the organization, attract new members, and accurately represent our region,” explained Haberman. “For our visitors, we wanted to provide relevant and timely information, become a trustworthy guide, be fun and welcoming, and ultimately become a brand that potential and past visitors want to see content from.”
written by Gabby Sudenga + photos by Alana Snyder & John SnyderHaberman understood the daunting task and recognized she couldn’t tackle it alone. As a result, she added graphic designer Amy Bailey to the team.
“Together we began to brainstorm ideas and collected input from industry leaders, the State Department of Tourism, and the organization’s board to make and execute a plan,'' reminisced Bailey.
Bailey and Haberman began with a blank slate and created a logo and brand that they say embodies elements of their home state.
The new logo depicts a simplistic outline of the state with an emphasis on the southeast to convey a sense of place, according to Bailey. It’s paired with the tagline, “Find Yourself Here.”
“The tagline holds a literal meaning. When you visit, you not only find yourself visiting this region, but you find yourself,” explained Bailey.
“The best part of tourism is being able to show off the exciting things that make where you call home great.”Graphic Designer Amy Bailey
Kasi Haberman
To complement the new brand, multiple marketing efforts received an upgrade, including a new website, travel guides, maps, stickers, and an overall a new voice.
“The sky was the limit when we first started, but we began by asking ‘What do we want to do here?’ and 'How can we best represent and promote our region,'” said Bailey. “It was a fun opportunity to rebuild something from the ground up and take it into a new direction.”
Haberman says that she and Bailey were no strangers to this undertaking. Haberman was previously the tourism director for Visit Yankton where Bailey served as a graphic designer.
“Everything that we are creating with Southeast South Dakota we have already done with Visit Yankton, so we were prepared to start from scratch,” explained Haberman.
Over the course of two months, Haberman, Bailey, and their small team began to execute their rebrand throughout various parts of their organization.
Bailey admits that the toughest part of the revamp was finding the time to implement everything they dreamed of.
“We are a membership organization, so we’re like a chamber of commerce. The revenue that we generate within the organization is 100% reinvested back into promoting our members’ businesses.”
Kasi Haberman
“There are only so many hours in a day,” Bailey said with a chuckle. “We have a million exciting things we want to do with our organization, and our main challenge has been finding the time to get it all done.”
The new direction of the Southeast South Dakota Tourism Association has received positive feedback from the board of directors, members, the Department of Tourism, and visitors.
Haberman continued on to express her excitement about the feedback and support from South Dakota’s Secretary of Tourism, Jim Hagen.
“His statement said, ‘The branding has breathed new life into the association’s work and the tourism offerings in this region of the state,’” explained Haberman
Local businesses are also benefiting from the increased visibility and promotion of the area, as more tourists are expected to visit and explore the region's offerings.
“We hope current and potential members see that the organization can make a positive impact on the success of their small business,” explained Haberman.
Haberman and her team have implemented innovative and new marketing opportunities for their members, setting a positive tone for the growth of tourism throughout the region.
For Bailey, it’s been rewarding to see their efforts of the rebrand are going to give their dedicated members more attention, business, and revenue.
“Overall, it will overall bring more people to our region, strengthening our local economy,” said Bailey.
Haberman added, “I’m thrilled to continue to expand our membership and play a crucial role in promoting tourism in Southeast South Dakota, while being an essential collaborator for our members.” FOR MORE INFORMATION, VISIT
605 Tries
On the stormiest weekend of this spring, 605’s John Snyder, Gabby Sudenga, and I packed up our Sprinter Van and drove out to the Black Hills to meet Carrie Gerlach—a South Dakota fanatic, travel addict, and owner of Black Hills Adventure Tours
After working in the tourism and sales industries for years, Gerlach was inspired to start her own tour company. She took out a bank loan, bought the equipment, and started giving tours in 2005.
A few years into the venture, Gerlach pumped the brakes on the tours and got a second job in health care, intending to become a travel nurse.
Soon, Gerlach began to notice how the tourism and health care industries went hand in hand.
“You’re taking care of people, you’re planning things for people,” she said. “It’s kind of funny how that works.”
written by Greta Smith + photos by John SnyderGerlach also leads tours to Costa Rica, Utah, Arizona, California, and Georgia.
Realizing that her true passion was the people, Gerlach shifted her focus back to the tours and began to find staff members organically along the way. Soon she gained the support she needed to go full time with the business.
“I don’t know how I got so lucky,” she mused. “I can’t say enough good things about my staff. They’re awesome.”
On each sightseeing and adventure tour, Gerlach and her guides talk with the guests to determine what kind of adventure they will have together.
“It’s about a 10 minute conversation,” she says, explaining her staff’s knack for customizing a tour based on what her clients value most.
Whether it’s wildlife, outdoor activities, sightseeing, museums, spooky locations, or even spontaneously getting married, Gerlach says she will stop at nothing to give her guests a good experience.
“I just love the guests,” she said. “I love the guests so much.”

When the team picked us up from our hotel in Rapid City on Friday morning, they greeted us warmly in the hotel lobby, asking us about ourselves and our interests. Even though it was forecasted to rain the entire day (and it did), it was difficult to be worried because we knew the team had a plan.
Gerlach took us biking on the Mickelson Trail and drove us along Needle’s Highway in Custer State Park .
We broke out the kayaks on Sylvan Lake and sent a very brave Gabby out on the water with one of the guides. Though she’d never been kayaking before, the team agreed she was a natural.
We stopped for a group picture before Gerlach drove us along Palmer Creek Road , telling us jokes and historical facts as she went.

For lunch, we stopped at Miner Brewing Company in Hill City. Gabby and I promptly ordered the hot chocolate, along with the Pesto Chicken Sandwich and the Grilled Cheese. John ordered the Miner Lavender Cider and the Porchetta Sandwich
The rain persisted, but we were surrounded by friendly conversation as Gerlach told us about her secret talent.
“I can be anywhere in the Black Hills and I can tell you down to the minute how long it will take us to get from point A to point B,” she said.
As we piled in the car, I asked her how far we were from our next destination, Mount Rushmore. “Twenty minutes,” she said casually.
I watched the clock. She was right.
Carrie Gerlach
“There’s something about the Hills that I just don’t ever want to leave.”
The rain eased up just enough to let us take a spontaneous hike by the Doane Robinson Tunnel—one of three tunnels that frames the national monument.
The team was eager to explore, dance, share their experiences, crack jokes, and take selfies with us.
“This group is in for a good time no matter what the weather throws at you,” reflected John.
With a spirited staff and the company’s many partnerships, we knew the possibilities were endless.
“We work very closely with our partners to make sure that our guests are safe and that we are being sustainable so that we can be doing tours well into the future,” said Gerlach.
Though our tour may have looked different because of the weather, Gerlach and her guides deftly exhibited their ability to make the best of every experience.
“At the end of the day, we’re hugging each other. We’re best friends,” she said. “For me, that makes everything totally worth it.”

KARA HARMS
“ Wild Water West Waterpark looks to provide family fun during the summer,” said office manager and marketing coordinator Kara Harms. “We provide wholesome, clean, family entertainment for the southeast South Dakota region.”
Since 1990, the waterpark has become a highly sought-after destination for the young and young at heart.
“We look forward to providing lasting memories for those visiting for the first time and our season pass holders,” said Harms.
The family-friendly aquatic playground features exhilarating waterslides, floating obstacle courses, tasty treats, and more.
“We offer cabanas on the side in front of our wave pool, which is perfect for families,
smaller groups, or a central meet-up with friends and family,” said Harms.
Along with aquatic attractions, Wild Water West is adding a campsite, Flamingo Falls Campground, which will feature over 145 spots, including RV and tent sites.
“It’ll have many exciting things to do, such as an entertainment space, a convenience store, laundry, and video lottery,” shared Harms.
The crew is accepting reservations for the upcoming summer season and “can’t wait” to show off the new addition.

START YOUR DAY OFF RIGHT
I love Scooter’s Coffee! I always get an Iced White Mocha and a Bacon Ciabatta Sandwich. It's the best way to start my day.
SURF SIDE SNACKS
Working out at Wild Water West can be hard when you start to smell the concession’s food. My go-tos are the Giant Soft Pretzel (with Cheese), Walking Taco, and Chicken Strips.
ESCAPE THE CHALLENGE
My friends and I enjoy going to escape rooms around town, as they can be challenging, yet very fun. The most recent one we did was called Recon: The Final Hour—South Dakota’s Scariest Escape Room at Conquer Escape Rooms
5 FUN FACTS
1. I love music and can’t go a day without it. My current favorite songs are Tuesday’s Gone by Lynyrd Skynyrd and Heaven by Niall Horan.
2. I’m a board and card game fanatic, whether it’s Clue, The Game of Life, or Scattergories—I’m into all of them.
3. I started at Wild Water West during high school as a hostess and then became the office manager after college. It’s been fun meeting new people and making memories along the way.
4. I added a puppy to my family last August named Goose. Despite the confusion, he’s named after the animal, not after the character in Top Gun.
5. I learned American Sign Language (ASL) in high school and I’m always working to improve. My goal is to take more classes to expand my knowledge in the area.
CINEMATIC CLASSICS
I’ve always loved going to the movies, so it’s really exciting when The State Theatre plays older movies and I can see them on the big screen. This last summer I experienced the classic Star Wars: A New Hope in theaters.
FRIENDLY COMPETITION
On cooler summer days, I recommend our GoKarts or Mini Golf course. They’re perfect for those who love competition, like me!
SIPS & STREAMS
I find it difficult to stay away from work on my days off. I enjoy floating down the Lazy River after stopping by the Swim-Up Bar on a hot summer day.
“Along with making memories, we offer job opportunities for young people who are looking to develop their professional skills and have an exciting summer job.”

Along the busy street of Philips Avenue in downtown Sioux Falls is an outdoor bandshell with a mission of building community through music.
The Levitt at the Falls hosts 50 musical acts throughout the months of June to September.
“The Levitt provides a space for anyone with any background to come together and enjoy live music at no cost,” said operations manager Jake Paron
Paron began his journey with the non-profit organization as an intern in 2021, learning the ropes and everything it takes to present free, outdoor concerts. Following that year, he returned as an operations assistant, investing more time into his role, and gradually transitioned into his current position.
“I work on a wide range of responsibilities such as day-today operations, working with our outside vendors, operating the video board, booking potential artists, and taking care of the contracting side of things,” said Paron. “Everything makes every day at work new and exciting.”
Paron is no stranger to the world of music. At the age of 14, Paron and his friend started freestyling rap songs.
“It quickly evolved into writing lyrics and creating our own songs,” Paron reminisced. “Over the years I would write more and more, and I eventually start recording them.”
Currently, Paron has released two albums under the name Left2Jake Self Aware and Traversing Tribulations are available on all music streaming platforms.

© 2018 National Pork Board, Des Moines, Iowa USA. This message funded by America’s Pork Producers and the Pork Checkoff. My favorite thing about working with the Levitt is...
the people. I get to connect with many people in this line of work. I have a great boss and coworkers, as well as the opportunity to meet so many amazing creatives and artists from around the nation and world. A bonus would be connecting with community members in our great partnerships and awesome donors.
My favorite performance at the Levitt was...
The Lemon Bucket Orkestra . They performed with us in 2022, and their overall performance surprised me. The band is based in Canada, but their music is Ukrainian with a mix of genres. Their live performance was crazy, and they were such a great group of musicians with a lot of positive energy.
I support the Levitt's mission by...
working toward our goal of building community through music. Personally, I believe in our mission and what we're trying to accomplish. I’m a goal-oriented person, which is part of the reason I’ve enjoyed working at the Levitt.
JAKE PARON
,,I’m glad that I get to be a part of creating this environment for our community.”
The best part of my job is...
getting to listen to music. When people ask what I do, I always tell them, ‘I get paid to listen to music.’ I have the chance to listen to up to 100 different live performances during our concert season and check out countless musicians who show interest in performing during our planning season.
The performance I’m looking forward to seeing the most this season is...
hip-hop/rap artist Dee-1. I’m somewhat familiar with his work, but I also believe he has a genuine interest in our mission as well. He’s very talented, and I’m hoping that a wide variety of people will come to the lawn and check him out.
I'd describe my style of music as...
hip-hop/rap. Rap is such a wide genre nowadays that encompasses so many sounds, but my style has always had lyrics and personal storytelling as my focus.
JAKE PARON
,,My songwriting process never stops. I write exponentially more lyrics than I ever wind up recording or releasing.”
YOUR WORLD IN OUR HANDS

They are a bundle of energy, smiles and snuggles one minute and causing mischief the next. But you wouldn’t have it any other way. To help keep your little ones going at top speed, partner with a pediatrician from Sanford Health. Whether it’s a well-child check-up, a cold or a complex medical issue, we’re here for all your child’s health needs.
I started creating my own music because...
of my best friend. When we first became friends in seventh grade, it didn’t take long to discover that we both enjoyed listening to rap music. We were on the track team, so every day we would listen to music at practice, on the bus, and while we ran.
My love for music came from...
becoming an outlet to express myself. I didn’t come from a musical family, but I’ve always been one to express my own opinions and feelings.
My advice to aspiring musicians is...
the same thing I tell myself, as I’m aspiring to keep getting better every day. Creativity is important, and humans are meant to create. You don’t have to be the best, and you don’t have to do what anyone else is doing. Express yourself in that creativity, keep learning, adapting, evolving—and most importantly—keep having fun.
My favorite local goto restaurant is...
I’m still trying to find some favorites. I’m not originally from Sioux Falls, so I keep finding new restaurants all of the time. I will say Bread & Circus Sandwich Kitchen is always a great choice since it’s right across from the Levitt.

Someone local I admire is...
Nancy Halverson, the executive director of Levitt at the Falls. She’s been an incredible mentor and boss and has helped me jump-start my career in the real world. Not being from the city and not having a lot of connections in the community, I wasn’t sure what my plans were after graduation. She does a great job of staying positive, leading others, listening, and keeping the mission of the Levitt relevant in our community. belle joli’ winery sparkling house
In the heart of Sturgis lies family-owned winery Belle Joli Winery
Sparkling House.
Co-owner and winemaker Matthew Jackson discovered his passion for winemaking at an early age. After growing up with a vineyard background, he attended California State University, Fresno to pursue the Enology Program and perfect his craft.
Here he met his wife, co-owner, and certified sommelier, CMS, Choi, and upon the completion of their respective studies, the couple boldly chose to relocate to South Dakota to fulfill their family’s passion for the winemaking process.
In 2000, Matthew planted his first vines in Belle Fourche and the rest became history.
The winery stretches across the Black Hills into Deadwood and Sturgis.
The Sturgis vineyard covers five acres, and the Belle Fourche vineyard covers 25 acres. Both produce 15 elegant wines, including sparkling, white, red, and port [dessert] styles.
“What is really unique at Belle Joli’ is that we cover a wide range of styles of wine from dry to sweet to port styles,” said Matthew.
Choi continued, “We could describe our winery as ‘soil to sip’. We have a vineyard where guests can check out how the vine grows, see the production, and taste the final product through our daily tours.

As guests drink in the beauty of the Black Hills, they can order consciously crafted small plates that complement their wine from Belle Joli’s Bistro Menu
“Our menu is curated to be paired with our wines so they fit well together,” said Choi. “We don’t serve anything that is too overpowering or plain.”
The menu offers a Charcuterie Board , Classic Cheese Board , Tomato and Basil Flatbread , Salmon and Dill Flatbread , Hummus with Naan Bread , and an Olive Bowl
The Charcuterie Board is comprised of thin slices of salami, prosciutto, nuts, fresh fruit, crackers, and three kinds of fresh cheese.
She adds that the Classic Cheese Board is perfect for guests who are coming in for a glass of wine after a heavy lunch or early dinner.
“Who doesn’t like cheese?” she said with a laugh.
“We came up with the name Belle Joli’ by combining two French terms, representing the beauty of the Black Hills.” Choi

Did You Know?
Belle Joli’ has a wine-tasting room located in Deadwood.
The flatbreads have become a fan favorite, especially the Tomato and Basil, says Choi. The thin, crispy crust is topped with an olive oil mix, melted mozzarella, and ripe tomatoes, coated with a sprinkle of basil, and parmesan cheese, tying the savory flavors together.
“If you’re simply here for a Sangria, then you might want to go with a flatbread,” said Choi. “Some people enjoy the sparkling wine and want to pair it with salty meat and cheese.”
Belle Joli’ specializes in sparkling wine made using the traditional Champagne method. In 2019, the couple’s Brut Rosé Sparkling Wine won a gold medal in the San Francisco International Wine Competition
Brut Rosé is complemented with notes of red and black fruits rounded out with grapefruit and citrus. It pairs well with tuna steak, fresh oysters, or lemon parsley mussels and clams.
Among the variety of wines available at the winery are American Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Harvest Rosé, a house favorite.

Harvest Rosé is a Frontenac, riesling blend featuring notes of jammy strawberry, rose petals, and florals. It pairs well with exotic cuisine, seafood, and aged gouda cheese.
With limited quantities of artisan wine produced and sold each year, Matthew encourages their existing customers and future customers to join Belle Joli’s Wine Club Membership
“It’s free to sign up and we ship to about 30 states throughout America,” he explained. “We’re able to ship it to your front door, all you have to do is provide your information and we process your selections of how many bottles you want per shipment.”
The company offers customers the chance to choose from two to 12 bottles of handcrafted wine, as well as be one of the first to try new wines.
“They don’t want to miss that opportunity, so we ensure that our new wine is included, or if there’s a limited edition wine for the holidays, they receive it first,” Choi added.
Matthew Jackson“We hope to build a tank facility in Sturgis, that will also go along with the tours and we would love to show more of the production/ vineyard experience.”

“Being in South Dakota, the wine industry is still young and in an early stage of growth,” said Choi. “We just want people to come and try our product and have our local South Dakotans know about us.”

HUNTERS POINTE SHOOTING COMPLEX
Nestled in the lush prairie and woods of the state is Hunters Pointe Shooting Complex. The outdoor arena in Humboldt serves as a haven for beginners and enthusiasts in outdoor shooting, offering a wide array of ranges and facilities to cater to various skill levels and disciplines.
After retiring from the active army in 2008, owner and manager Chris Chamness was on the lookout for his next adventure. Upon his retirement, Chamness met Tony Bour. The two shared a
Written by Gabby Sudenga + photos by John Snyderpassion for shooting and wanted to build a place for locals who share similar interests.
“The club was opened up to South Dakota shooters who have a tradition for shooting,” said Chamness.
Hunters Pointe prides itself on providing a comprehensive shooting experience. The facility boasts a diverse range of shooting ranges tailored to meet the needs of different disciplines, including handguns and rifles.
Chris Chamness
The complex offers two clay courses and four target courses. Chamness says each course is created to ensure both safety and optimal shooting conditions.
The exhilarating clay courses range from automatic trap machines that launch targets at varying angles and speeds. Newcomers shouldn’t fret, as Chamness is there to guide, help, and improve their techniques.
The West Clay Course is a time-proven wings course with 14 stations and 28 fully automated target throwers, providing various types of hunting simulations.
“We call it our ‘friendly course’ and it never changes,” explained Chamness. “Shooters can come out at a skill level of zero and work to advance their basic skills and achieve a better score.”
The East Clay Course offers a more competitive option. With alternating targets, shooters are presented a challenge with standard rolling, curling, diving, and ducking shooting scenarios.
“Those targets change every two weeks, and it also acts as our tournament course in the summer,” said Chamness.
“We have tremendous support from the people of South Dakota, and I like to think that’s because we take the time to listen to their goals.”

ADVICE FROM CHAMNESS
Be safe, have a positive attitude, come in friendly, have courage, and then set your goals or what you want to achieve based on your background.
This year the shooting complex is hosting the Scheels Midwest Classic and the South Dakota State Shoot
“The tournaments are open to the public, so anyone can shoot and get an inside look at competitive shooting on the clay side,” explained Chamness.
Rifle enthusiasts can take advantage of the Rifle and Pistol Range. The range houses 19 concrete stabilized benches, with each bench addressing targets at 100, 200, 300, 400, and 600 yards.
The adjustable target distances allow sportsmen to challenge their accuracy and precision. Chamness adds that the reactive steel
targets provide instant gratification upon the shot's arrival.
The Five Stand and Flurry course simulates a 100-rooster flush at the border of a cornfield. Whether it's a team or individual effort, the time between targets is adaptable to fit the marksmen's desire and skill level.
The Wobble Trap, Trap, and Skeet courses are available to educate younger shooters on flushing and crossing targets. The Wobble Trap involves an oscillating machine from left to right and up and down that can be thrown on command for an individual or as a two-man flurry.
HONORING VETERANS
Hunters Pointe Shooting Complex hosts the South Dakota Salutes shoot yearly, honoring those who fought for the United States.
For those looking for a true hunting experience, Chamness and his team offer a Guided Pheasant Hunt. Located 25 minutes from Sioux Falls Regional Airport, the afternoon event introduces camaraderie and team bonding, which Chamness states epitomizes pheasant hunting.
“We’re a preserve, so birds are always available, our dogs will point, they’ll flush and retrieve,” said Chamness. “It’s an afternoon full of South Dakota tradition.”
Whether customers need ammunition or are looking to rent a firearm, the ProShop has what they need. The one-stop shop carries high-performance target and hunting loads, shooting accessories, cleaning kits, and more.
Chamness says Hunters Pointe isn’t just a place for shooting; it’s also a vibrant community for like-minded individuals. The facility regularly hosts events, competitions, and social gatherings, bringing together shooting enthusiasts from all walks of life.
“We get people from everywhere throughout the state and regionally as well,” shared Chamness. “When visitors are in South Dakota, we can provide a different experience and it’s common for people to bring their family, friends, guests, or visitors from another country.”
Hunters Pointe Shooting
For events, The Pavilion provides a rustic and informal setting for special or private events. Comfortably seating 160 people, the in-house charcoal grill, kitchenette, refrigerator, freezers, and tables provide the perfect space to enjoy an evening outdoors.
“We’ve hosted everything from bachelor parties, weddings, church youth groups, and other church outings,” said Chamness.
The Pro-Shop is also equipped to hold small gatherings of 50 to 60 guests.
“Catering is allowed, but I’m definitely not a part of the catering business,” Chamness said with a chuckle.
Hunters Pointe stands as a premiere destination for shooting enthusiasts, whether customers are looking to improve their skills or experience the thrill of the sport.
“We treat the people the way I would like to be treated, and we all have something in common when people come through our gate,” said Chamness. “We’re all South Dakota sportsmen.”

JOE SALVATI JOE SALVATI
Written by Gabby Sudenga + Photos by Cailyn Patterson“The Outdoor Campus is the educational side of South Dakota Game, Fish, and Parks,” said school program coordinator Joe Salvati. “We teach people of all ages about outdoor skills and conservation.”
Salvati began his journey as an intern with the Outdoor Campus in 2019 before accepting his current position last October.
“It’s my job to work with schools to schedule and facilitate programming both at the Outdoor Campus, as well as bringing our programs into schools,” explained Salvati.
Visitors can partake in complimentary classes providing a hands-on experience in hunting, fishing, outdoor skills, and conservation skills.
Other courses taught include Outdoor Skills, BB Gun Basics, Fishing 101, Campfire Cooking, Women’s Handgun Safety, Family Intro to Archery, and more.
“We believe that everyone should have access to learning about the outdoors and want to provide the people of South Dakota with an educational resource about our natural resources,” explained Salvati.
Salvati shares more about his love for his career, the outdoors, and his home state.
What's your favorite part of your job?
I get to be outside nearly every day and teach young people about all of the things I love to do.
Which class do you recommend visitors experience?
I recommend coming for our fishing classes. We are very fortunate to have a pond where the fish typically bite, and we have a ton of fun.
What's something you want readers to know about the Outdoor Campus?
One of the best things about the Outdoor Campus is that every class we host is completely free, as we’re funded through the sale of hunting and fishing licenses.
What's something people don’t know about you?
I used to be afraid of public speaking before I started my internship with the Outdoor Campus.
What's your favorite thing about South Dakota?
The hunting is fantastic here, and there are plenty of public land opportunities.
